Book Description
The Encyclopedia of Computers and Computer History provides a complete A-to-Z reference guide to computers, their development, and their usage in today's world. Beginning with "Abacus," this two-volume set provides over 900 pages of facts, definitions, biographies, histories, and explanations of a remarkable variety of computer-related subjects.
The Encyclopedia's 600 entries--many of which represent the first reference treatment of their subjects--address the diverse topics that form the backbone of the information revolution. Entries include essays on major corporations, computing machines, software, networking, computing concepts, research, laboratories, and pioneering individuals in computing history. In addition to these essays, each entry is also followed by a helpful list of further reading on that subject.
Contributors to the Encyclopedia represent a wide cross-section of accomplished scholars in the fields of computer science and scientific history. Their informative, accessible essays enable readers to learn about computer history in a non-intimidating way.
An invaluable addition to any library collection, the Encyclopedia of Computers and Computer History is an indispensable resource for undergraduates, graduate students, and anybody with an interest in, or question about, computers.

Book Description
Despite its wide availability and usage, few developers and DBAs have mastered the true power of Oracle SQL*Plus. This bestselling book--now updated for Oracle 10g--is the only in-depth guide to this interactive query tool for writing SQL scripts. It's an essential resource for any Oracle user. The new second edition of Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide clearly describes how to perform, step-by-step, all of the tasks that Oracle developers and DBAs want to perform with SQL*Plus--and maybe some you didn't realize you could perform. With Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide, you'll expertly:
- write and execute script files
- generate ad hoc reports
- extract data from the database
- query the data dictionary tables
- customize an SQL*Plus environment
- and much more
It also includes a handy quick reference to all of its syntax options and an often-requested chapter on SQL itself, along with a clear, concise, and complete introduction. This book is truly the definitive guide to SQL*Plus. It's an indispensable resource for those who are new to SQL*Plus, a task-oriented learning tool for those who are already using it, and an immediately useful quick reference for every user. If you want to leverage the full power and flexibility of this popular Oracle tool, you'll need this book.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference for SQL*Plus.......2007-08-29
This book covers the basics of using SQL*Plus for adhoc querying through using it for batch processing. An excellent, extremely readable reference.
Great book ofr those using the SQL Plus command line or GUI tool.......2006-09-20
Oracle SQL Plus: The Defnitive Guide
Jonthan Gennick
1-56592-578-5
This book is great for those using the SQL Plus tool. I use SQL Plus for Oracle 8 and 9. This book covers up to 8i but I have not had any trouble using the commands in 9i. I have not tried the commands listed on 10g yet. The book is easy to use since the topics are split into reasonable chapters and the font is large enough to read with the book beside the keyboard. I also like the chapters that list commonly used items in tables. One example would be the chapter listing the user_ and all_ views. The chapter covering the SET command is one I use frequently. This book is fairly specific to the usage of SQL Plus itself and does not delve too deeply into the inner workings of the Oracle database, but it does have examples in SQL query language and PL/SQL stored procedures. If one is looking for a book on SQL itself, I recommend another title. If one needs a book on SQL Plus, get this one.
the glories of the command line.......2005-01-19
The glories of the command line. SQLPlus [I am not going to write that irritating asterix] is an acknowledgment of the reality that for many large computer programs and operating systems, a command line utility is vital. The book explains this for the specific instance of hooking to Oracle's database. It is meant as a definitive reference. Showing every command, often accompanied by example code.
For an Oracle DBA, a good acquaintance with SQLPlus is probably mandatory. From the book, you can see how to quickly interrogate the database and get results in various useful paginated formats. Plus, and vitally, you can see how to build script files that can be run, where these files encode your experience in amassing customised sequences of commands specific to your needs. Exactly analogous to batch files in most operating systems, and just as useful.
Along those lines, SQLPlus is conceptually not that hard. When using Oracle, it is often far more important, and harder, to design optimal tables for a given problem.
great guide.......2005-01-15
I have found this book to be a really great guide that is easy to follow. The author provides a gentle, but thorough introduction to topics like creating reports, writing scripts, customization etc. He offers methodologies and alternatives beyond the syntax that you can find in the manual. For example, he presents and evaluates six ways one can achieve some kind of if-then-else flow control in SQL*Plus.
[...]
Great for a beginner.......2004-12-15
Well written, plenty of examples, very easy to read and follow. As someone who is new to SQL*Plus, I appreciated that. Once I got things installed and running, it was easy to get right into iSQL*Plus (running SQL commands through a browser interface) - really cool. The chapter on Create HTML Reports was very nice as well.
I found this book very helpful.

