Book Description
Ninety percent of Americans own a copy of the Bible, and while it’s the most widely read book, it’s also the least understood. Regardless of your religion, understanding the Bible brings much of Western art, literature, and public discourse into greater focus—from Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” painting to the Wachowski brothers’ The Matrix movies. People have historically turned to religion to deal with tragedy and change, and with the right insight, the Bible can be an accessible, helpful guide to life’s big questions.
The Bible For Dummies appeals to people of all faiths, as well as those who don’t practice any particular religion, by providing interfaith coverage of the entire Bible and the often fascinating background information that makes the Bible come alive. You’ll find answers to such questions as:
- Where did the Bible come from?
- Who wrote the Bible?
- How is the Bible put together?
Follow the history of the Bible from its beginning thousands of years ago as tattered scrolls to its status as the bestseller of all time. The Bible For Dummies covers these topics and more:
- Ten people in the Bible you should know
- The Hebrew Bible
- The Apocrypha’s hidden treasures
- What’s new about the New Testament
- Israel’s wisdom, literature, and love poetry
- The Bible’s enduring influence
- The prophets: more than fortunetellers
Discover the world’s all-time bestseller in an entirely new light. Whether you’re interested in broadening your spiritual horizons, uncovering the symbolism of Western culture, or gaining a deeper understanding of the book you grew up reading, The Bible For Dummies has all the information you need to navigate this ancient and fascinating book.

Great reference........2007-06-13
I found this book very easy to understand and I like the fact that you can start anywhere in the book and still get valuable information. I would recommend this book to any serious student of the bible.

My mother in law
loves it she said" I love the book
thank you again "
For those who are busy.......2007-03-30
I have tried to read the bible straight thru and never suceeded--life came at me in many directions. After 3 years of trying, i gave up and bought the bible for dummies. This book helped me UNDERSTAND the bible, not only read the words, both equally important in my opinion. Once i started reading this book, time opened up for me and i read it in a matter of 2 weeks! I couldn't put it down--the more i learned, the more i wanted to know and keep learning. I intend to reread it because for the first time in the 4 years i have been a christian, i truly understand the religion. I would recommend this book for everybody no matter where you are in your spiritual journey. Good luck and God Bless
Good to have.......2007-03-26
Even though I study the Bible regularly, this helps pull a lot of the key things together.
Great refresher or for the beginner it will get you right on track!
Interesting, funny, and understandable guide to the Bible.......2007-01-17
Both my husband and I have enjoyed reading The Bible for Dummies. It is like the Cliffs Notes version of the Bible -- making it understandable without having to attend a theology class!

Book Description
If you belong to any type of organization—from school board to garden club to bowling league to trade association—chances are this book can save you many boring meeting minutes. Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised is the current authoritative guide for properly conducting everything from sessions of the U.S. Senate or House of Representative to meetings of neighborhood associations. This friendly guide translates Robert’s Rules into principles you can understand and apply the next time Billy Bully tries to dominate the discussion or Debbie Dictator issues another edict. If you’ve ever been frustrated at the way condominium association business was (or wasn’t) conducted or fidgeted while PTA members debated whether to have goldfish or pencils as prizes for the elementary school carnival, this is the book for you. Written by a Professional Registered Parliamentarian, it covers:
- The basics of bylaws that establish the real framework of your organization, and nine things that should be covered
- The requirements for a legal meeting
- How to use an agenda to plan your meeting and keep things on track
- Following the standard order of business
- How to put ideas into motion and the eight steps to handling a motion
- Voting procedure and different methods of voting
- The functions and characteristics of seven subsidiary motions, five privileged motions, fifteen incidental motions, and four motions which bring a question again before the assembly
- Nomination procedures, holding elections, and making appointments
With Robert’s Rules For Dummies, you’ll not only discover how to hold more effective meetings, you’ll get advice for dealing with malcontents or monopolizers who can disrupt, derail, or prolong meetings. And if you’re in a leadership position, you’ll get great information on:
- Running meetings efficiently and fairly
- Effectively using standing and special committees
- Ensuring proper paperwork, including minutes, treasurer’s reports, committee reports, and more
- Handling discipline or removing officers or members
Complete with a glossary of parliamentary terms and sample agendas, reports, and minutes, this guide has everything you need but a gavel. Whether you belong to an elite country club or a civic organization, an investment club or a volunteer fire department, when you use the principles in this book, meetings won’t be dominated by the loudest or pushiest member or go on and on and on and on and on….

