    Book Description

Interoperability: the ability of a system or a product to work with other systems or products without special effort from the user is a key issue in manufacturing and industrial enterprise generally. It is fundamental to the production of goods and services quickly and at low cost at the same time as maintaining levels of quality and customisation. Interoperability is achieved if internal and external collaborators can interact on at least three levels: data, applications and business enterprise (through the architecture of an enterprise model and making allowance for the semantics of both partners). Not only a problem of software and IT technologies, it implies support for communication and transactions between different organisations that must be based on shared business references. Today, a new and important consideration must be taken into account – economic business evaluation and the definition of dissemination policy.

Composed of over 90 papers, Enterprise Interoperability II ranges from academic research through case studies to industrial and administrative experience of interoperability. The international nature of the authorship continues to broaden. Many of the papers have examples and illustrations calculated to deepen understanding and generate new ideas.

The I-ESA’07 conference from which this book is drawn was sponsored by the European Union via the INTEROP network of excellence and the ATHENA integrated project (in the frame of the 6th IST Framework Research Program). It is also supported by the International Federation for Information Processing, the International Federation of Automatic Control and various national associations.

A concise reference to the state of the art in software interoperability, Enterprise Interoperability II will be of great value to engineers and computer scientists working in manufacturing and other process industries and to software engineers and electronic and manufacturing engineers working in the academic environment.

the only attractive aspect of this book is its website where you can submit your solutions in order to check them. However their website keeps giving errors. I spent enormous amount of time to be able to only register one of the sites given in the book and I could not register. Hello! What do you want me to do with this book now?

The book is about programming and its website is giving errors. Now, are these authors credible enough? Plus, book is full of typos.

    1 out of 5 stars Not useful.......2007-01-05

If you are looking for a book that will :

    (1) Teach you how to solve typical problems appearing in the programming contests
    (2) Give you tips to write correct code, quickly
    (3) Teach you novel algorithms

    Look Elsewhere.

This book is a mere compilation of questions appearing at different programming contests.

    4 out of 5 stars nice collection.......2006-08-18

Very nice collection of programming challenges and very well presented.
Lots of effort has been done to set up the automated program "judge" (basically an automatic test case generator and regression suite) -- i appreciated.

A little bit confusing is that there are 2 different web sites and different interfaces to this.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended to practical people.......2006-02-10

I must say that I bought this book together with "The Algorithm Design Manual" and I'm very satisfied. The problems presented here are challenging for a large category of people interested in algorithm designs and are really well selected from thousands of possible problems.

I'm also happy with the sites where you can submit your's solutions to check whether they are correct or not :-)).

Take it & enjoy the discovery beauty.

    4 out of 5 stars Mostly Helpfull.......2005-09-10

This book provides programming challenges from UVa in a topical manner which is a nice way to study certain topics, it provides some helpfull hints on the challenges. The only shortcommings come in the preparation to the programming challenges, I felt they were rushed and not very complete, true you could easily write a couple thousand pages on the topics covered, but I thought there should at least be a complete algorithm breakdowns to the problems presented, I'm not talking about code, but at least some approaches. Example, in chapter 2 there is a 5 page (plus or minus) introduction to containers (mainly stacks) and then several challenging problems that didn't neccesarily require the review the book just presented. For the most part this is a very helpfull book when I was preparing for the ICPC, but could have been a little better.

    Book Description

Conventional wisdom of the "software stack" approach to building applications may no longer be relevant. Enterprises are pursuing new ways of organizing systems and processes to become service oriented and event-driven. Leveraging existing infrastructural investments is a critical aspect to the success of companies both large and small. Enterprises have to adapt their systems to support frequent technological changes, mergers and acquisitions. Furthermore, in a growing global market, these systems are being called upon to be used by external business partners. Technology is often difficult, costly and complex and without modern approaches can prevent the enterprise from becoming agile.

Enterprise Service Oriented Architectures helps readers solve this challenge in making different applications communicate in a loosely coupled manner. This classic handbook leverages the experiences of thought leaders functioning in multiple industry verticals and provides a wealth of knowledge for creating the agile enterprise.

