Book Description
“In this updated and expanded edition of her excellent telecommunications primer, Lili explains in just the right detail everything you need to know to become fluent in this most important and fascinating industry. Besides including a satisfying amount of expert technical detail, the book also discusses equally crucial aspects of how communications technology affects society, culture, and politics. Electronic communications is changing the world for the better; learn from Lili’s expertise how you, too, can participate in the revolution.”
—Steve Riley, senior security strategist, Microsoft Corporation
“The book you hold in your hand is a rarity. In more than thirty years of teaching, administration, and research in telecommunications, I have never found a single book that could serve these diverse areas. The search is over. Telecommunications Essentials is best-of-breed in telecommunications publishing and represents the most thorough, comprehensive, and forward-looking resource to date. Both student and practitioner alike will find the unique blend of introductory and advanced material a ‘one-stop-shop.’ If it was a movie, this book would receive two thumbs up!”
—Dr. Art St. George, manager of advanced technologies, University of New Mexico
“Telecommunications Essentials should be on the shelf of every professional working in voice and data networking. It is the first place I go when I need to look up something that I am unsure of or when I encounter a new or unfamiliar term. I have been using Telecommunications Essentials now for two years as the course text for business technology students taking Introduction to Telecommunications. My course covers the entire book and the students end up with a practical knowledge base of the components, technologies, and connectivity that make today’s networks work. This new edition is most welcome since it includes new advances in the areas of fiber optics, wireless, Voice over IP, and broadband technologies that have emerged since the publication of the first edition. This new edition will replace my well-worn copy of my first edition of Telecommunications Essentials, which has served me well so far.”
—Robert Hudyma, professor of business, Ryerson University
“This is an excellent reference book on telecommunications. It’s up-to-date on the latest technology, it’s comprehensive, and most of all, it’s easy to read and understand. Lili has the rare ability to explain very complex subjects well. If you need a good reference book on telecommunications, I would start with this.”
—To Chee Eng, research director, communications, Gartner
“Lillian makes telecoms fun.”
—Ni Quiaque Lai, CFO, Hong Kong Broadband Network Ltd.
“Goleniewski’s Telecommunications Essentials sets the stage by discussing forward-looking applications that are made possible by advances in telecommunications technology, including embedded devices, intelligent wearables, intelligent robot squads, and many others. This initial discussion is quite motivating for students and makes them eager to learn about various networking technologies, which are covered quite well in the rest of the book. The first edition (published in 2003) was already a great book for teaching telecommunications essentials, and it is clear that the second edition brings us up to the present and is a remarkable treatment of the topic.”
—Dr. Lundy Lewis, chair of the Department of Information Technology, Southern New Hampshire University
“The book covers not just the fundamentals of telecommunications, but it easily guides the readers through the wide variety of technical details of next-generation network services, converged network architectures, and technologies. Lillian’s elegant and clear style of presentation makes the book an excellent reference for system developers as well as telecommunications system designers to understand the current and emerging technologies that support business applications.”
—Dr. Tibro Gyires, professor, Illinois State University, School of Information Technology
“When Lili published her first edition of Telecommunications Essentials, I was a consultant in the communications field. Her guide was the only one I used to keep current. Now I’m in different field altogether but I need to understand this highly extensive field. Telecommunications Essentials is comprehensive, user-friendly, insightful, and fun. It’s the only resource to have if you want to know telecom.”
—Dave Feldman, consul, trade and investment, British Embassy
“After four decades of working in the computer and telecommunications fields, and more than twenty years of teaching graduate-level courses in telecommunications and network management at four universities, I finally have a book that meets the needs of students who are working to gain an in-depth and comprehensive grasp of an ever-changing field. Lili Goleniewski wrote that book. Her second edition is an outstanding contribution to the field and will be the best teaching aid I have ever had. If you teach you should use this book. If you want to really learn about telecommunications and data networks you should insist that your school adopt the book as a text.”
—Michael Erbschloe, consultant, author, and educator
“Telecommunications is not just about the legacy telephone network or the evolving wireless networks or the rapidly expanding Internet. It is about all of these and much more. It requires years of expertise in this fascinating field, combined with skillful writing ability, to develop a book that presents in an interesting and insightful manner the multifaceted disciplines of telecommunications. Lillian Goleniewski has accomplished this immense task with great skill in her book Telecommunications Essentials. Beginning students and professionals alike will benefit from this book. It can serve as an excellent reference book for telecommunications executives and business professionals who need to understand the basics of telecommunications and the workings of next-generation networks. Congratulations to the author on a task well done!”
