5 out of 5 stars NV Memory Technology book review.......2000-05-01

This book is one of the most comprehensive sources available for information on non-volatile memory ICs. The subject material gives in-depth coverage of EPROM, EEPROM and FLASH design, fabrication and reliability issues. The information is extremely well-organized, thorough and practical and was obviously written by practicing professionals as opposed to academia. The illustrations are numerous and excellent. Numerous references are cited as sources for additional information. This is NOT one of those technical books which is merely a collection of published aricles. The authors obviously established a structure of relevant topics prior to developing their subjects and choosing their reference sources. The weakest areas of the book were test and ultra low power NV design.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this book as a supplement to your textbook.......2004-07-23

Other than a few typos, this book is awesome. I learn the basic concepts from this book, and then do the problems in my textbook. This book has helped me when my professor couldn't/wouldn't. You cannot learn physics from this book only, but it is an excellent addition to any textbook.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book - many errors.......2000-07-06

This book is a decent book for those being taking a freshman physics course for non-majors. This is a good supplement to a calculus based physics textbook.

4 out of 5 stars typographical errors.......2000-03-08

it's a good book, it helped a great deal. I wish time was taken to correct typographical errors. I lost valuable time that could have been used to study.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful, recommend.......2000-01-17

this is a very good book except there are some mistakes(but the mistakes are easily found and corrected by yourself). This book gives you how to attack problems in a very organized manner even though the problems are not so difficult. I came to be able to solve more challenging problems in a different book after solving the easy but organized ones in this book. I recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Book If You Need Help with Physics.......2000-01-17

Beginning with the "How To Use This Book" and "How To Excel in Your Physics Course", (especially the latter) and throughout its pages, this is, without a doubt in this readers opinion, the very best book on the subject I have found to date (And I have many). It puts you through the paces. If you want to know this subject and excel in it, these authors have placed before you the practice you will need. I recommend this book highly for your first experiences in this subject. Starting with the mathematical background required; then on to Classical through Special Relativity. It covers each and every topic, in a clear, concise method that enhances learning and improves retention greatly in each and every area. It's a great reference to have on the shelf. EXCELLENT! My thanks to the authors. Your book has helped me much more than I ever expected.

1 out of 5 stars This is a hastily compiled collection of lecture notes (or summaries of a Ph.D. student's thesis).......2007-03-31

The best thing about this book is its table of contents. In second place is the preface. And then it's all downhill. If you want to buy a list of topics in electronic communications, with brief summaries that explain absolutely nothing whatsover in any great (or even little) detail, and you really have no other use for your hard earned $100.00+ dollars, then please go ahead and buy this book.

If however, you value your cash, and would rather buy a book that rather than insulting your intelligence, at least attempts in good faith to teach you something, then please, don't fall for the marketing ploy of the title "RF Microelectronics". Because there's very little "RF" and even less "Microelctronics" in this text. Here's a taste of the marketing ploy from the very first line of the preface:

"The annual worldwide sales of cellular phones has exceeded $2.5B."

Do I see dollar signs in your eyes? I thought so. Don't fall for the trap. If you want to learn a thing or two about RF electronics theory as well as detailed explanations of what the job of each individual component (like a capacitor here or a resistor there) in a communication circuit is, then buy:

Modern Electronic Communication (9th Edition) by Gary M. Miller.

The Miller book's 9th edition is coming out soon. Even with 992 pages of text, it costs only $60.00.

I believe Razavi's book should never have been published because frankly, it's not a book at all. Why it's still in print (though stuck at first edition for nearly 10 years), is completely beyond any sane person's comprehension.

2 out of 5 stars Content seemed great, but not explained in detail. .......2007-03-04

When I first bought this book, I was very hopeful. The book seemed to cover a lot of relevant material, in a concise fashion. When I tried to read it however, I found it a little bit too much on the concise side. I have read very complicated books with a lot of math before, and I could follow them easier than this "easy" writing style. Almost every subject is covered in other books in more detail and better. Sometimes it's nice to have a simpler book which is an introduction, and that is what I was hoping for, but this just didn't do it for me. I donated the book to the library, as I felt I would never really get too much out of it. This didn't stop me from buying Mr. Razavi's "Design of Analog CMOS ICs" and I liked his tutorial in the IEEE Phase Lock Loop book he edited. I know he can do a better job.

