1 out of 5 stars Only Dummies buy Goldmine.......2006-08-08

Used the product for years, and had nothing but database corruption and Goldsync synchronization problems. I like and use salesforce dot com. Goldmine is a company that has milked the database and not kept up with the times. Act! is also a stronger product. Goldmine's days are numbered, the database is still contact centric rather than account centric which makes it difficult to use in a business to business selling environment.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2005-08-12

The steps are easy to follow and now using more features on GoldMine. Has help simplify my records.

3 out of 5 stars When they say dummies, they mean dummies.......2005-08-06

I was thinking this was going to be better than the manual or the help files. I thought wrong. I was hoping to get some insight to the technical side of GM. This is not that. Typically good dummies book - my low-ish rating is more my frustration in finding a technical GM reference.

5 out of 5 stars Straight talk for regular folks........2005-08-06

Terrific, common-sense writing. As the Midwest's oldest public GoldMine training center, Publish or Perish, Inc. wouldn't be without it as a supplement for our professional training. If you want understandable how-to that's technically correct, and you're not a propeller-head, you really need this book!

4 out of 5 stars Never a Dumb Buy "for Dummies" .......2005-07-22

I've been a fan of the "for Dummies" books for some time now. Although my exposure has only covered about a dozen titles, none of them disappoint.

GoldMine 6 is no exception. Perhaps some might think it dumb, I chose to purchase GoldMine 6 despite possessing GoldMine 5 by the same author...feeling confident that the information in "what's new in this release" would more than pay for the inevitable redundancy. It has, indeed.

Scott explains the use of GoldMine 6 in simple (not condescending) language, with a touch of humor and includes the all-important "bombs" alerting readers of potential loss of data or other pitfalls. He incorporates plenty of tips, sidebars and screenshots throughout the book. On occasion, I wish he would have gone into greater detail, but usually you can find enough direction in the software's online help to supplement the book's explanation.

An excellent buy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text For PL/SQL Beginners.......2007-06-26

Fantastic text for beginners in PL/SQL. Clearly laid out concepts and samples, and hints at naming conventions and other standards to be used. A very solid introduction to the language.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Learning PL/SQL.......2007-03-09

I am very pleased w/ the purchase of the book. If your goal is to learn PL/SQL quickly and comprehensively, this is the book to buy. It covers all the fundamentals you need to know about PL/SQL and it is excellently written. I have been a developer for 20 years in many languages. Learning new languages from overly technical books and writters, I find, often times make your learning process slow and ineffective. I took this class at Oracle, but there were topics that the training manual and the instructor did not do a good job presenting. This book clarified many of the topics I that were presented in class in a simpler, clearer, and more effective manner. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference, not for beginners.......2006-11-10

This book has a lot of good technical data, but it's not well organized for learning, more of a reference. Also, it assumes you are already an experienced SQL programmer.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Book.......2006-07-27

This book is an excellent introduction to both PL/SQL and general coding principles. It is a good book for beginners and old dogs alike. It provides simple, clear and useful introductions to advanced topics such a INSTEAD OF TRIGGERS, BULK COLLECTS etc. My team is now using it a our "best practice" document for PL/SQL coding. Well done Misha and Paul.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent text on PL/SQL.......2006-07-26

As I began reading, the attribute which came foremost to my mind was "readable". It covers all of the basics in a fashion readily comprehensible to those with even modest exposure to programming. We can always do better, but for most of us, if we go only as far as this text takes us, we will do far better than many of our contemporaries in the industry today.

It certainly is also "A Reference for the Rest of Us". Those of us who have used PL/SQL for many years may not have noticed various handy new features as they have come along, and for those features we know of but use less frequently, this book is a handy reference.

Interspersed with the fundamentals of the language and all of the tips and examples, the authors continually (and gently) remind us that we have to keep checking the bigger picture - in short how to avoid project failure. Good advice in any language.

2 out of 5 stars Little in the way of examples.......2004-12-13

OK - I'm totally new to web design, and that is why I thought a 'Dummies' book would be an appropriate start (I am a seasoned programmer, though, so I didn't expect this to be especially difficult). I do have a very basic website up and running.