In this book, you will learn:

    • How to balance the delivery of immediate business value while creating long-term strategic capability

    • Fundamental principles of a service-oriented architecture (find, bind and execute)

    • The four aspects of SOA (Production, Consumption, Management and Provisioning)

    • How to recognize critical success factors to implementing enterprise SOAs

    • Architectural importance of service registries, interfaces and contracts

    • Why improper service decomposition can hurt you later rather than sooner

    • How application design and integration practices change as architects seek to implement the "agile" enterprise

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-28

There were a few decent pieces of information, but overall I was not very impressed. Some of the content was OK, but the grammatical errors and different writing styles made it a very disappointing read. There were four different authors which contributed to the flow problems, and it was obvious that some of the chapters were more poorly written than others. In addition, it didn't seem like anyone even proofed the book. I can understand a few errors, but I found myself re-reading sentence after sentence trying to understand what words were missing, misspelled or out-of-place.

The chapter on transactions was pretty decent. I liked the information on compensating transactions, which I had heard called three phase commit previously. The chapter on UDDI was pretty decent as well. I was disappointed in the last chapter on Event-Driven Architecture. It just seemed to be a hodge-podge catch all of the author's thoughts without much meat.

4 out of 5 stars use BPEL for workflow.......2006-09-25

This topical book takes us through the many facets of SOA. It can help you understand and implement an SOA redesign of your company's software assets. One of the promises of SOA is that the redesign can start at a higher level. Not at the software or the design of the software per se, but at modelling the workflow and business process management. The book bundles these under the label of "Orchestration" and explains how the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) offers the expressive power to document them. Actually, BPEL can do more than document. There is a prospect here that BPEL can be used to implement how the workflow proceeds, at the level of Web Services. Of course, the latter still have to be written. The reader needs to appreciate that the bulk of the work resides outside the book's scope, in the coding of those Web Services.

The book shows the considerable potential of SOA.

5 out of 5 stars Great contribution to SOA thinking.......2006-07-26

Although I am not a friend of any of the authors, I find this book great. The first chapter is not only an excellent introduction to SOA; it also addressed the change of mindset you have to implement to succeed. The requirement discussion is chapter two is also excellent. It challenges the use-case driven development from RUP (and other story-based development methods) and shows how a successful SOA implementation within IT and business makes it possible to make a simple and direct mapping from business requirements to services. I also find the emphasis on information services important! The proposed method for requirement management will definitely change the mindset for both programmers and business people - and increase business agility within the enterprise.

The rest of the book covers the fundamentals of SOA in a very compact format. Spending time on this book seems to be a good investment.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book with Real Material.......2006-05-07

James is my best friend and have worked with him in the past and current. This book on SOA is a highly recommended book for companies trying to get into the SOA space. Concepts cleanly explained with implementation details. Great book if it were to be used in academic realm or to be used by people in the industry.

    Book Description

Software testers require people-oriented skills to survive what can often be a lose-lose relationship with developers and managers. Surviving the Top Ten Challenges of Software Testing goes beyond the technical skillsets required for effective testing to address the political realities that can't be solved by technical knowledge alone.

Authors Perry and Rice compile a "top ten" list of the challenges faced by testers and offer tactics for success. The challenges illustrate the way testing fits into the context of software development and how testers can manage expectations and improve communication with managers, developers, and customers. The text features a self-assessment for testing skills and an action plan for improving the testing process.

Topics include training, acquiring management support, obtaining tools, communicating with customers, managing changing requirements, marketing the importance of testing, testing what's thrown over the wall, controlling the scope of testing, teaching developers to test, and handling the delicate situation of reporting defects.

The Top Ten People Challenges Facing Testers

Challenge #10: Getting Trained in Testing
Challenge #9: Building Relationships with Developers
    Challenge #8: Testing Without Tools
Challenge #7: Explaining Testing to Managers
Challenge #6: Communicating with Customers -- And Users

5 out of 5 stars Software testing as if people mattered.......2004-07-31

Much has changed in software development and testing practices since this text was written in the late 90's. However, many of the identified challenges are still with us. I find myself rereading this book as it is a useful reference for a test manager. The authors identify dual disparate roles for the software tester. In role one, the focus is on the task of testing software, such as test planning, test design, and execution. In role two, the tester or test manager's role is more as a politician and marketer to protect the test staff and promote the value they bring to each project . The text focuses on the second role, which elaborates on what the authors identify as the top ten people oriented challenges for the software test professional.

The first section of the book includes an assessment to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses in meeting people related testing challenges. The bulk of the text contains individual chapters on the top 10 challenges. The challenges are explained along with guidelines to overcome the challenge. Chapters can be read out of order and this format allows you to focus on your weaknesses as identified in the self assessment. The last section of the book describes a six step change process to implement improvements. My favorite two chapters were "Explaining Testing to Managers" and "Getting Trained in Testing." Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Still valid, still useful.......2004-07-04

When this book was written software testing was starting to consolidate into an 'honorable' profession, and the number of good books about testing could be counted on your fingers (and probably a few toes). The discipline has matured into a profession, and there are so many excellent books on the subject now that it boggles my mind.

