Book Description
Experience firsthand what makes online information work and why
Standards for Online Communication gives you guidelines for how to place information online within your company. It provides both a design and development process and a set of guidelines for the Internet, intranets, and help systems for designers and authors who need to create effective electronic information.
Drawing on their design and consulting experience, authors JoAnn Hackos and Dawn Stevens demonstrate how to judge what will work for your users, how to translate users' needs into a set of clear specifications, and how to implement these specifications. Using examples of good design, they provide expert advice and guidance on:
* Giving customers and employees the online information they need to do their jobs
* How to organize online information so your users can easily navigate through it
* Dealing with the special design requirements of the Web, intranets, and online help systems
* What graphics users really need and where sound and video fit in
* The issues involved with accessibility and navigation-multimedia, maps, indexes, hypertext, and more
On the accompanying CD, you'll find a winhelp file of the book designed according to the principles taught in the book. Whether you are a webmaster, user-interface designer, content creator, or technical writer, with Standards for Online Communication you'll experience firsthand what makes online information work and why.

Customer Reviews:
An eye-opening book that changed my approach for the better.......2001-07-03
The approach outlined in this book has completely changed the way I tackle developing on-line documents. I have extensive experience in a technique called Information Mapping that is an analysis and document design methodology for paper documents. In many ways the authors' methods are similar to Information Mapping - at least at a macro level. After reading this book I've gained an appreciation for the vast differences between paper and on-line documentation. My "paper-based" thinking before this book resulted in a waste of the underlying capabilities of an on-line document. The authors show how to use technology to vastly improve your reader's efficiency and overall experience when seeking and reading the information you create. If you are used to writing for paper-based publications, or have deveopled on-line pages using nothing but intuition and judegement, this book will completely change your way of thinking.
A must for online Help authors.......2001-05-23
This is an excellent book for helping technical authors accustomed to writing printed documentation in understanding how and why the structure should be different for online readers. Too often authors simply move the information online without any clear understanding of the context in which the reader is using it. I recommend this book to anyone developing software Help files or planning single sourcing documentation.
The Tech Writer's Bible.......2000-08-11
If you are serious about becoming a successful technical writer, I highly recommend purchasing this book.
Of all the books I have purchased, I refer to this one the most often. The CD is great because it has the entire text of the book categorized for easy access right from your computer!
Many technical writing books are outdated and were written BI (before the internet). This book focuses on technical writing using newer technology such as the Internet, WWW, and corporate intranets.
I can't count the number of times this book has come in handy. It is a great reference that you should keep close at hand. Great job Joann!
This one's a keeper........2000-06-30
Recently, I worked on an online help project and found various parts of the online communication process mystifying, which our online help writers take for granted. Examples that come to mind are:
- Standard length of each help file
- The need for popups
- Using the imperative form as opposed to gerunds
These are some of the things I was looking to have explained to me when I bought the book. The book turned out to be perfect for this. Not only does it cover the mechanics, reasons, and standards of online communication, it also contains many nuggets of wisdom regarding the various methods of writing that we apply as technical writers. It's helps me decide when weighing different ways of presenting the same information. So even if you are an experienced online help writer there is no doubt that this book would enlighten your approach to the everyday tasks of creating online/context-sensitive help.
Also, the book comes with a CD that has all the information in the book in a help file that is indexed and can be searched. This is excellent for quick reference.
Trust me, this book is a keeper if you create any kind of online help.
A "Must Have" for Technical Writers.......1999-11-23
I have a shelf full of books on technical writing. Ever on the lookout for something new or better, I picked this up. As usual, Joann delivers only the best.

Book Description
The potential of the MP3 format is incredible. Using digital music, artists can distribute their music without being at the mercy of the traditional record label. It levels the playing field, giving independent musicians the ability to compete with the "big guys." This book explains how.
With the information in this book, bands will find out how to promote their music by releasing tracks on the net. They will learn clever ways to communicate with fans via the Internet, how to set up a Web site and what features the site should offer, and how to add art and lyrics to MP3 files-thereby making these files a more effective marketing tool.
The book covers everything musicians need to know about the MP3 format, from ripping better MP3 files to editing these files. Readers will learn how to shift music from one media to another with ease, and even how to find lyrics and take music lessons on the Internet.

