5 out of 5 stars Scottie.......2007-09-26

This is the best book I've found that helps to organize the integration space within the industry. This book has helped to organize my thoughts and communicate with others effectively on how to leverage integration patterns. I highly recommend this book to help obtain a foundational understaning of the integration space.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent patterns book.......2007-08-28

Upon recently changing jobs and focusing on messaging design and architecture, I was steered toward this book by my peers. Without getting into too much detail, before joining my new team, I had never heard of patterns (came from a product support area), much less asynchronous messaging design. Needless to say, this book has been invaluable in my learning process as well as conveying our direction to others.

This book is written in such a way that it is very intuitive. Diagrams help support the concepts and code examples as well.

I would highly recommend this as a must read/reference guide for anyone designing messaging solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for messaging pattern understanding.......2007-08-27

This is a fantastic book if you are looking for patterns to base your messaging designs and architecture around. The way this book goes about explaining some of the asynchronous messaging patterns seemed to provide a great deal of benefit to developers and designers who were stuck in the synchronous way of doing things. Great explanations and illustrations, would recommend to anyone researching EAI or ESB technologies or just a more structured, efficient way of messaging in general.

5 out of 5 stars Enterprise Application Integration .......2007-07-29

I've been using the patterns in this book for several years now. These patterns help me to focus on the problems my customers need solved rather than what technology to use. This has helped to produce numerous successful systems and these patterns have consequently become the basis for many architecural redesign efforts at my company.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for Enterprise Application Integration.......2007-07-12

As a developer working on application integration for the last 5 years I am so thrilled about this purchase. Just started out reading and though I feel a little overwhelmed I can so much relate to all the patterns being discussed. Its being tough to digest and register the terminologies but I am sure I will get there as I progress. Definitely the best technical books I have ever purchased and is must have for any one who is involved with application integration !

5 out of 5 stars Real-world SCM for real-world developers.......2007-09-28

This is an outstanding book for software development teams that see software configuration management as a means to an end, not the end itself. The author immediately establishes credibility with me when he says in the preface "Software configuration management is not what I do. I am not a software configuration management person...I build software systems" Exactly! It's obvious throughout the book that the authors develop software systems and use SCM to effectively support their development effort, not the other way around.

The format of the book is very consistent and thus very easy to read. Each pattern has its own chapter and clearly identifies the problem and the solution in a particular context. It doesn't waste any paper and is a quick read and has been a reference I continue to use on a regular basis. The authors have taken something that can quickly become complex and make it easy to understand.

The authors have a very natural writing style and effectively use sidebars to bring their real-world experiences to the pattern. This book is a must read for software developers. I wish I could give it six stars.

Given my background in CI, I was most drawn to the Mainline, Private Workspace, Repository, Private System Build, Integration Build, Regression Test, and Third Party Codeline patterns. But, there is something for all developers and teams here.

1 out of 5 stars Very little useful information.......2007-09-11

I am surprised to apparently be the only person to find this book disappointing. Let me go into the details.

Physical book.
I rarely comment on the physical book but I need to mention the bad printing. Many pictures and graphs in the book are not printed correctly. Instead they appear as gray rectangles.

Content.
The book is divided into three parts: an introduction, the Software Configuration Management (SCM) patterns, and appendices with information on SCM systems.

The introduction is a waste of paper. The author spends time defining concepts (such as 'organization') without bringing any insights to configuration management. I assume that part was written to fill in the book. You can safely skip it.

Some of the patterns are useful and nicely presented. The need for a mainline and how to branch before a release are the two that stand out. They are good advice. Unfortunately most patterns are not explained appropriately. For example, the author presents several patterns related to tests (unit tests, smoke tests, regression tests). The patterns explain why you would want to do those tests. The problem is that the author does not make the connection to configuration management. What are the best practices to integrate tests with SCM? The answer is not in the book.

The final part about the various SCM systems is again a filler with little usefulness.

There are several topics I wish had been included:
- Topology: how best to distribute the SCM system.
- Buddy builds: what are the best practices related to buddy builds, i.e., building before making a check-in.

