Customer Reviews:
Same poor print quality on the original and replacement books I ordered!.......2006-05-22
Can't comment on the content because both the first and second copies I received were not legible. What happened at the printer's? No quality control check, apparently, before these books were shipped for sale.
Poor content, poor print quality . How'd this ever get published?.......2005-12-11
This book was useless to me, and also maddening because it purported to address issues with quality of content. I should have read the other reviews here and then steered clear of this book. The content is anemic: nothing of substance here. And the publication looks like someone took it to a copy shop and made a copy of a copy.
This book simply does not offer useful information or -- by virtue of content and presentation -- 'walk the talk' of the importance of quality content.
Incredibly bad printing quality.......2005-09-07
This author is highly recommended, but the printing quality is worse than from an extremely poor fax machine. I really don't care about the quality of the content as trying to read it would be unbearable. It is going back immediately.
First 30 pages are all you really need........2003-11-01
I'm a huge fan of McGovern, but this book isn't worth the money. You can actually read the first section of the book - the part I really loved - at his web site for free: www.gerrymcgovern.com. The "sample web style guide" at the end of the book is woefully underwritten. Buy CONTENT CRITICAL instead.
Almost Criminal.......2003-05-03
This book is next to useless as a web style guide. Of the 224 pages only the first 35 pages are devoted to the topic of style. The rest of the book is a glossary of terms with little practical use. Most of the material presented in this book is available on the web for free and in greater detail.
My first glance through the book was a disappointment. Two days later I gave it a second chance but it confirmed my first impression so I sent it back.

Not as good as I'd hoped.......2006-03-22
This is a very dry read. Given the Web's visual elements, it's surprising there weren't illustrations to demonstrate what the author is talking about.
If you've got even a modicum of media-writing experience, this book is pointless. It'll probably sit on my bookshelf as a reference.
Guide to Writing and not much else........2006-03-19
I had to get this book for a graduate class I am taking and overall I felt it didn't offer anything new in the world of writing.
It's basically a news writing book but few differences are mentioned in regards to writing for Web pages. There isn't anything in it about how to program the site or lay it out, it's all style.
It isn't much help when you've already read numerous news writing books and taken news writing classes, but for a beginner it might work well.
A "must-have" for Web-writers!!.......2002-05-23
I am just learning about how to write on the Web. I found this book to be a great reference source with its 24 checklists, worksheets and forms. The Quick-Start Section gave me a good idea of what online writing is all about. The book is easy to understand and provides good detail on all types of writing for the Web.

The short essays included in Spider, Spin Me a Web were culled from Lawrence Block's long-running monthly column about fiction writing for Writer's Digest magazine. Block, an incredibly prolific mystery writer with more than 50 books to his name (at one point he was writing more than a book a month!), employs a funny, conversational tone in addressing issues of technique, career strategy, and living the fictioneer's life. He uses the analogy of the fiction writer as web spinner to hold the many threads of his book together. "The writer of fiction," he says, "is a spider. Drawing upon his inner resources and shaping them with his craft, he spins out his guts to trap his dinner." Block strikes a realistic balance between writing for oneself ("write what you yourself would most identify with, write honestly and unsparingly and fearlessly") and writing with readers in mind ("I try," he quotes his colleague Elmore Leonard as saying, "to leave out the parts people skip"). Though Block's success has been mainly as a writer of mysteries, his wisdom applies to all fiction writing; in fact, he is suspicious of the whole concept of genre writing. "For all that their guidelines attempt to codify their requirements," he confides, "I have heard no end of editors say that the manuscript they most hope to find on their desks is the one that breaks all their own unbreakable rules--but that grabs them so hard and moves them so much that they have to buy it anyway."
Book Description
The craft of writing is a lot like spinning a web: You take threads and weave them skillfully together, and only you know where this intricate network of twists and turns begin and how it will end. Now, with Lawrence Bloock's expert advice, you can learn this art of entrapping your reader in a maze of facinating fiction.
Spider, Spin Me a Web is the perfect companion volume to Block's previous book on writing,
Telling Lies for Fun and Profit, which Sue Grafton noted "should be a permanent part of every writer's library." As helpful and supportive as always, Block shares what he's learned over the course of writing over one hundred published books: techniques to help you to write a solid piece of fiction; strategies for getting a reader (or editor) to reaad—and buy—your book; ideas for increasing your creativity and developing an environment that will nourish you and your craft.
Spider, Spin Me a Web is a complete guide to achieving your full potential as awriter.