Lovpro21.......2003-03-26
The sexy solo pop singer Lovpro21 new dance single
(MAKE IT BOUNCE) expresses sexual content and revitting beats that has the ladies bouncing there rumps in every club nationwide.
Lovpro21 follow up single (FEEL SO GOOD)up tempo beat with a harmony sexually charged chorus expresses how he appreciate the sexual and creative ways a woman makes him feel good.
This hit single is sure crowd pleasure.
This disc catches alot of listeners attention because the music is very different to what we are use to hearing today. This disc tremendously stands out from all the rest.
i recently read two books on promoting MP3s -- conclusion.......2002-03-31
i recently read two books on promoting MP3s and after some consideration, I think this was the lesser of the two, mainly because of the high cost. You basically pay a lot of money for a glossy cover and some nice pictures. You get the same information, and some better examples, in BUZZ YOUR MP3, an electronic book I discovered here at Amazon. I'm not saying this is a bad book -- it is very well written and the tips are fine -- but why pay so much for this book when you can get something else that is just as good in every way for a lot, lot less? Both books are about using MP3s to further your career. Both are well written. But this one just costs too much. Sorry.
A terrific, "user friendly" guide for serious musicians........2000-08-04
John Hedtke and Sandy Bradley's MP3 For Musicians is packed with details on how a musician might present music on the web, from communicating with fans and deciding how to feature one's music to locating additional resources on the web and understanding and using basic MP3 resources. Highly recommended: the specific information tailored to musicians is unparalleled.
Priceless.......2000-05-19
This book is fantastic! Everything you need to know about MP3s, music promotion and doing it the right way. I love it!

Not.......2002-12-16
This book contains some useful information, but has several serious flaws. The useful information in the book can also be found in several other books and online sources, including the online excerpts from the book. The marketing hype for this book qualifies as false advertising, in my opinion. For example, "All you need to know to plan an intelligent Web services strategy", "Detailed guidance for choosing the right vendor", and "Up-to-the-minute comparisons of Microsoft's .NET and Sun's J2EE".
The book purports to offer a non-technical explanation of topics which are inherently technical. It contains a few simplifications of technical matters which are misleading in important ways. For example:
"The use of 'objects' is a fundamental concept in Web services, because it enables the assembly of large, compound applications faster than by today's monolithic methods. And, because programmers do not need to constantly recreate objects from scratch (they just plug in the appropriate object and away we go)..." (pg. 24)
Anyone who knows much about software engineering will know that this is very misleading. Code re-use is facilitated by object-oriented methods, but reuse is possible with non-object oriented methods, and is by no means guaranteed to be successful with object-oriented methods (...and away we go).
The book defines a Web service as an application or application component which makes use of XML, UDDI, WSDL, and SOAP. UDDI is "a 'registry standard' that allows applications to be listed and located". UDDI would allow applications to find services or components on the web in an automated fashion. Support for and use of UDDI is currently very limited. The author suggests that the current limited use of UDDI is a major drawback for web services in general. This too is misleading: there are many valuable web services which have been and will be implemented without using UDDI. For most current applications, UDDI would be of little value, because the task would remain for an analyst or programmer to determine whether and how the available services might be used.
The most serious flaw in this book is the editorial disaster which is Chapter 9, "Should We Adopt .NET, or J2EE?".
The 'objective comparison' of these 2 competing platforms for web services begins with excerpts from a white paper by the Middleware Company, which specializes in Java server-side application development. The author describes the paper as "fairly objective", an assessment with which I firmly disagree. Microsoft apparently sent a memo to the author, stating a number of disagreements with the Middleware paper. The author, Mr. Clabby, pastes excerpts from the Microsoft memo, mixed in with repetitions of the previously included material from the Middleware paper, in a confusing jumble. In my opinion, the Microsoft response incorporates some good points. Mr. Clabby should have taken the time to rewrite (and then proof-read) Chapter 9.
In the end, the book does not deliver "specific recommendations", but states (correctly, in my opinion) that what any enterprise should do about web services depends very much on the specific circumstances of that enterprise. These circumstances will include the particulars of the enterprise's business, and the readiness of the enterprise's technical staff to deal with web services. One recommendation I would make, and which this book implies but does not state explicitly is that for any enterprise, the time to start learning about web services is probably now. This book can contribute to that process, but parts need to be taken with a grain of salt, and it certainly does not provide "all you need to know"...

Book Description
This digital document is an article from T H E Journal (Technological Horizons In Education), published by T.H.E. Journal, LLC on March 1, 1997. The length of the article is 2328 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. From the supplier: Most people still access the Internet through dial-up connections, but new technologies such as ADSL, ISDN and cable modems hold great promise for the future. US Robotics' new x2 technology lets modem users download data at 56 Kbps, so long as the ISP supports the technology. However, most of the newest modems run at 33.6 Kbps. ISDN modems are typically more expensive, but have recently become easier to use and a little less costly. Products like 3Com's 3ComImpact IQ external ISDN modem can be used on both PC and Macintosh systems, and through a combination of data compression and 128 Kbps data sessions, can deliver an effective throughput of 230 Kbps. Other innovations, such as Internet appliances and handheld computers with built-in modems, hold great promise for facilitating easier access to the Internet.
