Book Description

If you're new to Windows 2000 Server or to networks in general, fear not, because using a network is not beyond anyone's wits or abilities -- it's mostly a matter of using a language that ordinary people can understand.

Windows 2000 Server For Dummies covers new Web-enabled network features and Active Directory administration for Windows 2000 in plain language. It's full of easy-to-understand instructions that enable you to find your way around a Windows 2000 Server-based network and...

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY if you want to learn Win2k Server!.......2004-11-07

I bought this book because I wanted to learn how to use the software. This book does nothing but explain what certain general aspects of the program (and networking in general) are, but NOT how to use them. This is not a "how to use" manual. If you know basic info about networking do not buy this book because that's all you really get. So, I repeat, this book does instruct on how to use Windows 2000 Server! Don't waste your money and time!

2 out of 5 stars little bit about everything, not enough about anything.......2003-01-02

I bought this book because I wanted a simple introduction to using windows as a server. I was very dissapointed to find that the entire first third of this book is a very basic rundown of networking in general, ethernet, bus/star topologies, tcp/ip, etc. Then the book spends two chapters on active directory, which is useless as not even Active Directory For Dummies could cover the whole topic. It also covers being a "print server" and manages to devote an entire chapter to "right click -> share". Overall I literally learned nothing useful. I'm still unsure about adding/managing user accounts, and know nothing about IIS.

5 out of 5 stars Broad and easy to understand.......2002-09-04

I would highly recommend this book to beginners in using Windows 2000 Server, as well as those who are new to networking in general. I expected this book to be entirely devoted to the actual operating system, but the first two parts of the book cover basic characteristics of any network, and what you will need to set one up. After this fine introduction, the authors guide you through installation, configuring, and maintenance. Their style remains clear throughout the book, the jokes are not as corny as in some other Dummies books, and the directions are clear. A good book for studying Win 2K Server *and* networking in general.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Reference book.......2002-03-25

First I want to make it clear that the review of this book entitled "Good prep book if you supplement it" by "tonywr" should be removed because I believe he wrote the review for the wrong book. I believe he was reviewing "MCSE Windows 2000 Server for Dummies (with CD-ROM)" by Curt Simmons. Why do I believe this? First of all, this book does NOT come with a CD-ROM, the reviewer clearly stated that his book did. Secondly, this book is not intended to be a guide for the MCSE Windows 2000 Server test(70-215) or any other MCSE test. It is merely a book to help you set up a windows 2000 client/server network. It does so very well. If you have never set up a server before this book will show you exactly how to do it. And further, it will show you some basic adminstration of your network. It is a good first step in client/server networks for people who have very little knowledge about computer networks. I do not have enough time right now, so I will not give a review of this book. I just wanted to point out that the other review should be disregarded, as the reviewer did not actually read this book, although his opinion of this book would be correct that it will not be sufficient alone to help you pass the MCSE tests, but that is because this book has nothing to do with the MCSE tests, other than the fact that this book and the MCSE Windows 2000 Server test(70-215) are both about windows 2000 Server.

3 out of 5 stars Good prep book if you supplement it.......2001-08-28

I am a great fan of the "dummies" books so when I found one of the other 2000 test prep manuals lacking, it seemed natural to pick this one up. I read it cover to cover, and actually took the test on the enclosed CD. The book was good enough, though I found the test CD less than helpful. After supplementing this book with a two hour scan of one of the dictionary sized prep manuals I passed the test easily. Use it to get a good start on your way to passing the Microsoft 2000 Server test.

5 out of 5 stars passed with ease.......2003-07-15

I used this book with Transcender tests and felt very comfortable hitting that submit button (and yes, I passed). Simmon's writing is pleasant to read and easy to understand. The the practice CD seemed to have a few errors, but the book itself is great.

3 out of 5 stars A good place to start but not a 1-stop shop.......2002-10-17

I found this book to be a very good place to start but DON'T rely on this book alone to get you through the exam! There are several areas (e.g. Active Directory & Subnetting) that were not covered in the book yet these appear on the exam and others that are not covered in anything like enough detail. Also, while the test questions on the CD are a good way of checking your knowledge of the topics covered in the book they don't really prepare you for the questions you will meet on the exam. For this, I recommend using 3rd party (e.g. selftestsoftware etc.).

