Book Description

As customers and shareholders demand better products faster, more pressure is felt by technical professionals to develop it now and develop it right the first time. Considered the breakthrough design and inventive problem-solving approach of the past 100 years, TRIZ is a unique, algorithmic approach to problem solving that allows engineers, planners and managers to formulate the best possible solutions for technical systems problems and predict future product needs based on technology evolution and competitive advantages. Developed in Russia, the popularity of TRIZ is now spreading to Europe, the United States, and Japan, but until now no comprehensive, comprehensible treatment of the topic has been available in English. Simplified TRIZ: New Problem Solving Applications for Engineers and Manufacturing Professionals not only demystifies TRIZ, but it also shows how it can be used in new ways to enhance Six Sigma, Constraints Management, Supply Chain Management, QFD, and Taguchi methods to gain innovative and technological competitive advantages. This practical how-to guide teaches you how to solve problems creatively, and more importantly, shows you how to find and foresee the evolution of problems in the future. It provides many exercises, worksheets, and tables to further illustrate the concepts of this multinational method. Implement the same problem-solving tool that many Fortune 500 companies are already using with Simplified TRIZ.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Simplistic description - poorly written.......2006-10-05

The method itself is extremely interesting, unfortunately the authors repeat the same examples over and over again. Very annoying. The style borders on boring. I would recommend definitely reading the book from Savransky as a much better example of TRIZ

5 out of 5 stars THE textbook for basic TRIZ education.......2005-10-27

Simplified TRIZ provides the theoretical foundation for the beginner to learn the practical application of the TRIZ methodology. Domb and Rantanen present a cohesive and structured breakdown of the basic components of TRIZ: the Ideal Final Result and Ideality, Contradiction Theory, Resources, and the Patterns of Evolution. The book's importance is such that I use it as a supporting text for my basic TRIZ curriculum. The students find it easy to understand as well as demonstrative enough to teach application.

Dr. Domb's credibility (international TRIZ evangelist and editor of the TRIZ Journal, www.triz-journal.com) in the quality and innovation communities is such that this book MUST be studied if you are serious about TRIZ.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-08-02

I found the book very interesting, even if I was not able to apply it to real problems we face yet.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant model of problem solving.......2003-07-05

Using a perfect model, this books first introduces characteristics of GOOD solutions, then step by step, it describes triz problem solving tools (and strategy development tools as well) all integrated into each other.
As stated in the title, it's a simplified book so you can't find some advanced tools like su-field modeling in it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook .......2007-09-19

I bought Office 2003 Simplified for my college class. I found it to be extremely helpful with refreshing my memory on Excel. Gives step by step instructions on how to navigate through the office programs. I would definitely recommend the book to those who need a refresher course on the programs as well as anyone who is new or computer illiterate.

5 out of 5 stars Good Study Material..........2007-09-19

This material was perfect for my computer class, it has been one of the best books I have seen that actually breaks down Microsoft Office for everyone. It does not only tell you how to do it, but instead shows you. Awsome graphics, great way to get to know the programs we use everyday better.

5 out of 5 stars Education.......2007-05-15

I purchased this textbook for my wife, even though she has experience with Office she learned a few new things. Know my son is starting to use it for his education. My rating is based on the images and simplicity of explanation.

Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars A book of knowledge.......2007-01-04

This is the manual that SHOULD have come with Office 2003. It gets to the point quickly and easily. Makes learning all of the many many functions of Office 2003 much easier. In just the first 3 chapters I picked up several "new" hints to make my work with Office 2003 much easier. A MUST for all Office users.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Colorful, Concise, and Easy to Follow.......2006-08-10

This single volume boasts of being a simplified approach to learning the basics of Word 2003, and it lives up to expectations. All of the instructions give actual "snapshots" of the computer screen and computer menus to show how to execute various commands. This book gives the basics of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Publisher.

3 out of 5 stars not really simple.......2007-07-21

I really have not found this book helpful. At least not for the things I most need. There is nothing in the index for such items as columns, labels, clip art, etc. Maybe they are mentioned somewhere in the book but I certainly could not find them. Easier and cheaper to click on the question mark at the top of the screen and enter what you need help with.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!.......2007-05-07

The Vista Simplified Is absolutely terrific!! It gives pictured illustrations, with step by step of what to do, by each illustraton, in very simplified wording and I just love this book!! It is a very MUST HAVE BOOK, for those folks who are not computer literate, like me. One can learn how to do just any task, by following the easy, easy instructions this book offers! I LOVE IT!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Never will put it down.......2007-04-01

Super easy format to read. Has many pictures and diagrams that are easier to understand than reading a whole page. Explains everything in plain english. Easy to follow along with. Each page is in full color, and the pictures are whimsical and fun ( unlike the internet for dummies which is in black and white which is so boring). The pictures are funny. Explains everything including:

A brief description on how to set up a website

The History of the internet

how to do research on the internet

how to set up an e-mail address

how to shop online, and why prices are usually lower ( like Amazon!!!)

how the internet works

how to join chatrooms

and how to connect to the internet if you haven't already ( although I guess I shouldn't have mentioned that because if you haven't why would you be on amazon)

Explains so much more!!! Leave right next to your computer because you will always be looking at it!!!