—Dr. Seshadri Mohan, chair and professor, Systems Engineering Department, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
“Telecommunications Essentials is a brilliant book for a broad and in-depth picture of the nitty-gritty aspects of telecommunications. Lili has a way of explaining complicated topics very well. It is a must-have book for any person who works in the IT world.”
—Lino Alberts, department manager technology operations, RBTT Bank Aruba N.V.
“A truly amazing book. A ‘must-have’ for anyone who wants to know the basics of telecommunication, how it works, and where the industry is heading. This book is excellent for all audiences—from novice to expert. Lili has successfully broken down the complexity of telecommunication so it can be easily understood.”
—Mohd Radzi b. Mohd Yusoff, senior manager, MSC Technology Centre, Sdn Bhd, Malaysia
“Telecommication Essentials describes the most technical elements of the subject in layperson’s terms, while remaining engaging for those with greater understanding. In providing the link between the most complex of telecommunications technology and its most simple applications, both now and in the future, Telecommunication Essentials is the most readable book on the subject both for newcomers and for ‘old hands.’ Lili exudes enthusiasm throughout, providing a vision for the future that draws the reader in.”
—Neil Juggins, head of research, Evolution Securities China
“One of the great challenges facing those responsible for setting public policy or regulation associated with the converging technologies of telecommunications, IT, and media is that before the ‘ink is dry’ on their pronouncements, advancements in the underlying science and technology has often made the ‘new’ policy, laws, and regulation out-of-date or irrelevant. While Lili does not claim to predict the future in her second edition of Telecommunications Essentials, she takes what is to many ‘Rocket Science’ and delivers it up in ways that those responsible for protecting the ‘public good’ and maintaining more competitive communications marketplaces can easily understand. Lili is one of the few telecommunications educators out there, catering to a diverse a reader base, who has been keeping up with Moore’s Law and what it really means in the real world of telecommunications. She continues to maintain her technological neutrality, never attempting to ‘sell’ a particular flavor-of-the-year with regard to who is the ‘best’ at delivering ‘what’ to ‘whom,’ nor falling into a mumbo-jumbo mantra of which national regulatory authority has invented the best-of-the-best new legal regime, something sorely needed by those needing a bias free technology primer.”
—Thom Ramsey, partner, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey (Brussels & Washington, D.C) and former Deputy United States Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy, U.S. Department of State
“As a journalist who writes about the Defense Department’s most complicated space programs, I need to have a very clear and current handle on the technology and the operational aspects of the equipment and platforms. I a...Customer Reviews:
As an electronic engineer and graduate student, I found the book to be very comprehensive in discussing various emerging and present telecommunication technologies. The book would describe quite accurately the technology without bogging you down with unnecessary details. It manages to be brief while still providing valuable data for the telecommunications professional, and broad enough to cover a wide spectrum (no pun intended) of material. And most importantly, it isn't a bore to read.
It is what it says it is.......2007-03-20
I recommend this to anyone seeking a basic to intermediate knowledge of a broad array of telecommunciations concepts and applications.I have to hand it to the authors, Lillian Goleniewski and Kitty Jarrett, for producing hands-down the most readable and comprehensive book out there on Telecom. I have had to slog through some of the worst writing to study this subject, and it was a breath of fresh air to crack this one open and start reading.
The Best and Most Readable Book on Telecom.......2007-03-16
The authors cover every aspect of the field in great depth, and in such clear language that both the expert and the novice can benefit from this book. This will be required reading for all of my students, and I highly recommend other professors in the Telecom field to follow suit.
Well done!Firstly, I am a strong fan of Ms. Lili. I have personally met the author during a 3-day seminar during my PETRONAS days back in 1994. At that time, I was attending what the best telecomm training course the market can offer as well worth its price.
Balanced explanation on telecomm technology and industry (business) trends.......2006-12-12
WHY WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND TELECOMM PROPERLY:
Compared to other training courses, Ms Lili was about 2x-3x times more expensive but what is that to an oil-and-gas company where network downtime to a gas-compressing subsidiary can cost around RM100,000 an hour (1994 exchange of RM2.50@US$1) equivalent to US$40,000.
At that time, IT Support has to figure out how to support a heterogeneous mix of one IBM 3745 mainframe, few UNIX boxes, tens of Novell 2.x servers. Several network protocols ran inside the various pipes/lines such as SNA, TCP-IP and MS Netbeui, and my pet project OS/2 NetBIOS, and Novell SPX. Most network segments are on Ethernet, and a couple are on Token-Ring.
