Useful introductory overview.......2007-06-14
This book is useful as a jumping-off point for using Photoshop to create textures, and covers most of the basic topics that someone new to both Photoshop and texturing would need to know. However, you'll need to search for additional resources to complete the journey that this book starts you on, since it's a pretty basic overview with a few confidence-building exercises that give you a taste of the possibilities.
Excellent. Really!.......2007-05-26
Unlike the rewiever who gave this book 1 star, I am giving 5. Because unlike him, I find this full-color book very well written and very useful. It goes beyond basic texture creation tutorials. The first half of the book explains theory behind good textures and texture creation as well as ways to take pictures for your own textures. It gives lot of examples to demonstrate various points. The second half of the book is the tutorial part. The tutorials are detailed and easy to follow. The only negative thing I find about this book is, that the tutorials give you exact values for everything without explaining why these values were actually chosen. However, it is up to the user to make his/her own tweeking and see, how changing these values effect the final result. Also, I would like to see how these textures are applied to a specific UV layout, which the book does not discuss. But then again, the book is about creating textures, not applying them to your model, so I do not hold it against it. After all, the textures that are created in the tutorials are nicely done and you certainly can find a good use for any of them. So, five stars it is.
Worthless.......2007-05-24
Utterly worthless book that provides horrid explanations. Really not worth the money, or even a look, it's just a low quality excuse for a book with most of it's "tutorials" being available free on the internet.
Outstanding.......2007-02-07
Very well written and beautifully illustrated. One of the best Photoshop books I've ever seen.
One of the best i have so far.......2007-02-06
After looking though the first set of tuts for making the textures. It pretty simply. There were not miss prints or typos, i never got lost while doin any of them and even more so i put in my own style while following these steps.
Book Description
Maggie Taylor's digital photo collages have been described as a contemporary exploration of the Surrealist world view. In Taylor's strange, parallel universe, birds ride bicycles, ideas materialize in the shape of clouds, and wings sprout from the backs of prim Victorian women. Starting with objects that she finds on eBay, in flea markets, and in her own surroundings, Taylor then uses her flatbed scanner, Adobe Photoshop, and an Iris printer, to produce images of surprising beauty and emotional impact.
Adobe Photoshop Master Class: Maggie Taylor's Landscape of Dreams offers a close and richly illustrated examination of Taylor's practice, tracing her images from inspiration through execution. Taylor explains her influences, both in art and in her own life, and takes the reader inside the making of some of her intriguing, painterly work. Along the way, we hear from respected artists and critics familiar with Taylor's work, and from the artist herself, in conversation with the author.
Illustrated with more than 65 color plates, Landscape of Dreams is essential reading (and viewing) for all those interested in applying technology to a creative personal vision.

Save your money.......2007-08-30
I used to appreciate Taylor's work because of those almost inert portraits, until I read that the only thing she does is buying old portraits on ebay or flea markets to scan them and add color and other stuff to create their "surreal" images, so I think today's critics really don't care much and celebrate almost everything even when is not an original work.
Besides that, the first half of the book is dedicated to interviewing a dozen of taylor's fans -including her husband- who leaves clear statement of how a great artist she is, and the second part features her work with maybe 3 examples of how she did them, in a very superficial way.
If you get this book based on the title, you will be very very disappointed, even more if you really think in what some people call 'art".
Maggie Taylor's Landcape of Dreams .......2007-02-11
I read this book from cover to cover and enjoyed every line. The book includes a short biography of Maggie Taylors life and how she came to be the great artist that she is today. This book also goes through her creative process and the steps she takes with Photoshop to achieve her photos. This book is inspirational and gives any photoshop artist a kick in the pants to creat their own works of art! AAA+++
Inspriational artist and technique.......2007-01-18
It's wonderful when an artist such as Maggie Taylor is, shares her mastery of techniques with us... thankyou for this book!
Sunshine over Maggie.......2006-11-28
I give this book three stars for an average rating mostly because the title is a misrepresentation. It is a very nice coffee table type art book with beautiful and thought provoking imagery created (mostly) in photoshop but it is not in any way, shape or form a "photoshop master class"!
While there is some exquisite imagery and artwork within, this book is written with much of the hyperbole of art criticism today i.e. "Isn't this artist wonderful and completely groundbreaking and influential, oh my!". This is not to say Maggie Taylor isn't a talented and provacative artist but I don't feel she is re-creating and re-directing the surrealist movement as we know it as this book might begin to lead one to believe.
