5 out of 5 stars PASSED IT!.......2006-11-06

I used this book in conjunction with the Network+ Study Guide book from Sybex. I found that this book had plenty of information aimed at real world experience and directly to passing the exam, while the Network+ Study Guide (Sybex) book had more concise information for passing the exam. Also, there are some one or two details that are missed here, and are mentioned in the other book. This combination proved to be a winner with regards to not only passing the exam, but understanding the information for real world experience. I mention the combination because there is no 'one stop' shopping, when it comes to study guides. Obviously, for more advanced information with regards to networking, there are other books for that, though this one has a wealth of information. This one is for passing the exam. Other reviewers for this type of book fail to stick to that point. I PASSED! ... and with a very good score. Overall, I would definitely use this series of books (along with Sybex) to study from for other exams, when the time comes. This book is now valued reference material that I can look back on.

3 out of 5 stars Average book but it helped me pass.......2006-07-14

I read this book from start to finish and found one or more topics completing lacking. One such area was authentication - in particular Kerberos. In the test, I was asked about Kerberos and had absolutelty no idea what to answer. I went back to the book after the exam but there was only one paragraph about Kerberos. Admittedly, my practice exams were also light on Kerberos.

Apart from that there were some minor typos, but the writing style, in my opinion, was a little more livelier than some other texts.

I certainly wouldn't rely solely on any one text to pass (this book is no different). Get a practice test software as a supplement.

In the end, I did pass and now the book is used as a reference for which it is quite adequate.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-03-01

This second edition (with 2005 objectives) is perfect for someone taking an academic approach to the Network+ exam. Note that this book is part of the "Exam Prep" series, not the "Exam Cram" series. (Essentially, the "Prep" series goes much more in-depth than the "Cram" series.)

I offer this becuase it took me a costly accident and about a half of a day of shear confusion to figure out that there was a difference. As such, I'm sure some will criticize this book as going into too much depth in some areas. Usually these critiques are arm-chair, after the test comments. (I've read hundreds of Amazon reviews, and I find this comment to be the most frequent and the most frustrating.) I suppose this is fine advise if you are a "crammer," maybe an experienced network administrator just needing some refresher.

If you are like me, however, and want to prepare for the exam and actually learn while doing it, then this is the book for you. It's thorough, but not complex. It can be overwhelming, yet it flows beautifully. It is packed with tips, review questions, exam alerts and (my favorite) mini-senarios to drive the point home.

I have studied for and passed two other certifications, and in both instances I needed multiple study materials. In this case, this was the only book I needed. One read through and I had all the confidence I needed.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Guide.......2006-01-02

I'm reading this book after watching training videos for the Network+ exam. So far I can say with conviction that if I was to choose only one book for my Network+ exam preparations, then this would have to be it. It has that special quality that doesn't just inform the reader, but actually builds confidence that comes from understanding the material. This is the hallmark of good writing.

Each chapter builds logically on the one before it and the paragraphs are brief enough to pass along an idea without weighing the reader down with too much detail. That said, the authors seem fully aware of where more information may be required and promptly allay the reader's concerns by assuring him or her of a fuller treatment of the topic in a later chapter. In this way one is not only prepared to take the exam, but is also shaped into a competent professional.

There's humour but it's just right and the REALLY important stuff is highlighted in Exam Watch boxes.

Would I therefore recommend this book on its own? Probably not. But that's just because I believe in having at least 2 points of view. But if you're short on cash or don't have the time to do the ideal comparative study that 2 books would afford, then this book and maybe the Exam Cram 2 Practice Questions for Network+ Exam N10-003 would make excellent resources for the exam.

All in all I would highly recommend this book. I'm only surprised to be the first person to be reviewing such a good book when it's been available for months.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2007-09-29

The author does a wonderful job of organizing the objectives in this book. I read half the Sybex book before purchasing this one and there is a pretty substantial difference. The Sybex book tends to jump around on tangents somewhat while this author keeps you learning from the ground up, staying true to the topic, and building you up to the end! Buy this book, and some sort of router simulation product like Sybex's routersim (assuming you don't have your own hardware), and get the practice test off selftestsoftware.com. Do all the great labs at the end of every chapter in this book as well. I can almost guarantee you pass, and more importantly actually learn the material for the real world! I did it on the first try with barely knowing IOS at all. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise Coverage.......2007-09-13

After reviewing several CCNA study guides, I chose the Exam Prep CCNA 640-801 book for its clear, concise, yet thorough explanations of CCNA material.