This is a repeat of a previous review I did. Since then I also read Mr. Razavi's book "Design of Integrated Circuits for Optical Communications" which was also concise but very nicely explained and I learned a lot from it.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for novices.......2006-08-06

Although it is a little bit old and there are so many other books on the subject, I still think that it is one of the bests. This book gives you a good basic knowledge of wireless circuits and systems. It's a good reference to look at too. In general, all books by BR are good, he is an incredible writer. His books are always very good to start with when you don't really know anything about the subject. As you get to know the subject more and more, you will know the value of the book and will discover more practical stuff in it. I totally recommend this one and all his books.

3 out of 5 stars OK book, but buyer beware.......2004-09-23

This book covers a good deal of material in a very hot area. However, coverage is uneven with occasional mistakes. The book seems to be collected in a hurry some lecture notes. For example, the formula for the relationship between jitter and phase noise given at the beginning of the book is wrong (even units do not make sense) and is not the same for the expression given in the PLL chapter (it makes more sense).

I believe a good book on the field is yet to be written.

5 out of 5 stars Clean book just like new.......2007-10-05

The book came fast, was much cheaper than a new book, and its quality was practically new.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Companion.......2007-02-18

This text was recommended as a companion to Oppenheim's "Discrete Time Signal Processing" for a senior DSP filtering course. If your school is like mine, you sit in three hours of lecture a week, nodding and agreeing and feeling like DSP is straightforward and intuitive. Then you sit down to do your homework and wonder, "where did this come from?" Schaum's helps to bridge this gap with compartmentalized topics and numerous examples. The sections help you quickly ascertain how the notation translates and how thoroughly the topic is covered relative to the coursework. The examples help because, let's face it, it helps to see certain types of problems worked through from start to finish. There are many, many examples within the sections and at the end of the sections, worked through in minute detail. If you're into or studying DSP as a senior engineering student, if you're not the top dog in your class but still want to do well, if you learn from examples and from working through many problems that you're able to confirm, then this book is for you. If you're looking for a "solutions manual" type of book, if you want a "cliff notes" type companion, or if you don't understand lecture concepts at all, then this book won't help you much. It's not an introductory text, although it covers introductory concepts, in my opinion there's not enough background on the rudimentary DSP topics to truly qualify as introductory.

1 out of 5 stars Helpful in Understanding Academic Deception.......2006-11-04

Look, to an engineering mind, the processing of samples at a certain rate is really straight forward and can be mastered in a couple years at any decent engineering firm.

Now there are concepts (useful abstractions...organic way of thinking) that will probably allude such a mind (machine way of thinking) in such a situation, but certainly ease one's solving of problems.

Unfortunately, these useful abstractions are not covered in this text. As far as I've seen, most DSP literature--this book is a good example--either never mentions or else completely obscures such useful abstractions through the inclusion of a huge number of useless and even harmful ones. Abstractions, that is. In short, this text is a student mind-control/brainwashing tool.

Moreover, as a Schaum's outline, this hidden purpose is reprehensible. Most Schaum's outlines serve as illuminators of the useful abstraction. Not this one. And so (tongue-firmly-in-cheek) DSP by Hayes can really only serve in the understanding of academic deception at institutions like MIT (Hayes is MIT^3: BS, MS, PHD) and GATECH (Hayes works there).

    ----------------------------------------

After some reflection, let me add the idea of "leaky abstractions."
In a sense, no abstraction is truly DRY, all leak a little bit, all subject to cross-cutting concerns. But in the case of Dr's Hayes's Outline, the abstract leakiness factor is far from a fixable plumbing problem and more towards one h-ll of a pss-poor construction.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Refreshing supplement for revision.......2006-04-30

This book is a carefully written one which will enable any student to revise thoroughly before DSP exam. It has an outstanding collection of solved problems like most other Schaum's outlines. This book is to be used as a supplement book to any standard DSP book like Oppenheim or Proakis & Manolakis. This book can make quite a lot of difference in final grades of most of students. So, it is advisable for any UG/PG to revise this book well before exam.