Needless to say, troubleshooting network traffic particularly eliminating "jabbers chipping echoes etc" was to put it mildly a "challenge." One of the fire-fighting effort required bringing in a US consultant with a pony-tail using Data-General "Sniffer" equipment!
For IT Support to figure out how to support the big project at that time, mainly getting SAP gateways remaining up, we need to understand what it was we were having, as well as understand how the newer telecomm technologies are going to do to the overall picture.
At that time, we have the whole possible mix of telecomm devices such fixed leased lines, dial-up backup, and few sprinklings of VSAT and wireless. Of course you cannot learn all that in a 3-day class. And I don't think I learn that at school too. What I learned became obsolete after I graduated !
WHY WE NEED THIS BOOK:
This is where this book comes in. To provide good IT support, so that users would not pester Helpdesk folks, we need really good technical references. Of course, we need that initial mind-enlightening class to understand the "big-picture." The details you can get that free easily off the web nowadays; understand how the big picture works is will make it easier for us to understand the complex details.
WHAT THIS BOOK COVER:
Covered the whole range of Telecom technologies ranging from basic stuff such as circuits and channels to transmission type such as analog vs digital. The book then cover the traditional media such as twisted-pair, coax, fibre and telecomm devices such as microwave and satellite.
The depth of technical details amazes me to have everything in one book covering IP protocols, ports, and Quality of Service. Main trends are covered such as optical networking, broadband and wireless for both LAN, and WANs..
I really like Lily's supplementary notes on the various indicators on industry adaption of specific technologies as well as their technological history. Basically if you need to know something on Telecomms, there will be some pages on that topic here. .
COMPARED TO 1sT EDITION:
Compared to the 1st edition, this is thicker by a double! We have a whopping 865 pages, although still much less than Yellow Pages
In the 2nd edition, I realized the author has diligently tracked the technology updates which is what most people wanted.
WISH LIST FOR NEWER EDITION OR NEW BOOK ALTOGETHER:
Since I am now into management consulting for E-Government and E-Commerce, some discussion on cost structure for would be VERY ATTRACTIVE especially to decision-makers in developing countries with low phone/network penetration.
I believe if I am all powerful African president wanting to have my own mobile telecoms company, I would want to have a reference that will give some estimates on trenching cost, and base-station costs. That will surely help my nephew who is going to be the CEO of that company some idea of what sort of loan and spending that has to be incurred. Farfetched ? Well this is a wish-list!
TELECOMMS MUST BE A PART OF YOUR COMPANY IT STRATEGIC PLAN:
Overall for techies out there, recognizing important trends in the telco industry is VERY VERY important for your corporate management. Having a feel of where everybody is going is critical to their Telecommunications Infra roadmap. This is where this book come into value.
The Telecomms Infrastructure road map will determine what decisions are required for infrastructure procurement, leasing or investment. Thus, the Telecomm chapter is an important part of a company IT Strategic Plan (ISP).
Subsequently, this ISP will exist if senior management is really serious to get their brilliant and precious Business Strategic Plan up and running. Unless if the company is just SOHO with only 1-2 computers and they pass files using flash-disks! Otherwise the senior management is just talking.
The book does what it sets out to do - cover the basic underpinnings of modern telecom. Its' age (a scant three years) shows a bit here and there (some of the material obviously predating the book), but for the most part it is accurate and relevant. It is not a technical document, as 600 pages would not be enough to cover the component technology. It mentions occasionally the regulatory issues in telecom, but only in passing; its' primary focus is on business. It makes a good book for the student or someone interested in a telecom career. I might also recommend it to someone whose future plans include sitting through a telecom sales pitch or taking a meeting with telecom lobbyists (at least the part where they might drag in an engineer to talk about some cool new technology).
A Cost-effective Path to Basic Telecom Knowledge.......2006-08-11
When I say it has a business focus, I mean that it tries to explain the pros and cons of a particular technology in terms of cost, complexity, and ability to satisfy customer needs. Applying the same criteria, I would say the author has provided a moderately costly (that is, not free), easy to understand, and given the constraints of the business focus, does so rather well.