I haven't gotten anywhere near all the way through the book, and already I've ordered a couple others, because it seems like I'm not getting a lot out of this. Maybe if a person already had some experience with earlier Dreamweaver products it might go easier.

My biggest problem so far is that it seems to me more of an item by item description of the myriad features - with little detail with regard to what they're for and how to use them. An early question for me was why and when to use tables versus frames versus layers for page design, and so far I have not found such info in this book. I've had to look elsewhere.

I learn best by following a detailed sample project from start to finish. There is as of yet no sample to work with here. There are lots of screen shots, but they rarely seem to add much knowledge, and I often spend a lot of time trying to figure out how that screen was even achieved, and what the authors are trying to tell me.

I've just started the ColdFusion section of the Dreamweaver sub-book, and I understand the very basics of what ColdFusion is. But the text is not leading me through an explanation. The screen shots are just comparing previous versions to the MX version, and the text is talking about things like "When you have a ColdFusion page open", but not how to open a ColdFusion page.

I see the book has gotten some good reviews, and the bad reviews seem to be written by experienced web developers who think the book is too shallow. Perhaps my brain just works differently, but I wanted something that would walk me through a project, showing me things on the way. Not just a overview of the features, without an entry-level discussion of what they're for and how to use them.

As I said, I do much better with a walk-through of a project when I'm a newbie. Examples, not just expanded descriptions of individual features. I don't expect discussion of the more advanced features, that would require more focused texts. What I did want was to be hand-held through the basics of creating a website.

I would not recommend this book, and I doubt I'll finish it. I'll probably just go back to the help files that came with Studio, and hope that my next book actually has sample projects to follow.

1 out of 5 stars Is there a worse book on MX?.......2004-09-08

I've bought dozens of books over the years for all Macromedia and Adobe products and this one is probably the worst. It's like a dictionary that doesn't have the word you're looking up but - sure enough - the word "chair" is in there.

I have yet to find anything I need in this waste of shelf space. It does, however, tell you that File > New creates a new document.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Book; A Little Too Much for Dummies.......2004-05-28

Macromedia Studio MX All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is definately a value-packed, thick, useful book. There is good reference material and getting-started info on Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Macromedia Vlash MX, & Cold Fusion MX along with two sections on design basics and integration of studio components.

As I said, with such a breadth of information the book is definately a bargain. However, that advantage is also the book's primary downfall I feel. It says 7 books in one, but if that is true it is SEVEN SHORT BOOKS. Each book is definately not the standard "For Dummies" length. This lends itself to make it 7 abridged-sized books. The adbridgement comes by removing all of the discussion on the more advanced features of the program. Unfortunately the extreme basics are also belabored.

All of that means that the book will be useful to help you get started in Macromedia Studio, but after you have a little more than a few hours of experience in the software suite you will find the book increasingly useless. Because the features which a mildly seasoned user will find difficult to master are not covered, this book is not such a great value if the purchaser already has mild to moderate background experience with MX software.

So with that review in mind take it or leave according to your lot. If you are new to Macromedia Studio MX and want some help for the first month or so getting up and running, this is a great resource. But if you have already pushed through the growing pains of climbing the learning curve, you may want to pass on this one for a more advanced text.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Beginners.......2004-04-07

Great for those new to Macromedia Studio. This book will teach you all the basics to get up and running in minimal time. After this book you will be ready to explore any portion of Studio MX in greater depth as you will have a good grounding in the basics. Well worth the price of admission.

4 out of 5 stars Getting started...and beyond?.......2003-08-03

Yip, worth the pennies you're going to spend on it. It has a no-nonsense approach and gets you up and running in no time at all. It doesn't include the typical html-this-and-html-that intro chapters (that are included in virtually all the other web development-related books) and jumps away with the cardinals immediately.

It is obviously not a topical alpha-to-omega subject matter type of book - for this buy separate titles specialising in the Macromedia component you're interested in.

