I learned so much from this book.......2007-03-30
This book took my business, AUDIN Web Design, to new heights. Now anyone can just type in AUDIN Web Design in Google (or Yahoo and MSN, for that matter) and find me. This book allowed me to master Google, the juggernaut of search engines. If you cannot tame that tiger, you will not survive in the market place. My company, AUDIN Web Design, has helped many small business get ranked on Google. This is my bible. I carry it around wherever I go. I advise everyone to read this book before consulting a professional about your online search needs. You could get ripped off if you are not wise about your choice of Company. This book has given me such confidence with the Google juggernaut, that my company now offers a 100% money back guarantee policy. A lot of companies can't offer that because they don't know what they are doing. Read this book and get informed. It could save you lots of money, yes money, the stuff you work so hard for. The stuff makes the world go round.
A must read for any business owner........2006-03-09
Since Google is currently master of the universe you need to understand what Google is looking for when it ranks web pages. This book not only does that but goes into detail of other Google services like froogle, adsense and adwords. I highly recommend this book to anybody trying to build a presence on the web.
Easy to Understand, organized well.......2005-06-14
This book was very helpful in teaching novices how Google works with online businesses in order to make the businesses more profitable and also make Google move valuable. The techniques were easy to apply.

Solid Overview of AdSense, AdWords, Froogle and Catalogs.......2005-03-18
"Building Your Business with Google For Dummies" by Brad Hill is one of many options for learning Google's tools. This one is focused on using it to promote business websites.
You might not need this book. To find out, go to Google's website, and create an account. Look at the FAQs, testimonials and the help areas. Much of what's in Hill's book is logical, but is organized in as sensibly as any I have seen. I need this book for that reason. It saved me time from having to learn this information in a too slow trial-and-error way.
You'll learn a few important things about Google, and how to help them help you attract traffic, sell products, or create interest in your website.
AdWords
I have an online e-commerce site, and need to know Google. As a smaller business, I can't compete with the major companies in being listed in categories I feel are important. That's where Google AdWords comes in. It allows me, for a fee per click, to compete.
Hill's explanation of strategies and process is solid. There are ways to lose money, and he helps show how to test keywords, use ad groups, edit ads, and how to bid intelligently. He also looks at the premium service that allows big businesses to use oogle with less worry about click-through rates.
AdSense
AdSense, the tool that places Google ads on websites based on the page's content. While I only make a few cents when a vistor clicks through an ad, it helps me provide a service to my customers who do not feel my site met their needs.
Hill explains how AdSense makes money, and warns against cheating.
Increasing Your Page Rank
No one knows Google's formula for ranking pages. The most important factor is having useful information, being linked on other like-minded sites, not abusing the process.
Hill tells you what page rank means, and how to avoid mistakes many webmasters make. This includes tips on design, domain choice, keyword use.
Using Froogle and Google Catalogs
These are two features I have never used. Hill gives a good overview of this Google tool, which provides exposure to those websites selling products in a catalog-style, or through AOL and Yahoo shops.
I fully recommend "Building Your Business with Google For Dummies" by Brad Hill.

For the Site Manager.......2005-01-18
This is a book on Google's back end business aspects. It is not concerned with searching to find information. Instead it is on directing more attention, more business to your web site. The book is divided into two major themes, first working to make your site more Google friendly, and second working with Google's paid services including advertising on Google's site using programs like Google AdWords and AdSense. There's a chapter on Google's elusive Page Rank system that talks extensively about Google's philosophies on links and how they affect Page Ranking.

