Study Guide to accompany Introduction to Management Science: Quantitative Approaches to Decision Making
ASIN: 0324202318 |
Book Description
ASW's Introduction to Management Science: A Quantitative Approach to Decision Making provides thorough, application-oriented coverage in a very readable writing style. This is the leading text on the market. Simply put, it's a classic! The problem-scenario approach introduces quantitative procedures through situations that include both problem formulation and technique application. The extensive linear programming coverage includes problem formulation, computer solution, and practical application. The text covers transportation, assignment, and the integer programming extension of linear programming, as well as advanced topics like waiting line models, simulation, and decision analysis. A large selection of problems includes self-test problems with complete solutions and case problems. Excel spreadsheet appendices are included as well.
Customer Reviews:
Good program with textbook.......2007-08-22
I had to use this text for a sophmore level management science course. While the book is extensively detailed, it is written for graduate school level course work. The program that comes with the text is much more useful for the undergrad student tackling business statistics.
Graduate Students Guide.......2006-03-10
This book is an essential guide for every graduate student. It makes mathematical and technical concepts of management science understandable and useful.
Good college textbook.......2006-02-25
This book provides thorough explanations, good tables, graphs, examples and self-test questions with most of the answers in the back of the book.
katz.......2005-04-19
Trust Me. This is the only book that you'll need to get started started in this area. The authors have done an excellent job in producing such a work, that takes care to explain all the details of management science.
I used this text for my professional exams (CIMA) and the it was great. All the chapters in this book are cleanly written to take that I doesn't leave anything unexplained. However, the following chapters are the ones that I like the most in this book:
1. Introduction to LP
2. LP: Sensitivity Analysis: Amazing work here.
3. LP Applications: formulation of problems in this chapter may be bit difficult at first, but keep reading and you'll learn and appreciate the work that the authors have put in.
4. LP - Simplex Method: My favorite chapter. Is highly readable. This one chapter alone is worth the book.
5. LP - Simplex Sensitivity.
6. Integer LP
7. Project Scheduling - Great, well written chapter, another favorite of mine.
8. Decision Analysis - Good but the problems are repetative.
9. Markov Process - An introduction only, but the application of markov process to accounts receivable anlaysis is very useful for anyone wondering about the applications of markov processes.
Overall a great book that is worth its price.

Customer Reviews:
I miss it.......2007-06-06
This was the required text for the microbiology class I took. I found this book to be very informative and helpful. The class was an introduction to microiology and this book was perfect for it! And I'm sure that, had this book been that bad, the instructor would never have selevte it for the course. My only regret is that I sold it back to the campus bookstore at the end of the semester; I wish I still had this to go back to and look up the information.

Book Description
POPULATION introduces you to population issues, concepts and theories. While keeping larger population issues in perspective, the text closely examines key factors in population processes, from fertility and mortality rates to agricultural production and urbanization. The text addresses both population problems and potential solutions, and includes intriguing essays, interesting examples, and up-to-date Internet resources.
Customer Reviews:
Yeah its a text, but its good..........2007-01-26
Weeks is a genius. He came into my population life course class and spoke about anything we wanted to know, and was happy to be there. Which is weird, coming from the academic world.
Population by Weeks Review.......2004-05-29
This is a great introduction to demographics. It provides a easy to read introduction. It is still a college textbook. The author integrates humor into the text, which certainly kept me reading. Infotrac was completely worthless. It was a password to a three-month trial of access to databases. I already have access to databases through other sources, school and the library.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money........2006-05-21
I own the 4th edition. I had to make a comment after amazon recommended the 5th.
This is a great book. Originally, i was PO'ed at the price. Especially when you get it and its quite thin compared to many texts. I had to get it for APICS.
Once you start reading it you find it cuts through all waste. This is not a padded book. It explains concepts in a brief, direct manner. Most importantly it communicates clearly. Its like a well written executive summary of the field of materials management. There is enough detail for practitioners.
I have almost all texts in the recommended reading of APICS. This is probably my favorite. The utility you will get per unit of time reading this is huge.
Basic Supply Chain.......2006-03-14
This book has an easy written language and is very good for beginners in the Supply Chain Management Area.
Best book to understand manufacturing process.......2006-02-01
This is one of the best books I have come across which explains the basics of Manufacturing.
A good textbook.......2005-11-17
This book covers the basics of material management and goes into some quantitative detail as well. It is very well written and its lucid style is perfect for a beginner to get a grasp on the subject.
The author clearly and logically explains the concepts of production planning, master production schedule, MRP, Production and activity control, purchasing, inventory management, forcasting, demand planning and much more.
The book also has an abundance of examples and exercises for the student to work through. It makes a good read as a beginner's textbook - but it is probably not very useful as a practical guide for the experienced professional.
Introduction to Materials Management (5th Edition) by J.R. Tony Arnorld (hardcover).......2005-09-04
I was surprised that I got the book was kind of old and not a hardcover as I saw online.

