5 out of 5 stars I regret not having bought it sooner!.......2006-12-17

If you have a mobile computer (for example, a PocketPC) that runs on a Windows platform, you probably found the instruction manual grossly inadequate. I know I did. I also found some basic, expected functionality missing from my PocketPC and immediately set about finding third-party applications to resolve those deficiencies. Along the way, I found out just how frustrating it is to set up or even use a mobile computer without something other than just the manual to serve as an information source.

What a jewel I found in this book on Windows Mobile! Most computer-related books are either way too simple to be of any use, or they are written for people who don't need a manual in the first place. This one is targeted squarely at the typical user.

I have a real problem with "newbie" books that assume you can't read a display menu. This book doesn't start at that point. It starts with the assumption you don't live under a rock and aren't too lazy to click a few things to see what they do. It also doesn't assume you have an advanced degree in computer programming. My first reaction when reading this was, "Pinch me--I must be dreaming!" Definitely a great value for every penny spent and definitely worth the time spent reading it.

The book is arranged logically, with five major parts. Part One focuses on the "get started" issues. It starts off by explaining the Windows Mobile platform. It then provides some basics about the devices that run on Windows Mobile, so you're not lost in later sections. After this, it explains various settings--what they mean and what you can do with them. It ends by addressing specifics with Smartphones.

Part II helps you master using your laptop or desktop PC with your Windows Mobile device. I found this extraordinarily helpful, because the manual for my device left me to bumble and stumble in needless pain and misery. But now, I am very comfortable using my laptop to manage my Pocket PC. If you are wondering what the heck "manage" means in this context, you need to read this book!

One operation I don't do is synchronization--I find that far too scary. What if it wipes out the files on the computer? The first time I tried this process, it created all kinds of problems and I had to restore my computer's calendar and e-mail from a backup. To prevent a disaster, I now use my laptop rather than my desktop to do things on my Pocket PC.

A weakness in the book is it doesn't explain how to selectively synchronize. It gives a hint, though--setting up a special mail profile for this may solve the problem of unwanted "updates." But it doesn't address this problem directly. The synchronization function needs to be fixed, so that a person can use it without the risk of losing data. A well-explained workaround would have been nice.

Part III addresses many issues I don't care about and that don't affect people who have broadband service with their Pocket PC. If you have to use a dialup, though, this information is indispensable.

Part IV talks mostly about various applications that strike me as laptop or desktop stuff. For example, running spreadsheets and databases on your Pocket PC. Maybe my view is just too narrow. To me, the small screen and tiny keyboard mean you pretty much stick to calling, e-mailing, and doing minor text work. In an age where 21-inch CRTs and 17-inch LCDs dominate desktops, it seems ridiculous to try to cram those same applications into a screen that is 1.75 x 2.75 inches. If you can't have a laptop with you, then maybe the actual work can wait. It may seem unbelievable, but there was a time when people weren't expected to respond to a call 24 hrs a day and were expected to go back to the office to update a file.

Throughout the book, there are resource recommendations with accurate URLs provided. I followed up on many of these and found some excellent applications at reasonable prices.

If you are looking at any kind of computer/phone combo, get this book first. Yes, that applies to thinking about a Blackberry or PalmPilot, too. I was originally going to buy a Blackberry, but my product research led me to select a PocketPC instead. I have never regretted that choice. I bought this book several months after buying my device (I didn't know there was such a book, until then). My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Useful for Anyone.......2006-09-30

How to Do Everything with Your Pocket PC and Handheld PC explores the latest developments in the Microsoft Windows CE universe. Specifically, it takes a user-level look at the new Pocket PC specification and the somewhat older Handheld PC design. If you use an HP Jornada, Casio Cassiopeia, Compaq iPaq, or similar personal digital assistant (PDA) and feel sure you're not getting maximum utility from it, you'll appreciate this carefully paced and liberally illustrated explanation of Windows CE, the hardware it runs on, and the software that makes it productive and fun. Odds are good that no matter how long you've been using your Microsoft-based miniature computer, you'll learn something new here.