But the book has a few flaws. Here's what I found -
p.254 - "binary form" should read "dotted decimal form" - which the author uses correctly on the following page.
p.255 - no mention of NAT (Network Address Translation) as a means of saving IPv4 address space. Like the author, I'd like to see IPv6 deployed before I'm too old to care.
p.298 - the phrase "going forward" should be extirpated before the next edition. Also appears on p.312.
p.310 - the author briefly mentions an imminent "talent dearth" as driving the next wave of technical innovation, then trots out some ITAA blurb about half the job vacancies going unfilled each year. Of course, training might also help the problem, if global business can be bothered with such trifles.
p.340 - ANX was purchased by SAIC in 1999 I think, and its' URL as published has been deprecated. On the bright side, I did see a picture of a cute puppy when I went there.
p.354 - in discussing voice chat in games, author uses Sega Dreamcast as example. Only the good die young...
p.429 - author mentions Amsterdam. Sounds like reasonable grounds for a drug test to me! Of course, there's always the excuse of visiting the Van Gogh museum...
p.459 merits a special mention as both the best and worst way to sell a wireless future. Not only will the world be at your fingertips, but it will be trying to gnaw them off. While the author sees a benevolent infrastructure where knowledge of your whereabouts and tastes will be used to respond to your needs quickly and thoroughly, I see a world where your convenience comes at the price of empowering spammers, stalkers, and government goons.
Some of the parts I really enjoyed either because of their novelty or thoughtfulness were as follows:
p.274-6 - talking about the notion of backhauling data, the author touches on a problem analogous to Net Neutrality.
The Internet primer on p.259-80 was maybe the best I've read. Sadly it was too short.
Also enjoyed the circuit-switching chapters 4 and 5.
p.331 - author makes a case for tiered Internet. I'm hopeful we can keep "best effort" Internet service at a quality level sufficient for playing Battlefield 2 for the foreseeable future.
This book is better than three stars, but not quite four. Were its' material a little fresher, it would merit four. I'll check out the website and update this review accordingly.
The author is a great writer! This was an easy read and I'm glad it's in my personal library. Just what I needed to know about telecom and a nice addition to my other telecom books such as Taking Charge of your VoIP Project. That's another good one. Thank you Lillian! The first time tonight I haven't had to lament the plethora of bad writers and non-existent content editors!!
Great book, easy read for a tough subject.......2005-08-17

The telecommunications industry encompasses hundreds of different technologies, which in turn have spawned many trade names, jargon terms, and legal definitions. Those looking for a comprehensive introduction to the technologies, laws, and marketing programs that govern telecommunications need to read The Essential Guide to Telecommunications.Author Annabel Z. Dodd begins by pointing out that telecommunications technologies have everything to do with signals moving over media. She then goes on to catalog some of the various kinds of signals and media, covering traditional switched telephone service, dedicated lines, public branch exchanges (PBXs), and automatic call distributors (ACDs) along the way. After that foray into technology, she gets into the U.S. telecommunications business environment, focusing heavily on the federal breakup of AT&T in 1984 and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. She then explains additional technologies; data communications and the Internet-ISDN, Frame Relay, and analog modems all get attention. The author also pays plenty of attention to wireless solutions, including satellite communications.
Unlike Newton's Telecom Dictionary (which remains an excellent resource), this book can be successfully read from start to finish by a reader with practically no telecommunications knowledge at the outset. Read and understand--that's what good technical books, like this one, enable you to do. --David Wall
Customer Reviews:
This is the worst book I have ever had to read. There are no chapter sumaries. The logic flow within chapters seems random. Complicated terms or concepts are referenced but not explained until much later, sometimes in another chapter. Much of the information is wrong. In certain sections of the book, spaces have been omitted. Thisisveryhardtoread. This book confusses more than it clarifies. Run away, take another class. Don't buy this book
Horrible.......2007-08-20
This book may seem like a great intro book to those well-versed in Telecommunications. However, the book does a terrible job of explaining terms and jargon. A word, for example, will be used for several pages before being defined. There are very few practical examples and metaphors to illustrate concepts and add interest to the book. There are no photographs here either, only basic illustrations which do not clarify concepts, but instead require explaination.
Baaad to the Binding.......2006-10-23
All of my classmates are disgusted that we are required to use this text. Plans are being set for a post-semester Essential-Guide-to-Telecommunications bonfire! This third edition was basically written by mid-2001, in the shakeout of the dotcoms. In spite of the intervening period of almost 4 years, the book feels relatively up-to-date on the technical side although the recent mergers in the telecom industry might need to be addressed by the author.
Telecom with great industry overview.......2005-03-18
The book, as stated by the author, is intended to clarify technologies, trends, and history in the telecom industry. Although it provides an overview of tech, that is not is its strength; placing the terminology in the context of the structure and the history of the telecom industry is. The book is not meant for IT specialists but people like myself that need to know enough about hardware, protocols, and systems to ensure clear communication about the telecom needs of the enterprise.
