3 out of 5 stars CCNP BCMSN Official Exam Certification Guide .......2007-09-24

Haven't finished the book yet, but so far not that great. The writting does not keep your attention, but maybe it will get better. Have only gone through 2 chapters so far.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better........2007-09-21

This was the only source I used for the exam. While it did a pretty good job at covering everything, I did notice questions on the exam that I know for a fact were not covered in the book. I'm not sure if those questions counted toward my score, but I do believe I answered them correctly anyhow. The CD that came with the book was a waste of time. The quiz chapters were out of order and had some content that wasn't even in the book (Multicasting amongst other things.) I am hoping for better quality out of the BCSI book I'm about to read.

4 out of 5 stars May not be enough to pass the BCMSN Exam.......2007-09-17

A good text, overall, but a test taker of the new BCMSN exam may need additional resources to pass this exam. I took and passed the exam after extensive study, and found 10-12 wireless questions on the examination in addition to the switching topics.

3 out of 5 stars Agree with R. Bunal.......2007-06-05

I agree with the review by R. Bunal. I took 13 certification exams in the past (Cisco and Microsoft) using only 1 book each (Exam Cram when available) and passed first time every time. Never had any problems.
But this book does not match this test. The questions in the book are simple and one dimensional compared to the exam. The exam questions are very multi dimensional. The book also totally skips things brought up on the exam - not even touched on. And the book drones on a lot about stuff not on the test. The test also uses different terminology than this book. I do recommend that you find other resources than this book alone.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book if you know about WLANS.......2007-06-02

I studied using this book for only 3 months and I scored 825 on the exam. Great book if you already know a bit about WLANS. The wireless section doesn't give enough details about the Cisco's Unified Wireless Network and the practice questions are not a challenge.

4 out of 5 stars Mama, that's a Spicy QoS Book .......2007-07-11

Queues baby. That's what it's all about. First of all, consider the VoIP scene. You ain't getting no guaranteed action over that converged network unless you're doing some low latency queuing (with is class based weighted fair queuing + a priority queue) and probably some compression on that real time protocol (RTP) header. Then there's the fact that VoIP has to interact with the plain old telephone service (POTS) and the gateways, gatekeepers, FXO, FXS, earth and magneto trunks, all that needs to be adapting the packets to the analog signal domains. No way you're getting by without it.

And then there's the per-hop DiffServ with its many and varied ways of prioritizing. Software queues, hardware FIFOs. Shaping and policing, dropping and buffering, ingress and egress, oy it makes my head hurt. But you need to be aware of the tools. Alternatively, signal the whole thing with IntServ (RSVP) but don't expect it to scale as well. The whole question of policy at the edge comes up again here, and while the conventional wisdom is don't be breaking open packets in the core, the bottom line is that you don't always want to send a guaranteed service into a cloud and hope for the best on the other side.

QoS knobs have been so many and varied over the years that it's good there are finally some macro-based to set them up with templates. The modular QoS CLI and AutoQoS are two hopeful examples of simplifying the IT workday, and the Security and Device Manager (SDM) GUI is another nice try. Of course, a little tuning after the wizards have painted with their broad brush tends to help you get things right.

And let's not make too many assumptions about wires. Who doesn't have a laptop nowadays? And the wonderful things about standards is that there are so many of them, and that's just counting the ones that begin with 802.11. Encryption, authentication, authorization, rogue access points....you can bet that security is the killer app for wireless.

And by the way, this book maps pretty nicely to the test, and if you understand it you have a very good shot at passing that bad boy.

3 out of 5 stars Not as ful-filling as I'd hoped.......2007-07-18

I bought the video mentor hoping it would help get me back on track with my CCNP studies. I've been studying off and on for over a year on my CCNP while actively doing in-depth networking during my day job.

