Apple iMac Desktop with 20" Display MA876LL/A (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive) The book started well enough but as it went on it became a book for people more advanced than me. Alot of things were not covered to the extent that it didn't lead anywhere. also did not have a glossary of terms, and that left me blind to what I was reading. Anyway I use as a go to when I get lost.
Sincerely Al

1 out of 5 stars Not for Mac OS-X.......2007-05-07

Outdated and obsolete. Of little use for my new iMac running on OS-X. Amazon was gracious enough to take the book back and refund my money.

2 out of 5 stars Very useful but not perfect.......2007-03-20

When things do not go according to its instructions it can leave you with nowhere else to go, as when I connected the FireWire, according to its instructions, and the 'continue' button remained grey leaving me at a loss. Still, as I said, very useful.

1 out of 5 stars iMac for Dummies.......2007-03-08

The book mentions all the things you can do, but most of the time not how to do it.

4 out of 5 stars iMac for Dummies, 4th Edition.......2007-02-20

Good tool. Not as funny as earlier dummies books on Mac's. It was slighty outdated, as my new IMac had newer items included, that were not in book. Still would recommend.

This quick reference was recommended with my purchase of iMac for Dummies operating system 10. Unfortunately it is a reference for system 9 and Appleworks, which is not included in the new iMac. I felt it should have not been recommended by Amazon as it is outdated.

5 out of 5 stars A good guide for beginning Imac users.......2000-12-04

The Imac for Dummies by Jennifer Watson is a very useful guide for amature Imac users. The insturctions are so easy to follow that even those intimidated by computers are encouraged when techniques are easily applied. This quick reference covers a wide range of topics. From basic instruction on desk top/home base use, mastering files, and discs, to connecting to the Internet, sending and receiving faxes and e-mails, and editing videos and exporting movies. It also includes a handy glossary of key terms.

I gave this book a five star rating because it fullfilled my needs as a beginning Imac user. It's a great guide for students of various ages. A wonderful supplement to technology curriculum. Personally, it helped me as I'm presently taking a fast pased computer-based education course. I use this book intermitently when I work on my own, at my own speed. I get quick, easy answers to questions I have about the Imac. This is a great start up book for those, who like myself, are new to the Imac. Once you feel comfortable with the Imac, this books serves as an excellent reference guide. I was able to help my boyfriend send a fax with his Imac. The book is small, easy to carry, and competitively priced. I highly recommend it.

Now that they've been around for a couple of years, older "Renaissance" Macs (meaning iMac and G-series computers) are starting to need upgrades. Upgrading and Fixing Macs and iMacs for Dummies shows how you can extend your Mac's set of capabilities and improve its performance through hardware additions and modifications. Author Todd Stauffer ably explains what you can do, and comments extensively on what's worth doing. He also documents some common failures (such as the "Click of Death" problem that crops up on some Iomega Zip drives) and explains how to deal with them.

Because Apple designed the Macintosh line with easy upgrades (among other things) in mind, the job of this book is mainly to explain what sorts of upgrade products you can buy and how to distinguish among them. In large measure, this is a matter of decoding jargon and explaining at a fairly high level how things work. For example, Stauffer goes into detail on video resolution and why you might want to replace your current monitor and video card with better ones, defining terms and trade names as he goes. He also tells how to perform some upgrades step by step: for instance, how to upgrade a processor chip and configure a Mac for use on an AppleTalk network. --David Wall

Topics covered: Hardware upgrades for iMac and PowerMac G-series computers, and the related software procedures. Input devices (keyboards, scanners, and the like), connectivity units (such as modems), monitors, storage media (including CD recorders, extra hard disks, removable disks, and tape drives), and network hardware.

    Book Description

Mac users can keep their new or older machines humming with this fun and easy guide to the internal workings of Macs and iMacs. The book explains, step by step, how to upgrade a Mac -- processor, RAM, video, removable storage, and almost anything else. It also shows how to use a little preventive medicine and how to diagnose your problem in order to help you decide whether you need to repair or upgrade. Common repair scenarios, from hard disk glitches to peripheral problems, are covered. And the little gems that make this ...For Dummies edition shine are a list of utilities for getting to know your inner-iMac and special G3 and G4 fixes. With this trusty guide, you'll be thinking different" in no time.