The author, Amy Standen, writes much more about Maggie Taylor's life and inspirations than her actual work and even less about her creative process involving photoshop. There is one step-by-step tutorial (which is available as pdf dowload with a little searching on the internet, I had it before I bought the book, actually it's why I bought the book) and even then it assumes much about the knowledge of the reader. There are several in-process works which show images of each in various stages of completion but talks little about the down and dirty photoshop techniques used to create them.
I would have liked to seen much more in the way of tutorials and creative process in the literal sense. It's more than acceptable as an "art" book rather than a "photoshop master class" book but let's call it what it is...
Beautiful to look at.......2006-08-14
This is a beautiful book, with lovely pictures of Talyor's work. My only complaint is that "Master Class" is a bit misleading. Although I learned a lot about Ms Taylor, I hoped to learn a bit more of technique. I am still very glad that I purchased it, though. Her pictures are fascinating.

Most chapters are very good. My interest is painting--I found that several chapters were just excellent instruction and tips-others were OK. Worth the purchase price to me...
Digital Collage and Painting: Using Photoshop and Painter to Create Fine Art.......2006-11-25
This book was like reading a great novel, I couldn't put it down! The inspiration was excellent. The incorrect assumption of some that "digital" means "computer generated" is debunked in this excellent work which has lots of beautiful examples of many kinds of digital art (not just collage). There are lots of step by step tutorials that are helpful and tips for using the tools of PS and Painter to their best advantage.
It is not a beginners book however as Bloom assumes that the reader is familiar with PS and Painter. Still this might be the work that makes one REALLY want to do the work needed to become proficient in these programs.
Loved it more than any other work on this subject and I already have a shelf full!!!

Buyer Beware.......2006-11-11
Ok, firstly if you want a hands-on plenty of action book stay away from this one. Sure you get to see how other artist have created their work but if you read carefully there are gaps between getting from one stage to the next in some cases. Also a MAJOR dissapointment is you get no images to play with so you can attempt to emulate what the artist is doing as you read. Using the same techniques on different images can obviously give you totally different results.
There is a small hands-on section (26 pages) at the back where you have to download the images to work with. Come on guys how about a CD..? You also have to download a total of 49 files off the web if you want all of them AND they are all largish TIFFS instead of jpgs so be prepared for a long download session.
Basically if you want to be a digital vouyer and have a perve at how others do it without having fun yourself buy this book. If you want to get down and dirty and have heaps of fun then look elswhere. I have read many good PS and Painter books but for me this is not one of them. I might add I am a very experienced PS user and more than a fair Painter user and while the author certainly knows her stuff the book for me is a major letdown and certainly not for a new user looking for a good start to take them to an intermediate level.
Bridging the Digital Disciplines.......2006-10-07
Artists create by combining and extracting elements, often employing diverse techniques, to express ideas. Sue Bloom's new book brings her background as a teacher and digital artist and painter to the reader by showing how different artistic methods can be combined to create a work richer than any single medium alone could provide. She does this, not just by describing her own work, but by inviting 21 other major digital artists to share their eyes and techniques. Of course, she provides some excellent chapters on the "basics" of digital creation in Photoshop and Painter, but her book's unique strength, I think, lies in going beyond all of the usual "How to" books. It is a book which bridges these different digital disciplines. It covers collage and panorama creation, along with artistic tools in Photoshop and Painter while at the same time has a large section on "Artistic Considerations" (which includes "Experimentation" ideas). Bloom's first sentence begins with the question: "Where does that kernel of inspiration come from?" She brings us many tools to use. Along the way, she offers inspiring and thoughtful quotations from artists throughout history. I took great comfort from her quote from Emerson that "Every artist was first an amateur." An inspiring and truly unique book. BRAVO.
A great book for learning new techniques and skills.......2006-08-26
This is a great book for the curious and creative artist who wants to use Photoshop and Painter as their tools for expression. The author provides plenty of information, step-by-step instructions and illustrations to help the reader go through the process and create his/her images. The book is not an introduction to basic Photoshop or Painter. The book is for the artist who wants to improve his techniques and learn new skills using these programs. You can practice, and apply the new skills and I'm sure that you will notice immediately the improvement on your technical skills.
