No peer........2005-08-14
I use(d) this book as the basis towards my WIN2K MCDBA...It is superior to anything out there including Microsoft's Official MCSE [Exam 70-228] SQL Server 2000 SA Training Kit... includes everything one needs assuming one immerses oneself in the book from Day 1 through Day 21 in addition to Day 22 (SQL Server Analysis Services (OLAP)) and Day 23 (English Query). It is both a superior reference book and programmer's guide. After purchasing Microsoft's official references I found myself repeatedly (frustrated by their shortcomings and referring back to this particular SAMS text). Enough cannot be said about this book.
I liked the book.......2005-06-22
The book was ok. It has taught me a lot. However, it is not without its easily seen errors.
1) Some concepts are not expounded on to make sure a newcomer or complete idiot thoroughly understands what is said. Some sentences can be so concise that it can cause you to take a word for granted (if you aren't paying extra attention) which could lead to complete confusion. thus, if there are no supporting sentences you can be completely lost. It also uses terms without explaining them or maybe expects you to know terms that a newcomer would not know. Some concepts are just not explained clearly period.
2) Some of the exercises use obsolete code. It is as if the person who wrote the chapter didn't write the exercise.
So if you need a book. Yes, buy this book. Hearing the negative comments can distract but at the same time only good comments can cause a person to wonder if something is wrong with him. The book DOES have errors! Point Blank! Some are very noticeable. Few are frustrating. My most frustrating experience so far has been chapter 5. I had to read ch 6 to understand 5 better. But you will learn a lot and the book's exercises do a good job in making sure you understand what was covered. My point is only that if something seems strange like the exercises on chapter 5 (also the exact same, word for word as exercises for ch 6, probably a mistake) it is probably the book and not you. The answers for chap 5 exercises are indeed obsolete (question 1 anyway).
Overall, the book makes learning this stuff very easy.
GREAT Book.......2005-05-26
I have a LOT of access experience and wanted to move to SQL Server.
This is a great beginner book for those with a little knowledge of SQL and a lot of knowledge of relational databases.
Great chapters on SQL usage.
GET THIS BOOK!!
Excellent exam prep.......2005-05-22
I found this book excellent prep for the MCP exam (70-229). The discussions on deadlocks, indexing, transactions, and security (specifically, application roles and ownership chains) were definitely the difference in my passing the exam.
The authors do a very good job of explaining WHY you would want to do something, not just HOW.
The only negative thing for me was the frequent references to how things used to work in SQL 7.0, 6.5 and earlier.
A very good book if you're the right audience.......2004-10-29
This is a very good book for the newcomer to SQL Server, particularly for those who have little experience with other databases.
It addresses various topics that are just enough to get you started on being able to get some work done with SQL Server and know what else you need to learn. Strange as it may sound, IMHO, discovering what you don't know is a valuable endeavour. Sure, it could've gone into a lot more detail on the query optimizer or how lock escalation really works, etc... but really, where do you draw the line? There's no good place that will please everyone. This book did a decent job.
This is not the book to make you an expert. In fact, it won't even make you an "intermediate" if there's such a state. It introduces enough to get you going. If you find yourself asking "well, what about this?" or "ok, you showed one way to use stored procedures, what if I wanted to ....", then the book has done a good job. If you have no questions or don't know what to ask, then it's failed.
As for the readers/reviewers who slammed the book for not making them experts, really, what were you expecting? You won't even know the ins and outs of installing Oracle or DB2 in 21 days much less get into any useful state (I've been an Oracle DBA for 7 years and DB2 for about 2 years, I know a thing or two about them).
If you are an experienced database administrator or developer on another database, this book is probably kinda slow for you and certainly will not contain the depth that you're probably seeking. For this audience, I'd recommend Inside SQL Server by Kalen Delaney. It's not all there but it's a great start.

Very Helpful.......2005-05-13
I used this book a few years ago when I began learning SQL. The book is pretty good. It helped me learn and understand sql. The book even talks about PL/SQL and Transact-SQL. Read it and pay close attention to the statements and you will get most of it. If you can download an oracle database software for free, install it annd practice what you are learning from the book. Practic helped me a lot to learn quickly.