First the negatives: there isn't much meat to this study guide. 5 hours for $50+ just doesn't cover it. I paid about half that through my Cisco Press discount and I still feel cheated. The CCNP is so much more detailed than what 5 hours can possibly cover. I've seen CCNA video study guides that 40 hours or more in length. 5 hours to cover a single test really isn't enough in my opinion. I've taken the BSCI twice and didn't pass it either time. The first was due to lack of studying all the relevant IGPs (I never imagines that a full 1/3 of the test would be nothing but EIGRP! I'm much more of an expert IS-IS, BGP and OSPF by far so I bombed the EIGRP portion quite thoroughly). The second failure was due to lack of study time in the weeks leading up to my scheduled retake. Having seen the test twice I can say with absolute certainty that the material covered in Lab 1, which was little more than basic EIGRP, wouldn't be enough answer the EIGRP questions correctly.

That brings me to my second gripe. The test material that was covered is more on par with entry-level CCNA material than CCNP material. Sure the MQC labs touched on some more advanced material like the LFI lab but the overwhelming majority of the material is the basic fundamentals at most. I feel in no way prepared to go back and take the new CCNP courses based on these videos. Either the material is way too basic or I'm really good, much more so than I think I am. This DVD is more like an Intro to the video mentor that mistakenly took on some of the more CCNA topics.

My last gripe is on the use of the SDM in a couple of the labs. I haven't taken any of the new CCNP tests since they revised them this past winter. However I seriously doubt if they use the SDM for any of it. I really didn't get anything out of the SDM sections which covered configuring an IPSec L2L tunnel as well as going through the basic router hardening processes. I believe the IOS firewall section also relied on the SDM. I really got nothing from those sections. We didn't even get a good look at the config that the SDM applied.

As far as my positive remarks: Kevin really did do a wonderful job of presenting the material. He clearly went out of his way to thoroughly explain what he was doing and why. For me it was too much hand-holding but I can easily see where others would need that level of quality attention. Kevin did an excellent job of presenting the material that they gave him to present. I would love to have had him present all the material that I thought should have been included.

The video was edited pretty well. It did cut off the last few seconds of each video which might not be noticeable in some cases and in others it clipped a few of Kevin's words. I do however wish they'd done something else with the video player. There isn't an installer for the content on the DVD. You can copy it to your hard drive if you want. Otherwise it will spin up the DVD drive every few seconds to cache a few more seconds of the video. Ideally the content would either be installed to disk or the player would cache much more of the content at once. I also wish the presentation had been more than a single screen. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to refer back to the network diagram from each lab during a configuration stage without having to rewind the video. Something more akin to the online training on the CPN pages or the Partner E-Learning site would have been more useful.

So, overall it's an alright product. It won't cover much of the CCNP material but I don't fault Kevin for that. For the price it's probably not a worthwhile purchase, especially for only 5 hours of material. The content is well-presented though. I would definitely buy any of Kevin's future works.

5 out of 5 stars It's a top pick highly recommended for either self instruction or college-level classrooms........2007-06-17

CCNP VIDEO MENTOR holds over five hours of personal video instruction on CCNP configuration tasks: while not a pick for the casual computer user or non-CCNP programmer, it will prove CCNP visual instruction perfect for any who plan on using CCNP in configuration processes. From lab setup and device addressing to traffic flows, network operations, routers and more, any facing the CCNP exam must have this package. It's a top pick highly recommended for either self instruction or college-level classrooms.

5 out of 5 stars See it, Practice it, Do it.....Succeed!.......2007-05-26

I picked up Kevin's Video mentor title when I was preparing for the rigors of the CCNP. I am familiar with other Cisco Press books but this was the first "video" product that I have used from them. I was pleased to see that all of the critical commands are outlined in the hardcopy text that accompanied the book. When I popped in the DVD I found it well organized, allowing me to focus in on topics specific to the exam of interest at the time. Having an expert like Kevin walk through all of the critical configurations gave me the knowledge I needed to then practice these on my own. I found the reference guide helpful as well, as I went out on my own gear and banged away with these commands. Having the chance to not only see the commands, but to also get solid training as to their usage via the DVD was critical to my learning. One by one I worked through the exams with the help of this DVD and found that I was very well prepared when it came time for each exam. The Cisco configurations that can be on the exams are one of the most challenging aspects of the exam process. Having the CCNP Video Mentor helped me to learn the critical commands necessary to succeed and gave me the resources I needed to practice these again and again. I really could not have done nearly as well as I did on these configuration tasks without the CCNP Video Mentor!

