Customer Reviews:
WAY TOO BRIEF!!!.......2007-10-05
WARNING! DO **NOT** USE THIS BOOK AS YOUR ONLY SOURCE FOR PASSING THE EXAM. I just took the exam last week and I was amazed how different the questions were on the VUE test. I was sadly mistaken relying only on this book for the exam and failed it by 20 points. I've learned a $200 lesson. The exam has been slightly modified since the date this book was written. There were hardly any questions on the exam covering Novell, Apple or ISDN. I saw very few questions covering the basics on RAID, OSI, and cable connectors/cable lengths. The new test weighed heavily on wireless implementation and network troubleshooting (about 50 of the 85 questions or so covered Network+ Objectives 3 and 4). This Passport book covers only the very basics of networking and does not go into much depth at all for troubleshooting issues. This is a great book only if you want a very brief review before taking the exam. Having some real world experience will also help you greatly. In addition, the questions in the chapter reviews are a joke compared to the real exam. I would strongly recommend getting another book like Tamara Dean's Network+ 2005 In Depth, Exam Prep, or Exam Cram. The questions from Exam Cram/Exam Prep will more closely resemble questions I've seen on the real exam. Tamara's book does a great job explaining troubleshooting fundamentals in detail. Again I stress, do not underestimate this Network+ exam.
This Book + Experience = You Pass CompTIA Network + Exam.......2007-07-27
This book was all I needed to refresh my knowledge base of modern computer networking and pass the CompTIA Network + exam. My IT work experience dates back to the 80's. Your results may vary, but all I needed was a refresher, and this book was perfect.
If you are new to IT, you will need a more comprehensive reference in addition to this study guide. This book has great value as a study guide for those with years of work experience or previous formal training. Easy to read, and key EXAM items are clearly marked for quick reference.
Great Resource.......2007-05-24
I was introduced to the Passport series while studying for my Network+ exam. Since then I have used the Passport series for 70-270, 70-290 and 70-218, all tests were passed with flying colors. I purchased numerous other books but always come back to the Passport series. Couldn't pass a test without them.
Excellent review for the Network+ exam.......2007-03-05
This book does what it is meant to do ... that is prepare you to take the CompTIA Network+ exam. It is not the text to learn everything you want to know about networking. There are other books that are much thicker and more comprehensive that will do that for you. As with the other Mike Meyers books, this is the "Reader's Digest" or "Cliff notes" version of the material. It is the last book you read before taking the exam. It pulls the material together very well, is excellently organized and easy to study. The self test on CD the best available and maps extremely well with the real test. After using Mike Meyers, the exam was a slam dunk.
Easy read.......2006-01-03
I used the Passport series books when preparing for A+, Network+, Security+ and Server+ and passed them all. I would recommend using this book along with another bigger textbook and some free online study guides. (Check out MCMCSE.com)
The one thing I like about this series is that it's very easy to read and will help you to understand things. If you have a backround in IT, then this is the book for you when preparing, but if your new and don't have much experience, some things might not make sense because things arn't explained in much detail.

Here's an eye-opener of a requirement!
In today's environment of emerging security threats, the U.S. Department of Defense has
recognized the critical need for highly-qualified, experienced information assurance
personnel.
To ensure a knowledgeable and skilled workforce the DoD has taken the necessary steps to
develop a directive that involves the credentialing and continuing education of all DoD
employees with privileged access to DoD information systems.
Specifically, the U.S. Department of Defense Directive 8570.1, signed in August of 2004,
requires every full- and part-time military service member, defense contractor, civilian and
foreign employee with privileged access to a DoD system, regardless of job series or
occupational specialty, to obtain a commercial certification credential that has been
accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
The draft manual, 8570.1M, specifies that the Department of Defense requires approximately
110,000 identified Information Assurance professionals to be certified within a five year time
period. The Defense Information Assurance Program office has divided its Information
Assurance workforce into six defined categories (see chart below). The manual also specifies
the types of commercial information assurance credentials that qualify for each of the defined
Great supplement to CISSP readings.......2007-03-09
I am using this book in addition to Shon Harris' CISSP book, and the ISC2 CISSP manual. This book works well for me as a high-level reference book and as an easy-to-carry/easy-to-read reference book when traveling. A must have book for those studying for their CISSP, but not the only book you'll need for certification. Amazon also had the best price and FAST delivery. I wouldn't purchase my books anywhere else.
Excellant prep resource for the CISSP .......2007-03-05
This book takes the original Shon Harris book, and explaines the 10 domains from a higher point of view. I would fully recommend reading this book, along with reading the Risk Management and Access Control section of the Shon Harris book.
The test questions are pretty simple, thus I do not recommend relying soley on them. [...] The test questions [...] are all written by CISSP's and closely resenble the questions that will be on the exam.
Good book to create a knowledge foundation.......2007-01-24
This book is older and I think it is a little outdated for current CISSP exam. That being said if you don't use this book as your sole source of CISSP studying , it is a great book. I found this book very informative for the very basics of the of security. Mike Meyers' Certification Passport CISSP is a great starting point to build your knowledge foundation. I would recommend The CISSP Prep Guide: Gold Edition.