Great Book for Beginners and as a Reference.......2007-08-04
I had a lot of questions about the nuances of Google Earth, which is why I purchased this book. The Google Earth tutorials are nice, but only go so far in explaining how to use it. "Google Earth for Dummies" goes a long way for explaining the application, how it works, it's nuances, and how to use it for maximum benefit.
As with many of my "for Dummies" books it is a great reference manual that is well organized, well thought out, and well researched that makes finding answers to questions a snap. I use it when trying to decide how to do animations for presentations and how to most effectively illustrate points that need to be made through placement of different elements either from the 3D library or custom 3D items from Google SketchUp (there is even a short tutorial on how to use Google SketchUp).
In short it covers all the bases, is very informative, is intuitive and well aid out, and it functions as a great reference. Mr. Crowder deserves a "well done" for his efforts, and a "Thank You". It is well worth it's price and the time to learn what's in it.
Two Tech Books for One Earth Price.......2007-05-06
This book is a well written introduction to Google Earth. The fact that it doubles as a wonderful introduction to Google Sketchup means you're getting two outstanding technical primers for the price of one.
As a Google Earth fan from its beta days, I thought a dummies book wouldn't give me enough information to warrant the price of the book, particularly given the abundance of tutorial materials freely available online. This book, while valuable to its base of novice users, offers enough for an intermediate user to justify a thorough reading. For example, while beginners will appreciate the information about geographical terms such as defining latitude and longitude and familiarizing themselves with GPS jargon, other users may find the more comprehensive knowledge about the program's KML file structure and the explanations about the various layers in Google Earth more worth their reading time.
Now again, the addition of the materials on Google Sketchup, a 3D modeling program more likely once intended for CAD and landscape enthusiasts, means that even more accomplished users can use this as a tool to explore Google Earth's more advanced features. I myself had only cursory knowledge of Sketchup before reading this book and was sold on it when I saw how quickly I could get started with 3D modeling and put it to immediate use on Google Earth. Had this book not included the Sketchup section, I would probably have relied on web sites to fill me in on GE's other features. By reading the chapters on Sketchup, I was able to download the program with the confidence that I could begin using the program quickly. I even showed the program to several of my advanced fifth graders who themselves were playing with the program in no time at all.
As a consequence of reading this book, I am a much more capable member of the Google Earth community but I can also now boast some knowledge of 3D modeling. That's not too bad for an Earth dummy.
Book Description
- Considerably easier to use than other 3D software, Google SketchUp has found a niche in architecture, landscaping, real estate development, furniture building, and other design professions
- The fun and friendly approach assumes no previous 3D modeling experience and explains the basic concepts involved in 3D modeling
- Shows readers how to build a 3D model, print it, share it, export it to another professional design package, export it to Google Earth, and create a 3D animated tour
- Helps readers harness the power of Google SketchUp so that they can populate Google Earth with 3D buildings, monuments, and other sculptures

SketchUp for Dummies.......2007-09-26
Excellent guide on how to use SketchUp and the online tutorials which accompany the text are very useful. More notes pointing out the differences in use of this program by Mac users is needed. Google SketchUp For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))
It's pretty good.......2007-09-24
We are using this in the office and it is getting alot of us over the SketchUp hump. I would recommend this to those who are meandering through the new realm of 3D.
Great - for beginners.......2007-09-02
I bought the book because I wanted to get started using SketchUp to draw a house construction plan. I wanted to see what the house would look like in 3-dimension. I reviewed the on-line training files and got a good understanding of what SketchUp could do, but, as one might expect, there was not a lot of "how-to-get-started" information.
The book is well written and easy to follow. It is set up based on a training theory I like, trial and error. The base example is a house sketch with vague dimensions. As you begin to follow the instructions, you make mistakes. You quickly learn how to erase your mistakes and re-start. After a bit, I began to have something worth saving. Once saved, it became a means of re-starting after "big" mistakes.
It is truly a learn-by-doing tool.
I haven't used the book for the more complex features of the program.
I got what I wanted and the price of the book was a small price to pay for the lesson.
I used to use MacDraw years ago on a Mac. This is the best casual drawing tool I've seen since then.
Catchup on SketchUp!.......2007-08-24
If you are into SketchUp then Aidan Chopra's great read gets you up to speed. His web site has some excellent educational video's on SketchUp and along with the SketchUp download it's all for free....G.J.Crabb
Excellent introduction.......2007-08-13
This book is clear, consise and contains all the basics you need to start using sketchup.
The first three parts (roughly 250 pages) in the book are all you need to start using skecthup efficiently. The remaining parts of the books discuss more advanced topics.
In conjonction with the several online tutorials this book is the perfect companion to start using skectup.