The approach of the book isn't fancy, but it does the job. Pocket PC and Handheld PC features are diligently explained one at a time. Users want to know how to do specific jobs, and the book was clearly written with that in mind. Conceptual explanations combined with procedures and illustrations help readers learn how to make their palm-size buddies do new tricks. Coverage is a bit short on applications other than those in the standard suite, but in-depth sections on multimedia management and Internet connectivity make up for that shortcoming. All together, this is a solid tutorial and reference manual for people who use PDAs based on Windows CE. --David Wall

Topics covered: Palm-size PCs that run Microsoft Windows CE and comply with the Pocket PC and Handheld PC specifications are explained for everyday users. There's documentation of the essential functions of the operating system and its most popular applications (especially Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, and Microsoft Money). Multimedia gets a lot of attention, as does Internet connectivity.

4 out of 5 stars Great starter book to learn the basics before moving on........2001-10-04

I found that this book was a great starter book when I first purchased my IPAQ. It was very useful and I still refer to it on a regular basis. It is more like the user's manual in print. I plan to buy another book to move me to the next level. But I would highly recommend this book as a reference book and keeper for anyone's library. Great job Mr. McPherson.

2 out of 5 stars Sub-par unless you're technologically ignorant.......2001-04-15

I was excited to get my hands on this book, hoping that it would shed further light on the potential of my already positive Pocket PC experience. This book did little to help me.

90% of it's content was pretty much common sense stuff that any person who has got a grasp of Windows and MS Office programs could figure out.

I wanted to know how to better manage memory. Do neat tricks with Pocket Word, Excel, and Outlook. All this book points you to is the basics that are in your owner's manual.

In comparision to other books on the subject, "Pocket PC Handbook" by Dan Hanttula, for example, this book was of little help. If you're looking to improve your knowledge of your Pocket PC go somewhere else. If you no nothing about computers, go someplace else. This book doesn't help unlease the pocket PC's potential. Go someplace else.

5 out of 5 stars Great Help for a New Pocket PC Owner.......2001-02-26

I bought the McPherson book shortly after buying my Jornada Pocket PC. This book is a must have for new handheld owners. It is very easy to understand and helps you become familiar with this incredible device. The book introduces you to functions that the owner's manual does not mention and in much greater detail. Illustrations are helpful. The book is well worth the money. I highly recommend the book and know that I will refer back to it in the months ahead. Before buying, I compared it to the Idiot's Guide and thought that this one was better, i.e., much more thorough.

3 out of 5 stars It doesn't tell you everything.......2001-01-30

The "How to Do Everything With Your..." series is a rather disappointing marketing gimmick. As with the other volumes, this book does not give you much information beyond the superficial. What irks me the most -- something I didn't realize when I purchased the book -- is that this book covers both Pocket PC and HandheldPC, which means you'll probably only need half of the book while paying for 300 pages of stuff you'll never use.

For the Pocket PC, the book walks you through how to set up your new toy and how to use the major applications: Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket Money, and Pocket Internet Explorer. (Pocket Access and PowerPoint for HandheldPC are also covered.) It was able to answer some of the questions I had had about using the Pocket PC, so it did prove helpful. At the same time, a lot of information is left out. For example, is there an optimal way to adjust the memory settings? The book doesn't tell you. Are there any third-party application switchers that automatically stop an application a la the Palm? The book doesn't tell you.

Another annoying thing about this book is that it was obviously written in a hurry to include Pocket PC features. It might have been a Windows CE book, so you see WinCE references everywhere. As of today there's only one other good Pocket PC book (forget about "Pocket PC for Dummies" and save some money), "Unauthorized Guide to Pocket PC", and I recommend that one over this one.

5 out of 5 stars How to Do Everything with Your Pocket PC and Handheld PC.......2000-11-14

As a new user I have recommended this book to everyone who shows interest in purchasing a palm handheld. It enabled me to do things that I would never have learned to do with the instruction book that came with my Palm. In order to get the most use from your Palm, this book is a must!!