This complete and timely collection of approximately 10,000 terms and acronyms provides researchers, practitioners, educators, and students with the most accurate and up-to-date knowledge of keywords in the ever-expanding world of information science and technology. Terms and definitions included in this important reference publication were contributed by over 2,500 noted researchers from over 40 countries. The Dictionary of Information Science and Technology is a valuable, essential reference publication for libraries and individuals worldwide.

Microsoft Press Computer Dictionary defines terms and acronyms pertaining to all areas of computing, including hardware, networks, programming, applications, and databases. Unlike some dictionaries, it does not attempt to tackle companies, well-known commercial products, proprietary technologies (except some from Microsoft itself), and cyberculture. However, it does an excellent job of clarifying concepts and explaining abstruse technical terms in easy-to-understand language. This dictionary is a fine resource for either beginning or advanced computer users.

First Buy. Great Success........2007-01-29
The Fifth Edition of the Microsoft Computer Dictionary was a great addition to my personal library. I am new to personal computers and am very much in need O- level literature. Books like this one and other Microsoft publications are indeed a great boon to amateur scientists of my age.

Very helpful.......2004-05-05
I get a bit nervous at the idea that a company like Microsoft would get into the business of Computer Dictionaries out of concern for a conflict of interest - that perhaps words specific to competitors might be left out or altered. However, there is something compelling about the idea of a dictionary of computer related words written by people who are in the business of using those words, and I do find this edition to be fairly balanced.
Consider the entries on Netscape Navigator and Linux:
"Netscape Navigator n. The widely used family of Web browser programs, made by Netscape Corporation. Versions of Netscape Navigator are available for the Windows and Macintosh platforms, and for many varieties of UNIX. Netscape Navigator, which is based on NCSA's Mosaic Web Browser, was one of the first commercially available Web browsers. In 1999, Netscape Corporation was purchased by America Online."
"Linux n. A version of the UNIX System V Release 3.0 kernel developed for PCs with 80386 and higher -level microprocessors. Developed by Linus Torvalds (for whom it is named) along with numerous collaborators world-wide, Linux is distributed free, and its source code is open to modification by anyone who chooses to work on it, although some companies distribute it as part of a commercial package with Linux-compatible utilities. The Linux kernel works with the GNU utilities developed by the Free Software Foundation, which did not produce a kernel. It is used by some as an operating system for network servers and in the 1998/1999 timeframe began to gain increased visibility through support from vendors such as IBM and Compaq."
All in all, this dictionary is comprehensive and precise, and I highly recommend it.
GOOD, BUT NOT THE BEST VALUE.......2003-02-16
Yes, this edition of "Microsoft Computer Dictionary" has been revised and updated, when compared to the previous editions. Its 10,000 entries centered on software, hardware, and internet terms. They are easy to understand. But the fact that Microsoft stopped adding attached CD-ROMs (with this edition), without any significant price reduction is irritating. It depicts the company's insensitivity to the consumer needs.
However, this is not a bad dictionary to use, if you will tolerate this latest arrogance. It contains some new acronyms on XML, Xbox, tablet PCs, and wireless network. But, be aware that there are other computer dictionaries in the market, which offer much more for less money: including attached CD-ROMs.
Microsoft Computer Dictionary , Fifth Edition by MICROSOFT P.......2002-05-26
I personally think that as far as Computer Dictionaries go this is an excellent one , but I must WARN YOU.... If you looking for the accompanying CD that came with all the past versions , YOUR OUT OF LUCK.... I think portability is a big factor and having the book on CD in the field is much easier than lugging the desktop book around.. EITHER "MICROSOFT" PRESS IS GETTING REALLY CHEAP OR BILL IS GETTING PARANOID OVER ALL THE LAWSUITS AND DECIDED TO SAVE SOME MONEY , I DON'T KNOW.. I DO KNOW THAT I GIVE THIS BOOK THREE STARS BECAUSE OF THIS , OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT A HIGHER RATING... So be AWARE of this.......

Book Description
The SAP R/3 system has become the leading business information standard system worldwide. It has its own development environment based on the 4GL language ABAP/4. The ABAP/4 workbench presented in this book is built on the enterprise-wide data model of R/3 and contains all the tools needed for effective development of large program systems in distributed teams. To develop the R/3 modules, even SAP makes exclusive use of the ABAP/4 workbench. The book explains how to apply the development environment for R/3 users and advisors to extend and adapt the system to their special needs. It does so using numerous reusable examples in ABAP/4. The text focuses especially on how to solve interface problems and on the integration of desktop PCs into R/3. Source code for all examples is included on the accompanying diskette.
Customer Reviews:
Would not recommend it!.......2004-06-11
I agree with the reviewer from Wyoming. This book is poorly written (at least it is in englist). The code examples have errors and typos in them that leave you debugging the code examples to try to figure out the what point the writer was trying to make. The German version may be good, but I would not recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn SAP.
A thin (!) ABAP book !.......2001-06-26
The usual ABAP book is about 850 pages long. This one is a meagre 320 or so. This book is very good. It packs a lot of information into its 320 pages, whereas the other ABAP books get off on tangents, or add lots of stuff you really don't need.
I did not really understand this book until I read Ken Greenwood's "ABAP in 21 Days" - which I would highly recommend. But after Greenwood, this book is a "walk in the park", and is really detailed and clear (despite a few minor translation issues).
a tough read.......2000-10-23
at times the book seems as if it was taken directly from a german to english translator program and published. there are sections that are nearly impossible to read without a couple of passes. i had hoped to use this as a text for abap training, but it is somewhat confusing to follow, and offers very little detail beyond what can be taken from abap on-line help. there are bright points, such as some of the dialog programming discussion, but overall, i think there are better development books available.
A good book for overview picture of abap programming.......2000-06-11
This book give you a whole picture for software development of abap programming. For detail, online help should be consulted.

