My last hope for the test.......2007-09-05
I read other comments for this book that make me buyed..I hope so, but
this is not a cover all Windows book..So those optimistics comments for the test results, looks too good to be the truth..
I will comeback for comments after I pass or not the test.
Thanks
Great study guide.......2007-08-23
This book is a big help. It comes with awesome free practice testing software that you would normally pay lots of money for. I highly recommend this book.
Fairly standard MS test prep book.......2007-08-09
I find the book very useful as a guide but by no means an exclusive means of effective test preparation. The included CD's are also of marginal use. The sample tests are decent as well.
Great Technical learning investment.......2007-03-09
I am still studying the Self Paced Training Kit from Microsoft, and getting so much information out of it. It's a challenging coarse, and it's very informational. It's also bringing up solutions to quistions I've had.And getting you prepared for the technical inviroment we will be working in. I would recomend this coarse for anyone that is interested in a help desk career and the technical information it gives you. A definate 5 star coarse.
MCDST Self-Paced Training Kit 70-271.......2007-02-18
I recently purchased this book with CDs to prepare for the 70-271 exam. After reading the book and working from the CDs, I passed the exam on the first try. It required learning all of the 146 practice questions, then the 311 Measure-Up questions. My only frustration was that the CD questions cover all sorts of topics about Windows 98 to XP issues (dual-boot, etc.) and the exam is much more "Up-To-Date." However, the book without the questions would not have prepared me at all for the exam.

MCDST 70-272 Book.......2007-08-23
This book, combined with the 70-271, and the practice exams included on the CD's were the best resource in helping to understand and pass the exam. Even more so then class time!
Shipping stinks.......2007-05-14
The item I received was in good shape, but it arrived over a week after Amazon's date of arrival. There is no reason why an item should arrive a week late.
Good As A Reference Guide As Well...........2007-04-18
I've been an A+ Certified Technician since 2001, but this book really gave me the edge I needed to fully understand more about Windows XP Pro and Microsoft Office hands-on installations, configurations, troubleshooting, securing and networking with other computers in a corporate setting.
I haven't taken the test for MCP yet, but this volume certainly has me ready to do so any day now, if you're looking to learn Windows XP Pro and MS Office 2003, drop everything you're reading and buy this book, and also, keep it real handy after you are "done" studying it, because is very useful as a reference book as well. I Hope this review will be helpful.
Bloody awesome.......2006-05-13
I took my test today and came close to maxing out, 972....study hard the reviews at the end of the book. When taking the test, read the questions AND answers carefully, kind of like the old school days, an answer may "look" right but it could be one word off. Keep the books, don't resell them, I've already gone back into 70-271 and reviewed a few things. handy to have on hand when you deal with it every day. Very thorough in my opinion. Just a humble IT geek working on his certs.....
WOW Great deal and Super Helpful.......2006-05-09
I just took this certification and found out that some of test questions were the same as the back of this book. If you go through the test bank in the back of the book and go through the lessons your sure to pass. The book also comes with 180 day trials of xp pro sp2 and office 2003 professional. Not to meantion you get a voucher for 15% off the exam. I will warn you that some of the exam questions are very easy and others are super tricky.

Very Helpful Book.......2007-05-27
This book the MCDST Study Guide "DELUXE EDITION" which is the second edition of MCDST Study Guide, is really helpful and updated in order of studying it and taking the exams, it contains a cd with test / exams and flashcards wich are really helpfull= for revising the chapters. If you are willing to take the exams i recommend you to buy the deluxe edition because its an updated version, dont buy the previous edition. Some of the questions included on the CD are pretty similar with questions in the exams. I did pass the exams studying this book and thats why i recommend it! Dont forget that taking the exams requires also a bit of experience:)
Great review book, but know it thorougly.......2007-01-27
I just passed the 271 with an 899 and the 272 with a 916. This book was my only study resource, but I have been working with the XP OS on-the-job for four years.
The difficulty of the test comes from Microsoft's method of testing. Even though I did very well, I only had "warm fuzzies" with half of the questions as I was taking the test, because they really run your brain through the wringer. So, you must understand why all of the other choices are clearly wrong and only one is right, and this entails knowing the material thoroughly.
The only problems I had with the book are is the horrible amount of typos and strange program behavior with the practice tests, and the lack of anything other than multiple-choice questions.
Other than that, get hands-on training, read this book over and over, and be careful with the wording of questions on the actual exams.