Beginners beware of typos.......2005-03-18
This is a good book for beginners but also gets you on the path to more advanced SQL programming. However, beginners beware: I think I found a programming typo in nearly every chapter of the book. The most glaring to me was in Day 14 (p. 340) when a column named "NEW_TOTAL" was referenced in view LATE_PAYMENT (created from table BILLS). BILLS has an AMOUNT field but no NEW_TOTAL field. I have over 20 years programming experience and I had to disregard this entire example. I fear beginners will miss these types of mistakes. If this is one of the better books available (as stated by a previous reviewer), then I'm not sure what book to buy. No typos should exist in a book designed to teach programming.
Great for beginners, lacks cd-rom and typos.......2003-01-21
Sams Teach Yourself SQL 4th ed. is a great book for the beginner. It explains (otherwise complicated) concepts in normal everyday language.
What I don't like about this book is that the chapter 'Day 6' is pretty brief; the authors could have spent a lot more time explaining this function, especially since this is the most commonly used funtion in sql. I've also noticed numerous typos. For example, on p 185, the book asks you to create a table and name it "part", but when they give examples they use the name "parts" to refer to the same table (hmm...perhaps I should be directing this to the publishers). And the third aspect of this book that I dislike is the fact that there is no CD-rom. It would have helped alot and saved me a lot of time the writers included all of the example tables on a CD-rom, rather than having the reader type out all of the codes himself/herself.

Too many errors!!.......2005-12-29
At least half of the code examples I tried would not run. It is really frustrating to have a training guide where you cannot trust any of the examples to be coded correctly. I am amazed anyone would give this book a positive rating.
2 Authors -- one good, one really, really bad.......2001-09-20
After reading the first 3 chapters of this book, I was thinking to myself "Wow! This book is great". However, moving on to chapter 4, it felt like a bus fell on me. I read the next few chapters in stunned amazement, wondering what happened, and then I discovered it -- the first three chapters had been written by a different author than the current chapters that I was struggling through.
Where the first chapters, written by Jonathan Gennick, had pertinent, precise examples and a good development of the subject matter, the subsequent chapters (4-9), written by Tom Luers, contained error after error with poor development of the subject matter. The naming of variables was confused and the case of variables and keywords changed from example to example (and even within the same example!).
When I started reading this book, I typed all the examples into Personal Oracle to experiment along with the text. In addition, I placed small "sticky" notes on each page where I encountered an error in the text. I found only a few in the first few chapters. However, after hitting chapter 4, I found myself putting notes on at least every other page, and sometimes multiple notes on a single page! After struggling through several chapters of Luers' writing, I could no longer bring myself to type in the examples -- actually, some of the examples were based on tables that had not even been covered yet in the text, making it impossible to try them. Also, because of the huge number of errors, I stopped adding "sticky" notes, lest I run out of my supply.
Sadly, I cannot recommend this book (even though I found the chapters written by Gennick to be very good). If you do buy this book, read chapters 1-3, 10-13, 16-17, and 20-21, and skip the rest.
My final thoughts: I cannot believe that a publisher would sell a book with such an amazing number of errors, or that such a solid technical author would partner with such an incapable one.