I was looking forward to reading this book. Now that I have, I feel very much let down. The useful information could be contained in less than 10 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Mileage working with software development teams .......2007-03-21

Objective, clear and simple. War stories told by a intellectually savvy trooper are not complex. They tell us about complex scenarios in a simple way. Field experience. It's what this book is all about. Not about procedures, but practices based on well known, or not so, patterns, for you to use with your teams to win your battles. It's up to you. Think about them. Use them wisely.
Sorry for the military metaphor but seemed to me appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for leads, managers, and build masters.......2006-10-18

There really aren't too many books that cover the subject of SCM and this one does a very good job of overviewing all the issues. Although he does give examples and opinions on different tools and platforms, the book is not written for any particular one. I especially like the fact that he is coming from a developer's perspective in the sense that the need for SCM has been brought upon him, like most of us, and it's not something he initially persued. Things like source control directory structure, versioning, builds, build policies, etc. are issues that are eventually dealt with by tech leads and/or tech managers but few usually have any formal experience with it. Anyone who has been in a small or large development shop knows how critical these issues are to the entire development process.

I also bought Build Master by Vincent Maraia which is also an excellent book but I felt that his position has always been specifically a build master and the book dealt with very large build projects that had dedicated teams. In constrast, Berczuk and Appleton's book is more broad so that a lone developer/manager assigned to the daunting tasks of setting up SCM environments can achieve this and have a general guide for holding down the fort.

5 out of 5 stars Just the book that SCM needed.......2006-10-13

One of the most annoying things about Software Configuration Management is the amount of different terms that exist - especially when the refer to the same things! This seminal book helps address this challenge by identifying a set of readily consumable and well defined patterns. If you don't know your code mainline from your active development line, or how developer testing, building and integration are all linked together, then you need to read this book.

Book Description

Large IT organizations increasingly face the challenge of integrating various web services, applications, and other technologies into a single network. The solution to finding a meaningful large-scale architecture that is capable of spanning a global enterprise appears to have been met in ESB, or Enterprise Service Bus. Rather than conform to the hub-and-spoke architecture of traditional enterprise application integration products, ESB provides a highly distributed approach to integration, with unique capabilities that allow individual departments or business units to build out their integration projects in incremental, digestible chunks, maintaining their own local control and autonomy, while still being able to connect together each integration project into a larger, more global integration fabric, or grid. Enterprise Service Bus offers a thorough introduction and overview for systems architects, system integrators, technical project leads, and CTO/CIO level managers who need to understand, assess, and evaluate this new approach. Written by Dave Chappell, one of the best known and authoritative voices in the field of enterprise middleware and standards-based integration, the book drills down into the technical details of the major components of ESB, showing how it can utilize an event-driven SOA to bring a variety of enterprise applications and services built on J2EE, .NET, C/C++, and other legacy environments into the reach of the everyday IT professional. With Enterprise Service Bus, readers become well versed in the problems faced by IT organizations today, gaining an understanding of how current technology deficiencies impact business issues. Through the study of real-world use cases and integration patterns drawn from several industries using ESB--including Telcos, financial services, retail, B2B exchanges, energy, manufacturing, and more--the book clearly and coherently outlines the benefits of moving toward this integration strategy. The book also compares ESB to other integration architectures, contrasting their inherent strengths and limitations. If you are charged with understanding, assessing, or implementing an integration architecture, Enterprise Service Bus will provide the straightforward information you need to draw your conclusions about this important disruptive technology.

5 out of 5 stars ESB/SOA Highlevel Theory in Practice & Practical Examples.......2007-09-26

This book, which was published in 2004, still remains as one of the best books in my personal collection of Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), SOA and related books.

The author does a good job of introducing a new computer architecture paradigm! And this is to think of software like hardware. Like hardware, have components that are plug-and-play into a standard bus. Standard interfaces, standard input/output, etc.

I found the first three chapters as extremely useful for an overall view. Then I recommend skipping to the fold out to study symbols and icons. Then, I studied chapter 9 which is about ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) as an example that tries to help us understand the essence of ESB. I also spent time on understanding, chapters 10, 11, and 12 which give a good understanding of the Components, Integration, and Web Services. Other chapters in between, for example EAI, MOM, JMS and XML should be looked at more like the "Old paradigm". But if you are focused on ESB/SOA above chapters will give you an excellent overall architecture picture, and, a good taste of what it takes, and what different terms mean.

I also think that the author has done a good job of explaining things whith what was available then. This is an evolving and maturing technology even now.

