Get the complete study guide.......2007-10-02
This book is outdated and not very useful. If you know the material, it is simply review. If you don't know it and are really trying to study for the test, this book does not have enough information. Skip it and get the "Complete study guide". By looking at even the sample tests of that book, you can tell it is a much better read.
Don't waste your money here.
A+ certification.......2007-08-24
I needed this book in order to study for my networking certification for my job. so far, very helpful.
A decent beginner's guide, but not much else.......2007-04-06
Just a quick background: I am not a computer professional, but I have been involved with computers all my life, and I have a very broad knowledge of the IT field.
As I decided to take the A+ exam, I felt that I could pass it with no problems at all, but I wanted to get a quick comprehensive guide to brush up on my skills anyway. After browsing in the store for a bit, I decided on the Fast Pass book. At first glance, it seemed like a really good refresher book for people who already had some computer knowledge.
After I got the book and began reading it, I was immediately baffled by its organization. I respect that the author tried to organize the book in a similar manner to the A+ exam outline, but in all honesty, this is not a good way to organize a book. Using this organization method, oftentimes you will be introduced to a complex technology concept before you recieve the foundation that concept is based on.
The book is very inconsistent, as well. Most of the time it reads like a casual encyclopedia entry, but there are times when the author drops into a technical-manual style or a personal aside without warning. It also seems as if the little "Note" and "Tip" sidebars are thrown in at random just to look pretty, even though the text that they contain could and should be in the body.
As others have stated, I was immediately turned off by this book as soon as I read that "BlueTooth" was an "infrared" standard, which is at one point in the book quoted as having a range of 10 feet, only to later be upped to 35 feet! And 802.11a is the "current" wireless standard? I honestly cannot believe the information in this book considering its publication in late 2006.
Overall, if you don't know much about computers, this book offers you a bit of history and foundational learning, but you will defintely want to go somewhere else if you're actually studying for the exam.
Good text for A+ preparation.......2007-04-05
After reviewing this book I have decided to adopt it as a text for my high school computer tech class. It is easy to read, clearly highlights the new A+ test requirements and logically presents the materials needed to study for the test.
Must Have.......2007-03-16
For anyone planning on getting A+ certified this is a must have book. It is both current and explicit. I can't rate it highly enough.

Book Description
The A+ certification from CompTIA certifies the competency of service technicians in the computer industry. Revised exams are due out Q4 of this year. A+ candidates must pass two exams—Core Hardware and Operating System Technologies. These two A+ exams cover a lot of ground, and many candidates who have read a Study Guide or taken a course are looking for well-organized review guides to help them brush up on key topics. The A+ Fast Pass is that book!

One-stop study resource for the A+ exam.......2006-11-15
It is a rare thing when one book not only provides all of the information you need to pass a certification exam, but does so in a highly condensed fashion with an economical price. This book was my sole study resource for the A+ exam: after a couple weeks of study and a few practice tests, I passed the exam with a comfortable margin and was able to make educated guesses on the few questions for which I didn't immediately know the answers. When I began studying I already had a practical familiarity of the subjects covered: I have been building and repairing my own systems for a number of years and am very comfortable in the Win9x/2K/XP operating environment. Having that background, this book was able to convey very quickly the more theoretical and structured knowledge that corresponds to building, repairing, and troubleshooting personal computers. While people generally seem to recommend consulting multiple sources during study, if you have some prior background and experience with the subjects covered in the A+ exam, take good notes, and run through a few practice exams to prepare you for the format and expectations of the test, this book should provide you with all of the information you need. It is a delightfully valuable resource, and I cannot recommend it more highly.
Best A+ Book Ever.......2006-02-24
I teach an A+ certificaion course at a school for disabled students. I tried using a few different books because the students were having a hard time with the material and none of them were passing the tests. Even Mike Meyer's books were not helping the students to pass and he is considered kind of an authority on A+ certification preparation. When we began using the A+ Fast Pass, the students started passing the tests and said they liked it much more than any other books they read. While reading through it, I knew I was reading a truly superior A+ preparaion book. The problem with all the other A+ books out there is they do not follow the actual exam objectives available on CompTIA's website. The A+ Fast Pass is organized according to the exam objectives so you know it has everything in it you need to pass the tests.
Good review book, but a lot of the material is out of date.......2004-11-24
This book is a good review guide for the A+ exams, however a lot of the material in it is out of date.
