5 out of 5 stars Take your time.......2007-09-10

One chapter at a time. I recommend that you read the quizes then the chapter to find key points easier. Great study material! Sybex is always the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-07-12

The book is quite informative and up-to-date. It covers all new A+ examination areas (really comprehensive). The bundled stuffs are very helpful too. It comes with lots of practice exams. The electronic flashcards are handy and refreshing. With the bundled compact disc, you can read your book anywhere, anytime with any portable device that support .pdf file format. Good book.

4 out of 5 stars Thank God..........2007-06-24

Finally an A+ book that doesn't drown itself in tech terms without actually explaining what it is they are trying to convey. This is as user-friendly as one could hope to get in a study guide. It doesn't go over one's head, if it the subject matter does the author brings it down to earth.

The companion CD is pretty good as well, offering the whole book in .pdf form for downloading on one's iPod or PDA.

4 out of 5 stars A+ Complete Study Guide - Sybex.......2007-05-17

To begin the book is well organized and well written. The flow of the book is easy to understand, and easy to take notes from. The CD-Rom includes an electronic copy of the book (which in my opinion is something that all paper copies should come with these days) which is very helpful for working professionals whom commute.

Cons: Unfortunately the book will miss a thing here or there as it relates directly to the exam itself. As an example: You will find that the study questions, while good at reinforcing the material you just read, do not line up with the flow, format or difficulty of the actual exam questions. They are really there to cement what you've just read and reinforce that to you.

Another example is the Professionalism and Communications section does not go over enough material in detail. It rather uses broad terms and concepts to go over that particular domain.

Conclusion: I feel this is a very good primary study guide. I would recommend however that you use supliments to your studying such as Transcender exams to help prep you for the actual testing enviornment as well as the Exam Cram book to compliment and really drive home the material.

The book is definately worth the purchase and you will be 75%-80% read to take the exam after completetion of studying.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent exam preparation.......2007-05-14

This book does cover A+ exam objectives, moreover the chapters are arranged well according to the objective which made me feel easier to find the topic of interest or the topic that i need to study further.

With the chapters arranged and written according to compTIA objectives, I found it easier to review what I should study more after I take the test, since the test result will give you explanation in which area you need to review.

As I was an experience technician, I did feel it easy to follow and understand this book and pass the exam just by using this book, but i think this book lacks in the troubleshooting area. The author does give you quite a lot of troubleshooting example from his experience, but ff the author can give a lot more real world example of problems and solutions, i think this book will be perfect for exam preparation as well as on the job reference.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book........2005-11-11

"I have to say that I really do think this A+ book is very well written and easy to follow. The hands on exercises are definitely a plus and should be incorporated into all texts. My current text, while adequate, doesn't provide near the exercises that this text does."
David E. Cooke
Heart of Georgia Technical College

"(Schmidt) includes many of the labs students will complete, eliminating the need for an additional lab text. There are enough questions at the end of the chapter to allow me to choose those that I want emphasize when I cannot cover all material in the classroom."
John Washington
Texas State Technical College

"I really like the review questions and student exercises at the ends of the chapters. I take many of my exam questions from them. They are superior to those found in other texts I have used in the past.
The Complete A+ Guide to PC Repair 2005 Edition is an excellent A+ prep book. Even after almost 15 years of experience troubleshooting and repairing computers, I still keep a copy handy for reference. If a student (or anyone preparing for the A+ test) buys only one textbook, this should be it!"
K.C. Moore
Tidewater Community College

"The layout is excellent. The labs are incorporated into the book instead of requiring students to buy a separate book for labs only. It is a great concept that I'd like to see from more authors."
Zoltan Szabo
Richland College

Thank you for the teacher's material on the Complete Computer Repair 2nd ed. Textbook. This material has made teaching this material from your book the most helpful of any material I have ever used. I have been teaching for 20 years, and this is the most complete and user friendly information I have used. Again thank you and keep up the good work. Loren Niemeyer, Sauk Valley Community College

I am very impressed
We have already adopted Schmidt's 2nd edition for use with my class at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, MA, and I am very impressed with it. I like the updated information and the addition of some review questions in Chp 6 on Troubleshooting. The end of the chapter exercises make preparing classroom activities much easier.

