Surprise! I'm reviewing Amazon. Your reviews for Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Learning Edition discuss the compiler that comes with the books, so people would naturally assume the compiler is included with the used books you're selling. It is NOT INCLUDED. Site visitors must click on details to learn that. Look, I know you don't have nearly enough billions yet to satisfy you, but play fair. Tell visitors on the review page that the compiler, the most important element in the reviews, is NOT part of the package.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2002-02-03

This package has EVERYTHING that you will need to learn V.B. 6.0 and compile executable programs on your own. The step-by-step manual goes at a good pace for someone with little programming experience. The programmer's guide book and MSDN Help Library have the information necessary for those going beyond the 'Basic'.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Those New to VB........2001-04-23

I found this book extremely helpful. I am a professor at Houghton College and purchased this book to write software for the genetics course that I teach. I had no prior experience in Visual Basic, although I have just taken a course in C++. The Step by Step guide is very helpful to orient users toward the visual basic environment, and has chapters on the syntax of the language itself, which is something I really needed. There are numerous helpful programs that come on the CDs, and I found the book extremely readable. In short, I highly recommend this book for its clarity and thoroughness.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point!.......2001-02-14

Although finding and reading a good Visual Basic book is an excellent start to ones Visual Basic career, I cannot over emphasize how important it is to get ones hands on a copy of the Visual Basic compiler. With both the book and the compiler you can quickly become comfortable with the Visual Basic Development Environment by typing in some of the source code in the book and test running it for yourself. Eventually, when you feel comfortable with your knowledge of Visual Basic you can begin writing and running your own programs. Visual Basic Deluxe Learning Edition will allow you to do just that.

A highly recommended set of materials!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start!.......2000-08-01

I was fortunate enough to have my company pay for this book for me. After finding it here for a very low price and then the rebate for owning MS Office kicked the final price down considerably.

I am about halfway through the tutorial segment and so far, I am pleased. Although it gets a bit dry at times, once you suffer through it, it does give you very useful information.

It starts off by explaining the environment of Windows and then moves into the program, itself. It introduces all the tools and windows inside of the program. It walks you through the entire process of building three programs. If you show a large desktop (I used 1024x768) and reduce both windows to be shown simultaneously, you can watch the tutorial for what to do, pause it, and then go over to VB6.0 and do it! What can be more simple than that? You get to learn by doing. That's one thing that scored this program big points with me! Later on, more advanced topics (advanced for a beginner, anyway) are introduced.

Also, since you have all of the tools you need to start programming right away, it is very useful, indeed. There are some features in the Professional and Enterprise editions that are not available in this edition, but I believe there is an upgrade rebate to move from this version to those.

Finally, this set includes the Visual Basic 6.0 Programmer's Guide, which is essentially the Bible of the Visual Basic language. It discusses a majority of topics useful in programming in VB.

All of these components add up for a great investment that is well worth any price mentioned! I started from scratch and purchased this and three other books to get my feet on the ground and this one definitely helped to get me there!

Thank you for your time in reading this review.

In 24 easy-to-follow lessons, Microsoft Visual Basic Professional 6.0: Step by Step covers all of the fundamentals of programming with VB6. The book breaks lessons down into clearly defined steps and concise discussions that assist in creating demonstrative sample programs.

A companion CD-ROM contains 84 projects, organized into 24 folders to match the chapters in the book, plus an extras folder. The sheer number of projects and abundance of source code provide a valuable resource that will help beginning programmers get started quickly.

Though it contains a complete introduction, the book avoids or simply briefs on some advanced topics like multiple document interface (which, of course, advanced programmers would need to be familiar with, though it receives only a one-page sidebar).

The discussion of object linking and embedding, while a tad Microsoft Office-centric, adequately introduces and explains a potentially difficult subject. The book also contains lessons on current topics, including DHTML and file transfer, a pleasant surprise as Richter gives these topics their due.

For those looking for a complete, hands-on introduction to Visual Basic programming, this book will provide a valuable resource. --John Keogh

Topics covered: Using the Visual Basic development environment; forms and projects; properties; exiting Visual Basic; creating a new project; running a program; creating an executable; using controls; menus and dialog boxes; variables; mathematical operators; conditional and looping code; debugging; printers and error handlers; graphics; drag and drop; file operations; modules, functions, and procedures; collections; static and dynamic arrays; string functions; text files; simple encryption; using Access databases; launching OLE-aware Windows programs; OLE Automation; the Windows clipboard; ActiveX controls; integrating sound and video; monitoring your systems memory; downloading files using FTP and HTTP; using Internet Explorer to display HTML files; working with DHTML; creating an HTML page that supports DHTML; using ActiveX controls in DHTML pages; brief discussion of preparing a DHTML project for deployment as an HTML file and DLL; ActiveX Data Objects; FlexGrid; using the CD-ROM.