2 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......2007-05-07

The material that is covered is presented well. Unfortunately, there is just not enough material covered to justify the price. The videos are packaged in a single non-copy protected DVD. There is room for more than 2 GB of additional content. This would be a much better product if Cisco Press would use this space to deliver more content!

Formed in the classic textbook mold, Introduction to Cisco Router Configuration is designed as a supplement to the eponymous Cisco certification and training course. This is made abundantly clear in the end-of-chapter tests, the "Key Concepts" that dot the pages, and the bounty of diagrams, charts, and tables. But regardless of whether you plan to enroll in the class, this volume should be part of your networking library. The book's three sections deal handsomely with internetworking basics, networking protocol suites, and wide-area networking.

Internetworking (which editor Laura Chappell defines as that which ties LANs, WANs, software, and extraneous devices together) is effectively put in historical perspective in the first chapters. In addition, LANs, WANS, and the OSI model are all clearly defined both individually and in relationship to each other. The remaining chapters of part 1 address the OSI layers and data transport in more detail as well as basic router operations and configuration. The section on networking protocol suites is straightforward in its explanations of TCP/IP, Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), and AppleTalk in terms of the Cisco networking world.

The "Wide-Area Networking" section addresses the complex but essential topics of WAN connections, as well as X.25 and frame relay configuration. In the eight appendices tucked in the back of this book you'll find answer keys for those pesky tests, discussions of DECnet and Banyan VINES, and a host of other topics.--Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

    Book Description

Introduction to Cisco Router Configuration presents the foundation knowledge necessary to define Cisco router configurations in multi-protocol environments. You'll examine a broad range of technical information on routing models, processes, and design. Beginning with internetworking fundamentals, you'll work through the internetworking model, defining the OSI layers and path determination, then move on to basic router operation and configuration. You'll delve into the configuration details for IP routing, Novell IPX, and AppleTalk, and then examine IP addressing and traffic management with access lists. Finally, you'll explore WAN communications, including serial connections, X.25, and Frame Relay.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2001-02-11

Book is excellent, price is not. I lucked out and found it at Job Lot for 6.99 brand new. I bought two books there for $14, would have cost me $90 at the book stores. So shop around for a better price.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for the exam, Excellent as a review........2000-11-28

This book starts at the beginning of what a new networking engineer needs to know and works through several examples of how this works in the real world today. It covers TCP/IP, AppleTalk, IPX, X25, Frame Relay, and more, if you count the appendicies. Unsurprisingly, it's also the best study guide for the CCNA. The writing is vague in places, but on the whole a review of the state of technology this clear is remarkable.

5 out of 5 stars I passed the CCNA exam using this book........2000-06-12

I used this book to help me pass the CCNA exam on my first attempt. I found the explanations in this book to be a big help in remembering the CCNA material. I also used the CCNA Virtual Lab e-trainer to practice using the Cisco IOS commands.

    3 out of 5 stars Old book.......2007-01-16

With the new format for the CCNP tests i would advise getting a newer book. Although you will find very usefull information in this book the new tests require updated information that just isnt located in this book.
so over all its a good book but not so good for studying for the CCNP tests.

    2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2006-10-23

I bought this book for my CCNP recertification. I ran into a bunch of stuff on the exam that was not covered in this book or was in greater detail than was covered by this book. I used Sybex books before on my original CCNP certification and I passed. If I try to recertify, it won't be with one of those books. I'll use Cisco Press. Live and learn.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for CCNP, with a few errors.......2006-08-17

Once again, Sybex has come through with a great resource for CCNP studies. I have trained hundreds of students in pursuit of their CCNP certification with this book.

As the IT Mentor CCNP Boot Camp instructor, I selected this book library years ago as my primary resource for the class. My students find the books easy to read and full of usefull information. The labs are very good, and overall, the book is great.