Excellent helpdesk info, but insufficent for the A+ exam.......2004-04-08
Before taking the two A+ exams, I read this book twice, was able to answer all the practice questions in the book as well as all of the 70+ questions on the CD, not to mention the 70+ flash card questions. I had everything memorized.
But, I failed the A+ Hardware exam.
This book does NOT prepare you to take the A+ exam with all of its "helpdesk scenario" questions, such as "A client calls you and says they can boot up, but no image is appearing on the screen. Some of the possible causes are..."
This book is excellent for all around knowledge of hardware and operating systems, but it's not a good choice as an exam prep. Stick with Exam Cram.
I am now A+ Certified!.......2004-04-02
I received this book last week, looked over it over a weekend, and signed up for the 2 new A+ exams which were available the next week. I took the A+ Core yesterday and the A+ OS today. I passed both, thanks in part to this book.
This book gets right down to the meat of it and doesn't skip a beat. As soon as you open up the book, you won't be able to put it down. It reads very nicely. But dont get me wrong, this is only intended as a review of key concepts, so you may have to go elsewhere to get certain facts.
I would highly recommend this book for those of you that don't want to spend a week reading a tome (I won't name names here... but a certain corporate giant publishes books over 1000 pages to help pass their exams... which is great, but not if you want to get your certification fast). Best of all, it has a CD with flash cards and 2 practice exams. What more can you ask for?
Here is my advice. If you are thinking about taking the exam, start with this book. It is rougly 280 pages, and it will give you an idea of what you need to study up on. Good luck!

Good combo with other book.......2007-05-19
I used this book as a secondary book, to review my knowledge 2 days before the exam, I pass the test with the help from newhorizon, ALL-IN-ONE and this book.
In my opinion, this book is written very well with easy to understand writing style as well, the explanations are very concise and clear.
I will give 5 stars if this book has better practice exams, the questions presented by this book are not enough and mostly just require you to memorize the material in order to answer that correctly instead of fully understanding that.
Another thing that bothered me was a question on how to remove broadcast storm, the answer from this book is by creating vlan, I think that the one that remove broadcast storm is STP (correct me if i am wrong) and moreover the author didn't mention anything about broadcast storm in his discussion about switch.
The other things are just good, I would recommend everyone to use this book combined WITH OTHER BOOK as well.
quick baseline book.......2005-09-11
This is an easy book to read to get a baseline 60% of what you need to pass Security+. I passed the 100 question Security+ test today. I recommend this cost effective book to start. My most valuable assets were measureup.com and filling in the holes of my knowledge with up date material and research. I dont think there is a two book set to help you pass this test. Spend your money on transcenders and measureup and fill in from there.
Author's rebuttle to D. Duffy.......2005-03-07
I beg to differ with the review posted on 11/13/2004 from a D. Duffy. I am the author of the Security+ Fast Pass book. I have reviewed the content and double checked my original sources, the sources listed by D. Duffy, and a few additional sources. The information about asymmetric cryptography and public key cryptography in the Security+ Fast Pass book is correct and in-line with all widely recognized and authoritative texts on the subject.
If by "wrong" D. Duffy means that I did not fully explain the entire concept nor went into mathematical detail about the algorithms involved or the software code used for implementation - then I didn't. This book is about learning the facts and details related to the Security+ exam. While some background and supporting documentation is needed in general and is provided in this text, the book's design purposely focuses only on the material essential for the exam.
I would like D. Duffy to respond to me directly the contact or support links at www.sybex.com. Please indicate exactly what you find incorrect and where you have found contradictory data. Please provide page numbers and ISBNs.
Thank you.
-James Michael Stewart
Passed the test using this as a secondary text.......2004-11-13
I passed the test with a 836. This is midway between the passing cutoff (764) and the maximum score (900).
I used FastPass as a quick review before taking the test. If you are new to InfoSec, as I was, read a full study guide first.
The one I used was "Security+ Study Guide, 2nd Edition" published by Sybex 2004, ISBN 0-7821-4350-4. This book is on CompTIA's Authorized Quality Curriculum list for this test and it deserves to be.
If you are a seasoned InfoSec pro FastPass may be all you need to pass the test. One caution: FastPass gets asymmetric cryptology and public/private keys wrong (the Study Guide gets it right; also goto rsalabs.com and click Crypto FAQ).
Read my Amazon review on the "Security+ Study Guide, 2nd Edition" mentioned above.

