You screwed me up. I ordered a book not a CD version of it.

3 out of 5 stars Okay for absolute beginner.......2005-08-14

Not bad, but definitely for absolute beginners, and some materials not truly oop oriented. Very little coverage of database applications or web applications; out of step with current development.

all disks in my copy
no installation issues at all
looks like a great beginning book, cover all the basics.

Great book but the software is not very easy to load to a laptop or other computer if you have a combination drive for both DVD and CD. I wasted many hours trying to load the MSDN library software with this dual drive. I contacted Microsoft but their technical support only caused more frustration. In an effort to salvage the install after a fourth failed attempt,I used an auxillary CD drive, with connection to a USB port, to install the software. I did not have a problem or get any error messages using the CD drive. My advice is to not try a combo drive for installing the software - go the CD drive route to stay sane.

5 out of 5 stars Complete package perfect for a beginner!.......2004-03-18

I purchased the Deluxe Learning Edition and am very pleased with what I got. I was a little nervous ordering it at first because of the previous reviews stating that the bundle did not include all of the disks.

My package did contain ALL the necessary disks. My box contained 6 disks:
1) Visual Basic.Net Standard Disk
2) Visual Studio.Net Development Environment Disk
3) Complete MSDN Library 3-Disk Set
4) Visual Basic.Net Step by Step Sample Disk from the Book
5) 'Visual Basic.Net Step by Step' Book.

I am a beginner VB programmer and find the book very easy to follow. For those of you that may have learned Visual Basic 6, the author starts out each chapter by describing the general changes between VB6 and VB.Net.

Overall, I find this Deluxe Learning Edition to be an excellent value. Let's just hope Microsoft now has their packaging right!

    Book Description

Most Visual Basic .NET books are written for experienced object-oriented programmers, but many programmers jumping on the .NET bandwagon are coming from non-object-oriented languages, such as Visual Basic 6.0 or from script programming, such as JavaScript. These programmers, and those who are adopting VB.NET as their first programming language, have been out of luck when it comes to finding a high-quality introduction to the language that helps them get started. That's why Jesse Liberty, author of the best-selling books Programming C# and Programming ASP.NET, has written an entry-level guide to Visual Basic .NET. Written in a warm and friendly manner, this book assumes no prior programming experience, and provides an easy introduction to Microsoft's most popular .NET language. Learning Visual Basic .NET is a complete introduction to VB.NET and object-oriented programming. This book will help you build a solid foundation in .NET, and show how to apply your skills by using hundreds of examples to help you become productive quickly. Learning Visual Basic .NET introduces fundamentals like Visual Studio .NET, a tool set for building Windows and Web applications. You'll learn about the syntax and structure of the Visual Basic .NET language, including operators, classes and interfaces, structs, arrays, and strings. Liberty then demonstrates how to develop various kinds of applications--including those that work with databases--and web services. By the time you've finished Learning Visual Basic .NET, you'll be ready to move on to a more advanced programming guide that will help you create large-scale web and Windows applications. Whether you have a little object-oriented programming experience or you are new to programming altogether, Visual Basic .NET will set you firmly on your way to mastering the essentials of the VB.NET language.

4 out of 5 stars Great foundation for Visual Basic.NET.......2004-03-29

This book reinforces my good experience with the O'Reilly computer books. It gives a very good background for understanding object-oriented code -- in a structured and well-ordered approach. It starts as a primer, but rapidly builds, explaining the concepts well. Using console applications gives you a firm foundation for understanding the ideas. There's even some good humor along the way!

    3 out of 5 stars For a beginner programmer.......2004-03-17

I ordered this book to start learning Visual Basic .Net, but instead it spends the first half the book teaching me 'how to program', THEN it 'teaches me Visual Basic .Net'. I already know how to program, so the first half of this book is wasted on me. For exmaple, Chapter 6 talks about 'If' statements, 'Do While' loops, etc. Chapter 7 talks about operators (i.e. +, -, =). If you have very little programming experience and want to learn Visual Basic .Net, then get this book. If you know 'If' statements, 'Do While' loops, and Operators, then don't get this book.

2 out of 5 stars Bill in Albany.......2004-03-01

The book is too basic even for a first semester programming class. Running the code in Dos, come on, no new programmers are being taught that as their primary run environment at colleges anymore. I supervise the CIS/IT tutoring lab at a small college and working with the VB.Net Studio environment is one of the toughest things for students to learn. Also, with the current growth in XML students, learning VB.Net in the Studio IDE is all the more important. This is a decent "third" book to have on the subject. The author knows his stuff, he just didn't write it well or enough of it. Lastly, one other reviewer said his vb coding went back 7 years and he loved this book. Must've been the best man at the author's wedding.