The chapters on Collage are excellent and the author provides a step-by-step guide in the creative process of a diversity of images. She inspires you to use the newly learned techniques to create stunning collages. The chapter devoted to creating panoramic images is superb. You will enjoy this chapter because you can use any digital camera to create great panoramas and you don't need to invest in expensive equipment.
You will love the chapter on filters; you can practice and create new versions of some of your favorite old images. The chapter on Essential Photoshop and Painter techniques is a must for everyone who wants to be proficient with the tools of both programs. This chapter has a step-by-step approach to the method and you'll have plenty of illustrations and instructions to learn how to master the tools. The book provides five projects for you to practice some of your newly acquired skills. I'm sure that this book will help you find inspiration and will motivate you to go out and create great images with this wonderful programs. This book is a must in the library of every photographer and artists who uses digital technology.

almost a great tool.......2007-08-01
The text, as the previous reviewer writes, is excellent. I love the preliminary chapters for content and ability to communicate various concepts of fashion thinking. However, in the tutorials there are enough missing or unclear steps to frustrate someone attempting to learn new software. It would be helpful if the reader/user has previous familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to work past these issues. Needless to say, the text components that integrate Illustrator and Photoshop tools are quite helpful and promote realistic ways to use the software applications together. I am pleased with the text, but do look forward to a second edition.
Fab!!! Worth the money.......2006-08-11
Very insightful, very useful, easy to understand. Totally worth the money.

How to Cheat in Photoshop - A Have to Have Book.......2007-08-31
This is a very fun book to work thru. It comes with a CD that has photos to work with. You will install the CD and use the different effects over and over. I find myself going back to the book on many different projects. Most of the effects are ones that you can use in editing any type of photo. I loved the book and recomend it highly. Even beginners will find it easy to follow.
Straight and to the Point.......2007-06-09
Just got into this book and I love it already. It may help for you to have another book along for tool and palette reference. The accompanying cd-rom is a great help, but i just wish that it had more videos. This book is definitely one of the top PAdobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One (One-On-One)hotoshop books that I own.
Never trust a photograph again!.......2007-04-11
This is an excellent hands-on tutorial in getting the most out of Photoshop CS2, Ostensibly about creating realistic-looking photomontages (though most of the examples wouldn't fool someone who's paying attention), this book is actually for anyone who has struggled to learn about layers and masks and levels. It's accessible and fun.
powerful resource for photomontages.......2007-04-06
If you need a book for photomontage , this book is excellent.
it's worth every cent.
Cheating never felt that good. (At least not to me)........2006-11-06
Excellent! You'll found out quite an amount of useful tips, tricks and of course tutorials.
Great print and paper.
All the tutorials are explained well and illustrated well. Some tutorials are Quicktime movies on CD.
The CD also contains bonus content like files to test your skills on, some pictures, Photoshop files of all the tutorials in the book, and the deleted pages of second edition.
The content itself is very useful: almost all of the tutorials are useful, no nonsense. For me the chapter that discusses the vanishing points is a blessing (well, the whole book is actually), so whatever you Photoshop needs are, this book will satisfy most of them.
In short, this book's a great way to upgrade your Photoshop skills.

Rendering Fabric and Prints in Photoshop.......2007-03-12
Okay, this book has some great bits in it, but it's also full of a lot of "fluff." I wish it was more concise. I don't think it's worth what I paid for it. I can't say I would recommend it unless you are completely lost and want sections devoted to definitions, the textile industry, other printing methods, etc. I'm a Fibers student looking to go into the textile industry as a repeat artist, and I was hoping this book would cover more computer/program techniques. I learned better shortcuts and methods on my own than I did from this book. Do yourself a favor and find someone (or another book) that can cover Photoshop for you.
A BIG MESS!.......2005-03-24
Absolutely not worth the price it is being sold for. i agree with other reviewers that half of the information is totally not required.Plus the CD's are a mess as half of your time is wasted in searching the relative images in the CD for the excercises and some of them are completely missing!!! I could not render half of the fabrics as per the instructions since as they are very unspecific & confusing. So many pages have been wasted in giving a brief of textiles which is a different subject altogether and the one who would want to use this book has to be thorough with textiles. The information on textiles also is too brief & confusing.Aslo there were too many examples & mini biographies of people who are successful CAD/Textile designers which was totally not required.I hopped & jumped & skipped throughout the book expecting something useful but in vain.I finally gave up and returned it.Please do not waste money on this book.I really would like someone to come up with a more specific and useful book for using such important softwares like Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop specifically for rendering fashion as I desperately want to learn this. I expected that this book would be a good substitute (as this is the only book i hv found till now that uses photoshop to render textiles) for the highly expensive CAD courses here in NY. But unfortunately i was thouroughly disappointed. Can someone please suggest me any other good books related to Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop for rendering fashion, textiles & prints?????Suggestions are welcome - nins25@gmail.com
a necessary evil.......2005-01-24
this is one of only two refrences currently avlaible on the subject. (a third is coming soon)
there are a lot of editing problems, and missing files. extremly frustrating when you are trying to work thorugh the exercises.