Mike Meyers' CCNA Exam Passport is the sort of book you buy when you're studying for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification even though you feel like you learned everything you need to know at work. It'll help you solidify your knowledge in your areas of experience, and fill the gaps in your knowledge--provided they're not too big. You'll be disappointed if you're expecting to learn the entire CCNA knowledge base from this book--or any other--but then you deserve to be. This book, like the CCNA itself, is for experienced professionals for whom the CCNA exam is a proof of competency, not a goal unto itself.
The travel motif that permeates this book's design frequently seems cutesy and forced--explanations of terms appear in "Local Lingo" boxes; potential pitfalls are marked as "Travel Advisories"--but the information provided stands up under scrutiny. Myers has condensed the CCNA syllabus to its essence and organized it thoughtfully, and as a result he's provided his readers with a useful test-preparation tool. His listings of IOS input and output, combined with simple and uncluttered "hockey puck" diagrams that illustrate network configurations, get right to the point. --David Wall
Topics covered: The subjects Cisco Certified Network Associates are expected to understand, which include the fundamentals of Cisco's Internetwork Operating System (IOS) and the effects of its commands on 1900-series (and similar) routers. Other sections deal with addressing and routing protocols, and with how to configure local- and wide-area networks (LANs and WANs) on Cisco gear.

Pretty Darn Good*.......2004-02-01
Well first off i got the 640-607 edition which i bought from barnes and nobles bookshop, i have no idea why that edition doesn't appear on amazon.com but that's another story, anyhow at the time the 640-607 was the current ccna exam, that exam was retired on September 30, 2003, i'm currently scheduled for the 640-801, so why do i find it(640-607 edition) so darn good, because its quite useful for getting a rock solid understanding of certain concepts that you might be little fuzzy or confused about in the "CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, 4th Edition (640-801) by Todd Lammle" which should be your primary study anyhow. Personally i found the chapters on vlan, frame relay, ip access lists very, very useful in crystalizing those same concepts after i studying them first in the Lammle book.
The only drawback is that there are some typos here and there, but if you studied the Lammle book first, you'll find yourself making the corrections anyway. The primary reason i gave it 4 stars is because there is currently no 640-801 edition.
Book needs some work.......2004-01-11
If only this book had authors that were as good with networking as I am with world economic planning, it would be valuable.
--Alan Greenspan
640-507 is a retired test........2003-06-13
.
This book covers a retired exam (640-507).
Passport does not produce the CCNA 640-607 book.
This book will not prepare you for the CCNA any more.
.
Too many errors.......2003-04-26
Way too many errors. This is not a good book for someone who does not have any experience. The IP addressing section is a joke.
Short (what is good) but having tens of errors........2003-02-25
Lots of errors and all kinds of typos.
Some topics are missed.
Only good if you already know the material so
you will enjoy finding errors and misleading facts.
I am wondering if author ever read his own book.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for 70-294 exam.......2007-06-07
I'm already a Windows 2000 MCSE. This book is a great review of Active Directory, including the differences between the 2000 and 2003 environments. I find Brian Culp's writing style very easy to read and entertaining. The humor in this book reminds me of some Dummies books that I've read. This book is much easier to read than the Mike Meyers 70-293 Network Infrastructure book by Martin C. Brown and Chris McCain. When I read the 70-293 book, I dozed off serveral times before I could finish Chapter 3. Brian Culp's book is also much easier to follow than the big boring Sybex series of books. I also think Brian Culp does a better job with the review questions at the end of each chapter. The explanations of the answers to the review questions are very helpful. Appendix C is also a great review of DNS.
Comprehensive, thorough and (no joke) entertaining.......2003-11-04
I can't say enough about the latest installment by this author. It's clear to me why the Passport series keeps going back to Mr. Culp, as his insight and knowledge are unequalled. Add his truly entertaining style of writing and this book is in a class of its own. When new products have come onto the market in the past, often we are forced to choose between books that read like stereo instructions and books "for Dummies," (both of which are currently being used to torture suspected Al Qaeda members). If you are looking to learn and actually enjoy the process, I highly suggest this book.