Customer Reviews:
I bought this book and passed the test........2006-04-16
This book is easy to read and well laid-out. I took the practice exams on the CD and downloaded the free Cramsession study guide. I higly recommend this book.
Not even close to the VUE exam for Network+.......2006-03-24
I recently took the exam and was shocked how different the exam questions and topics were vs. what's printed in this book. This book is easy to read and you do learn a lot ..but just don't let it be the only book you use to prep for the exam. I don't think any of the sample test questions from the CD (included with the book) were even close to the exam questions. Despite all the negatives, I ended up passing the exam but I'm giving the credit to my own luck and experience instead of this book.
Great review book.......2005-12-31
This book is a great review book and a great source to give you a feel for the test. It is not a study guide or ref. book. It does have a few technical errors covered by another reviewer but overall it's a book very worth the money and time.
Great Review.......2005-09-08
Even with about six years of networking experience, I believe that I benefitted greatly from the Network+ FastPass book. Author Bill Ferguson does a good job of throwing away the fluff without completely losing reader attention. This book has a great layout, and is basically compiled of podium-kickers (something an instructor does to highlight *special* information). It is a great book for anyone with a good amount of experience or someone with a great memory. It will definitly help secure a passing score.
Good, short book........2005-08-20
Overall, I like this book. This book is short and to-the-point, but it has some small errors. For example, on pages 76-80 it repeatedly refers to the Network Layer as either layer 7 or layer 4 of the OSI model. The Network Layer is layer 3 of the OSI model, and it is important to know this. On page 55, in the author's discussion of AppleTalk he refers to one protocol as RTMP sometimes, and RMTP othertimes. He also seems to be confused as to whether this protocol has an 8-bit network address and a 16-bit node address, or vice versa.
The errors aside, this is a good book and I would recommend it. I would suggest reading it twice to get a solid grasp of the fundamentals of networking. I am learning more about networking by reading this book than I did by reading my college networking textbook.
By the way, don't trust "Gunny's" rating. He has somehow managed to write 1567+ reviews, and every one I've seen has been a 5-star review. Let's face it, if someone has managed to write enough reviews to become a "Top 50 Reviewer", there's an extremely strong chance that his full-time job is to write positive reviews for the publisher.

A summary of the subject.......2007-05-15
I am approaching this review with the understanding that this book is basically a summary of what you need to know for exam 70-270. I also read the Microsoft Training Kit book for this exam. This books covers a bit of information in its 300 pages, but I certainly would not rely on this one book to teach you what you need to know. The enclosed CD contains two practice exams and flash cards. The book's main weakness, however, is in the questions both on the CD and the ones at the end of each chapter. The questions are not the verbose type found on Microsoft exams and they are much easier - too easy in fact to be of much use. If you want to utilize good questions for the exam try MeasureUp and SelfTest. Their questions are of a higher degree of difficulty and provide explanations for both the correct and incorrect answers.
Good Book, Quick Read.......2007-02-27
I read this book and also took a week long MCSE class. I took my 70-270 test today and passed with an 873.
Great book to read after reading Microsoft's book.......2006-06-12
This book fills in alot of the gaps that the Microsoft book leaves out. I believe it is a must to own this book if you are planning to take the 70-270 exam. I must note that the previous reviewer "Jedi" was absoulutly correct in his reviews and he helped me in picking the right books to pass the exam. This book is well written and should be used 2-3 days before going into the exam after using the free Measureup test provided with the Microsoft book. I must say that the Measureup test is VERY good and you will understand alot of it by reading this book and reviewing your answers on the Measureup cd after you get them wrong to see why you got them wrong.
I had no prior expierence going into the exam and used this book along with Microsoft's to pass the 70-270 exam.
Just what you need to accompany your studies.......2006-04-11
I used the Microsoft 70-270 book for studying, and a few days before the exam, I just felt completely not ready for it. It is not as good as a book as the earlier reviews have said (read my review of it for an honest opinion). To pass the Microsoft exams these days, you need more than one study source.
Two days before my exam, I picked up this book and read it cover to cover. Needless to say, it put in perspective things that the Training Kit made so confusing, and the tables and charts in the book are great for learners.
I passed the exam, and believe that the majority of that success came from this book being read in two days than the Microsoft one being read for a month.
About the only thing the MS book is good for are the Measure Up tests that are included, but you will have to do quite a bit of external research to get things down if you use that book.
