Very Good Overview.......2004-09-22
Gives a good overview of PeopleSoft. I read this in just a few days and was up and running with the basics. It's a small and easy to read book. Step by step instruction with lots of visuals/screenshots. A little outdated but the core basics are the same. I would highly recommend this for someone new to PeopleSoft or who is interviewing for a PeopleSoft related position. It will give you just the facts you need to impress your boss!
If PeopleSoft were this easy, we would be out of a job.......1999-10-22
I actually found this book to be quite simple and straight forward. Although, it really is not for the ultra-techinical person, it is a great overview of PeopleSoft and HRMS in particular. I found its chapters on using the Query tool to be excellent for a beginner and a great refresher for an experienced PeopleSoft user. If you are looking for a book that will prepare you for class and as a quick reference, this is more than adequate, but if you are looking for a book that is going to teach you the intricate workings of PeopleSoft, this is not it. At my current place of employment, this is a hot book because the chapters are straight forward, short, and written in a very simple style. The only reason why this book will not get five stars is because it really does not delve into other reporting tools used with PeopleSoft, particularly SQR. Compared to other books on the market, if you were introducing someone to 'What is PeopleSoft' this would be the book I would give them first!

Book Description
The biggest development in Microsoft Windows in the last few years is the introduction of Windows NT application servers. NT application-servers are a newer breed and few NT programmers have any expertise in developing application servers. This book explains NT application servers as implemented using NT and Windows 2000 services.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book. highly recommended.......2002-02-09
i highly recommend this book for those of you who stroll underneath the covers of nt. this was one of the few books that actually explained, with simplistic but detailed enough code examples about topics that are taboo to most authors. Areas such as the eventlog, services, the underpinnings of programmatic security. Enough information is provided so as not to overwhelm, yet stir up enough new thoughts to begin experimenting on your own. *****
a bonus * to the author for being available to answer email questions related to the text.
I like this book.......2002-02-07
I have a doubt regarding nt services. From reading the book I remove any doubts.
Not worth the price.......2001-12-30
This book is very thin on content and provides only a shallow overview of NT service programming. It tries to cover far too much territory in too few pages.
The author's C++ "framework" class for NT services makes some extremely naive assumptions, particulary with regard to processing SCM control messages. (See John Bell's article in the August 1998 C/C++ User's Journal for a much better C++ service framework.)
This book is not a good place to learn about service programming from scratch; and if you already know the basics, this book has nothing new to tell you.
Should be titled Programming Windows(tm) Services in C++.......2001-12-11
This book should have been titled "Programming Windows(tm) Services: Implementing Application Servers IN C++" I am a Delphi programmer and was misled into thinking that this book would help me in Delphi. I was disappointed to find one and a half snippets of Delphi code with little to no explanation.
Author Helps.......2001-05-24
After buying this book I had questions more indepth then the book offered. So I sent emails to the author and he help me. I really appreciate that.