What a joy to have found this book.
I own every book, it seems, on computer repair. At last, I have found a book that is well written and easy to understand. Ms. Schmidt's explanations are straight forward and well illustrated. What a joy to have found this book.

Great book! this book will enable me to better instruct my students because the labs/exercises will save me many hours fine tuning labs that I have prepared. Other instructors in the same boat know how very difficult and time consuming it is to prepare and test lab exercises, and, be successful in ensuring that labs provide a positive learning experience. The chapter reviews and tests are reinforcement and well written and cover all important topics. I feel overwhelmed knowing that, finally, I will have such an excellent instructional computer book for my students. Please share my thoughts and thanks to Cheryl A. Schmidt. There is not to much to say because the text explains it all. For those of you who have taken a class that requires this book you know what I'm talking about. Not only have I had the pleasure of owning this valuble textbook, I have also had the privilege of being a former student of Cheryl Schmidt's here at FCCJ in Jacksonville, FL.

Ms. Schmidt is one of the finest instructors I've ever had the honor of learning from. The one theme that runs through out her textbook as well as her classes is, DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION, ......ALWAYS READ THE DOCUMENTATION.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST A+ books around hands down.......2002-09-17

I have spent several months of hard studying and in-home lab exercises in preparation for taking the A+ exam and this book is one I use every day. One of the best things about it is that it is peppered with actual lab exercises. This makes sense since this book is actually meant to be a textbook for college classes (I just wish it were also available in hardcover). At the end of each chapter are pages and pages of exercises to do to actually practice what you've learned. For those who don't have the money or space to set up an old guinea pig computer there are paper exercises that will get your brain matter really working. Don't dismiss the paper exercises even if you do have a guinea pig computer. A lot of them are not easy and duplicate some of the problems a repair tech will encounter on the job.

Which brings me to yet another aspect of this book I really liked. It has added emphasis on troubleshooting. I have a lot of A+ books - all the standard ones most people find in bookstores and none of them focus on troubleshooting to the degree this one does. Again it makes sense since this book is supposed to be a textbook for courses that help people get a job as a PC repair tech. People bring in their computers because something isn't working correctly, right? So troubleshooting becomes an essential skill. I recognized a lot of the troubleshooting techniques I use on my job and several new ones I didn't.

Hardware and Operating Systems are given in-depth coverage. Probably far more than you would ever be tested on. For the OS portion of the test everything from DOS/Win 3.1, Win95, Win98/ME, NT, 2000/XP is examined. Even things that A+ doesn't really focus on anymore are given good coverage. Mainly because on the job you'll likely face situations where it's good to know for troubleshooting older systems.

The one thing that this book doesn't have that most other A+ books do is a cd with practice test questions. However, there a plenty of websites available that let you take practice exams (or you could just buy practice exam software separately). The other downside is that since it is a college textbook the answers to the questions are not given (they're probably in the instructor's version of this book).

In a market full of A+ books studying any one of them thoroughly will be enough to pass. But if you want something that will help you on a job too - well, you can't go wrong with this one.

I really like the book. I have the 8th and 9th editions and feel the book is very informative for beginners and for the experienced PC techs. There are thing that I sometimes forget and I use the book to research things. I also use it when I have trouble with my home PC that I built. I don't think I would have gotten as far into computers if I had not had this book to assist me in my education

Minasi has created a book that spans the development of PC technology. Without a foundation in the history of computer technology, current hardware and software issues would have no meaning.I found the book easy to read, easy to understand and more importantly easy to use as a reference book for computer problems. As computer technology is developing and changing at a rapid rate, books on the subject will be out of date by the time they leave the publishers. This book will endure for several years as an excellent source of computer related information.

