5 out of 5 stars Critical reference for eDirectory administrators.......2004-07-20

One of the greatest things about Novell is the eDirectory and how beautifully it ties all the rights, security, users, resources, and everything else into an easy to use interface. With everything contained in this one database it also becomes critical that it always be in good health.

"Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting eDirectory" is the definitive guide to fixing and maintaining the eDirectory. The book does assume the reader knows the basics of eDirectory and so does not cover things like installation, adding users, setting up printing, etc. It is not a book about setting up eDirectory but about troubleshooting and maintaining it.

The authors delved deep into the eDirectory structure and syntax as they explain exactly how it works, LDAP extensions supported, as well as the error codes and what they mean. They also detail how to understand the results from the diagnosing and repairing tools that come with Novell such as DSRepair, DSTrace, DSBrowse, and iMonitor. With complete information on objects, classes, and attributes this is an exhaustive volume for a through understanding of the eDirectory.

"Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting eDirectory" should be on the bookshelf of every Novell administrator or anyone who wants to program, read, or otherwise access the eDirectory in a direct manner. For the power users of the eDirectory this should be considered a required reference to be kept close at hand.

4 out of 5 stars A Unique approach.......2007-06-02

I found this book very well written, and a different approach to a poorly documented topic in the IT world. The book is properly, very thorough, and best I can tell somewhat dated as it discusses a lot of Token Ring, Novell IPX, Netbios, Netbeui, Win95, 98, NT4 topics. It covered many items I had long forgotten about, but are still relevant and important. What I would love to see, is an updated version of this book, that drops IPX, Token Ring, and all the outdated topics, and concentrates almost exclusively on IP. I would greatly appreciate a concentration on real packet captures and decoding longer streams. Ideally, the book would either come with a cd, or a web site link to captures. Reading about Network Analysis is one thing, but what is most helpful for some of us, is a hands on, following along with the book, to try it first hand.
Regardless, the book is first rate. It's isn't a Laura Chappell style book if that is what you are hoping for. It is more of a, here's what you learned years ago, and now, why it matters. When I first learned the OSI 7 layer model etc, I had no clue how it applied in the real world, now that I do, this book helps bring a deeper understanding to it.
Great job!

5 out of 5 stars Don't let it's tiny size fool ya!!.......2001-03-31

Impressive! Mr. Haugdahl's explanation of the various OSI layers is killer enough. Got too deep on certain topics; but then again, you wouldn't want someone preaching complete network analysis to skimp on details now, would you? Great reads on the use of NA's Sniffer and MS' Network Monitor tools, as well as full illustrated details on the DOs and DON'Ts of network design. Awesome book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Casts new light on network traffic; great for IDS operators.......2000-12-18

I am an ex-Air Force officer with 2+ years of hands-on intrusion detection experience, and I rate books on how well they deliver technical content to front-line operators. Scott's book is absolutely first-rate, written in a clear, friendly style that keeps the reader's attention. Backing up the technical content, the book offers plenty of history and answers to the "why?" questions asked when learning network protocols. For example, why do various Ethernet frame formats exist (Ethernet/DIX/Ethernet II vs. IEEE 802.3 w/LLC Header vs. IEEE 802.3 w/LLC SNAP extension)? Short answer -- blame IBM! Long answer -- read pages 82-86.

The logically arranged material makes Scott's book a powerful learning tool. After introducing protocol analysis in chapter 1, he devotes a full chapter to each of the seven layers of the OSI model. (No, he doesn't skip the session and presentation layers!) By taking a layered approach, Scott compares same-layer protocols and makes each understandable in context (i.e., DNS vs. NetBIOS vs. Netware SAP, all at layer 5 -- somewhat controversially; DNS at layer 5?) Chapter 9 finishes with advice on measuring latency and throughput. I learned something new about protocols at each layer, even after reading many authoritative TCP/IP volumes. For example, Scott's explanation of NetBIOS as a session protocol and Server Message Block (SMB) as an application protocol finally made it clear how these standards interact on Windows networks. The text is backed up by numerous screen captures of protocol decodes, adding to the learning value.

....The few typos or mistakenly omitted material do not detract from the book's overall message. If you've read Richard Stevens, Eric Hall, etc., and you think you've run out of resources for understanding network traffic, give Scott's book a try. You'll be informed and pleasantly surprised!

