Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Reference.......2007-01-04

I am not a very experienced Project Manager.
I bought the book as I was going to participate in Projects in my organization and planned to equip myself with everything I could about it.

Also, I took 2 Microsoft Oficial Courses (beginner and intermediate) on Microsoft Project 2003 that costed my organization about $200.

I give it 5 Stars because the book has every topic there is about Microsoft Project 2003 that I have come to need (and more).

However, if you are new to MS Project consider that it might pay you more to take some courses. You will learn in them all the backbone knowledge to succesfully manage projects without having to spent alot of hours reading the book.

Remember that this book is very extensive on each topic, it's excellent for reference or advanced use specially when you're an experienced project Manager since you will learn stuff you didnt know you could do.
But if what you're looking for is learning Project 2003, I think its faster and more practical to take a course.

2 out of 5 stars Not-so-hot.......2006-02-01

Using Microstoft Project 2003 by Tim Pyron
It's exactly 2.000 inches thick, which, I believe, must have been one of the publisher's criteria. If you've used Project for years on a daily basis and want to know even more, it's for you. If you want to learn Microsoft Project, don't buy this book. It's a direct violation of the "Say what you need to, as simply as you can" rule from 8th grade English. Do yourself a favor. Forget about MS Project and buy Mindjet's MindManager software. You can learn that in an afternoon and it's far more powerful software.

5 out of 5 stars The only book that provides answers to tough questions.......2005-08-25

I have three other project books on my shelf but whenever I run into a tough situation, this is THE book I go to. No other books out there (not even the self proclaimed bible) explains features as in depth as this book does. I especially like the section on leveling and how it explains the 7 factors used to resolve conflicts. This is a must have for all serious users of MS Project.

5 out of 5 stars More Project than I thought possible.......2004-07-13

I picked this up as I was in the middle of several complex Project plans for network upgrades and migrations, as well as a mass rollout of Office 2003. I'd used previous versions of Project before but never really learned how to use it.

By the time I finished the first 10 chapters, I had already tripled my Project knowledge...and the really cool stuff was yet to come. Project, like Visio, is an extremely complex application that most people never crack the surface as far as usability goes. Anyone who is doing heavy Project Management needs to use Project, this is the book to learn by.

5 out of 5 stars Answers to effectively manage computerized office projects.......2004-05-06

Tim Pyron's Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Project 2003 is enhanced with an accompanying CD and provides direct answers to effectively manage computerized office projects. Highly recommended both as an instructional guide and as a continuing reference, Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Project 2003 includes answers on project development and implementation, as well as tracking progress and adjusting to changes, developing final reports, and more.

Billed as "The only Access 2003 book you need," Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Access 2003 is a comprehensive reference book that may well live up to its slogan. It covers all aspects of Microsoft's small but powerful database environment, from user-level features to Transact-SQL, Active Data Objects (ADO), and InfoPath. While you probably will want a separate reference for Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), or whatever programming environment you're using, this book indeed comprehensive in terms of Access 2003 itself. Coverage of T-SQL is particularly helpful, thanks to the author's extensive use of illustrative examples in those sections. Further, he takes care to help readers prepare for the imminent retirement of the Jet database engine and the required migration for Microsoft SQL Server.

Roger Jennings' coverage of the user-level part of Access (the editing, formatting, and design functions, and the wizards that make them easier to use) is standard Que fare, full of carefully indexed procedures and lots of hints and tips that call attention to potential problems and obscure capabilities. Later chapters--the ones that will be of greater interest to people doing application-development work--rely more heavily (and appropriately so) on code snippets and explanations of what they do. Even in the more programmer-oriented sections, though, there are numbered steps to follow in order to achieve desired effects, such as exporting data to XML and setting up an InfoPath form. --David Wall

Topics covered: User- and developer-level traits and capabilities of Microsoft Access 2003. Emphasis falls on relational database design, data entry and validation techniques, form design, sorting and reporting, CrossTabs and PivotTables, and Transact-SQL. There's coverage of the differences between the Jet database engine and the Microsoft SQL Server database environment, and notes on developing applications for both.

Book Description

Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Access 2003 is a comprehensive reference for all the features of Access 2003. This edition adds new chapters on collaboration with Microsoft SharePoint Team Server, and creating or consuming XML Web Services, both of which are hot topics. The XML chapter includes Access 2003's new XML export/import features.

