Customer Reviews:
Good exam prep but falls short for 70-270 mastery.......2007-03-05
It is not the text to learn everything you want to know for the 70-270 exam. There are other books that are much thicker and more comprehensive that will do that for you. As with the other Mike Meyers books, this is the "Reader's Digest" or "Cliff Notes" version of the material. I used the Mike Meyers Passport series for the A+ and Network+ exams and found them the best review available for the exams, but this Passport falls short of that. It lacked information in the "domain" areas and some of the newer capabilities of SP2. It was too focused on workgroups and fell short in the corporate domain areas. The CD practice exams didn't map very well with the questions I found on the real exam.
Mike Meyers XP Professional Passport still has value as a review to be used with other books. It is well organized, straight forward, and fairly well written. It is worth the price and the 15-20 hours it will take to master the material. I passed the 70-270 exam on the first try by a decent margin by using Mike Meyers along with two other texts and an on line class. This book, by itself, will not get you to the finish line.
This book is outdated, but will still help you pass........2006-04-27
The Mike Meyers Passport series is excellent for certification prep. This is my third certification I've passed using these books, the other two being A+ and Network+. I took the 70-270 two times before realizing there was a Passport book for the test. I failed the test both times. Then I discovered this book, bought it, read it, and passed it the third time around. Passing is what matters the most, however I didn't get as high of a score as I wanted. I received a score of 715, with a passing score of 700 for this test, which means I barely passed. I believe the reason this happened is because the book has not been updated to include anything about Service Pack 2, or Bluetooth technology (yes, the test asks about Bluetooth). Also, the book seems to center around Windows XP Pro in a workgroup environment. However, the actual test mostly centers around XP Pro in a corporate domain environment. This book will still help you understand XP Pro since most of what is covered is still valid, but the test has changed since the book was published. I recommend this book only if you combine it with sample test questions from Testking.com. The questions provided by them are word-for-word from the actual 70-270 exam for both the questions and the answers that are given (I question the legality of the study guides provided by them, but obviously they must be legal since they have not been shut down by Microsoft or any of the many other testing companies they provide study guides for). If you get the questions and answers memorized, you will speed through the test while passing it with flying colors. I used the Testking materials myself, but didn't read all of it because I decided I'd rely mostly on this Mike Meyers book like I did with the CompTIA tests, though I now wish I had read the Testking study guide all the way through. The Microsoft tests are much more difficult than anything by CompTIA. In all fairness, I still passed and could not have done it without this book, so I give it 3 stars.
Similar to..........2005-12-31
I read through this book in a fair amount of time. Most of the details were on the money. This book and exam is very similar to the MCDST certification offered for XP. This book gave me a few extra "hints" that I could have used when I took my MCDST. Overall, this is a good book for this exam.
You can pass with this book!.......2005-08-03
I estimate that book covers 90% of the exam. I believe the only other resources cover the other 10% is experience and plenty of time on microsoft.com. I will also say that this is by far the toughest Microsoft exam that I have taken (12 of them and counting). If you know this book well and you are a good test taker, you will pass this exam.
More concise than other books.......2004-10-20
Out of all the books I looked at for the 70-270 exam, this was the most accurate. I bought the Exam-Cram series book, and thought it was poorly writen, loaded with irrelevant information, and the practice test included with it was horrible. The Mike meyers book was well writen, informative, had a good practice test, and overall was a great study guide. But even with both books, it took me two tests to pass the 70-270. Mike Myers book isn't all you'll need for test day, but it's the best study guide on the market. The thing about Microsoft's tests is that the questions can be broad, and require hands on experience to anwser them.

Best Study Guide on the Market.......2007-05-24
I was introduced to the Passport series while studying for my Network+ exam. Since then I have used the Passport series for 70-270, 70-290 and 70-218, both tests were passed with flying colors. I purchased numerous other books but always come back to the Passport series. Couldn't pass a test without them.
Great book if you have a lot of experience............2005-09-06
I am using the passport series to work on my MCSE. I have taken two exams (70-290 and 70-293)using just this series as guides and have passed both first time. I have been working with NT/AD technology for years so I am looking for concise info concentrated on what I need to pass exams and find these books fit the bill.