Once again, my only problem with Sybex is that their books have a large amount of typos and errors in the first few editions.

3 out of 5 stars adequate as a review resource.......2005-07-23

Having all four CCNP topics in one book seems like a good idea. It only works as a review resource though. If you don't already know the material this is not the book for you. It doesn't go into enough detail on enough topics to cover everything that you need to know for the exams. It is a good resource to review before you take the exam.

CCNP: Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting Study Guide offers a comprehensive study of the topic but relies on practical experience as well. The book covers all of the stated CIT objectives, beginning with a theoretical discussion of troubleshooting methodology and generic troubleshooting tools followed by coverage of Cisco's relevant tools and commands. Then troubleshooting is tackled for TCP/IP, Novell, ISDN, AppleTalk, and other environments.

Like other study guides in this Sybex series, the CIT Study Guide includes chapter review questions and clearly states the CIT objectives covered in each section. However, laboratory exercises for troubleshooting are difficult to construct and are less frequent in this installment. A companion CD-ROM includes the EdgeTest CIT software with 200 questions and a trial copy of Visio Professional, as well as AG Group's NetTools and EtherPeek.

Troubleshooting is often more of an art than a science. Within any product category such as Cisco switches and routers, however, there are plenty of concrete technical specifics to master. This complete course will get you ready to ace the CIT test. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Troubleshooting methodology, OSI layer attributes, test equipment, Cisco diagnostic commands and tools, troubleshooting (TCP/IP, serial lines and frame relay), ISDN, Novell networks, AppleTalk networks, and switched Ethernet networks.

1 out of 5 stars Unacceptable absence of detail!.......2001-03-21

This book just pastes in the output of Cisco commands without any adequate explainations. Obviously the authors know less about the material than many of the readers...

Notice that all the "positive" reviews give no details as to what's good about this book. I guess Lammle and Co. are going to have to submit more "reviews" to compensate for this bit of realism...

3 out of 5 stars Not Sybex's best bot a good study guid.......2000-08-31

This is not the usual Sybex study guide quality but it's still a good book. I purchased it with the expetation of being a great book and it fell short. To me there was a lot of filler that didn't need to be there. I would have liked to have seen more meat and less potato's...I know potato's fill pages but the meat is what you need to pass the test.

This book will help you prepare for the CIT exam but will not get you there.

5 out of 5 stars This book has everything you need to pass the CIT.......2000-06-03

Hear me know, believe me later: There was not one subject on the CIT exam that was not covered in this book! Be forewarned, it doesn't prepare you for the ridiculous phrasing and grammer used in the test to throw you off. I don't think any book can do that. Only real world experience can help you though those. If you used this book as your main study guide and failed the test, it is because you didn't study enough.

2 out of 5 stars There is no 'real-world' experience in this book...none!.......2000-05-26

This somes up every chapter in this book: Pages and pages full of unexplained cut and paste show commands. Tuns and tuns of show commands listed in line, no real-world troubleshooting experience given to add some meaning to the commands.

The book reminds me of my college essays I used to do: Filled with padding to get to that mimumim required number of pages, and done at the last minute, without having done any 'real' research.

2 out of 5 stars Too Much Filler; "Troubleshooting Lite".......2000-03-08

I bought this book as a companion to my Cisco Press troubleshooting book, but in the last few weeks, I found myself referring to this book less and less.

There is some good information, but if you are taking CIT as your last or next-to-last exam, a good deal of material is copied directly from the earlier Sybex books in the series. Nothing wrong with going over the material -- after all, you're learning to troubleshoot the material you've learned previously -- but I felt like a lot of this book was simply regurgitating earlier books instead of giving me fresh insight.

As I said, there were some good points. The chapter on troubleshooting methodology had some good examples, and having screen output for the commands helps those who don't have routers of their own to experiement with. Even that goes to extremes, though. At times there are pages and pages of redundant screen output when they need to be putting more solid information in.

