Word 97 for Windows for Dummies
ASIN: 0764502611
Release Date: 1998-06-05 |
Amazon.com
The Dummies series long ago proved itself an excellent means of explaining the elementary aspects of operating systems to new users. Windows 98 for Dummies continues the tradition with its admirable coverage of Microsoft's latest consumer operating system.
Windows 98 for Dummies begins by explaining the differences between PCs and Macintoshes and detailing the differences between clicking and double-clicking. In the process of introducing the operating system, Rathbone explains lots of incidental factoids, including what a graphical user interface is and how the Print Screen button has been given new functionality in Windows 98. He then moves on to the mechanics of window management, explaining how to maximize, minimize, and incrementally adjust the size of application windows. Other chapters deal with cutting and pasting, the accessory programs, and the details of getting DOS programs to run properly. Rathbone's prose is clear and intelligent, and a superb index helps you zero in on the facts you need in a hurry.
Throughout, this book carries the lighthearted adornment that has always characterized Dummies books. The attempts at frivolity range from clunkers (Rich Tennant's weary cartoons) to knee slappers (some of the author's quips in the text). It's always a pleasure to see a computer book that doesn't take itself or its technology too seriously.
Generally speaking, Windows 98 for Dummies stays away from networking issues. More Windows 98 for Dummies, the book's sequel, covers networking in some detail. Though LANs are sufficiently complicated to merit a second volume, it's too bad this book doesn't include any information on dial-up networking--especially since the author discusses Web surfing at some length. And Outlook Express, Windows 98's e-mail program, gets scarcely a mention in these pages. With Windows 98 more focused on connectivity than any previous Microsoft operating system, it seems improper to consign connectivity to a second volume.
You'll learn a lot from Windows 98 for Dummies if you're new to Windows 98 or to computers in general. However, the book leaves you hungry for more before long. --David Wall
Book Description
Windows 98 For Dummies won't try to turn you into a Windows wizard, but you'll pick up a few chunks of useful computing information while reading it. Instead of becoming a Windows 98 expert, you'll know just enough to get by quickly, cleanly, and with a minimum of pain so that you can move on the more pleasant things in life.
This easy-to-understand guide is for those who are yearning to
- Conquer Windows 98 basics
- Personalize your PC
- Send and receive e-mail
- Get more out of the Web
- Have fun with audio and video
- Deal with common problems and aggravations
Something in Windows 98 will eventually leave you scratching your head. No other program brings so many buttons, bars, and babble to the screen. When something in Windows 98 has you stumped, use this book as a reference. You won't find any fancy computer jargon in these pages. Instead, you'll find subjects like these, discussed in plain old English:
- Preparing your computer to run Windows 98
- Finding the file you saved yesterday
- Moving those little windows around on the screen with the mouse
- Running your favorite old programs under Windows 98
- Performing chores in Windows 98 that you used to do in older versions of Windows
- Figuring out which of the many Windows versions you're using
There's nothing to memorize and nothing to learn. Just turn to the right page, read the brief explanation, and get back to work. Unlike other books, this one enables you to bypass any technical hoopla and still get your work done.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have Book.......2006-12-01
I consider the Windows for Dummies books to be a necessity. When I purchased my old DOS machine, I used DOS for Dummies to help me when I ran into a problem and naturally, when I moved up to Windows 95, I put that book at my side. It was one of the first things I purchased when I moved on to Windows 98 and this book might be the best of all. It answers a lot of questions quickly and one learns new methods with the book. Highly recommended.
Windows 98 for Dummies.......2005-09-11
This book was very informative and helpful for a beginner that has Windows 98 installed on thier machine. It answered many questions and opened many new doors
There's no perfect computer guide............2003-09-19
For people still using Windows 98 (which in the current worm- infested environment seems a distinct advantage) this book is about the best you can do. Explains basic stuff, has good illustrations, and if the book doesn't EXACTLY answer your question, with some searching you can usually figure it out. The big questions remain 1) why are these products so complicated and 2) why isn't Microsoft publishing the best guide? It's really too bad that the BEST sources of software tips are the Q&A columns in newspapers.
Dummy approved.......2003-09-08
I purchased this for the lady of the house, an admitted newbie, raw recruit clueless computer user. I set up a computer for her in the living room, put my old dusty copy of Win98SE in it, told her to consult the book and not me should she have a question, and turned her loose. The book has done a admirable job answering her questions. A couple of months after buying it, I thumbed through it, and it did the same for me. This dummy thinks it's great.
Great General Information!.......2001-01-03
Got my first computer (really) two weeks before Christmas. It has Windows 98 as the operating system. With the computer I received two books to help get me started. Win 98 for Dummies and The User Friendly Guide To Internet & Computer Terms. Both are great. Win 98 for Dummies takes you step by step thru the process of getting acquainted with a computer. The User Friendly Guide has a great dictionary along with tons of tips and articles about computers and the Internet. There's so much to know! If you need a great reference book, spend the money and get both of these.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended - one of the best reference cards I've ever seen!.......2007-06-26
With a low price and packed with tons of useful information, this quick reference card is great for any user. It minimizes the time you'd have to spend searching through the instruction manual by outlining easy-to-follow steps for all of the functions you'd ever really need to use. The format is great and the content even better. It made me even more excited to use Microsoft Word 2007!
It can't hurt.......2007-04-26
This large format, tri-fold card has lots of stuff packed onto it. If you're completely new to Word, it will certainly be useful. If you're an old hand, however, and are hoping to figure out all the new locations and features, it isn't enough. For that, just find the Office 2003/2007 toolbar help on the microsoft help site. Get the card for reference, though. It can't hurt.