You'd think that the top ten challenges listed in this book would have been long ago resolved and replaced with a new set. Sadly, that isn't the case. Each challenge listed is as valid today as it was when this book was written, and except for #10 on the list (getting trained in testing), which has dramatically improved, the other nine are still there. Read the book. Take the advice of the two authors, both of whom are seasoned professionals who give the solutions to these challenges, and move the profession forward.

Here are the top five challenges that I see today, drawn from the list in the book:

#1 today, #6 in the book: Communicating with Customers -- And Users
#2 today, #3 in the book: Hitting a Moving Target
#3 today, #1 in the book: Having to Say No
#4 today, #4 in the book: Testing What's Thrown Over the Wall
#5 today, #2 in the book: Fighting a Lose-Lose Situation

Your order may be different, but I am willing to bet that the list will be the same. This book does give realistic solutions to these problems, so if you agree with the list, then you'll find this book valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent review of the daily pitfalls of software testing.......2000-06-20

This is an excellent review of the biggest recurring problems of the software testing world. As I read the descriptions of each of the 10 challenges, I was astonished at how many of the pitfalls I fall into on a regular basis. Perry & Rice don't just lay out what the challenges are - they also discuss how to meet each one. Each item on the list has its own chapter with sections on the impact on testing, solutions to the challenge, impediments to implementing the solutions, and helpful guidelines to creating a plan of action. This is without a doubt an excellent book for those of us in the trenches of software testing each day. (One bit of advice, though - if you're looking for a book on "how to do software testing", look elsewhere. Perry and Rice have other good books on the subject, but this one is really intended to help you step back from your daily testing work and see where you could improve on your approach to it.)

4 out of 5 stars Bringing testing out of the closet.......2000-01-03

Testing has often been the misbegotten portion of the software development process. Frequently neglected until the semi-chaotic end of the production cycle, the testing phase has traditionally been shortened to accommodate a fixed release date. The relationships between the developer and test groups are to some extent adversarial, but in so many cases it often breaks down into open hostility. Among developers, it is often considered demeaning to have to soil ones hands by actually testing the code. With such a sullied background, it is no wonder that production code is generally riddled with bugs.
As the authors of this book point out, all of the above are dangerous conditions. With the expansion of code reuse and RAD tools, the development of the initial iteration is going to be done at a faster pace than before. Since the number of pathways through the code is operationally infinite, the only way relatively bug-free code will be developed is by allocating more resources to testing and making the choice and tracking of test cases a more scientific endeavor. The most significant point of the ten made in this book is that the testing process should be considered on an equal basis with that of development so that both groups communicate as equals. Without that, all the fancy, efficient tools in the world are reduced to the level of mere toys.
This is a book that can and should be read by developers, managers and yes, even testers, as all will benefit from the simple words of wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Made sense and is appropriate for all!.......1999-09-17

This book gives excellent insight for the beginning QA professional. It not so detailed that developers and managers will not want anything to do with it either. It explains ways to communicate quality assurance without offending anyone. The content is concentrated on the expressing QA in a brighter light without ruffling too many feathers. I recommend it for everyone in a technical environment with the goal of attaining quality. THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY QA PROFESSIONAL.

    Book Description

The authors, members of teams that solved all 10 problems, show in detail multiple approaches for solving each problem, ranging from elementary to sophisticated, from brute-force to schemes that can be scaled to provide thousands of digits of accuracy and that can solve even larger related problems. The authors touch on virtually every major technique of modern numerical analysis: matrix computation, iterative linear methods, limit extrapolation and convergence acceleration, numerical quadrature, contour integration, discretization of PDEs, global optimization, Monte Carlo and evolutionary algorithms, error control, interval and high-precision arithmetic, and many more. The SIAM 100-Digit Challenge: A Study in High-Accuracy Numerical Computing gives concrete examples of how to justify the validity of every single digit of a numerical answer. Methods range from carefully designed computer experiments to a posteriori error estimates and computer-assisted proofs based on interval arithmetic.

5 out of 5 stars Clever techniques in a concrete context.......2004-08-29

The book is ogranized by problem, not technique, and so the motivation is apparent before the theory is introduced. Some of the solutions are so clever they seem almost magical.