5 out of 5 stars Must-Have Network Analysis Tips.......2000-05-18

I've read numerous texts on Analysis and Troubleshooting Networks and this was the best. Taking years of experience and training and creating an outline for use in the field is what the Author's done. Having studied everything from the 802.3 standard itself to analysis handbooks by vendors and other authors, I found this to be concise and direct in application and use in the field. Being the Lead Analyst in a company with over 150 nations globally, this text will be valuable to our teams and is being disseminated as a field handbook for troubleshooting. It's a thorough review of protocols from physical through application layers over the majority of topologies extant in today's corporate infrastructures. My Thanks to the Author and those responsible for it's publication.

5 out of 5 stars Been there done that!.......2000-04-18

I just finished a course by the Author..... He really knowshis stuff! The book is a must have for any analyst! It walks you allthe way up the protocol stack and gives you real world examples. Thebook is also loaded with tips and problem solving ideas. END

5 out of 5 stars Great book on networking.......2006-10-09

This is a great book on networking with a lot of practical examples from the author's real life experience as a network engineer. The most important protocols are covered and explained in a way that is useful to someone who will actually have to use this knowledge in real life. Network analyzers and other network troubleshooting software tools are covered as well. The case studies are especially informative. Highly recommended in addition to TCP/IP Illustrated Vol.1 by Stevens.

4 out of 5 stars A network troubleshooting book to add to your collection.......2003-09-19

As a network security monitoring analyst, I like to read network troubleshooting books. They help me understand protocols I see on the wire, usually using case studies that are far more exciting than reading dry Request For Comment (RFC) documents. "TCP/IP Analysis and Troubleshooting Toolkit" (TAATT) isn't a "tool" book like Wiley's "Network Performance Open Source Toolkit." Rather, TAATT tries to explain the operations of many popular protocols. It does a fairly good job, and deserves a look.

TAATT's best material appears in ch. 8, "Microsoft-Related Protocols." While it makes little sense to include DHCP in this chapter (DHCP isn't used exclusively by Microsoft), the explanations of NetBIOS and Server Message Block (SMB) are helpful. The author explains the right aspects of NetBIOS and SMB and leaves the rest to other sources. (Two new books merit mention -- "Implementing CIFS: The Common Internet File System" and "The Official Samba 3 How-To and Reference Guide.") I also enjoyed case studies on firewalls offering artificial MAC addresses in ch. 3 and descriptions of "hidden master" DNS servers in ch. 7.

On the down side, the book has a handful of typos, plus a major error in ch. 7 regarding active vs. passive FTP modes. Page 271 states "the PASV command allows you to use what is called a passive file transfer, whereby the client initiates the port 20 connection to the server... In Frame 23, you see the server responding with the port and IP address pair for the client to use in making its port 20 connection to the server." This is false; the traffic trace shows the passive data transfer comes from port 2392 TCP on the client to port 4293 on the server. This may not seem like a big deal, but this is a book explaining how protocols work!

Overall, I liked TAATT. I found the Shockwave videos and tracefiles posted to the publisher's web site to be good references, although not all traces discussed in the book are reproduced on the Web. Along with Haugdahl's "Network Analysis and Troubleshooting" and Bardwell/Oppenheimer's "Troubleshooting Campus Networks," you should get a good sense of how many popular protocols operate. Note all three books tend to sidestep the use of port 445 TCP to offer SMB directly over TCP, concentrating on SMB over NetBIOS over port 139 TCP. Everyone still talks about primary and backup domain controllers, although Windows 2000 uses Active Directory with all domain controllers being "primaries." Windows 2000 prefers port 445 TCP, but no one shows traces of its activities. (Only Haugdahl has an excuse -- Addison Wesley published his book in 2000.)

This book is a great addition to any IT professionals library.

The author's knowledge of Network Monitor and its use to determine networking issues is amazing. The content in this book helped me understand the communication that takes place between network devices. Before reading Mr. Wilson's book I had no idea how to troubleshoot networking problems but afterwards I could sniff out problems like a seasoned bloodhound.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who feels lost in the fog but would like to find their way to network land.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-04-23

I bought this book to learn about Windows NT troubleshooting, but now I'm not sure I can trust anything it says about that area, since it has so many mistakes in the area that I do know, TCP/IP. Errors abound when discussing the IP header. The Type of Service discussion doesn't distinguish between the TOS field and the TOS bits, whose meaning are obsolete anyway. It doesn't discuss Precedence, which really is used, for exampe, VoIP uses precedence 5. IP source routing, which nobody uses anyway, is explained in a completely muddled way and the example shows someone setting that option when pinging from 10.0.0.60 to 10.0.0.10, which would be a really silly use of the option. The book also has lots of typos and badly-written sentences. Where was the editor? You would think Prentice Hall could hire editors. The SPX chapter starts with this, "The SPX/IPX protocol is a still a common occurrence on many corporate networks." The only mention of AppleTalk is in the list of Application-layer protocols where it has two entries that say this: AppleTalk and Appleshare apples networking protocol suite AFP apples protocol for remote file access AppleTalk shoudn't be in the list and couldn't they have used an editor who knew what Apple means in the computer industry?