3 out of 5 stars Bare Bones Approach.......2005-07-13

I had neither the time nor the inclination to learn Acrobat 6.0. Unfortunately, I did have the need to learn it. I took a new approach for me. I ordered this book, gave it to my nephew to learn (I paid for his time) and told him to learn the program forward and backward. He was then to give me an "executive summary" type of instruction and I would rely on him to do anything beyond the basics. The approach worked, after a fashion but I could have chosen a better text. He learned the basics of the program well. The advanced capabilities were not thoroughly addressed.

In his words: found the "How to Do Everything with Adobe Acrobat 6.0" instructional book to be helpful to an extent. It did a good job instilling the basics but once you reach a certain point you begin to lose understanding for lack of actual interaction with the program. Many instructional guides come with an exercise disc that allows you to participate in different exercises and projects that better your understanding of the program. This particular guide does not, and as a result it is harder to understand certain topics. It has good examples and good illustrations but the lack of hands on experience is crucial.

In short, I am satisfied, barely.

2 out of 5 stars The operative word here is "Lightweight".......2005-03-14

I'm still searching for a really amazing, knock my socks off Adobe Acrobat book, that will take me beyond what I could find in the Acrobat help, or figure out myself. I can capably make a PDF from Word or any other application, I don't care about embedding multimedia, and I still see a sore need to find a book that covers forms really well. This book fails both the breadth test and the depth test; it might as well be one of the "dummies" books. Thanks for nothing!

2 out of 5 stars Should Be Better.......2004-08-09

I purchased this book for an overview of Acrobat 6.0. While there is some good info, too much is not explained fully. There are constant cross references "see chapter 8", no page reference and the bulk of the book is for the pro version. The author spends a lot of time using fancy nomenclature (not technical terms) instead of offering better tips. I would love to see a Special Edition Using Acrobat from Que Publishing. That series is excellent for learning software. I will look for a better book.

3 out of 5 stars Well, it tells ALMOST everything..........2004-07-20

Not bad. Certainly contains a lot of information. It didn't help me figure out how to prevent photo quality loss when sending a file to a print shop (well, it told me why it happened but it didn't tell me exactly how to fix it). However... there are lots of neat tricks and tips for other Acrobat uses. It explained all the options in Distiller and that was helpful. I think we'll get use out of the book at our office... but I'm a little disappointed. It was probably worth the money though.

5 out of 5 stars Will help its reader master the many different components.......2003-09-15

From simple memos to interactive forms, How To Do Everything With Adobe Acrobat 6.0 shows why Acrobat is the tool for any electronic publishing task - including projects that require multimedia. How To Do Everything With Adobe Acrobat 6.0 will help its reader master the many different components and purposes for creating and publishing documents for electronic distribution.

2 out of 5 stars Dated Owner's Manual.......2004-11-08

Unfortunately this is not the best format to get up to date information on this subject. I suspected this but still bought the book. It read a lot like the owner's manual that came with my smartphone. Some the recommended links didn't work. I found a lot more useful information in current magazines or online forums.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Info for Smartphone Users.......2004-09-27

A collection of useful information for users - new and old - of Microsoft Windows Mobile Smartphones. The format makes the book very easy to either read or to use as a reference, with lots of pictures, tips, and notes. The book is well organized, and full of real-world examples and advice. It covers both the included basics, and additional software and accessories. As someone who develops and supports Smartphone software, I know how much a book like this is needed by the Smartphone community!

1 out of 5 stars May be th Worst XP book on the planet........2003-09-04

Truth is short. You can learn more from a retarded two year old. This book is the worst of the worst. If you just want to read a few XP buzz words then this is for you. If you want to learn something - start by saving your money. The "one star
rating" comes from my using the pages to start the barbeque.

1 out of 5 stars Save it for the nerds.......2003-04-29

Publishers ought to realize that people buy computer books because they want topics explained to them in plain terms that they can understand. This book is very poorly written. I can't count the number of times I scratched my head and had to read instructions over again to try to interpret what the author was saying.

