Book Description
This book will help you solve more than 300 of the most common and not-so-common tasks that working Visual Basic 2005 programmers face every day. If you're a seasoned .NET developer, beginning Visual Basic programmer, or a developer seeking a simple and clear migration path from VB6 to Visual Basic 2005, the Visual Basic 2005 Cookbook delivers a practical collection of problem-solving recipes for a broad range of Visual Basic programming tasks.
The concise solutions and examples in the Visual Basic 2005 Cookbook range from simple tasks to the more complex, organized by the types of problems you need to solve. Nearly every recipe contains a complete, documented code sample showing you how to solve the specific problem, as well as a discussion of how the underlying technology works and that outlines alternatives, limitations, and other considerations. As with all O'Reilly Cookbooks, each recipe helps you quickly understand a problem, learn how to solve it, and anticipate potential tradeoffs or ramifications.
Useful features of the book include:
- Over 300 recipes written in the familiar O'Reilly Problem-Solution-Discussion format
- Hundreds of code snippets, examples, and complete solutions available for download
- VB6 updates to alert VB6 programmers to code-breaking changes in Visual Basic 2005
- Recipes that target Visual Basic 2005 features not included in previous releases
- Code examples covering everyday data manipulation techniques and language fundamentals
- Advanced projects focusing on multimedia and mathematical transformations using linear algebraic methods
- Specialized topics covering files and file systems, printing, and databases
In addition, you'll find chapters on cryptography and compression, graphics, and special programming techniques. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, the Visual Basic 2005 Cookbook is sure to save you time, serving up the code you need, when you need it.

Useful, but also contains filler.......2007-07-09
There are various sections in this book that are pretty basic and unnecessary to even an amateur programmer but there are also lots of other sections that are just chock full of great stuff and even advanced programmers would benefit from them. It also suffers from the common tendency to say very simple things using a lot of words in order to take up a lot of space. I think I even found a tip or two which show up twice in different sections. That being said, there's still a whole lot of worthwhile material in this book.

Outstanding Reference for the "Rest" Of Us.......2007-04-04
If you're new to programming in Visual Basic .NET, but have programmed in some other langauge before, there is always this barrier that one faces when they know, to a certain degree, the task they want to accomplish, but often fall short trying to figure out the syntax or method to implement it here. That is what this book does. It's an essential cookbook, in the language of choice, that bridges that barrier.
It's also a great side-companion for beginners, mainly because the intro books do a fair job of getting people started, but they also need to figure out specific tasks or methods of doing things that tutorial books won't cover. It does not overstate the obvious, and it serves up pretty clear impressions and explanations on what it delivers.
Great ideas for the newbie.......2007-03-17
Very helpful for a casual programmer like myself. Just remember to download the "recipies" to avoid retyping.
Very useful VB 2005 reference.......2007-03-09
I've found this book quite useful. There are lots of practical tips, tricks and techniques for VB 2005. I've gleaned a multitude of ideas for use in an intermediate VB class that I teach.

This large book, written by a long-time Unix consultant and his staff, can serve as a fine in-house training guide and reference tool. By interspersing how-to information and reference tables with brief quizzes and exercises, the authors of Unix Made Easy make it more likely that readers will retain information. System administrators might want to think about giving or loaning this book to all Unix newbies under their care.
The guide opens with a quick tour of Unix that includes logging in, exploring directory structures, creating files, and other basic jobs. Then, the authors explain vi using conceptual drawings that are superior for a computer book. Unfortunately, Unix Made Easydoesn't cover other editors as well, although it provides plenty of details on and excellent conceptual drawings of editing aids grep, sed, and awk.
The book's final chapters teach individual tasks, such as printing, using online help, and using Motif. In the section about using the Internet, the exercises (such as using FTP to get a list of mailing lists) make the last part of this book as much a guide to the global network as a guide to Unix. Unix Made Easy covers only two Web browsers--Mosaic and Lynx--before wrapping up with an appetite-whetting taste of C and Korn shell programming and environment modification.
Book Description
Written as a tutorial, this improved edition of UNIX Made Easy, Second Edition provides updated coverage, including new UNIX features such as the X Window System, current improvements to UNIX SVR4, and Internet connectivity options.