I own the book and have even had a question answered by the author. The book is first rate. I highly recommend "Dummies." Its made me less of one!
Roberts Rules of Order for Dummies.......2007-08-26
Very helpful by its simplicity. Great as a quick reference in order to then go to Roberts Rules of Order for a more indepth answer.
Robert's for Dummies works!.......2007-08-25
This was actually for my wife, who is currently parliamentarian for a local non-profit organization, which she has some prior experience at. Nonetheless, as soon as the book arrived, she curled up and read it "cover to cover" and made a bunch of notes from it to share with others. Next thing I knew, she was putting her official Robert's Rules away in storage, so like many of the "Dummies" books, this seems to be the practical knowledge most of us actually need.
Robert's Rules for Dummies.......2007-03-08
Great way to get a fast handle on chairing meetings. The meeting I chaired after reading this book went so much smoother than the previous meetings. Would recommend this book for any new board member. Also provides a quick reference for seldom used procedural issues that arrise.
This book is a must have for presiding officers!.......2007-02-14
This book can easily be read cover to cover in one sitting, then can be used as a reference book for questions pertaining to parlimentary procedure. I especially appreciate the author's understanding of the psychology of presiding, not just the Rules.

so easy to use.......2007-03-24
Love this book and it is so easy to use... If your new to dreamweaver 8 this is a nice tool to help you learn.. much easier to use than some of the other tools out there..
my top pick among the intro books.......2007-03-23
Having just started a new job in which I need to begin developing web-based training very soon, I reserved every book I could on Dreamweaver through our local libraries. This one is my favorite.
I think one reviewer complained about the 'cutsey' stuff, and let me say that this is not your typical "Dummies" book - I was almost to page 50 before I came across one comment about her spouse, and I think there was one more such comment later on. I will also say that as a trainer, instructional developer, technical writer, and journalist, I tend to judge computer books with a critical eye (and I read a LOT of them).
I found the pace of this one to be just right -- I am rather impatient and I didn't have a lot of time to waste, so I didn't want something that proceeded slowly, but I was also new to Dreamweaver, so I didn't want something that proceeded at a breakneck pace.
This book does what it claims to do. It doesn't claim to be a Dreamweaver book for those who are already power users. It does not propose to be an exhaustive reference, as perhaps does the other Dummies title that describes itself as being nine books in one. The all-in-one is a nice enough book, but I didn't have time to read 900 pages before beginning to develop my projects. Speaking of 900-page books, I chose this book over Dreamweaver 8: The Missing Manual, because the latter one, albeit much larger, did not present the information as concisely, and I found myself reading three paragraphs to get the amount of content that I could get from one paragraph of this author's book.
This book does, in its 400 or so pages, give a reasonably good foundation from which one can learn more about advanced topics, if desired. In that sense, it gave me a good road map of the territory ahead, such that I can converse intelligently with those in my office who are way beyond my level, and it positions me to be a good consumer of more advanced books/material. This author's book more fully fleshed out the topics that I needed to know about than did How To Do Everything with Dreamweaver 8. Again, that was not a bad book, and in fact the screen shots of the toolboxes and menus and such were more clearly done in How To Do Everything with Dreamweaver 8. I did learn some new things from it. But overall, I got more bang for my buck from Warner's book.
This book differs from the Dreamweaver Design and Construction book -- which gets good reviews -- in that it does not focus (nor propose to focus) on the principles of designing a website. This book's agenda is to teach the reader how to use Dreamweaver.
This book does not propose to be a tutorial, as does Dreamweaver 8 Hands on Training, so it is a matter of being aware of the way that you learn best, and picking a book that fits with your learning style.
Speaking of, I am a visual learner, so I used this book in tandem with "Teach Yourself Visually Dreamweaver 8" -- and some time later realized that both were written by the same author. "Teach Yourself Visually Dreamweaver 8" is a good companion because it gives an overview of the concepts, such that I already had a mental framework for what I would learn. I preferred it over the Dreamweaver 8 Visual Encyclopedia, which uses a typeface and layout that I found more difficult to follow.