but, i took the basics that it offered and ran with it.
it is a pricy book, but i would recommend it (as it's cheaper then the other book available) as of now, and seen the new book. hopefully a new addition will be released minus the mistakes. so that it can be more useful refrence for those of us intrested in this subject.
i'd also like to see some information on advanced techniques. and more info on using a drawing tablet.
the title is also misleading, as all you learn is how to render textiles.
Very Basic Instruction NOT Inspiration.......2005-01-02
This book should have been 1/2 the size and 1/2 the price. I nearly returned it, but since there are so few instructional books on Photoshop geared towards textile/surface design available on the market, I stuck it out.
I'd throw out half the content. Too much text is spent explaining the textile industry. While it is important to understand the textile trade/printing process, that's not what I wanted when I bought this book. Much of the book focuses on "Basic Design" principles, putting together a portofolio, presentation boards, the future of digital printing etc... like a Textile Design 101 class. Some people might find this helpful ... I found it infuriating.
This book is NOT about inspiration. The exercises are drab, the illustrations and sample files are plain and artless. Sometimes key information about where to look for tools is missing or mis-labeled. One section refers to a Demo plug-in to use, but it doesn't name the plug-in and there are no plug-ins found on the CD. There are product placement "advertisements" that annoy me. And the author assumes from the get-go that the "student" has access to a flatbed scanner and other expensive hardware; clearly a textbook geared towards a shared studio/lab classroom situation.
The CD is a disaster. NONE of the file folders or names referenced in the text relate to the CD content. Most of the files are there, but not in any logical order and with different file names. When the author references a file in an exercise, you can spend more time looking for the file than actually performing the exercise. There are multiple copies of some files and it's missing other files altogether. Chapter 3 is the first chapter where exercises with CD files begin, but the Chapter 3 folder is empty! There are tons of images of "Student" work that is completely uninspired and seems more like a way to get the author's favorite student "published".
This is an unsophisticated and horribly uninspired text. I kept it because there is so little available geared towards textile design.
My background is in Fine Arts with an advanced understanding of textiles including weaving, sewing, handprinting textiles and traditional croquis painting. I am very computer literate and am not afraid of software. I've never been able to merge my hands on painting etc to the digital realm and have been looking for instructional aids to help with that. I had high expectations and wanted a fairly sophisticated reference book. I feel like I'm sifting through a lot of chaff for a meager meal. I guess I'm hungry.
I'm determined to break through to learn to utilize a very sophisticated product (Photoshop) for my needs. I'll get my inspiration elsewhere. I gave this book 2 stars only because there is some value in working through the exercises which are specifically geared towards pattern and textile design.
> If you are looking for inspiration, don't buy this book.
> If you know you'll be dissuaded and frustrated by disorganized and missing references to files and tools - don't buy this book.
> If you're new to design and don't understand textiles, I'm not sure you will be well-served by the presentation of the "Basics".
> If you buy this book, glean what you can and ignore the discouraging mediocrity.
Excellent book!!.......2004-08-02
Excellent Textile and Fashion Textbook
A must buy for anyone in the textile or fashion industries. Beginners will find all the info they need to begin a career in fashion textiles and advanced users of textile cad will find techniques to solve many fabric related issues of CAD design.
The book has been fantastic insight to using Photoshop as textile design software. The enclosed CD has many easy to follow examples that are outlined in the text and a second CD has a 30 day evaluation version of Photoshop.
The portfolio and resume tipsalone are well worth the $60!
Book Description
Window Seat: The Art of Digital Photography and Creative Thinking is a complete view of a creative project from the artist's perspective. Julieanne Kost, a Photoshop and creative thinking expert, has taken her own experience shooting images out of commercial airplane windows to create a unique creative seminar.