5 out of 5 stars Stauffer Knows His Stuff!.......2002-10-11

Get this book and replace paranoia with common sense!--Todd Stauffer explains which troubleshooting, upgrades, and repairs the average user can make on the Macintosh (most of them--they're easy), and which are best left to professionals (a few). There are also handy tables showing which Macs take what equipment (drives, peripherals, etc.), so you'll know what to get when you shop for that external hard drive or RAM chip. Go ahead, get this book, and save a bundle on computer work.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Companion for Vintage Mac Owner! Super Resource!.......2000-09-29

I really learned how my Mac works, RAM, Video, upgrading processors, USB, installing new Hard Drives and the like. In less than two weeks after buying this book, I installed two new Hard Drive in my Power Mac 7500, upgraded the processor to G3 300 MHz processor speed, installed a new Video Card. My old "vintage" Mac from 1996 is now up there with many of the latest. Best of all, I get to keep using ALL my SCSI peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.! ). Also, I don't. need to buy a new computer for 2-3 more years! This book is a real education and very engagingly and entertaininly written! This book saved way over a $1000.00 that I would have spent buying a new Mac. My upgraded 7500 is now a decent Photoshop, Office 98 and basic game machine. Kudos to the author! Now I'm going to graduate up to his more advanced book ... start with this one though! Thanks Todd!

Widely regarded as the greatest thing to come out of Apple Computer since the original Macintosh, the iMac is drawing thousands of new people into personal computing with its easy setup and friendly interface. While it's loaded with useful information, this guide doesn't overwhelm new and tentative iMac users. The book assumes that readers know nothing about the iMac and teaches skills that will allow them to explore the computer's capabilities without assistance--all while spouting wry humor.

The book begins its instruction by helping you pull the iMac out of its shipping box, hook up its cables, and turn it on. The author briefly but thoroughly explains how to use the mouse, how to identify and use various interface elements, and what various computer components (such as disk drives) are for. Slightly more complicated features, such as cutting, pasting, and printing, come next, followed by an explanation of the software that ships with the iMac and a good introduction to the Internet. Author David Pogue has a ton of experience writing about the Macintosh--he writes for MacWorld and is the author of the highly regarded Macs for Dummies. Pogue's light, welcoming style is perfect for newcomers. --David Wall

    Book Description

If you bought an iMac, you're unbelievably smart (and lucky). You've neatly eliminated most of the hassle, frustration, and annoyance that normally come with buying a computer. You've saved yourself some cash, while still getting a fast, state-of-the-art machine. In short, the iMac is the gadget that comes closest to fulfilling the vision of Apple founder Steve Jobs: to make a personal computer that's as easy to use as your toaster.

So, if the iMac is so easy to use, then who needs a book about it?

Well, despite all the free goodies that come with your iMac, an operations manual is not one of them. You need somewhere to turn when things go wrong, when you'd like to know what the add-on software does, or when you want to stumble onto the Internet for the first time. That's where The iMac For Dummies, 2nd Edition, steps in to help.

Here's a sampling of the topics you'll find covered in The iMac For Dummies, 2nd Edition:

So, if you've just picked up an iMac and you want to get up to speed quickly, or if you've been a Mac user for years and need some additional pointers, The iMac For Dummies, 2nd Edition, can get you on your way to making the most of your Mac experience.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful before buying this book!.......2003-03-12

I ordered this book for my mother, who just purchased her first computer, an iMac. The book came, and I looked at the back cover, where it states this book covers Mac OS 9. HELLO! Mac OS 10 is the current OS, and very different in nature from OS 9.

So while this may be a great book, it may be worthless to you if you are buying a new Mac.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Cure for The: "What the Hell NOW!?!"s.......2001-04-17

... This book - The iMac For DUMMIES (2nd Edition / ©2000) - is the PERFECT CURE for the: "What the Hell NOW!?!"s. : ) ... I'm serious! After reading this book, I feel a LOT more secure and a LOT more relaxed when sitting in front of my Apple computer. This book by David Pogue is a Godsend! In fact, in my case, it was a DOUBLE Godsend - because it was a gift from Amy Tine and Cindy Tello, two fine ladies who cared to find out what made me tick! (Thank you, Amy & Cindy ! :)

... It took me a LONG time to read this book, because when it comes to tools this powerful, one cannot be too careful - and I tend to be a VERY careful person, especially with complicated and sophisticated technology. ...Anyway, it takes time to read this book, because you gotta read it when you are sitting in front of your computer. So, just accept that fact, and then GO AT IT!