Customer Reviews:
Very supportive of new writers.......2007-09-05
I absolutely adore this book and it has a special place in my heart; mainly because I found it in the street, battered and face down, in front of my house only days after I flushed out the story line for my very first book. Providence is alive and well!
Although Lawrence Block's literary subject matters falls outside my area of interest, I found the content of his book to touch upon most if not all the of the areas I had questions about. Relating some of the experiences he has had with writing has made me feel more relaxed and at ease with my own.
Great writer, sloppy effort.......2007-03-02
I'm a huge fan of Lawrence Block as a novelist. Well, as a short story writer as well come to think of it, but I can't really say that he has a gift for writing about writing.
First of all, this isn't really a "book" per say. It's a collection of essays taken from various issues of WD (Writers Digest) and thrown into chronological order. Because of these much of the book feels lacks flow. The articles are all but three pages long and only cover the bare minimum requirements for talking about their topic.
Yes it is conversational and that's a plus, but there are plenty other books on writing which have a similar style and say MUCH MUCH more. The main problem with Blocks book is that he throws one useful tidbit out there and surrounds it with two and a half pages of fluff.
For great books on writing - books that feel like the writer is speaking directly to you - pick up Stephen King's "On Writing" Anne Lamott's "Bird by Bird" or Noah Lukeman's wonderful but virtually unknown "The first five Pages: a writers guide to staying out of the rejection pile. These have been my favorites so far, and I've read quite a few.
Let Block get back to the fiction, (I read Everybody Dies awhile ago and it was amazing.) He's great at storytelling, just not so great at teaching it, at least not in this too-brief format.
How To Writers Book.......2003-07-21
This book was written by one of the most prolific writers of our age-Lawrence Block. While I haven't read many of his fiction books, I have read a few of his 'how-to write' books.
He does have a conversational tone in his 'how to write' books, so you have to plow through a lot of verbage to get to the good points. I think that was basically to flesh out the book to bring it up to 250 pages.
If you can read fast and get through the extra verbage, this book does have some very good points to keep in mind when writing a book of Fiction, which if you use, would make your own story more interesting.
The first line, says it all.......2001-09-20
Those who can, write. Those who cannot, write about writing. That is the first line in the book. I think Block is an excellent fiction writer. Enough said.
Excellent resource for writers.......2000-05-26
Along with Block's _Telling Lies for Fun and Profit_, this is a book I've found indispensable over the years. It's not only tremendously helpful and encouraging for me as a writer, but it's also, like all of Block's work, sheer fun to read. Block's writing on writing is particularly engaging because he gives the impression of addressing a friend and colleague, offering the benefit of his experience for what it's worth, without talking down to his audience or intimidating with a judgmental list of must-dos and must-nots (like some tyrannical authors of books on writing). Block never condescends, and he always acknowledges that writers work in different ways (sometimes, in fact, different books work in different ways), so that the would-be writer feels free to take away only what works for him or her, without obligation to learn to write The Block Way.
While I find _Telling Lies_ even more helpful during the writing process, _Spider_ offers a fuller menu for the writer: not only does Block address specific tools of writing like foreshadowing, mining life experiences, and background information, but he also tackles some bigger issues about writing routines, marketing one's work, what to expect from editors, and the best ways to become successful. He also gives solid practical advice on more "advanced" writing issues for those who have established themselves and may be facing specific dilemmas regarding ghostwriting, living on a writer's income, and other realities of the writing life (not forgetting the harshest reality: rejection). And for those in a philosophical mood, he looks at the writer's mindset: how to set a writing goal, how to achieve it, and even how to determine what kind of writer you are.
Altogether, _Spider_ is a refreshing combination of down-to-earth conversation about the nuts and bolts side of writing and serious thoughts on the more elusive questions liable to bedevil the writer. It's a great resource whether you need a pep talk to get started, find yourself bogged down during your writing, or just want to get the perspective of a lively mind on the whole writing life. I advise every fiction writer to keep a copy on her desk.

content good but controversial subjects should be avoided.......1998-05-14
This book contains valuable information about the research process. Particularly helpful are the sections on citing electronic documents and organizing research information. However, this information was marred somewhat by the controversial subject matter chosen for the example research paper. Whatever the author's stance on affirmative action, this book should not be used as a platform for it. A more neutral subject would not detract from the information covered in the text.