This is a great reference book.
I found the sections on serial communication particularly helpful.
I'd especially recommend it to someone who is just starting out with VB6.
It may help you to avoid some bad programming habits.

Cheers.

4 out of 5 stars Guided "stepping".......2005-07-23

I'm only on page 78, and already I can tell that I'm going to enjoy and learn from this book. Not being familiar with Mr. Halvorson's work, I was a little leary when I noticed that this book was published by Microsoft Press. Dreading page after page of nearly non-human jargon and wording, I was most pleasantly surprised when I began my journey through the easy-to-read pages. If you can follow a recipe, you can learn from this book. Heck, even if you can't follow a recipe, you can still learn, as long as you're willing to do the exercises. Being a beginner in the programming field, I can heartily recommend Microsoft's and Mr. Halvorson's version of VB 6.0 training.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent from begginer to intermediate.......2005-07-20

My programing background was in C++, Pascal, and Delphi, so when I got a new job and had to learn VB 6.0 I scrambled to find a book that could teach me the fundamentals. I can honestly say that after reading this book in two weeks I learned VB 6.0. Great book for developers who are beggining or just want to refresh their knowlegh in VB 6.0, a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Why am I writing a review for this supposedly outdated book.......2005-12-10

Because Visual Basic 6 remains a very useful programming environment for me. Mr. Balena's style goes way beyond a tutorial through menu creation. He tells us about pratfalls of the Microsoft environment ( while writing for Microsoft! ) and useful ways to work around limitations of the environment. If you are still using VB6, like I am, this is a useful reference. We might want to start looking at .NET, eh?

4 out of 5 stars Staright forward walk through.......2005-09-29

Good book for the novice with some experience programming but new to VB 6. Walks through the differences between other versions, and has some nice documentation.
I would recommend.

2 out of 5 stars author shoud be banned from writing programming books.......2004-09-23

code snippets are fragmented and some variables are used without
naming their types, causing confusion in many cases.

the chapters on classes and objects and databases are worthless:
i'm glad i didn't learn objects and databases from this guy.

many explanations are needlessly lengthy and confusing.

i've documented with profane remarks so many problems in this book that are simply not sharable.

5 out of 5 stars Best VB 6.0 book I own........2004-09-19

This book is a must have for any VB 6.0 programmer period. So buy it.

Not only is this book extremely informative, but Balena writes excellently. The way he communicates the information help's make the info stick in your head.

As for the informative part Balena covers all the major bases in depth and some of the more obscude/advanced topics to get your feet wet. He also shows you different and more efficent ways to write code.

If I had one complaint is that his code is not the most readable, Balena seems to center more on condensing his code and making it as efficent as possible rather than making it readable. He attempts to offset this with comments.

But that is also a postive about the book Balena covers different ways to write a statment to make it most efficent.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Reference.......2003-09-14

I am totally new to V.B. and am attempting to write a fairly complex application straight off. EVERY time I have been stuck I have refered to this book and it has so far always helped me out. As a beginner I do not always immediatly grasp the code samples, but after searching through some more basic texts then returning to this book, I have so far always got the results I am aiming for. It is almost as though the author has looked at what i am trying to do, then sat down and written an example or two of how I can accomplish it!

If I could only recommend one VB 6 book, this would be it. Great stuff.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended.......2001-08-04

This book discussions of COM is very thorough and hands on exercises provide immediate feedback. This book will broaden your understanding of COM

2 out of 5 stars Expensive Abbreviation of VB6 Online Help.......2001-06-20

Originally I bought Dan Appleman's book on ActiveX. Intimidated by its size and by what seemd to be digressions into nowhere, I switched to this one. Not a good move. VB6's own manuals do a much better job of leading you through the paces, and contain a bit more background than found here -- though it's still not enough. The authors furnish a few step-by-step recipes, but no in-depth understanding that allows you to move beyond the limited examples or design your own from scratch. They neglect to mention COM's performance hits and offer no workarounds. Even as a basic intro to ActiveX, you'll find more in the VB6 manuals. 3rd-party books ought to supplement and enhance the original product's documentation; this book doesn't. Save time and money; no 3rd-party manual is a 100% substitute for the original product documentation, which in the case of VB5/VB6 is actually quite good (especially compared to what's in this book). Start with the VB6 online docs first, then go to Appleman's book for a deeper understanding of what's happening and what you can do with it. As it turns out, what I thought were Appleman's "digressions" were a preface to what COM/ ActiveX is about; perusing through 3 other competetive books revealed that they all use the same approach, but none are as complete or as clear as Appleman's version. This book by the Heddons is far too skimpy and incomplete to be of great use to intermediate/advanced VB users. If you want a general summary or to dip a toe in the water, save $$$ and read VB6's own chapter summaries from the online manuals. You will not be able to use the information in the Heddon book without covering most of the first 2 VB6 volumes beforehand.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for even long-time VB programmers.......2000-05-10

