3 out of 5 stars Too much programmation in it.......2006-07-05

I thought this would be a book about how to compress things in different modes so you could make the final results nicer...Its too much about creating codecs which I dont wanna do at all !
I was bored at first chapter ;o(

2 out of 5 stars CD-ROM has value.......2005-10-14

Only CD-ROM has value, don't like the text. Not very useful to build anything.

4 out of 5 stars Good as a general introduction.......2005-06-03

I would reccommend this book if you want to learn how compression works, where the limitations come from, where future improvemens may come from and what the standards are all about.
You won't find implementation details and mathematical rigour in this book ; its goal is to explain the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-01-10

I liked this book very much. I graduated at a technical university and I wish I had had such good books there! The basics, the chapters on JPEG, MPEG-1, -2 and DV are extremely good and the other chapters give a good overview on the corresponding subjects. I do recommend this book to anyone interested in general video compression, or, e.g. how DVD works...
If I lost this book somehow I would definitely buy it again!

3 out of 5 stars Not an h.264 Book.......2004-08-17

Richardson book (H.264 and MPEG-4 Video Compression) is the best book on h.264 -- by virtue of being the only one.

The cover of Symes' book proclaims "Featuring: JVT/H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10". However, there's one chapter on JVT, and it is somewhat sketchy. The only level of real detail is on the transform. The rest of the AVC/h.264 standard receives brief and superficial coverage. The coverage of WMV-9, an analogous next gen codec, is even sketchier. It doesn't mention the SMPTE VC-9 standardization effort, based on WMV-9.

Next gen codecs aside, it's not a bad book as a general overview of compression. It has a breezy style that's easy to read. While some sections are quite thorough, it doesn't consistently dig past the surface.

Here's an example:

"Context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) is a development of arithmetic coding mentioned in Chapter 3."

-- page 243, Chapter 12, JVT

"Explanation of the arithmetic coding process is beyond the scope of this book."

-- page 47, Chapter 3, Entropy Coding

In a nut shell, this book is a good addition to the video processing bookshelf, but it won't stand as a definitive reference to this new protocol. Maybe next edition.

Book Description

Professionals in the video and multimedia industries need a book that explains industry standards for video coding and how to convert the compressed information between standards. Digital Video Transcoding for Transmission and Storage answers this demand while also supplying the theories and principles of video compression and transcoding technologies. Emphasizing digital video transcoding techniques, this book summarizes its content via examples of practical methods for transcoder implementation. It relates almost all of its featured transcoding technologies to practical applications. This volume takes a structured approach, starting with basic video transcoding concepts and progressing toward the most sophisticated systems. It summarizes material from research papers, lectures, and presentations. Organized into four parts, the text first provides the background of video coding theory, principles of video transmission, and video coding standards. The second part includes three chapters that explain the theory of video transcoding and practical problems. The third part explores buffer management, packet scheduling, and encryption in the transcoding. The book concludes by describing the application of transcoding, universal multimedia access with the emerging MPEG-21 standard, and the end-to-end test bed.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars suitable as an advanced university text.......2006-04-16

The authors give an in-depth technical explanation of the important ideas in the transcoding of digital video. The driving motive for almost all of the algorithms is to maximise compression, for storage or in bandwidth, when transmitting. The various MPEG standards are gone into, as well as H.263 and H.264. There are numerous architectural and block diagrams of the algorithms and network arrangements.

Also useful to some readers is a chapter on cryptography and conditional access. The DES is also explained, along with a general description of block and stream ciphers. Plus, of course, you can find explanations of public key ciphers, and of its most popular implementation, RSA.

The book is suitable as an advanced text for a university course. Each chapter comes with an exercise set that should prove sufficiently challenging to many students. Additionally, researchers should find the book handy. The chapters have an extensive bibliography of [mostly] journal papers.

4 out of 5 stars the book includes a lot new stuffs .......2005-12-16

Sounds good overall. I read thru most chapters and found some parts are quite new. A few chapters should be improved in new revision: it should talk about the rate distortion theory simply because the book deals with lossy video compression. The chapters which talked about MPEG standards just a simple summary and have no analysis.

4 out of 5 stars It helps me on my research.......2005-10-14

As a graduate student on doing research in transcoding systems, I like this book very much, especially on system timing, i.e. DTS, PTS, etc. The book is incomplete in one area -- it didn't apply rate-distortion theory in transcoding. The fact is it didn't talk about RD at all (even not in the introduction). The first two chapters were not well organized. Other than that, it is a fine book for good information on transcoding.

