Why not ALT.......2006-08-25
I suppose this is a good book. Typical Microsoft white paper with discussion related only to MS.
I've opted to take the CompTIA Security+ certification exam instead (it can be used in place of 70-298).
A must..........2006-08-21
I haven't read this yet. I'm still going through the XP book, but if this one is even close, this book is a must. An easy read and well laid out. The accompanying CDs are very beneficial also.
Horrible.......2005-07-27
Of the thousands of pages read preparing for one certification for another --- this is the worst book I have come across. Frankly I am so disapointed I may well not purchase another book from this publisher.
I am half way throught the 2nd section. I see no reason to continue...

Customer Reviews:
The BEST TRAINING KIT........2007-03-20
People interested in buying this book must know it is out of date. It was released in the age of Windows Server 2003, without service pack one. So it does not cover WSUS, but SUS. It also does not contain information about SP1 improvements and now SP2, however, it is a book about planning and implementing security strategies, which makes it a book above the time.
If you have money and are interest in security, or if you are intended to pass the exam, buy this book.
The text is clear and comprehensive. The content is pretty amazing which demonstrates de knowledgement of the author about what he writes. Such knowledgement is provenient from his experience working with Windows in exposed environments.
This is not only a theoretical guide of security, but also a practical one. The excercises hep you to understand and record it in your mind.
Finally, buy this book.
A must..........2006-08-21
I haven't read this yet. I'm still going through the XP book, but if this one is even close, this book is a must. An easy read and well laid out. The accompanying CDs are very beneficial also.
Excellent guide.......2006-02-14
Any book from Tony is probably going to be good. This book is no exception. It is very well written and organized. It covers all aspects of Windows Server 2003 security. It is not quite comprehensive as you'll need the earlier 2003 Server books (or know those topics well enough) to fully cover the test. It includes good chapter summaries and practice labs. This book will also be useful to you as a reference after you have passed the exam.
Best study guide I've read yet.......2005-08-10
This book is an excellent resource and preparation for the 70-299 exam. I've read through a lot of exam books over the years and this is the one that prepared me the best. Upon finishing this book, you feel as though you really understand the material, rather than feeling that you still have holes in your understanding, as you often do with other books. This book is comprehensive, well-laid out, and has a lot of good practice questions in the book and on CD. Microsoft Training Kit CDs are often quite meaty, and this is no exception. I highly recommend this book.
Did I read the same book as these other reviewers?.......2005-07-13
This book offers good coverage in some areas and fairly weak coverage in others. I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book should have been marketed as a study guide and not a training kit. It does contain some good to know nuggets of info, however it is far from being a complete guide on security, or preperation for the exam. I bought the book based on the reviews I read on this site and will be returning it. I can only guess that the previous reviewers work for MS Press.
On the 13th page of this book the author mentions how important the steps of kerberos authentication are, after giving an incorrect explanation of them and telling you to memorize them for the exam. (steps 1-3 are incorrect. check pg.245 of the Active Directory Technical Reference for an accurate description) Like most of the self-paced training kits from MS Press there is a certain lack of depth to the information in this book. There is alot of pertinent security information missing from this book both for the exam, and more importantly for securing a network in real life. The book seemed more like a conglomeration of useful facts for the exam than a "training guide".
A much better book in this arena is "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 PKI and Certificate Security" by Brian Komar with the Microsoft PKI Team -MS Press
I would also recommend the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory technical Reference. -MS Press
The two of these books combined will give you a complete and accurate base of information to pass this exam, and several others.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2004-04-06
This is a greate book. I studied the book and Transcender , pass the exam with room to spare. I strongly recommend this book
Decent tool to get you started..........2003-07-17
I have been doing Data Warehousing for about 18 months on SQL Server, primary 2000, but 7.0 is pretty much the same.
The toolkit, is not the best guide out there to prepare you for the exam, but there is nothing better than hands-on preparation for the Microsoft exams.
This toolkit is good to give you some very basic overviews on what Microsoft's approach to Data Warehousing is and how to approach a Data Warehouse project.
Remember, for the exam, this book alone will not give you a passing score.