Although the book is not as technical as some might like, I felt the author did a thorough job covering the structure of telecom industry and the impact of the regulatory environment, not just in the developed countries but the emerging markets of the global marketplace also. The international background, histories, mergers and aquisitions help provide a context.
Interestingly, Dodds foresaw the importance of VoIP internationally as well as the fixed wireless leap for emerging markets. Those topics remain on the front burner. All in all, this is great book to start with. It explains all the key technologies with adequate detail while exploring options for SMBs with significant trends placed in a historical and regulatory context. I recommend it for the "new kids on the block".I just finished reading this book and overall found it to be very informative. It covers a general overview of everything from the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to telecommunications around the world. Landline, wireless, and internet are all covered along with the technologies that make them work. With that being said, this book will NOT make you an expert in telephony or any specific area of telecommunications. It is however, a great start.
Good Intro/Overview of the Telecom world.......2004-02-17
The one problem I had with the book was numerous grammatical errors. I found that in some cases I had to mentally disassemble and rebuild a sentence to understand what was trying to be said.
I would (and have) recommend this book to a coworker and/or friend getting started with telecommunications.
Magnificent! Perfect example of a Technology book everyone can relate too. After finishing this one, I was desperately looking for any other technology book written by this author, couldn't find any. Looking forward to find more books from this Author..

In the dangerous waters of wireless, you want a lifeboat built by a pro. That's why anyone navigating this fast-changing environment needs this essential, tech-savvy, predictive, business-preserving manual.Customer Reviews:
This book is a loosely-organized brain dump by a very experienced, smart guy. It focuses on mobile phones, but is NOT a primer on wireless communications.
Brain dump about mobile phones (by a very smart guy).......2005-06-13
It's not going to be accessible to a wide audience, even though he gives a few preliminary basics. You're expected to know what a dBmw is; you're expected to know what "E V Field" means; you're expected to just believe him when he says that an antenna must be at least 1/2 of the wavelength.
As the other reviews mention, this book is largely biographical, and the facsimile reproductions of patents and business correspondence give it a scrapbook feel. I'd probably get more out of it if I already knew the essentials of mobile telephony.
I got it for $3. That seems about right. The author has been around. He was at Bell Labs when it was great and held technical leadership positions in cellular industry.
An autobiography, not a technical book.......2001-12-07
Unfortunately the book is more about the author's career and personal opinions than technical details as the title infers.
Some of the history is interesting but not worth (the price.)
Ignore the marketing description for this book! It most definitely is not a general primer on wireless technology, or the selection of such technologies for real-world applications. While the book does contain sections which attempt these goals, there are much better treatments elsewhere. These sections are generally too terse, disorganized, and grammatically bizarre to be pedagogically useful.
Read it as an autobiography.......2001-06-28
The bulk of the book is essentially an oral history of Lee's 30-year involvement in the wireless industry. The subject matter is very interesting: the history of AMPS, how the FCC selected the first-generation digital cellular systems, the development of CDMA at Qualcomm, and so on. A bit of this makes for entertaining reading. After a while, however, it begins to feel that the author is being overwhelmingly self-indulgent; in every story, it turns out that he had the pivotal suggestion, insight, or patent which made things work. This kind of self-aggrandizing is fine if done in the right way (e.g., with humor and an occasional tip of the hat to other contributors), however here I get the vibe that he is soon-to-retire and unfortunately insecure about his legacy.
Bottom line: Buy it if you want an autobiography of Lee, or perhaps if you are interested in the history of the industry. Look elsewhere to learn about wireless technology.
The title is somewhat of a misnomer; whereas there is coverage of wireless technologies in general, a substantial portion of this book is devoted to the author's past work in the field. The reader is given insight into projects which the author was intimately involved in, such as the development of the fading model and its application in system design, work done on cellular network capacity, promotion of the first CDMA system and involvement in the OHG for 3G systems. The author's wide experience allows a systems level overview of the technologies involved, which facilitates intuitive understanding. Some portions are ambiguous though, which may or may not be due to the brevity of the text, and the organisation, though novel, is haphazard, with certain items covered in multiple sections. (I hazard that the author's busy schedule has something to do with this, or perhaps this is vindication for an aside on the superior understanding of genuises found in the book!) There are some mistakes, both in the text and the acompanying equations and figures.
