What a mess.......2002-11-12
This book was a total mess. Jumps around from subject to subject. Very hard to follow.
What a mess.......2002-11-12
This book was a total mess. Jumps around from subject to subject. Very hard to follow.
A bit of overkill but still a good book to have around........2002-09-25
Working on the transition to Exchange 2000 is a project that I am involved with. I am using the Resource Kit for a lot of planning and deployment ideas. I think that with book as a compliment to this book I will be able to pass the exam.
I found that there are over 80 labs in the book and coupled with the 120 day evaluation of the software this make it easier to process the concepts. What I found was that unlike some of the other Microsoft Press books, this one does not seems to flow as well from topic to topic.
Also being new to the Exchange 2000 Arena, I also thought this book may have been written to those with a little more experience. Although I did like the deployment, public folders and especially the Outlook Web Access section, since they apply more to what I am working on.
Overall I think this book can be a handy and useful tool if it was scaled down to every technical level.
Excellent.......2002-07-03
Unlike some other prep books, the chapters contain exercises that make you perform the skills discussed. It also includes helpful multimedia demonstrations on the CD-ROM. The CD also contains 120-day Exchange 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Server evaluations and supplemental course materials. The Outlook 2000 evaluation is useless because its expired regardless of what date or time your system is set at. This is a confirmed problem on Microsoft's Technet website. This is insignificant since you may already have Outlook 2000 that was installed with Microsoft Office 2000. At over 1,000 pages, its a hefty reference to complement Exchange 2000.
Too Wordy and Redundent.......2001-11-30
Don't waste your time on this book. Author repeats himself, and covers a lot of stuff that are less relevant. Book not well organized.
Book Description
The MCSE SQL 2000 Administration Exam Cram is the premier test preparation title for candidates choosing to take the elective "Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition" exam (70-228). Covers vital exam topics such as creating and managing SQL Server 2000 Databases, performing disaster recovery, troubleshooting Integrity Checks, extracting and transforming data, and SQL Server 2000 Security. Candidates can also complete their total exam preparation with insightful test taking strategies, helpful hints and tips, and realistic case studies and practice questions.

Not Sufficient.......2005-03-03
This book gives you alot of facts to remember and no examples to use. The test was all configuration and security scenario questions and alot of stuff in the book was hardly covered like backup and recovery, DTS, BCP, DBCC statements, replication, maybe one question each on these. No questions at all on steps to take during installation and configuration. I will be looking for something to supplement this with..
Not very useful.......2005-01-08
I read the entire book in 2 days... there is nothing in the book to actually remember... No concepts are described... all you see in this book are the screen shots of Enterprise Manager...
Honestly I don't recommend this book. I didn't try the Microsoft press book.. If I were to choose between this book and the Microsoft press book I would go for the Microsoft press book because I am very sure that any other book will have more information than this book. This book has nothing at all.. believe me.. NOTHING to read for the test.
I have used several Exam Cram books before and all of them turned out to be very useful other than this book. This book is not at all comparable with other books so use other books for your preparation.
GOOD LUCK
Disappointing..........2002-07-01
No, no, no.. This book is a waste of time. It gives an IN DEPTH step by step, excrutiatingly detailed how-to examples on using the installation wizard, and then glosses over the more important details that actually appear on the exam (like the C2 auditing and analyzing the SQL 2000 performance counters). If you're familiar at all with the software, this book has little or nothing to offer you in terms of actually test preparation. Microsoft assumes everybody taking the certification exams already knows when to click the next button.. Don't waste your time or money on this. The Dummies book is much better.
This book was money well spent.......2002-04-03
I passed 70-228 on my first attempt, using this book in conjunction with Transcender and Books Online as my primary study resources.
You won't get all the information you need to pass the real test from this book, but that is not its intent. It works well when used for what it is marketed as, which is a "cram" resource to supplement a sound knowledge of SQL Server 2000 administration. Especially useful for me were the practice questions, the practice test at the end, and the screenshots of Enterprise Manager dialogs. Good to have in the hours immediately before the test!
The contents have a few errors, including referring to the model database as "modal" throughout the book, but that doesn't detract too much from the overall utility of the book.
All in all, a good investment, considering the cost of each attempt on the real test.

Did the job!.......2002-02-01
This book gave me the extra pieces of information I needed to pass the exam. SQL 2000 ROCKS!