I just learned that the 640-801 exam will be retired in November 2007. As a result, I am looking forward to the Exam Prep CCNA 640-802 book.

5 out of 5 stars If you are new to networking, use this book over Sybex.......2006-06-24

First off don't get me wrong the Sybex book is great. However, if you weren't really familar with networking terms it is hard to just jump in and start reading.

I do have to say that this book is better at helping new people in to the networking world. The author does not jump around with terms. He will explain it to you before he will use it. Some of the other books out there will use terms and not even explain them until 3 chapters later.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2006-03-02

This book is GREAT/ While some of the lingo is a little hard to understand, and I had to reread some of the passages a few times to undersatnd what they were trying to explain to me, overall I full Recommend this book. I would also suggest gewtting the CCNA dummies book and use them together. With these two books, its very likely you will pass..... maybe not the first time, but this makes it possible.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better. But, a lot of good information. .......2006-08-17

Don't get me wrong, between ExamCram2, Cisco, and Sybex, this was my favorite book. It is unfortunate that there really is no good one choice for studying for the BCRAN and, though opinions vary, I found it to be the hardest of the three tests I have thus far taken.

The Sybex book is organized in a strange fashion which I found to be a bit confusing. I read it once, and rarely picked it up again. While browsing through it just now, on the top of page 95 I read "config title." Title?! Sybex's chapter on VPN was absolutely horrible. However, having said that, there were a couple things I liked in the Sybex book, such as the tendency to (sometimes) include complete configurations shown from start to finish.

Cisco's book was full of good and useless information. A portion of the book was spent on useless things such as choosing WAN equipment. Though very useful in the field, this information is completely worthless on the test; there are other Cisco books published for this purpose. This book claims to be an "Exam certification guide" hence it should cover what is on the test, not what the author thinks a CCNP should know. I also found the author's unneeded discussion of the 700 series commands to be annoying. The author also tended to get a little too deep into theory which, although interesting, is not on the test.

The EC2 book was my favorite and I found myself referring to it more and more as exam grew near. I could not understand how to configure VPN till I looked at EC2. It gets right to the point, it tells you how it works, shows you how to configure it, and moves on. Skimming and reviewing this book is very easy due to careful organization. Nevertheless, I could have given this book a higher rating if it weren't for the errors (which I have tried to report with no success).

Let's name a few mistakes just for fun. Pg. 208, bottom, second to last sentence only, should say "never DEactivate the line." Pg. 73, question #6, no, chap never sends the password in clear text. (or at all, it sends a HASH) Perhaps there is an undocumented feature but, if so, who cares? We'd use Pap. Pg. 114, I don't care if you are right or wrong, Cisco always refers to the D channel as 16kbs framing and signaling. Remember, on the exam, the right answer is ALWAYS the Cisco answer. 233, CBWFQ, Bit bucket?! Refer to Cisco for a better explanation of CBWFQ. Page 124, HUGE MISTAKE - dialer load-threshold is a NOT a percentage, it's 1-255. Another huge mistake, page 146, dialer pools, the correct command is dialer pool-member 1, not dialer pool 1. Pg. 214 - OSPF does NOT do unequal load balancing!! Do not mess with the metrics to make a 128 isdn think it is 10bt. If you can't tell me why equal load balancing between ISDN and Ethernet is bad, you need to retake the CCNA. Page 122, dialer-map is an INTERFACE command. Also, why are they talking about dialer-group under dialer-map? Dialer-group should have been talked about on the previous page under interesting traffic.