Customer Reviews:
Almost enough........2001-06-09
I being a fan of Dummies certifications books, I pick one up for every certification I am going to pursue. I don't just buy the Dummies books though. I buy at least two others. When I see something odd in one I consult the other two, and two out of three wins. The only problem I have with this book is the CD, there are no simulations exam questions on it. Oh, by the way I received a 960 on this test.
Just great.......2000-05-04
I heard about the MCP exams and wanted to do one. I was most familiar with Win 98. The stuff you need to know for the exam is not covered in normal 98 books. I decided to buy this book because of it's positive reviews. I did not know much about networking or the other exam stuff. This book will show you 90% percent of what you need to know. I also used the MS readiness review and the resource kit that comes with the 98 CD. If you do not know much about it start with this one. I passed with a score of 800.
Clears the Fog.......2000-03-08
Like many of you I am self taught. I purchased the Microsoft training manuals, test questions as well as many other books. I found the manuals and the Win98 Resourse kit neccessary but also very technical and confusing at times. The dummy book cleared the fog. I found the test questions to be much like the real exam. Beware though, the test has simulations that the Dummies book does not go into in enough detail for the test questions. Also suggest taking Transcenders. With out this book I would not have passed.
Good book for preparing for the exam.......2000-02-20
This book is excellent for passing the windows 98 exam. It does have some mistakes and misses steps when setting up policies on a Netware network with Windows 98 workstations. Used a lot of different books to prepare for the exam (Ziff-Davis certication book, Readiness Review, Exam Cram, and others)and I found this book and Transender to be all I needed to pass the exam. Hands on experience is also helpful.
Good MCSE book.......2000-01-02
Good book. Very few errors. I read this and used the MS Windows 98 Resource Kit(On the MS Windows 98 CD) as refrence and passed the test first try. The book doesn't cover everything, but along with the Win 98 Res Kit it is all you need and the only book you will have to *buy*.

The Easy Way to Learn Windows 98 !.......2000-04-28
Super 270 page book that takes you step by step through the process of learning and using Windows 98. I found most everything I needed to know to get me started, and much more. It features a very complete table of contents and index to help you quickly find the info you want, then presents the info in an easy to understand manner, without the technical jargon the "experts" use. Topics range from Bare Bones Basics, Fixing Problems and Understanding Windows and Menus, to Printing Files, Sharing Information, Changing Settings and Finding Help When an Error Message Appears On Your Screen (An aid that I use often). This volume contains more data than some of the much more expensive videos and books I've seen, and its even easier to use. A free CD-Rom is included to help you. I refer to the book often. Well worth the price.
Review of "Dummies 101, Windows 98".......1999-12-13
If you want to start computing and you are really at ground zero--my exact scenario, I'm afraid--this is your bible! This book assumes you know nothing--my exact scenario, I'm afraid--and gets you going painlessly and with humor. It comes with a cd to download for on-screen, hands-on lessons; what more could you ask for? NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH "WINDOWS 98 FOR DUMMIES," this book, "Dummies 101,Windows 98" is the place for you to start if "Windows 98 for Dummies" was over your head--my exact scenario, I'm afraid. Of course now I'm a whiz, but this book got me started and I'm sending copies to friends in need this X-Mas.

Not for everyone.......2001-03-21
Although this book does contain some valuable information,I dont think it's as quick as some may hope.I think this book would be more useful, to someone setting up their very first computer system. If you need instruction on how to use your mouse or acess a web site, this book is for you.Besides all the information you need to correct most problems is already in your computer, learn how to acess that and your on your way. With things changing as fast as they are and each little computer problem being so specific, I dont think any one book could answer all your questions anyway. Now get out there and prove your not a dummie
Windows 98 for Dummies Quick Referenced.......2000-05-30
An indispensable book for the beginning Window's user. The key is Quick Reference. The new users of the Window's Operating System (yes they are out there) find thick techno, computer terminology reference books boring and have trouble relating to them. I fell in love with this book the first time I needed to reference it because of it's no nonsence, plain english approach to shortcuts, changing icons, and customizing your destop to your needs and tastes, just to name a few. It gives the beginner a starting place without boring background history about how the operating system and how it works, how it began, in what year, etc. It also builds the confidence of the first time user so they can buy and use more detailed IDG Books with great ease. Now, with that being said, it also makes a great reference book for those of use who like to think of ourselves as advanced users of the Windows Operation System since we have used this system at home and college for 13 years. I was and am very impressed. I give this book as a present to all my friends, co-workers and family members who get or work on their first Windows based PC.
If you have your Windows 98 manual, you won't need this book.......1999-10-16
I bought the quick reference looking for short-cuts or tips, and there aren't any in this book. There isn't anything in "Windows® 98 For Dummies® Quick Reference" that isn't already in your Windows® 98 manual. Save your money, or better yet, buy a magazine subscription to a PC magazine instead.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2000-01-04
These days it has become difficult to find programming reference manuals that are both complete and concise. This quick reference is the perfect programming companion to the Win32 API. I would give it 5 stars except that it could use a few more bits of sample code.