While I wouldn't recommend this book as a sole study guide (it wasn't intended for that), I would definitely tell all 70-270 takers to read this book start to end if they don't immediately know that difference between winnt.sif, unattend.txt or RIsetup.exe and RIPrep.exe amongst other things such as Group Policy.
Finally, though I used only this and the Microsoft book, please research other 70-270 study guide books to accompany this book, because the MS 70-270 book is just not enough anymore, not with how much the exam has changed since its first release. I know that Sybex are always good, and that the author of this book (Lisa Donald) also has a Sybex study guide.
Remember, take a lot of practice tests and learn from the mistakes you make on them!

Todd Lammle at his best.........2007-04-13
If you are studying for your CCNA and getting ready to PASS it, you need to have this book. It is very well written and is great to get prepared for your CCNA exam, you will not pass your exam using only this book though, i highly recommend you also get Ciscopress Intro+ICND, the CCNA FastPass is great to repeat stuff you already know because it's very short comparing to Ciscopress books and it has everything you need to remember pretty much, the book comes with a test engine CD, don't trust it too much, it's too easy.. BUT the book is great! Highly recommended.
great refresher.......2006-07-07
This book is great for people who already have a strong Cisco background. I have been out of networking for a couple years, pursuing a masters, and I wanted to validate my past experiences on my resume. I read this book and everything came back to me.
Summary of writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801".......2005-08-02
Basically this book is a summary of writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801". Even the words are the exact same (verbatim)! The only difference is that the "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801" has more discussion of theory and basic knowledge involved. My guess is that the publisher only "cut and paste" and orginize in different style.
I don't say that this is good or bad book. I just want to inform you what you will get from this book. If you have the writer's book "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801", then you may want to consider the following:
1) Do you need another book with redundant content (even with verbatim words)?
2) Do you need a summary book of the "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801"?
If you say "yes" to at least one of the above questions, then go ahead and buy this book. If you say "no", then maybe you want to check out Ciscopress's CCNA exam preparation books. This way, you can get different point of view of how to prepare CCNA exam; which I think will enrich your knowledge and preparation.
Now if you don't have the writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801", then you may get this book as a study guide. However keep in mind that as mentioned previously, this book is more of a summary which include minimal background theory. Therefore if you think you don't have proper understanding of such theory, you might want to pick up the writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801" instead.
Either path you choose, Lamme's book of CCNA preparations have been recognized as a "good book to pass CCNA exam". Please note that this statement is not advertising. This statement have been said by numerous people who had good experience in reading Lamme's and passed the CCNA exam in first try. So you should not go wrong! :)
Final word, I wish you all good luck to pass CCNA exam at first try. Keep in mind that CCNA certification only looks good in resume, however it does not guarantee you to get your "dream job". Heck, even a lot of CCIE have the same problem. Another important side is that you should have various "big-corporation" networking knowledge as well. Think of Cisco certification as "validation" or "formality" of your networking knowledge and skill and NOT as "guarantee" of getting dream jobs :D
Good Enough To Pass.......2004-09-10
I took the 840-801 Exam. I figure that one 90 minute 55 question test is better than two 60 minute 55 question tests. The test had 3 lab simulations, and quite a few questions on OSPF routing. I had taken the cisco academy class online prior to reading this book, and I have done many labs on real cisco equipment. I feel this book is best used as an accessory to the labs. Overall though this is a good book to use as a guide to help you pass the exam. However, I would not suggest picking up this book if you have no experience with networking at all. The book covers what you need to pass the test and not so much the major conceptual knowege that I feel a good netowork tech should have.
Making the final steps a bit easier........2003-11-26
Ready to tackle the 640-801 CCNA Exam? Want to do some last minute prepping? Looking for the Sybex Exam Notes? With the release of the CCNA Fast Pass you can now get that final study session and be ready to go.
The book's new name, replacing the Exam Notes series, has the same material you have come to expect from Sybex and Todd Lammle. The book takes the objectives, breaks them down 1 by 1 and gives you the meat the subject.
This is the perfect add-on the CCNA Study and Virtual Lab for the 801 Exam. One thing that I like about this book is that even though it is a "cram" type of reading, there are labs and exercises that you can work on.
The book is broken down in to four chapters or areas and each one covers a great deal material. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not the end-all book; you will need other material in order to pass the exam.
Also included is a cd with a number of practice tests and overall this is an excellent final review book and well worth the investment.