Easy to read and follow.......2005-06-09
As always, dummies series of book is well designed for its simplicity, easy to follow and yet packed with neccessary information.
Not for advanced search like boolean, - sign technic or multiple keywords search wth "" mark.
Enough to get u started for sure.
But that is a new type of search tool that can be used together with Google, try at http://www.i1254.com
Very useful search tool indeed. May be next version the book will include a guide on how to use this search tool in conjunction with Google?
Anyway, the book has no detail chapter on how Google name origin from, i1254 anonymous to i want to find for ???
Worth every penny -- plus more!.......2004-06-29
If you want to learn everything you can about the most powerful search engine on the Web, this is the book you need. It offers tips and strategies in an easy-to-learn and understand manner. I'm generally not a fan of "dummies" books, but this book made me change my mind. The book is excellent -- worth twice the money.
A Godsend.......2004-05-04
Buy this book for your aging parents rather than trying to teach them how to search the Internet. Saved me from so much frustration, I would have paid twice the price. I only wish I'd thought of this before I tried in the first place. I'll never have to research my mother's vacations or mutual funds for her online again.
Plus, I consider myself a power searcher, and I even learned quite a bit I didn't know from this book.
More than just Googling! Way much more!.......2004-02-25
When I first saw "Google for Dummies," I thought, "A whole book about Google? How much can you say about an online search engine?" I browsed the table of contents and discovered how misinformed I was. After reading the book, I can say that author Brad Hill has done an excellent job of presenting how Google goes far beyond simply spitting out search results and swanky holiday logos.
"Google for Dummies" goes over all the functions, features, and fun tricks associated with the phenomenon that is now part of daily language. To "google" something is synonymous to finding information, and "googling" has become an indispensable research tool for knowledge. However, quickly spinning off from its primary purpose of trolling the 'Net for information on specific words and phrases, Google is now also into news, shopping, dictionary assistance, ad words, games, online journaling, and marketing. Brad Hill talks about all these in attention-grabbing detail.
And true to Dummies tradition, the language of the book is straightforward, simple, and brilliantly humorous. Editors' notes ("While our backs were turned, Brad Hill snuck some chocolate-covered espresso beans. We are now feeding him through a tube."), cartoon quips (I love The 5th Wave!), and the "Remember," "Tip," and "Warning" icons enhance the book's appeal to both the Google beginner (if there is still such a creature) and the googling geek. I especially appreciate the hundreds of screen shots that help me visualize what the author is trying to explain. And many thanks to Brad Hill for confirming that Google does not plant spy ware, and Dr. Mellifluous Boolean did not prophesy the Internet.
In short, if you want step-by-step instructions on how to optimize your Google search, how to use the Google Toolbar to enhance your browsing experience, or how to tap Google's functionalities to fire up your site's popularity, "Google for Dummies" has it all -- and much more, actually (heard of Boogle.com?). - Ruby Bayan (www.OurSimpleJoys.com)
good, but it could be better.......2003-11-18
First, let me say, that I did enjoy the first half of the book. I learned several things. The best part of the book was learning about the answer feature of google that I knew existed but never ventured into it because of the fee-based feature. If anything, he said to check how the researcher use google to answer people questions.Good information! And several key word operators were helpful. So,as a reference to check into once in awhile is not bad.But at 22 dollars I will explain why I was disappointed.
Mr. Hill spends way to much time on silly, worthless topics that are indirectly related to google. For God sake, he talks about a site that called elgooG that emulated google but everything is reverse. Why would I want to know that and how will that help me find information on google?
After the first half, I was ready to dig into it and waiting for some concrete examples of doing research with google.
In part 3, Putting google to work for you, I thought this is it. But rather then give numerous example how you can use google (using the main features )to get what you want, he talks about downloading google toolbar, or changing the language interface, duh! Anyone that has use google for than 1 month knows all that.
The book misses an oportunity to show how an expert researcher will use google to acquire information. Rather than spend time on stupid google games, alternatives to google, google site that mirrors google in reverse, I wish more time would have been spend on google and how to do kick ass research using one example and going through all the features and operators.

Google Maps may be the most popular .......2006-07-04
Hill gives an upbeat walkthrough of Google's various offerings, that are separate from its search engine. So you might apply to open a Gmail account, for instance. Though, unlike hotmail or Yahoo, there is no automatic approval, so you'll have to wait to see if Google, for reasons of its own, "likes" you. Fundamentally, there seems little advantage of a gmail account over those of other vendors. It certainly isn't the large amount of space you get. For most users, hotmail and yahoo now have perfectly adequate space.
Google Maps is probably the most entrancing offering. It can be mildly addictive to some users, by introducing an easy way to incorporate geographic visualisation into your data. This merging, done with fairly simple coding, is where Google seems to have won a lot of popularity.