      Save this one for nerds.

4 out of 5 stars view of "How to do Everything With Windows XP".......2002-05-04

I found this book very readable and helpful, as it covers virtually all the headings and functions of xp, detailing even the different tab headings. I would criticise the fact that it doesn't mention detail such as the fact you need software to play dvd and the limitations to cd burning. However it helped me out of a scrape as it gives helpful info on how to recover from potential pc problems - such as how to use system restore. Useful advanced detail for those interested. I'd buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use and Comprehesive.......2001-11-18

Great book, learned the in's & out's of XP in no time. I found the book to be well organized and easy to understand. Each chapter gives step by step instructions to do just about everything imaginable with Windows XP. It appears the author has taken extra effort in providing a well referenced index, so finding applications and definitions can quickly be found. Great as a reference tool. I highly reccomend this book.

3 out of 5 stars not up to date.......2007-09-03

The book is a blend of mediocre information. You would expect from a book published in 2006 that it would be all about Windows Mobile 5, it is not! Besides it mixes up the old and the new in the same paragraph! It is utterly confusing. You would expect at the very least a delineation between the two. I was expecting a lot more

2 out of 5 stars Not great for WM 5.0.......2007-01-05

I bought this book before I got my iPAQ in the hopes that it would give me a head start on using it, but there isn't enough detail on any instructions to actually be able to use the manual. For example, it says includes Windows Mobile 5 model info, but when I wanted to find out how to adjust the Program vs Storage memory slider, it only refers to previous Windows versions. Also, there is a lot of information on how to use your iPAQ phone, which of course I do not have the phone version. Basically a useless book.

5 out of 5 stars How to Do Everything with Your IPAQ Oicjet OC.......2006-03-12

Excellent! As a new user of an older model IPAQ with NO documentation, this book got me up and running very quickly.

2 out of 5 stars Lacking in Details.......2004-10-15

This book does a good job of telling you what your IPAQ can do but a very poor job of telling you how to do it. I wanted more information about how to set up my IPAQ to connect with the internet. The book told me it could be done and how wonderful it was, but lacked specific information about which screen to go to and how to actually make it work.

I later purchased IPAQ for Dummies. This book told me what the IPAQ could do and specifically how to do it. It was great. The Dummies book also gave lots of information on programs that are very helpful to add to your IPAQ.

I was disappointed with IPAQ Pocket PC but very happy to get my hands on IPAQ for Dummies!

1 out of 5 stars Only if you suffer from severe tech phobia.......2004-06-03

I bought this book based on highly favorable reviews here. I found this book to be a total waste of time and money. This book may be useful if you are a complete newbie, don't have access to an IT guy/gal and haven't a clue how to do a web search for info/tips.

Otherwise, don't bother. There is little info on the newer IPAQ's and none on the 2003 OS. This is hardly surprising given the 2002 copyright. Some 30% of the pages are dedicated to promotions of peripherals and games (pages 247 to 352 out of 352 pages, not including appendices). Most of the peripherals are now obsolete. More importantly, all this info can be found at any PDA site, for free.

This is a VERY basic text, yet it doesn't cover important items such as data backup and recovery. If it does, it certainly isn't listed in the index. Need to find out how to reset your IPAQ? Forget it. Not in the index and nowhere to be found in the text. However, you will find "Marble Madness" and "bags, carrying."

The text discusses various brands of storage cards, but fails to inform you on how to transfer data onto those cards. Two solid pages are dedicated to specs for an IBM hard drive - info which is available, for free, on the web. Nevermind the question of why someone who needs a hard drive for his PDA would be using this "IPAQ for the severely tech challenged" book?

Compare this to the three pages which the writer begrudgingly alots to troubleshooting and you get a sense of where the priorities are with this book. And by the way, those troubleshooting tips are either available on the web at the IPAQ webpage (guess what? for free) or for issues which have been resolved.

Do a Google search. It'll save you time, frustration and money.