A great step-by-step to use at work, an asset to pass exam........2001-08-17
I originally bought this book for two reasons. One, to pass an elective exam on my MCSD and second, to utilize on my current consulting job. This book did not let me down at all.
Combining this book with material from Transcenders, I passed the Microsoft exam with room to spare. More importantly though- it allowed me to start developing a data warehousing project on my current assignment.
The book is well written and goes step by step from the fundamentals to advanced DTS. In addition, there is additional exercises in the book that allow you to sharpen your skills with SQL and MDX.
BEWARE- THE CD'S IN THE BOOK ONLY WORK WITH NT 4.0. IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS PROFESSIONAL 2000, YOU MAY KISS OFF TO THE ADDITIONAL DATA AND TRIAL VERSIONS OF SQL SERVER ON THE CD'S THAT ARE PROVIDED. I HAVE MSDE LOADED- SO I COULD USE THE SAMPLES THAT THEY PROVIDED IN THE BOOK AT HOME.
In addition, I feel that Microsoft Press did an excellent job in providing the reader with in depth detail that is mandatory in building a successful data warehouse. Unlike the Oracle Press books that I have used- In my opinion- Microsoft Press goes beyond the surface of memorization of facts and provides the reasoning behind the content of the book that leads to a better level of understanding.
One other complaint-- the spine of the book couldn't keep the pages together under heavy use.
Good Book For Learning And Passing the Exam.......2001-04-28
This book was a great book. I have had 3 years of experience in data-warehousing, but after reading this book I was able to learn lot of new things. The exam is a tough one. I would recommend reading the entire book and then going through the transcender. By the way I passed the test.
With this and the Transcenders you too can pass!.......2001-02-09
I was very skeptical when I first purchased this book. It's got Microsoft's name on the spine, which through past experience has shown to mean insufficent information or even abundance of errors. I was plesantly surprised to find the information not only sufficient, but also well written and mildly entertaining. Now you won't curl up with a cup of coffee and enjoy this book like a novel, but it certainly won't strain you brain with each chapter. As with all Technical Certifications, hands on usage is the best possible way to learn, I recommend installing SQL Server and working through all the examples. The only draw back to this book is the set of example questions, they lack the teeth that the test will truly have. So if you have the cash, go get the Transcenders.
Good Luck!

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Book! Makes MPLS seem easy! LOTS of great pictures.......2005-01-04
This is a brilliant book, because Rick Gallaher makes MPLS very clear and easy to understand! The book is LOADED with LOTS of excellent diagrams, and Rick puts the whole thing together with great, simple, and clear explanations! Rick is also one of the few writers who clearly understand that over-engineering bandwidth does not solve the QoS problems! MOST EXCELLENT!!!
Not your average geek book.......2004-11-28
Alright, I'm not going to try and impress you with all my fancy-pants knowledge about MPLS, they are many more people smarter than I am about the subject. But, I read this book, and I liked it. It's hard material made easy. I would have liked some full color pictures and a glossy more textbook style format. But that's it. It takes the material seriously, and it could have used some more humor to add a bit of levity, but as I see it, this book isn't just a geek manual, it's a geek bible.
Complex but not complicated. .......2004-11-28
MPLS stands for Multiprotocol Label Switching. It is a complicated system of nodes, networks, allocations, routes, and databases. Rick Gallaher's Guide reads like a Spanish 101 textbook. Yes, it's great to know the difference between a physical, a data link, and network layers, but at the same time, it's a whole lot of material to take in at once. This isn't a book you can cram into your head in one sitting. It requires (as with Spanish 101) a semester to get it right. There are terms you have to practice. Acronyms you have to learn and whole slew of words that aren't exactly the easiest things to remember. That is a fault of the subject matter jargon and not the fault of the manual. Gallaher's Guide is a solid learning tool, and I think would work perfectly with a mentor or as part of an intructional class. By itself, it's more like reading a spanish textbook, without ever hearing the language spoken.
Wicked Intense Training Manual.......2004-11-28
This is a wicked intense manual. I was given this book as a holiday gift last year, and I found it to be very intense and full of good metaphors and intelligent information. This year, I'm using the book as a training guide fro the students in my class starting in January. And I've asked for another copy for the holidays (this time to highlight allt he important analogies!)