I also own the Quickstart guide for Dreamweaver 8, which I keep beside me at work and consult when I need to see how to complete a specific task. The QuickStart guide is great for this purpose, but it is not, in my opinion, as good as Warner's book if a beginner wants to sit down and read a narrative about how to use the program. The QuickStart guide would move too quickly for that purpose.
Warner's book shows sensitivity to the learners in that it does not use terms that haven't yet been explained; it sequences the topics well; and I haven't found any errors in the book. It has not in any sense been a frustrating or incomplete read. The writing is clean and effective and doesn't draw attention to itself. It has a rather conversational tone without being inefficient.
I think she did a great job with it and I will be on the lookout for her name when I look for books on other computer topics.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful Book........2007-08-09
Very nice step by step. A little too much detail someitmes, but helps you know what you need to about the program and how the total project fits together.
A Great Way to Get Started.......2007-03-08
Project management on even a fairly large project is both important and difficult to accomplish without computer assistance. Microsoft Project is a full fledged project management system that is fully integrated into the Microsoft Office environment. This means that the screen looks a lot like any other Office application. There are several versions of Project, and these are described to assist in deciding what to buy.
Finally you get to the point where you have Project on your system and have gotten it started. This is a 'For Dummies' book. And it makes the assumption that you aren't dump, that you have some idea about how to use a computer and have just been assigned the task of managing a project. It begins with defining things like What Is Project Management? Then it leads you through how Project 2007 can help you keep track of things.
Of all the books I've seen, this is the one I'd recomment for the beginning user. There are some more complex reference books for advanced users, but this is the place to start. Later, if PM turns you on, you can go on to certification, the official domumentation, and so on.
A final strong reason for this book is the CD. It contains an awful lot of other software that you may find helpful for us in conjunction with Microsoft Project. Many of these are free, open source programs, but here they all are, and they all work.
Just What I Needed To Get Up to Speed.......2006-12-31
I started a new job last month and my employer requires me to use Microsoft Project. I grabbed this book and sat down with it over a weekend. By Monday morning I was able to get into the software, start to build a project, and ask intelligent questions about Project of my boss. I'm sure I'll take advantage of all the great advice about keeping my project in line as I get deeper into my projects at work over the next few months. Great way to get going fast!
Great Way to Get Started with Project.......2006-12-30
This book is a great help to anybody who has to get up to speed with Project quickly. It provides a good foundation in project management basics, and offers the best way to implement your project using the software. I especially liked the advice for fine-tuning your project plan and then making adjustments to help stay on track as your project goes forward. I'd definitely recommend this to newcomers to Project or those who want to get into Project 2007 features quickly.

Customer Reviews:
Could have been so much better.......2007-05-28
I debated if to give this two or three stars, and I'm giving it two simply because I expect better from the For Dummies series of book.
First for the good stuff. I'm not sure you can get another book for the TI-89 for this price that will help you get started with the calculator. And I did learn stuff from the book. So if you just spent $150 to buy the calculator, and you need an inexpensive book to help you get started, this is the book.
But the bad is this. This book seems to me to have been a rushed job. I don't believe it was fully edited and critiqued before it was published. A lot of words were wasted repeating the same information over and over. In part three of the books it seemed like each chapter had a section on analyzing that was just like the section in the other chapters. Also, it seemed like the Zooming functions were re-explained a lot. In chapter seven, pictures are shown of graphs that where graphed on the calculator, but we are not give the formulas so we can graph it on our calculator (I used the formulas .5x-sin(x) and 1/3+x, but not exactly the same as what's used in the book), making it hard to follow alone with the instructions the book is giving. Much the same thing is done in chapter 20. I never did figure out chapter nine, but maybe I don't know enough about sequences.
Although the book was helpful, almost everything in it could have been explained better. And I wish more time would have been taken explaining the calculator itself, such as the differences between it and the other TI graphing calculators, some basics about how the applications that come with it work, and the meaning of the stuff you see when you use the 2nd & MEM keys. It's an okay starter book, but with a little more effort it could have much, much better.