An excellent book for beginners to learn PL/SQL.......2001-05-14
I am a professional Accountant/ Auditor (CPA from USA) and heading finance division in a corporate, with a turnover over $ 2 billion. As our organization is undergoing ERP and I have been made as Implementation Committee member from the client side, I have been looking into Oracle. I don't have any knowledge of any programming language except that I am an extensive good user. In order to interact effectively and out of curiosity, I decided to learn Oracle 8i (SQL and PL/ SQL) and Developer 2K. I attended a fortnight training session given to our EDP guys. As the training was meant for those guys who are already in the field, it was not effective upon me and I could not grasp much. Further I was hesitant to ask my doubts, since otherwise it would slower the pace of the training. I purchased various books from Oracle Press but I found the reading was cumbersome, since it had not been built on a good foundation for lay guys like me. In a hard way, I learnt SQL from the training, books and well-learnt friends and was thorough with that, while I was finding PL/SQL as difficult to learn. I came across this book when perusing thru a bookshop. I liked the way it has been organized. It is 21 days course material with 3 to 5 hours each day and built nicely from day 1. In the week I, one learns basics of PL/SQL and building blocks, in week II, he/ she will learn some of the more advanced features and will also learn how to use PL/SQL in conjunction with a data base. In the final week, Oracle's built in packages have been taught. The book is meant for absolute beginners like me (who have some adequate knowledge of SQL). I have been transformed into a person who has a fairly good knowledge of PL/SQL, after fully going thru the book I am able to understand what sort of codes are written by my Oracle friends and consultants. My colleagues and bosses are admiring my PL/SQL knowledge. Often now I have been placed in the Interview committee to select staff for EDP department along with EDP guys and I have been always asking questions from the Q & A, Quiz, exercises material from this book. Probably one of the coming days, I may even head our EDP department, who knows? Over all, this book is excellent for beginners for learning PL/SQL.
Good for CompSci majors considering an OCP.......2000-10-19
I generally agree with the other reviewers on this book - despite some errors, it is a solid set of PL/SQL lessons. Great results can be produced by using the book as designed (download a copy of Personal Oracle, and spend three hours a day hacking the &@:=#! out of it). However, these favorable reviews can be misleading, as they lack a "Who is this book for?" section. Unlike many "Teach Yourself" titles, this is not good reading for the absolute novice. To get the most from this book, you should have:
1. Functional and theoretical knowledge of at least one high-level programming language.
2. A good understanding of database theory and terminology.
3. Some experience with SQL (and ideally with Oracle, but if you can make Access do tricks, you'll be fine).
4. Three weeks off. ;-)
Overall, an excellent text.......2000-09-17
This is a great beginners book for pl/sql syntax, and it is also useful as a quick reference. I found it very helpful when doing advanced pl/sql as well. Overall, an excellent text.

Transact-SQL in 21 days.......2007-01-15
This book is good for beginner and advanced SQL Server user. The lessons are explained clearly and easy to understand.
Challenging and a Wealth of Information.......2004-04-25
I knew only how to pass a SELECT * statement before obtaining this book. I have since taken a job writing code from what I learned from this book. Not only is their a wealth of information, but the exercises challenge the reader to think "outside the box" and create code using the information learned in the chapter. I would have given this book 5 stars but sections like views were a bit weak. After reading this book definitely pick up The Guru's Guide to Transact SQL.
Excellent tutorial and reference.......2003-10-30
As a programmer with over 10 years experience I have found this book to be comprehensive and concise. There are many useful examples many of which have helped me solve problems on the job.
Lowell Mauer explains things very well.
This is my main reference book it has paid for itself many times over. I highly recommend it.
GREAT for the layperson! :-).......2002-01-26
As a relatively new database administrator with no SQL experience, this book was EXACTLY what I needed. It is written in an easy-to-read and easily comprehended style. It takes me everywhere I need to go with confidence that the code I now write will perform the necessary functions...and perform them efficiently and effectively. Thank you, Sam!

One of the best out of collection of bad books.......2000-08-11
If you are starting out in Oracle PL/SQL, this book and their online help HTML/PDF is the only source you are going to need. All other books out in the bookshelves are garbage. This is one of the best books out of shelf-full of bad books on PL/SQL. Index on the back of the book is incomplete to say the least. I believe any good programming book should have extensive index, since nobody has the time to go through the whole book, and we need to refer to index for different things as we work on a project. So far, of all the books, and I have a collection now, this book is the most comprehensive book, if you can find what page to look.
Very well done.......1999-07-06
I've found this book very helpfu
Good for starters.......1999-06-25
If you're totally new to pl/sql programming, this is a good book. The explainations are simple and easier to understand than other books that I assume expects you to have some experience. This book gives you some good samples for starters but after finishing this book, I recommend you get a more hardcore book. You could follow the next book you buy with ease and learn a little more. One problem is that this book mentions things that are covered in later chapters, so you might have to go back to the index and jump around a litte (other books do this butthey do it more often).
disappointing.......1999-04-15
For the novice user, chapters 1 through 8 give a good description of the language. I was able to understand how the language works and do the exercises. From chapter 9 until the end, I guess the authors assume that the debugging chapter was enough to start debugging their examples. Even some the examples on the CD-ROM did not execute.
