- A companion Web site that includes an online directory of Internet business resources
- A list of legal and business requirements
Get going, and build a booming business right at home. The only people you’ll have to take orders from are customers, and those are the kind of orders you’ll like!

Buy the latest version.......2007-09-16
This book is useful when you are just starting an online business. Just make sure you buy the latest version so that some information is not outdated by the time you are ready to set up your online business.
Worth it's weight in gold if you're going online!.......2007-08-18
I just got this book last week and I'm not even done with it and have gotten so many 'nuggets' that it has more than paid for itself already! It's well written, easy to understand, organized extremely well for easy reference and full of helpful resources.
The section on 'Keeping it legal' saved me great error already (I was going to buy a domain name that could've infringed on a copyright) and I have found several free web builders online that are 10x's better than what I had been using. There's so much practical information in this book that I no longer feel guilty for buying it new.
This book is zero fluff, tons of examples and free or very reasonable resources, and lots of food for thought. The table of contents is so detailed that it makes for a quick reference (does anyone read a book like this cover to cover?) Greg Holden's writing style is personable and to the point and very easy to understand.
I truly don't understand all the reviews that say this book is no good, not sure what they have been reading, but I have no less than a dozen books of this nature, and this is one of the few that isn't 75% fluff. I'm somewhat of a website newbie, starting about a year ago trying to do my own website. It's alot harder (for me)than I originally thought and have tried no less than 6 different hosting accounts, 4 different online web builders, and 6 different web editing software trials (Expressions, dreamweaver, publisher, coffee cup, page spinner and frontpage). One of the best discoveries in this book was that Firefox offered a FREE...quality...web editor!
This is the 2007 edition, maybe people were referring to the earlier version of the same title. I have gotten way more out of this book than I thought I would. I guess I must be a true "Dummie". It's definitely worth your time checking it out if you are new to the online business world, you can always resell it on Amazon and recover your moola.
this one really is for dummies.......2007-08-05
One of the worst "For Dummies" books I've ever read. Normally, I'd rate for dummies books a 3 or 4.
Not worth it.......2007-04-19
You could do an online search and find more information than this book gives you. I did not enjoy and I returned it. It is broad and never really gives you step by step instrucions on how the webite actually works and how to create it.
very rudimentary, broad overview.......2007-04-14
People who use the internet regularly will not get much out of this book--it's no joke when it says "for dummies". Greg Holden does give a broad overview of the many aspects to starting an online business but even then the information is outdated and at some points, simply not accurate making you wonder where this guy gets his facts.
In an environment that is not only competitive but also changes rapidly it is important that you are equipped with the most up to date information. This book however, still proclaims AOL king and web sites using tables and frame "advanced". Although the book was published in 2006 (and in its 4th revision), it feels more like it belongs to the 90's.
So even if you are new to the internet and need a place to start I recommend you find yourself a different book.

Not up to the Dummies standard.......2007-06-16
I had hoped that, since this book discusses both fundamental and technical analysis, it would be a balanced blend of the two. However, it is almost entirely a technical analysis book, that acknowledges the existence of fundamentals and not much else.
The fact that the book doesn't match my investment style isn't enough on its own to earn a two-star rating from me. Unfortunately, it is also poorly written, and poorly edited. It is wordy, jargony, confusing, vague, and occasionally (as near as I can tell) inaccurate. Most significantly, it is missing the spark that made the reputation of the Dummies books - the inspired organization and careful choice of topics that allow a single book to provide a useful foundation in a complicated subject.
That said, I did (laboriously) read the whole thing. It added some polish to my chart-reading abilities. It also helped me to understand some previously inexplicable aspects of market behavior. I am not likely to become a technical analyst anytime soon, but I now feel slightly better prepared to share the marketplace with them.
Excellent foundation for the beginning trader.......2007-01-05
Trading for Dummies is an excellent book for anyone interested in starting to trade stocks. This book really kept me wanting to read on and on because every section was filled with plenty of information. The way the chapters are arranged were very good in that you don't have to be going back and forth to understand the whole concept. One thing I noticed was that this book is for someone who wants to be a position trader as opposed to a day trader, which is good because that is what I want to do. For someone who knows absolutely nothing about how the stock market works, this book is an excellent read. Overall I give it the full five stars.
Must read for those who want to make money.......2006-08-04
Great book. Covers all the bases, including fundamental and technicals. I have read a few of the other Dummies books on investing and all were well written. This book is for those who want to make money, not just buy and hold and hope for the best. I learned more about trading/investing with the Dummies series than 4 years of college majoring in finance. And yes, I have made money.
Great Introduction.......2006-04-14
IMHO The reason the "for dummies" brand has been successfull aside from the catchy name, is the actual content and material of the books themselves.
This book has been a great read for some one like myself that already had an idea of what investing entails, but that does not preclude total beginners with no idea from gaining an immense amount of great information from this book.
It is written in plain language and is a great place for a beginner to start his journey.
Good book + Free trading.......2005-10-30
This book is especially good for the person who wants a broad overview of investing. It will give you a solid foundation to begin growing your money from. After reading, I opened a Scottrade account because they had the lowest rates ($7), and no inactivity fee. [...] to get a referral for 3 free trades.