2 out of 5 stars Rehash of Dummies 70-210.......2002-01-18

I had great luck with the "Dummies" book for exam 70-210, but this was a disappointment. Coverage of DNS and DHCP was marginal and IP section ommited some important subnetting instruction, i.e. describing subnet masking. I used the Self Test Software exam simulation (which was fairly accurate) and it had ip issues in it that weren't covered in the book. The 70-210 "Dummies" book gave a good background which helped. I got 800 on the 210 test and 700 on the 215 with the same studying.

1 out of 5 stars Not much help when it comes to exam 70-215.......2001-07-17

This is a good intro to Windows 2000 but is very bad as a Windows 2000 server study guide for exam 70-215. Has nothing about Active DIR. Nothing about Policies, not enough about Org policies. I would NOT advise anyone who wants to pass this test to use this book.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed about the cd.......2001-07-02

When I start preparing for a MS exam I always buy a Dummies book. I used the For Dummies when I did the 70-098 and 70-210 exams so I bought this title without looking at the reviews.

This book by itself would not have given me a passing score. There is nothing about Active Directory or Group policies in this book and I had quite a few questions on the exam about these subjects. The book did give me some good info and is good to start of with.

Biggest dissapointment is the cd. Almost an exact copy of the 70-210 cd with a few extra questions. It hardly had questions related on the book.

I just bought 70-216 and 70-217 from the dummies series because I think they deliver superb reading material.

5 out of 5 stars Outdated now, but not a bad book.......2005-03-31

Yes, it's outdated, but I was playing around with an old PC I had in my garage with Windows 2000 and it so happened an office-mate had a copy. This was just the thing I needed in order to set things to right. VERY useful book with a lot of good solutions...if you enjoy tinkering with older equipment, this book is STILL useful.

1 out of 5 stars Pass on this one.......2001-03-29

Would this book be helpful for someone new to networking and Windows 2000 Server who wants to set up a simple network? No, it's almost completely lacking in specifics (how to's). Is it helpful for the experienced adminstrator? Probably not, it's too basic. Is it helpful for those in the middle? No, because it lacks both specific configuration instructions and in-depth explanations. As a person completely inexperienced with Windows networking, I needed a book that would walk me through the configuration of Windows 2000 Server, and the configuration of the client machines. This book was nearly worthless for me. I ended up configuring my server by painstakingly clicking on the countless 'help' indexes in Windws 2000 Server, and experimenting with configuration settings through trial and error.

1 out of 5 stars There are Probably Better Ones Out there!.......2000-10-25

Having worked as a systems administrator for a Windows NT (as well as Unix and Linux) network(s), I found this book to be completely silly, and of hardly any real use whatsoever. Bellmo's attempt at providing an intelligent and useful guide to the implementation of a W2K server and network is no better than a Public Relations blurb for Microsoft. He relies on a number of unsupported assumptions about the superiority of W2K without actually discussing (or demonstrating) how this latest version from the Microsoft family is better than the previous one. He wastes valuable time praising the new "bells and whistles" W2K has to offer, when he should have spent more time and energy explaining (and showing) how W2k might make your LAN more reliable and less costly. This book, like so many others, is mostly just technical hype.

5 out of 5 stars Quite a helpful read.......2000-05-18

Compared to Microsoft's documentation, this was great---a lot more straightforward. (Microsoft could do a lot for their image if they'd produce user guides of this quality instead of the garbage they generally put out.) The printer coverage was particularly helpful. It also made a BIG difference in my understanding of the variations in features and capabilities between the multiple "flavors" of Windows 2000 that are out right now.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-05-06

I havent gotten heavily into 2000 yet, but I plan too soon. I did find this book very helpful, and has me planning on using 2000 more soon.

Microsoft Windows 2000 is set to assume its place as the software titan's flagship operating system, and you'd better be prepared. Migrating to Windows 2000 for Dummies describes what the new offering from Redmond can do, whether it's appropriate for you, and how to proceed if you decide to go ahead with deployment. Though it's written as a primer for organizational information systems specialists, it will benefit people who administer computers for small businesses as well as individual users.