But if you are a hit-the-ground-running type of being, this will show you how all the Macromedia components integrate with each other and beyond. The book is definitely worth the odd 8550 square millimeters (footprint that is!) on your bookshelf. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars The errors make this "how to" book somewhat useless.......2007-02-07

I have to repeat what others have said. This being a programming book, it is inexcusable to have _ when the programming language wants a "

Terrible experience trying to learn a programming language when several symbols are just plain wrong in the text. What's the point? I'm paying money to waste my time figuring out typos in a programming language I do not know.

So why did I give my money? Never again. The publisher should be recalling this book but they haven't done so.

Other then this tremendously horrid mistake which is throughout the book there is some good information. There is also a lot of senseless rambling. The author goes on and on about PHP numerical functions. All she had to say was you can perform calculations and a few examples. Her rambling text is painfully dry. Maybe she should have spent more time proofreading rather then the obvious page filling.

I'm angry that I had to translate code I'm trying to learn. Maybe the author and publisher should be paying me to teach them. Refund please.

2 out of 5 stars There are better choices out there.......2007-01-29

I only give this two stars because there are a few snippets of code that are worth absorbing. However this book has enough errors to make the subject matter confusing. I've used quite a few "Dummies" books as intros to a variety of subjects in my 20 years of programming. They have for the most part been quite helpful.

I always expect some errors from books dealing with technical material, but the errors here are of a nature so as to cause confusion, especially to those new to PHP.

My bottom line recommendation is not to use this book if you are new to programming or to PHP. You'll spend more time than warranted separating the wheat from the chaff. There are much better intros to be had. Try Sam's "PHP, MySQL and Apache" or Sitepoint's "Object Oriented PHP Solutions". Both are accurate, easy to understand, and have code samples that are easy to get to.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, the author reads the reviews........2005-08-15

Yes, the author reads the reviews here. That's me. The error in which a few quotes were replaced with underscores occurred during the publishing process, after I was finished with the book. I didn't know about the errors until I saw the earlier review here. However, there is no way to fix it. If the book is reprinted or a second edition is released, I can fix the errors, but not until then. I wish I could. I apologize to any who were confused by this problem.

There are 8 quotes replaced with underscores on 4 lines in Chapter 3, 2 quotes replaced with underscores on 1 line in Chapter 4, and 20 quotes replaced with underscores on 8 lines in Chapter 5. I have a list of the errors and corrections on my web site at janet.valade.com/php5errors.html.

3 out of 5 stars Editor must have been on vacation!!!.......2005-08-14

Although I am learning a lot from this book, I am frustrated by the number of typo's. I finally figured out that when you see an underscore, it might really be a single or double quote...
Now, I need to go back and make sure if an underscore ever really means underscore...
Does the author of these books ever read these reviews???

5 out of 5 stars Unquestionably the best book to start with........2005-07-05

The samples are very well described, easy to understand (it IS for dummies) and they are about the most common use of PHP. There is a web site with the source code of every sample.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 has become standard equipment in lots of organizations, largely owing to its relatively friendly user interface on top of its solid infrastructure. That user interface, however, can intimidate users who are new to the environment and lack the experience to interpret what they see. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for Dummies decodes this top-of-the-line relational database management system (RDBMS) for the benefit of such novices, as well as for people coming to SQL Server 2000 from one of its competitors. Anthony Mann does a fine job of explaining not only administrative matters, but also issues of database design, Structured Query Language (SQL), and integration of SQL Server databases into larger information systems.

The instructional style in this book varies depending on the subject at hand. When explaining subjects that are mostly conceptual in nature, such as relational database structure, Mann relies mainly on text and bulleted lists (and perhaps not enough on diagrams, which can really clarify these topics). When covering areas that have more to do with the specifics of SQL Server 2000--running Data Transformation Services (DTS) imports and exports, for instance--he employs steps (with options and alternate paths explained) and screen shots of the user interface. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to set up and maintain databases under SQL Server 2000, with some instruction in relational database design and Structured Query Language (SQL) thrown in. Databases, tables, keys, foreign keys, basic Transact-SQL, stored procedures, triggers, and administrative subjects like backup, restoration, and distributed databases are all covered.