5 out of 5 stars Good as a refresher or supplemental text in DSP.......2006-01-11

This outline could never stand alone as a DSP tutorial, but it is excellent if you need extra problems to solve or if you need a refresher course in elementary DSP topics. Chapter one starts where any DSP course usually starts - with a quick review of signals and systems. Chapter two is on Fourier analysis and discusses all of the basics including the concept of filtering, interconnection of systems, and finally the discrete time Fourier transform and its properties. Chapter 3 is on sampling, and includes a good discussion of analog to digital conversion and how it can induce aliasing. Next the converse, digital to analog conversion, is discussed as well as discrete time processing of continuous signals and finally sample rate conversion. Chapter 3 is especially useful, since most DSP texts do not go into as much detail on practical A/D and D/A conversion topics as this chapter does. Chapter four finally gets into the z-transform - its definition, its properties, and its inverse. Chapter 5 is about the transform analysis of systems and specifically how the z transform makes the analysis of such systems much simpler than what was done in earlier chapters. Chapter six discusses the discrete Fourier transform, which is a finite-series version of the DTFT, which was discussed in chapter two. Because the Discrete Fourier Transform has a time complexity of NxN, the next chapter discusses its more practical alternative the Fast Fourier Transform, which has an NlogN time complexity. This might seem trivial at first, but if you are filtering 1Kx1K pixel images, the difference becomes significant. Although this chapter is very brief, it does a pretty good job of driving home the main points of the algorithm. Also, it has some pretty good exercises on the FFT, which are usually hard to find in textbooks. Now that all of the groundwork has been laid, chapter eight discusses the implementation of discrete time systems, which is the essence of DSP. Common filter structures are introduced. Chapter 9, the final chapter, is on filter design. Both IIR and FIR filter techniques are introduced. Thus, if you are in an advanced DSP course, this outline will probably be too elementary for you. For first semester students, this should be a very helpful outline for transitioning from the study of linear systems to DSP.

    Book Description

When basic researchers started working on semiconductors during the late nineteen thirties and on integrated circuits at the end of the nineteen fifties, they did not know that their work would change the lives of future generations. Very few people at that time recognized the significance of, perhaps, the most important invention of the century. Historians have assigned the invention of integrated circuits to Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce. In this book, the author argues that the group of inventors was much larger. This richly illustrated account is a personal recollection of the development of integrated circuits and personalities – such as Russell Ohl, Karl Lark-Horovitz, William Shockley, Carl Frosch, Lincoln Derick, Calvin Fuller, Kurt Lehovec. Jean Hoerni, Sheldon Roberts, Jay Last, Isy Haas, Bob Norman, Dave Allison, Jim Nall, Tom Longo, Bob Widlar, Dave Talbert, Frank Wanlass, and Federico Faggin. Here is the first comprehensive behind-the-scenes account of the history of the integrated circuit, the microelectronics industry, and the people closely involved in the development of the transistor and the integrated circuit.

"Your book is going to make a major contribution to semiconductor history. You and I agree that, while the world loves a hero, semiconductor progress depended on the efforts and ideas of a large number of people, and that moving forward depended on contributors going back a few decades in some cases. Also, as is the case with most inventions, a number of people with access to the same pool of common knowledge were working independently at the same time to put it all together and to make the necessary extensions to the existing technology and who realized that the time was right for society to accept the new concepts. Your diligent research points all of this out."

Dr. Jay Last, Former Shockley Laboratories employee, co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor, co-founder of Amelco Semiconductor, and manager of Fairchild’s group which designed and produced the world first planar integrated circuit.

"Bo Lojek presents a remarkable document of the most important and significant technical development of our times. He describes in astounding detail the engineering efforts of modern microelectronics. He concentrates on the history of silicon semiconductor devices. California’s "Silicon Valley" is the center of attention, together with its ancestry of transistor invention at Bell Laboratories. He has collected a wealth of illustrative documentation, gives incisive insight into the lives of the main actors and shows the often tragic fates of the engineers and businessmen. He does not hide his firm belief in the individual engineer and warns of the retarding influence of present-day political correctness."