Great manual for a few items, but missing a lot of information.......2007-03-03
I've been referring to this book regularly this semester since I recently started using the TI-89 (after using a TI-83+SE which is much more user friendly in my opinion). The parts that the author explains are very clear to understand and have been incredibly useful for me. Unfortunately I've already come across a lot of items that the author doesn't even mention. The author states toward the beginning of the book that there won't really be examples (as far as actual problems), and that is certainly true. I really would have liked to have a few examples, because some of the descriptions aren't too helpful without an example problem as a reference.
I still gave this book 4 stars because as far as I've been able to tell it is the best book out there for new users of the TI-89 and it certainly is easier to read and understand than the TI manual.
TI-89 Graphing Calculator for Dummies Review.......2007-01-04
The book is very concise and useful to understand the operations of the TI-89 calculator. There is not much information in the book about using the programing capabilities of the calculator but focuses most of its material on graphing.
A must have.......2007-01-04
If you have the TI-89, this is a must have, It's even helped during some tests when you're not sure how to solve problems.
Great TI-89 Manual.......2006-11-20
Very helpful in learning to use the Texas Intruments TI-89 Graphics calculator.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent companion.......2007-08-28
I found the book to be an excellent companion to the All-in-One by Shon Harris. Great for review of knowledge, or as a springboard into the material covered by the CBK.
A must for initial review.......2007-07-11
This book is a must for initial review. It covers all 10 areas of what needs to be studied in a clear and easy to understand way. It is not, however, detail enough to get you pass the test. You need something more detailed and more sample test questions.
Read This Book First.......2006-12-20
CISSP -- Certified Information Systems Security Professional
After reading this book you can't be considered a Dummy any more. Nor, however, do I think you'll be ready to call yourself a Professional.
The real strength of this book is that is is so simple, so well written, so complete in its subject coverage that giving it a quick read will give you the overall view of where you want to be when you are ready to call yourself a Professional. This book is also quite inexpensive when compared with some of the other exam preparation guides, and especially when compared to some of the classes offered either in person or on CD.
The book is organized about like you would expect with a separate chapter on each of the ten domains that are covered on the exam. There are a number of other useful security certifications such as those put out by Check Point, Cisco and others. He covers each of these to the point of at least letting you know what they are, i.e. the Check Point certifications cover the use of the Check Point Firewall products. The book is supplied with a CD that includes additional sample testing and other materials.
Recommendation: Read this book first for an overall view, then study one of the harder books.
A good first read, but you risk a false sense of security.......2006-03-05
I just recieved word last week I passed my CISSP exam, and I used this book among others to study for it. Let me give you a little background: I've been in IT for 10 years, starting as phone support, and moved on to desktop support, LAN administration, Exchange administrator, and eventually became my company's ISSO, then moved on to become an Information Assurance (Security) Engineer on one of our larger programs. Consequently, I had real world experience in many of the domains already.
Despite this, I think if I had only read this book, I would have failed the test. It is an excellent starter, since you can sit down and read it cover to cover in a day (plenty of white space, large font etc.) and you will get a good outline of the ten domains. But it just doesn't go into enough detail to keep you from getting tripped up on the test. A Section that is particularly lacking is cryptography. I don't think a single question on the test would have been answered from the knowlege I gained in that section.
The CD-Rom practice test is also too easy. I finished the book, took the 260 question test immediately afterwards, and scored ~95%. I then went online to the cccure.org website quizzer (which I highly recommend) and scored a 65% on their test!
Bottom line, if some one else has it, borrow it for your first read, it won't hurt and is a good way to get started, just don't stop there!
A book I highly reccomend is the CISSP prep guide by Krutz
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047126802X/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_6/103-8873493-6496642?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155
The advanced questions at the end of each chapter are excellent. Remember, (ISC)2 jealously guards the actual test questions, and changes them all the time, so brain dumps are a waste in my humble opinion, but this book closely matches the conceptual depth and breadth you need to be confident of passing the exam.