Book Description

Network administrators challenged with the task of building and deploying a network database can look to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 For Dummies for simple answers about a complex tool. Microsoft bills its SQL server as the best and fastest network database for NT-based networks and the Internet. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 For Dummies explores the processes and tasks involved with installing, configuring, and using the latest release of Microsoft SQL Server. This book explores designing SQL databases, scaling your server to handle the tasks you need, creating a database system to handle your business, and SQL's tight integration with other Microsoft networking and Internet management products including BackOffice and the rest of the Windows DNA 2000 suite. This book includes a CD that contains such software as IE 5.5, Vision Builder, Vision JADE and sp_Assist.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Muzzled author produces mediocre book.......2004-03-08

The only perceived value of this book could be the enclosed CD, a 120 day Evaluation version of the SQL 2K Server, Enterprise Edition, a couple thousand retail, which will need a updater to SP3a on the MS support website. This will bring the app to the latest version, since "Yukon" is currently in beta, will not be released until Late 04. You probably can get an Eval CD directly from MS for small shipping, or free at a trade show, such as Comdex, at a local MS Sales office, or SQL Server Users Group (UG). No additional files are on the CD. You can install this on Server 2K, Server 2K3, Server NT4SP6, and Win98SE; but the installation chapter is a download from the publisher's website to save book space!

The heart of the book, Part II DataBase (DB) Design, has 4 chapters over 112 pages for describing relational DB, creating a Customer DB, indexing, triggers, programming, and procedures. He devotes 2+ pages to Locking. Then in Part III Interface Design, he has 3 chapters covering 80 pages for describing SQL, Query, and Import/Export. Slim pickings for a budding DBA, many tables; maybe one can use this book as an abridged reference.

Then there's more, Part IV Enterprise Issues, Chap 11 goes over making a DB backup / restore that I agree needs to be covered. And Chap 12 covering web serving your DB is OK, but I'd hold the line on Chap 13 where he covers Distributed Queries over multiple servers, to exploit the Enterprise version capability. Like most budding DBAs are going to have multiple, remote, networked DB servers at his disposal? Nonetheless, this chapter seems to be the author's pride and joy. I'd highly recommend the author use these 12 precious pages to beef up what he has already covered.

But most superfilous is his Appendix A, where he expends over 18 precious pages for Wizard flowcharts. What a waste! The Security chapter is a download from the publisher's website. The author is at tmann at vbasic dot com .

His book's most significant failing is not showing how to display or print out a result or report of a DB query. Perhaps the author hasn't found out that reports are the life-blood of business. He gives a half page mention of the Crystal Report Writer in the last chapter (p338), but neither integrates reports in his book, nor indicates that an older v4.5 (96) version is bundled with the SQL Server 2K. SQL Server Help for reports is useless as Crystal has its own separate Help. As demoed in our local UG, MS has just released its own Reporting Services module (free download) to supplant the highly regarded Crystal Reports.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but could be better.......2003-07-31

This is a good book if you are a "rank beginner" and you don't need to do anything complex with SQL. It's missing a lot of information that could be considered more advanced.

I bought it to help me with my SQL queries in Active Server Pages and I just haven't found it to be that useful. One of my employees, who knows nothing about SQL has found it to be very useful, however.

2 out of 5 stars At least it includes an eval copy of SQL Server..........2003-07-27

Let's just say this is not a very good dummies book. There are very very few "real world" examples of the topics presented. The technical accuracy is pretty decent, but this book will not enlighten any beginners to the world of SQL Server. Advanced topics are rarely explained in layman terms and the depth of coverage is, shall we say, not very deep at all! Stick to the SQL Server Online Books (which this book just seems to re-hash, albeit in much less detail) and you'll learn alot more about SQL Server.

3 out of 5 stars Not much smarter now.......2001-06-28

Although the book covers the major features it offers little over the online help. What is missing is the overall context or a complete example that might help understanding of how to put everything together into a working application. When it presents triggers and stored procedures the examples are so basic as to not explore the potential power. The chapter on relational database design was particularly lacking in ideas or references. Some of the more powerful features such as metadata and analysis services are barely mentioned. The book did introduce the major administrative functions well. If you do buy the book, do go the authors web site described in the book, to get the "bonus" chapters on installation and security, which should also help a new administrator.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough information.......2004-11-11

You would be better off buying a book about a specific Macromedia application rather than trying to save money with this "all-in-one". There is simply not enough information in order to explain the concepts well enough. This book explains something once and then goes on to the next topic. I would compare it more to the Help section than a tutorial.