Intelligent AND Enjoyable!.......2004-09-13
Having read DOZENS of IT textbooks and glossaries and how-to guides, and knowing intimately the miserable vacuum that IT books tend to comprise (in terms of both rigid didactics and MENSA-marinated peacock preening), I will say that "Rick Gallaher's MPLS Training Guide" presents a welcome alternative -- finally. While there is (and will be) much more to discover about MPLS than is discussed in this primer, the beauty of this book is that the reader doesn't have to endure hundreds of pages of arrogance in order to learn something. Gallaher respects both the reader and the learning curve -- as though he's sharing the information because he believes that it should be shared, rather than revealing it because the reader knows some secret handshake -- and manages successfully to sidestep the self-indulgence and garish elitism that so often sinks IT books. In dismantling the us-them barrier between MPLS concepts and newcomers, Rick Gallaher has put some oxygen into the process of IT learning.

Customer Reviews:
"Two thumbs down.".......2006-12-15
Generally, MS-Press Self Paced Second Edition books are good. Especially they did a great job on 290 and 291. This book, however, is an exception. This book does not cover many exam areas at all, and I am not talking nuances. There is no mentioning in this book about PKI certificate archival (new feature in Server 2003 family, well tested on 293 exam), or the GC placement, and several other areas. Those subjects that are covered in the book, are not covered in depths, in fact, they look like poor summaries and will not prep you for the exam in any way, nor will they prepare you for real life situations. Author jumps around same topics and is not able to clearly explain most of them. Practices are not worth installing a fresh copy of Server. There are no good "Exam Tips", like in other MS-Press books. I doubt that Craig actually took this exam.
I understand that no exam preparation book alone is enough to prepare for the exam, but those that I read so far, did a pretty good job on it. I was able to ACE several Microsoft exams using Self Paced guides and Testout videos.
This book tried to trick me into thinking that 293 exam was peace-of-cake. It is not! Do not be fooled. Exam is probably as hard as 291. It may seem easier after taking 291, but without that preparation 293 would be close to impossible to pass for the first time. Yes, it is in some ways similar to 291, but it covers whole bunch of different topics, and focuses on a different agenda. This book will not help you pass the exam. Book is a joke.
Not comprehensive, but definitely worthwhile.......2006-11-08
I currently have my MCSA with relatively little experience(comparatively speaking). Therefore, I knew I needed to be thorough with my reading for this particular test. A lot of what's in here is stuff I've never dealt with hands on(ie Clusters, NLB, RRAS, and CA). That said, I figured the most comprehensive route would be LearnKey training videos coupled with a cover to cover reading of this book. I've heard the second edition of these books are much better. While this book does do a very good job covering all the exam topics, it's fatal flaw is that it mentions nearely nothing about dealing with legacy systems within a AD Infrastructure. I was horrified to discover about 10-15% of the questions(and even a simulation) that require you to maintain support for NT4 and Windows 98 clients while simultaneously requiring you to meet the requirements for security or GPO assignments. The book only mentions these OS's in passing really, and says nothing regarding how you handle these scenarios. Needless to say, I was very unprepared for these questions despite a good solid month and a half of comprehensive preparation. However, I did pass with a 775, and if you can find something else to make up for this lapse in coverage(be it experience or another book), you can ace the exam with a thorough reading of this book. Just don't skip the practice questions at the end! They may be tedious and not be anything like the actual exam questions, but they actually do a very good job focusing you on the things you should know for the exam.
Average customer rating:
- Good coverage, but needs more depth
- Not Recommended. There are much better CISSP books than this one.

Good coverage, but needs more depth.......2006-05-16
I used this book along with Shon Harris' DVD set and passed the exam on the first try. There are several typos and a few mistakes that may not be obvious to some. If this book went a little deeper on theory it would be a 5 star book in my opinion.
Bottom line, do not rely on a single source for this exam. I am usually quick on exams, but took almost to whole 6 hours. Having the book on PDF and sample tests (both computer based and in the back of the book) raised this from 3 to 4 stars.