... I love the sense of humor of this guy - David Pogue. He really makes a dry topic a fun read. Any book that mentions The Smashing Pumpkins is fine by me! ... You will learn A LOT! ... One EXAMPLE: on page 327, David teaches you how to do what is called: Rebuilding the Desktop File. ... I did it. (As I did just about ALL of the motions he puts you through. I thought I was back in Driver's Ed again!) I can unequivocally state that after having done what he said to do, the damn computer ran MUCH faster - and I'm packing 256 megabytes of RAM, 30 gigabytes of ROM, with a 500 megahertz Apple G3 Power Chip, over AT&T Cable Road Runner ISP service! ... The tips he gives you are great! You will NEVER regret having spent the time to read this book - and don't be misled by other reviews: it WILL take time; but it's WORTH it.

... I also bought FIVE other Apple iMac books: My iMac / 2nd Edition by Andrew Gore; I'm Turning On My iMac, Now What? by Chris Sandlund (which I already read as a "dip your toes in the water" introduction); How To Do Everything With Your iMac / Second Edition by Todd Stauffer; Sams Teach Yourself The iMac in 24 Hours / Second Edition by Gene Steinberg; and The Little iMac Book / Second Edition by Robin Williams. Like I said: I'm a real CAREFUL person! (I also WORK in a BOOKSTORE - so I get a discount, thank goodness! : ) I have only SKIMMED through most of these books, but they ALL look great, and I hope to read ALL of them. (Lord knows WHEN?! : ) I'll let you know what I think when I do.

... Anyway, if you want to learn how to do more than just e-mail and surf the web; if you REALLY want to know what makes your computer tick - inside & out - and have a hankering to get into the guts & gears, and nuts & bolts of understanding how this baby (or beast?) runs; then grab this book - and keep it BY your computer at all times; because there is NO WAY you are ever going to REMEMBER all the stuff in this book (at least not right away - if ever! : ) ... The iMac does NOT come with a MANUAL. Now, maybe this NEW, paisley-print / tie-dye / hippie, iTunes, Music-oriented one does ("Jeez! If I had only waited another six months!" - Same Old Story : ), but I doubt it. So, you're going to need SOME kind of book like this so you don't drive the guy at the computer store CRAZY with all your questions! (Thanks, Rick! : ) ... Just sit back, put on The Grateful Dead, pretend you're back in college, crack open the book, press that ON Button on the front of your iMac, and get ready to learn HOW to DO things with, and FIX things in, your beautiful new computer. This book makes it easy to wade through the trees and see the forest for what it is: a real silicon jungle WITH PATHS that go through it - if you KNOW where to look. ... LOOK HERE! ... YOWZA! - The Aeolian Kid

3 out of 5 stars The iMac for dummies.......2001-02-27

The book is very funny and does get you started. If you want to use it for a quick reference after you have read it, the jokes get in the way. Doesn't cover OS9 hardly at all. That was my main problem. I have OS9 and this book is probably great for OS8 and older. Would not recommend for OS9.

5 out of 5 stars Overall absolutely indispensible and terrific!.......2000-11-29

I bought the iMac for Dummies (© 1998) in December 1999 before buying my very first computer, and iMac DVD Graphite Special with a 9.0.3 Operating System in March 2000, knowing very little about computers. With the help of this book, Apple (including their toll free number the owner can call for help for three months from the date of purchase--they also offer an additional three years of help and a Tech Tool to diagnose any problems that arise of purchase avaiable to the owner within three months of the date of purchase) and the iMac itself I been able to learn to operate my own computer, an ongoing process. This book is very helpful for people who know little or nothing about the iMac or computers in general, especially people who may never be able to become very advanced at all (unless they do) --because between the iMac, Apple and this book, it should be posssible for them to learn to operate it adequately for whatever their purposes are or may become. This book is so helpful from the very beginning to wherever it may take you ongoingly, that it is an absolute godsend and I cannot recoomend strongly enough that you buy it and the iMac. They are perfect for people who know little/nothing about computers and/or are intimidated by them and/or realistically would have trouble operating one (as well as others who just don't want any unnecessary difficulties/complications). If you are like any or all of the foregoing, what might be at least very difficult or maybe even impossible for you, this book, ( together with the iMac and Apple) will undoubtely make the difficult easy enough, the scary at least a lot less scary and possible to handle, and the maybe really impossible to do more than possible. Something that others have not mentioned for whoever may be interested which recently proved to be a revelation to me because when I first tried to do what he said to do it didn't seem work as he said it would are his instructions (page 108) under the heading Accent Heaven. While the presentation/humor may seem dumb, and while the instuctions that apply to a foreign language apply only to French and are not complete for that language, they turn out to be invaluable and a little trial and error experimentation following these instruction exactly, using the rest of the keys on the keyboard reveals what's missing on that page for that language as well as for at least German, Spanish, Portuguese and probably others. What I was told by Apple for French in particular is that I had to access the Keyboard Layout feature via the Apple Menu and select the needed keyboard layout. (There are too many of these to mention but for only for languages using the Roman alphabet). This is quite a hassle because when you use a different keyboard layout most or all of the letters are no longer in the same location on the keyboard as with standard USA English keyoard layout. Also, if you are going to do that you need to copy/memorize the locations of the letters you use using that keyboard layout because while you can access a representation of the keyboard layout that's in effect then so that it appears on the screen , it doesn't stay there when you start to type . Also, on my computer, it took both the Swiss French and the French French Keyboard layouts (which couldn't both be used at the same time) to have everything I needed for either. Much too much toggling back and forth and too many unnecessary steps were involoved that way. His method is so vastly superior that I use it instead. Following his instructions is easier, simpler, more efficient, less time consuming and more comfortable. What is not right there on the page can be found by trial and error following the same instructions right on the same keyboard ( using only the standard USA English keyboard layout). I highly recommend buying this book especially for the beginner but also for anyone who wants to get to know the iMac and possibly buy one which I highly recommed that they do they really are very superior. BTW, For anyone interested in this, the 9.0.3 (and up) operating system comes with additional foreign language capacity (on the hard drive) so that the user can type and edit in languages using other than the Roman alphabet.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF MACS FOR DUMMIES.......1999-12-29

