Book Description
First published in 1925, Willis Linn Jepson's Manual of the Flowering Plants of California has been a standard reference for teachers, students, and naturalists. Since that time, hundreds of new species have been identified and botanical investigation has become more sophisticated. Now Jepson's philosophy of making such information available to all is again realized in this new volume, which includes a wealth of material accumulated over the past decades.
With contributions from two hundred botanists across North America, this is the most comprehensive resource and identification guide to nearly eight thousand varieties of native and naturalized California plants. The means to identify plants (using key traits and illustrations) is accompanied by special information such as horticultural requirements, endangerment, toxicity, weed status, and notes on the management of sensitive species. Identification keys have been designed for ease of use, and terms have been simplified and illustrated, making the new Manual the most authoritative field guide for the expert and amateur alike.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Technical Review of California Plants.......2003-03-06
There is no easy way to identify a plant to species, but if it is in California it is far easier to use this volume than the others. Although it was written in 1925, the line drawings are for me priceless. Be advised that names change in 75 years even if plants do not, you will need a modern flora to reference the old name. HIGHLY recommended, but technical.
Good Reference and Learning Guide.......2002-04-29
This is an excellent guide. Very comprehensive, however you must have formal education in botany and plant ID in order to effectively use the guide to key plants to genus and or species. Not recommended for the average person. Just people who are plant nerds!
Not for the uninitiated.......2001-01-13
This book is an excellent botanical key listing a huge number of plants. It is not your average "audubon" guide, since it requires you to key out the plant in question using botanical systematics. Definitely a good reference book, but hard to use casually to find out what that tree is in your front yard!
Excellent, but not for beginners.......2000-07-15
This is an excellent book covering thousands of species of flowering plants of California. The book does contain a brief introduction to keying plants and a glossary of plant terms, but despite these features, I believe that the beginner would find this book difficult to use. It's size and complexity can be intimidating, and without color pictures (which aren't always accurate, but helpful for the beginner) it can be a frustrating experience for the novice.
from what i've seen of this book i would like to buy one........1998-11-11
I really haven't had a chance to read this book, but what I've seen so far it is very informative. I work for USDA FOREST SERVICE and this book is here at work. The problem is I would like to have one of my own, so I'm now in the process of looking for it at our book store in town. If they do not have it, possibly they could order it for me. If not I will travel to the next larger town to accomplish my mission. I will get this book one way or another.

A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing)
ASIN: 0226823377 |
Book Description
Dewey. Bellow. Strauss. Friedman. The University of Chicago has been the home of some of the most important thinkers of the modern age. But perhaps no name has been spoken with more respect than Turabian. The dissertation secretary at Chicago for decades, Kate Turabian literally wrote the book on the successful completion and submission of the student paper. Her Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, created from her years of experience with research projects across all fields, has sold more than seven million copies since it was first published in 1937.
Now, with this seventh edition, Turabian’s Manual has undergone its most extensive revision, ensuring that it will remain the most valuable handbook for writers at every level—from first-year undergraduates, to dissertation writers apprehensively submitting final manuscripts, to senior scholars who may be old hands at research and writing but less familiar with new media citation styles. Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams, and the late Wayne C. Booth—the gifted team behind The Craft of Research—and the University of Chicago Press Editorial Staff combined their wide-ranging expertise to remake this classic resource. They preserve Turabian’s clear and practical advice while fully embracing the new modes of research, writing, and source citation brought about by the age of the Internet.
Booth, Colomb, and Williams significantly expand the scope of previous editions by creating a guide, generous in length and tone, to the art of research and writing. Growing out of the authors’ best-selling Craft of Research, this new section provides students with an overview of every step of the research and writing process, from formulating the right questions to reading critically to building arguments and revising drafts. This leads naturally to the second part of the Manual for Writers, which offers an authoritative overview of citation practices in scholarly writing, as well as detailed information on the two main citation styles (“notes-bibliography” and “author-date”). This section has been fully revised to reflect the recommendations of the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and to present an expanded array of source types and updated examples, including guidance on citing electronic sources.
The final section of the book treats issues of style—the details that go into making a strong paper. Here writers will find advice on a wide range of topics, including punctuation, table formatting, and use of quotations. The appendix draws together everything writers need to know about formatting research papers, theses, and dissertations and preparing them for submission. This material has been thoroughly vetted by dissertation officials at colleges and universities across the country.
This seventh edition of Turabian’s Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations is a classic reference revised for a new age. It is tailored to a new generation of writers using tools its original author could not have imagined—while retaining the clarity and authority that generations of scholars have come to associate with the name Turabian.
Customer Reviews:
just what i needed.......2007-09-09
delivery was faster than expected; book arrived in pristine condition. would definitely use seller in future.