Very Happy.......2007-07-22
The book was a lifesaver. It was in good condition and came in a timely manner.
eBay Overview.......2007-03-31
Beginners will find many useful tidbits to help them get a sucessful eBay business started. This book is a good starting point.
Useful.......2007-03-10
Some useful information on ebay. Not all ideas work for all items being sold, but gives you ideas.
Very surprised.......2007-02-07
Its a great first and reference book for beginners or if your thinking of selling anything on Ebay.
General Overview for eBay begginers.......2007-01-10
Overall this book was an easy read. The information is marginally useful. I would not say it is the best book on ebay selling, but there are bits of advice that I found useful. What I think lacked attention was the section on getting inventory, there just wasn't enough sources.
However the book does give advice on going legite and all the paper work you need to complete.
It is a good general book for starting, but not the only one you will need to run an eBay business.

Investing Online for Dummies, 5th edition.......2007-01-10
The delivery was on time. The book is good for me
You don't have to buy this. .......2007-01-03
I came here to write a review for this book, and found that a reviewer below, "A reader", had already written what I was going to write. This book provides a reader with no information, but with long lists of websites to look at. You can access those websites most often just wasting time (like "A reader" already said). Using search engines like Google/Yahoo is much better than thumbing through this book.
Good Concise Overview to Get One Started.......2005-05-15
You can't watch television these days without getting bombarded with ads for on line brokerage companies. What's been missing has been a centralized source for information about the whole thing. This book provides that source. It's not complete - if it were it would be so big that you couldn't carry it around - but it's a great start.
You can read this book from cover to cover in just a few hours. That is, just a few hours if you don't take the time to go out on the web looking at the things she suggests. And that right there is the key to this book. Here is a good start that covers the whole field from A to Z, and at nearly each and every point along the way she points you to web sites for more information about specific points.
The problem with going to the web for more information, of course, is that web sites appear, go away, merge or whatever. She admits this, but accepts this risk and gives you multiple sites (you couldn't possibly visit all that she mentions) or suggests ways to find a missing or dead site.
This is a great way to get the basic information you need before getting started with selecting a broker and deciding what to buy.
Get Up To Speed With New Strategies, Tools and Resources.......2005-04-07
This newest edition of "Investing Online for Dummies" reflects the latest changes and improvements to online investing Web sites. Addresses building an online information system, setting up a basic investment strategy, determining how much to invest, selecting an online broker and trading online, finding the right investments, performing Internet transactions securely, saving on commissions, managing a portfolio, and much more.
A great guide for online investing .......2005-03-22
As I surf the Web, I often feel that it's like visiting a library where all the books have been spilled on the floor. The information is there but I don't know where to begin my search. "Investing Online For Dummies" explained how to get started, steered me to free or low cost online services, pointed out the important parts of Web sites, and showed me the process of online investing.