5 out of 5 stars For moms and dads and anyone else new to the Web.......2001-12-04

Without a doubt, one of the best ways for non-technical folks to learn about the web and the internet. I'm personally opposed to labeling anyone unfamiliar with computers, a dummy. This book teaches by using mostly graphic imagery which clearly illustrates the concepts being discussed. A definate add-on for anyone getting, or giving a new computer, Mac or PC.

If you sell on ebay, you should read this. It's a quick, easy read and one you should keep handy for a reference. Good for buyers too. One of the best for ebay sellers.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and filled with great tips!.......2005-10-29

I didnt realize how many facets there were to ebay until I picked up this book. For those of you who have an interest in selling on ebay but dont even know how or where to begin, this is a great starter book to learn the market, learn the inside and out of the website and learn how to get started! The layout is simple and there are topics covered which greatly simplify the overwhelming amount of information that is out there regarding buying and selling on ebay. This book is a must if you are serious about starting an online ebay business!

5 out of 5 stars Finally an eBay Book that is Actually Useful!!!!.......2004-08-10

Lets face it...most of those "helpful" eBay books are meant to make money for the author...nothing more. This book is an amazing contrast! The author actually knows what she is talking about. I am an old eBay pro but I have found this book to be helpful. And the beauty of this book is that it is organized in degrees of "difficulty". From easy to understand instructions for the newbie to more sopisticated info for the "pro". Take it from me, this book is worth the $$. Buy it and make more $$ on eBay!

5 out of 5 stars Experienced E-Bay Trading Assistant LOVES IT!!!.......2004-06-02

Yesterday, I picked this book up along with 5-6 other eBay books at my local bookstore. I started reading this book and I couldn't put it down! I spent 3 hours reading & taking notes, the other books couldn't even begin to compare! I just had to have it! It initially caught my eye, because it was so well formated with great graphics and an awesome layout, but it held my interest because it was chock full of great ideas and took me through every possible thing I could want to do with Ebay step by step! A beginner could pick it up and use it just as well as someone like me who has been using eBay for over 5 years. There is information for everyone! Today I used the information that I acquired from the book and have already saved several hours of work! I am so enthralled by this author that I have signed up for her monthly newsletter and am purchasing another book from her today. BUY THIS BOOK, you will not be disappointed! At only $13.99, it's a steal. I paid $19.99 and I have gotten 20 times my monies worth already!

    Book Description

QuickBooks® Pro 2006: Simplified is an instructional learning resource. This text has been designed to respond to the growing trend toward adopting Windows applications and computerizing accounting systems. As a result of this trend, the text provides training using Windows® XP and the popular QuickBooks® Pro 2006 accounting program. The text was written using Windows XP and QuickBooks® Pro 2006 but may be used with Windows 2000 and QuickBooks® Basic or Premier versions.

Throughout the text, students use a fictitious company that is a combination service/merchandising business and is a sole proprietorship. The chapters encompass a complete business cycle and enable students to receive hands-on training in the use of QuickBooks® Pro 2006 within each chapter. At the end of every chapter, the concepts and applications learned are reinforced by the completion of true/false, multiple-choice, fill-in, and essay questions plus an application problem using a different fictitious service/merchandising company. The final chapter allows the students to create a company for use in QuickBooks. There is one practice set in the text that utilizes all the major concepts and transactions presented within the entire textbook.

The text introduces students to the computer, Windows, and QuickBooks accounting for a service business/merchandising business, payroll, and company setup for QuickBooks. The appendix reviews Windows, disk duplication; back up files, and file restoration, downloading a trial version of the software, and downloading company files from www.prenhall.com/compaccounting.

I would say that this is written for an advanced beginner in that you should be comfortable with the tools and getting around the menus. I have only been working with digital photography for a year and a half and installed photoshop cs2 about 8 months ago..This book will help you so much if you just complete the excercises (examples) starting at the beginnning..It's loaded with tips for the beginner.. I highly recommend it...

I learned a lot with this book. Exremely easy to follow instructions, and great tips!