The book's organization follows the development process for typical Access database applications. Detailed, step-by-step instructions with icons guide those who are new to Access through table design, data addition, importing data from external sources, query design and execution, and designing data entry forms and printed reports. Chapters on advanced form and report design emphasize data-entry efficiency and presentation clarity.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I found this book to be a bit confusing.......2007-03-13

The idea is good to try to introduce ACCESS fundtionality through building up some real application (he uses that Northwind sample).

However, I found that it is inadequately explained. Or in many instances, missing the explanation all together. On Chapter 26 - a basic intro of InfoPATH - a good attempt that fail miserably !! I thought he would explains how InfoPath would be integrated as an entry FORM for ACCESS Apps but it was just a basic intro of InfoPATH.

Actaully I want to give only 1 star, but seeing that some examples from the CD could be made useful - so I give him one more star for that.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Book I hvae ever Seen.......2006-02-24

I wish I could select rating for this book lower that one star. This is a horrible book I have ever seen in my life. This
book Is poorly indexed . I would not recommend anyone to go for this book. I serched google for my acess problems when I found, it was impossible to get it from this book. I can give you one example 'how to right update-query' . Someone go and look in this book , it's horrible to understand what the author is saying insted searh in google ' Update-Query in MS Acess' you will get nice explanatory answers.

Again minus 10 Rating for this book

5 out of 5 stars Manual.......2005-12-17

Easy to read. Already used on one project. Just another manual in an excellent series.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of how, not enough why.......2005-03-15

This book is not for beginners, and may not be for anybody. It is poorly indexed, making it very difficult to find a desired topic. It is also largely based on step-by-step examples, without enough explanation of why something works the way it does. In other words, plenty of detail on specific, pre-determined tasks, but scant exploration of broad topics and ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Unfinished Editing.......2004-05-11

Although this book is very good, as are most Que books, it appears that the book wasn't totally re-done for Access 2003.

There are numerous sections in the book that discuss the new features of Access 2002 (not 2003).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars POWERPOINT and MORE!.......2004-06-26

This is absolutely the best PowerPoint book out there! I create presentations for our salespeople and they, at times, need to make edits and changes. When I showed this book to them, their overwhelming reaction was about the second section of the book on presentation skills by Tom Mucciolo. They found it so helpful, especially because they have to present PowerPoint presentations all the time.

The first part of the book, by Patrice Rutledge and others is extremely helpful for anyone who has to use PowerPoint, even if they've been using it for a while. The step-by-step instructions guide you through all the features of the program with a lot of screen shots and examples.

But, the last 230 pages made all the difference, especially to me, since I am very uncomfortable speak in front of any size group. Tom Mucciolo's writing style is so easy-to-read combining light-hearted and humorous comments with very practical presentation advice. I never knew that standing on one side of the room rather than the other side makes a difference!

He breaks down the presentation process into all the stages from the initial script, to the visual design and into the basic and advanced levels of delivery. He talks about using and abusing multimedia and he even goes into great detail about room setup and other logistics that so many presenters forget about completely.

Our salespeople each have a copy of this book and the second part is a "must" read for them. Even if you only design presentations, the presentation advice in this book will help not only you but anyone who presents the visuals you prepare.

3 out of 5 stars An adequate book.......2004-05-05

The concept of having the theory of presentations separated from the practice in the two separate halves of the book did not really work for me. I would have liked the book to be about PowerPoint and only PowerPoint from start to finish.

3 out of 5 stars Complete but flawed.......2004-04-09

For ever since I remember Que has producing big books on a program which have details of almost everything the program does. Que bills this as "the only PowerPoint 2003 book you'll need," and though that may be open to question, this book would be worth choosing if you only had one book.

Patrice-Anne Rutledge has done a great job of showing how to use the features. The book is full of screen shots and explanations of choices in dialog boxes, and there's plenty of evidence that she draws on her experience of presentations she's created.

However . . . presentations aren't just about knowing how to use the program. You need skills in creating slides and delivering them. The last 230 pages of this 720 page book are written by Tom Mucciolo, and this is where the book falls down.

In spite of having his own business coaching people on how to present, in print Mucciolo has trouble getting to the point, and his chapters are full of superfluous text and often unfunny and annoying jokes. It's almost as though he was struggling to make the chapters long enough.