I also tried to understand these concepts as they related to BEA WebLogic 9.2 and/or IBM WebSphere to bring more practical parallel understanding. This did help.

3 out of 5 stars Gives a high level overview of ESB .......2007-08-01

I wanted a book that gave me an clear understanding of what an ESB is, and this book did exactly that. While the figures were illustrative, I felt that more reading material could have been added. The two chapters that were useful were Chapters 1 and 11.

But like I said in my first sentence, it gave me an high level understanding of an ESB.

2 out of 5 stars Too much fluff, no substance.......2007-03-05

I found this book to provide a good introduction in the first chapter, but it was extremely wordy in describing SOA and ESB principles. The definitions were polluted with buzzwords and sales jargon to the point of being painful. It's "marketecture."

A book that provides a concise and clear definition of SOA principles is "Enterprise SOA: Service-Oriented Architecture Best Practices" by Dirk Krafzig, Karl Banke, Dirk Slama. While better than Enterprise Service Bus, this book also does not entirely meet the needs of a computer professional embarking on a large Enterprise software project.

I still have not found a book that provides the necessary guidance with regard to architectural principles, architectural styles, communicating an architecture effectively and evaluating/analyzing existing architectures.

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting insights, but a bit too high-level for me.......2007-02-12

The book provides some interesting insights into emerging technologies, but overall is too high-level and, in the end, pretty vague on the ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) architecture. The basic idea is that you should use asynchronous messaging in XML and leave all routing/aggregation/security/transformations to a special integration layer called ESB, like a product produced by author's company. This would give you more integration by configuration rather than coding, the argument goes. Author described how a lot of recent XML standards are going toward or adding async model. All in all, ESB seems to be pretty much Message Oriented Middleware (MOM), but with (somewhat inconsistent) emphasis on open on-the-wire protocol. I wish this was distilled in a sentence upfront.

So far so good. But what on-the-wire messaging protocol should we use? It appears the author is saying anything and all goes - just maybe add XML. This is where it starts being vague as if for fear to upset anybody. So, is ESB basically about just putting any XML on the wire? Not all XML is the same (just as binary content was not), and author in fact points out competing standards on XML messaging. There are a lot of decisions on top of "let's just use XML" on which the author leaves you to your own devices. He just covers all upcoming XML standards from A..Z in a few sentences each. It is the sort of "XML will save the world regardless of how it is used" approach that worries me.

At the same time, a lot of space is dedicated to JMS. The author tentatively explains that JMS is not really suitable for ESB because it does not provide an open on-the-wire protocol - only standard APIs. I am glad he covered this because this is a wide misconception. But then why JMS presented as one of nice re-usable building blocks for ESB? I think he is saying because it provides comprehensive framework for messaging. Ok. But proprietary on-the-wire format means it is not really suitable for ESB unless you find a product that uses XML transport under JMS API. The author does not explain this nor discuss how standard is that JMS-API-to-wire bridge today, so the whole JMS tie-in with ESB's supposedly open architecture was not clear to me.

As a practitioner, I also wish there were a bit more insights into how redundancy and errors are to be handled in this architecture. Also, how transactional semantics are handled end-to-end in such environment. The examples with reliable messaging are too simplistic and abstract to cover the real challenges involved. All of this may hide the extra complexity and overhead actually pushed on application with asynchronous and highly loosely coupled ESB design. Maybe the trade-offs would still favor it, but a bit more points of analysis would help to enlighten the reader.

It is interesting that the author takes on application servers and argues that they are not good for ESB infrastructure (unlike for source applications themselves). I appreciate that the author is not afraid to go against the grain if it makes for a good technical choice (same could be applied to JMS), but I wish the arguments were a bit clearer and specific. For example, the author claims that app server is not suitable for loosely coupled component deployment. I wish he explained why because obviously JEE proponents may be curious.

In the end, this book is more of an overview of Sonic ESB product deployment architecture, rather than necessarily an IT architecture. Be aware of that, but do read the book for yet another perspective. I found the book pretty easy to read - only took me an hour.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate ESB book.......2005-10-03

Frankly, I feel that some reviewers misunderstand the purpose of this book. In my opinion, for a SOA focussed professional who needs to know the role of SOA, this book is a gem! Any of us who have had the challenge of explaining messaging technology should be grateful about reading this book.