This book briefly covers all the relavant COM subjects, without much depth. However, I found the section on ActiveX controls very useful.

For example, the section on page 129 on setting base addresses is a rare discussion of base addresses for ActiveX controls and DLLs. Something like this subject is often passed over in other books to make room for more depth or programing examples. This book covers subjects like this in a way that is easy to understand and use.

4 out of 5 stars A broad survey of components for the VB developer.......2000-03-26

This is a well written and logical survey of COM from a VB perspective. With only 371 pages of text, it attempts to tackle a broad subject area. The level of complexity is comparable to what is expected in the VB Distributed exam (70-175), for which it is an excellent study adjunct.

I enjoyed reading it from end to end, and keep it as a reference for certain developer skills that I use infrequently. While I consider the book to be aimed at a "beginner" in COM, beginners in COM are at least intermediate level VB developers. The moniker on the cover, "for enterprise developers", is a little misleading, since serious enterprise VB developers will need more detail than is provided. However, in creating a survey aimed at broadening one's understanding of all of Microsoft's COM technologies, the Eddons are successful.

Weaknesses: The book is far too brief for so broad a subject matter. For example, a single chapter on MTS (the lifeblood of n-tier architecture performance) can only touch the highlights. Creation of ActiveX controls gets much deeper coverage. Another weakness is the (not unexpected) Microsoft optimism with respect to the performance and robustness of COM technologies. A healthy dose of caveats is lacking.

Conclusion: A good introduction to COM for intermediate level VB developers. A superb study adjunct for 70-175 candidates.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of breadth not enough depth.......2000-03-24

The authors do well to explore a broad range of issues but never really get down to the nitty-gritty of it. However, it is easy reading and if you are a COM amateur you will benefit from the content. Personal opinion: Buy Pattison's book instead.

2 out of 5 stars Adequate but too expensive.......2002-03-25

I am a university instructor who has used this book for a few sessions of an introductory information systems course, part of which covers programming concepts using Visual Basic. I will be switching to another book for my next session.

This book is better than some other introductory texts because it explains the details (with nice flowcharts) of things like IF..THEN..ELSE logic and DO..WHILE loops, and it addresses the issue of saving Projects and Forms correctly (unfortunately, this is a much trickier task than it ought to be). Some other texts don't explain these details very well or at all. One other text didn't even include AND and OR logical operators!

But there are gaps in even the few basic concepts we cover in our class. There is no mention of the ELSEIF method for using IF..THEN..ELSE statements. The author has a strange bias for using DO WHILE..LOOP but not DO..LOOP WHILE, and for using DO..LOOP UNTIL but not DO UNTIL..LOOP - and then he gives an example of using DO WHILE NOT EOF for reading a file, when clearly DO UNTIL EOF is much simpler and easier to understand (why use NOT if you don't have to?) These are admittedly just minor annoyances - but why should students pay so much for an introductory book that is just adequate?

I will be using "Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 6 in 24 Hours" by Perry and Hettihewa for my next session. It covers all the basics we need and it's much more affordable!

1 out of 5 stars Want to learn the software or how to program Look Elsewhere.......2002-02-07