Week 3 is the worst if you do not have the Oracle software listed in chapter 1, but it is worth the read. At least you can impress the interviewer at your next interview.
If you want to learn a little about Oracle and have some Visual Basic experience, try Nick Snowden's Oracle with Visual Basic. It is mainly SQL, but I got a better view of how Oracle operates.
I used the 21-Day Book for Visual Basic 5 and learned a lot (first time I had ever used VB). I was expecting the same level of learning from this book and was highly disappointed.
As for a good PL/SQL book, I am still looking.
good book for a beginner.......1998-09-28
I started learning pl/sql a couple of weeks ago. I am halfway through the book(i am not doing a chapter a day:). I find it very easy to comprehend ,even by a novice. I think it is a really good start if you know some sql. There are a few small flaws(typo errors) which are no problem.

Great starter book on MySql.......2005-07-17
This is the best starter book on MySql that I've read and I've read quite a few. Start with this one.
A few crayons short of a full box..........2005-05-19
Altogether, this book is pretty helpful. It doesn't go into much details on the commands, or show you in details how to use some of the methods covered... but this is where actual experience comes into play.
The only reason I'm really docking this book down to 3 of 5 stars is because of some of the technical errors... they're down right confusing!
One part says (this is a literal quote!):
SELECT 1 = 0 returns 0.
SELECT 1 = 0 returns 1.
And another part about regular expressions was incorrect (and down right hard to read):
[^0-9] matches any string lacking a non-numeric character.
Also, the sections that talk about integration into PHP, Perl, and C are EXTREMELY inadequate and it may have been better if the author hadn't even tried to go into such detail as he did. He tried much too hard to give the reader an introduction to PHP. The other two, Perl and C, he did a good job with: he explained what to do and moved on.
An Excellent Primer and More.......2003-07-21
The book is aimed at the beginner/intermediate level, which I think is about right. Readers at both levels would benefit significantly from this well written and easily read volume.
Each chapter gives you a `kick start' in that aspect of MySQL starting at a basic level and progressing to a stage where you have a very useful knowledge.
The chapters on Querying Data for example take you to a point where you (as an intermediate user) could do most everyday queries.
This is achieved by using straightforward examples with carefully graded and well explained steps. I never felt too pushed nor felt I was being patronised - quite an achievement.
What I particularly liked were the chapters on interfacing with the real world.
The chapter on PHP does not pretend to be a primer on PHP but does introduce the few functions in PHP which allow you to write to and query a MySQL database, retrieve the results and present them to the rest of your PHP code - just what a PHP coder needs from a book on MySQL. This is repeated for those who need to interface with C and PERL.
I would unreservedly recommend this book to anyone starting out in MySQL.
Check examples please........2003-05-02
It was missing alot of information in the area of new users and granting privileges. Quotations marks were left out of key commands to grant privileges and there are limits...There were misspellings of words. The book should have gone through spellcheck and a thorough test of examples.
I would rate this book lower but I admit, it helped me get started. If I didn't have teaching and other data processing experience I would be bald trying to follow this book.

"Teach Yourself in 21 Days" should imply to most that this isn't the book that is going to go over every topic in fine detail. You aren't going to become a SQL genius in 21 days, anyway. It gives a good broad range of topics. But also, if you don't know what SQL is or haven't seen a little, then you probably won't understand what you are learning. The samples and the code in this book seemed to work for me. I mostly use it as a reference to look up the correct syntax for code I don't use all the time.
A very solid grouding in SQL.......2002-04-05
It's an excellent book but most readers may need some sql knowledge before reading this book. This book is a very good source and reference for creating queries within application like MsAccess. It's also an OK source for creating queries in SQL Server or Oracle, but not for stored procedure. Their no reference or text on stored procedures within this book.