Mike Meyers, the industry expert on professional certification, brings you this concise, affordable, and portable study tool for the new MCSA certification exam. Customer Reviews:
Right on the money.......2003-03-17
Great coverage of a new topic. I read this book. Took one transcender. Passed the test. I like the book because it's all meat and no potatoes. It was easy to read and edited very well. My first Passport book and I enjoyed it very much. I usually use the red and blue Syngress books, but I think I found another favorite.
Great 70-218 overview.......2003-03-10
Very readable. Concise. A great overview. Given the price, a great value.
Certification seekers: If you have a lot of real-world experience this will be useful in pointing out what you haven't had to deal with but will be on the test. Those taking classes to prepare will find this a much more pleasant review than slogging through the Microsoft Press book again. Useful for those taking the 70-215 test as well, as the 70-218 rehashes many concepts begun in 70-215.
Possible improvements:
If the CD tests were expanded/enhanced, value would be even greater.
In the text: Need more "On the Test" mentions.
Great 70-218 test's review.......2002-11-08
This book is easy to read; excellent writing style, not boring at all. It contains a good summarize of important concepts for pass and understand the 70-218 Microsoft test, but CAN NOT BE your one resource. You'll need another book for 218 or have strong knowledge and "hands on" experience working on Windows2000.
Recommended book for use with this: MS-PRESS Book 2nd Edition.
Cut down and right to the point........2002-09-14
There are certification books and manuals designed to cover the exam beyond the objectives and then there is those books whose purpose is to hammer home the finer points of the exam, this I one of those books.
Cutting down the material to cover the most important facets of the exam while ensuring the objective are met is what we have in this manual. Overall the author has given you a handy reference manual. Keep in mind that this book is a supplement to studying and you will need other books.
The book is setup in a manner that covers each objective from beginning to end. Each chapter has a study time frame to set a guide for you, although you can take as much time as need in the areas you are having trouble with.
Throughout the book there is exam tips and notes as well as review questions at the end of each chapter, which should give you a good handle on the exam. Also included is a cdrom with more question to practice with. What the author has done is taken the reader straight to the exam point, without sacrificing content.

Good starting point for Win2k AD..........2003-03-15
If you plan on purchasing Directory Services Passport book I would recommend using this book as a quick overview before taking the 70-217 exam because that is the way it is setup. If you follow the MCSE track and the 70-217 exam is your 5th or later test in the track, this book will really become a redundancy of the information you have already learned. The information in it is very easy to read, almost too easy. To save yourself some money when you want a good starting foundation of Active Directory (in my opinion) is purchasing Mastering Windows 2000 Server by Sybex/Mark Minasi. You will get the same information with all aspects of Windows 2000 covered and a more enjoyable read.
Light.......2003-03-12
Like the other books in the series, it covers topics very lightly and should be used as a last second quick study guide rather than a primary one. The CD-ROM includes a decent exam prep with questions tougher than those in the book.
Easy reading - Good overview.......2003-01-28
Material and subject overview rated 5. Test preparation rated 1. Get Transcender.
Excellent - Well organized -.......2002-09-11
I have attended SMS Security seminars by Mr. Kaczmarek which were very informative and presented in an enjoyable learning matter. This book was my main source of study material for the 70-217 exam which I passed on my 1st try. I have since bought many of the other Mike Meyers books, hoping they are organized and read as easy as this one. Kudos & Cheers!
You need this book!.......2001-11-28
This was an extremely helpful book -- easy, concise reading! Meyers knows how to get the point across and includes some useful graphics. A must-buy book by a computer guru!