5 out of 5 stars An MCSE's Best Friend!.......2001-03-31

I bought this book hoping that it would give me a clearer explanation on the usage of NetMon and other Windows-based packet sniffers; and needless to say I was not disappointed. I've read two other books on network analysis but instead came up even more confused than when I started - this book finally cleared what those other texts were trying to explain without giving me the usual technical runaround (usually a pretty good indication that they really don't know what they're talking about either)... Highly recommended, especially to all you MCSEs administering your own networks!

5 out of 5 stars A very respectable treatment.......2001-03-08

I have been reading ed wilson's comments in various MCSE news groups for over a year. He has often refered to using Microsofts Network Monitor to solve many of the problems refered to in the newsgroups. I am working on my MCSE and thought I would get his book. I am glad I did!! I have seen many questions on the exams (on the w2k track) to network monitor. I have now read his book, and am happy to say, I did not miss any questions (I hope) that were on network monitor. I have played with it at home quite a bit now, and find it to be a fascinating product. His book has taught me tons of stuff about networks, protocols, and all that. It is a GREAT book, and an wonderful tool. When I get a network admin job, I believe knowing how to do network monitoring, and how to determine network traffic will help me a whole lot.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book for network admins.......2003-06-17

My overall impression was that this is a great book. I felt that the first chapter was unnecessary detail, and sort of seemed like chest thumping to me. I find this book to be an excellent reference about just about all aspects of LAN communications. I was not impressed with the WAN protocols however. I sort of expected more of that, as you might find in a Campus network. I keep this book handy, and often find myself using it as a reference when I am unsure of a conclusion I have drawn. I recommend this book to anyone looking for reference material.

5 out of 5 stars A myth-shattering, authoritative and enlightening title.......2003-04-04

I'm sad I waited so long to read this excellent book. "Troubleshooting Campus Networks" (TCN) was published in Jul 2002, and it belongs on every network administrator's shelf -- now! This is the best networking book since Scott Haugdahl's "Network Analysis and Troubleshooting" and Eric Hall's "Internet Core Protocols." TCN will truly test your networking knowledge; you'll quickly validate the truth and discard the fiction.

So many books discuss networks, but somehow distort subtle points. Authors Oppenheimer and Bardwell know their material inside-out and explain key points in clear, concise prose. Ever hear of the "37% utilization rule for Ethernet?" It's false. Think that TCP sequence numbers count packets? Wrong -- they count bytes of data. And why are sequence numbers seemingly "off by one?" Look at the difference between ordinal and cardinal numbers, described in ch. 9.

TCN displays an uncanny ability to include just the information that is needed. "Reversible half-ASCII," which accounts for odd-looking NetBIOS traces, appears in ch. 12. The sections on Windows networking are first-rate, with helpful comparisons of NetBIOS with IPX, TCP, and NetBEUI. Even theoretical but damaging attack methods, like corrupting Hot Standby Router Protocol messages (ch. 8), are illuminated.

I have two complaints. I would have liked more attention paid to the mechanics of analyzing traffic, including the use of taps. Also, the Windows chapter seemed to end abruptly, just when the dynamics of Windows 2000 networking and port 445 should have appeared.

TCN is designed to educate protocol analysts. People with this skill set can administer LANs, analyzer network-based IDS traffic, and deploy network infrastructure. I thank the authors for their efforts and look forward to their next endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Will Become a Bestseller in its Field.......2003-03-14

I have had this book for about 10 days. It is excellent, destined to become a bestseller in its category. But this will not be surprising because Oppenheimer's previous book has received a stamp of approval in its category (Top Down Network Design, Cisco Press, ISBN: 1578700698). For those privileged to have Top Down Network Design, we know what I am talking about: a self-contained book that delivers beyond a Cisco Certification test.

It is in this very light that I rate Troubleshooting Campus Networks: it is a an extremely valuable reference book for network administrators, but it will also help you pass the Cisco CCNP Support exam.