So ignore the book beyond page 491. What you'll get is well-written details of the program; what you'll miss is a few ideas that aren't really worth reading the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great PowerPoint Book!.......2003-11-20

This is a great book on PowerPoint 2003. It covers every topic imaginable about how to use PowerPoint and also has a detailed section about how to actually deliver your presentation, which other PowerPoint books that I looked at didn't have. This was a big plus to someone like me who isn't always comfortable delivering presentations. The included CD was nice as well and has some useful programs.

Book Description

Tired of Office books that read as though Microsoft employees wrote them? Tired of books containing little more than you can pull from the Help system?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book. Most books written on Microsoft products simply parrot the information found in the Help files or the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Not this book. It has been written by the Office Dream Team, Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard, the most well recognized and respected authoring team in the business. Even the Office development team at Microsoft listens when these guys speak! Not only do Ed and Woody show you the best way to solve problems, they point out what works and what doesn't with a no holds barred approach.

Unlike most CDs pasted into the back of computer books, this book offers one that rivals the book in terms of value. You receive a FREE copy of Woody's Office Power Pack (WOPR) - the #1 enhancement to Office. This software sells for $49.99 but you get it for free here - no strings attached!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Progress though answers easily.......2007-01-06

Once again, Ed and Woody come through for those genuinely interested in exploiting Office functions to their benefit. Hitting topics not referenced in help screens or the MS Knowledge Base, the authors address challenging circumstances with efficient solutions. Learners in many professional roles, from Administrative to Executive relate to Ed and Woody's clearly explained situations and resolutions, which are easy to implement. If you wish to have a top-notch book, which covers all Professional Office Suite applications, this is the book to buy. The front cover is right on target where it states, "The only Office 2003 book you will ever need."

5 out of 5 stars Good for getting new users up to speed.......2004-07-13

We're slowly starting to deploy Office 2003 across out network and this book has been a pretty good general all-in-one type of resource for answering the vast majority of the questions that the users has posed. As well, we've been able to generate several traning sessions based on the content of the book itself using our customized screen shots.

If you need super-deep coverage of a specific application, this is probably not the book for you. If you need a very good overview of the entire suite and what's new and improved, get this book.

A few of the really nice things I liked about this book were the full index and the chapters in the back on macros and VBA...very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2003-10-04

This book has a good overview on all the office programs. If you are looking for in depth information on a certain aspect of office I would look elsewhere. I will be buying the Access book because I need in depth information about about Access and this book does not get that deep. I would still recommend this book to anyone because it is much easier to read than the help included with Office.

Book Description

Special Edition Using Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 captures the reality of designing Web sites with FrontPage today. The emphasis is on how to design professional looking sites, how to keep them current with effective content management techniques, and how to do both while working toward the crucial goals of strong communication and interaction.

Elements exist in each chapter that have been crafted to make your reading experience as easy and useful as possible and also to make this book truly serve as the only reference you need for FrontPage 2003. Everything about the software is covered, with increased emphasis in this edition on advanced topics such as scripting, databases, and the design of site interaction. The creation of effective interaction is featured throughout the book, as are the principles of effective communication.

The "Front and Center" area of each chapter is used to interject the authors' real-world experiences and provide that extra piece of knowledge that will help you see the whole picture. They also attempt to have a little fun in this section, showing the personal side to the product they have spent so much time with.

In addition to some sample files and source code from the book, the CD-ROM contains: supplemental FrontPage software (a $100 value!), Internet marketing service trials from a top Internet marketing firm worth $54.95, several popular FrontPage add-ins, including one from Jimco Add-ins called SnipView available exclusively to readers of this book, and more!

5 out of 5 stars Only book you will need for FrontPage 2003.......2007-07-20

I have found this book to be very useful and easy to use. I have an Information Systems Degree but am new to Front Page. This book is great for newcomers as well as experienced users.

3 out of 5 stars The only FrontPage Book I'll Need? Hah!!!.......2007-05-01

The one thing they forgot to include was a bottle of Advil. What a pain to try to follow. I wanted to learn some cool new tricks to build my own sites but I would have to be a super techno geek to really delve into this book. I guess it's OK for reference but not as a How To book especially for novice-amateur users. I think I am better served just buying a template and tweaking that instead of trying to build from scratch.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2007-03-15

Much information but hard to follow. Sends you to another page for details on a subject, then that page sends you to another (or, in at least 2 cases, sends you back to the original page.