I am sure I could find mistakes in the other two books as well if I had studied them harder. (I found about as many mistakes in Cisco's BSCI book, not including the ones noted by Cisco in the errata) It is a shame that there is no one good book one can review to pass this particular test. My advice would be to buy all three, or at least EC2 and Cisco. To say thanks for reading my long review, I will give you one last gem. On Cisco's site, one can find the "Career Certification Paths" which give a pitiful list of topics that will be on the test. I wish I could tell you that if it isn't on the list, it isn't on the test. But, that simply isn't true. However, if it is on the list, it is almost certainly on the test - no matter what any book says. A simple review showed me that WRED, RFC 1483/2684 bridging (hint - in relation to dsl), and dialer watch were not explained in any of the three books! Google them. As this list is changed without notice, I would highly advise reviewing it yourself. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars Great both for the exam, and as quick reference.......2007-01-11

This was a great concise prep book for the CCNP's BCMSN exam. While the practice questions weren't nearly as tough as the actual exam, I still passed on my first try with only a couple weeks of study time needed. Whever I'm at work and need a refresher on switching, this is the first thing I reach for and it's helped me out again and again.

I'd also like to add that the QoS section is also a great concise reference, and explain DSCP and CoS values better than anything else I've found so far.

I'd highly recommend this book for anyone working with Cisco router, switches, or VoIP products. Save yourself time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Good and clear.......2005-11-20

Lot of information, clear explanations of not easy concepts, with pictures and examples.Clearly organised and concise.
Sure a must if you want to pass BCMSN, better than others you can find all claiming to be the ultimate references for this exam.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, good prep for the test.......2005-11-13

I had this book, the Sybex book and the Cisco Press books. After seeing the age of the information in the Sybex book I quit using it and used this and the Cisco Press books (practical studies: Switching and the BCMSN study guide).

This was a good cram before the test. It covers pretty much everything you will get in the test. I passed the first time! (Not by much, but I passed)

Keep in mind that this test is very hard and you will be required to have some practical information for the router sims and will need to know how to troubleshoot networking, in addition to memorizing all the concepts. This was not an easy test.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2005-09-27

After reading this book, I felt more than prepared for the BCMSN exam. Having read many of Mr. Deal's books, this one is just as good. It is well written and will be used as an excellent reference. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-08-06

I recently used this book in conjunction with the Cisco Press guide to pass the BCMSN exam. I thought that it was an excellent combination of theory review and configuration examples. It is very concise and pretty much everything is covered. My only criticism is that the practice test on the CD is much easier than the real exam.

Written for the new or experienced Java developer seeking Sun programmer certification, Java 2 Exam Prep provides a concise and quite thorough review of the nuts and bolts of the Java programming language, along with an appealing mix of review questions and hands-on exercises.

The tour of the Java programming language provided in Java 2 Exam Prep naturally centers on the basics needed to complete certification. You'll get all the required details here, including everything from keywords, data types, and arrays to designing classes and using built-in APIs like AWT, Swing, and network classes.

But it's the review test questions that are probably the distinguishing feature of this book. Each chapter presents about 20 review questions. (Earlier sections generally have more, and later sections have a few less.) By the end of the book, any reader who carefully works through these problems will have a definite leg up on the certification exam. While other review books certainly provide sample Java questions, the range of quizzed material in Java 2 Exam Prep is a standout.

Each chapter also has short hands-on exercises. After reading about basic concepts and necessary APIs and trying out the test questions, you might discover holes in your Java knowledge. The exercises let you build knowledge in weaker areas. The layout of each chapter lets you concentrate on those areas that need the most work.

If the format of Java 2 Exam Prep is a winner, its pleasant tone and clearly presented review of essential material can help bring blurry topics into focus. Though the Java certification exams themselves are known for their sometimes arcane detail, the upfront style of Java 2 Exam Prep may be just what you need to review Java successfully and earn Java certification. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: The Java certification process, Java data types, installing the JDK, flow control, exceptions, arrays, class design, patterns, garbage collection, thread programming, AWT and JFC/Swing basics, layout managers, event handling, AWT and Java 2D graphics APIs, I/O, SmartCards, and servlet fundamentals.