Book Description
Wheeler and Ganji introduce many topics that engineers need to master in order to plan, design and document a successful experiment or measurement system. The volume offers thorough discussions of topics often ignored or merely touched upon by other books, including modern computerized data acquisition systems, electrical output measuring devices, and in-depth coverage of experimental uncertainty analysis. The authors detail general characteristics of measurement systems, measurement systems with electrical signals, computerized data acquisition systems, discrete sampling and analysis of time-varying signals, statistical analysis of experimental data, experimental uncertainty analysis, measurement of solid-mechanical quantities, measurement of pressure, temperature and humidity, measurement of fluid flow rate, fluid velocity, fluid level, and combustion pollutants, dynamic behavior of measurement systems, as well as guidelines for planning and documenting experiments. For practicing engineers of all kinds.

Customer Reviews:
This book confuses more than it educates.......2007-04-20
I am shocked that there are ANY positive reviews, and am highly suspect of the five star ones.
This book needs massive amounts of editing. There are few examples of equations and concepts; of the few that are, about a third of them are incorrect in one form or another (either they refer back to the wrong data, they skip steps, simply get the math wrong...). This is infuriating. I would like to see many more logically worked out examples, if they can manage to get it straight themselves before printing. On chapter review questions, only a very few have answers in the appendix; these are simple answers, not worked out, and not surprisingly, often incorrect.
Also, this book seems to go out of it's way to explain concepts in the most complex manner possible. If it could choose between a ten word sentance an entry level engineering student or even layman could understand, or two paragraphs of engineering-ese, it'll choose the latter.
This book has potential to be very good, with development and editing. Just amazing that it's in it's eleventh printing, reads like a diassembled beta copy. AWFUL.
Pretty good for California Civil PE Surveying test.......2006-10-30
I bought this book for the Civil PE Surveying test. I would recommend its use for this test. I found several answers directly from this book, answers that weren't in the typical test prep book that most people buy.
I'd recommend buying this book and also one old, outdated text book (pre 1980's at least). The exam seems to have some questions that are more of historical note than they are relavent to modern surveying - I had a couple of answers that weren't in this version of the book but were in the 6th edition, because the topic covered has become outdated.
Way too many errata for a recommendation.......2005-06-26
I have been using this book for six months in two different courses, and have nearly completed it.
While the content is fine, the number of errata in this book should not be tolerated.
On the book's web page, numerous errata are listed, but there are many more that have not been reported or compiled. While trying to study this book, the errata keep getting in the way of understanding the material, as there are wrong equations, bad tables, etc.
This book is in its tenth printing, and it is simply inexcusable that this many errata are allowed to remain in the book after so many printings.
Another reviewer (an educator who has the edition with answers in the back) mentioned the number of incorrect answers in the educators edition as well.
So, if you have a choice, look elsewhere for an elementary surveying text. The authors and/or publishers of this one obviously do not care enough to correct the numerous errors which confuse the student.
how to survive the use of this book.......2003-10-17
this book is terrible! There are very few helpful illustrations, some simply don't exist ie in the defining of angles and their relationships! for some problems/projects that are fairly involved, several completely different data sets are used, so if you were confused about something on one step you cannot derive understanding from the completion of the problem. So, you are forced to rely on the horrible text written partially in crat -things are explained in the longest possible way! The author and our instructor use different terms, it is awful.
My tip: rely on lectures and labs and don't miss a single one, get a study budy or work with your lab partner immediately after class. AVOID USING THIS BOOK IF IT CONFUSES YOU like it does me. I came to this class with a fair understanding most of this already but the book muddles it up so bad I was forced to abandon use of it.
Elementary Surveying.......2002-01-27
Simply the best surveying text. The best feature is the way it introduces the basic concepts of a topic followed by a section of advanced concepts concerning the topic. This makes the book an essential reference for both students and practioners. This book is highly recommended.