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2007-04-04

I purchased this book soon after I acquired a "beginners guide" to Photoshop CS2. Like most people, I wanted to apply some PS techniques to my images straight away. The "Top 100" tricks includes the majority of techniques I require and actually helps to understand the theory of the more formal beginners guide. This book does not assume that the reader knows all the terms and tools and by following the very clearly illustrated step by step instructions, even newbies to PS can achieve startling results. I've scouted round bookshops looking at the numerous PS CS2 publications - this is as good as any and better than most.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent addition!.......2007-03-12

As a high school digital photography teacher I have found this book an excellent addition to my photoshop book collection. It is very easy for anyone to follow and we have great use from the five copies I purchased.

    3 out of 5 stars take a real class.......2007-06-03

you need to take a real class before you get into cisco networking.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview for Business/IT directors.......2006-11-12

This is a great book for the right person. Real techies will be displeased with it, as it is not a technical manual for Cisco products.

It is, however, a great book for overviewing current networking products, services and potential uses by business and IT directors.

The book highlights the current popular uses for networking beyond connecting your computer to your printer. The book includes VoIP, IP conferencing, e-learning and quite a bit more.

If you are a business manager and wondering what the network might do for you OR you are an IT manager and trying to expand your department's uses then this book is a great place to start.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a novice, but not as your only reference........2003-11-14

Everything about Cisco Networking Simplified screams accessibility: the landscape layout, the softback cover, the illustrations drawn without a ruler that literally take the sharp edges off of computers, servers, and switches (router icons, fortunately, are already round). A note on the cover indicates for the curious that the book is in full color. Each short chapter is broken into "at-a-glance" subsections on each topic, headed "Why Should I Care?" and "What Are the Problems to Solve?"

This book is clearly written for two types of people: executives from a non-technical background who get flustered when speaking to network engineers, and networking novices looking for a friendly introduction to the subject before they begin serious study for, say, the CCNA.

When I first opened Cisco Networking Simplified, I was a bit put off by the intensity with which I felt the authors and illustrator were trying to convince me just how down-to-Earth they are. The organization of the book is such that it's so easy to flip through, the pithy explanations so easy to digest, that one might grow quickly suspicious that here is a book designed more to make the reader feel at ease than to actually teach her anything.

But one would be wrong. CNS is a good basic reference book. It's short because it sticks to the essentials. It's weirdly-inked illustrations do make the concepts clearer. And the friendly tone never gets smarmy. On the contrary, Maggiora and Doherty anticipate a newcomer's reaction to the material well enough to know when to be terse, and when to insert whimsical asides. The unofficial eighth (political) and ninth (technical religion) layers of the OSI model and the use of ISDN to mean It Still Does Nothing are fun tidbits, well-placed, and perhaps even useful as mnemonic devices. The paragraph explaining that "routers switch and switches route," is appropriately illustrated with two people scratching their heads. That the authors make room for "Algorhyme," Radia Perlman's poem describing the Spanning Tree Algorhythm (which she also wrote), shows that they know the difference between cute and distracting, and cute and relevant.

There are some problems, though. For example, the discussion of classful addresses is outdated. The class A, B, and C system is presented as the solution to a problem caused by unanticipated Internet growth. That may have once been true, but now the time when the class system was itself perceived as the next wave of that problem has already come and gone (gone, because outside isolated or masqueraded networks, class addressing has been replaced with CIDR). An executive who reads this book and then asks his engineers whether the company has been assigned a class A, B, or C address isn't going to get a lot of respect. A more serious problem is the confusing definition of the term DCE. On page 209, it's "data circuit-terminating device." On page 210, it's "data communications equipment." The first definition is more popular according to a google search, but makes less sense (where does the "E" come from?). Perhaps both definitions are somehow valid, but in a book like this, it shouldn't be the reader's job to figure out which one. And IDSN gets two detailed pages with illustrations, while the more popular (in the U.S.) DSL gets little more than a paragraph.

Also, to call this book Cisco Networking Simplified is not really accurate. A better title might have been: Cisco Presents: Networking Simplified. Cisco has no special claim to, say, IP addressing, which is discussed in some detail. Of course, to write a basic networking book without discussing IP would be silly, and Cisco makes a lot of products that deal with IP addressing. But so do a lot of other companies.