    Book Description

1 out of 5 stars Factual error on the VERY FIRST PAGE!...........2003-03-03

You would think that a study guide would be pretty accurate, but ... WOW! I found several factual errors on the very first page of the book. The following error is on the "Cram Sheet" which is the very first page of the book (right behind the cover). The Cram Sheet says "Logical OR operators | and ||." Well, | is not a logical operator; it is a bitwise arithmetic operator. It goes on to say in the next two sentences "The | operator always evaluates both operands. The || operator 'short-circuits' an evaluation and does not evaluate the right hand term ...". WOW!!!!!!!!!! Nuf said!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad choice, but don't make it your primary study guide.......2003-01-22

I had just passed the Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 1.4 Platform exam (with a score of 80%), and I want to help prospective test takers in finding the "right" Java study guide. I bewildered by the number of books available, and I had to try many of them before I settled on the right one. Here are my short reviews for each of the major Java study guides:

"Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide" by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates (five stars): I felt this book was the best among all the Java study guides. Both the authors were responsible for the Java certification exam's development, and the practice questions are *very* similar to the actual exam. The authors also cover exactly what will be on the 1.4 exam, pointing out potential topics, questions, and pitfalls. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

"A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification" by Khalid Mughal and Rolf Rasmussen (four stars): This is a good choice if you plan on taking the 1.2 exam. The book also has a dual purpose of teaching Java and sometimes goes beyond the actual scope of the exam, but it is nonetheless excellent. However, as the title suggests, this isn't the book for you if you don't have any programming experience. Also, the book's practice questions are much, much harder than the actual exam.

"Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide (3rd Edition)" by Philip Heller and Simon Roberts (two stars): This was the most disappointing book of all. I don't know why so many people swear by it, but the book appeared to have been rushed into production. Many of the errors and typos have been updated in the book's second printing, but the book's coverage of topics is quite weak. Lastly, the practice questions were not only too easy, but they don't look very similar to how questions look on the real test. It's not a terrible book (many people appear to have passed the exam with just this book), but there are better options.

"Java 2 Exam Prep" by Bill Brodgen (three stars): This compact study guide isn't a bad choice for prospective test takers with a good Java foundation. It covers all the exam's topics succinctly, but as another reviewer noted, it should not be your primary study guide. I personally did not find the book particularly useful.

Lastly, sign up for Sun's ePractice practice exams. You'll get three sample tests, and they will help you prepare for the exam by showing you how the questions will look and what type of questions they will ask. I didn't like the idea of spending the extra money, but the practice exams definitely helped me prepare for the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommended this book.......2003-01-15

I'm not so agree with some of the comment that have been posted on this book, I have used this book for my preparation for SCJP exam and till now after two years, I still have farely good impression on the book and refer it in my day to day work. I admit this book cant be used solely as the only guide especially for newbie but it serve as a good complement to a more detail guide, i pick up tricks from this book which I cant find in other place, in certain area it really shield light when I was confused by other material.

I passed with 86% from zero knowledge of Java in less than 3 months time, I think this book have lift me up to certain level.

    Book Description

The CCNA Exam Guide prepares you to pass the CCNA exam. It covers all necessary objectives for the exam. The tutorial text is strictly exam-related and flows with minimal interruption. Key concepts are the only "notes" set apart from the text by special formatting. This series is designed to be used either with or without outside instruction. To help you fully understand the topic, visual cues are used liberally throughout the book: Diagrams put concepts into a visual form that aids in retaining and comprehending, and figures confirm your understanding of procedures. This book also provides additional information, such as addresses for on-line help and supplemental sample tests, testing locations, test-taking tips and strategies, and emotional preparation.

    Hello,
I have bought, read this book and got my CCNA with score 903.
The language that information is provided is quite good.
The tests on CD are very good too.
I got CCNA at age 14, so you can get it too.
    Thanks

    5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2000-11-10

This book has done a great job of outlining the principles of the CCNA certification. I have taken several classes from Heather Osterloh and have been successful with each certification(i.e., MCSE and now CCNA). I would recommend this book to anyone interested in obtaining not only their CCNA certification but also a good foundation of networking principles.

This is a really compact but yet comprehensive CCNA books that I have ever come across. Engineer planning to take the CCNA test should own this book.