Chip off of the old block........2007-08-24
This edition of Turabian follows in a long line of excellent editions of the manual. It is very well put together and some improvements have been made including some much needed updating to abbreviations and some other matters. An excellent tool that is an absolutely essential addition to any busy student's library.
A Manual for Writers.......2007-07-29
Each major research paper must have a good introduction, hypothesis,
discussion. conclusion and provable claims. Simple questions
must be answered. i.e.
- What are the relevant questions to ask?
- What do we do?
- What direction will we select?
A good research work has practical answers, a workable hypothesis,
reasoning and evidence which supports the overall presentation.
i.e. numbers, facts, quotes and authorities
A thorough bibliography of reasonably recent sources should be
presented. This book succeeds in providing the reader with the
important requisites to doing expert research.
Nerds of the world, rejoice!.......2007-05-29
I have owned the Sixth Edition of Turabian for about five years and it has been used to the point of disintegration. I was excited about the new edition and when I received it I was elated to find that the Chicago Style Manual was included with the writer's manual. The editors have updated the manual to include citation of electronic sources which, if you have been doing any academic writing recently, has been a matter of preference. The two-color priniting makes section headings easier to find as you are leafing through the pages. The editors have included a bibliography divided into various disciplines that provides some suggestions for further research. Overall, I am enjoying using the new manual. The biggest downside is that I am having to relearn the section headings that I have grown familiar with over the past five years. Small price to pay for the added advantage of having the Chicago Style Manual at my fingertips.
Nerds, do yourselves a favor and update your Turabian manual. You won't be sorry.
The Required Standard.......2007-05-15
Turabian's book provides the standard required by the instituion at which I am working toward my master's.
It is thorough, complete and necessary.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Generally Good Information.......2004-05-19
As an owner of the second and third editions, I found the second edition's physical qualities (paper, printing quality, etc.) to be better than the third edition's. Mr. Messina is mistaken when he indicates that my previous review was based on the second edition. I had ordered (through Amazon) the book on a waiting list and got it shortly after it was published. It is sitting next to me as I type. The second edition is in my office.
Pump Handbook, 3rd Edition review.......2002-09-26
I can't confess as having read the whole book as it is very extensive, but from what I've read so far I can provide the following review.
As an EPC Engineer with vessels/exchanger experience, I don't have much experience with centrifugal pumps. Therefore I bought the 3rd Edition of the Pump Handbook to quickly learn more about all kinds of pumps and bone up on pump basics. This book meets all my expectation for technical content to learn about pumps. The book provides detail explanation about all kinds of pumps, their parts, and provides disadvantage/advantage of each type. It even goes in detail on impeller design calculations.
Sadly, this 3rd Edition is diminished by poor graphics. About 50% of the pictures and graphs are blurry and not printed too clear or focused. Maybe the 2nd Edition might be better in this respect. Otherwise, this is a MUST HAVE book for any Engineer or pump user to have.
Pump Handbook.......2001-03-12
Handbook is a term which implies comprehensive coverage of a given subject, so often a term which is misapplied. Not so in this case however, this book is without a doubt one of the best sources of information on pumps and related system components currently in print. For anyone requiring a comprehensive pump resource, this is it. I would definitely recommend this one for the engineering library.
Description corrections.......2000-12-28
I am one of the four editors of this handbook. Please note the correct number of pages is 1765. The 2nd edition has the 1280 pages presently described. After the name Charles Heald add that he is an editor also. The 2nd and 3rd reviewers are referring to the 2nd edition of the handbook as they are dated before the 3rd edition was printed.
Third Edition Builds on Success of First and Second.......2000-12-13
As an owner of the second edition, I looked forward to the revised update. The quality of the information is high. However, I was disappointed in the quality of the publication. Some of the graphs and charts seemed "muddy" with hard to read notations. Also, the binding and paper quality seemed to have slipped a little. This seems to be a trend. I own a number of texts from the 1950's. Their binding and paper quality is much better than that used today.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference book .......2007-09-27
My husband just graduated and starting new job - he wanted this for reference book. Book in great condition and shipped in a timely manner.
Good manual not for beginners, but it could help..........2007-09-24
Good manual not for beginners, but it could help for some. Very thorough and planned out.
Best poket elec book i've used.......2007-01-01
To much information to even start. It has many, many tables, charts, examples, general information, math, trigonometry, NEC exception references and of course stuff like derating factors, conduit fill, device fill, electrode conductor size ohms law, Henry's law, Kirchoff's law on and on and on.
Let's put it this way, it takes up less space than the NEC and has almost the same amount of info that is not normally used (conduit fill and conductor properties for example).
A must for Electrical Mechanics.......2006-03-08
My husband had me purhase this for him for work. He is an Electrial Maintance Mechanic. He says this is a quick way to figure out problems at work. A must have.