MCSE Exam 70-296 Study Guide & DVD Training System: Planning, Implementing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSE Certified on Windows 2000 is a one-of-a-kind integration of text, DVD-quality instructor led training, and Web-based exam simulation and remediation. This system gives you 100% coverage of the official Microsoft 70-296 exam objectives plus test preparation software for the edge you need to pass the exam on your first try.
In June, 2003 Microsoft will launch beta exams for the Windows Server 2003 certification line. Exams will likely go live the following August and September. This launch is a comprehensive revamping of the MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Enginner) track with all new core exams and all new electives. In addition, the MCSA (Microsoft Certified System Administrator) certification will expand its program to include an additional upgrade exam for MCSAs wanting to become MCSEs.
The launch of this new certification track means that all current MCSEs, representing an installed base of approximately 200,000 (source: MCP Magazine) will need to recertify under Windows Server 2003. In addition, any MCP looking to become an MCSE--estimates are about 1.2 million (source: MCP Magazine)--will also have to continue their certifications under the new program.
Many industry experts expect the Windows 2003 certification, and product line as well, to be a more popular track since many organziations are still using NT and plan to skip 2000 and go directly to 2003.
* DVD Provides a "Virtual Classroom": Get the benefits of instructor led training at a fraction of the cost and hassle.
* Guaranteed Coverage of All Exam Objectives: If the topic is listed in Microsoft's Exam 70-296 objectives, it is covered here.
* Fully Integrated Learning: This system includes a study guide, DVD training and Web-based practice exams.

Good material, but becoming outdated........2004-11-18
The material in the book was good enough for me to be able to pass the exam, however it is evident that it was written atleast 12 months ago. The publisher should consider releasing a revised edition soon.
Goog Book but Sometimes VERY Dry.......2004-09-30
One thing is for sure about this book... Some of the chapters are (1) VERY dry, (2) have looooong run-on sentences and (3) at times are quite difficult to figure out their logic/order. Chapter 2, for example, took me nearly a week to pick apart the run-on sentences, eliminate the 'garbage', piece together the 'meat' and then try to make sense of what was being said. It was painfully dull! Some of the other chapters, too, were about as exciting as reading a dictionary.
I haven't taken the test just yet, but I did find this book to be quite nice. Explanations are very good and overall, it's organized quite well. I'll post more after I take the test!
Good material, but needs a good Editor.......2004-01-21
The material in this book and in the 70-292 Study Guide is very good and complete. However, the number typos, punctuation errors, references to missing or incorrect figures, and just plain wrong answers to some practice questions -- is all very distracting. It would appear that the final edit of this book was skipped in order to get it out on schedule. Unfortunate. Make sure you have plenty of hands-on experience before taking this exam, esp. if this is your only source of study material.
On my way to my MCSE 2003!.......2004-01-09
I used this book along with some hands-on experience with Windows 2003 and was able to pass the test after about two weeks. This rating is based solely on the book material, as I did not use the DVD.
Good book, coverage of materials.......2003-11-18
I have been studying for this exam for over a month now using various sources, but this book brought everything together in a clear and concise manner. Unfortunately, some of the chapters are a bit lengthy and could have been seperated for easier retention, and the DVD was "ok". Other than that, it did a great job of preparing me for the exam.

Customer Reviews:
Not useful for exam.......2002-01-21
I would strongly recommend using a book from another publisher. I have normally had a great deal of success using prior Sybex study guides, but I was very unhappy with this particular one. I used it as my primary study guide, while using the Resource Kit to fill in the holes, and wrote the exam. I failed, and this was my first failure in fifteen IT exams. The book is not detailed enough in covering important exam topics. The CD, cases, and "test" questions were far more simplistic than the exam, and the information provided was NOT sufficient to pass 70-219. I considered the information in the resource kit more useful and technically complete than this Sybex book. Steer well clear of this book if you wish to pass this exam. You may find more use out of it as a high level design guide during projects, than as a complete study guide.
Very Disappointed.......2000-10-25
Even though I have always loved the books published by Sybex, I must confer that I am very disappointed with the lack of useful material contained in this book. There was no in-depth coverage on any of the critical exam topics and after reading the book I can assure you that you will not pass the exam based on this book alone.
I had to purchase books published by another vendor prior to taking the 70-219 exam to fill in all of the holes left by this book. I am happy that I passed the exam, but upset that I had to read more books than necessary to do it.
Thanks, but no thanks Sybex!
Light, not enough to pass the exam.......2000-09-26
I was very disappointed with the book. I had always liked the Sybex books. But the design test requires an extensive preparation. This book covers overall high level design objectives and does not dive deep into the types of case studies found on the exam.
Not impressed.......2000-09-26
After reading this book, I have to admit I am very disappointed.
The text is superficial and has no in-depth gems to share. There are no references to information that can be found on this topic on Microsoft's website. A good study guide should, in my opinion, learn students how to find information on their own.
The CD exam contains errors (I found two cases where the case studies and the questions don't match up, making the 'exam' practically useless).
My recommendation is to steer well-clear of this one.
Not so good.......2000-08-30
This book is not that great. There are many technical errors and places where items were not cleaned up when there was an opportunity to do so.