Excellent resource for obtaining the Desktop certification. Will recommend this series to someone who is serious about becoming Microsoft certified for desktops. Thanks.
Helped me pass the exam.......2007-07-03
These books were easy to read. I loved the pullout fact sheets. I read through them just before the exams. I did both practice test in each book. I read the books cover to cover without confusion and I passed both exams on my first try.
XP Pro.......2007-01-03
These books are very good, and will help anyone who wants a Microsoft certification. Microsoft certifications help in obtaining high paying, quality jobs.
Good work for hte new exams........2004-09-22
Microsoft's release of the MCDST Certification has you taking 2 exams, 70-271 and 70-272.What you need is something to use as a final study tool and this set is just the right answer. What you have here is a fairly complete breakdown of the exam objective condensed for easy reading.
No technical manual is usually fun to read since the material is technical, however these 2 books are easy to follow and the reading level is set for the experience technician. Understand that manual(s) is a scaled down finer points set of text, and you will need other resources in order to pass the exam.
The 70-271 book was a little more informative and I found it had information that lapped over to the other exam. As with other EC2 manuals, there is the Cram sheet in front and the cd in the back. This set uses the Measure UP test engine, which could use a few updates and more questions as well as a way to up[date on the web.
Fixing the test engine is a minor draw back and this book should help in the final prep. Overall well put together and researched
Book Description
The new Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) credential proves that you have the skills to successfully support end users and successfully troubleshoot desktop environments running on Windows XP. MCDST candidates must pass two core exams (70-271 and 70-272). The 70-271 exam, when combined with the 70-272 (the application exam for desktop support technicians), validates that a candidate can successfully answer (or escalate) all calls from end users. Co-written by best-selling author Dan Balter, the MCDST 70-271 Exam Cram 2 gives readers the essential information they need to know to pass this exam, focusing on exactly what they need to know. This book can be used as a sole study guide for those experienced with Windows XP or it is the perfect supplement guide for more comprehensive training materials, instructor-led classes, and/or computer-based training.