3 out of 5 stars Better Books Out There.......2005-04-29

I used this book when I took a beginning computer repair course at a local community college. The graphics were in black & white and were just artist renditions rather than actual color photos.

The author seemed to prefer "describing" the parts of the computer and repair procedures instead of "showing" the reader what to do and what the parts really look like.

There are better books on computer repair out there, and I didn't find this book that useful, so I recommend skipping this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Hardware Book.......2003-01-07

Some of the best advice I've ever had about computer books came from a pair of friends who happened to be married to each other. The husband told me, "If you're looking for a reference manual, always buy the smallest one on the market so that you'll carry it around with you." The wife said "Always buy the biggest, fattest book on the market because it has all the answers." In this case, the wife happened to be right- -with its 1400 pages and 2 CDs, this book is certainly the biggest, fattest PC hardware book that I've seen on the market. It also contains the clearest writing and most useful information that I've seen for books of its type. This book will tell you how to upgrade your hard drive, choose a new video card, protect your computer from lightning strikes, and a lot of other important facts besides. But it's too big and bulky to make it easy to carry around.

The book is written at a level that just about anyone can understand. If you are comfortable plugging in the wires in the back of your computer and you can tell one end of a screwdriver from another, you should be able to tackle just about any hardware installation or upgrade job using this book. It's not just for beginners, however; even experienced technicians will find useful information in the book. The book is not written specifically for the A+ Certification exams, but it covers the core hardware concepts for the exams. A lab manual is also available for the book. The lab manual contains study questions as well as detailed instructions for common tasks.

Almost every chapter of the book starts with a "QuickSteps" section that summarizes what you need to do to complete common hardware tasks. The remainder of the chapter explains how the piece of hardware works, a little about its history, and provides more detailed installation information. The first of the 2 accompanying CD-ROMs contains video clips that demonstrate some common tasks. The other CD-ROM contains some useful utility programs and some A+ review materials (in a very clunky interface- -not very well done compared to others on the market) as well as some additional chapters and appendices. I had trouble running the video clips in the DVD-CD drive of my new IBM laptop running Windows 2000. However, they seem to run fine in the CD drive of my old IBM laptop.

I bought this book expecting to find some useful information about how to upgrade my PII. It barely acknowledges that PII'S exist. My advice is if you want a good book that covers all the bases thoroughly buy Scott Mueller's UPGRADING AND REPAIRING PCs

3 out of 5 stars Not So Fast.......2002-05-31

I read all of the glowing reports about this book so I bought it. I'm actually not very satisfied. I'm not a novice, but I don't consider myself an expert either. In any case, I do need good reference tools. After 12 editions I was surprised to find so much missing information. Although the info on hard drives was very good, there wasn't one word about SMART technology. The chart of processors was also missing 3 Pentium models. There were many instances like this.

In addition, there were technical errors such as suggesting that an ohmmeter is used to test power. Do that with an ohmmeter, and if it's not fused you can kiss your meter goodbye. An ohmmeter is used to test for resistance, and that's it. It may sound like a small thing, but I lose confidence in the material when there's such a gross error with a basic piece of test equipment.

I think it's pointless for me to pick on the book/author with everything that I found, but I felt that I had to point out that there are some serious errors and omissions. I had a much higher opinion of the Scott Mueller and Stephen Bigelow books.

5 out of 5 stars The most authoritative book I've ever owned or read.......2002-03-23

I've taken several technical support certification courses, and this was the textbook I used in half of them. Mark Minasi is an excellent writer who is able to "dumb down" all the minute details and translates very well the technical jargon of the trade. Minasi is also the writer of several Windows 2000 books which I've also read, and I've taken a fondness for his ability to start really big and progress quickly into smaller details without ever losing my interest or attention.