If the book came with a CD I would of rated this book more than 4 stars.
good for computer users medium to advanced.......2000-01-17
For the price you gain a lot of knowledge in a short amount of time. 21 days or less it's easy to read thru a chapter or 3 and only spend an hour doing it. I wouldn't turn anyone away from this book, but a Novice or low level user should be aware that they may need to re-read a chapter more then once.
it's a good book. covers a lot of information in a basic fashion with simple examples.
Great if you understand some programming or basic Database concepts and you just want to get up to speed on some more advanced topics. Could also be good for novice users looking to start learning about SQL, I just think some of the examples and explanations might be a little hard for someone who's never used databases before. But, if they read each chapter twice if they feel like they are missing something, I think they will be fine and be happy with this book.
Teach yourself SQL in 21 Days.......1999-08-25
SQL is a powerful Language to know and also to understand how to managing database, i bought a book called teach yourself SQL in 21 days, it is a great book to learn and how to use it. But, the only thing is, it needed a CD that come with the book, this way we can just use it like other books that with SQL scripts and sample tables or a pre-compiler so and so..or by creating many different table's from day 1,and using the same tables sample from day 1 and work all the way within the whole book.just like the same one (teach yourself in 24 hours).
A blah intro book, and a very poor refference.......1999-04-27
For a start-from-scratch introduction to SQL, this book is paced OK and is pretty approachable. I woudn't recommend it to anyone past the low novice level, though. Many subjects are dealt with far too lightly and often very uneven. "DISTINCT" is mentioned, for instance, in the Common Error section and in one other note area, but I didn't find an actual definition anywhere. This might be due to the index, which seemed half-hearted at best. This complicates learning, in that it's dificult to cross-refference and build on the lessons. As for using the book once the lessons have been run through, forget it. This book is pretty much worthless as a refference. Since this is a teaching book, I guess I shouldn't harp too much on it's value for ongoing refference. However, I doubt anyone buys a book with the intention of throwing it away after one read-through. There are better options out there.

Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 in 21 Days introduces you to every aspect of Microsoft's flagship back-end database engine. Organized with a FAQ-like summary at the end of every chapter, the book familiarizes you with all the features and even brings you up to expert level on a few of them.
Focusing on SQL Server Standard Edition, authors Waymire and Sawtell explain how to install the software under Windows NT Server 4. After a quick synopsis of the tools and utilities on the SQL Server CD-ROM, the authors walk you through the process of creating databases (and related entities) and establishing accounts for the people and processes that will access them.
The authors place considerable emphasis on security, showing you exactly how to set up user logins and access permissions. They also include information on preparing for and recovering from disasters, RAID schemes, backup routines, and restoration of backed-up data. The book wraps up by showing you how to use SQL Server's programming abilities to create customized applications. On top of their coverage of triggers and stored procedures--and of Structured Query Language (SQL) generally--the authors include a good tutorial on the fundamentals of Transact-SQL programming. There's also information on automating administrative tasks with the SQL Server Agent. --David Wall

Out of Order..........2005-02-18
This book is really not too bad to help someone learn about SQL Server 7. The only criticism I have is that the chapters seem to be out of order. The first week of this 3 week book is made up of security concepts like logins and permissions. I would hope that someone learning SQL Server would first want to learn about data types and data retrieval (which comes in the 2nd week). Views, stored procedures, and triggers are in week 3.
The logical order to me is: week one - data types and data retrieval, week two - views, stored procedures, and triggers and week three - login security and permissions.
I think the book would be much better if the security information was saved for the last week.
Excellent well organized reference. a Must!.......2001-02-20
I am (by today's standard) an experienced SQL Developer/DBA (among others), and this book has been by my side ever since I started to work with SQL Server 7.
I agree with many that the TYS series is not very consistent when it comes to delivering the quality you'd expect, but If I were to judge them by this book, I would have had a very tall pile of TYS books. Additionally this book is an EXCELLENT value for the price!.
The way the book is organized is excellent. Clear concise chapters with Excellent examples, no beating around the bushes, in an easy to follow style. The logical sequence of these is as good, clear and unpolluted as the content itself.