This book is most valuable as a decision-making aid, but it incorporates a considerable amount of procedural information that author Leonard Stearns tested against a near-final version of Windows 2000 Server. You'll find explicit procedures on installing and configuring Active Directory (AD), as well as Terminal Services and several security options. The Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is discussed too. Simply put, this book is a fine introduction to Windows 2000 Server and its essential operations. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, as it applies to users of Windows NT 4 (and to a lesser degree Novell NetWare, Unix variants, and combinations of the three). An overview of what Windows 2000 Server can do, why you might want to install it, and how to get ready for the changeover, plus some of the procedural details of the operating system, particularly those having to do with Active Directory and Terminal Services.

As system administrator for Internet Outlet, it's part of my job to stay on top of new technologies. When I first heard about Windows 2000, I wanted to find some information about it from a source other than Microsoft. A friend told me about this book, so I bought it.

This book is a necessary primer for anyone interested in migrating to Windows 2000. Stearns provides concise information with 'how to's' and screen shots that helped me deploy this new network operating system with ease and simplicity. I like the fact that you can open the book to any section you want and get the information you need.

I highly recommend this book for enterprise executives and administrators both. I've purchased 6 copies for key people in my organization.

The Registry hasn't gone away. It's more important than ever--and every bit as cryptic as before--in Windows 2000. Windows 2000 Registry for Dummies explains what the Registry is used for, how it works, and how you (a power user with an interest in optimizing the appearance and performance of your PC) can perform surgery on it. Throughout this book, the emphasis is on exploration and experimentation with the greatest possible degree of safety, so you're given full information on backing up the Registry before the authors show you how to start paring away at its branches and leaves.

You'll find lots of conceptual information, including a neat explanation of the Registry's logical structure and the files that hold it. But the best part of Weadock's work may be his little how-to items, such as the one that explains how to sort the items in the Start menu alphabetically and the one that automatically clears lists of recently used documents (and recently visited Web sites). Sometimes he opts for a Registry solution when a non-Registry approach exists (as in the case of getting My Computer to open in Explorer view), but that's not a problem. Overall, you'll be pleased with Weadock's approach to a Windows 2000 detail that wasn't really meant for human eyes. --David Wall

Topics covered: The purpose and operation of the Registry in Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server, making Registry backups and restoring the Registry from them, using Registry editors (regedit.exe and regedt32.exe, especially), organizational structure, user profiles, handy tricks and customizations, and the Registry's networking effects.

5 out of 5 stars The best so far.......2004-01-02

As a professional dealing everyday with real world PC problems, like people locking themselves out of their own computers or tinkering with Windows till nothing really works, this book has really helped me.Glenn knows his stuff and on top he offers tips that you don't find anywhere else.I was impressed by the "reader-friendly" style of the book in general, something that you appreciate when you have to read too many times books that are simply boring.I am looking out for the next book he writes!

5 out of 5 stars Right On Topic.......2001-07-11

This book is an absolute must-have for anyone embarking into an IT career. Definitely for beginners, the text covers everything you could possibly want to know about that beast called the REGISTRY. However, seasoned pros will also find some useful tidbits of knowledge tucked away in here too. The author stresses the importance of when and where to backup the registry files and he outlines several methods for accomplishing the task. Glenn Weadock guides us through the tasks of cleaning and compressing the registry to improve overall system performance. He does a fine job detailing the structure of the registry too, a read that will benefit anyone going after their MCSE. When possible, third party utilities for manipulating the registry are compared to those resident in the Windows OS; the pros and cons of each are covered in just enough detail. Beginners will enjoy this book because it's easy to read. Pros will like it because of it's organization. Easy to read and easy to use, pick this one up if you need a solid introduction to the Windows Registry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and the advanced.......2001-05-04

Frankly, with my background and credentials I was embarrassed when I bought this (a "Dummies") book. Simply put, I bought it because I was sick to death of knowing absolutely nothing about the Registry (as in *ABSOLUTELY NOTHING*) and I was sick to death of those other infernal Registry books that are six centimeters thick!

Having read Mr. Weadock's book very thoroughly cover to cover, I'm now completely familiar with the MS Registry editors, how to use multiple methods to backup and restore the entire Registry (or just parts of it), and the layout and organization of the Registry. I'm now able to do things to my W2K (and NT4) machines that can only be accomplished by editing the Registry... things that have been eluding me for over two years! I'm also finding that I now know more about the Registry and the MS editors than even my most skilled colleagues.

Please, don't be afraid of this book. It's an easy and pleasant read. But also, please don't underestimate this book... it taught me enough that I've actually put a seasoned veteran or two to shame.