4 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-02-17

Good book, but I really needed something more basic. Not the book's fault, it's my fault.

4 out of 5 stars BED TIME READING.......2006-11-10

If you read this book while in bed, it will put you right to sleep. But if you want a good reference book to assist you with FrontPage, it's great. If it doesn't answer your question it will at least lead you down the right path to get it answered.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful How-To for intermediate to Expert users.......2005-08-30

This book is well-written, covers the basics of intermediate to expert features of excel and is useful as a permanent reference work on the Office 11 series.

A comparable book is Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Step-by-Step. This book is far more detailed and intuitive, though. If you are considering getting an office-worthy reference, I would rate this one over the Microsoft title above

5 out of 5 stars The One Book You'll Need.......2003-12-15

This is the best book written on Excel (I bought two other's before I found this one). This is a one-stop shop for an Excel reference book. Easily scannable, easy to read. I especially love Patrick's Quick Tips -- which provide bite size "how-to's".

One of the most useful features of any reference book is the index. Yet I've seen many Office books with a poor index. Not this one! You'll learn a lot of useful tips and tricks from this book, and you'll be able to find them in the index, next time you need to refresh your memory. Kudos to Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard for giving us a good concise overview of the applications in Microsoft Office 2003 Student/Teacher Edition. I recommend this book for anyone using this popular version of Microsoft Office 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Programming and Feature Description Review.......2005-08-18

I am a retired software designer, now using Outlook for home use. I needed to move my cardfile from an obsolete MSDOS program to Outlook. After exporting my cardfile to a report in a text file, I wrote a VBA program to move it to an Access database. I then needed an Outlook VBA program to merge it with my existing Outlook cardfile and re-import the combined cardfile into Outlook. Ms. Cardoza's book told me what I needed to know - how to write VBA code in Outlook to read and write contacts and how to reference my Access database.

It also helped teaching me the Categories feature and reporting features so I could duplicate the categories and reports that I was used to using in my old MSDOS program.

While not a basic book on programming, Ms. Cardoza describes enough information for someone with some knowledge in Visual Basic for Applications programming to program Outlook. A good book that provided just what I was looking for.

2 out of 5 stars The only Outlook 2003 book you need -- if you don't care to find out the answers to any of your questions.......2005-07-16

I've been using this book for about two months now, and there is a constant theme: I have a question, and this book can't answer it. Sometimes I'm able to figure it out. More often, it turns out that Outlook 2003 simply doesn't support that feature. But even in the latter case, it would be useful for the book to SAY that you can't do it.

I'm not talking about esoteric stuff, either. It's all config stuff like "how can I setup Outlook to check both my local contact list **and** the global list on the server?" (You can't.)

So, this is a good book to tell you how it works, but for 1088 pages, it does a surprisingly poor job of answering day-to-day configuration questions.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference.......2005-01-17

I bought this book as a companion reference with Outlook 2003 that came with a Dell unit, Microsoft's own documentation being sparse.

The idea was to get a clear understanding of the new features in Outlook 2003, the business contacts thing, etc. The book does that very well in a clear and friendly manner. I skimmed though it, got a decent enough overview and then forgot about.

What really endeared the book to me was that I had to help out a friend with a missing address book and after doing a futile search on the web I turned to this book as an afterthought. The answer was right there in a troubleshooting section.

That one time saving help was well worth the price.

I am going to go through the book again, with a new appreciation.

5 out of 5 stars The Outlook 2003 reference!.......2004-07-13

We're deploying Office 2003 right now across our network and knew ahead of time that Outlook 2003 was one of the most changed applications in the suite...especially when paired with Exchange Server 2003 (next year's upgrade). We've been using this book to build upon the introductory material in "Special Edition Using Microsoft Office 2003" to help train our users on the new features and get them to leverage all that Outlook 2003 has to offer.