Great book, especially for documenting sources........1998-02-21
This is an excellent book for doing research using the world wide web! While many of its tips are documented elsewhere, the dicussion on how to document sources in a bibliography when the source is a web page is great! This is uncharted territory and few other books, if any, cover this subject. Many universities are sticklers about what style to use in bibliographies and this documents both MLA and APA styles. It also notes that the way the book shows how to do it is not yet an "official" standard from MLA or APA. However, the recommended style is close enough to both to be usable.

Customer Reviews:
Selling Your Writing On- Line.......2006-02-01
Writer's Market On- Line Guide is an extensive resource for writers and one can easily become overwhelmed with such an exhaustive guide like this. It's mostly reference tools, with the bulk of the book dedicated to information from actual publishers, agents, and magazines. Only the first few sections, before the publishers, contain actual reading material. But it's all arranged very nicely and it includes very helpful facts for the aspiring author.
I like the sample form letters in the Query Letter Clinic. It's one thing to explain what works and what doesn't, but it's even more helpful to be able to visualize actual letters that are "good" and "bad". The contributors of this guide explain exactly what publishers look for when they review a manuscript and they give tips on common mistakes to avoid.
I spent most of my time thumbing through the publisher's reference section of this book. I was surprised at the number of publications, particularly magazines, that devote a substantial portion of their publication to freelance writers. With each listing, Writer's Guide shows the percentage of the magazine that is comprised of freelance writing, so that you can gauge your odds of getting published. Some are high, others are low. For example, Motor Trend Magazine contains only 5 to 10% freelance- written material, but the payoff for a published article can be as high as several hundred dollars. Entrepreneur Magazine, on the other hand, includes 60 percent freelance material. The payout is slightly less, but the higher level of freelance writing means that your individual odds of getting published are greater.
Writer's Guide includes a few postcards that can be removed to buy more products (like a magazine subscription to Writer's Digest), to send for free material from the Writer's Digest School, and to buy more Writer's Guides, like the Children's Writers Guide, The Literary Agent Guide, Novel and Short Story Writer's Market Guide, and a few others. There are countless listings of resources to access, including online and others.
One thing to note about this guide is that the title is a little misleading. While it does contain information on getting published by utilizing the internet, this is really only a small fraction of the guide. It actually contains information on all sorts of ways to get published, including phone and fax numbers to contact publishers directly.
Overall, this is a very good guide to writing and getting published. A little bit more personal reading would have been nice (there are only about 90 pages of actual reading material) but the reference sections are invaluable to the aspiring writer. If you have ever considered selling your personal writing, then you will find this guide very helpful. It's a heap of writing information, right at your fingertips.
Duplication of the 2003 Writer's Market book.......2003-06-12
I recently ordered Writer's Digest Market Online and am very disappointed with my order, if not downright angry. When I received it, I was dismayed to find out that this "Market Online" book is indeed the same thing, or very similiar, to the 2003 Writer's Market book. I ordered this with the belief that this book would offer online markets (websites) to sell articles to. Instead, it lists magazines and book publishers - the very same thing as the original 2003 Writer's Market! I feel that this book is a duplication of the first and cannot return my book now because I opened it and consider it a waste of money.
Don't waste your money!.......2003-05-29
[$$$] book offering great online access BUT you have to scrape off a number (like a lottery ticket) to access your code and mine got all mangled (not like a lottery ticket) - and Writer's Market just ignored me when I contacted them. That's fraud! I wasted [$$$] for nothing!
Your career starts here.......2002-08-24
There are few events in life that I look forward to more than receiving my shiny new Writer's Market each year. Once again, the good people at Writer's Digest Books have outdone themselves. This exhaustively researched book contains more than 8,000 places to sell your work-- what more could you ask for? Oh! How about pricing guidelines, expert advice, info about agents, writing contests, syndicates, organizations for writers...
I mean it most earnestly when I tell you I wouldn't have a career without this book. And ever since I got the online version, I'm not sure how I lived without it. I use it every day to keep track of my submissions. It even tells me when it's time to follow up on a query, and allows me to record notes about different markets-- I can punch in my deadlines, payment info, contact names, etc.
Of all the books in the world, this is the only one that I can say with full confidence is an absolute necessity to those who want to make a career of their writing. The price is meager compared to its benefits. No matter what you write, you'll find markets for it here.
--Jenna Glatzer, Editor-in-Chief, AbsoluteWrite.com
Essential resource.......2002-07-05
A must-have for working and aspiring writers alike. Beginners will find the articles helpful, working pros need the listings.
FYI: The listings makes side-by-side comparisons practically impossible, so I recommend inputting the information on your computer, then formatting it as a table. Pricing guidelines are sometimes inconsistent (average pay is listed as above-average and vice versa) and some small sections look as if they went directly to press without proofreading. Online updates more than compensate for such minor considerations.