4 out of 5 stars A book provides details.......2005-10-14

I have a same feeling as other reviewer: the quality control of the book is bad. Hope that it is not a common practice in CRC. On the other hand, the book itself does provide many valuable info on transcoding. It is better than many overview papers on video coding. The truth is that you often find those papers don't provide any real technical info, but just try to label someone being a "chair" of building no-product.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing book.......2005-06-16

This book addresses an important issue of transcoding of compressed video. As far as I know, this is the only book on the market that focuses entirely on this subject.

Unfortunately, the importance of the subject matter is the only good thing I can say about this book, and this is the only reason I did not give it the lowest ranking of one star. As far as the quality is concerned, this is the worst technical book I have read. And I have worked in the field of digital communications and video compression for many years. The book has two fundamental flaws:
- Technical accuracy. No formula or graph in this book can be trusted. I am sure some of them are correct, but I found so many errors that I had to stop relying on these graphs and formulas.
- Poor language. The book contains many typos, grammatical errors and cases of incorrect or poor usage of English. My "favorite" appears right on the front page, where one of the authors is identified as working for the "Broadman Corporation". Never heard of this corporation? Do not worry. It is actually Broadcom, as mentioned later in the text.

The publisher of this book, CRC Press is well known for producing good quality publications. It is very sad that in this particular case the corporate quality control failed. It is especially disappointing for such an expensive book. I think an honorable thing on the part of the publisher and the authors would be to recall this book. The publisher should offer to those who have purchased it an option of either getting a full refund, or replacing the purchased book with a corrected edition.

Book Description

JPEG2000: Image Compression Fundamentals, Standards and Practice is an essential reference for professional engineers and academic researchers in the fields of communication, image processing, signal processing, information theory, and multimedia. It has specific applications for those involved in the development of software and hardware solutions for multimedia, internet, and medical imaging applications, and for those pursuing research in image and video compression.
The book is suitable as a primary text for a course in image compression; it would also be helpful in the context of a more general class covering multimedia compression at an in-depth level. Final year engineering undergraduate students pursuing projects in multimedia compression and/or communication would also find the book a useful tool.
JPEG2000: Image Compression Fundamentals, Standards and Practice is written in four parts, to serve the interests of a wide readership.
Representing about half the total text, Part I of the book provides a thorough and up-to-date background in the fundamentals of image compression, including topics not previously brought together in a single volume.
Part 2 contains a complete description of the JPEG2000 standard. This description is written in such a way as to be completely self-contained from an implementation perspective, while it contains numerous references to the fundamental developments in Part 1. Together, Parts 1 and 2 serve the complementary roles of explanation and exposition in relation to both the JPEG2000 standard and modern image compression techniques.
Part 3 of the book is devoted to the implementation and exploitation of the JPEG2000 standard, containing guidelines, suggestions, and analyses for both software and hardware oriented applications.
Part 4 describes other key image compression standards, namely JPEG and JPEG-LS. The purpose of this material is to allow the reader to compare the capabilities and complexity associated with these standards with those of JPEG2000. This final part of the book also serves to provide a practical demonstration of some of the fundamental techniques introduced in Part 1 which are not demonstrated by the JPEG2000 standard.
About the CD-ROM: Included with the book is a compact disc containing documentation, binaries, and all source code to the Kakadu software tools. This software provides a complete C++ implementation of JPEG2000 Part 1, demonstrating many of the principles described in the text itself. The software is frequently referenced from the text as an additional resource for understanding complex or subtle aspects of the standard. Conversely, the software makes frequent reference to the text and has been written to mesh with the terminology and notation employed therein.

1 out of 5 stars The book is one of the worst of books I have read.......2003-04-02

If one wants to learn jpeg2000, he can look for some papers and source codes which are better than this book.
If one wants to learn theory of image coding, he can read some other books much better than this book.

This book is only for fools.

5 out of 5 stars Great Work.......2003-01-01

The author of this book is a genius. His work should be required reading for all. Definatly one of the great minds in our time.

3 out of 5 stars Know why you're buying this book.......2002-05-04

This book is quite good but any potential buyer should know exactly why he would buy it and if it really matches his expectations. Indeed, this book is hardly a helper in implementing jpeg2000, but more a reference book for highly skilled image processing professionals/researchers. It is divided in two parts: the first part is about general image processing topics and provide some explanation about the choices made for jpeg2000. It is the "theorical" part. The second part is about jpeg2000 itself. The latter could have been much more practical and better directed to implementors. In fact, I was thinking of this book being able to clarify some aspects of the norm that are quite blur, but I find the way it is written, even for the second part, overly complicated and scientifically oriented, not "engineering" oriented. Most of the topics are better explained in the norm itself than in this book, even if the latter is much more detailed. Clearly there is room for another book on the topic but this time directed to implementors, with less theory, less scientific notations, are more, much more, real world examples working on real bit-streams.