Ample pictures throughout the text help to reinforce what the author is presenting. As well, like all of the Special Edition Using books this one too has a full index that is actually helpful and fairly easy to locate things in. If have room for only one Outlook 2003 book, this would be my pick.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for new or current Outlook 2003 Users.......2004-03-18

Patricia Cardoza did one fantastic job in the writing of this book on Outlook 2003. I have found it very useful for people that have only used Outlook Express and had stayed away from Outlook due to the fact it felt more complex. Patricia writes in a very neat manner, you almost feel like you are sitting down with her and learning the program as she gives examples of how she uses Outlook 2003 and many of those opened up new ways to use the software. I have gone thru the book twice, first time was skimming it for area's I needed help in and the second time was cover to cover. Both times I got a huge amount of info from and that has made my life with Outlook 2003 much better. Also what I found very interesting and several of my friends commented on this is that I felt like my mind worked somewhat similiar to Patricia as right when I got to a section that I did not understand fully, several questions would pop up in my head as far as how to use these and why and then I discover on the next page, Patricia is addressing those issues. So for me, this is by far the best "real world" book around for Outlook 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Word Resource.......2007-08-14

My work requires me to format documents in many ways on a single page. I must change page orientation frequently, make unusual bulleting, such as '2B),' etc. So far, Bill Camarda's Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Word 2003 has shown me how to do everything I need. Additionally, it comes with a CD that includes itself, plus a lot of aftermarket manufacturer programs (that Microsoft contracts to write their sub-programs) to add features that are extremely useful. And because these are the programmers that write Word, they provide toolbars similar to Word to click on and perform the work. That CD has a home in my laptop case and I use it on the road, while my book is on my shelf at home. Great package: Book and CD. I'd buy it again and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-07

This book is definitely one to buy. I have discovered so much about Word 2003 from reading this book that I would not have learned through using it every day. Comprehensive yet easily understood explanations accompany every topic. I especially like the Tips boxes and am quickly waering out a highlighter on them.

5 out of 5 stars Cheaper than therapy, and more effective.......2006-07-27

I really love this book. I work large documents for a government agency and really strain what Word can do (and what you should do with Word). This book provides intelligent answers to difficult questions far beyond an idiots guide. I'm not an idiot, so why would I use that book? I make extensive use of auto-references, links, styles, and the whole shebang to make editing and revisions a snap. There's also the Section 508 thing so that the final document is ADA compliant.

You're not an idiot, so buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars I come to praise Que, not to bury it.......2004-06-30

I don't have goglobal_2000's experience with XML. (I probably don't have his tenacity either, but let's not get personal.) So I don't know if his criticism is on-point or completely made up. But I think highly enough of Que Publishing's "Using" series in general - and the Word titles in particular - to want to post some praise of its broader merits.

I have perused pretty much every Word instruction manual on the market, and this is the one I'd go with. Most importantly, it is *extremely* comprehensive. Speaking personally, I can figure out how to cut-and-paste for myself. It's programming macros and the other scarily powerful features at the far edges of Microsoft-space that I need my hand held with, and Camarda does it nicely. But as thick as this volume is, it's all muscle - no bad jokes, no time wasting.

2 out of 5 stars Rewrite Chapter 25.......2004-01-28

As a technical writer, I've been authoring XML, XML Schema, and XSL documents for several years. A new project required me to test the capabilities of XML in Word 2003 so I purchased Using Microsoft Office Word 2003. After spending several days working through Chapter 25 I felt like I had climbed Mt. Everest with a 50 pound boulder in my backpack. Here are a few specific examples that led to my poor rating.

The schema example on pages 844-846 should have been included on the CD but no, I had to create a text file and type all the code from scratch.

On page 856, the author congratulates you for constructing your first XML data structure and document but then refers you to another section of the chapter that discusses various ways to save an XML file in Word. You're left on your own to play a save as guessing game. (It's true that you can save an XML file in WordML format but the code is so scary that you'll probably have nightmares after seeing it.)

On page 858, you are instructed to open a document that doesn't exist. On page 866 you're back to the task of writing more code. This time however, you create an XSL file from scratch. The first step asks you to "Use File, Save As to create a new XML file with data only." I don't think it would ever occur to me to use that approach to create a new file in any application. The next step states "Create an XSLT transformation file (.xsl) with the following code." The XSL code contains several namespaces that do not exist in the XML schema. Also, there is a duplication error in the xsl:value-of select statement. Word does not allow you to save a file with an .xsl extension so I had to create the file in an XML editor. If it weren't for my tenacity and experience with XML, I would have given up after the first hour.

I can see why the publisher's disclaimer states that the information provided is on an "as is" basis.