Great framework.......2007-02-10
If you are experienced in IT governance and processes, this book is a great reference. This is a great tool when combined with other frameworks such as CMM, ITIL, and COBIT.
Really Good Book!.......2001-08-25
This book is really good.It gives clear picture of software developement methdologies. I really enjoyed reading this book. This will be my one of the favorite books.
Build Real-World Enterprise Systems.......2000-02-28
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Roger Fournier's book. I am a voracious reader with many books on Client-Server, Web technology, systems development, etc.; however, Mr. Fournier's methodology is a welcome addition to my library. This may be the most practical book that I have seen for systematically approaching the development of complex systems. I plan on incorporating much of his methodology and ideas in my future projects. I would recommend it for anyone interested in learning about client-server or web technology and it is a great reference for professionals involved in project development (both large and small).
I am encouraged by the books honesty in stressing that building large systems is hard work. Too often the literature touts "sure-fire" success if you follow a particular "cook book" sequence or employ specific technology. As anyone in the business knows, good preparation, realistic goals, teamwork and attention to detail are more important than choosing the latest "hot" technology. The book walks through the stages of a projects life cycle and provides much "food for thought" in how to get each stage right. But it never deceives one into thinking the process is easy and it never implies that the proposed methods are the only logical approach to take.
Although the title focuses on C/S and Web Application development, the methodology presented has a much broader application. It provides an excellent framework for development of any complex system. The book is well written. It provides broad coverage from requirements discovery through project deployment. The book contains so much information that the reader may want to focus on specific areas of high personal interest at first- such as Web architecture or systems analysis. Fortunately, Mr. Fournier's style is such that you can concentrate on the chapters that are most relevant to your needs first and later read the other sections without a significant loss of continuity.
As an Enterprise Architect, I have found the book very helpful. It contains useful information for project managers, enterprise and system architects, analysts, developers and test engineers. Without going into details I'll say that the tables, checklists and web-references presented throughout the book have been very useful.
I believe the survey, analysis and joint facilitated session chapters are well presented and offer a lot of information on project definition and scoping. They certainly make clear the importance of up-front planning to a projects success. For my purposes, the C/S and Web Architecture chapter was of high interest and was well presented. I was glad to see a chapter devoted to software re-use. However, I would like to see this chapter expanded to include more information on infrastructure, middleware and components. I would recommend anyone interested in the book to quickly scan the table of contents to see the wide range of information that can be found.
Mr. Fournier mentions that there might be a follow-up book focusing on the project management aspects of building complex systems. I sincerely hope he writes this.
Excelente.......1999-05-08
Excelente para el desarrollo de grandes proyectos tanto en Web como de todo tipo de sistemas.
Excellent book for practitioners!!.......1999-01-12
This book covers the subject matter extremely well and integrates all the good practices for WEB application development.

Customer Reviews:
More in-depth than the title suggests.......2002-09-24
This is an excellent book. I was reluctant to even look at this book, since the word "beginner" was in the title, but given that there are few BizTalk books out there, I gave it a shot. I was very impressed by the depth of content, going much deeper and with much more explanation than the MS docs. If you're a newbie (or even intermediate) to BizTalk, definitely consider this book. It will help you not only to get started up and running, but it will give you a solid foundation as well.
Great Introduction to BizTalk.......2002-03-01
This book provides a great introduction to BizTalk. The author puts the software into its proper context, provides a solid introduction to its architecture, and gives just enough "how-to" to get started.
Reading this book first will give you what you need to approach more in-depth material, e.g. Microsoft Press's BizTalk Server 2000 Documented.
Good architectural overview.......2001-08-28
Up front, I should state that I have been working w/BizTalk for the last six months. To say that the documentation currently available on BizTalk is lacking is an understatement. What I particularly like about this book is the fact that several chapters are devoted to the architectural underpinnings of BizTalk (for example, the author describes the way that servers are broken out and what the different databases contain, down to the objects in the databases). He also clearly explains the various concepts within BizTalk such as ports, messaging ports etc. All in all, this book is the best one currently available if you are interested in the architectural and development aspects of BizTalk and don't want to plough through the 1500-page Microsoft tome.
Not for beginners.......2001-08-16
If you are looking for a beginners book on BizTalk that will take you through lessons on how to use BizTalk Server 2000, this isn't the book. The first few chapters are on EDI and SOAP. The discussion on SOAP is scatter brained and it takes too long to get into the Basics of BizTalk. When it does get into the basics there just isn't enough there. I have seen better guides to using BizTalk.

Chapters of the module also include several real life examples and case studies to highlight practical applications.
Customer Reviews:
Ideal book to understanding the Internet and IP networks.......2003-06-11
What is the Internet? How does it work? Why is it so important? These questions can be very confusing to someone without a computer science or IT background. After reading this Networks module, I feel I finally have a very good understanding of the power of the IP networks. I highly recommend this module to anyone with an iota of curiosity about the Internet.
Although it's not breezy reading, even as a business school student I had little trouble with the technical explanations. Dr. Umar uses real-world examples. In fact, the information is so practical that now I know the actual meaning behind terms such as Ethernet, LAN's, WAN's, MAN's, NIC, RJ45, cable modems, DSL, T1, T3, optical fiber, ATM Frame relay, etc. The module also covers Voice Over IP and the inevitable convergence of voice and data - no wonder phone companies are running scared. In addition, wireless technologies, cellular phones and 3G are also addressed.
I was mostly interested in distributed networks but the module also covered IBM's SNA and token ring networks reflecting Dr. Umar's experience with Big Blue's "big iron" mainframes. Nonetheless, it was still valuable information.