Howie's Home Run!.......2007-10-02
For the past few years, Perry Marshall's "The Definitive Guide to Google AdWords" has been the "King of the Hill" tutorial for serious Internet Marketers when it came to learning Google's popular pay-per-click advertising strategy.
Well move over Perry `cause there's a new sheriff in town. Dr. Howie Jacobson is now in the driver's seat with his new book "AdWords for Dummies".
This complete guide can show the absolute novice who can barely spell Google if given the first three letters, how to set up an account or it can show the most experienced marketer how to put in place their split testing program or their conversion tracking.
While the information in "AdWords for Dummies" is spot on, it's the format and style that really sets this book apart.
Wiley Publishing Inc, the books publisher has perfected the "Dummies" series format for teaching almost anything and Howie's plugged into that. He's taken the format, applied it to Google's complex and potentially confusing program and done a great job in making it understandable for everyone.
Starting from scratch, even the most inexperienced rookie following Howie's step by step approach can set up an account, establish their budget, write their first ad, select a few key words and have an initial campaign in place in a couple of hours.
But here's the amazing aspect of this approach. As Howie shows you, your feedback is immediate. Within 24-48 hours you'll have some results. Good or bad. That's when Howie steps in. He next shows you how to begin tweaking your campaign so you can begin achieving maximum response.
Where Howie really shines is STYLE. Do you remember seeing the comedian Gallagher? Remember how he always said the word style......styyyyyyyyle.....it took about five seconds it seemed. Well, that how I would say it to you if we were talking. Howie's style has got a great sense of humor and an arsenal of relatable stories. He uses both in his teaching to keep the reader's attention and to make his points seem achievable by anyone.
Why's this important you ask? Well, this topic has all the potential to be as boring and dry as Alan Greenspan talking on monetary policy. Without some styyyyyle, the readers are heading for the TV remote and/or the refrigerator.
Howie doesn't let them get away.
If you are looking to start a pay-per-click campaign on Google and have no experience then this book is for you. If you want to improve an existing campaign, this book is for you too.
Howie's hit a home run!
Adwords Made Simple -- And Other Cool Stuff.......2007-09-22
When I started flipping through the pages of this book, I started to feel a sense of relief that someone finally made the complex system of Adwords simple.
Even for someone who knows the system well, like myself, to be able to have a book like this is like a breath of fresh air.....because it targets and highlights the key elements you need to know.
Sometimes we end up knowing too much on something, and the real key is knowing EXACTLY the most important elements.
Howie did a brilliant job of making this book user friendly and at adding in more content that ties directly to Adwords...like conversion and landing pages.
I even found a quick tip I implemented immediately on my site at UnlockTheGame.com...I added "7 days a week, 24 hours a day" next to my phone numbers and my inbound calls leads have dramatically improved.
Something so simple, which most online marketers miss.
Thanks Howie for a great resource.
The Complicated Made Simple.......2007-09-15
I've played around with purchasing ad words for several years, but I've never really understood enough to get the results I was hoping for. Despite the high potential, it's a subject that can very quickly get complicated.
Then along came Howie Jacobson's wonderful new book, and suddenly it all began to make sense. In typical "Dummies" style, this book makes it clear how ad words work and how to set them up to your advantage, and miraculously, it does it all in a painless (okay, enjoyable) way.
If you've been wanting to take part in the biggest thing to hit advertising since the invention of the 30 second TV commercial, but didn't know how or where to start, buy this book and you'll be on your way. You'd be a dummy not to.
This .......2007-09-14
Adwords for Dummies is very informative view on the complex Google tool. Howie Jacobson gives insight and direction with humor and simplicity. I have struggled with Adwords for quite a while now and I have found many helpful tips and practices in this book.
Once you have purchased the book Dr. Jacobson has a website "[...]" set up with tutorials and even more tips that guide you even further towards being successful in advertising with Google. I found this website very helpful also.
Adwords for Dummies is geared towards the beginner but it also has some great new ideas for the more advanced. I need to add that I found myself laughing out loud quite often.
Nice job!
The Million Dollar AdWord Book Review.......2007-09-04
You might call this, "The Million Dollar Review," after-all, I'm the guy, Dan Hollings, that recently orchestrated the internet marketing campaign for The Secret (Extended Edition) and thus, I know a thing or two about this topic.
Despite all the mass media hoopla, from Oprah to Larry King, the Wall Street Journal to Newsweek (not to forget, Saturday Night Live) and more... one of the biggest secrets about "The Secret" was that Google Adwords played a bigger role than most would believe. Yes there was viral, social media networking, word-of-mouth, database marketing and a plethora of other strategies all working in concert, but at the core of the millions upon millions in sales that occurred directly from optimized Secret landing pages was a humble Google Adword campaign.
What does this have to do with "AdWords For Dummies?" Well, I can't say I personally know Howie Jacobson (I'd love to meet him), but from what I read, it seems back two or three years ago when I could have really used some of the secrets now revealed in his book, Howie was more than likely out juggling or playing with his big goofy dog. Even one of my most dog-eared books of this category, the Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords (Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords) by Perry Marshall was not published until Nov 29, 2006; over a year after my work on "The Secret" campaign began. Ah, I guess (as the movie might say) the universe just wasn't delivering what I needed in a timely fashion! I'm convinced, however, that either of these books could have produced at least a 10% increase in my results (now let's figure... $24 million X 10% = a $2,400,000 increase in profits). I'm not sure I'll ever forgive the universe for this one :-)
"AdWords For Dummies" is slightly more for beginners (as is typical for The Dummies Series), while the "Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords" is more advanced. Heck, let's not dice onions here and cry; cut loose of 40 bucks and get them both. But be forewarned, you'll soon be tempted to crank out much more money as you compile the various keyword research, competitive analysis, split-testers and other pay per click efficiency tools recommended in these books.
Now, a few book review comments...
After basics were covered in the early chapters, Chapter 5 is where I began to slow down a bit and absorb. Here, Howie covered "Choosing the Right Keywords" and this is a subject I just love. Yes, I know a lot about keyword research, but finding even one additional tip or technique can make a big difference; I was on high alert as I cruised through this chapter. I was familiar with the 'Peel & Stick' strategy from "Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords" - but, Howie used it in a new way. You'll find Howie's expand 'Peel & Stick' strategy very helpful. A free tool to help automate this strategy is available from Aaron Wall: do a google for "Free Open Source Keyword Phrase List Generator." Rest assured, I wasn't born loving this keyword stuff, it's an acquired love, but you'll love the results too, if you hunker down and do the work.
Chapter 6, "Writing Magnetic Ads" got down to a series of very valuable and easy to grasp strategies that will attract not just clicks, but the "right" clicks. No magnets required! One trick Howie reveals in this book (yes, we all love cheap tricks) is the fake www-domain trick. How could I resist! Forgive me Howie for revealing this one here, but what fun I had with this one! Basically you write your ad, but at the bottom, where Google AdWords allows you to add a display URL, you enhance the authority of your ad by using a URL closely associated with the ad subject matter, but not exactly the real thing. Hang with me as I clarify. Let's say I'm wanting to market a book, like: "AdWords For Dummies" within AdWords, but I do not own www(dot)AdwordsForDummies(dot)com. I could get www(dot)www-AdwordsForDummies(dot)com and display in my AdWords ad a very impressive URL... www-AdwordsForDummies(dot)com --- go there, try it, it works! People read ads quickly and do not discern a (dot) over a (dash) so www- allows you to match your URL to your ad if you do not own the URL you wish you had.
Continuing in Chapter 6 (I guess the magnets kept attracting me there) I found myself liking this Howie dude more and more. I mean, he likes dogs, he can juggle, he has a PhD in something other than marketing, he offers free vegan oatmeal cookies to his readers (by email - pg. 153) and he even plugs his wife's Comfort Soap site. I love it. By the way, if you have young children and want to help them build self esteem (after they finish there bath with some nice 'Mango Butter' comfort soap), then get this book by my wife: LYDIA: The Story of How the Ladybug Earned her Wings. Yes, it seems Howie and I are a lot alike (except for the PhD part).
"AdWords For Dummies" ends with the traditional Dummies "Part of Ten" - sort of a top ten list of Adwords things to do or not to do. I must admit I was a little disappointed here. Howie admits they'd never make their way onto Letterman, but likewise, they'd not fancy my list either. A bit of a let down at the close of an otherwise valuable book; deserving of a spot on your internet marketing "must have" shelf. By the way, if you're wondering why I gave this book 4 stars rather than 5... I'm expecting more from Howie and I need to leave room for greater things to come.
Here's the formula: www-AdwordsForDummies / a batch of vegan cookies / and a nice comfort soap bath!