My team is working on H.264 video over a MPEG-2 transport stream packet. This book helps a lot on learning systems timing, which is hard to find from any books. I don't understand why so many books discuss about MPEG video, but very few tells about systems timing. Where are those "Professors" ?

5 out of 5 stars Good book, but over priced.......2004-06-30

The book is good because no one provided many details as given in this book. But just as other Kluwer books, it is over-priced.

3 out of 5 stars Average and overpriced.......2004-01-14

This book offers a good intro for someone just entering the field of digital video transport; however, for a well exposed individual operating in this space, it is weak. As my background is in digital signal processing and comm systems, I have read and seen better materials, because of this I have to consider it as extremely overpriced. Its worth in my opinion is at most $80.00.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Book on Image processing.......2006-10-03

This is the book to have on the subject! It covers almost any aspect that you can think of in image/video processing. This is a MATH intensive book and it will not tell you how to directly implement any of its concepts in code. The author assumes that the reader will be able to do this on there own. Topics are very well explained, but sometimes I needed to reread a topic 3 or 4 times and go over the math a couple times to fully understand. Great book to have as an encyclopedia like resource on the shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for methods of image and video processing.......2006-02-02

There is a 2nd edition of this book that was published in July 2005, so all reviews earlier than that are referring to the first edition. Regardless, the second edition of this book is just as good as the first. There are many texts that do a good job of covering image processing, but few do such a good job of covering all of the aspects of video processing - motion detection and estimation, video enhancement and restoration, and video segmentation. There is an entire section on video compression which discusses the H.261 standard, wavelets and video compression, object-based video coding, and the various MPEG standards. There are also articles on video indexing and retrieval and a unified framework for video browsing and retrieval.
In the area of image processing, there is much good information here, but the basics are better explained in "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzales and Woods. Once you master that book, this makes a good secondary reference on image processing. Although this book does go over some image processing basics, it is better at explaining more advanced concepts such as multiframe image restoration, wavelet denoising, 3D shape reconstruction from multiple views, and statistical methods for image segmentation. There are many bad books out there that are collections of articles, but don't let that scare you off. This really is a collection of very good articles published together in a coherent fashion.
There are plenty of equations, example images, and instructive figures in the articles to help explain each concept. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book !.......2002-10-15

This book is just GREAT.
It covers almost every single ascpect of image and video processing. Everything is in deep and very good explained. A lot of before-and-after example pictures (important ones in color) are provided too. But beware. You need a fairly good understanding of math to read the book. It is not intended to explain how to use Photoshop, but rather how to write your own ;-)
This book is not a read-along book. Sometimes you have to read a section 2 or 3 times to understand it.
I think sometimes a good Snippet of C-Code would help to understand, but this is acceptable.
Again: A outstanding book, which fully covers all my needs.
The price of 100 us$ is ok, because it's a lot of a book...

4 out of 5 stars Image Processing for the mathematically inclined.......2001-05-12

This is an encyclopedia of image processing topics. It contains some introductory material to help people understand what images are and how to process them. The majority of the text, however, is for experienced people wanting to look up topics.

This book is big. It is about 8"x11" by 900 pages. It contains material from 100 different professionals on 50 different topics.

The style is academic. The editor is the editor of the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing. The page style is similar to what you would see in an IEEE Transaction.

There is plenty of math. The text explains the mathematics, but not to the depth I would like to see.

The authors illustrate the techniques with many images. If there are no "before and after" images in an image processing book, reject it. Well, this book has plenty of images. That is a strong point.

A week point is there is no source code illustrating the techniques and algorithms. I find this a major weakness, but one that is not unique to this book.

The authors leave much to the reader. This is not a read from cover to cover book. The reader must go slow, take notes, study, and read again to understand the material.

All in all, this is a good source of knowledge on image processing. If you work with images and write software to process images, you should have this book on your desk.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent journal-quality round-up.......2000-09-23

This is a very nice reference work for image processing professionals. It is a collection of articles by various experts in aspects of image processing, reporting on the state-of-the-art in their particular domains. The coverage is broad and deep. However, it is not for everyone. The writing style is that of a refereed journal. If you are not comfortable with that style of exposition, or if you are simply trying to find a snippet of code to implement a particular algorithm, this is not the book for you. At the other extreme, do not expect to find new and startling insights into the field that you did your dissertation on. However, if you want to understand the current state of the art of a colleague's field, or if you need to expand your expertise into a new area of image processing, this is a very good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Balance of breadth and depth.......2004-10-21

This book is not meant for beginners. The reviewer who gave the book one star is simply clueless, who obviously chose to ignore the preface, which clearly says that "this book is for compressionists ..." (i.e., not for total beginners, who should see Digital Video for Dummies).