Not Recommended. There are much better CISSP books than this one........2005-11-18
Dear All, I recently completed my CISSP review studies, passed the exam, and completed the CISSP endorsement process. This is a very worth while endeavor and, as someone with many years of Internet security and risk management experience, I highly recommend the CISSP certification process for everyone. Reviewing the 10 common bodies of knowledge (CBK) has value for everyone in the IT business and I am very pleased to have taken the time to review the material and complete the exam. For my self-study review, I purchased four books via Amazon: (1) The CISSP Pre Guide - Gold Edition by Ronald L. Krutz and Russell Dean Vines, (2) All-In-One CISSP Exam Guide, Third Edition by Shon Harris, (3) Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam by Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare, and (4) CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg. Each of these texts came with a CDROM for practicing test questions on a Windows PC and covered the 10 CISSP CBKs. I found the first three CISSP books in my list to be helpful. Of those three, the most helpful was The CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition by Krutz and Vines. This book is concise, well written, and easy to read. The CDROM is excellent and nearly error free. The text is well thought out and informative. I also recommend Shon Harris' book, with reservation. I found it hard to get to the required CISSP information, at times, due to the attempts at humor in the book. The CDROM of sample test questions were also very good, albeit not as rich in features as the book by Krutz and Vines. The Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam by Susan Hansche, John Berti and Chris Hare was a disappointment. This book read just like a cut-and-paste from the Internet and other documents; and the companion CDROM was full of errors and omissions. After a while I stopped using this text book and focused on the first two. I am sorry to say that CISSP Certified Information Security Professional Training Guide by Roberta Bragg was a complete disappointment from every perspective. The CDROM example tests were riddled with errors and omissions. For those interested in my self-study technique, I took each book and studied one (sometimes two) of each of the CBK chapters each day. Then, I repeated the same process for each of the other books, except for the book by Bragg, which was dropped for reasons mentioned. I took all the sample tests repeatedly, before and after and then again. I must have practiced between 4000-5000 sample questions. It was challenging and enjoyable. In summary, I highly recommend Krutz and Vines and also recommend, with reservation, the book by Shon Harris. No single book can cover the entire CBK of the CISSP. The more you study, the better. Best of luck on your CISSP studies. The CISSP is certainly an experience that will improve your knowledge of the field of IT security and benefit the profession at-large.
CISSP Just passed.......2004-09-20
I just took the CISSP on September 12th, 2004 in Orlando. I just got word that I passed. I used Ms. Bragg's book as my primary study material. I also used the All-In-One book as well but the Bragg book was my main source of study. One thing that was very helpful for me was the Fast Facts section. I sat over breakfast the morning of the exam and did some last minute study over this section. This is a great book!!! I've used the QUE Certification books as my primary study for the A+ and Network+ exams and passed them all on the first time around. They allways have the fast facts section which is so helpful.
My choice to teach by.......2004-08-30
I use this book to teach test prep courses for my customers and it works great. I've reviewed the other CISSP books - from the perspective of an instructor and of a student - and this one seems to be the most user friendly of them all. Lots of good practice questions too.
Good reading, great 'domain' explenations........2004-03-19
I'm preparing for the CISSP, so I do have a few different books lying around (CISSP Examination Textbooks by S Vallabhaneni = Awful reading, but good factual references; CISSP Prep Guide: Gold Edition by Krutz & Vines = Good reading, Great questions and decent references) and this book.
After having done a few 'domains' with the Krutz/Vines book I switched to this guide (available on O'Reilly's Safari site). I like the style of the chapters, the way the domains are covered, the topics are well explained, yet it is lacking on factual details. One strong point is the author's use of sample case situation to emphasis the review points.
Over the past week, this book has become my first approach to each domain, using the Krutz/Vines as a very quick checkup before trying the questions from the CISSP Prep Guide.
According to me, the preperation for the CISSP cannot be based solely on a single book. So I do recommend using this CISSP Training Guide as the center stage for training. As the title says it's a Guide, and will put down the right foundations for each domain. Then you could pick information in other books that have more details. I would also highly recommend to anyone preparing for the CISSP, to take the time to supplemented the knowledge by doing searches on the internet for supporting documentation, which Roberta Bragg gives as URL pointers at the end of each chapter.

Good book for passing the exam.......2005-11-04
This was my primary resource in preparations for the exam, which I passed easily. Material is well presented, although I have found several mistakes and there are a lot of superfluous "lesson reviews" and "lesson summaries" at the end of each lesson.