Pretty Good.......2007-05-08
I passed the test so I guess that means the book worked. It was actually supplemental material. My first choice is always Sybex. This is a decent book, it went too much into the Remote Installation for what I had on the test but the test may be different for you.
Good, but problematic...........2006-09-23
I just passed my 70-271 exam and I do believe this book was an important factor in my score. However this book is problematic.
1.) The MeasureUp practice exam questions are 50 of the same questions found in the Microsoft Press book for the same exam. But that book has 261 more questions than this one.
2.) The questions in the book are far more difficult than necessary and many are more appropriate for the MCSA/MCSE exam 70-270.
3.) There are too many typographic errors to name. The major ones have been mentioned by other reviewers.
4.) There is no information on service pack 2.
I intend on using my MCDST credentials as an elective exam for the MCSA, so I appreciate the difficulty of the questions but by attempting to attain an 85% to 90% on the practice exams in the back of this book I had thoroughly convinced myself that I would fail the test and was very close to rescheduling it. I did not, and I passed my test with more than 200 point over the minimum score.
To this books credit I have found the information very useful in my job. I have received several calls from users with processor affinity problems or with 16 bit program errors that I know how to solve immediately because of the high standards set by the questions in this book. I am, therefore, very satisfied with my purchase.
Don't use this book as a primary study guide.......2006-07-30
There's a lot of unnecessary info in this book that you won't even see on the exam. The practice questions in the book are way too wordy and confusing. Exam Cram has helped me in the past, but not this time.
Don't buy this book, it's awful........2005-12-12
I believe my email to the editor explains it all. I have copied and pasted it below.
Mr. Tittel,
I have been a huge fan of your Exam Cram books for the last few years and they have helped me pass my A+, Network+, and CCNA certifications. Currently I am working of my MCDST certification and bought your books expecting the same standards your other books hold. Unfortunately, your Exam 70-271 Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Windows XP operating System is not only a disgrace to your line of books, but to you as the editor. I have to ask; did you even read the book or edit it? There are too many spelling and grammatical errors to even list in this book. Many times it should say drive, and instead it says driver or vice versa. You have many of the wizards name's wrong, such as on page 200 first line under Migrating User Settings with the File Settings and Transfer Wizard it says "The File Settings and Transfer (FAST) Wizard." The funny thing is it's the File and Settings Transfer Wizard, otherwise FAST makes no sense the way it is printed and if that's not bad enough on page 201 you have a screenshot of the wizard showing it's correct name. The questions you ask in this book also are horrendous because they contradict what is true or just make no sense. Here is an example of a contradiction. Earlier in the book it says Windows XP can't be upgraded from Windows 95, this is true, but then in question 6 on page 213 it says "After upgrading a group of computers running Windows 95 to Windows XP Professional." See something wrong there? Here is an example of a question making no sense. Look at question 23 on page 336. The question asks for the Power User group and the Administrator group, so logically and correctly the answer should be A, but no you have it as answer C which is the same exact thing as A but leaves out the Administrator group so it would be wrong. In conclusion I must say this was one of the most poorly written and poorly edited books I have ever read. So please, revise this book immediately and get any remaining ones of the shelves because most people are furious about this, you should check out the reviews on Amazon.com and elsewhere.
Good book, relevant material.......2005-09-15
Overall it was a good book withs lots of relevant material. I actually learned some things about XP that I was not already aware of. I haven't taken the test yet, but with the included Cheat Sheet and CDROM, I think I will be well prepared.
Book Description
Written by a veteran in the field, this book presents a concise overview of the Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician certification exams, covering both the Operating Systems (70-271) and the Applications (70-272) tests. In addition to reviewing the credential and explaining how to prepare psychologically for each test, the book specific addresses each exam objective as stated by Microsoft. It encompasses the installation, configuration, troubleshooting of operating systems and software applications, addressing hardware devices and drivers, user environments, customization, and application security. In a clear and efficient manner, the book incorporates both the detailed instructions that newcomers want and the "quick-and-dry" facts needed by those familiar with the certification process. The accompanying CD-ROM offers computer-based practice tests so readers can become comfortable with the CBT format of the exam.
Customer Reviews:
Be Wary!!.......2006-08-28
Many mistakes in this book. Many wrong answers. Many right answers but wrong explanations.
More misses than hits.......2005-09-26
I've been working in the IT field for 20 years, there are too many wrong answers in this book! In some cases the explanation for the answer shows that the editor or writer told you the wrong answer. How can you study and be sure you are getting the right answers for the upcoming tests? Don't get this.
Good Resource but lacking for the Applications Exam.......2005-09-06
This is a good resource, I wish it did not have as many mistakes as it did. The mistakes are easily spotted.
I wish the second part of the book was covered much better, too many references to other books for a little more detail, it does not provide enough preparation for the applications exam and wished the CD had different questions than the practice questions in each of the chapters.
Definitely a secondary resource is required.
too many mistakes.......2005-09-01
There are more than a handful of mistakes in this book... in a few cases, the information provided is just plain wrong (i.e. pg 82 "Unlike compressed folders and files, which can be configured to display in an alternate color, you don't know at a glance which folders or files are encrypted."
I guess you can't tell if you are color blind!
good enough for some of the stuff.......2005-08-22
passed the 070-271 on Friday 8/19 and am taking 70-272 on 8/24. Did need some other resources and the book does have a few mistakes in it as well, but they are easily noticed. not bad overall i guess

Customer Reviews:
This is the old version.......2007-02-02
Just so you know, this is the old version. The new version came out in 2006. Don't buy this book unless you need to because it costs less than the new version.
Sybex falls tragically short this time.......2006-08-08
Sybex normally has a reputation of being THE book to study to prepare for your exam of choice. Unfortunately this one falls well below of my expectations. I've been in the IT industry for a few years now, and even I found this book to be a difficult read. Many times, the elements presented dont follow a logical sequence, making it necessary to flip back and forth among chapters to gain the proper perspective. This book often calls reference to items you'll learn in future chapters, which can be confusing when the authors throw acronyms at you that you dont understand.
Also, I find the review questions in this book rely solely on your memorization of the material studied, but not on APPLYING that knowledge to a real-life scenario, which is really what you will be tested on (applied knowledge). The review CD that comes with the book is equally uneffective. It does have a feature where you can re-review all the end-of-chapter questions, along with a "flash card" program of about 300 fill in the blank, and true/false questions, but again; these are strictly memorization, and doesnt really help when presented with a problem thats not in the book.
After finishing the 70-271 section, and answering all the book questions, I downloaded another test resource and was blown away with how much I still did not know. I really cannot recommend this book, I really should start reading reviews before I blow 60 bucks. Try the Microsoft Press books, they're more expensive, but well worth it. At least you'll walk away with a feeling of actually being prepared for the test. But of course, these are just my thoughts. Good luck to all the techies in getting your certs!
Too many errors.......2006-05-03
I purchased the first edition of this book nearly two years ago (before the Deluxe Edition) to prepare for the MCDST certification. Unfortunately, I found that many of the 100+ excercises were missing procedural steps or were just flat out wrong (ex. page 360/excercise 9.4). Usually after discovering that a study guide is full of errors and vague explanations I toss the book aside along with anything else ever written by the author. But I have examined other study guide material written by Bill Ferguson and I am convinced he is a competent instructor. I guess the editors of the first edition were in a rush to meet the release date for the 1st edition and did a cursory reading of the manuscript. Hopefully, the errors of the 1st edition have been corrected in the revised Deluxe Edition.
Good, for the price.......2006-03-14
The MCDST Study Guide is a good value for the money. I would like to see more questions at the end of the chapters and for them to show more print screens of the topics instead of just telling you that you will need to know this for the exam.
But to get two study guides, in one book, that tells you what you really do need to know for the exams, is worth the price and is a bargain.
Didn't cover enough material.......2005-03-04
I placed an advance order for this book two months prior to release based on past experience with Sybex products. I took 70-271 using only this book (and considerable work experience). I did pass the test (830), but there were several questions on the exam that the book had not addressed at all. I am apprehensive about how well the book will prepare me for 70-272 and I'm considering purchasing additional material. Looking at the reviews on this website, the Timothy L. Warner book appears to be a much better product.