Book Description
The new science of computational lexicology and lexicography has arisen through contact and collaboration between representatives of three previously distinct disciplines: lexicography, linguistics, and computer science. In this volume distinguished scholars provide a broad perspective on the
field. In their overview paper Sue Atkins, Beth Levin, and Antonio Zampolli trace the development of computational lexicography and its links to theoretical linguistics. The sections which follow discuss the collection and pre-processing of textual data, the theoretical infrastructure of lexical
analysis, and current tools and methodologies.

Customer Reviews:
A wealth of information.......2007-08-03
As a medical student I do not just try to learn about the disciplines of the field in which I am studying, but also other areas I am less likely to get educated in unless I am in that field. I enjoy this book and read it as a book because it has a wealth of information in it to learn from.
The coverage in the fields of Hardware terms, electronics theory and IT fundamentals was much more interesting to me than I thought it would be, with several detailed diagrams and explanations that did not leave me feeling I had missed something. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to further their education in the terms and technology that help drive todays world.
handy book.......2007-08-01
I bought one copy of this book for myself and one for my Mom. We both like it and think that it will be a handy book to have around.
A Changing World.......2006-11-10
This is an good source for terms, though the Internet and the computer world is changing every day. Some words just can't be found in the book, you have to go online.
Internet Computer Language Dictionary.......2005-08-12
A very concise, well-written dictionary of computer terms, language defintions, internet definitions, standards, computer interface devices, connectivity, etc. Terms are easy to find and the definitions are exact and to the point. There are even references to web sites where appropriate to further identify a term. The description of connectors is particularly helpful.
Useless.......2005-05-13
I can't count the number of computer terms and abbreviations I've looked for in this book -- looked for in vain, that is. The one that inspired me to go online and complain publicly was ICC. There is no ICC (International Color Consortium) reference! Unbelievable that this basic abbreviation has been left out of a dictionary of computer and internet terms. Save your money and use online resources for definitions and explanations.

Does not define vocabulary words, it only translates them........1998-01-16
The book translates a word with another word, but does not explain what that word is used for. ie. printer = impressora
Usually a dictionary will give a brief definition of the word you are looking up.
Book Description
An extended reference guide and glossary covering not only all UNIX commands but 3,000 actual examples for those commandsâone for each variation. Features a unique organization with a built-in keyword dictionary, a cross-reference section for every command and other useful information.
Customer Reviews:
Higher Level Computing.......2003-02-20
This book is great when working with various platforms like I do in Customer Support. The only problem is they have to update it from 1994 to include more and/or less terms and their definitions. Otherwise most of the terminology is good, accurate and concise when one is trying to work with scripting or just using the commands in the book. Otherwise, an excellent book. I hope they come up eventually with an update on it.
Great UNIX reference.......2000-03-06
If you want to do something in UNIX this book has the command. It won't hold your hand and teach you unix step by step, but it is an excellent reference. The book lists zillions of commands - from common to obscure - and clearly explains what they do (in different flavors even). Anyone working with UNIX should have a copy.
My most valuable and most used UNIX book, five years running.......1999-10-23
This is my most valuable UNIX book. The real-life examples, both stand-alone commands and piped-together commands always come though when I don't remember exactly how to do something. The keyword index is grouped by functional categories, so, if you know that you want to do "job control" and not a "printing" command, then you are 80% of the way to finding the command that you want in the index. The authors did the work, so I don't have to. What a great, great book for anyone dealing with UNIX.
Better then ANY UNIX book out there!!!!!.......1999-09-28
I have had quite a few Unix Command books. THere is none that I use more than this book. There are more than enough examples and references to answer quite a few questions.
A Book to own!.......1999-09-18
I have had this book for a while, and have found many uses for it. I've learned about UNIX from it, but even more-so, have used it to find out what commands are. It's great for newbies and experienced UNIX users. Great reference... does not pretend to be anything other than it is.