Good for Motivation.......2006-12-20
This is a good book for motivation and an intro to network marketing if you know nothing at all. Zig is a great motivator. You'll need additional sources of information if you want to get in depth knowlege of how mlm works.
Zig Tells it Like it is!.......2006-11-23
This is the most comprehensive, informative book I have read on network marketing. Zig lays it out with complete honesty warning readers to stay clear of get rich quick schemes and faulty compensation plans. I learned that the network marketing company I left, while operating within Federal boundaries, is pushing the envelope with some of its sales tactics and covertly encouraging representatives to "front load". At the same time, I discovered that the company I am with now is operating with complete honesty and well within Federal guidelines. As for the naysayers, great speakers and trainers do not necessarily make great business owners. That doesn't mean they can't impart valuable information along to the student. Zig does what he does best. I do not hold his failed network marketing business against him. I'll take Zig's advice and think positive and surround myself with positive people.
Beginner's How-To Manual for any person new to network marketing.......2006-02-18
Zig explains network marketing in simple, easy to understand terms. In chapter 5, "Evaluating Network Marketing Companies", Zig discusses several questions a person should ask to whether they are pursing the right network marketing company.
Also, in chapter 10, "Knowing What to Do After You Sign Up" was very helpful for me in taking the next step.
A Book That Teaches One To Sell.......2005-11-19
Albeit the fact that Zig Ziglar's own MLM bit the dust, this book is great for those who would like to learn how to retail their MLM products.
Also this book does NOT cover much about the pitfalls one is bound to encounter in network marketing.
James Leong
Author of "MLM Persuasion Mastery:
How Master Networkers Change Beliefs
and Behavior"
Good basic MLM book by Zig.......2004-06-16
Zig Ziglar is America's motivator. As another reviewer has already alluded to, 75% of Fortune 500 companies utilize Zig's training systems. And Zig has trained over 1,000 network marketers. Zig was also successful himself as a network marketer and in direct sales. He speaks from experience.
More importantly, Zig is a great trainer. He knows how to bring out the best in everyone. And co author John P. Hayes has his own powerful credentials.
This book is particularly good for newbies in network marketing. Zig will show you how to pick your first company, what to look for, what to look out for and to what to avoid. He gives his usual motivational tips and it is updated to include the internet.
If you are new to network marketing, then I cannot recommend this book enough. Also recommend Mark Yarnels excellent book, Your First Year in Network Marketing.

Ecommerce is moving ahead.......2007-09-03
A general book like this is good, but the world of ecommerce is developing so rapidly. The change is accelerating, and even the acceleration is picking up steam.
The question for the small guy is this. Is a book like this going to help on the big issues of SEO and what ecommerce platform to use?
fast commerce where you can set up a store for free is the most helpful. Easy to use and it has all the tools needed to run an online business. A great start for the small business owner. Get your own free ecommerce website up and running in minutes.
[fastcommerce]
Even experienced sellers will learn something.......2007-07-08
I have bought and sold stuff online for years and this book still had useful information in it. It gives useful, specific sources for many different categories of eCommerce.
I have paid much more for courses and books from so called marketing experts that didn't have near as much information.
So often you will read or hear that you need to do this or that, but they never tell you the specific places that you can go to get it done.
The many different categories of selling advice would at first make you think that it just glosses over them but once you start to read you see that they are one of the strengths of this book... you just keep finding good advice to tweak and improve your online business.
From web site design and boosting traffic to credit card acceptance to keeping your customers happy or even legal advice for people just starting out, it's hard to name just one part that would be considered the best part of this book. Site security to even the basics of chosing a business name are covered.
It doesn't matter if you are only thinking about starting an online business or if you have various web sites and are an experienced eBay user, there will be something in here that will make you glad you bought it.
Excellent- From Basic info to More Advanced all in One!.......2007-06-18
This book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.
A Great Reference!.......2007-01-12
A wonderful reference to have at your desk. It truly is like having lots of books in 1 - 800+ pages!

Great eBay starter book.......2007-06-14
If you are trying to get started in eBay you gotta get this book.
Good comprehensive starting point for the prospective eBay-er.......2007-03-28
This author is one of the current gurus in the area of making a ton by selling stuff on eBay. I've been registered there for almost a decade myself, buying books and stamps at first, and then selling them. I was never out to amass a fortune, the way Collier and so many others seems to be, but I've made a slow and steady income and I've been happy with that. Since I taught myself how to do all that stuff back when eBay was still a relatively site, I've never felt the need of a how-to book, but a colleague recommended this one so I decided to take a look at it. Not bad, not bad at all. While enthusiastic (because it's required by the publisher of this series), Collier manages not to get carried away too often. For instance, she will suggest good online business practices, then confess that she seldom follows this one or that one herself. I didn't find anything I didn't already know in the "Basics" section (which was kind of a relief), but she has some interesting things to say about researching goods on the Web, whether you're buying or selling, and some subtle points about the way PayPal works which I hadn't really thought about, and so on. The author also has a strong background in marketing and sales and what she has a number of thoughtful things to say regarding the application of that experience to eBay, things that us humanities majors have never had to learn. So, while I won't follow her advice on using QuickBooks, and I don't expect to open an eBay Store, I certainly put a lot of bookmarks in this fat volume for future reference and rereading.
Very informative!.......2007-03-13
Although you will find yourself needing a lot of time to read it, I think this book has all what you need to know about ebay. either to buy or sell. It is very informative and easy to read. I recomend it.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-02-14
If you're on a tight budget, much of what she tells you is actually explained on eBay in the "Site Map", but you can't spend ALL your time online! For example: I wanted to have my own domain outside eBay. Marsha provided a springboard saving me hours of research time. I ended up with one of her suggestions. That tip alone has saved me beaucoup $$. Ideal for beginning to intermediate sellers.
CON: this deals only with eBay. I find selling on Amazon often to be the better choice. Also no mention of Overstock nor Yahoo.