Great for all levels of Electrical expertise..........2005-12-10
Unless you "Know it all" and "can remember it all", this is
a very handy book. Eliminates a lot of guessing and over
engineering. Used this book for Years!

Customer Reviews:
manual of clinical microbiology, Vol 1 and 2.......2005-10-03
This is the gold star standard for practicing clinical microbiologists
ONE STEP BENEATH EXCELLENCE.......2002-08-03
At 1773 pages, the "Manual of Clinical Microbiology" is a good (medium size) reference for a clinical or diagnostic microbiologist. It offers detailed information on both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. Its authority is unquestionable. Pathologists, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and anybody whose business concerns infectious diseases will find the book useful.
The only setback is that it is awkwardly expensive. Many potential buyers would be enticed by cheaper alternatives: there are lots of them out there.
The classical Microbiology laboratrory text.......2001-11-26
This book is comprehensive, well put together and thorough in all of its aspects. It is an invaluable text in the microbiology department. I and my workplace have a copy, and it is the most often refered text in our laboratory only Bergeys and Mandell come close. All aspects including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, laboratory metheds etc etc are covered it is a one stop clinical microbiology text. I have no resevations in wholeheartedly recommending this book. The only thing I would add is that I would like to see it on CD-ROM
it is very good book.......2001-03-23
this is very good book , but u have to know the basic back ground of microbiology because , it give u the smallest detaile , and the unusuall things in microbiology, but it is the bible of clinical microbiology

T. Kennedy ADN nursing student.......2007-08-19
Hello, I recommend this book to anyone going into nursing. It has helped me and many of my colleagues in writing our care plans/care maps. It really helps to get you started by giving you different ideas to work with such as objective and subjective data, actions/interventions, desired outcomes/evaluations. I can't really say enough about this book and don't know what I'd do without it.
Excellent for students!.......2007-08-15
This is very helpful for formulating Nursing Dx and Interventions. I especially like the bookmark in back that lists all NANDA approved Dx(s).
Love it.......2007-05-22
I abolutely love this book. It is great for doing care plans, i had one from 2002 and it got pretty beat up. So i upgraded and it was great. I've used this book for care plans from regular general to maternity to pediatric. It is worth the money, but rationales are a bit short and some doesn't have a rationale, but i still love this book.i
Great Book.......2007-04-15
This is an awesome book. It helped me tremendously in nursing school. I had three other books that were uselees and much more expensive compair to this one.
Nursing Guide.......2007-03-25
This is an excellent guide to have if you are a student. I would highly recomend it!
Amazon.com
You can find bigger books about C, but you won't find one as authoritative or helpful as this reference manual. Harbison and Steele have now gone through four editions and are beginning to cover language differences which can surprise the experienced C coder moving to C++. As always, the authors do an excellent job of explaining what's standard and what it replaces. No hairy syntax has been omitted, so this volume can make wending one's way through obfuscated code, if not pleasant, at least less miserable. Whether you learned C from Kernighan or some massive tome, you'll want this volume as your day-to-day reference. And you won't mind buying a new edition once in a while, because you'll have worn the old one out by then.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on C99.......2007-09-03
Whilst I feel that K&R is a classic for C(89/90), it doesn't cover C99 at all. This is where Harbison takes over. It isn't quite in the same concise style. But it does serve well as both a clear description of the lanhuage and a reference.
The Best.......2007-06-19
This is the best reference on C out there. Yes, it is better than K&R, despite what others say. It is better organized, and has very concise examples on everything that may need explaining.
Simply Indespensible.......2007-06-01
Compiler writers know a language the best, and H & S are compiler guys.
This book is within reach every time I work with C. It treats you like an adult - you can find the terms "scope", "visibility", and "extent" in the index - and the better you are with language theory, the better the book gets.
I have taught C at in-house classes at work and I gave the students copies of H & S, telling them that giving them this book was the best thing I was going to do for them during the entire course.
Exactly what it was advertised.......2006-11-06
This book is an excellent reference for us C programmers who need a book on the shelf. It's not a learning book. I definitely recommend it.
All the hype and more!.......2006-03-29
This book deserves six stars. I will not attempt to better what folks have already written. What has been said thus far, and positive, is the truth.
My history:
I did the normal task of reading a giant book to get acquainted to the language, as required by school. In my spare time at the library I searched for a lighter book, of reference material type once I learned the language. I found their 3rd edition and was constantly rechecking it out of the library to the point I was annoyed and finally I looked for a newer edition. Like most C books that are produced in the late eighties/early ninety's I thought there wouldn't be a newer edition available - much to my surprise a newly minted fifth edition was available... had I only found it earlier!
The book is light and small enough that if you're like me, a traveling developer, the book is priceless. It's small and it packs a punch! Takes literally two seconds to look something up that's bugging you, and when you find it you purposely read more than required because it's abundant with great information.
Goes everywhere with me. Can't say enough about this book.