If you are new to Windows or networking, these books are not tutorials. They do not provide much hand holding through examples, they are just study guides.
I can only rate the books as four stars because on each exam I took, I was blindsided by a few questions. Things on the exam that the book did not even cover.
However, they do earn a solid four stars for their conciseness. They are relatively short, easy to read and well focused on giving you the information you need to pass. If you have a solid background in the technologies already, they will not waste your time with tutorials.
All told, I have found them to be excellent study guides. If you are new to Windows, you'll need another series.
supplemental only.......2004-08-14
Do not rely upon this book only. You will be disappointed. Also, the book assumes that the reader already has knowledge of this server. Statements like "spend some time looking at the group policies" are supposed to help. Come on there are over 160 group policies on the 2003 Server. I have taken the 70-290 twice and did worse the second time. The night before I reread most of this book which I don't think helped much. I really haven't found anything that matches the last test that I took (70-290).
I wish that I could find something that matches what Microsoft does on test day.
Don't rely on any one book.
Wonderful Book!.......2004-04-07
There are only a small handful of computer books out of the many dozens I have purchased in my career that I not only wanted to read cover to cover, but have. "Mike Meyers' Windows Server 2003 Certification Passport" is one of them. As someone who uses Windows Server 2003 daily and teaches it to others in a college setting, this book is a refreshing change from the other Windows Server 2003 books on the market. The "Certification Passport" presents its content in a fun format as a "travel guide" to Windows Server 2003. I found that this book expertly crafts the material into something that you were reading because to have to, into something you want to. It injects humor into many topics, and makes material that would otherwise be rather dull, appealing to its readers. Students (and teachers) will find the end-of-chapter questions helpful, but it is the book's writing style, to the point, clear, and interesting, that will make you come back to it again.
Good supplement to your other review materials.......2004-04-07
I picked this book up as a supplement to my other study materials and as a quick reference guide, this is a decent book. Although it doesn't go into any great detail, it does touch on a number of subjects. Although I haven't taken the 70-290 exam yet, I did find more coverage of topics that are covered by the 70-291 exam, which were absent from those books. The book also comes with a CD containing a MasterSim exam, which has over 200 questions. I wouldn't use this for a stand-alone study guide, but I haven't found a book yet that could stand up to that challenge... Summary: brief and to the point.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for 70-294 exam.......2007-06-07
I'm already a Windows 2000 MCSE. This book is a great review of Active Directory, including the differences between the 2000 and 2003 environments. I find Brian Culp's writing style very easy to read and entertaining. The humor in this book reminds me of some Dummies books that I've read. This book is much easier to read than the Mike Meyers 70-293 Network Infrastructure book by Martin C. Brown and Chris McCain. When I read the 70-293 book, I dozed off serveral times before I could finish Chapter 3. Brian Culp's book is also much easier to follow than the big boring Sybex series of books. I also think Brian Culp does a better job with the review questions at the end of each chapter. The explanations of the answers to the review questions are very helpful. Appendix C is also a great review of DNS.
Comprehensive, thorough and (no joke) entertaining.......2003-11-04
I can't say enough about the latest installment by this author. It's clear to me why the Passport series keeps going back to Mr. Culp, as his insight and knowledge are unequalled. Add his truly entertaining style of writing and this book is in a class of its own. When new products have come onto the market in the past, often we are forced to choose between books that read like stereo instructions and books "for Dummies," (both of which are currently being used to torture suspected Al Qaeda members). If you are looking to learn and actually enjoy the process, I highly suggest this book.

Good starting point for Win2k AD..........2003-03-15
If you plan on purchasing Directory Services Passport book I would recommend using this book as a quick overview before taking the 70-217 exam because that is the way it is setup. If you follow the MCSE track and the 70-217 exam is your 5th or later test in the track, this book will really become a redundancy of the information you have already learned. The information in it is very easy to read, almost too easy. To save yourself some money when you want a good starting foundation of Active Directory (in my opinion) is purchasing Mastering Windows 2000 Server by Sybex/Mark Minasi. You will get the same information with all aspects of Windows 2000 covered and a more enjoyable read.