Who Can Keep Up with Harold Davis.......2005-05-15
I've been a fan of Harold Davis's books for some time. I come at them as someone who has been writing computer programs from the days when computers were room-filling monsters. If I need to quickly get going on a new programming language, I know that if Davis has a book on that language, that's the book to buy. But this book is way different. Sure it has stuff for programmers like detailed information about the Google APIs so we can easily build our own slick search programs. But it has fascinating information for anyone who uses Google - and nowadays that's everybody. I promise that if you get this book you will learn surprising and useful things about Google that you never suspected.

This book has the best information I have read about Google and the syntax of search. If I have a bone to pick it is with writing style which might be a little too humorous for me. But this doesn't bother too much. I am a programmer so I like the information about the Google APIs. It is accurate and helpful. But also the good information about research. And, where else are you going to find a Dummies book that explains the Internet, Socratic method, Plato, and Talmud? If these things at all are of interest to you, get this book.
Anybody who uses Google should buy this book!.......2005-04-10
I'm a webmaster, and I use Google everyday - both in connection with my sites, and also to research all kinds of things. This book will have you building research tools that extend Google. But more important, it will you teach about how to research, what is Google and what is not, how Google works, how to evaluate the credibility of what you find, and much more. If you teach someone to fish, you feed them for life. This book will help you research for life. It's the best book about Google I've read, and believe me I've read a few. If Google touches your life, get this book.