The chapters on hardware installation and introduction to networks are the best written and most authoritative material I've used to learn the subtle aspects of TCP/IP, ethernet, and token/bus ring topologies. Also, the chapters on computer upgrading and "building a dream computer from scratch" are well laid-out and detailed for avid geeks like me who like to destroy and build machines from scrap piles. I guess the best thing to say about this book is that it fostered an even deeper interest in computers than I had before reading.

One of the best perks of this book is that there is a moderate balance of graphics, charts and diagrams to go with his text. There is hardly anything intimidating about his presentation; novice and intermediate learners will have no problem getting to grasp every topic in this book. The twelfth edition also makes several revisions, particularly with misstated bandwidth numbers for Firewire and USB in the last edition). I haven't had a chance to test out the CDROMs, but several of my peers have recommended the video installation procedures, where Minasi goes over all the basics (like how to ground yourself properly, installing master/slave IDE devices, setting up SCSI cards, etc.)

I don't like giving heavily-biased support for any book, product or service, but in all honesty, this is by far the best and most authoritative source I've ever used to fix any hardware-related issue with a computer. There is no topic I can think of that doesn't get covered, and he throws in a little history and conceptual technology as well to spur more interest in the future technology.

In conclusion, the book is well worth the price, and I highly doubt most beginning and intermediate-level IT people will ever need to go beyond this edition as a reference source.

3 out of 5 stars As networking introduction.......2000-09-26

Excellent coverage of all aspect of networking but lots of error especially in the tcp/ip subnetting section. This book made a great introduction to the world of networking.

5 out of 5 stars Global coverage.......2000-03-10

The book covers about every networking related topic with enough theoretical and practicle depth to really understand what's going on.

Some topics described are a little outdated but before a person can understand what's going on with today standards it should understand previous technologies.

It's the only book i know that covers about every protocol used for the various OSI layers (from application standard to the cabling part) without getting too technical on the bit's and bytes level.

I don't really understand why they choose the title "The Complete Network Upgrade & Maintenance Guide" since the book is more a global networking tutorial.

A good, huge book i recommend to everybody that wants to learn about all concepts used with LAN/WAN (inter)networking.

Take Chris Brenton's "Multiprotocol Network Design and Troubleshooting" book, add some information on Token Ring, AppleShare, Banyan, LANtastic as well as a number of other dead technologies, slap Mark Minasi's name on the cover and increase the price by $15 and what do you get? "The Complete Network Upgrade & Maintenance Guide". I kid you not, I compared these two books page by page and the text on all of the current technologies is identical word for word. Sybex burned me on this book but never again. It makes me wonder if all the current Minasi books are thrown together the same way.

Ordered this new edition because of my experience with earlier ones.

This edition lacks the CD which the other edition contained.

The format of this edition is not done as well as the previous one.

I am dissapointed in it's new format and lack of CD.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-11-05

I am not a very technically savvy guy with a computer. I was looking for a book to explain to me how I can upgrade my computer and keep it in fairly good maintenance. I saw this one and it seemed to have a good description. It turns out this book is massive, but most of it is devoted to computer peripherals. I was not impressed because it is not a very user friendly book and didn't have more of what it was titled to be. It would be an excellent book for someone that has a lot of time and already should know most of this stuff and what's to change their peripherals mostly.

3 out of 5 stars Many errors - disappointing.......2006-08-28

Minasi's earlier editions were good (and hardcover - what happened to that?). This one was apparently rushed out without any proofreading just to keep up with the Joneses (Mueller). There are so many errors in the first two chapters, it's unbelievable... Maybe the rest of the book actually got re-written and proofed, but the first part is very disappointing and makes me unlikely to grab this volume when I need an accurate answer.

E.G.
p.17 figure 1.5 shows connectors on back of PC, points to a Centronics 36 connector, labeling it a 25-pin parallel port. Same figure labels a DB-25 port (male? female?) as "External SCSI". (Could be, if a VERY old scsi card is in there... )

p.17 "... be the expert on how many millions of polygons a particular sound card can render per second." Huh?? Since when did sound cards start rendering geometric shapes?

p.22 "Quick Steps: Installing a CPU" gives 6 steps. No mention of heatsinks/fans. Just pop it in, button up the case, and get the marshmallows ready!