5 out of 5 stars Great for First Time Programmers As Well.......2003-06-28

The book's back cover says that both seasoned programmers and new programmers will find the book useful - as a first time programmer, I agree. Syntax is discussed artfully, leaving more room for an exploration of concepts and practices - meaning that someone new to OOP will understand not only what to do but the best way to do it. Highly recommended for people ready to learn how to program.

5 out of 5 stars Must have Vb.Net book !.......2003-06-21

Superb book, especially for people with good amount of VB6 experience.

I myself have around 7 years of VB experience (started with VB 3 in college) and before stumbling upon this title, I tried the Sam's series and was greatly disppointed since such "beginner" books devote a great deal to the syntax, starting with how to open a project and draw a form ! This book wastes no such time in trivialities since it is assumed that as an experienced VB programmer, you already know all those things. In fact, only one chapter is devoted to the syntax and thereafter it builds on the OOP concepts. At the time of this writing, I have finished only half the book (till Structures) but from what I have experienced and understood so far, I don't think the author will let me down in the remainder of the book. In fact till this point, you don't even need the Visual Studio.Net IDE since you can happily type all the class examples in Notepad and run them from DOS prompt (Of course, you need to have the .Net framework installed, which again is a free download).

So, if you're disappointed or bored by those 24 hour/21 day titles, run don't walk, to get this book !

4 out of 5 stars I recommended that it be used for a VB.NET course.......2005-02-20

For years, I have taught a course in Visual Basic version 6 in the community education department of the local community college. With the movement to VB.NET, it is time to make the change. After examining this book, I have recommended that we use it for the updated course. The first seven chapters contain all of the standard examples of using the GUI objects and the constructs such as if - then -else and loops. It introduces the object-oriented features as early as possible. For example, try-catch blocks for exceptions are incorporated into the examples as early as page 88. There is no chapter devoted to object-oriented concepts in VB.NET; they are scattered throughout, introduced when appropriate.
Chapter eight covers processing databases and an introduction to ADO.NET and chapter nine is an introduction to XML and how it is used in VB. In chapter eleven, the collection objects such as hashtables and sortedlists are examined. Chapter twelve demonstrates how to use VB.NET to create web applications. At the end of each chapter, a large project is completely presented with a list of each of the GUI objects and the assignments to the properties as well as complete listings of the code for each module. Exercises are interspersed inside the chapters and solutions to some of them are included at the end. Sets of multiple-choice and programming problems are also at the end of each chapter.
VB.NET is quite different from VB 6, but is not all that hard to learn. However, if you are experienced in VB 6 and trying to learn VB.NET, then the worst approach is to suddenly be bombarded by a list of all the differences. The best way to learn VB.NET is to have the differences incorporated into your learning one idea at a time. It is that approach that sold me on this book.

    Book Description

This book/CD-ROM package explores a different approach to learning Visual Basic.net thanmost programming books on the market. Instead of reading chapter after chapter on a single topic, Learning Visual Basic.net through Applications focuses on having the reader complete a project in each chapter. The reader learns to create practical applications that he can actually use, such as an image browser, an email checker, an MP3 player, games, and much more. Each chapter is self-contained, allowing the reader to "skip" to the project of specific interest. Learning Visual Basic.net through Applications is simply the easiest way for programmers to learn Visual Basic.net.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best tutorials.......2003-06-27

I've bought about 20 books on Visual Studio .NET, and many of them are on Visual Basic. This is one of the best tutorials I've come across. Since I was familiar with a lot of the true beginner's stuff I skipped over most everything at the beginning and went immediately to chapter 13.

The chapters are short, the code is minimal, but you get applications that are really useful and you get to build those projects that always stump you, like how to I get to print something, or how do I program an OpenDialog box to display files? (Many of the current Help examples in Visual Studio 2003 don't work and are useless.)

There is also fun stuff: The chapters on Agents are worth the price of the book alone. This opened a whole new world to me and my 16 year old son.

The book is already in need of an update since I am now using VS2003, and a couple of the chapters don't quite work with the old code, and there are a number of IDE differences as well. But most all of the applications work and you can get to modify them to suit your own applications.

I would suggest an updated book with all the first 12 chapters removed, and with examples for Mobile devices added. Hint, hint, Mr. Crooks.

If you are a novice VB .NET programmer, this is one of the first books you should get. The other first books you should get have been rated in these reviews. Just find one with high marks and that explains how to use the IDE, and how to display "Hello, world".