Lots of insight, but lacking in organisation and clarity.......2001-05-10
Even though the coverage of relevant topics, albeit brief, is comprehensive, I feel that readers new to the field can find better and easier reading elsewhere; the technically-inclined may like a brisk look for the interesting nuggets contained within, such as the reasons for choice of TDMA over FDMA for the first digital systems in the US, and predictions on further developments in the arena.
Dr. Lee's book begins with a review of the development of telephones and wireless technologies, then continues with essentials such as evaluating spectrum, how to select a digital system and applications of CDMA. The book concludes with Dr. Lee's predictions for the future of the Internet and wireless.
The "de facto resource" on Wireless Communications.......2001-03-20
I have almost all the books authored by Dr. Lee. His books have influenced much to the development of the mobile industry. If you appreciate his previous titles, this book will not disappoint you.

Last year at a Hollywood Post Alliance meeting a senior technical production executive said to an audience of technical professionals, "If you don't have a strong foundation in video, networking and IT....you will not work in our business any longer."
Order it right now.......2006-12-10
What he was really saying is, go out and get Kovalick's book and read it. And then read it again.
I liked this book a lot. I am not a video engineer - however, I need high performance hardware and I need to understand how to connect it all. I needed to understand what it takes to put together a networked high performance system of relational databases (emphases on high performance and databases) - SAN's, NAS's, RAID's, etc. This book describes it at the correct level.
A systems integrator from VA, USA.......2006-04-11
I was looking for a general overview of SAN's, NAS, DAS, and other high throughput fast storage and networking descriptions. This book has it without overwhelming you with 8B/10B encoding and modulation nonsense. As a systems integrator in the broadcast and professional video industry, we face issues associated with the converging IT and professional AV media environments on almost daily basis. To date, we have had to build our own knowledge base to address these matters and have found no one source that appropriately deals with these merging industries - well this book addresses these issues head on.
Practial Theory - Put it to Work.......2006-02-10
Personally, I found this book really "hit the spot" as it relates to the broadcast and media industry as it stands today (as well as in the near future). I found this book to be up to date and topics discussed exceedingly relevant. Although this book tackles a broad array of topics, from media network deployment and management to video system fundamentals and architectures, the information covered was well presented and logically organized which made it a very comfortable read.
This book is a must for anyone (IT managers, as well as network and video engineers alike) who have an interest in producing, managing, and distributing video media. This book is of interest to any technical professional working with video. In the past, we could view the world of IT as of increasing value but not central to a video system. No longer. This book comprehensively lays out the myriad of technologies and issues to be considered as we incorporate the power and economy of IT servers and networking ever more broadly into our broadcast and production facilities.
Convergence.......2006-02-06
As a professional who serves the pro-video and broadcast market, I've been eagerly awaiting my copy of Video Systems in an IT Environment. I just received my order a few weeks ago from Amazon.com and I've now had a chance to absorb several chapters -- with more to come.
The Golden Reference for Video and IT Engineers.......2006-01-12
First impressions: Wow! Substantial. Meaty. First of its kind. When you receive this book in the mail, the first thing you notice upon opening the package is the sheer weight and tasteful abstract art on the front cover. This is a hefty 600-page volume packed with hundreds of detailed illustrations and lots of examples. When it comes to understanding principles of modern networked media for video and audio, this Focal Press work deserves a prominent place in any serious video or IT engineer's reference library.
Although this book is oriented towards the professional media or broadcast systems engineer (as opposed to a video consumer building a home media network), the author does a nice job of weaving together the essentials of networked media from "A to Z" including a handy glossary of terms for those of us who can't keep our acronyms straight. I've known the author, Al Kovalick, who's a well regarded figure in the broadcast community. His breadth of knowledge is evident throughout each chapter, yet he writes in a witty, practical style that's both educational and fun to read (including some pretty subtle humor that will make an engineer chuckle). Without sacrificing depth, this book takes a complex technical subject and brings it down to earth, making it suitable even for less technical (but motivated) readers. I like the "It's a Wrap" section found at the end of each chapter that summarizes the salient points of each chapter.
Bottom line, this book is for you if you're seeking a solid overview of key engineering considerations when designing or recommending networked video architectures, including networking fundamentals, virus and firewall protection, video servers, NSPOF (no single point of failure) storage design including RAID and RAIN methods, as well as other innovative architectures. Several real-world case studies complement the teaching benefits including specific examples by leading-edge media companies and broadcasters.