Instead, I would recommend the SAMS Teach yourself Flash in 24 hours - it is more comprehensive and easier to follow. If you think you are getting a steal with all 7 books for the price of one, don't buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful; Maybe a Bit Too Much for Dummies.......2004-05-28

5 out of 5 stars 7 books in 1.......2003-12-14

I just bought Macromedia Studio MX 2004. Yet, all I got was a CD and a good luck. Well I could root around trying to use the product, get a book with insight on how to handle the product efficiently. There are many good books on each item in the Studio. If you buy them individually the price is almost seven times the price of this book. Then you have to compare and contrast to integrate the information.

This book brings all the advantages of the other Dummies books. There are clear examples and pictures on what the screen should look like. The added plus is that this book shows how to integrate all the individual products in the studio. There s a good introduction, contents, index and tabbed pages so you can see where one sections stops and the next begins.

There is no CD. However the advantage is that there no trial programs to interfere with the real product. I have tried a few of the items and I am pleased with the results.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good foundation, but getting rapidly obsolete.......2004-09-20

I enjoyed reading this book and found it an excellent foundation to issues in data warehousing. However, note that this book was published in 1997, so it does not include anything that was developed after that date. (To be fair, it accurately predicts some trends.) I wish the author would update the book to 2004!

3 out of 5 stars Good Only for Beginners.......2002-12-22

This book is good for total beginners, to get familiar with the Data-Warehousing Lingo's. Though the author does tend to give some wague out of the blue examples, it is an interesting read. Buy it only if you have no clue what a database or data warehousing is.

3 out of 5 stars OK for total beginners and laypeople.......2002-03-28

This book is good for the person completely new to data warehousing, as long as they DON'T take it as the complete or last word on the subject. Most of the basic concepts are presented well, but there are various errors in some of the specifics, and there are some theories described that are 'old school' and not necessarily relevant with todays technology (in the last 5 years data warehousing has changed in the capability of tools and in approaches & architecture).

RECOMMENDATIONS: If you are a business person trying to understand what your computer people are talking about re data warehouses, data marts or business intelligence, this is a good starting point.
But, if you are an IT/IS/computer person, skip this book and read Ralph Kimball's "Data Warehouse Toolkit", then graduate to his "Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit" (covers many more aspects), and Bill Inmon's "Corp Information Factory". These 3 books, and a DBMS specific book (e.g. "Oracle 8i Data Warehousing") will be all you need for your first few projects.

5 out of 5 stars A great DW book for beginners.......2000-10-30

Look, this look isn't for experienced DW people. However, it wouldn't hurt some of the DW "experts" I know to read it.

The author gived down to earth comments and examples of what the industry entails and what DW is all about. He covers most of the issues and gave me some interesting insight into some areas that I haven't yet delt with.

I've been working in DW for over 5 years. Even so, I think this book is worth reading. I'm gald I did.

2 out of 5 stars A couple nice points but it cutesiness becomes boring.......1999-09-10

The writer attempts to write in a cutesy tone - probably in the name of being entertaining - but because he tries too hard the writing just becomes boring.

This book reads like a series of columns about data warehousing. Most of the discussions are okay but somewhat on the superficial side. The author is at his best when he discusses the people side of data warehousing - especially the political issues.

If you do not want to get deeply involved in the technical aspects of the subject, W.H. Inmon and Vidette Poe provide more easily read and more penetrating introductions to data warehousing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Customizing Access.......2007-04-03

Some years ago Microsoft created a specialized programming language to allow extensions to be made to the normal modes of operation allowed in their Office suite. The language was fairly well thought out to be applicable to applications as different as word processing, spreadsheets or data bases. They called it Visual Basic for Applications shortened to VBA. It has worked remarkable well. Down theough the years there have been relatively few changes to VBA.

This book is on VBA as specifically oriented to the Microsoft Access database program. But if you learn Access VBA, you are not far from knowing how to use VBA on any of the other Office components.