In short, I recommend this book (three of five stars), but with caveats. Technically-minded people who already have some experience in the networking field will probably be put off by the coloring book look and feel (but then, it wasn't written for them). Novices who are reading this book as the first step on their way to certification may find that, ironically, it provides much more information on certain subjects (voice-over IP, for example) than may be sought. It's hard to imagine anyone reading this book straight through of their own volition. It's a beginner's reference. If you're confused by a topic as it's dealt with in another networking book, you can be fairly sure that if CNS covers it, then CNS contains the simplest explanation of that topic that you're likely to find.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to your IT library..........2003-11-04

Cisco Networking Simplified, published by Cisco Press, ISBN# 1587200740, Pages=288, Paperback, no CD-ROM included

When most folks hear the word Cisco, the first thoughts that come to mind are routers and the Internet. But what this book does is introduce you to so much more. You'll see that Cisco networking as a whole includes a vast array of hardware, software, telecommunications gear, protocols, and cutting edge technologies. Authors Paul Maggiora (CCIE, a former Cisco employee) and Jim Doherty (a current Cisco marketing manager) bring Cisco networking direct to you with an illustrated approach to learning a myriad of internetworking topics. If you're the type of person who prefers a visual approach to learning, the colorful illustrations and easy-to-understand diagrams should make you feel right at home.

Before obtaining this book, the question I had was "what does this book have to offer?" As I found out, a little bit of everything. For example; are you interested in learning more about optical networking, ATM, broadband networking, or how frame-relay works? Are you interested in network security, hackers, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems? Perhaps you'd like to understand what being a network administrator is like with respect to bandwidth monitoring, routing, switching, or high-availability networking? Other topics of interest include: explanations of how information is moved along that "information superhighway" we've all heard about, what Storage Area Networking is, how you can create networks without wires, and why your organization may be utilizing VPN's or MPLS. You'll find the answers to these questions and hundreds more in this book.

I believe the target audience for this book is "rookie" technical or help-desk staff that have some experience with computer networking, although those readers who are completely new to this area of computing shouldn't be "bulldozed-over" with tons of technical jargon. Seasoned IT professionals shouldn't pass this book up as being too easy either, because we all need a good refresher course on the basics from time-to-time, and that's the niche that this book fulfills.

A common complaint among IT professionals is that many books written nowadays are filled with "real-life" situations the author has experienced. I find that many of these situations aren't useful to me, and find myself rather distracted from understanding the books intended content. "We just want the facts" is what many technicians and networking professionals are saying. Thankfully, this book gives you nothing but the facts accompanied by clear and concise explanations.

The only criticisms I have of the book are that it didn't contain specific references to additional information and that it wasn't bigger! It was so easy to read and understand that when I finished studying it I thought, "Well what about this technology, what about that protocol, where's the best place to go for more info?" Published in June 2003, I've found it contains many of the hottest topics out there today including IPv6, ECDN (Educational Content Delivery Network), IP convergence (voice+video+data), VoIP (voice over data networks), disaster recovery planning, and web content caching - just to name a few. Overall, I was very pleased with the books contents and the formatting of the text and illustrations made for excellent knowledge retention. I've seen that the authors have previously released other networking titles, so you may want to check them out if you're looking for additional technical details on topics covered/not-covered in this book.

Cisco Networking Simplified won't prepare you for any Cisco networking certification tests, but you know what? I've always said that you can't comprehend advanced networking functions and methodologies if you don't have a clear understanding of the basics and fundamentals. This book is a good starting point.

On a rating scale of 1-5 (worst-best), I'd give this book a 5. I truly believe that the very reasonable cost of this book will be some of the best money (under $30.00) you'll ever spend on an addition to your IT library bookshelf.

Disclaimer: This is an honest review and I do not benefit from it in any manner.

4 out of 5 stars An easy read.......2003-10-08

A really easy read. A little like reading a comic book on networking - Except this comic doesn't shy away from touching complex concepts. Pretty extensive in its coverage of the applications of networking.

5 out of 5 stars My experience with Vista Simplified & The manual called the missing manual.......2007-10-02

I purchased "Vista Simplified",I also purchased "Vista Manual"(The missing manual).
Vista simplified is an extremely good instruction book.It introduced me to Vista and how to use Vista. It contained information to me that is not obvious unless you know how to find it.

The "Missing Manual" Gives a more detailed
introduction to Vista. It is very inforamtive and explains everything in plain language. It includes descriptive information
that is easy to follow. It is also a good reference book
    if one gets into trouble

    I highly recommend both books.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-07-07

This is one of the finest instructional books I have ever come across. The step-by-step instructions are very clearly written and illustrated. There is no guess-work required regarding the interpretation of the instructions. Each task is preceded by an informative narrative explaining its' purpose and effect. Every command is numbered, with a corresponding number highlighted in relavent screen shots to show exactly how to perform the task. Tips, recommendations, cautions and other options are also included after most tasks. Instructions on removal to return you to the previous configuration are also prevalent. Difficulty levels are assigned. There is much more detail here that is present in most Vista manuals. The pages are glossy and in color. I can't think of a single recommendation to improve this book and shall consider other books in this series. Excellent!