The author of this book manages to do exactly what he promises, which is to detail the use of a vast number of tools, to generate digital video in countless formats, on innumerable types of media. The possible permutations when all tools, formats, and media are taken together is simply mind-numbing, which is why such a book is necessary in the first place. Any dedicated amateur (or even professional) compressionist needs to know whether there is a better way to do what he or she stumbled across by accident on the vast Internet. This book very clearly describes many of the best combination of tools and strategies to produce the best content possible. The writing style is very fluid and friendly, although I would stop short of calling the book an easy read, because the amount of information is too overwhelming for a straight read; instead, I would use it almost like a reference and jump to a particular chapter to refresh my memory and skills just before undertaking a new compression task.

With so much information to write about, I am sure the book was an organizational nightmare for the author, and although he did an overall great job in organizing it, there are still numerous spots where he could have done a better job of introducing a topic before using it to explain other topics. Examples that come to mind: referring to DirectShow without describing it, or creating examples based on video editing tools like Cleaner without first introducing the tool (there are others).

All in all, this is a book that I will continue to use often.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting in some Ways.......2003-05-23

The rest of the reviewers wrote glowing responses to this book. From our perspective, it could include more background and easily to understand steps on how to utilize some of the tools, techniques, and methods of compression. Are there any other books out there for digital compression in more detail that take into consideration the latest technology issues that might have a bearing such as DTV, HDTV, World Wide Uses on legacy systems as well as state of the art systems.

Compression for Great Digital Video
Ben Waggoner

Full Disclosure: I am not a compressionist nor have I ever met Ben. Although, he has answered more than one of my questions in the COW Cleaner Forum.

This book is for compressionists, people who want to be compressionists, and people who on occasion need to pretend they're compressionists (pg. 3). With this clear objective stated up front, Ben opens up and let's his brain pour out over each and every page, all 447 of them.

Right from the beginning I was more than a little intimidated and excited at the same time, just from reviewing the Table of Contents. Ben organizes his knowledge into 25 chapters, a glossary, index and a CD-ROM. I will not list all 25 chapters but trust me, if you can think of it Ben covers it.

The first section (Chapters 1-11) is about general principles of vision, compression, and how compressed video operates (pg. 3). No matter what compressionist category you think you fall into, you will learn something in these first chapters, even if it turns how to be how much you forgot since grade school.

The next section (Chapters 12-24) covers specific video tools and technologies (pg. 3). Ben covers them all and yes, I read them all even the ones that I do not use. Most of the information here I was already formula because when I first started working with Cleaner I studied (yes, studied) the manual. However, now that I have my feet wet the information covered here makes more sense.

The last Chapter (Chapter 25) consists of three extensive tutorials that highlight many of the concepts, formats, and tools discussed throughout the book (pg. 3). They cover; Streaming, Progressive Downloading, and Animation for Video Games. So, if your work covers any of these your in luck, if not (such as me) than you may need to read certain Chapters again to pick up what you missed the first time. The CD only contains short snippets of each projects source files. If you'd like the full-length content you will have to order a DVD-ROM from Ben's website. I have to cry foul here, sure you don't need the full-length content to `get the point' but no where on the outside of the book does it tell you that you will only get snippets. I mention this for those of you that get angry over `thin slim' CD's.

Compression for Great Digital Video is an easy and delightful read. It's not very often that you come across a book that covers this much technical information and yet still manages to be clearly understood. Ben fully explains everything that he mentions and often he even provides additional references should you require more information. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who find themselves compressing digital video.

2 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the title of this book........2004-01-20

This book belongs to the kind that gives you highest expectation before strongest disappointment.

Implied by its title, I bet most people will presume it focuses on the DESIGN of a video codec, not a REVIEW of various techniques in standards.

Unfortunately, only Chap. 13 has sth to do with DESIGN.

This book may be useful for people who do not know much about video coding, but it's not for people who looks for information on how to design a video codec.

From my experience, open source/free software packages, like MPEG4IP, MPEG2encode/decode, TMN H.263 codec, and standards documentation will offer much much more for a reader interested in DESIGN.

Not recommended because the title is too misleading.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, Maybe not the best.......2003-10-23

If you a rookie in video codec design, you can get basic knowledge from this book. Basic algorithms are explaned in detail(Such as, DCT, Motion Estimation and Compensation, and Entropy Coding). Read this book and read source code you'll know a lot.