5 out of 5 stars The Complete PC Upgrade and maitenance Guide.......2005-09-26

Who want to work in computer repair then need this book.

4 out of 5 stars clear instructions .......2005-09-11

Sybex and the authors have updated this long running and successful text with the 16th edition. The rapid changes in personal computer hardware mean that you might want to consider getting this book for its comprehensive advice of a wide range of hardware items.

I should say that even with the changes in this industry, if you have the 14th or 15th editions, you may well want to stick with those. Not everything changes between consecutive editions, and those still hold considerable relevance.

The book's remit extends across a broad range of hardware. Not just items that might be directly plugged into your computer. For example, there is discussion about routers for your local network. Where these might be wired or wireless devices.

Typically, across all the hardware they describe, there is enough information to be able to install that hardware, even without the manufacturers' instructions. Sometimes, the book's instructions may even be clearer!

The A+ Complete Study Guide, Second Edition is interesting, mainly because it is neither fish nor fowl--it tries to prepare the reader for life in the field, yet ignores some critical new technologies that are pretty much required knowledge. It readies you for the A+ exams, yet entirely skips some of the lesser-tested sections. But in the end, the book becomes a fish with wings, because in spite of these drawbacks, it's engagingly written and astoundingly comprehensive when it counts.

First, the good news: the folks who wrote this book know what they're talking about, and can write rings around most of the other certification writers. Many certification books are written as if you're a Thanksgiving turkey waiting to be stuffed with a miscellany of acronyms and computer facts, whereas the A+ Complete Study Guide actually takes the time to explain things from a repairperson's perspective, giving tips and hints along the way. The book is peppered with real-life examples, reminders of good practices, and history that will help you to understand why things are the way they are today. (They often don't make much sense anymore, but there was a reason for that way back then.) If you're looking for a friendly teacher, this will do nicely.

The end of each chapter is punctuated with a summary and 20 multiple-choice questions, all of which are pretty close to what you'll find on the exam. The explanations given for the answers are terse and don't necessarily tell you why the other answers are wrong, but they suffice.

The book takes some shortcuts along the way, however, and has some odd focuses. The idea is to prepare you for what you'll find in the field, and it frankly admits that practically no one is going to work with DOS commands or 80286 processors anymore. As such, it barely mentions DOS at all, giving a brief list of commands and some quick takes on memory management, and gives Windows 3.1 only a side note, not even bothering to provide pictures. However, there is a staggeringly large section on Windows 95/98 installation. Admittedly, DOS and Windows 3.1 questions are very few and far between on the most recent round of A+ exams, but all it takes is two or three surprise questions to shoot a big hole through your score. Fortunately, the section on the more recent (and more often tested) Windows 95 section is very thorough and should prepare you without a hitch.

Unfortunately, although the field preparation is a good idea, it leaves off mentioning some major technologies. The A+ Complete Study Guide barely mentions that it is possible to burn a CD-ROM in your own home, and doesn't even touch on video accelerators. Although it's tough to keep up with the ever-changing world of hardware, it would have been nice to have some newer technology.

Still, in the end this book means well, and it will serve you in your quest for an A+ certification, as it has for thousands of others. If you can overlook some minor flaws that (probably) won't get in the way of your passing, this book comes highly recommended. --William Steinmetz

5 out of 5 stars A+ Exam Study Guide.......2007-07-17

I passed my 300 series A+ exam the first time after studying this book and the practice exams. Not that the 300 series has been retired, but that I passed my exam on June 29, 2007; the day before the 300 series exams were to retire!
Sybex is the best guide to use to prepare for other certification exams.