Light.......2003-03-12
Like the other books in the series, it covers topics very lightly and should be used as a last second quick study guide rather than a primary one. The CD-ROM includes a decent exam prep with questions tougher than those in the book.
Easy reading - Good overview.......2003-01-28
Material and subject overview rated 5. Test preparation rated 1. Get Transcender.
Excellent - Well organized -.......2002-09-11
I have attended SMS Security seminars by Mr. Kaczmarek which were very informative and presented in an enjoyable learning matter. This book was my main source of study material for the 70-217 exam which I passed on my 1st try. I have since bought many of the other Mike Meyers books, hoping they are organized and read as easy as this one. Kudos & Cheers!
You need this book!.......2001-11-28
This was an extremely helpful book -- easy, concise reading! Meyers knows how to get the point across and includes some useful graphics. A must-buy book by a computer guru!

Very good detail and too the point.......2005-12-07
Between this and a number of other books I used to study for the 70-216 exam. I just got home from passing this exam and am now ready to continue on with finishing my MCSE certifcation for Windows 2000. I had already completed my MCSA in Windows 2000 and it had been awhile since my last exam. But I wanted to continue to work on my skills and finish my MCSE soon.
This series is one in which I would highly recommended. Just wish they had them now to cover the electives I need to finish my MCSE now.
Quick Review.......2003-03-12
This is a fair last second exam prep book. It contains brief introductions into various topics with sample questions after each chapter. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a decent practice exam with more challenging questions than the ones in the book.
Right on the money.......2002-11-23
Don't kid yourself if you've never touched the stuff, but this book makes an excellent compliment to any prep material you may have already used or own. Already having taken a basic networking class, for me this hammered down all the fundamentals including practical scenarios. The chapters on RRAS,VPN,& Certificates may prove troublesome for beginners, as it will be hard to visualize what is read without having any experience (classroom or otherwise). This book doubles as a concise reference, for those starting out. The only way you could possibly get more detail is if it came directly from Microsoft. This is good value for the price.
Very well done.......2002-09-09
I highly recommend this book if it is used *only* to compliment some other, more in-depth, material. Prior to this book I had taken the 2153 class and had read the entire corresponding MOC book. This book did an outstanding job of nailing down the important points and clarifying the theories of the 70-216 exam topics. It is, however, not a replacement for an all encompassing 70-216 book, such as the MOC or Microsoft Press books, or perhaps one of the other various hardbacks available. This is extremely readable though, which is a welcome change from the incredibly unreadable MOC books. I got through this in a just a few days.
Lightweight, easy read.......2002-08-20
This book is a perfect introduction to the 70-216 test. It covers all the basics. It is a very easy read, however, it is a little light on the real nitty-gritty of DNS and WINS management. If you've been working on them for a little while, and think that your understanding may have some holes in it, this book is perfect for you. Just don't kid yourself about the 70-216 exam - one book won't make you pass.

Good for reference.......2004-02-16
This book is good for a quick reference. The review questions at the end of each chapter are nice. The CD Rom's practice questions are ok at best. I would not recommend this book/cd exclusively for practice and studying. I passed the 70-215 exam with the following materials: This Passport book; Transcender's simulation exam and TransTrainer video. Also, I highly recommend using two or more computers (one set up as the domain controller/server) to get a feel for the domain environment - I can't stress that enough. Good Luck!!!
reference material book yes, exam aid, no.......2004-01-29
This book will get you some basic knowledge of what you need to pass the XP exam. I would use it more for reference than a study guide. I would not suggest using it alone to pass the exam. Get yourself some other more detailed books or study aids.
Not wonderful.......2003-07-15
While Passport for 2000 Client allowed me to pass easily by itself, this book did not seem to give enough detail, and I had to read another book before feeling ready to pass the test. I highly suggest either combining this book with another, or choosing a single more detailed book.