DO NOT COUNT ON THIS BOOK FOR PASSING THE EXAM.......2007-01-26
This book is good to become more knowledgeable on all topics, but the material certainly doesn't match even the style of questions on the exam.
Doesn't go into enough detail on the subjects.
Outdated Material--Seek other Study Materials.......2006-08-17
I had purchased this book in 2004 with the intentions of completing the exam at that time. As most IT pros know, the best laid plans are often foiled and I was unable to really start reviewing the material until earlier in the year. As much as I like the "big happy friendly letters" and writing style of this book, you'll be left lacking. Read the book cover to cover...doing the labs...the practice exams and have successfully passed the exam. Flat out IT WONT DO IT! Get another book!
Luckily, I checked the previous reviews and made a decision to invest in the Microsoft Upgrade book ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735619719/sr=1-1/qid=1155760374/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-7126449-1861536?ie=UTF8&s=books ) as well as a set of Transcender prep exams.
This book will no longer prepare you for the depth of 70-292 and as a matter of fact, it may cover as little as 30% of the exams content. It's great for a light casual overview but just doesn't cover the following subjects deeply enough:
1, Security Infrastructure, Certificate Infrastructure, Troubleshooting
2, Detailed DNS, extensive command line review
3, GPO Policy, Automating Server and TS management, Priveleges
4, Server recovery procedures, ASR, DC recovery, WSUS Recovery
If you want to pass this exam and move on to 70-296, get the Dan Holmes and Orin Thomas Microsoft Self Paced Training Kit as well as set of Transcenders. The Microsoft Book is not as dry as you'd expect and covers roughly 80% of the material...regretably, there isn't anything out there that will cover it %100.
Good luck to you all
Better than average!.......2005-12-15
This book has a few typos and a few factual errors, but that seems to be unavoidable with books of this type. It is better than most that I have read. It is a valuable resource.
70-292 has changed, and this book won't help.......2005-10-01
Just took 70-292 today. The exam has changed considerably since this book was written. According to sources on MCSA/MCSE forums, the exam has been rewritten as of December 2004. While it covers the same objectives, the focus is very different. No book written before December 2004 will prepare you enough for this exam.
Be prepared to write off your exam costs the first time you take it, as you'll probably be sitting for a retake.
Poor quality, not a serious preparation for exam.......2005-09-29
First of all, this book has plenty of mistakes among the self test questions. None of these questions or similar questions are asked at the exam and the dvd is useless, showing a trainer reading down the main lines of the chapters.
It was the first time I bought a Syngress book and the first time I did not pass a Microsoft exam. I'll go back to Microsoft Press.

MCSE Help 70-297.......2006-11-10
I like the exam cram books I use these for any ms exam that I take and recommend it. It quick and easy to read not to much detail I like the summary sheet also.
Excellent Exam Prep.......2005-05-17
The previous reviewer doesn't seem to understand the concept of exam cram books. They're written specifically to give you an idea of what's covered on the exam. They shouldn't be compared to $60, 800-page books that go into great detail about every little nuance of the technology. Crams are $30 and overviews. Let's make sure we're comparing apples to apples here. If you want more depth, sure, go buy a $60 book, but don't unfairly criticize a book because it doesn't do what it never claims it's supposed to do in the first place.
Just OK.......2004-09-07
After reading both this book and the 70-297 Sybex book, there is no comparison. This book does not cover anything that you don't already know if you are on the MCSE track. It seemed to be more written for someone that is just taking this exam... and hasn't studied anything for the other 6 exams in the MCSE track. My advice, spend the extra $ and get the Sybex book by Brad Price... it will be money well spent, and you may actually learn something you don't already know... I know I did!

