Beginning Windows? This is the only book you need.......2006-07-25
I got this for my 12 year old son and he has went through the whole book in 3 weeks. He uses the CD rom to work the assighnments and actually showed me several things I didn't know. It realy covers the system restore capabilities of windows well. I highly recomend it to anyone who is first time windows users. They need to make a level 2 to this book though.
Excellent for beginners.......2006-02-22
I would consider this the missing manual that should be included with all new computer purchases for beginners.
Review of MS Window XP, Second Edition.......2006-02-21
I used this book as an aid in teaching a Beginning Computer Class at the senior center I belong to. The book was fine for this purpose. However, the book referred to corporate uses of Windows XP which I didn't need and I skipped those sections when I assigned homework. If the book had not included these topics it would have better served my purpose. Otherwise the book is well written and the examples help the learning process.
Ted Davidson
A little simplistic.......2005-08-02
I found this book good, but a little simplistic. I would have liked a little more, especially in the area of menus. They are difficult to control in XP.
Not Impressive.......2004-12-05
This book is strictly for beginners. I already knew most of the information before I read the Book. I was hoping this book would give be an advanced understanding of Windows Xp. It hasn't. It wasn't worth 30 bucks.

Basic Hardcover Textbook w/CD.......2007-08-12
Has a Quick Reference section for straight-forward questions. Also, goes into depth regarding other functions of Windows XP. Looking forward to utilizing the CD training program.
Setting the record straight!.......2006-08-24
The previous review posted for this book is so negative and completely misleading. The book is full of practical examples, tips, and tricks for working smarter with Windows XP. It's especially useful for people (like me) who learn visually--there are a lot of graphics to help you find your way along, and to make sure you've done It's certainly a lot more than the 500-page printout of a Help file the previous reviewer would have you believe.
Save your money.......2005-11-14
If you can read English, follow a wizard, and have access to the Internet you do NOT need this book. This book simply repeats the information found in Help and in the Wizards. There are no troubleshooting tips on what to do when the Wizard does not work.
There is a reason why this book has a used price of $3 soon after it hits the market.

Kerry Ottoson.......2004-10-11
I was very disappointed with the contents of this book. The information presented here can all be found in the readme files on the Embedded XP CD, in the development tool's help files, or on the microsoft website http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded.
If you are looking for details about some of the 10,000 components in the XP Embedded component database, this book does not have anything.
If you want all the installation and tool operation information in one place, this book is for you. If you want more in depth information about what the XP embedded components do, save your money.
Godd for beginner but not enough to do stuff.......2004-07-10
This book falls somewhere between "The most USELESS book..." and a book that is not detailed enough to really use. For beginners yes, its probably a good start, although XPe is not for beginners, it for serious programmers that need to crowbar XP into small things. I ordered this book and "Windows XP Advanced" by Sean D. Liming, and found that "Windows XP Advanced" was all that is needed.
A patently unfair review.......2003-11-21
While there are shortcomings in any book, the review below is manifestly unfair and wildly off the mark. To suggest that the book is "useless" while at the same time failing to back up these statements with any detail at all, is unacceptable. The author has a great deal of experience teaching the official Microsoft curriculum for Windows XP Embedded, and selected exercises that teach the most useful fundamentals. Does it cover every aspect of XPE? In 240 pages? Of course not. This wasn't the purpose of the book. The purpose of the book was to give newcomers to XPE a thorough introduction to key concepts of the OS and teach them, step by step, how to perform common implementations.
Want to build a headless system? That's Exercise 10. Want to implement Enhanced Write Filter and boot from CD ROM? That's Exercises 12 and 13. Create a custom component? Exercise 15.
To suggest that the book "doesn't include anything that can be usefull [sic] when developing with/for Windows XPe" (especially to someone who has never tried to boot XPE from CD ROM) is ludicrous - check the XPE newsgroups and you will see that many of the questions posed by newbies can be answered by completing the exercises.
Sometimes books get a bad review and that's fine, but unsubstantiated flames cannot go unanswered.
Annabooks / RTC Books
The most USELESS book.......2003-11-08
I'm an embedded software engineer and my current project involves developing product for XPe based platform.
It's my first project involving Windows XPe and to speed up development I've bought this "book" and in 5 minutes
found that it's the most USELESS purchase I've ever made.
This "book" doesn't include anything that can be usefull when
developing with/for Windows XPe.
Evaluation copy of Windows XPe from Microsoft ( cost ~ $3.00 )contains much, much more then this so-called shameless parody on
computer book.
Shame on both publisher and author.
Very through and well written for beginnersý butý.......2003-06-06
This is by far one of the most clearly written and explanatory books that you can find on Widows XPE in the tech sector. It is also unfortunately like the ONLY book find on Widows XPE in the tech sector. And although this book does a grand job getting you past the beginning stages of building your own XPE, it is only good for getting you started. Granted this is not a problem with the book, but more a problem with the availability of information on XPE. Which is to say, there is close to none. For instance I have found no expert material on how to convert a third party device driver in an InstallShield package into your own driver component. nVIDIA's Detonator drivers are a good example of this. It is not as simple as importing an .inf file (which is the answer this book will give you), because there are many errors that show up. Making third party device drivers into components is something that should be made very expertly clear as I'm sure anyone working with XPE will have a need to do it on almost any new build.