In my opinion, the best parts of this book are practices and troubleshooting labs. I have set up a little virtual network on my PC (using Virtual PC and Virtual Server), and have done all of them. They really help you gain some practice using Active Directory tools under Windows. I had 2 questions on my exam in which one had to demonstrate practical knowledge of using these tools, and I have heard that Microsoft will add them more.
Technically very clear and to the point, but lacks all the info.......2005-07-31
This book is pretty good along the lines of technical manuals. It keeps the information clear and lays it out in a way that makes it easy to understand with no fillers added. The activities at the end of the book are a little much, so I mostly ignored them. Unfortunately one thing this book lacks is ALL the information you might be tested for on the exam. For example, the book does not go into detail on the Authorization Manager. The new revisions might but check the ones you buy for it. Mine did not have it, however the software that came with the book asked questions on these different utilities that weren't covered in the book at all. It was a little suprising to be honest. But overall it was a good book.
Far too many technical inaccuracies.......2005-06-30
I'm sick of reading reviews about how a particular study guide is a good book for beginers. The title says exam 70-294, but this book falls a bit short. It gives basic coverage of active directory concepts and is technically inacurate in many areas. If your going to spend the time trying to learn this stuff, learn it right. A much better book on the subject matter is the active directory technical reference for windows server 2003, also by MS Press. In fact save some time and money... Just buy the technical reference. It will prepare you for both the 70-294 and 70-297 exams. Belive me, the only reason I read this book (70-294 self paced study guide)after reading the technical reference is because I was forced to teach a course from it.

Excellent book for those new to AD.......2005-04-17
The authors and editors of this book deserve a pat on the back for a job well done. Anyone who is new (and some people not so new) to Active Directory can benefit from reading this book. From the start the book comes out strong. No worthless filler here; just logically organized, to the point text, diagrams and screen shots that help the reader understand AD from top to bottom. I like this book so well that I regularly purchase it for my consulting clients in need of a better understanding of AD. This book is a winner and a valuable resource even for those not studying for the exam.
Morons.......2005-03-16
OK, for the 2 of you above you complain about the lack of ISA info etc to help you through 70-291.. READ THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK!!!!! IT IS FOR 70-294!!!! Anyway, great book, covers all the topics.. and yes, I would say you need a little more then foundational knowledge to pass ANY of the exams...

Good Resource for XML Editing.......2006-06-01
I have found "Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft VB.NET" an invaluable tool in XML editor development. It is quite detailed about accessing and manipulating XML data.
More confusing.......2006-02-04
I was reading it as first book for most of the topics, It was total waste of time to read it.
Might help if you are already well expreinced with .NET but not for beginner
Very Poorly Written.......2005-09-07
Judging by the positive reviews, this book must have some merit but it is certainly not in the quality of its writing or its accuracy. Perhaps the editor was reassigned to Longhorn duties. Here are some examples of what you can expect in the first two chapters:
"A COM+ component exists in three states: exists and activated, exists and not activated, and nonexistent."
"The pool objects are not destroyed even after their release from the client application. COM+ retains the destroyed object in the pool for recycling..."
" If the value of the CanStop property is set to False, the SCM does not pass the Stop command to the service application."
It's main value to me is as a syllabus. You can use it to direct your search for better explanations on MSDN and, of course, everyone should have Troelsen's "C# and the .NET Platform" which is the best textbook I have read. Ever.
If you find this book useful, don't take the exam yet........2005-04-12
It is at a very basic level. It can be useful for starting in XML webservices, but not enough for the exam.
Some information is outdated.
It has errors. So does the practice test.
Doesn't cover at least one topic which is in the practice test.
The practice test doesn't tell you what is considered the correct answer.
If you find this book useful, you're not yet prepared for the exam.
Very Poor.......2004-11-16
While some chapters are readable, others are very poor (remoting) and some examples just do not work.

For those interested not just in passing a certification exam but in truly understanding what makes networks tick, Network+ Certification Study System won't disappoint. Authored by one of the subject matter experts who helped create the Network+ exam, Joseph J. Byrne, this book is an excellent guide not only to the test but to the underlying principles of computer networks.