Thanks so much!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide.......2007-01-09

"Really, I think that this book is the best source of information to prepare yourself well for A+ Certification Exam. This book isn't only valuable to A+ Certification candidates but also to anyone who is interesting in information technology area. Don't miss this chance & buy it!"

4 out of 5 stars Sybex Rocks.......2006-01-30

Sybex rocks, Mike Myers is also very well written but they don't have the entire book in pdf format or any format for that matter. That makes studying easier. Now all they are missing is to get off their Bill Gates paranoia and let you print from the pdf. Overall it's a great study guide. Five stars would mean I could print the pdf.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2005-10-24

This book has a lot of really useful information. I highly recommend it if you know nothing of computers. I know a lot of computers, being a computer technician, but this book talks about stuff I would have never figured out.

3 out of 5 stars Cut out the fluff, and beef up the O/S Technologies.......2005-08-29

I passed both exams relying solely on this book. However, I nearly tanked on the O/S test b/c the book just barely covers Windows XP, which accounts for 60% of the O/S exam (directly or indirectly). And, like someone else pointed out, I would have certainly failed had I not had 5+ years in IT behind me. If you are inexperienced or not sure about yourself, don't rely on this book due to the complex nature of Windows XP. You'll do fine with the hardware, although there is a lot of fluff that would waste your time. For the O/S part though, Windows XP *should* have had its own section in the book with a detailed discussion. Since, this book failed to do it, not to mention the many typos and logical errors of a critical nature, the only recourse for the unfortunate Comptia A+ candidate is to dole out some additional cash for a book dedicated to Windows XP.
Not to be completely bitter about my experience though, I aced the hardware section with this book. And, that's saying a lot for a guy who only did software up to this point. That's my 2c on it.

5 out of 5 stars All You Need To Know And More........2006-08-09

Having been recommended by a Tutor on a recent course in the States, I bit the bullet and ordered myself a copy. This book gives all that it promises. The well written text treats you like an Adult whilst not forgetting that we are not all fully A+ Certified. It has already gotten me out of a few jams and I would fully recommend it to anyone else. For anyone from the UK reading this review, the language does not need an American Dictionary to read so it's great for both sides of the Pond.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for a student..........2006-02-26

I bought this book to use in my Computer Hardware class in college. It helped to elevate my knowledge of computers and I found it to be a useful tool for reference. This book is a good place to start if wanting to learn about computer hardware.

3 out of 5 stars Dave in Kazoo.......2005-09-16

The book would be good for someone new to computer repair. I bought it to keep current on new technology. There was little new in it.

3 out of 5 stars Indexing is weak.......2004-04-07

I have purchased copies of the book for the past 6 or seven years. Mark Minasi is the computer guru! His capacity to take technical questions of intimidating proportions and reduce them to a level us peons can understand well enough to get the job done. Brilliant people in my life have always had that ability to take an abstract piece of information ( something like the origin of the solar system) an distill it into language the rest of the world can understand. Mark Minasi does this year in and year out with the latest PC's and there components. After reading and listening to him over the years I've come to feel reasonably well versed in upgrading our home computers, here in Dryden New York. No small feat when you consider that I am an art teacher by profession.
However in your latest release of Mark's work I noticed that the indexing is less than half the size of the previous year's version. Sadly it is not nearly as thorough. This may sound like a miner point but for some of us readers it will prove to be a critical one. I past years whenever I had a problem I would run across an unfamiliar term or network protocol, you could look it up in the index and follow the solution to your problem through to completion. As I see it the value of the entire book is to guide you through a problem you've run into on your own, as well as making for fun reading of course. The weak index creats a broud obstruction at the very center of the process of self education which is what Mark has taught flawlessly for years.
While Minasi work still remains flawless, getting to his answeres will be hindered buy a poor indexing job. By way of qualification, perhaps this type of indexing would be fine in other books. We just got spoiled with having the best of everything in past 13 editions. I want to repeat the mark Minasi has lost none of his accuracy or wit. The quality remains. Its just the indexing that limits the overall effectiveness of getting to the write answere when you need it . Fred C Wendell

4 out of 5 stars Making it easier to become a technician........2004-03-30

One of the first books I ever read in the computer industry was Mark Minasi's Upgrade & Maintenance guide 8th edition. From there I was hooked and a fan ever since. Minasi's style is one that makes the reader comfortable with the material without over stating. Minasi dos not over complicate that material so every level of knowledge and skill would be able to comprehend the text.