The only complete source of information on IP switching and routing technologies
A master at distilling complex need-to-know networking technologies into a clear, to-the-point narrative, proven author Stephen Thomas now tackles IP switching and routing--the backbone of all Internet communications. He presents all the relevant technologies in the context of real-world applications, offering concise explanations and over 150 illustrations that make complex topics easy to understand. An invaluable resource for network managers and service provider professionals, this book delivers complete coverage of routing technologies--distance vector, link state, and path vector--as well as the full roster of Internet standard routing protocols: Routing Information Protocol (RIP), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF). The text then documents advances that enable Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), including the MPLS architecture, its interaction with standards routing protocols, Constraint-Based Label Distribution Protocol (CR-LDP), and traffic engineering extensions to the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP-TE).Customer Reviews:
I purchased this book and returned it, not because it was a bad book, it wasn't. As a matter of fact had I not purchased a MPLS book already or owned the Moy OSPF book. O would have kept it. It is a good book that covers all the required routing protocols, albeit not in enough detail. The book always left me short on detail, I still had questions after I would read a section.
Good book for beginners or intermediate engineer.......2002-03-06
So once again I would say that this is a good book but not a great one. If you are looking for some basics on RIP, OSPF, BGP and MPLS then this is a good book. If you are looking for more detail, like why do ILEC's have IBGP and OSPF running on the same router, and how are these routing protocols used in networks today with some real examples, then look somewhere else.
Cheers!
The documentation of switching and routing in IP networks was very complete and well illustrated. The book also described the concepts in the context of real world applications. Definitely lives up to its "essential" title.
Call It Like It Is - Essential.......2002-01-08
This book really gets down to the nitty-gritty of delivering data on the Internet. It covers numerous protocols, including Routing Information Protocol (RIP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Constraint-based Label Distribution Protocol (CDL-DP), and the Resource Reservation Protocol with Traffic Engineering Extensions (RSVP-TE). This book tells you what you need to know.

Customer Reviews:
I am not sure how to classify this book! Is it a book for a manager? Maybe! Is it a book for a developer new to mobile application development? Not quite! Is it a book for a hardcore technologist (architect, sr developer, product manager, etc)? Definitely not so.
Decent wordy book about basic concepts.......2006-08-14
The content of the book is definitely dated (as of 2006). But, I wouldn't blame the author for this. The field of mobile apps is moving very rapidly. There is a lot of confusion, but, a lot of the smoke is also clearing up. Interesting initiatives like OMA are taking center stage in "clearing up the smoke".
The book is way easy to read. But, that's because it has zero technical content. The book touches a lot of interesting technologies, but doesn't provide details on any. It is my belief that the author could have summarized most of the book in maybe 50 pages, or even less!
The book's biggest value is for somebody new to the field. Its a very quick read. There are tons of web links (again dated, but, some very relevant even today) to consortia, forums, companies involved in mobile application development. I was really hoping that the author would put this list online. But, I haven't found anything similar after searching on the author's name in google.
I usually don't read books word-by-word, line-by-line. I try to grasp the big concepts on the first read. This makes me the worst person to find grammatical mistakes in documents/books. But, even I could find grammatical mistakes on the first (and only) read of this book. The editors need to do a better job next time (if there is a next time). The author seems to be quite articulate to cover a lot of interrelated topics. For each topic, the book provides a nice review of the background information to bring readers to the same page, and then discusses the real issue in load balance context and presents the solutions. The book is also very easy to read as it is concise and to the point.
A fabulous book.......2006-03-10
This book is mostly intended for non-technical people looking for a gentle introduction to the wireless/mobile devices world with a comprehensive survey of the existing technologies.
Good introductory to the wireless world.......2005-10-19
Confused by acronyms like GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, WAP, WI-FI, Bluetooth? This book will cover all that and much more. The author did a fine job by carefully and systematically explained the key wireless technologies in a high-level manner that appeals to a broader audience. Engineers and developers will be disappointed though by the lack of code samples, mobile development strategies and discussion of current mobile devices specificationsThis book delivers a comprehensive look at mobile computing. It gives an overview of devices, networks and security before going in depth on designing applications. It is not a book that has source code for techies, but rather is a perfect reference for people who are looking to learn about mobile and wireless. It saved me hour after hour of research from sometimes questionable Internet sources.
Delivers what it promises -Great overview of Mobile Industry.......2005-04-27
this should be named as mobile and wireless glossary. it's not beyond that. no in depth analysis of design issues or technologies related to wireless and mobile industry. not good for wireless/mobile techies. will recommend to sales people who want to have very high level idea about this field.