Excellent Overview of Internet Marketing.......2007-08-18
Jan Zimmerman's Web Marketing For Dummies gives you an excellent overview or summary of internet marketing tactics and strategies. She clearly helps you determine the purpose of your website and how to drive traffic to your website or landing page. She covers many topics from search engine optimization to blogging.
This book helps anyone who is starting online marketing and it provides an excellent checklist for experienced webmarketers. In fact, her Web Marketing Methods Checklist in chapter 2 is worth the purchase price of the book alone.
When you want to "drill deeper" on any particular online marketing strategy, you will then have to explore other online marketing resources and information. For example, Peter Kent's Pay Per Click Search Engine Marketing For Dummies provides thorough information about pay per click advertising, including Google Adwords.
In short, I highly recommend Web Marketing for Dummies for both new and experienced internet marketers.

I learned so much from this book.......2007-03-30
This book took my business, AUDIN Web Design, to new heights. Now anyone can just type in AUDIN Web Design in Google (or Yahoo and MSN, for that matter) and find me. This book allowed me to master Google, the juggernaut of search engines. If you cannot tame that tiger, you will not survive in the market place. My company, AUDIN Web Design, has helped many small business get ranked on Google. This is my bible. I carry it around wherever I go. I advise everyone to read this book before consulting a professional about your online search needs. You could get ripped off if you are not wise about your choice of Company. This book has given me such confidence with the Google juggernaut, that my company now offers a 100% money back guarantee policy. A lot of companies can't offer that because they don't know what they are doing. Read this book and get informed. It could save you lots of money, yes money, the stuff you work so hard for. The stuff makes the world go round.
A must read for any business owner........2006-03-09
Since Google is currently master of the universe you need to understand what Google is looking for when it ranks web pages. This book not only does that but goes into detail of other Google services like froogle, adsense and adwords. I highly recommend this book to anybody trying to build a presence on the web.
Easy to Understand, organized well.......2005-06-14

Solid Overview of AdSense, AdWords, Froogle and Catalogs.......2005-03-18
"Building Your Business with Google For Dummies" by Brad Hill is one of many options for learning Google's tools. This one is focused on using it to promote business websites.
You might not need this book. To find out, go to Google's website, and create an account. Look at the FAQs, testimonials and the help areas. Much of what's in Hill's book is logical, but is organized in as sensibly as any I have seen. I need this book for that reason. It saved me time from having to learn this information in a too slow trial-and-error way.
You'll learn a few important things about Google, and how to help them help you attract traffic, sell products, or create interest in your website.
AdWords
I have an online e-commerce site, and need to know Google. As a smaller business, I can't compete with the major companies in being listed in categories I feel are important. That's where Google AdWords comes in. It allows me, for a fee per click, to compete.
Hill's explanation of strategies and process is solid. There are ways to lose money, and he helps show how to test keywords, use ad groups, edit ads, and how to bid intelligently. He also looks at the premium service that allows big businesses to use oogle with less worry about click-through rates.
AdSense
AdSense, the tool that places Google ads on websites based on the page's content. While I only make a few cents when a vistor clicks through an ad, it helps me provide a service to my customers who do not feel my site met their needs.
Hill explains how AdSense makes money, and warns against cheating.
Increasing Your Page Rank
No one knows Google's formula for ranking pages. The most important factor is having useful information, being linked on other like-minded sites, not abusing the process.
Hill tells you what page rank means, and how to avoid mistakes many webmasters make. This includes tips on design, domain choice, keyword use.
Using Froogle and Google Catalogs
These are two features I have never used. Hill gives a good overview of this Google tool, which provides exposure to those websites selling products in a catalog-style, or through AOL and Yahoo shops.
I fully recommend "Building Your Business with Google For Dummies" by Brad Hill.