Great Hands on Learning aid f/UNIX.......2006-06-07
This book was recommended to me by my coworker who knew Unix pretty well that didn't come from a Unix background. After having taken a couple CBTs and owning some reference manuals, I still wasn't all "THAT" savvy with Unix. I'm nearly finished with the book and I can say that now while I don't completely understand all the inner workings of Unix. This book DEFINITELY succeeded where all the other resources I mentined above failed.
The strength in this book are the exercises that reinforce whats being discussed. If you're looking for a "hand-on" way to learn Unix, this is the book you need.
A Excellent Tutorial-Based Approach to Learning UNIX.......2006-04-18
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to get comfortable with the UNIX commandline environment. The book is primarily geared toward the novice. And as such, it will show you the ropes -- by first explaining something, then having you actually perform a series of steps that demonstrate and reinforce what you've just learned. In a nutshell, this is a tutorial-based approach to learning UNIX. And I've long been an advocate of this approach to learning computers, especially when learning something unfamiliar. In my opinion, it is simply the very best approach to getting you up to speed quickly.
Most other books on the subject of UNIX seem to be references, rather than tutorials. While the reference books are essential for an intermediate to advanced user, a good tutorial-based book is much better for the novice student. In that regard, this book is perfect.
Lastly, the text printed on the pages is larger than you'll find in other books, but it's essential to how you will work with this book. You'll be looking back-and-forth between the book and the computer monitor, and the larger text will help you easily find where you last left the page.
Unix Truly Made Easy.......2005-11-18
Being an absolute novice at UNIX/Linux I can work my way around vi, the directory system, permissions, basic utilities, shell programming and be comfortable discussing issues in the office with the Unix staff after using this book. After reading some of the other reviews it became evident that these people were looking for a reference book, well this isn't that book and the "About This Book" clearly states this, "If you are looking for a quick reference text, put this book back on the shelf." And to the people that felt that you were not able to learn from this book, you probably did not do all the exercises in the book. This book is not organized as a reference book, it is a text book. I for one benefited greatly from this book and higly recommend it to anyone that is intent on learning the UNIX/Linux system.
A Teacher's Experience.......2004-09-03
I have been teaching with this book for many years, over 700 students. Class evaluations always rate the book very highly with comments about how clear explanations are. Students learn so much doing the exercises that class discussions are at a much higher level. We use this text in classroom and internet distance learning with great success. The few students over the years who had trouble in the class were trying to avoid doing the work by just looking up answers. That approach isnot effective because the book is built skill upon skill. Students must start at the beginning and actually do the work at the terminal. At first a few students tried to just read it. That approach did not work either. Now I make it very clear that the book is a detailed, hands-on, guide coupled with exact explanations. It must be worked through carefully, at the terminal. When students are willing to put in the effort and do that, they are well rewarded with knowledge and the ability to really do UNIX. I suspect the two reviewers who found the book difficult were not using it properly. My students love it.
This should be titled Unix Made Difficult.......2004-08-06
I used this book for a Unix class in my local community college. This is the worst text book ever written, I got lost many times. It was difficult to find related text and difficult to keep pace throughout the course. I am a seasoned Linux user and Linux certified, but I recieved no help through this book. If you want to learn Linux, I would reccommend any book by Michael Jang. He writes in an easy and detailed manner. John Muster may teach Unix, but he is a terrible author, go back to english prep John or take a lesson from Michael Jang.

The best book for seniors and newbies to computers!.......2007-03-08
After having purchased a couple of books to help senior citizens understand their computers I found this one the easiest to understand. It's not filled with computer lingo and if followed step by step it will lead anyone into complete understanding of how to do the basics with a computer. I highly recommend this for both senior citizens and newbies just purchasing a computer.
The best and most "reader friendly" how-to book to date........2000-04-06
Rebecca Colmer's The Senior's Guide To Easy Computing is specifically written for readers over the age of 50 who are uncomfortable and inexperienced with computers, intimatiated by computer techno-babble, and lack the confidence and skills necessary to take advantage of what their computer can offer them by way of information, entertainment, and life enriching resources. Colmer begins with the very basic information of what a personal computer is, what software is, modems, booting up, what the Internet and the Web are, what a browser is, how email works, attaching a file to email, and gives the reader clear, concise, practical answers to hundreds of other computer related questions. The Senior's Guide To Easy Computing is further enhanced for the older reader with a large print text for easier reading. The Senior's Guide To Easy Computing is quite emphatically the best and most "reader friendly" how-to introduction and guide to operating a computer for seniors published to date.
Very Helpful.......1999-11-03
I really was hesitant to get a computer because I was afraid I could not learn to use it. This book really helped me get started and over the fear hurdle.
A trully helpful guide for first time computer users!.......1999-10-26
A friend recommended this book, The Senior's Guide to Easy Computing, for my 80 year old mother who loves computers. I reviewed it and found it to be the perfect Christmas gift for her. It is very easy to read and it includes all of the basic techno jargon that she needs to remember when using her computer. It's a definite buy!
By the way, I also learned one or two things from reading it... and I consider myself computer literate!

essentially an illustrated guide.......2005-09-01
Naturally, the computer in the title is one running a Microsoft operating system, like MS Windows XP. Miller writes for someone who perhaps has never used any computer before. So pragmatically, he concentrates on the Microsoft machines. Not even a mention of the Macintosh. :(
The presentation of material is very vivid. Pages are brightly coloured with screen captures. And with pertinent portions of the windows clearly highlighted. Nor is there much textual material on the pages. Essentially, Miller has made an illustrated guide to computer usage.
Not just of the software. The book carefully starts off with step by step explanations of the various common hardware parts. With photos showing explicitly how to plug your machine together. Miller is taking nothing for granted here about the user's background. Don't laugh. Even the starting steps of where do I plug the keyboard cable into? And the mouse cable? Sure, it's simple once you've done it. But there are still many people to whom all this is new. Miller writes for them.

Good place to Start!.......2006-03-23
The "in easy steps" series are usually good introduction books and this one is no exception. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn the basics of Excel VBA Programming. Just as the title indicates, this book will guide you through the learning process one easy step at a time. The code examples are easy to understand and many are practical enough to use in the real world (I used some of the code to complete a job assignment and my boss was very pleased with the end result). As a result of applying the lessons in this book, I've purchased more advanced books on the subject and have decided to enroll in several programming courses next semester. Great place to start!
Good place to start.......2005-09-09
This book is a good starting place for somebody wanting to begin learning VBA. It gives enough detail to be useful, but not very deep. Many of the tutorial books expect a certain level of knowledge, this volume could be considered the "first 50 pages" of those other books. Not for the experienced VBA programmer.