The book is also well suited for several certification exams such ad CST or A+; and the material is technically accurate and up to date. The book covers all hardware topics from the hard drive to add-on cards to networking and everything in between.

What the author has done for you is break down the topics and detailed information that allows you to grasp the concept(s). What I think is missing is a lab manual to go along with the material to make is easier to study from.

If you are looking to break into the technical arena, study for the A+ exam or looking to enhance the knowledge base you have, then this book may be one to get a hold of. Overall Mark Minasi is a respected and trusted author and this release is certain proof of that.

Book Description

The Complete Computer Repair Textbook is written so that it is easy to read and understand, whether the student is a novice to computers or has some knowledge, because the concepts are presented in building-block fashion. The book centres on hardware, but Appendix A covers the basic DOS skills and Appendix B covers basic Windows 95 skills that are needed for some of the exercises. It includes coverage of difficult subjects in a step-by-step manner, and uses good graphics to illustrate concepts. Reinforcement questions, end of each chapter hands-on exercises, and practice certification review questions (including Novell's CNA, Certified Novell Administrator, and Microsoft's MCP, Microsoft Certified Professional), reinforce the concepts described in the body of the text.

Speaking of the A+ cert text: I actually purchased it for my own use as I was cramming for the A+ cert myself and I only have one thing to say: wow! If you need any blurbs for this text, just say the word and I will say wonderful things about it to anyone who'll listen- Any prospective A+ student should certainly have a solid foundation in the various hardware/software principles in addition to this text, but for the brute memorization and getting acclimated to the testing atmosphere, this is THE text- I just finished passing both halves of the certification and this text was a large part of it; sooooo since the college has asked me to teach certification in the spring, I'll be using the Schmidt tome in addition to the usual "overview" type text.

One of the BEST A+ books around hands down
I have spent several months of hard studying and in-home lab exercises in preparation for taking the A+ exam and this book is one I use every day.
I have a lot of A+ books-all the standard ones most people find in bookstores and none of them focus on troubleshooting to the degree this one does.
Mainly, because on the job you'll likely face situations where it's good to know for troubleshooting older systems.
In a market full of A+ books studying any one of them thoroughly will be enough to pass. But if you want something that will help you on a job too-well, you can't go wrong with this one.

If you have a catalog of other books, please send it.

At last, I have found a book that is well ritten and easy to understand. Ms. Schmidt's explanations are straightforward and well illustrated. What a joy to have found this book.

Great book! This book will enable me to better instruct my students because the labs/exercises will save me many hours fine tuning labs that I have prepared. Other instructors in the same boat know how very difficult and time-consuming it is to prepare and test lab exercises, and, be successful in ensuring that labs provide a positive learning experience. The chapter reviews and tests are reinforcement and well written and cover all important topics. I feel overwhelmed knowing that, finally, I will have such an excellent instructional computer book for my students. Please share my thoughts and thanks to Cheryl A. Schmidt.

The Best Technician's Handbook
There is not too much to say because the text explains it all. For those of you who have taken a class that requires this book, you know what I'm talking about. Not only have I had the pleasure of owning this valuable textbook, I have also had the privilege of being a former student of Cheryl Schmidt's here at FCCJ in Jacksonville, FL.
Ms. Schmidt is one of the finest instructors I've ever had the honor of learning from. The one theme that runs throughout her textbook as well as her classes is, DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION, ......ALWAYS READ THE DOCUMENTATION.
Thank you Cheryl!