Nothing is wrong with the book - just not enough.......2006-02-10
I sat for and passed the CISSP test in January 2006. I used the following resources to help in passing the CISSP:
Shon Harris - All-in-One - 3rd Edition - 30%
Official ISC Guide to the CISSP Exam - 15%
Kurtz - CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition - 10%
CISSP for Dummies - 5%
Cccure.org - 25%
Other resources - 15%
"CISSP for Dummies" by Miller is a decent tool at preparing for the exam. I had thought this book would be a great cram book (if possible for the CISSP), where the `core' topics would be documented. After referencing the book, I do not feel this to be true and stopped referring to the book after the first few chapters. I did not find any typos or editorial mistakes, so while I do not think the book is necessarily wrong, I just do not feel it is nearly enough to pass the CISSP. Everything found in "CISSP for Dummies" can be found in other books/material. Please see my other reviews to see how I rated other books that I used to help pass the CISSP.
I give this book 3 pings out of 5:

Customer Reviews:
Doesn't cover the Mac Pro.......2007-07-22
I didn't purchase this book because when I looked through it in the bookstore, I was disappointed to read that the author doesn't cover Apple's fastest computer, the Mac Pro. Hopefully Baig or some other experience writer will write a book about the Mac Pro, simply because there's so much that can be done with that computer.
Good info on Macs.......2007-06-11
Helped a lot when I first got my Mac (Apple) computer.... Easy to find an answer when needed.
For the technologically challenged.......2007-04-28
I didn't purchase this book the first time around. Instead, I purchased Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, because that was exactly what I was doing. When it arrived I dove in, thinking it would answer all my questions. WHOA! Way over my head! I'm sure the book is brilliant but unfortunately, I'm not! I gave it to my husband and had him read it instead. I immediately ordered the more lowly rated Mac for Dummies and gave a big sigh of relief upon reading a few pages in it. Now this was something I could understand. My point is, if you're like me and do well negotiating the web, sending emails and doing a little word processing this book is for you. All I want to know is how the heck to I put someone's email address in my new address book. The other day I got fed up with that little bar that's at the bottom of my screen when I go into Safari - the one with all the icons. I was also frustrated because I couldn't get the whole page to take up the entire screen. Guess what - a little reading in my Mac for Dummies and I not only had that little bar off to the side of the screen, but I figured out how to keep it hidden so that it would pop out only when I needed it! I also figured out how to make the web page take up the whole screen. Print on the screen to small? I enlarged it! This may sound like small stuff to you techies out there, but to a middle aged mom who is completely befuddled by this stuff it was a minor miracle! I had used my PC for so many years that small stuff like this became easy for me. All of a sudden everything was difficult. So for those of you out there who are reading this and going "yeah, I'm right with you", grab this book when you buy your new Mac. For the rest of you, grab Switching to the Mac. They're both excellent books, depending upon your abilities.
Excellent for "switchers" and those new to computing.......2007-02-28
For years I was exclusively a Windows user, but recently I bought a new MacBook Pro. When one is steeped in the terms and methods of another computer operating system, it's not an altogether easy task to relearn it all overnight. I got another book, "Switching to the Mac," and good as it is I found it a bit too deep and convoluted for where I was at the moment. Then I picked up "Macs for Dummies." The more I read it the more I liked it. Sure, there's a bit of the cute and trite - that's the style that has made this line of books famous and hugely successful after all - but nicely folded into the mix is an easily understood set of descriptions that walks one through how to use a Mac, from the most basic nuts and bolts like turning it on and off, to managing the core (core, get it?) functions of the operating system, and using the iLife serious of "lifestyle" programs. Then it's on to broader discussions of internet communication concepts, networking, dealing with problems, and a nice overview of ten indispensable Mac web sites.
The result is the best "Dummies" book I know of. There are two sorts of persons I think would benefit most from this book: someone totally new to computing (young or old) whose first computer is a Mac; and someone (like me) who has years of experience with PCs and needs a simple but broad-ranging assist in making the platform transition. One other consideration; some learn better with pictures than words. While this book has lots of pictures, the real meat is in the text, so it serves better the person who absorbs information best in that fashion rather than one who is more "visually" oriented.
Not bad, especially for those converting from PC to Mac.......2007-01-13
Lots of good tips to get you started. Accurate and easy to follow. However, if you were as excited as I was to get your new iMac, chances are you figured out much of what this book has to offer during the time it took for Amazon to ship it. I found the Apple Training Series library to be more what I had in mind. Those books have color pics, and are better in a tutorial/training sense. But they're at least double the price. Am I glad I bought the Mac for Dummies anyway? Yes. Money well spent. Good luck. And CONGRATULATIONS ON GETTING A MAC!