I recieved this book for Christmas and I am giving it five stars even though I was very dissappointed with it. This s a great book if you have never owned a Macintosh before. But if you have had a Macintosh before skip it. For it is nothing more than a revised edition of David Pogue's other book, Macs for Dummies (The book I cut my Mac teeth on.)

My favorite tip from the book, by the way, is to put an alias (you'll learn what that is and how to create one in the first few chapters) in a file called Start Up Items. Each time you start your computer, every item (like say America On Line) will be launched automatically.

But again, if you know how to use a Macintosh, this book isn't going to help you with the iMac...

Let's be clear about what this item is: it's a boxed set of two books. One, The iMac for Dummies, is a superb guide to the iMac by David Pogue, an excellent writer and long-time Mac icon. The other, The Internet for Macs for Dummies, is a solid introduction to electronic mail and Web surfing as viewed through a Mac lens. If you don't have either book already, The iMac Internet Kit for Dummies represents a decent value--you save about 25 percent on the collective price of the two books purchased separately.

The iMac for Dummies emphasizes the iMac hardware and the fundamentals of Mac OS 8.5 (which is largely the same as later versions). Pogue deploys his keen wit and gift for describing detail (without being a bore) against everything that comes in the iMac box. Every iMac user should read this book.

The Internet for Macs for Dummies appeals to Internet novices. Author Charles Seiter explains how to hook your Macintosh to the Internet, communicate with other people, and visit cool Web sites while online. He doesn't restrict himself to the iMac but covers the same Mac OS 8.5 that the iMac runs. --David Wall

Topics covered: Setting up your iMac, using Mac OS 8.5, using the software that ships with the iMac, connecting to the Internet, Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape Navigator 4.5, and Web searching.

2 out of 5 stars The iMac Internet for Dummies Bundle.......1999-11-28

The content of this book is easy to understand, however, too elementary. This book is not necessarily for an i-Mac beginner, but someone who has never owned a computer.

2 out of 5 stars The title is totally misleading.......1999-10-19

I agree word for word with the reader from Brixey, MO. The description should have made it clear what the Kit consisted of. Delightful as anything by David Pogue is, I certainly don't need two of the same book. Major bummer!

2 out of 5 stars The title of the offering is misleading........1999-10-15

I expected David Pogue's delightful and insightful take on using my new IMac specifically to surf the Internet. What I got was David Pogue's IMac for Dummies (a terrific book which I had already bought and which included some info on surfing the Net!) and The Internet for Macs for Dummies, a general thing by some other guy on using any old Mac to surf the Internet.Am I disappointed? You bet!

5 out of 5 stars "This is the one for new iMac owners" Fred Showker, UGNN.......1999-05-25

If you are a new iMac owner you'll want to pick up this book -- for sure. Two reasons: 1) David Pogue probably knows more about Macs than any other writer on the scene today, and 2) Davids wit and personality shine through every page making 'Dummies' not only highly informative but a pleasure to read as well. This one will get you up and running in no time at all. . . . Fred Showker, The User Group Network News Service