Briefly going through the contents, Chapter 1 describes the book itself and its audience. Chapter 2 details formal network troubleshooting methods, including the Cisco Troubleshooting Method, protocol analysis, network traffic types and the various troubleshooting tools. Above all, it emphasizes the importance of proactive network management.

Chapter 3 provides in-depth knowledge on troubleshooting and Analyzing Ethernet Networks. And Chapter 4 will be even more appreciated: about 55 pages dedicated to troubleshooting and analyzing IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks. This chapter alone will be of great assistance to those preparing for Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA) from Planet3 Wireless, Inc. It provides an excellent introduction for those who want to know what Wireless LANs are all about.

Chapters 5 and 6 provide indepth knowledge on troubleshooting and analyzing the Spanning Tree Protocol and Virtual LANs respectively. Chapters 7 and 8 do the same for Campus IP Networks and Campus IP Routing Protocols.

What I have found to be of equally great value is Chapter 9, detailing TCP, UDP, and Upper Layer protocols' troubleshooting and analysis. Here, one would find the answers to the questions he may have had about HTTP, FTP, SMPT protocol analysis and the like.

Chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13, respectively provide the skills needed for troubleshooting and analyzing Campus IPX Networks, AppleTalk Networks, Windows Networking and Wide Area Networks.

In all, this is a powerful tool from which you will not only find the answers to day-to-day networking issues, but will also empower you to become a better network administrator.

If you are in network administration, a networking professional generally or preparing for Cisco CCNP Support exam, this is the book!

5 out of 5 stars Fill in the holes of your swiss cheese knowledge base!.......2002-10-30

Many books have I read where authors speak of Ethernet or TCP/IP or other subjects. This book fills in the gaps without being too vendor biased. Cisco and WildPackets are excellent companies, but the book really focuses on enhancing your network to it's fullest. I learned that just because my network "works", there may be many things ready to break that had not been troubleshot before. Now I really feel able to properly "fix" my troubles and not just make my network magically work when there is trouble behind the scenes waiting for a Friday night to break.
The two authors have been in the industry since it's inception and bring a passion for networking to the table with a focus on teaching those of us who do not have 20+ years in the trenches.
This book is not only a reference book, but a well written, easy to read explanation of networking and troubleshooting. With real-life scenarios from the authors and practical situations played out. I felt as though I had a mentor walking me through the logical steps of analysis.
Buy reference books and keep them on your selves for when you need them. Buy this book, read it and keep it close because you will need it!

The equivalent of a five-day, hands-on WLAN Troubleshooting and Optimization seminar, the book includes a license for a 90-day fully functional LinkFerret Network Monitor, capture files and filters. A supported client adapter is isn't required for capture file analysis. It's also a great standalone text. Many prefer to read it cover-to-cover before performing the hands-on analysis. LinkFerret is live for 90-days from installation. You'll know every frame, field and bit in the 802.11bg specification; every frame flow sequence that reflects normal operation and those that indicate failures or performance issues. In 40 to 60 hours you'll emerge as a topnotch WLAN troubleshooter. This isn't one of those mile-wide, inch-deep lightweights that you wade through without splashing your cuffs. It's for serious people, with a serious commitment. It dives deep into the core of WLAN functionality and analysis, where the lifeguards don't venture and the concepts have sharp teeth.

1 out of 5 stars Tuca Software? LinkFerret Network Monitor?.......2007-09-18

I purchased this book and registered it on the companion website at dot11wlan. I did NOT receive an email specifying the download location
and password for the 90-day LinkFerret Network Monitor, and capture files. I clicked on the linkferret link from the companion website and was taken to a search portal. Did a search and then went to the tuca-software website and found it was also a search portal. So what happened to Tuca-Software, LinkFerret Network Monitor, and the promised capture files? "The entire book revolves around analyzing the capture files" (see the section "From the Publisher" under "Book Description" in the Editorial Reviews). Is Tuca-Software out of business and the LinkFerret Network Monitor a relic of the Internet past? You would never know from the companion website's Errata Information & Submission - there is nothing posted, which is surprising considering the number of errors detected in the first 2 chapters alone. Ultimately, the book appears to be almost worthless without the monitor/files promised. I sent it back to AMZ for a refund.

Just as an FYI to potential Amazon customers, beware. I purchased the book NEW from Amazon several weeks ago. When I tried to register for the 90 license, I was told that used books were not included. I contacted the author several times to explain that the book is brand new, and have never received a reply.