Perhaps one of the best Microsoft training kits ever, the Windows 2000 Server training kit has the technical details and punch to make it almost--almost--a one-book passing grade. Unfortunately, the same surfeit of exam-extraneous details that makes this kit a solid reference book simultaneously blinds the reader with technical info that isn't on the MCSE/MCSA proper.
First of all, pop open the champagne bottles and have yourself some caviar... for the first time ever, Microsoft is putting actual MCSE questions in their books! In the past, the Microsoft training kits were notorious for posing essay-style questions while the MCSEs used multiple-choice questions. Evidently, reader feedback has changed their tune, and now a full third of the book is devoted to MCSE/MCSA-style quizzes. The better news is that unlike many study guides, the questions here are fairly hard-hitting; they're not quite up to the difficulty of the exam proper, but they're darn close. Furthermore, each set of questions is broken down by objective, and each answer is gone over in full detail. Did you choose B by mistake? The training guide not only tells you why C is right in a dense paragraph or two, but it explains why B wasn't even close to being right. That alone makes it a valuable study guide.
But the real meat of the book is in the writings and tutorials. The kit walks you through the internals of Windows 2000 Server in a fair amount of detail. If you've used other training kits and found them to be lacking when it came to preparing you for the exam, this kit is different from even the Windows 2000 Professional Guide--it analyzes Win2K fairly closely, going over the boot loading procedure in loving detail, explaining the ins and outs of zone transfers, and discussing permissions as fully as you please. The only section of Win2K that could be said to get the shaft is the comparatively sparse Active Directory section, and even that's a lot more comprehensive than many MCSE guides on the market nowadays.
In fact, that's the problem. Although the MCSE/MCSA exams have been cranking up in toughness over the years, they're still not ever going to ask you for, say, what IrDA is (a bidirectional wireless protocol) or for the WINS/NBT Node Type Code (046). Although the Windows 2000 Server exam is a fairly wide-ranging one and there's a lot of information to pack into any book that'd help get you a passing grade, this book's both wide and deep. As a result, you could well miss a critical exam topic in the flurry of details provided over the course of a thousand pages, or worse, you could waste valuable study time on a topic that you're never going to be tested on in a million years. As a result, you'll definitely pass if you study this book, but you'll have to study it hard to make sure you don't miss anything.
But if you do study it, and study well, you'll pass. That's not a promise that most books can make, but this manages. The complex sections--like remote access, unattended installations, and the boot section--will require a fair amount of rereading to get the gist of things, but once you've cracked down you can burrow into it more than you can in most books.
Another minor problem is that this book is also comparatively low on troubleshooting. It does discuss some of the common problems, of course, and the large (375-page) quiz section in the back definitely helps, but in the end, a lot of MCSE/MCSA questions deal with broken networks and things that need to be fixed. The book tends to focus on how Windows 2000 Server should work, and not on what commonly goes wrong or the errors that novices normally make. Unless you go out of your way to get a lot of hands-on experience--which, of course, you should--you could get tripped up when you encounter your first "Here are the symptoms, now identify the problem" question on the exam.
But still. In the end, this is probably one of the best books that Microsoft has produced for novice-to-intermediate users. If you shell out the shekels for this pile o' pages, you'll get past one of the tougher exams in the MCSE/MCSA arsenal. Highly recommended. --William Steinmetz

The complex sections--like remote access, unattended installations, and the boot section--will require a fair amount of rereading to get the gist of things, but once you've cracked down you can burrow into it more than you can in most books.Another minor problem is that this book is also comparatively low on troubleshooting.