Also, there's not much information on the actual contents of frames in different protocols. For those of us working with CCIE in mind while working on our CCNP, that's detail that shouldn't be left out. Overall, the lack of detail in this book really surprised and disappointed me.

You might very well be able to pass the exam with just this book if passing the exam is your sole goal. For those of us looking for more detail (and the exam has plenty of that!), I would recommend the Cisco Press book over this one.

3 out of 5 stars Detail, detail, detail.......2004-07-15

This book is *EXTREMELY* detailed in its discussion of routing protocols. Although the detail may be useful for becoming a guru in the intracasies of how Cisco routers do their thing, I don't think you'll find it particularly helpful for passing any of the cert exams. Especially because the book makes no mention of IS-IS. Again, if you want details including actual router output, this is a good book. If you want something useful for passing cert exams, look elsewhere.

Try reading pages 313 to 321 and you will find coverage of HSRP. Good god and these people want to be CCNP's? I give up!

4 out of 5 stars Wondering which to buy for your 640-604, Cisco or Sybex?.......2003-05-22

I passed 640-604 Exam only studying with this book with the score of almost 900.

I also bought the Cisco Press's book for the same subject, but could not even go through it to the end once, because, it just made me very sleepy after few minutes every time I tried although I believe this is a great study book.

On the other hand, this Sybex book was very fun to read, covering the exam well. Even for those who do not have Engish as a native language like myself, can easily read this book, take the exam in English and can pass it.

The only bad point is, like the other reviewer pointed out, this book does not cover HSRP, which was still questioned as of May 2003. I would recommend that you buy the Cisco's book too and take a look at only that section to get a quick knowledge of HSRP, then you are good to go!

4 out of 5 stars HSRP on the test.......2003-05-20

Outstanding book. Provides everything you need to know to pass the test, except for HSRP. I realized that this was not in the book when I went to take the test. It was a good thing that there were only a few questions on HSRP. Maybe I guessed right, but I did pass the test and that is all that matters.

4 out of 5 stars A good book? Very likely........2002-12-24

I must confess, that I used this book only for:
    1) The chapters discussing multicast concepts and configuration (Chapters 8 and 9), and
    2) The testing engine and flash cards contained on the companion CD.
This is the reason why I chose to go with the average rating of the book on Amazon, which at the moment is 4 stars. I'm sure there is truth to reviewer(s) whose opinion affected the rating from five stars to four.

I opted for CCNP: Switching Certification Guide, a Cisco Press book, as the base for preparation. However, I found the discussion on multicast confusing and lacking adequate illustrations. This is where Todd Lammle's book came to rescue. Lammel's book has good diagrams to illustrate how source distribution tree, shared distribution tree, bidirectional shared tree, PIM DM mechanisms (flooding, pruning, grafting), and PIM SM pruning work. The understanding gained from this book helped me comprehend multicast as discussed in the Cert Guide.

The testing engine was just an added bonus. I particularly like the flash cards that I download on my Palm for when I'm stuck in a traffic jam, which btw happens a lot in a crowded city.

2 out of 5 stars Easy to read but inadequate for learning.......2002-09-22

After taking and passing the exam (luckily) today I can honestly say that this book did not prepare me well enough for the exam. Between 1/3 to 1/4 of the questions I was presented with I simply had to make an educated guess at because they were not covered in the book (For Example: I was asked questions about the user configurable options of PAgP and the configuration of the 3500 series of switch. In the Sybex book PAgP is given about 1/4 of a page that does not mention configuation and the 3500 series never appears in the book). On top of this there were several annoying typos and editing problems such as using the acronym CAM two chapters before it was defined as Content Addressable Memory.

It also appeared that Todd Lammle got bored or was working on a deadline because the last 3 chapters were in general harder to read and contained more errors than the first 8.

Overall this book is useful for those who are just beginning to learn about Cisco Switching and need a book that is readable to develop a basis on which they can build with other books such as those printed by Cisco Press. As a book that can prepare you for the exam or worse yet that can prepare you for actually working on the Cisco equipment this book is totally inadequate.