Unfortunately, there are hardly any books on the new Visual Studio 2003, so you'll have slim pickings for those or just stuggle with the old books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book & great examples.......2003-05-18

While there are a few small errors, this is a great book. I bought this book, and liked it so much that I decided to buy the authors REALbasic book. It was great as well. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars Not perfect but close -.......2003-04-16

I read earlier reviews about some of the editing issues, but purchased the book anyway. I am glad I did. Mistakes are there, but if you are going to be a programmer, you can deal with them. I am a professional programmer studying .Net. Learning through the examples that are laid out within this book makes it extrordinairly easy. I have purchased many many books on programming and find that this is the best of the lot. It is not fancy, but it delivers the goods. To the author. Keep Writing.

2 out of 5 stars Needs proofreading badly.......2002-11-30

This book could have been so much better. The premise is very promising - build real world applications while learning VB.NET at the same time. The execution, however, falls flat.

There are several problems with this book. First, as in any technical book, there are errors, both typographical and omissions. One chapter deals with accessing system information and printing it to a window. It leaves out the key detail of adding a reference to the system library needed to accomplish this task. In the same chapter there are several typographical errors, some within the code. No one is perfect, and these things happen. However, overall, the book has more typos than I have ever seen in any other computer book. The publisher's website has no way, other than a generic info@ email, to notify them of typos or code errors. There are no errata listings on the site or any way to submit them, as with WROX or O'Reilly.

The actual content of the book isn't bad, and the code works (for the most part); however there a much larger focus on just providing code than actually explaining step by step what you are doing. The provided CD contains all the code in the book; beyond the first chapters that deal with the basics of programming both in general and also specifically in VB.NET, the CD essentially contains the contents of the book. While those first few chapters are generally well-written, the explanations are not very deep and drop off sharply once you reach the application-building chapters.

Overall, I would rate it 2 stars. A second edition, one that has been proofread, would knock it up to 4.

    5 out of 5 stars MP3 players, encryption programs, DirectX 8.1 & more.......2002-11-08

Learning Visual Basic.NET Through Applicationsby Clayton E. Crooks II (a partner in Advanced Information Systems, a consulting company specializing in custom hardware and software solutions) is a straightforward companion reference and instructive guide to learning how to program in Visual Basic.NET while developing applications such as MP3 players, encryption programs, DirectX 8.1, word processors and much more. Easy-to-follow chapters cover an introduction to the VB.NET language, math and random functions, strings, error handling, and progress to more complex topics like Windows form applications drawing with VB.NET, and Microsoft Agent. Screenshots, sample code, and step-by-step instructions make Learning Visual Basic.NET Through Applications a superb supplement to any course in VB.NET, or even an excellent self-taught course. An accompanying CD-ROM offers numerous tools, figures, and source code for every project in the book - almost everything except for VB.NET itself is on it. Learning Visual Basic.NET Through Applications is very highly recommended to anyone needing to quickly and efficiently learn or deepen their understanding and utilization of VB.NET.

      1 out of 5 stars Frustrated Student.......2005-12-05

This was the textbook for a beginning VB class I'm enrolled in. I have never seen a worse textbook in my life. It jumps all over, changes topics frequently and gives terrible examples. Most computer textbooks have a "case" that you follow throughout the book, adding to the project as you learn. Although there is a case followed throughout the book, in each chapter he invents a new case to show examples and then only uses part of the chapter material in the main case. The result is very disjointed information. In the beginning, he displays all new code used in that chapter together in one spot but he stops doing this halfway through the book. I spent more time thumbing back and forth in the book trying to find information I needed than I spent writing code. Looking in the glossary tells it all; look at validation and you'll be referred to 4 different chapters. Not to mention all the typos. Do not buy this book to use in a classroom, it's a mess.

3 out of 5 stars Content Fine but oh the errors.......2004-12-06

This is a well structured text with a blend of tutorial, informational, quiz and project material.
It suffers, however, from a large number of errors (the companion web site lists 7 A4 pages of errors for the 2nd printing - Errata) and the use of 'old style' constructs MsgBox and not MessageBox.Show; Instr and not .Substring; UCase() and not .ToUpper etc.
Unfortunately, the comprehensive style and content of the text is affected by the above.
It looks like a book, based on a VB6 offering, that was rushed out to meet the .Net market.
An update to the existing content with newer style constructs and some effective proof reading would make it an excellent text.

5 out of 5 stars A great tool for anyone wanting to get into .NET.......2003-10-17

The author of this book speaks from his worldwide experience with the .NET framework and E-commerce. He takes lectures and conducts seminars throughout the world and disperses his knowledge freely to those he teaches. I was fortunate to be present for one of his courses in Auckland, New Zealand and the information I have received at that 6-day seminar, as backed up in his book is currently enabling me to better my career in IT by providing me with an extra edge to my technical skill set. Great book! I highly recommend you read it.