Very good Book.......2004-12-30
The book has helpful tips and time management techniques it explain the use of the different parts of the system, at the end of each chapter you will find questions to check your progress and they are similar to the real exam, however you need to use other tools (example - test) to pass the real exam. At the end of the book you get a review of essential exam-related terms and concepts.
Terrible.......2004-02-26
Common sense tells us that who would know more about a product then it's inventors. Who whould be better to teach us about that product then the inventors. Well Microsoft has not and does not believe in common sense. you rely on this book to pass the test or to know anything pratical about Server 2000 and buddy you're in for a world of hurt. It leaves out significant details and aspects of server 200 that are need for a complete understanding of server 2000. Yes, what little detail and knowledge it prvides are accurate, but they are so few. Old Billy Gates again with a half attempt like everything he does. It seems their idea of common sense is: Well we charge $135 a test and sell the book for $45 and since they'll never pass the test on the first or second try then we'll make a bundle. Save your money and save your time. Buy the Sybex book for preparation for the test.
Good book.......2004-02-14
I used this book and Measure-up practice tests to prepare for 70-215 Windows 2000 exam. I found the book complete and to the point. I did pass the test. I recommend using this book in combination with such practice tests as Transcender and Measure-up - simply reading the book isn't enough. Make sure you take practice tests and fully understand the problem discussed in each question - why the right answers are right and why the wrong answers are wrong. This approach works; the only problem - it's time-comsuming...
An MCT that upgraded his MCSE in three weeks.......2003-12-24
I found this book to be the best written of its kind. I read a lot of technical books on the Windows OS and related subjects, and most of the time I find them lacking. I felt that this book covered the needed material, and included the study aids as well. I have already recommended this book to other MCSE's that need to upgrade their certification.
need supplementary material and practice tests.......2003-11-02
A big test.
Look for supplementary material for networking, group policy.
You will also need some practice tests. Try measureUP.

Consice and Comprehensive at That .......2004-09-18
Well, I was learning MS SQL with this book after I had some development experience with MySQL. This actually was the right book for me and I was able to quickly study those aspects of MS SQL that are different from MySQL. I was not only able to pass the exam but also acquired skills that I am currenty using on my job.
You know, I noticed that my fellow developers are trying to programm all database transactions with SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT and DELETE only. When they need to delete a record and all other records that are referenced from it they create a long list of quieries, which works, but is actully a time spent in vain because you can create a better, easier and FASTER solution by implementing only one feature available in MS SQL. So study this book and you will know how to deal with MS SQL Server correctly.
What is proof reading.......2004-08-23
I think the author did good but it all went to pot at the proofreaders. A typo, error, or omission in 1 out of 15 pages. I had to write stuff in and cross stuff out. It would throw the novice SQL person off on XML alone because of the thouroughly botched job between XML auto and XML raw and claiming that the ELEMENT phrase can be used with XML RAW which it can not. One of many errors. Buy the MS training book, read BOL, get transcenders, but stay clear of this unless you are a seasoned pro that can pick out the mistakes from the good stuff
Terrible Book.......2004-07-16
Of all the technical books I have read, this is probably by far the worst. There are many typos; errors where the book uses the wrong word and throws you off; and inconsistencies where the text says something then the answer to the practice question says something different. But additionally, the book covers some materials insufficiently to be at all useful, in other words it is too condensed. This book is not enough to pass the exam.
Pick another one.......2004-02-18
I gave this one star for effort. Everything else gets lost in the number of errors and the superficial coverage. There are more typing errors than my usual first draft, and the number of technical errors is completely unacceptable. In addition, since Coriolis is out of business, there is no errata information available (although downloading 400 Gig of corrections is not my idea of fun).
The IDEA of the book is good, and the CONCEPT of the test questions is very good, but the final product is probably not worth your time -- unless, of course, you want to use it as a testing system to see if you too can find the 3 or more errors on every page!!
The Osborne press "MCDBA SQL Server 2000 Database Design Study Guide" 0-07-212693-0 is a much better book (although it has SOME errors).
The Microsoft Press "SQL Server 2000 database design and implementation" book is excellent, and the errors found in rev 1 are already corrected in rev 2 of the book!! But, it is a 'learning' book, andt a 'cram' book.
Good luck on your exam.
not the best one ..........2002-08-23
I passed the exam but only because I got rid of this book and studied from MSDN a week before. The book covers most of the topics as if they were in a high school curriculum. I'd say if you are preparing for the MCSE/MCSD/MCP exam then DO NOT go by this book. But is fairly ok if you'd want an introduction to SQL Server 2000 before digging deeper into another detailed exam material.