5 out of 5 stars WLAN Hands-On seminar disguised as an inexpensive paper-back book.......2006-01-13

As a CCSI (Cisco Certified Systems Instructor) at a world-wide technical seminars organization I'm always on the lookout for new, challenging in-depth books. I've worked with the author on several network consulting and seminar development projects. Having a minimal WLAN & Wi-Fi technical background I picked up the beta version 802.11 WLAN Hands-On Analysis with a bit of trepidation.

The 90-day LinkFerret network monitor and distribution files installed without any fuss. Chapters 1 and 2 focus on the detailed physical and media access control issues of wireless networks. I found the explanation and flowcharts on CSMA/CA especially fascinating as they revealed why performance analysis and optimization of WLAN is so critical.

Chapter 3 is a mind blower! How many frames do you think it takes for an 802.11g wireless node to exchange just one ping request and response with an 802.11b node in the same network? I will never again share files and printers from wireless computers because the performance issues are immense.

Chapter 4 tackles what is mistakenly considered as a rather mundane process, how a wireless station finds the access point. The capture file analysis and two mini-case studies on phantom protection and SSID broadcasting were truly insightful. The field and bit-level analysis is amazing. LinkFerret is simple to use and its features are readily accessible. The capture files and filters make the analysis text and screen shots really hit home.

Chapter 5 reveals the mysteries of Authentication and Association. Once again, the hands-on mini-case studies were insightful and relevant - especially the information about disassociation and deauthentication. One of the best aspects of the book is analyzing captures that show a working system and then transitioning to capture analysis of a broken system. I'm a troubleshooter at heart and that approach is what every WLAN administrator and technical support person needs.I was disappointed that the author didn't include a section on advanced authentication using 802.1x port-based control and RADIUS, but I understand that he's currently working on a follow-up text dedicated to 802.11i security analysis.

Chapter 6 addresses 802.11 fragmentation, RTS/CTS medium reservation and MTU. Using a capture, simple math and a little logic, the author proves that the IEEE definition of 802.11 maximum frame size has little to do with how the specification is implemented in production networks. This dovetails nicely with the performance and optimization theme of the chapter. I don't know of any other book that addresses the issues of why support of fragmentation and RTS/CTS medium reservation seems to have been dropped in most 802.11g products and why one would ever configure the RTS threshold on an access point. These are nuts and bolts issues that aren't addressed anywhere else.

Finally, Chapter 7 addresses the bottom line of how much TCP-based data can be pushed through various 802.11b and 802.11g connections and how invoking CTS-to-Self protection has a disastrous affect on throughput. The last section is on 802.11 power save mode. Although I initially considered this to be esoteric, it soon becomes obvious while analyzing the captures that understanding how the access points buffer broadcast, multicast and unicast data is an extremely important issue, not just for optimization but also to help understand why the frames received in a wireless network capture may be duplicated or out of order. Without this last section I can imagine many situations where the PS-mode frames would confuse the analysis and add an insurmountable layer of complexity.

Lastly I'd like to mention the end of chapter summaries and reviews, they are compressed and comprehensive; a great resource for renewing concepts that have slipped away and preparing for wireless certification. All-in-all the author delivers what he says, a text and hands-on WLAN troubleshooting and optimization seminar all rolled into a 300 page book. With the included network monitor and distribution files all you add is a Windows-based computer and about 35 to 40 hours of intensely focused work.

I read the beta version of the book and liked it so much that Byron asked me to write the book's forward. This is one of the clearest, most concise and ultimately practical technical books that I've ever had the pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Hands-On 802.11 Course on the Market!!!.......2006-01-11

I've taken several active directory design and security seminars from Byron when he was with Learning Tree International. When he invited me to work with him on the beta test of the WLAN analysis book and course last summer in Portland I jumped at the chance. The first time I analyzed the capture of a failed client authentication due to a misconfigured WEP key, I knew that I'd never attempt to troubleshoot or optimize a WLAN without a network monitor. I've applied the knowledge from the book and capture files almost every week into my own consulting practice. The 90-day LinkFerret monitor program included with the book is clean and precise, as is all of Byron's explanations. The book has over 300 illustrations and screen shots of wireless capture files - the analysis is done frame-by-frame, field-by-field and bit-by-bit. I've outgrown LinkFerret and invested $1,000 in AiroPeek, but I would have been clueless without the tutorial nature of the book, capture files and filters. It's a lot of work and a lot of headaches, but if you want it badly enough, this is the book for you!

A final suggestion, I'd read the book completely before installing the bundled version of LinkFerret. Then you've got 90-days to perfect your capture file analysis skills before deciding which wireless network monitor program is best for your company and applications.