As technologists, we forget just how much intimidating jargon we use and how many underlying assumptions we make when we explain things. As a software architect once said to me, "if I had more time, I'd make it simple." Clearly Mr.Chappell has taken on the challenge of making it simple and made it in such a way even an idiot can understand, and such efforts are incredibly valuable.

    Book Description

Web mining aims to discover useful information and knowledge from the Web hyperlink structure, page contents, and usage data. Although Web mining uses many conventional data mining techniques, it is not purely an application of traditional data mining due to the semistructured and unstructured nature of the Web data and its heterogeneity. It has also developed many of its own algorithms and techniques.

Liu has written a comprehensive text on Web data mining. Key topics of structure mining, content mining, and usage mining are covered both in breadth and in depth. His book brings together all the essential concepts and algorithms from related areas such as data mining, machine learning, and text processing to form an authoritative and coherent text.

The book offers a rich blend of theory and practice, addressing seminal research ideas, as well as examining the technology from a practical point of view. It is suitable for students, researchers and practitioners interested in Web mining both as a learning text and a reference book. Lecturers can readily use it for classes on data mining, Web mining, and Web search. Additional teaching materials such as lecture slides, datasets, and implemented algorithms are available online.

Microsoft offers you a concise guide to integrating their products into your application. It has best patterns, based on the expertise of their own programmers.

Given the complexity of the various Microsoft technologies, you should pay careful heed. Those technologies include the BizTalk Server 2004, SQL Server 2003 and sundry XML libraries. More importantly, given the prevalence of attacks, the guidelines may be the safest, conservative approach.

The question of work-life balance and the difficulties of managing multiple roles is attracting considerable interest. This international collection broadens the focus of these debates and presents recent research findings that will further stimulate theoretical development and empirical studies. While much previous research has focused on the challenges faced by working mothers, the research presented in this collection introduces perspectives that have not been widely included in previous work in the field, such as the voice of children, the challenges that students face, the role of both employers and unions and how different occupational groups experience work-life balancing strategies.

            Book Description

Symbolic processing has limitations highlighted by the symbol grounding problem. Computational processing methods, like fuzzy logic, neural networks, and statistical methods have appeared to overcome these problems. However, they also suffer from drawbacks in that, for example, multi-stage inference is difficult to implement. Deep fusion of symbolic and computational processing is expected to open a new paradigm for intelligent systems. Symbolic processing and computational processing should interact at all abstract or computational levels. For this undertaking, attempts to combine, hybridize, and fuse these processing methods should be thoroughly investigated and the direction of novel fusion approaches should be clarified. This book contains the current status of this attempt and also discusses future directions.

3 out of 5 stars Not deep enough and poor examples........2006-06-30

This book covers many topics, unfortunately it does not go into great detail and less than a hello world example. I am confused and don't know what the authors really mean about interoperbility with this book. The content is a bit vague and poorly written. The examples are hardly usable and the best practices sections does'nt make sense. Some of the topics covered have nothing to do with interoperability, they are integration topics. If you are really looking integration guidance, choose Enterprise Integration Patterns by Gregor Houpe et all.

3 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough and poor examples.......2006-05-24

The first couple of chapters are OK. Thereafter I found the integration concepts and strategies half done and hardly complete. The code examples are not commented at all. I noticed the code would work only on sun application server and the configuration details are not discussed are missing. I tried to deploy the code example using websphere 6 it did'nt run at all. The chapters in part3 and part4 are more of theoretical coverage and kind of standards work in progress. In comparison, I like Application Interoperability - Patterns and Best Practices from Microsoft Press over this book. This book did'nt help me at all.

4 out of 5 stars Good information for the right audience..........2006-05-22

As much as Microsoft might want you to be an all-.NET shop, the reality of the enterprise computing environment is that both .NET and Java will be used in some way, shape, or form. If you're a developer or architect responsible for integrating platforms, this book could help you out... The book is targeted towards developers as well as architects and managers responsible for these types of projects. The focus and approach tends more towards the practical, "here's one way to do it" methodology. There's no hesitation to suggest third-party frameworks and applications to help you accomplish something, as well as providing enough code to allow the reader to get a feel for how it all fits together. It's not a comprehensive approach to every last thing you need to know, but if you're charged with platform integration, this will give you the practical foundation you'll need to start examining the options available to you.

Given the right needs and the right audience, it'll offer value to the reader...