The Human Brain Coloring Book (Cos, 306)
ASIN: 0878937544 |
Book Description
Biological Psychology is a comprehensive survey of the biological bases of behavior that is authoritative and up-to-date. Designed for undergraduates enrolled in Biological Psychology, Physiological Psychology, or Behavioral Neuroscience, the book continues to offer an outstanding illustration program that engages students, making even complicated topics and chains of events clear. The book offers a broad perspective, encompassing lucid descriptions of behavior, evolutionary history, development, proximate mechanisms, and applications. New coauthor Neil V. Watson brings his expert knowledge of the field and the course to the Fourth Edition. This edition is designed to make the book even more readable. Each chapter has been made more concise and now begins with a brief narrative relating the topic to the human condition. The new edition boasts hundreds of new references, including research students may have encountered in the popular media. Yet critical thinking skills are also honed as the reader is alerted to the many widely-held myths about the neuroscience of behavior (different parts of the tongue detect only certain flavors, dogs are color-blind, sleep deprivation makes you crazy), and educated about facts that sound so unlikely to the uninformed (some people cannot feel pain, in some animals only half the brain sleeps at a time, ears make sounds, some people cannot form new memories, experience alters the structure of the brain). Thorough and reader-friendly, Biological Psychology reveals the fascinating interactions of brain and behavior.
Key Features
* The book has an outstanding full-color art program, including hundreds of original drawings that make it easy to understand structures, mechanisms, and processes in the brain.
* Each chapter opens with a brief narrative illustrating an important aspect of behavioral biology that will be made clear to the student by reading the rest of the chapter.
* Chapters end with a summary of the main points and offer recommended reading for students who want to learn more.
* Icons alert students to important methods, clinical issues, competing hypotheses, and instances in which genes, evolution, or neural plasticity are at work.
* Every copy comes with Learning Biological Psychology, an electronic study referenced from CD icons throughout the text.
Customer Reviews:
A good tool.......2007-03-09
Book came quickly. It's good if you like to learn... otherwise it would work better to beat yourself in the face with.
Warning! This is NOT the TEXTBOOK!.......2006-08-15
You'll never guess from this page, but this volume is NOT THE TEXTBOOK if that is what you're looking for and thinking you've gotten it dead cheap.
This is the "Cram101 Textbook Outlines" 74-page textbook OUTLINE! Includes "highlights, outlines, and notes for the textbook" "never highlight a book again!"
Now go back and buy the textbook, if that's what you need -- it's over fifty bucks even used, so suck it up and click Order. But don't get the wrong, like I did, and lose the time sending it back.
Great Introductory Text.......2000-06-07
I have used both the first and second editions of this text in courses for first-year graduate students in a Psy.D. program. The text is clear, the illustrations excellent, as are the color overheads. This is at exactly the right level for students who will be clinicians using this information in understanding and dealing with clients directly (as opposed to researchers).
good end of the second millenium.......2000-05-02
I had the chance to give a overlook to prof. M.Rosenzweig text "Biological Psychology...", talking with my assistant teacher, I said, at last a nice, and good text for undergraduate student that are not going to be medicine student, but other profesional. This is the text for a change in the teaching of neuroscience; the result of it use will be clear at december 2000. the reasons for this: - clear use of history. - great use of design in each theme treated. - all the aids (cd, etc) are exactly what a beginnig student need. - the use of real neuroanatomy part, are perfectly complement by the pictures, diagram in the text. profs. M. Rosenzweig, A. leiman & S.M. Breedlove thanks from Chile.
Please try again Mr.Rozenweig.......1999-12-16
This book is a course textbook for my course, but to be honest I find it badly set out, espacially in the index where it's impossible to find anything. I know the guy's an expert in his field but the relevent information is hard to extract from the very dry tone. I've been tempted on more than one occasion to simply use it as a computer stand. This may sound like any other textbook but when you compare this to Kalat's book of the same name, the difference is unbelievable. As a student I'll take this rare opportunity to say 'good try Mr.Rozenweig, but I think you should take it back and work on it a little more'