Very ordinary.......2005-04-12

Practical RF Circuit Design for Modern Wireless Systems, Volume I : Passive Circuits and Systems
ASIN: 1580539416Book Description
Grounding is a widespread and serious problem in microwave and RF engineering, and up until now, there hasn't been a practical, authoritative resource dedicated to the topic. This first-of-its-kind volume offers professionals a comprehensive understanding of the proper grounding techniques to use when working on varied microwave circuit and antenna design projects. Practitioners learn what problems can occur when grounding design is inadequate, and how to avoid them. The book covers a wide range of critical topics, from the fundamentals of low frequency circuit theory and the differences between DC and RF short circuits to grounding in active microwave component design and grounding issues related to antennas.Customer Reviews:
I thought this book was an excellent treatment of a variety of topics relating to RF/microwave grounding. It was very readable and didn't get too bogged down in the mathematical details in all cases -- though the background was there for those interested. In the first couple of chapters the author covers the basics and brings the reader up to speed relatively quickly using the key concepts without going into incredible detail (this is where I usually stop reading some technical books and just refer to them, in this case I read the book in the first two days I owned it).
Great book to fill an important void in our field.......2006-04-01
It was particularly good to see examples of the concepts demonstrated through actual commercial circuit implementations. There are some very appropriate examples relating to the grounding of amplifiers and filters.
The chapter on transmission line transitions was particularly interesting, I've not seen as wide a treatment of this topic in one place before. The chapter on antennas seemed out of place at first but was quite good.
The book won't necessarily answer all of your questions but it may help to provide you with the background and inspiration you need to figure it out for yourself.

Unlike alot of other books out there, the title of this book is right on the money when it comes to the content of the book. This book IS an essential guide to wireless communications. Like many other people out there, I often read the online articles and technical editorials of Mr. Dornan (do a web search, they are great reading too!). So I thought I could not go wrong with his book. I was right. Starting with a bit of a history lesson, the author takes you through current 2/2.5G cellular and then hits the ground running. He doesn't stop until he has covered 3G, wireless LANs, messaging, WAP, wireless e-commerce, security, fixed wireless (WLL) and satellite technology. Mr. Dornan has a great writing style and throughly knows his material. So, no matter what your knowledge level, the read always has a light and easy feel to it and is still able to communicate a ton of relivant information to you. If you need a good starting place on wireless communications or a refresher course, you won't find too many books better than this one.
Right on the money!.......2003-06-11
I really got tired of not understanding wireless tech talk: G3 networks etc. I also wanted to understand why my cell phone kept fading in and out and dropping calls as I drove certain routes. So I bought this book and read it. The book does a good job of explaining in easy to understand terms the technology. The big revelation or understanding point to me was that EVERYTHING wireless is analogous to the radio, with broadcast points (cell towers) and receivers (cell phones). The difference is one of frequency. I finally got the analog vs. digital concept that eluded me for so long for some reason. While attempting to do justice to all major wireless regions of the world, US, Asia (Japan) and Europe I found the British author biased to his home turf. Which is expected and fine but I wanted something slightly more balanced. Towards the end I became a very selective skimmer and did not really finish the book, but I got out of it what I wanted.
Educational explanation of wireless.......2002-12-24
If you are a marketing, business development, sales, or finance professional transitioning to the wireless field, this is the book for you. Mr. Dornan covers the topics in sufficient depth to make you knowledgeable without burying you in technical detail and equations. I've bought many books about technology and most are too technical so I lose interest. I am nearly finished with this book and it has be very valuable in the work I do. I would recommend it very highly.
Excellent introduction to wireless.......2002-08-17
I started reading it on Saturday and couldn't put it down, I was done by Tuesday. Sure the book has some spelling and gramatical errors (My Theory is that the editiors were put to sleep by it) but it talks about everything from the phones themselves, to wireless infrasturcuture, the building of a cell site, and commerence on Mobile Phones. It is really great for any techie that wants to know about phones, and even some who don't consider themselves techies. I enjoyed it quite a bit A+!
As a Wireless Guru, this book is one of the best.......2002-06-27
This is a good book. It's the only book about wireless technology I've seen that actually takes the health effects of cellphones seriously. In addition to how mobile technology works and what it can do, the author devotes an entire chapter to the health problems, and comes down firmly "on the fence". He definitely thinks there's something to the fears (even though he's enthusiastic about the technology, as is clear from the rest of the book) and I agree with him.
Health fears explained and exposed.......2002-05-16