Basically, this book has everything you want to get you started in the networking world, moren importantly prepare you sufficiently for the vital CCNA exam. I particularly like the "compressed notes" for overnite review just days before the exam. The book was designed to provide you the basic understanding of networking. It reinforced what you have gone through in each chapter with some sample test exercise. This would provide the reader on the potential question in CCNA.

With this book, you are basically killing 2 birds with one stone. It not only assist you in understanding the complex networking with its simplified explaination and clear diagram; it also prepares you for the exam.

I have just gone through a few chapter, feeling very fulfilling after going through the evaluation question at the end of the chapter. It gives you the indication on how well is your grasps in the particular chapter ........

It's not a perfect book after all. This book is not meant to provide an in-depth view on Switching & Routing concept. To make up this, you might want to get Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices.

I am very new in the networking world and I feel that this book is able to get me started and rolling. Thanks.

    1 out of 5 stars A waste of paper.......2001-11-07

I had passed the 4 core NT 4.0 exams on the first try. I bought this book and the "Guide to Proxy Server 2.0" by Course Technology to study for my 5th MCSE test. These books are exact duplicates of each other (notice they have the same author). And both are not worth the paper they are printed on.

They often repeat the same subject in different chapters in different ways, such that I had to flip back and forth between chapters to try and figure out what they were trying to say. But even so, the information seemed conflicting (I can't tell you for sure because after reading the book twice, I don't feel I understand Proxy Server 2.0).

But since I did well on the questions, I figured I could pass the MCSE test. Wrong...I failed. The questions on the real test did not resemble those found in the book. I have used other Exam Cram books and found them worth while, but this one was a waste of my time.

5 out of 5 stars This book made the test easy........2001-07-03

I'll probably just borrow some material from my review of the corresponding Exam Cram review, and the general point of that is, the lack of talent and ability among the test takers should not reflect poorly on this book. The book worked, very well. I passed my Proxy test nearly three years ago and I am only writing this review to defend the book, which is well worth the cost.

Before using this book, and the Exam Cram that goes with it, I had never used MS Proxy 2.0 and I never used it afterwards. I had limited exposure to MS Proxy 1.0 and that had been nearly a year prior. I used the Exam Cram and Exam Prep books to study for about a week and walked in and passed the test with flying colors. These books work, and they work well. The Proxy Server 2 elective is one of the easiest certification tests that I have ever taken and I believe that using these books is a large part of what made it so easy. If you don't have a strong understanding of TCP/IP and the concept of caching before going in, then maybe you should try another elective for your MCSE (or preferably another career field, you're an embarrassment to this one.)

The material presented in this book is solid and the review questions should be followed. If you can handle this book you can handle the test.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book.......2000-03-27

I am an MCSE and like many people have never bothered to write a review... but this time I felt I had to - this book wasted too much of my time. The material covered is not close to the test - the test and review questions in the book (which you will score high in if you read the book) are in NO WAY related to the Microsoft test of Proxy Server 2 and are repetitive and contradict other chapters in the book. On the other hand the Transender Exam questions are spot on - if not a little expensive... I will never buy another book by Exam Prep/Cram or any of these authors

1 out of 5 stars THE WORST BOOK ON THE MARKET!.......2000-02-05

First, I would like to say to the author... I Hate You. You are a horror of a man and you should have your hands removed so that you never defile the earth with another abomination such as this. If you read this book you will be terrified of Proxy Server and you will walk away knowing less than you did prior to reading it. It is completely confusing and incoherent. This book only makes since to the author.

2 out of 5 stars Can do better elsewhere........1998-09-01

As someone who had used a lot of the other exam prep and exam cram materials (mostly exam cram) I was hoping for the same quality materials but the book really comes up short and misses covering material in detail that you'll need to know for the test. If you liked the other books in this series, you'll be very dissappointed. The authors seem to have forgotten who their target audience is and waste a great deal of time explaining basic material covered in prior certification information. The book would be half the size if they would bring the level of discussion up several notches. The SYBEX study guide is much better and the exam cram is probably more worthy of reading than exam prep.