XP Dummies Express.......2007-02-23
While there are so many consumers that are interested in upgrading their Windows computers, to the newer Windows Vista software, there are many of us who actually don't even know how to operate their computers with the Windows XP operating system. This book is for those who just want a fast setup, when they don't actually have the time. The Windows XP Just The Steps for Dummies, is from the dummies book series. This edition is a short breakdown of ow simple it is to setup and operate Windows XP. Although there are several features that actually handle well, it unfortunately misses out for being a more comprehensive reflection on how to operate on certain features more vividly like Windows Media Player, and how to make sure your earlier Windows programs that aren't as comprehensive on working with XP, that can be allowed as a loophole. All in all, I really recommend for all the basic Windows XP For Dummies 2nd Edition instead. It is a much better book, that gives a more definitive reflection for all Windows computer owners.

Customer Reviews:
Easy solutions to find and use.......2004-10-04
Quickly, quickly! That is the focus of this book. The authors seem to be aiming this at someone (you) who needs to solve a problem now, without having to spend hours wading through the official manual. So Hatfield and Jones set out to find problems ("tasks" as the book terms these) that could be solved in 10 steps or less. Obviously, by the way, this is a user's manual, not a programmer's manual.
This constraint of 10 steps is broad enough for them to offer solutions to a gamut of common problems. Like copying a song from your music CD to your computer's hard disk. Many users have probably fumbled through the XP manual for this answer. Here, it is task 79. In fact, in recognition of the importance of music, some 14 tasks are grouped together that deal with music related problems.
Perhaps if you are still unsure about this book, try glancing at the contents. It lists 261 tasks, each with a very descriptive subject line. Care has clearly gone into the wording of these.
A Great book to have by your computer.......2003-12-08
This is a great book to read from beginning to end or to have sitting next to your computer if you are running Windows XP. This book presents information on over 250 different tasks that you will find yourself wanting to do with Windows XP. Even better, it presents these tasks in very easy to follow steps. Some of the things that you can learn to do using this book include:
- set up your computer to work with the internet or a network
- clear your internet history files
- remove the temporary files created when you surf the web.
- set blocks on what web sites kids on your computer can see.
- Set up different backgrounds and resolutions for different users or accounts on your computer
- learn to create movies, audio CDs, and other multimedia programs.
- create a screen saver with your own pictures
- resize, crop and change your pictures
- add and removing passwords
- change the standard fonts used by Windows
- add or remove programs correctly
- Much more.
Even if you've been using Windows XP for a while, you should find some new tips and tricks in this book.

Step by Step Home Networking Win XP book order.......2003-07-24
Book in excellent condition, order received very timely, thanks
Not the best available.......2003-07-19
Since "Windows XP networking Inside Out" is available there is no reason to buy this book any longer..too simple too little info....if you get it cheap you may want to buy, but I would always prefer the above mentioned new book.
Useless.......2002-05-15
This book is useless because it assumes that everthing just works they way it is supposed to work - but alas it never does and then the book doesn't give you any clue what to do - SIMPLY DO NOT BUY IT - the XP help is more usefull.
M.Sc. IT Consultant.......2001-12-06
For advance Network Professionals this might not your book.
For novice Networking and Windows XP users this is a rock solid
book and explains XP networking in plain english and uses technical jargons very easy to understand.
The book is task-orientated with lots of examples and scenarios
to help you install and configure XP networking at home and good
advices. But again for for novices and intermediate users this
is highly recommended. Trainers might also find this book useful.
My one upset was the book does not include a CD.
scam.......2001-12-01
this book is poorly informative copy of the help text that can be found in windows xp. there is no trouble shooting context worth noting.

Very good. I bought this to use my new laptop on the go. Very helpful and easy to use.
Beginner Level Introduction to Using XP.......2005-03-23
Windows XP is, of course, the standard operating system used in most desktop PC's. Lessor known is that special versions of Windows XP have been developed for laptop and tablet PC's. This book is a description of the various versions of XP for use in such systems and how to use the various feature to get the most out of the operating systems. The book is aimed at the absolute beginner, so doesn't go into a lot of detail.
The CD supplied with this book contains far more than usually found on such CD's. This includes:
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP Software
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition software
Windows Media Player 10 software
Tablet PC Edition 2005 Tutorials for Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2
Microsoft Physics Illustrator for Tablet PC toy
Microsoft Office XP Pack for Tablet PC
Microsoft Computer Dictionary
Microsoft Encyclopedia of Security
Complete Step by Step eBook
Links to Windows XP related downloads and additional information
Lacking in content and usefulness.......2005-03-12
While I'm in general a fan of the "step by step" series from MS Press, this book is a big disappointment.
The audience of this book is clearly laptop and tablet beginning users, folks who need a little handholding in getting the most of their hardware. While the book promises a lot -- "set up your own wi-fi!" and "take your laptop to the beach!" -- it falls short in delivering useful guidance. The chapter on wireless is way too short and leaves out all the important details a beginner needs in order to get things set up. Would you believe that the whole write-up on Bluetooth, the most notoriously difficult technology on the planet right now, consists of just two paragraphs?
This thin volume is pretty much a waste of money. If you want to a get-started book on laptops and tablets, check out the "How to do everything" series, or even -- oh, no, I can't believe I'm saying this -- a Dummies book.
Easy to read and follow.......2004-12-05
This is truly a step by step guide to laptops. It was easy to read and has some very helpful hints to improve the usage of my laptops. It sure helps to have Microsoft insiders write a book we can all understand.