Great book.......2007-04-29
Analysis at this level is probably the most challenging class for an undergraduate degree. However, this book made it very manageable. I found the introduction to proof very helpful. I encourage anyone who is using this book to study this chapter ahead of time. It will make the subsequent chapters a lot easier to handle. If it was not for this book and the outsdanting professor I had, I would never have passed this class. Go for it!
good to go.......2005-09-29
The book arrived in good condition and I have not had any problems with it.
Definitely a good first text.......2002-09-05
I bought this book because I have been looking for a Introductory analysis text that isn't too advanced, but yet doesn't gloss over the essential stuff, and I found it in Lay's book. For the self-studier, this book is excellent! I have several books on analysis: Shilov, Kolomogorov, Rosenlicht, Ross,etc... For the beginner, this book is superior to all of them. A plethora of examples. Also, a good range of problems:from straight forward problems requiring only the use of a definition to more advanced problems requiring a little thought. If you already have had some Analysis, then this book is probably not for you. But, if you are a student who wants to learn Analysis on your own, then this book would be hard to beat. After this book, one should be able to tackle "Papa Rudin". For according to Rudin, all that is needed to study his "Real and Complex Analysis" tome, is the first seven chapters of his "Principles of Mathematical Analysis". This book covers all that Rudin covers with the exception of Riemann-Stieltjes integration. On the whole, this is a great start! If proof-based math is new to you, then you will appreciate the first chapter on proofs. Would have given five stars, but I would have liked to seen Riemann-Stieltjes integration. That's really only nit picking, though.
This book was surprisingly good.......2002-07-03
I didn't think this book was going to be very good, but the author has "proved" me wrong ;-) This book starts out so basic that in my class (which was the first analysis course in our math department) we actually skipped the first 1/3 or so of the book. The first 9 or 10 sections consist of stuff like basic set theory, logic, definition of a function, etc. I would think that even the most elementary Analysis books would completely leave this out and expect that the reader is already familiar with this. So if you need it, this book will be a good resource for you.
Then the book goes into a very nice introduction to topology. Basic concepts like open/closed sets, accumulation points, compact sets, etc. Topology can be a little intimidating simply because it's _so_ abstract, but this book makes the basic concepts very easy to understand, and prepares one for a more advanced course in topology. Alot of (good) Elementary Analysis books leave topology out, but I'm glad this book contained it. It is a very interesting subject.
All the material in the book is explained probably about as easily as the concepts CAN be explained. If you still have trouble with it, you might consider a different major. Not to say that this book transforms a very difficult subject into a pathetically easy piece of cake because that's impossible, but the material is presented probably as easily as it can be in order to maintain precision and detail (which is the whole point of Analysis).
The book is definitely not running short in the examples or end-of-section problems department, so that is another plus. The problems at the end of each section range in difficulty from problems that almost exactly match an example worked in detail in the section, to fairly challenging problems. With enough time though the average student could probably do every problem at the end of every section.
I'd recommend this book for self study as well as a supplement to any introductory analysis course. If you have already have exposure to rigorous proof of calculus theorems, then this book will probably be too basic for you.
The reason this book got 4 stars instead of 5 is because of its utterly ridiculous price. Just as good is Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus, ISBN: 038790459X, except that it doesn't include the section on Topology ...

A very expensive book considering the length and content.......2007-07-09
This book is adequate for the purpose it was written but my biggest criticism is the price which is it sold for. I feel that I have read many similar books with three or four times the content and is the price at which Intro to Health Services was sold.
not the best intro to health services.......2006-12-06
This book is not very well suited to those who want an introduction to health policy and services. If you have some background in the field, it will probably be too basic to help you very much. I had no such background when I began using this book in a graduate course in health policy, and while most of the text is understandable, it is generally not very interesting and/or helpful. I suppose it's a good thing that the book and chapters are brief, however it leaves out a lot of details that I felt would be beneficial towards understanding a very complex system. When statistics are used to exemplify a point, they are generally pretty dated. Even if a new edition were available though, I'd read through a chapter or two in the library before investing in this book.
Good introduction to HS for non medical types.......2005-09-29
Using this text for a distance learning course. Seems to provide a good introduction to the subjects of Health Services. Written on a level I can understand, not being a medical person, but a hospital support person.
Oddly parochial title ..........2004-10-10
If this book is only about the US health service, why doesn't the title say so? There are quite a few other countries out there in the world, and almost all of them have health services!
Excellent introductory overview to the US health system........1999-08-18
Williams and Torrens have developed one of the best introductory texts on the US health system. The book has clear learning objectives, useful references, and helpful diagrams. The American health system is farily and accurately described, warts and all.