Dr. Hans J. Queisser, Former Shockley Semiconductor scientist and retired director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Solids, Stuttgart, Germany.

"The technical history of the semiconductor history rivals the 1849 California Gold Rush as a period filled with excitement and opportunity. Although I cannot first hand validate its complete accuracy, I enthusiastically encourage you to read the collected facts, opinions, and views of an author who was actually part of this amazing period, viewing it as a successful practicing Engineer during this "gold rush" - like hey-day of the semiconductor industry.

For educators and technologists you will find this collection of data, facts, and opinions, collected and observed first hand by the author, fascinating! It is a tough read for others due to the writing experience of the author and its technical focus."

John F. Gifford, Former Fairchild Semiconductor Marketing Manager of Linear Integrated Circuits, co-founder of Advanced Micro Devices, and President and Chief Executive Officer of Maxim Integrated Products.

"Bo Lojek gets it right! There are few industries as dynamic as semiconductors and the history of the semiconductor industry is still unfolding. This book gives the history of people, places and technology that resulted in today’s semiconductor industry. I particularly like the inclusion of many technical pieces in the book."

Robert Dobkin, Former National Semiconductor Director of Advanced Circuit Development and co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Linear Technology Corporation.

    4 out of 5 stars A good Introduction.......2004-09-30

Written in 1998 the book is getting a little long in the tooth and needs some updating. However the principles of many types of MEMS tranducers are covered as well as the basic process technology. It is probably the still best introduction to MEMS you can buy. The organisational structure of the book make it a good starting reference as each topic is dealt with in a fairly self contained way.

    Expensive but worth the money.

    3 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2002-12-05

This book is a good reference for graduate level reading and MEMS researchers. The author writes clearly and does a good job of highlighting important work in the field. However, the main problem with the book is the organization and the multiple forward references. Many terms are not explained the first time around (and appear two sections or a chapter later). The references are not numbered and are somewhat difficult to look up by name. The same problem with figures. The book classifies sensors and actuators according to their primary function (mechanical, thermal, optical...). Accurate references with page or section numbers to other chapters would help particularly with such a classification. Madou's "Fundamentals of Microfabrication" book and Sze's "Semiconductor Sensors" book complement this book nicely.

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for anyone interested in MEMS.......1999-08-28

Without question Kovacs' book on micromachined transducers is the most comprehensive book available on MEMS to date. This well-written book on MEMS transducers reflects his broad knowledge and understanding of the field.

4 out of 5 stars The best beginners' book.......2007-01-18

This is the best book if you are just starting to use PIC technology. He doesn't make the mistake of using unexplained jargon, He also writes in a clear and direct style, which is the most important thing,

    John Kirby

    5 out of 5 stars Nicely Done.......2007-01-11

One of the few technical books that make sense. Engineers that need a quick run through to get a leg up on assembler will find this very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for PIC starters.......2006-08-18

This books absolutely deserves 5 stars. It provides simple way to understand and program PIC Microchip MCUs. This book is not about fancy projects, it is basically textbook for starters and definately a must have. There is no copy/paste material and messy diagrams about PIC architecture. The author states that programming PICs is "moving numbers" and it cannot be said in a better way. You will have a through understanding of PIC programming. There are simple projects that explain theory in a practical way and PICs used are 16F54, 16F57 and 12F675 (inexpensive onces).

4 out of 5 stars design simple circuits that are programmably controlled.......2006-03-16

Morton lets you easily get acquainted with microcontrollers and microprocessors. So that you can code in the assembly or machine language of an actual microprocessor and then see tangible results in some circuit.

Various simple circuits are described. The inevitable analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog. But others too. The book demystifies how to use what is basically a computer. At a level that involves very little theory. This may be a boon to some students who desire a hands-on approach.

2 out of 5 stars Not current information.......2005-09-09

This book is relatively out of date. It deals mostly with the older PIC processors and techniques. The basic microcontroller data is there, but not in a clear format. I got it to help instruct a friend on microcontrollers, but I did not use it. Myke Predko's books are far superior,