The first section of the book, The Art of Creative Thinking: The Principles, outlines Julieanne's method for staying creative in an increasingly complicated world. In her personal stories, advice, and philosophies, you'll find inspiration if you're stuck or just can't get started. You may recognize some of your own less-than-productive thought processes as she describes her own struggle to let go of the everyday flotsam of life to find a quiet mental space in which she can think, dream, and create.
The second part of the book, Window Seat: The Portfolio, is a collection of images culled from over 3000 photographs Julieanne shot from commercial airplane windows over a period of five years. The photographs are accompanied by brief commentaries addressing various aspects of the process, from the original inspiration to issues of control, subject matter, image selection, and manipulation.
The Appendix contains technical information: a discussion of the equipment and media Julieanne used to shoot the photos; how she processed the photographs using Adobe Camera Raw; the Photoshop techniques she employed to correct, retouch, and manipulate the images; her personal file management system; and how she prepares her files for printing.
This book is essential reading for photographers and artists looking for ways to stay creatively awake, aware, and alive.

Wrong book for me........2007-09-20
I love aviation and photography yet lack any professional training in either field. I had hoped this book would be at a level I could gain something from--I was wrong.
For cloud lovers only............2007-09-15
I was really disappointed by this book. It should have been entitled `Interesting Clouds'.
Out of the first 121 pages only 11 and a half contain text, the rest are pictures of rivers, cornfields and clouds. This limited text is mostly fluff, with the author wondering why passengers would rather watch the in flight movie than marvel at what's outside their windows. The only creative thinking involved is that if you have to travel for work a lot, you might as well take pictures out of the window. The most technical advice is to not sit over the wing, and be sure to get a window seat (duh!), and let's not forget to be careful in the post 9/11 world, using a camera may be a suspicious activity.
The appendix (about 25 pages) is devoted to how to improve your pictures of clouds using Photoshop. I'm sure everyone has to have knowledge of how to remove tints and glare from airplane windows.
Save your money, go outside on a cloudy day with your camera and have a ball! Personally, I'm going to burn this book and take photos of the clouds of smoke, so that I'll get at least some use out of it.
very helpful.......2007-09-13
I have learned a new consepts in showing what is important in the picture. Great book and learning tool.
I love this book!.......2007-08-28
I absolutely love this book!
I found every image, every page to be filled with breathtaking beauty.
Even the most simple photos of clouds, Julieanne Kost has managed to create images the likes I have never seen before.
She has managed to take something that I had always taken for granted, the view from a plane window, and created a whole new vision for me to enjoy. Maybe that is the best way to describe it, her work is the difference between simply seeing and true vision.
I flip through this book whenever I am in need of inspiration.
I have bought 5 copies now and given 4 as gifts.
Everyone whom I gave these to, genuinely loved them as much as I do.
I suggest you buy your 5 now ;-)

Window Seat (The Art of Digital Photography & Creative Thinking) by Julieanne Kost
Reviewed by Diane Williams, member of the Eureka Photoshop Users Group, 6/20/07
Window Seat is 90% coffee table photo book and 10% self-help and imaging techniques work flow book.
This 147 page book is a beautiful visual memory of those sights you see when you gaze out the window of a plane. I know I have tried to capture what I see out the window of a plane and have been very disappointed by the images. I may be able to make something of them now with this work flow.
Kost shows us sample original images captured by her and we see the final image after she has applied image corrections in Photoshop. Her instructions are brief. This is not a step-by-step tutorial giving all the input numbers. It is a general overview of the work flow what may be necessary, how you get there by pointing to the tools, and what they can do for you.
The self-help part of the book lists Julieanne's 18 self help and creative thinking hints. Here they are:
Master your tools.
Listen to what your life is trying to tell you.
Be open to whatever comes your way.
Share what you know and learn from others.
Collaborate with other creative people, especially the quiet ones.
Be flexible. Learn to negotiate.
Fix whatever you complain about most.
View every challenge as a possible discovery.
Take 15 minutes for yourself everyday.
Figure out what you need to do to reach your zero point.
Integrate work and Art; both will benefit.
Take up an interest in something you know nothing about.
Look at new stuff- and what you already know- with fresh perspective.
Keep a journal.
Visualize first, Photoshop second.
Replace your thoughts with intuition
Play! Play! Play!
Know when you're done.
This book is worth a look even if it is just to vicariously have the window seat. It will not teach anyone much about Photoshop.