A good start.......2003-04-04
I just finished the Mike Meyers MCSE suite and I have to say that I am impressed. Meyers style of writing make reading a very dull and dry subject somewhat bearable interspersed with moments of almost voicefull laughter. This is a must for anyone out there that needs to get an MCSE and dont mind some good ol' fashioned Microsoft bashing at the same time. The knowledge gained is pretty much the same as with any MCSE prep material but his test tips are golden.
Good enough for what it is........2003-03-06
... This book is just what I expected and wanted. A quick read to review what I know and expose what I don't. If you want depth, buy a different (much thicker and more expensive) book.

Review of a review.......2003-02-26
I would like to give " A reader from APO, AP United States," full marks for this classic:
"This book in peticular has numerous gramatical errors (using wrong words)"
Never mind that fact that this idiot manages to incorrectly spell "particular" and "grammatical" in the same sentence. The beautiful part of this misguided attempt is the inclusion of: "using wrong words" as a clarifier for the rest of us obvious "idiots" who are unfamiliar with exactly what the definition of "gramatical errors" are. I would say the actual definition is just a trifle more involved than "using wrong words," and at the same time remind this reviewer that those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Oh, also: they have this really cool thing now called Spell Checking. You may want to check it out.
I nearly forgot to mention: this is a very good review for this exam.
Does its job.......2002-12-17
I've looked at a lot of cert titles and this is as good as any I've run across. For 20 bucks, you get material that's to the point and maps to test objectives, plus there are lots of good questions. For certification it's far better than anything put out by MS Press. If you relied on MS for certification study, you'd never pass the tests. This will at least point you in the right direction.
Not as good as A+ or Network+.......2002-11-27
I purchased the Mike Meyers A+ certfication book (hardbound)
which is *very* thorough, I felt the Network+ Passport book
was pretty good also. This book is a different kettle of fish...
The book has disappointed me on repeated occasions. I
know NT 4.0 very well and have been working with Microsoft-based
products in administrative and development capacities for the
last 10 years. I found errors, contradictions, poorly worded
explanations, etc. It's almost like the editing was rushed
to get this book to press. After reading a chapter, I find that
I can only answer about half of the review questions correctly.
My comprehension may be slightly impaired due to age and other
factors, but I'm not as dim as this book makes me feel!
I also found a number of errors on the practice exam, I
checked into the web site, but found no corrections.
I like the author's humor, but I find myself not feeling very
well prepared with a reasonable amount of Windows 2000 Pro
experience. I ordered the Microsoft MCSE kit as a supplement,
I'm hoping to gain some additional knowledge and the copy of
2000 Server will help me pass the 70-215 test.
If I used this as my only preparation guide, I would not
expect to pass the exam on my first try. This is a little bit
contrary to what I read in one of the MCSE boards I visited
before purchasing reference materials.
If you're new to Information Technology, this is a great buy.......2002-09-29
As a student new to the IT world, I found this book extremely useful as a supplement to the class textbook. Brian breaks down "computerese" into layman's terms. I really appreciated Brian's humor, especially after studying for a couple of hours! I don't think I would have passed the certification test without this book. In fact, with the help of the next book in this series, I've just passed the Server test!

Customer Reviews:
Mike Myers ..........2002-12-06
This book is the worst book I have ever read that claims to prep you for the 70-215 exam. it covers only the very basics of the operating system and its functions. after reading this book and then doing practice tests online I found that almost 3/4 of the questions I was being asked about windows 2000 server where not even in this book or where just barley mentioned at all. If you want to pass the exam please do not wast your time on this book.
Great replacement for the Exam Cram series.......2002-08-09
This series does an excellent job of improving upon the model set by the popular (but now defunct) ExamCram series. The Passport series follow an almost identical format, but are a bit more thorough, easier to read, and more consistent. While they won't replace your traditional training guides, they're a great companion to classroom training or self study with a Microsoft approved Exam Guide. The portable format allows to you study anywhere, and the focus on objectives helps you quickly review the information vital to passing the exam. The Exam prep software included with the series is basic, and filled with typos, but adequate. Luckily, each book in the series comes with its own set of review questions that do an excellent job of preparing you for the actual exam. Overall, these are a great way to review for the Microsoft exams, and I think ExamCram fans will be pleasantly surprised. You can read a full review of the series at [URL]