This two-part book includes an excellent glossary with basic explanations of networking-related items. Byrne's definition of a local area network (LAN) is a good example: "A LAN is a communications system much like a telephone system except that data, not voices, is usually shared. In recent years, the term network is often substituted when describing a LAN." Then there are sections that cover specific areas more fully, like the one on basic Ethernet concepts. It explains the data speeds at which Ethernet operates, explains that Ethernet breaks data into frames, and then details how each frame must be between 72 and 1,518 bytes and how you can tailor the size of the frame to improve network performance.
The book also discusses strategies for implementing a backup system, protecting the network from viruses, and troubleshooting. Byrne encapsulates his approach here, "This entire [troubleshooting] process is really twofold. First you need to get at the root of the problem, and second you need to fully document the process from problem to resolution." Each of the chapters ends with an exam preparation summary and a series of questions, the answers for which are provided in appendix 1. The chapters are also studded with exam prep pointers, which highlight those topics certain to be covered in the Network+ test. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt
Topics covered: Local and wide area networks; Ethernet; Token Ring; various cabling specifications; the OSI model; TCP/IP; remote access; network security; and how to install and maintain routers, hubs, and print servers.
Book Description

This Book's More of a Liability Than An Asset.......2004-11-10
I purchased this book as a secondary reference but it contains so many blatant errors that it's become more of a liability than a resource. I've searched for errata online but couldn't find any, suggesting that the publisher isn't willing to offer help to beleaguered users. What's especially disconcerting is that this volume was authored by "a member of the i-Net+ exam objectives team" which made it sound like an authoritative resource. Typos are expected in something as dry as an IT resource but explanations that build on obviously incorrect information make you question the author's long list of credentials.
Excellent Core Network + Exam Guide.......2002-01-12
I tested and passed the Network + exam yesterday and this book was my central study guide for the exam. The book contains a lot of information for 275 pages. The book provides step by step insight into networking which results in a mental framework of how various network types, topoligies and protocols work. The enclosed BeachFront Quizzer is a big help too! If you are inexperienced at networking you may also find it helpful to purchase The Encyclopedia of Networking by Osborne-McGraw Hill and TCP/IP Clearly Explained by Pete Loshin of Byte Magazine, and NT Server 4.0 by Osborne-McGraw Hill. These books will provide a greater level of comprehensive information, such as how individual routing protocols work, cable properites, etc.
A solid foundation (but not the whole building).......2001-08-15
Joseph Byrne's study guide is an excellent introduction to local area networking. The author writes with uncommon clarity and the material is comprehensive (if occasionally lacking in detail), focusing not only on technology but also on the "soft skills" and best practices of network technicians, the sorts of things that get and keep you employed. Any novice to the field should seriously consider this book as his or her starting point.
That said, I don't believe that this book alone will prepare anyone without significant experience to pass the Network+ exam (especially the 2001 objectives). It is Windows-centric and core concepts such as the OSI model, IP addressing, and name resolution demand more detail. And yes, as other reviewers have said, there are a few irritating typos. Despite these irritations, the book and bundled CD were very useful during my certification preparation, and they'll probably help you, too.
Well worth the price.......2000-06-03
This book is very well written and easy to understand. This is the only book I used to prepare myself for the exam. The exam pointers and practice questions were very helpful. The book covers just about all material on the exam, I only encounterd one question on the exam that wasn't covered in the book. Anyone that spends the time to read this book inside and out should pass the exam. I passed with an 89%.
FAILING GRADE.......2000-04-13
DO NOT get this book if you want to pass the exam. I took the exam and received a 78. I researched the questions that I missed and none of the material was covered in Joseph Byrne's book. Buy the Network+ Study Guide by David Groth since all of the questions that I missed were covered in it. I wasted $40 on Mr. Byrne's book, $140 on the exam, and three months of studying.

This is a well written and well presented book. It helps the reader decide which options are most appropriate to his/her scenario and includes lots of new information relevant to Windows Server 2003.
The book goes beyond the bare minimum information needed to pass the exam and instead offers lots of additional tips and useful pieces of information which the authors have no doubt acquired through their years of experience in the world of designing Active Directory solutions.
Thoroughly recommended!