Ingnore the title, this books a winner!.......2007-01-10
I purchased this book for my wife when I got her a digital camera for Christmas. It was well worth the money. The book explains photography as well as post processing which is a critical part of digital photography today.
Excellent Work.......2006-10-16
Matt Bamberg's book Digital Art Photography for Dummies is an excellent resource for both the beginner and the advanced student of Digital Photography. I have read the book and of especial interest to me were the numerous overt and subtle suggestions about technique and execution. Suggestions which I have used to great effect to dramatically improve my own compositions and to better concentrate and focus my shots.
In addition I really benefited from the suggestions regarding how to process and enhance your work, post shooting. One of the more important foci of the book regards how to transform your work from more simple photographic imagery into more complex renditions which can be considered artistic. Matt explains these techniques for image modification easily and logically and it was not difficult with the right equipment and software for me to begin experimenting with altering my works to produce far more spectacular work. Work which others have expressed interest in. I have even become my church photographer and have recently had other people ask me to undertake photographic assignments on their behalf. In addition I have started the process of taking previous shots and altering them for inclusion into my written works, as graphic enhancements to my writings.
However the book also contains a myriad of techniques which are useful and helpful for the amateur and for the individual who uses photography as a part of their other work. I am often involved in investigations and through some experimentation and adaptation I have used techniques suggested and explained by Matt in order to clarify, focus, and render my investigative photographs far sharper, clearer, and more relevant for my clients. So the book has indirectly benefited me professionally as well.
I have enjoyed Matt's book, have visited his blog and site, and found him to be an accessible and helpful author. Additionally he obviously knows his subject matter and is therefore professionally well-qualified. He seems very experienced and yet eagerly experimental, two traits I like in any individual who is trying to teach me something new.
I have Matt's book and consider it a valuable addition to my personal library on the subjects of both art and photography.
I recommend the book.

Digital Art Photography For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)).......2006-09-20
This is a great book for anyone using digital photography -- whether
you are just starting out or have some experience. There is something
for everyone! I found it to be a great source of information when it comes
to Photoshop. Of all my Photoshop books, I find I reach for this one the
most. It is permanently planted by my computer for quick reference when
I need it. It has GREAT editing tips and is easy to read and comprehend.
Going digital...making art...this book shows you how!.......2006-03-10
I know Matt Bamberg's writing and love his blog (digitalartphotographyfordummies.com). If you're new to photography and confused by all the terms, Matt takes you through the basics (although he says the book assumes you know the principles of photography, he patiently explains the technical stuff). If you're a seasoned pro, skip the refresher course and just enjoy the fabulous photos--which, by the way, everyone will appreciate.
I'm the outgoing vice president of NLAPW Palm Springs--we were honored to be among Matt's first speaking engagements--and have seen our members create beautiful digital art photography. Thanks to Matt's book, I now know how it was done! Artists seeking to sell and exhibit their work will find great career guidance. For other shutterbugs, the book will eliminate some of those photos that you cringe at later (I know I have a few!)
The image manipulation tips in Photoshop are extremely valuable. This is a terrific book, even if you've only toyed with the idea of doing digital photography. Matt's vivid, lively prose makes this a pleasurable read.
You must get "Digital Art Photography for Dummies" if you shoot digital........2006-01-25
If you are a digital photographer that is starting out or trying to get into the "art" side, then this book is for you. This book is well written, easy to understand, and full of excellent images and great walk throughs. I can tell that Matt is very comfortable with this topic and is an expert in his field. It touches on many easy ways for new shutterbugs to expand their knowledge without taking the fun out of photography. His Adobe Photoshop knowledge is also very useful when post processing scans of film, slides, or negatives as well as existing digital images.
Matt, thanks for your time and energy in writing this book. I will recommend it to both family and friends.

Good for beginners.......2003-05-04
When I first got Photoshop 7 I really didn't know much about it, however after I bought the Photoshop 7 Savvy book I became much more experienced with Photoshop 7. I was able to explore new areas within the Software that I would have never discovered on my own. There are lots of good tutorials for advanced layering techniques and advanced selection tools that can be very useful for the first timer in Photoshop.
The only thing that kept me from giving this book 5 stars is the fact that it did not explore much into advanced filtering techniques. There are so many interesting effects you can create using the filtering tools and this book hardly covered any of them. Other than that this book is great.