Very good detail and too the point.......2005-12-07
Between this and a number of other books I used to study for the 70-216 exam. I just got home from passing this exam and am now ready to continue on with finishing my MCSE certifcation for Windows 2000. I had already completed my MCSA in Windows 2000 and it had been awhile since my last exam. But I wanted to continue to work on my skills and finish my MCSE soon.
This series is one in which I would highly recommended. Just wish they had them now to cover the electives I need to finish my MCSE now.
Quick Review.......2003-03-12
This is a fair last second exam prep book. It contains brief introductions into various topics with sample questions after each chapter. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a decent practice exam with more challenging questions than the ones in the book.
Right on the money.......2002-11-23
Don't kid yourself if you've never touched the stuff, but this book makes an excellent compliment to any prep material you may have already used or own. Already having taken a basic networking class, for me this hammered down all the fundamentals including practical scenarios. The chapters on RRAS,VPN,& Certificates may prove troublesome for beginners, as it will be hard to visualize what is read without having any experience (classroom or otherwise). This book doubles as a concise reference, for those starting out. The only way you could possibly get more detail is if it came directly from Microsoft. This is good value for the price.
Very well done.......2002-09-09
I highly recommend this book if it is used *only* to compliment some other, more in-depth, material. Prior to this book I had taken the 2153 class and had read the entire corresponding MOC book. This book did an outstanding job of nailing down the important points and clarifying the theories of the 70-216 exam topics. It is, however, not a replacement for an all encompassing 70-216 book, such as the MOC or Microsoft Press books, or perhaps one of the other various hardbacks available. This is extremely readable though, which is a welcome change from the incredibly unreadable MOC books. I got through this in a just a few days.
Lightweight, easy read.......2002-08-20
This book is a perfect introduction to the 70-216 test. It covers all the basics. It is a very easy read, however, it is a little light on the real nitty-gritty of DNS and WINS management. If you've been working on them for a little while, and think that your understanding may have some holes in it, this book is perfect for you. Just don't kid yourself about the 70-216 exam - one book won't make you pass.

Excellent Java book to clear concept, but not for newbies........2003-03-24
This is a very good Java book for not only the certification exam but also the one which helps you to get clear concept. I have experience in programming Java and now decide to go certified. I do feel this book help me quite a lot in the exam preparation. It serves as a very good review for the Java knowledges I have. The price of the book is also very nice. I can say that you get far more than you paid. One thing I would like to mention is this book probably a little bit tough for the newbies. If you are new to Java and do not have much OOP experience, I will not recommand you this one. Although most of comments here are negative, I still want to give this book a high rating.
Run Away -- Run Away.......2002-11-30
This book is only worth purchasing as a doorstop
There are numerous errors in the test areas. The result is that you can not determine whether or not you are indeed prepared. It will waste your time to use these materials; to speak much less of your money!
This book is terrible.......2002-11-11
I have been working with Java for 4 years now and decided to finally get certified.
I decided to go against my instinct and not read amazon's reviews before purchasing the book. It was a terrible decision.
There are so many errors in the testing sections of this book, that I will most likely have to pay more money and get another book just to straighten my mind out. Examples of this include things where the author suggests you choose 3 out 5 possible answers for a multiple choice question, and then only lists 2 correct answers in the solutions. Now granted this inhumane struggle is a great way to learn the langauge, but isn't that what I paid the author to do in the first place?
Do not waste your time on this or other passport books.
OK at best.......2002-08-03
What's Good:
1. Gives you good overview of what to expected on the exam.
2. Questions at the end of each chapter and their answers (not all answers are clear but overall it's acceptable).
3. Quick summary at the end of each chapter.
What's Bad:
1. Tons of errors. Just look at the book's webpage. The lack of professionalism on the publisher's part is quite evident. Let me put it this way, if I had know it had this much errors prior to purchasing this book, I wouldn't have purchased it.
2. Very weak in area's where explanation IS necessary. It really annoys the hell out of you after a while. This is definitely not a book for beginners, but even if you are an expert some statements in the book will make you say "huh, what the heck are they talking about?"
3. The accompanying CD is worthless! Just go to "JavaRanch.com/maha" for mock exams.
What's Ugly:
1. The book's index is just horrible! You can hardly find what you are looking for even though something pertaining to it is discussed in the book.
2. No glossary. What's an exam book without a glossary? The book make's it nearly impossible to do last minute check on things you don't fully comprehend. If the back of the book index was good the lack of a glossary would have been acceptable but it isn't.
I would recommend that you go to your local library and check it out rather than purchase it. You definitely shouldn't rely on this book alone to prepare you for the exam.
Poor quality control.......2002-06-27
The contents of the book are OK if you already know Java and want to quickly brush up. There is too much assumed to just pick this book up as your first Java certification book. My major complaint is that there are numerous errors in the question and answers and on the CD's practice exam which is the main reason for buying. It is very frustrating to look at a list of answers and feel that none of them are correct or to look for a third when only two are - you find yourself doubting your knowledge and then, doubting the rest of the book's contents.