Customer Reviews:
The Best of the Best.......2003-03-01
This book provides a great overview of some very complex technology. I think the author does a great job in putting this technology in terms that one can understand and apply in his or her own enterprise.
This book covers the entire scope of client/server including explaining the application of CASE technology and how to test a client/server system.
If client/server is in your future, this one has to be on your shelf.
Waste of time and money.......2002-12-15
An incoherent collection of superficial technical jargon.
If you are looking for guidance in client/server or intranet development there will be nothing of value in this book.
This guide is lost........2002-03-04
I'm a programmer, and I bought this book hoping to learn something that I could use. After reading through this book, I realize that I'm no better off...
The author attempts to sound intelligent by using all the buzz-words he can muster, as if his intended audience is incompetent software managers who lust for the latest technical jargon.
I didn't actually read every word in this book. I read the first 7 chapters and was shocked to find that I was flipping pages faster and faster. I was reading the paragraph headers and maybe a paragraph here and there. Page after page I began to feel swindled. Its hard not to. Every topic that the author describes seems like an explanation of the obvious. And then he moves on to describe some other technology. I found myself thinking, ... Is there any *real* information in here?'
I was looking for detailed information about client/server application development, and I never found it. The author covers so many different technologies in the client/server world (database servers, client development tools, third generation client development tools, specialized development tools, multi-platform development tools, smalltalk tools, file-oriented DB tools, reporting tools, CASE tools) that I became lost in the sea (ocean) of sheer possibility. The discussion of the tools was shallow and cliche and lasted from chapter 8 through chapter 15. Thats over 150 pages - roughly 1/3 of the book.
That's not to say that the remaining 2/3 are particularly useful either. After a while, the chapters start looking the same.
For the programmers who actually have to implement client/server systems: this book is little more than a product/tool catalog.
For the managers: this book is a must have if you want to impress upper-management with your new client/server vocabulary.
...
This is a real Must have Book.......2000-04-05
If you are going to implement a Client/Server Solution, this book realy can guide you. You will see from devolpent tools to aplication servers and will have a very good explanation about the right solution to your problem.
Best overview of new client/server technologies I've seen........1998-07-21
Working in one shop for a long time makes developers and system administrators pretty dependant on one brand and strategy for performing client/server data access tasks. David Linthicum's overview helps you "step out of the box" and look at new strategies and directions in client/server technology.
Average customer rating:
- Excellent book, good for both beginners and experts

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, good for both beginners and experts.......1999-02-03
This book provides a good introduction to OWAS 3.0 and explains how to configure and use the product in a very clear and concise manner. It even goes beyond the introductory level and explains in great detail how to use PL/SQL cartridge which is in my opinion the single most useful part of OWAS 3.0.It was the first book available on the market and after spending an afternoon with the book, I was able to install OWAS 3.0.2 on my company's SUN UE3000 and port the application written in PL/SQL for WebServer 2.1. I can only wholeheartedly recommend the book.

Excellent! Gets you going faster than Oracle Press books........1999-01-28
What a life saver! A must-have for anyone learning App Server. Far more useful than Oracle Press' offerings, this book got me inside the architecture and up and running with a minimum of fluff, (something I really appreciate in these days of 2,000+ page books on basic HTML) and has been extraordinarily helpful in getting my project off the ground.
The books provides bug warnings, work-arounds, example applications (with documented source listings & explanations), pitfalls to avoid, overall great insight, and all source on CD-ROM.
I read Oracle's on-line docs and the Oracle App Server Handbook (which is good, but it's best as a package/procedure reference, as far as teaching, it's awful), both of which were essentially useless for getting a decent education about the product.
I recommend this book as necessary equipment to anyone who has anything to do with App Server 3.
Excellent Technical reference and guide.......1998-07-16
This book has done a great job in providing solid foundation to Oracle Web Application Server 3 with practical code examples. This is a great reading for all the developers who want to lead the emerging NC market and N-tier application development.
A complete waste........1998-06-28
1/3 the book is wasted with printed code listing!! If you are going to bother listing the code at least include some comments with it. The examples did not include any installation instructions so if you want to use it to learn, it is almost impossible. You might as well already be an Oracle Application Server expert.