Different, but not necessarily better..........2002-12-16
As a constant "student" I am always looking for new books to give me a great handle on a program.
Photoshop 7 Savvy is not only a new book, but also one that has a somewhat different taste than most other Photoshop how-to books.
The book was quite thorough in the new features of Photoshop 7, which was the main reason behind this pruchas, and I liked the different graphics and illustrations incorporated with the lesson tutorials, but as for the set up of each lesson, I didn't find it completely effective.
I already had a fairly strong handle on the software, and was looking for a book to update me fully on Photoshop 7 since it has been a while since I have used Photoshop at all...
There is a lot of cramming information regarding features, etc, before you actually get to a tutorial to solidify the knowledge. Then, the tutorials have a tendency to be "half-completed" leaving me feeling like the teacher did the hard part before I just finished it off. Admittedly, this might be effective for a lot of people but for me, I felt that I was a little ripped off - I learned how to select in one chapter, but in the next, it had all been done for me, and the focus was on something else. Effective for quicker learning, but not for thorough application -
As for everything else, it is extremely complete when it comes to exploring features, new possibilities, etc, but I still don't feel as attached to it as I do my other favorite Photoshop books. It boils down to great content, fabulous and new tutorials, great exploration of each possibility in the software, but lack of thorough application for the user, and a lot of cramming before getting to a point where the new knowledge can be used.
Good Photoshop learning book.......2002-08-20
Overview.
I am impressed with the quality of the content of this book from the Savvy range. I am sure that as programs get better, so does the production of how-to books associated with them. Possibly because not all the information needs to be re-written, now that the good programs don't have to re-invent the wheel with each new issue.
Features.
Easy to read and understand without talking down to the reader.
Useful lessons, in a sensible format.
Removes the mystique from a complicated program.
Gives good examples of problems likely to be encountered by the average user, and the means to correct them.
Includes instructions on the use of ImageReady.
I felt that a little more time could have been spent on explaining the use of curves and levels, with more examples. These are the major image preparation tools for photographers and graphics manipulators, although what is here is well explained. These two elements of Photoshop alone, could probably have books written about them.
Bottom Line.
This is more than just a useful book on the use of Photoshop 7. This book is one that can be used for any edition of Photoshop. Some of the commands may differ, but the new features of version 7 are highlighted as you go. The rest is a good book on using Photoshop, and why things work the way they do. The book contains a CDrom with tutorials that relate to examples and instructions, and some free and demo programs to enhance your work.
Book Description.
A paperback book of 600 pages broken into 5 sections.
1. Photoshop Core contains most of what you need to know to use Photoshop of any release.
2. Part 2 deals with colour and how it works.
3. Part 3 is more advanced, and teaches about the retouching and manipulating of images.
4. Part 4 is devoted to the Web, and how you can use Photoshop with digital video.
5. Appendices, which contains tool descriptions, file formats and most importantly, blending modes, how they work and what they mean.
To use Photoshop you really need to understand the way that the different commands affect the image that is being worked on. This book does a good job of explaining these things. If you know what is supposed to happen when a command is applied, and why you would use that command instead of another, you are much more empowered than just following a rote learning system.
Every program has it's own jargon, and a lot of the graphics programs, because they come from a print based background, use terms that can confuse the beginner. If you don't believe me, try explaining a clipping group to someone with no knowledge of this type of program.
The descriptions of how to repair old and torn images is very good, and most useful for professional and hobbyist alike. Photoshop 7 has a healing brush which is like a glorified clone tool to make this job easier, but other versions can use the same principles.
Not too much time has been spent in detailed use of all the filters, except for the most useful ones, and the others are explained in an easily unserstood way. Filters can be used to excess very easily, but once again, if you know what is likely to happen when a filter is applied, you can use them sensibly, and this book takes time to put that point across..
There is quite a large section on image preparation for the Web, and there are good tips on how to reduce file size without sacrificing quality. Also, a lot of time has been devoted to print needs as well, and the differences between the two fields.
There are descriptions of the different file formats and when and how to use them, along with descriptions of some of the more obscure settings that appear when saving or exporting files. Normally you just accept the defaults, but with understanding comes more control.
Type gets it's own section, and it is a very detailed one. This is all good and useful typography information, as the new version of Photoshop offers more flexible use of text, which is treated as vectors and not rasterised as before. For earlier versions, do your text in another program and then import it as an image file, but there is some sensible help here.