2 out of 5 stars Definately NOT The Best Video Book So Far.......2003-01-30

This book attempts to tell you everything about all the video
compression standards in less than 300 pages. Now does that
really sound possible ?

It was obviously put together this way to appeal to the widest
possible audience, and therefore dilutes its content on each
of the individual coding standards (MPEG-1,2,4 H.263, H.264)
to the point of being useless.

JPEG gets a disproportionate 5 pages, which is not video really,
and then MPEG-2 gets 3 pages and MPEG-4 1 page. Then H.261
H.263 and H.26L are grouped together and are discussed in 13
pages.

Then the book goes into Motion Estimation/Compensation, but
of course it's presented as a generic subject not specific
to any of the standards, which is okay for the pure ME part
but the various encoding modes of the individual standards
are lost (hey, isn't this a HUGE part of understanding
video compression ?).

Rate control, the brains of the video codec, is glossed over.
There is a brief intro to Rate-Distortion theory which doesn't
mention clearly that this is impractical from an implementation
standpoint, and then a brief rehash of TM5 for MPEG-2 and TM8
for H.263.

So far, the only decent book I've found on video compression
(where my interest has been MPEG-2) is "Techniques and Standards
for Image, Video and Audio Coding" by Rao and Hwang.

Then again, I haven't found a thing in any of these books that
you cannot find on the web for free that is much better.

5 out of 5 stars The best video codec book so far.......2002-10-17

I bought many video related technical books, and I have to say this is the best one on video compression. My other favourite book is: "Video Demystified, 3rd Edition" on the general subject of video technology.

This book not only introduces theory and mathematical backgroups for video coding, but also explains to you the "why" in an easy-to-understand manner. The book also summarizes a lot of practical techniques that people developed during the recent years when implementating some of video coding algorithms.

It is not the amount of information presented in this book that attacted me, it is the way the author introducing those concepts that really brought my interest. Once you have the interest established and the necessary backgroup, you can now go search the internet for all detail video compression information you need (MPEG1/2/4, H261/263/264 standards, fast ME algorithms, rate-distortion algorithm, source code, etc).

I also highly recommend this book as a senior undergrad text book on video coding.

4 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2002-09-27

The book contains a good coverage of the material related to video CODECc design .This book deals with the intricacies of the video presents separate sections on key components of video CODECs and system design issues like motion estimation and compensation, transform coding, entropy coding, pre- and post-processing, distortion and complexity, transmission of coded video, and platforms.
Author provides a good online help in case of any confusion or doubts which is of immense help.

5 out of 5 stars A great MPEG Systems reference too.......2002-03-28

I found this book to be a great resource for the engineering and design fundamentals that relate to the question "how is all that data formatted and organized in digital television broadcasting?" The MPEG-2 Systems Standard is one of the foundations of digital television. If you're interested in how MPEG-2 really works at the system level, you'll find this book an excellent resource. The chapter on MPEG Transport by itself is worth the price of the book, but it also does a great job explaining another arcane MPEG-2 Standard, Digital Storage Media Command and Control (DSM-CC). It turns out DSM-CC is very useful in data broadcasting, but if you were to pick up the IEC standard itself and try to make sense of it, you'd find it very challenging.

Even though broadcasters have not started transmitting data along with digital television, this book sets the framework for understanding how it will be done. It's written by those experts in the field who actually designed the standard, so you know the information is accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Great work.......2002-02-28

I highly recommend this book to all those who develop or maintain data broadcasting systems.

The good point is that it is not at all a replication of the specification (though a true copy of the A/90 spec is added as an appendix). The concepts are clear, progressive and sufficiently illustrated.

Chapter 3 alone tells you most you need to know about MPEG-2 Systems standard. I gained extra insight from it even after I had studied the original 13818-1 spec.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work.......2001-10-31

This book, written by several of data broadcast specification authors, is The Definitive Work on the ATSC Data Broadcast specification.

If you are an implementer of data broadcasting, you need exactly two things: a copy of the specification and a copy of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Beware.......2003-01-11

This book claims to be Video and Audio...the audio part is ca. 20 pages out of 300, is horribly outdated, and is not technical enough to explain psychoacoustic principles involved..it is generally substandard. The video parts also neglect the 'reasons' for various techiniques. The book serves as a compendium of techniques without providing underpinnings.

A beautiful quote 'Mpeg 3 was dropped ... etc' Only if you have the limited point of view of this book....it should called 'Video with Audio' not 'Video and Audio'. There is a BIG difference.

In many respects, DVD Demystified provides more useful figures and information.

Not recommended.