While this is an Access book, it is specifically on VBA, it assumes that you already know about how to build a table, and about rows and columns. It also assumes that you have some familiarty with other Access features such as building queries.

Access goes to a great deal of effort to avoid having to use the underlying SQL language. There are a couple of chapters on SQL for the total beginner. In the long run, you will probably want to know more.

You can't design one book to do everything in about 400 pages. This "dummies" book concentrates on VBA. That's enough for one book. It does a good job on VBA. You may want to fill out your bookshelf with Access for Dummies and SQL for Dummies.

5 out of 5 stars Database Development For Dummies Review.......2002-04-07

This book has a wealth of information. The author does a great job at passing his knowledge on to the reader. You'll learn even more than you expected.

1 out of 5 stars Use "Database Design for Mere Mortals" Instead.......2001-05-05

This is the first of the "dummies" books that I've used, and probably the last. The author introduces a lot of jargon and complicated models early on and then proceeds to use terms interchangably, leave models abstract that would have benefited from metaphors, and produces examples that he fails to adequately explain. When things become complicated, he demures, reminding the reader that this is, after all, only an introduction.

Perhaps I would have put my inability to use this book up to my own inadequacy when it comes to things technical, but after reading Michael Hernandez's Database Design for Mere Mortals I realized that the dummies' book was needlessly technical and theoretical.

This is the rare case of a book that can take you from a beginner to an advanced-intermediate level. Like many of the books in IDG's Dummies series, this volume begins with a definition ("What is SQL?") and ends with "The Part of Tens," a collection of tips in a top ten list form. Taylor writes in a breezy, entertaining style that SQL novices will find inviting. One caveat: The examples are given in Borland's Delphi, a rapid application development (RAD) tool. Some sections show several screen shots from Delphi and it may be difficult to follow along in these sections if you don't have the program in front of you. As with other Dummies books, SQL for Dummies is entertaining to read although the nonstop jokes may distract some readers from the technical content.

If you know absolutely nothing about SQL, this book is for you!

4 out of 5 stars A proper start in SQL, nothing more .......2006-03-23

About a year ago, I was writing up a series of lessons for a course in Java DataBase Connectivity (JDBC) that I was preparing for a local business. As is always the case, they needed the course right away, so I had little time to prepare the lessons. To illustrate what can be done using JDBC, I used the executeQuery() method of the Statement object. The executeQuery() method accepts an SQL command as input, so it was necessary for me to quickly brush up on SQL commands. This is the book I reached for to get myself back to speed on SQL commands. Like all ""For Dummies" books, it can be used to quickly learn the basics of the topic, although it has little use beyond the beginning. I found it adequate for my needs at the time, although when I needed to delve deeper into SQL for a later course, I went elsewhere.
All of the basics are covered at the level one expects from the series, and at the level of the beginner. Of course, some people will struggle with the book, as there is no precise definition of "beginner", or "dummy" for that matter. Nevertheless, if you need to learn the fundamentals of SQL in a hurry, then this book is the one for you. It is simple, direct and just thorough enough to put you on the right track.

    1 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible.......2005-11-22

I have read several books in the Dummies series and found them all excellent, so when it was time to learn SQL for a programming project I got this one immediately.

Unfortunately, SQL for Dummies, turned out to be that absolute worst technical book I have ever laid eyes on.

It jumps from topic to topic without ever really explaining anything. It uses examples that are unecessarily complex -- I get the feeling his examples just come from years of working with databases, rather than a desire to illustrate any particular thing -- and the examples are never explained. Over and over, there will be a snippet of SQL code used as an example, and I will wonder, "what does this or that part of the statement do?" But he never explains anything. He just throws it out there and then moves on.

Dummies books always have a conversational tone, but the tone in this book is overly hokey and just reads like meaningless filler; all the more frustrating because there isn't really any content that it's filling in between.

All I wanted was the basics of database design and interaction, an enumeration of the commands used for creating and interacting with databases and why some actions are useful and for what, and examples throughout of how one would do typical things. Instead I got an intolerable and incoherent ramble.