Layers are covered mainly by use of a hands on excercise, which is probably the best approach for those unfamiliar with this incredibly powerful aspect of all graphics programs. They are not too difficult to understand, but are best explained in a practical way.
The index section at the back of the book is large and detailed and a really useful resource. This consists of, A. Tool Tips, B. File Formats, C. Blending Modes, D. Keyboard Shortcuts. Maybe this section will get overlooked, but resist the temptation to skip it. Having read the rest of the book, this section is a useful quick reference on tools and what they do.
It is no secret that I like the Sybex Savvy series, just from reading two of them, but I think that the formula that is being used is a good one, and I guess that progress in the field of written information must change as we think differently about what was useful a few years ago, and what is applicable in the more sophisticated world of programs that we now have.
Might not be the best book for beginners.......2002-07-30
I ordered Photoshop 7 Savvy because I wanted to get deep with Photoshop. While I consider myself a novice user, I have done enough work with the program to make basic manuals redundant. This book fits the bill nicely. It covers some basics and it gets more advanced as number of chapters increase. I would have given it 5 stars except for the many typos I've found. Many of the keyboard shortcuts are simply wrong and will confuse, or worse discourage, someone who is new to photoshop.
Good book for someone new to Photoshop.......2002-07-24
PHOTOSHOP 7 SAVVY
AUTHOR: Steve Romaniello
PUBLISHER: Sybex
REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades
BOOK REVIEW: The first thing that is noticeable in Photoshop 7 Savvy is the color images that goes with each chapter are not included in the chapter but rather in a center section. It is very inconvenient to have to flip to this section to see in color what the chapter is describing.
For anyone new to Photoshop, Photoshop 7 Savvy is a wealth of knowledge about all the wondrous abilities Photoshop has available to the artist. Retouching old photos, creating backgrounds, warping images or text, changing color to Black and White, enhancing the color of a photograph, the ability to work in levels, and, of course, making the graphics web-ready are all explained in this book. There is also a section on Digital Cameras and resolution and image versus monitor resolution.
A CD is included and contains the images so you are able to work through the tutorials in the book. There is also a demo of Photoshop 6 Learning Studio by Sybex, an interactive trainer and reference to the features of Photoshop. This allows you to learn at your own pace and go back over anything you are unsure of or just want to review again. And finally, the CD contains a trial version of Photoshop-friendly plug-ins.
This book has over 600 pages of insightful and power-packed information for getting the most out of Photoshop 7. It will become a Bible for anyone needing the most from Photoshop.

Rhondda Boy.......2007-06-11
I would like to thank John Beardsworth for writing this book as it has given me much pleasure in replicating his creations and following his recipes are so easy. The quality of the printing of the book is superb.I look forward to hours of enjoyment making my own paintings.
Lots of errors.......2007-04-15
The concept is interesting & it is fun to try the different recipes, but many many errors mar the book. Also, some the instructions are less than clear.
Waste of money.......2007-04-04
There are many web sites with better information. Take a look on them.
Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results........2006-07-09
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.
not-so-fast ..........2006-05-04
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
Plus, the book gets off to a definitely poor start. The second and longer of two introductory sections is titled "The Tricks of the Trade". Well it would be better if just some of the "tricks" had been explained in full and more accurately. Say, how to make a selection in Photoshop from the best available precursor (a black-and-white alpha channel). Or say again, how to make tonal corrections to the original photograph using a luminance mask. Then again, the first (and shorter) of the introductory chapters, titled "The Artist's Eye", is just a teaser. This topic - pre-visualizing what can be achieved as an output image when composing the original photographic input - could have benefited from a much more detailed explanation/argument. Indeed, it could even merit an expansive concluding chapter (but the book doesn't have one of those at all ....). This is, after all, at the very core of what the user could harness to any given artistic objective.
Additionally, I think that it's strange that a book such as this simply makes no reference at all to what could be printed from the recipes it contains. Some of the finished (output) images might look quite intriguing as 3 by 5 inch reproductions in the book - but does the methodology hold up if you're targeting a 20 by 36 inch output (say) on a large format printer? And what to do if that's not the case? Finally, and in common with the earlier companion volume, this book suffers from strange and inconsistent layouts of screenshots and text, plus all sorts of technical and editing omissions/errors (which include, for example, having the wrong screenshot in the wrong recipe - see p.108).