Dissapointing.......1999-07-28
If you've been too long surfing the Internet, the Handbook seems obvious. There's nothing for the intermediate or advanced Net user.
Well-written but out-of-date and not worth the money.......1998-03-18
Though well-written and thorough, I found many links and/or suggestions to be out of date already. Provides good advice about mailing lists, but I think there are better books at a much lower price out there.

Book Description
T8784-5, 0-205-28784-0, Sammons, Martha C. (Wright State University), THE INTERNET WRITER'S HANDBOOK, 5.5 x 8.5, paperbound, 224 pp., $22.00 K, HA02 * /
The Internet Writer's Handbook is an easily accessible, vital reference tool in the age of electronic communication: it teaches how to write well on-line. Too often, writers attempt to create Web pages by simply using the same techniques they use for print documents; The Internet Writer's Handbook offers those writers specific advice on writing and designing on-line hypertext documents. In addition to entries on HTML elements, researching on the Internet, e-mail style, and other such contemporary topics, the Handbook places unique emphasis on online writing techniques.
KEY FEATURES: The book includes up-to-the-minute research on online help, hypertext, Web page design, concise writing techniques, usability testing, interface design, and Web sites. Reflecting the author's extensive experience as a consultant in business and technical writing, this handbook will appeal to anyone who needs help in creating a Web page.
This book is useful for any technical, business, or professional writing for the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
outdated and redundant information.......2004-01-01
The: Web Page Design, Web Page Elements and Navigation sections are *outdated*. This book was created in 1999 and there has been many advancements and corrections in this field.
The: Web Page Style, Editing and Web Page Writing Techniques sections could be great for beginner writers but for those who thought they would get a whole bunch of nuggets about writing for the web, will be sadly disappointed. At minimum, half a handful of nuggets can be gotten while sifting through the outdated and redundant information.
The: Types of Web Writing section was probably *most useful* to me and I wasn't really wanting information about that in the first place.
The book is also hard-to-read, even though it attempts at making it easy-to-read. Everything is sort of "clumped" together with too many icons, too much in the legend and not enough "white space" to follow the information coherently.
In 1999, I could see this book being a major hit... combining web page design and writing skills but the heavy price tag of the book today isn't merited.
If you get it, skip the stuff about web design. Better yet, pick up a copy at your local library to see what I'm talking about and then make your decision from there.
In my opinion, this isn't a book to keep in your private library collection!
A Somewhat Useful Book for Beginning Writers.......2001-04-22
The Internet Writer's Handbook is just that--a handbook. As such, it's not something you'll be reading or spending much time with. But that's a good thing, because this rather expensive book is very cheaply made and violates every rule of page layout its author attempts to teach. Pages are so busy and painful to look at that I'm rarely tempted to pick it up. The information is sound but basic. Much of it is typical freshman comp handbook stuff in Web-style disguise. The high price of this book makes even its good points sting a little. Bottom line: If I could have seen The Internet Writer's Handbook before I bought it, I wouldn't have considered it--especially at [the price] plus shipping.
No sifting required: Chock full of gold nuggets of knowledge.......2000-04-15
This is an AWESOME book! Very well organized. It can be read word-for-word cover-to-cover OR reviewed quickly for the major points! The information is very accessible because of the presentation: lots of bulleted lists, short paragraphs, and special tips. Also, excellent examples (of both stellar and regretable writing) are given throughout the book. This book is a success due to the excellent oranization and presentation, AND the broad scope of information offered (e.g., three chapters on different aspects of writing for the Web, a chapter on editing Web sites, chapters on Web page design and navigation, and more)!
As a novice in the subject of writing for the Web, I've found this an excellent "How to" book. I'm an editor of trade books and other publications, but am learning about writing for the Web. So far, this has been the most helpful book because of the accessibility of the information (not buried in long, narrative chapters).
Another recommendation: I recommend "Writing for New Media" (1998). In "Writing for New Media," authors Bonime and Pohlmann discuss writing for interactive media, which includes interactive thinking, interactive writing (instead of linear writing), and aspects of interactive storytelling.
Great combination of web style guidelines and writing style.......2000-02-20
I've read many books regarding web design and writing for online media. This book combines some knowledge you'd get from The Chicago Manual of Style, with some of the web info you'd get from The Yale Web Style Guide. Great mix of both subjects, in a a format that makes for easy reading. You need this book if you're web mastering and writing the content for your site.