Save your manual.......2007-08-30
And save your money as this book is poorly written and you will need your TI-84 manual to get started. Many of the commands given do not work. I stopped using it and went to an algebra text book and a web site. This is my first and last book of the "for dummies" series that I will waste my money on.
TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator for Dummies.......2007-02-26
It's for my calculator.. It's Handy !! I like it !! Thanks
Helpful and easy to read.......2007-02-12
This book is so helpful! I often find instruction manuals confusing and this book is so much easier to use than the manual that came with the calculator. It is easy to read and the format makes it simple to find the topic you need. I am taking introductory statistics and the stats info helped me study for my test. This book is excellant and very easy to use.
Good reference book to buy.......2006-08-12
It was better of course than the book that came with the calculator however it didn't give you all the infomation on how to use the inverses and the finance problems in the book, needs more samples of how to enter the problems.
This book is great for people who own a TI-84 Plus!.......2006-02-10
The TI-84 is a very hard calculator to use but with this book, you'll use this calculator like you had it since you was a baby! This book has complete details of all the TI-84 functions and the book explain how to use the functions in a very understanding way! Overall, I think that this is a great book and you should get it right now if you own a TI-84 Plus.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Hedge Fund Managers Too!.......2007-08-27
Hedge Funds for Dummies seeks to create a "reference for the rest of us" on how to use hedge funds to improve portfolio performance.
However, as a founder of a Private Investment Fund, this book really makes one think about all of the elements that you need to consider when potential investors are kicking your fund's tires.
My copy is dog-eared and has writing throughout the margins.
Regardless of whether you are thinking of starting a fund or thinking about investing in a fund, this book will be an excellent resource.
Credible Look at Basics of Hedge Funds.......2007-03-23
This book covers all the bases that an investor should consider before deciding to invest. They are too numerous to mention here, but in this 342-page primer, the author clearly explains the critical information necessary to make an informed decision as to whether a hedge fund is for you.
Hedge funds have been in the news lately, but not necessarily for their supposed out performance characteristics. Nine hedge funds (for example, Amaranth Advisors) have closed their doors in the past year, some because of outsized bets by traders on the wrong side of the markets they were trading. This is not the way to increase performance. In 1998, Long-Term Capital Management blew up, even with two Noble-prize winning economists on the staff. All hedge funds are not alike and there risks that need to be taken into account.
Hedge fund assets are estimated to be $1.2 trillion with over 9000 funds in existence. For most investors, due to the stringent entry requirements, hedge funds are not an option. Wealthy individuals who may be interested in hedge funds are urged to read this book (as well as others interested in learning about the subject) before placing their hard-earned money at risk. This suggestion may save them millions of dollars in potential losses, if they decide not to invest in certain hedge funds because of their due diligence learned from this book.
Additionally, the author provides insight on setting up your own hedge fund portfolio by selecting different categories of investments. Surprisingly though, she spends a miniscule amount of time discussing exchange traded funds (ETFs) to build the hedge fund portfolio. Now that there over 425 ETFs offering all types of investment alternatives, this is one area that deserves more attention.
Overall, the author provides a credible and detailed look at the hedge fund industry. An investor needs to know the basics before committing any money to these funds. This book provides useful information to help in making the decision to invest in hedge funds.
Fasten Your Seat Belts.......2007-02-13
Wow! This book sets a new standard for the "...For Dummies" series. It goes well beyond what you would expect from a book with such a whimsical title. Ann Logue is smart, her research is solid, and her writing is perfectly colloquial. No BS, no jargon. If you don't have an MBA, or if you earned it before hedge funds entered the scene, take Logue's corporate finance tutorial, meaning start from the beginning. If you don't need the background, then jump to Part III, beginning on page 165, dealing with hedge fund strategies. This book covers the history of hedge funds, their regulatory aspects, asset allocation, risk management, the Greeks, transparency, due diligence, and perhaps the most important aspect, where does the alpha come from? Read it for fun; read it for self-defense, or prep yourself for an interview, but do read it.