MCSE Training Kit: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server will be popular among the next crop of Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) exam-takers, and Microsoft Press has done a great job of delivering what candidates will need. While considering the published objectives of the Windows 2000 Server certification exam (70-215), the authors present hundreds of operational details about the corporate network operating system. It's best as a learning aid, but this book packs in enough details to also serve as a reference for after the exam.
The basic unit of instruction is the lesson, which consists of a combination of explanatory prose and hands-on lab exercises that collectively take 30 to 60 minutes to absorb. A typical lesson deals with Organizational Units (OUs) in Active Directory. It explains what OUs are, how they benefit you, and the relationships among Active Directory objects in different containers. Precisely delineated procedures show what to do to find a user account in an Active Directory domain and move it to a different OU. Similar coverage, combining academic knowledge with practical experience, goes to everything else in the exam outline. Coverage of remote access is strong, as are the sections on network setup and monitoring. Chapters conclude with review questions in which you explain in your own words how you'd solve specific problems or meet particular requirements. --David Wall
Topics covered: The knowledge and procedures verified by the Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server exam (70-215), including installation, file system management, Active Directory Services, networking, general administration, and troubleshooting.
Book Description
This official MCSE TRAINING KIT teaches IT professionals how to install, configure, and administer the Windows 2000 Server operating system-as they prepare for the corresponding MCP exam. Topics include administering system resources such as printers, files and folders, applications, and Web sites; configuring and managing client computers, server computers, and other hardware devices and drivers; and optimizing the system components that provide high availability, load balancing, and disaster recovery capabilities. Students learn through an integrated system of skills-based tutorials and hands-on lab exercises. An economical alternative to classroom instruction, this kit enables students to set their own pace and learn by doing.

Possibly the worst book I have ever read.......2004-01-05
I have CCNA, A+, Network+, and WIn2k Pro. So I have some basic understanding to fall back on.
The main problem that I found with this book is that it lacked technical detail, it introduced a lot of terms without explaining them before hand, and in general this book is just terrible. I sort of have to go along with it for my class, but I will deviate to the All-In-One series for future exams. Personally I wouldn't waste my money of this book.
Yet another ambiguous book.......2003-10-30
This volume should only be used as a reference (at best) and not for exam preparation. I think Microsoft should stick to writing pamphlets that sell their products, and refrain from books explaining them. Many concepts are "introduced" at an advanced level, making the reader (me in this case) reread its passage and finally reference other books to get a clear notion of what this book is trying to relay. All in all, this book is a waste of time if you want to prepare for the 70-215 exam. CERT should issue a warning about reading it.
Sure miss Exam Cram series..........2002-11-30
...but this one can do the trick. Unfortunately, MS Press has been laborious in providing far more info than needed to pass the test. I work with Win2k Server daily and most things can be figured out by poking around so, really, they've gone overboard with this. If you want more info than you really need, get it.
I read it - I passed the test........2002-04-11
All I did to prepare for the test was read this book (took me about a month & a half), use the Transcender practice tests the week before the exam, and then cram a little the night before the test on some topics I was week on. I used Technet W2K Server documentation for the cramming. This book will get you there, but man, it's a lot of work.
Too advanced for some, not advanced enough for others.......2001-11-02
This is not an appropriate book for those just starting into networking without some basic knowledge to fall back upon. The book is clear about that position though as it states right in the beginning that it is for "IT Professionals working with 2000 Server or who plan to take the exam". It also states that it "Assumes a fundamental networking windows interface knowledge and BIOS settings and changing them".
Each chapter is followed by a lab exercise that helps the reader to apply the lessons learned in that chapter. The problem is that in order to install the Windows 2000 Server software and be able to do the lab exercise you need two computers that meet the minimum requirements for Windows 2000 Server. For most people they probable don't have two of them just sitting around.
A lot of people have complained that the book covered a lot of topics that were not on the exam. While this may have been the case, I think that it is a good thing. If you want something to make yourself another Microsoft clone who can pass an exam but not know anything about how to really do anything in the real world then get a book that focuses just on passing the exam and not one that has any additional information.
If all you want to do is pass the exam then look at something else like Transcender that does not require a Windows 2000 Server to learn on. This book is suited to study for the exam, but does have a lot of other additional information that a real administrator (as compared to a Microsoft Certified certificate holder) might need.
On the other hand, much of the information assumes a fairly strong knowledge of many networking topics. Many items are given in a cookbook fashion with a `how to do it' focus and little or no explanation as to why you would do it that way.
For most people this book is firmly in the middle ground; too much additional information for just test preparation, not enough detail for understanding true administration. Too much of one, not enough of the other. If this is where you are at in your knowledge level then it would be a good book. If you can afford only one book then it would be a good book. On the other hand there are better test preparation books and better administration book, but the cost is much higher for two books than one that is somewhere in the middle.