This book can be used as a sole study guide for those experienced with Windows XP or it is the perfect supplement guide for more comprehensive training materials, instructor-led classes, and/or computer-based training.

Deeply insufficient.......2005-12-28
My IT background: ten years as a Unix admin, pursuing a Master's degree in Telecom. Extensive familiarity with desktop OS's and apps both as a user and LAN admin.
Newcomers to IT hoping to use this book as a primary study source will be disappointed.
I scored a 754 on 70-272 (700 is passing). The Exam Cram helped a bit in focusing which aspects of the Office, Outlook, and IE GUIs with which to become familiar. However, entire topics on the exam were completely unaddressed by this book ("Security Center", GPOs). Moreover, The book was apparently written before XP SP2 was released; the test requires knowledge of SP2 features.
Use As Back Up to Your Other Study Guide "ONLY".......2005-04-08
I will say that I am a fan of ExamCram2 Series of Study Guides, and that is what they are: "Study Guides". I was disappointed about the lack of material in this guide, do not rely on this book to pass the 70-272 Exam. If you pass the test just by reading this book you may have all ready had enough knowledge to pass. This book does not cover all the material in the exam by any means. The MeasureUp testing software is nice to get you use to the way some of the exam questions are. I would use this book to just go over questions and answers before you do a final write. I highly suggest to get Microsoft 70-272 Training Kit if you are new to alot of the material covered by this exam.
Needs a little more meat........2004-07-24
I recently became involved in a project to setup a course for the 2 new MCDST exam, 70-271 and 70-272. These new exams appear to give you an entry in the Microsoft arena with out requiring a full blown MCSE track. The book takes the finer points of the objectives and breaks it down in to 9 chapters.
The 70-272 exam is focused on the application side of XP and with that this book shows you a lot of customizing, optimizing, configuration and troubleshooting. You'll cover XP, email, Office and the internet and the book includes 2 complete practice exams.
The book has a cd rom with the Measure UP testing engine, but there should be more questions included. Overall this should be on the list of material to use in the study process.
Not enough depth.......2004-07-11
This book provides a good high level overview of the material. The main shortcoming is that it makes statements like "make sure you know this or that" but doesn't explain or provide examples. I took the test and passed, but don't think this book contributed a lot to my success. This book is worth a read, but don't rely on it.
Not Enough.......2004-07-01
The book had a lot of useful information, however it did not really go indepth on any of the subjects. I wish the book had given more examples or details on the topic. It provided only 145 questions, compared to other books for the test that provided over 300. I gave the book 3 stars because it is a useful study guide that can fit into my purse so I can take it everywhere. I would suggest reading something more in depth first.

Book Description
The Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) certification is used by technicians to prove their Windows XP troubleshooting skills. It is used by many new technicians to break into the field and by some to improve their marketability as a Help Desk technician. The two exams used to get this certification (70-271 & 70-272) cover a wide set of objectives that can be difficult for even seasoned technicians to cover on their own. How do they ensure that they are ready for the tests? This book is designed to help testing candidates focus on their weak areas by presenting questions on each area covered by the tests. With this knowledge, candidates can use their time more efficiently in preparing for each exam.