A comprehensive introduction to hedge funds.......2006-12-06
I hate to admit but this book is actually pretty good. Being a financial professional as well as marginally positively biased towards the hedge fund industry, the publication of this book initially caused laughter as well as sadness in the industry. The title alone is cause for laughter: Hedge Funds for Dummies. Hilarious. It is also sad: The industry becoming mainstream so fast is somewhat sad in a sense that it loses some of its exclusivity.
The target audience is not, as the title rhetorically suggests, idiots but reasonably educated and curious people (essentially people who buy books for the purpose of acquiring knowledge and insight rather than public display). The reason for this book getting five stars is the following: Most books on hedge funds are written either by academics or practitioners. The books written by academics are quite often perceived as hoax by the investment profession because the content is abstract and dogmatic, i.e., a desperate attempt to fit the hedge fund phenomena into the corset of old paradigms such as "relative return investing" and EMH and CAPM whereas it too often transpires that the authors never have come even close to visiting or experiencing the dynamics of a trading floor in the real world. Books by practitioners on the hand often lack rigor and occasionally lack a sense for understanding the other side, i.e., the investors and their needs, requirements and constraints. Hedge Fund for Dummies finds an attractive balance. A balance between explaining or highlighting the theory including where the theory breaks down or is a poor description of investment reality on one hand and having the investor in mind on the other.
In addition, we all would seriously be better off if this book were required reading for US Congress.

Customer Reviews:
Gem, in simple terms........2003-10-14
I revisited this book after about a year, and took the time to really read the first 100 pages. In particular, the author's introduction to OOP via C# classes as data structures first, and as more complex objects containing data and methods second, helped me really understand this concept --- maybe for the first time.
His example programs are very clever and deceptively simple at first glance. I think the most valuable aspect to his perspective is he obviously has a talent for teaching the "old school" imperative coders, that need hand holding with the new object paradigm. (Like me)
I really liked Randy's other book on C++, although the "C++ for Dummies" moniker is a riot.
There aren't any dummies doing C++, of that you can rest assured!
books.......2003-05-28
I bought "C# for Dummies" for myself and "C# and Game Programming" for my son.
Good book for VB programmers.......2003-02-19
Although the "Dummies" title implies a "Beginner" book, this book falls into the "Beginner to Intermediate Developer" range. This is a good book for Visual Basic developers who want to make the conversion to C# or for the beginner. Like all Dummies series, there are ample examples and the author does a great job of explaining the C# language. Windows forms are covered in Chapter 17 and 18 but there is no discussion about Web development or using C# with Active Server Pages (ASP).
Starting in Chapter 6 (Collecting Data - The Class and the Array) there are several really annoying errors, for example, on page 105 the author uses "for (int i = 0; i
< 11; i++)" to iterate thru a 10 element array. In the section below this (Array bounds checking), the author uses exactly the same code and says this will fail. The first code should be "for (int i = 0; i
< 10; i++)". These errors are scattered through out the book. Still this is a good book and I would highly recommend it.
INCREDIBLE COLLECTION OF C# code examples.......2002-01-09
This book is a MUST for absolute beginners. It contains more code examples than any of the other ten C# books combined (I own the O'Reilly and Wrox books also). Furthermore, the Visual Studio IDE bonus chapter (on the CD in pdf format) is worth the price of the book itself. The principle strengths of this book are the disciplined coding techniques modeled by the author, the excellent inline documentation techniques modeled by the author and how this book is strictly focused on C# basics (not ASP.NET, Web Services, ADO.NET, etc.). Get this book if you want to learn C# well in a very short time.
Good Book for VB Migrators.......2001-12-20
C# For Dummies claims to take novice programmers into the world of C#. That's probably a stretch--if you haven't programmed before, I suspect you would have a tough time keeping up. But as an experienced VB programmer moving to C#, I have found it quite helpful. Easy, breezy read, with a focus on the language itself (rather than .Net framework classes or Visual Studio). Most programs are console apps, although the book walks the reader through creation of a Windows app. Only negatives: Code on CD doesn't always match up with cook listings (as at p. 261). Also, like most Dummies books, it's a bit light on learning exercises for the reader. I'm using the book as a general introduction to the language, before I dig into more detailed texts.