Always excellent as a reference, it is always in my bookshelf at work withing hands reach, and even though some of its contents is very elementary for my level of expertise, it is always good to have a good source to go back to for a good wiff of the basics that we sometimes forget while inmersing ourselves in our day to day mundane tasks.
SQL Server 7 may not be the current version of the product as of the date of this review, but good books always go beyond the product and into the core of the subject matter, and SQL is a prime example of this. This book does a great job of exposing the elements underneath the shell of the product and as such will be a valuable asset in years to come.

WHAT 'S SQL AND SQL SERVER.......2000-12-26
I WANT KNOW ABOUT ALL (SQL AND SQL SERVER)
Fast, but Sketchy.......2000-09-16
If you read this book you will learn how to get around in SQL 7.0 quickly, yes. However, a book you can read in half a day is bound to miss some information that could be very frustrating very soon. For example, there is not clear information about how different data formats interact. Pretty useful information!
If you are really going to be getting into SQL 7.0, it may be worthwhile to take another day or two and read Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming by Robert Vieira instead. It is a little more thorough without being a boat-anchor.
The Best Book Available for Begginers.......2000-07-14
As a SQL Server trainer I am often asked to recommend books, and this is one that's always on the top of my list! It presents a wealth of information in a logical progression of 21 lessons. Spending an hour or two a day with this book will give a solid foundation for adminstering SQL 7 databases.
There are several criticisms I think are off base and a few that are unfair. With respect to criticisms about the book's technical accuracy, it's by far one of the most technically accurate. Knowing both the authors personally, I can assure you that both Richard (who happens to work on the SQL Server Team at Microsoft) and Rick are very concerned that they published the most technically accurate book they could. With respect to comments emphasizing a lack of emphasis on developing applications for SQL Server, the cover says the book is targeted towards administrators.
You won't learn everything there is know about SQL or SQL Server administration (no one knows everything). You will learn the fundamentals, and more importanly where to look for further information.

This is the second worst PC related book i've ever read.......2003-10-24
Two thirds of the book are about nothing. If the book was completed only on 100 or 150 pages ("the best of"), i could give 3 stars..
It is a bit chaotic ordered, there are mistakes in that book and author often uses magic formulas "If you need do this, do this: ...". The book is much more about How, not Why.
If you have some experiences with programming in any language, buying subj. is only wasting money..
easy to understand.......2002-10-31
This book doesnt waste time with all the little details and just talks about the major points. Want to be a MySQL guru? Then this books is NOT for you.
However, if you are know how to code and how to use flat files then this book is for you and will teach you how to code your scripts with the use of MySQL database.
Yes there are some typos like others pointed out but who uses the codes word for word from the book? You should know the basics of scripting language like Perl or PHP before buying this book. And you might want to buy a book about SQL.
This book isn't here to teach you Perl, PHP or SQL so making small errors in those codes shouldn't affect your buying decision.
This book teaches MySQL database nice and simply and I still use it as a referrence after 2 years of working with MySQL.
CONFUSING.......2002-09-19
I thought that this book would teach me the basics of MySQL in a relatively short time. While I did learn some things, I spent most of my time figuring out how the author got from one step to the next. There were numerous typos in the code that left me, as a beginner, scratching my head. Most SAMS books are great, but not this one.
Typos galore! Don't waste your money........2002-06-10
Typos galore
I know I'm throwing fuel on a bonfire, but this book [stinks]!
HUNDREDS of errors and misinformation. I tried to return the book but found out if I open the CD it is non-returnable.
The only reason I opened the CD was to get a file that WASN'T EVEN ON THE CD!
Next time I will read the reviews on Amazon first.
Too poor and illogical........2002-03-30
What this book is and what this book is not?
This is not a book neither mysql, nor sql language, nor database management.
Examples are left unexplained, some critical topics are left uncovered, others are left to author's intuition, chapters are bad organized, there is a sense of non-logical organization all over the book. If this is your first book about mysql, you will "teach yourself" nothing about mysql. If not, you simply don't need this book. I suggest to spend money for this book to buy an ink cartridge and some paper to print out the official mysql manual. This book has definitively no mean.