For the Site Manager.......2005-01-18
This is a book on Google's back end business aspects. It is not concerned with searching to find information. Instead it is on directing more attention, more business to your web site. The book is divided into two major themes, first working to make your site more Google friendly, and second working with Google's paid services including advertising on Google's site using programs like Google AdWords and AdSense. There's a chapter on Google's elusive Page Rank system that talks extensively about Google's philosophies on links and how they affect Page Ranking.
Book Description
This update to Marketing Online For Dummies includes all of the great topics from the original book, plus an additional focus, Internet advertising, a very hot topic. The right Internet advertising campaign can cost very little and make a product launch or even a company a winner; the wrong approach can be a huge waste of time and effort. The authors have hands-on experience doing both guerrilla marketing and million-dollar deals in this critical area. Also covered in this edition is a quick-start guide to getting net-savvy, a survival requirement in the Web marketing world.

Strategy still solid, examples dated.......2007-03-02
As the co-author of this book (so I gave it a neutral, mid-range rating), I agree that the examples in it are dated. The parts about building a strategy, however, are still strong, as are some of the definitions and general tactical suggestions. However, if anyone is looking for flavor-of-the-month Internet marketing tactics (as what works best has changed over time), or current examples or resources, I would recommend another book. For strategy, though, this still works.
Internet Marketing for Dummies.......2007-02-17
This book is okay. It is outdated but well intentioned. If he updated it, it would be fine. If you are a rank beginner, you can still get some use out of it. Some of the other reviews are horrible, but I can't say they are totally justified. I'd very strongly recommend:
"Internet Marketing Secrets: Make a Bundle on the Internet" this is very good book and it will get you started on making REAL money!

A little outdated..........2007-01-18
They need to revise many of their chapters. Most of the content is completely outdated as it was written in the year 2000/2001. If you buy this book, you won't be able to follow most of the suggestions or go to most of the websites this book refers you to, give or take a couple valuable recommendations that stand the test of time. It's not worth the purchase because it will mislead you.
Instead, look to buy a guide that was published within the past year.
Lacks in valuable content.......2002-11-10
I recently purchased this book so I could get a better edge on marketing my online business. After spending a couple of days reading this book and researching some of the information presented I can conclusively say that this book did not teach me anything that I did not already know.
I will also add that some of the most important areas of Internet marketing were not even focused on for more than a single sentence or paragraph; leading me to believe that the gentlemen that wrote this book are not versed in online business, as much as they are with the brick and mortars.
I would strongly recommend not purchasing this book if you want to learn more about Internet marketing. I'm sure there is a good book out there for this, however I have not found it yet.
Regards,
DK
A hand book and guide you've been looking for.......2000-12-27
Internet Marketing for Dummies Internet Marketing for Dummies is a must read book for any small business person new to online marketing. There's a lot of hype about marketing on the Internet, but the book's authors Frank Catalano and Bud Smith - do not hype your expectations. I knew that Internet Marketing for Dummies was not going to be another "let down" when I noticed that the authors included many of the online marketing resources that I frequent on a daily basis! Catalano and Smith begin their book by explaining that "Internet marketing" is "marketing" but using the Internet - and this is very important to understand. So many businesses want to rush into "online marketing", but don't have any clue about how even to market at all. The fundamentals of marketing, apply online as well as off line. Internet Marketing for Dummies walks the user through a fast over view of the Internet - explaining what AOl is, as compared to full access to the Internet. This chapter is very helpful for the many small businesses that are really not so sure what the Internet is all about. Chapter 2 and 3 of Internet Marketing for Dummies realy lays in to the nitty gritty of marketing, with a consentration in chapter two on developing an "Internet Marketing Plan" I was very impressed that the authors of this book took a whole chapter to also discuss and help the reader decide their domain name. Your business name, may indeed be "Faulkner, Grade and Berkmenstein" - however, you may wan to try out "greatlawyers.com" for a domain name! There's a lot of gems in Internet Marketing for Dummies , such as a nice section on effectively using email as a marketing tool. On page 155, chapter 8, Internet Marketing for Dummies lists "techniques for gathering visitor information" on your Web site. See, Internet marketing is more than "just" Internet marketing, but its a blend of leveraging your own Web site, reaching out to others, adveritising on Web sites, building an email list and etc. Internet Marketing for Dummies is one of those books you just keep as a guide on your desk and refer to daily. After you've launched some successful online marketing campaigns you'll be a pro and can then refine what you've learned in Internet Marketing for Dummies.