The only reason I gave this book a one is because there was no lower option. The book is well organized yet goes into no detail on most operations. The author starts the text as if the reader has no knowledge of a computer what so ever. Then blazes through operations leaving out most of the power of the software, telling the reader that is what the help files are for. Yet he does state that many VB6.0 packages are on the market that don't include help files in their package of which I am the proud owner of one of these packages. The software that came with the book is corrupt and useless other than some of the sample code he has with the chapters. Most operations that are heavily explained in this book are only allowed two pages. Functions for instance are allowed three paragraphs on less than one page and leave the reader lost. String Manipulation he describes more toward "stupid computer tricks" and once you need to use these operations to test data input you are left on your own. As a stand-alone text to learn the software or how to program look elsewhere. I got the book, as it was the assigned text for a college class that has turned the class into a nightmare. Our drop rate is high and we haven't even been tested on the material yet. The only thing that has saved me is I was fluent in C/C++ and visual C++. Yet it has been quite a few years since I have programmed and the class has been an around the clock excursion. I've acquired several other texts that do explain the software and do explain operations several ways so the reader can pick a logical approach that aligns with the way they think. For what this text costs I acquired two other texts that are close to a 1000 pages each. This text is just over 300 pages and half of that are exercises. The exercises are the major strong point of the book as programming is a skill and needs to be practiced. Yet no one can short cut the information to fifteen percent of mostly what's out on the market and gain success. This text is no exception. The exercises are great but I'm sure with a little research one could acquire an exercise book at a fraction of the nearly $60 this book goes for.

3 out of 5 stars College course text book.......2000-03-18

The book is written by a math instructor and it shows. Lots and lots of exercises. Solutions in back for some exercises, No comprehensive solutions manual for other than instructors. This book follows the classic structure of a university intro programming course - intro, problem solving, fundamental of programing VB6, procedures, decisions, repetition, arrays, sequential files, graphical display of data, VERY very short blip on Database and so on. Fourth edition of same book and still basically the same (pun intended). If you want a true intro college text on VB6, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent; with lots and lots of problems for practice........1999-11-07

Unlike a lot of "do it yourself, learn anything in seven easy lessons" books, this book has hundreds of practice problems with solutions provided for about 50%.

Personally, I think it could use more problems.

Bring on the problems!

4 out of 5 stars Slightly dated, but great book with added bonus software.......2004-03-09

Visual Basic(r) 6.0 Internet Programming by Carl Franklin was published in 1998, so while it does not cover all the latest technology since 1998, it still remains completly applicable to it's target audience: VisualBasic 6 developers and Programmers. If you have already moved on to C-Sharp or VB.NET, then this book is not for you. (You might get a little jealous of the lean-and-mean code in there.)

I found this book to be very easy to read and all samples were well documented. While the samples in this book used the Dolphin Winsock OCX, the applications on the included CD-ROM also include versions for the Microsoft Winsock OCX that shipped with VisualBasic PROFESSIONAL and ENTERPRISE versions. For Visual Basic Programmers who only have the BEGINNER Version or the (Free) CCE Edition, a third party Winsock OCX makes perfect sense and the code is easily ported to any similar control with minimal effort. (The free Catalyst Socketwrench Winsock control, for example.)

This book also provides a very nice explanation (with working samples) of the common Internet Protocols (FTP, HTTP, NTP, NNTP, POP3, SMTP) directly into terms for a Visualbasic Programmer, as well as how to do basic CGI in VisualBasic for any Windows Server and how to marry VisualBasic to the (still current) Microsoft IIS Servers.

I can certainly recommend this book to Visualbasic 5 and 6 Programmers at the Intermediete level or higher. Even an expert will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars I thought the book was great!!.......2004-01-20

I always heard alot about Winsock programming but never got the big picture until I read Gary Frankin's book. If I wanted to write Winsock applications from scratch, and had a lot of time to work on it, I might trying writing them using Windows API's...

But, I don't want to make a career out of Winsock programming. My primary goal was to have two computers communicate over a facilities Ethernet network. This book showed me how to do that. I can even do it over the Internet now. I think that's great stuff.

So, yes, Gary does teach the use of a third party ocx: dsSocket TCP/IP Custom Control by Dolphin Systems at a cost of $99 http://www.dolphinsys.com/dssocket.htm . But there are others equally expensive: Socket/x by Mabry Software at a cost of $179. https://www.mabry.com/socketx/index.htm . As a programmer, if using a third party ocx saves me 3 hours of programming time, it's worth it... And, these ocx's will save you more time than that.

This book isn't about ASP & website programming like so many others are, here you'll learn how to get computers to communicate on networks. I recommend this book if this is what you are looking for...

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, but this book is not worth any amount of money.......2001-12-15

I want to learn REAL internet programming. This book relies too much on the dolphin systems dll. It is like telling someone you are going to teach them how to write a browser program, and then having your instruction be "go to microsoft and download IE6. Voila! you have a browser!".

1 out of 5 stars Title should read - How to Use a Proprietary Control in VB6.......2001-03-22

Not what I expected at all. The first part of the book was okay - the history and building of the internet. The rest of the book - including sample code - was a discussion of how to use the control the writer created. If you want to spend another $300+ to be able to do your own FTP application, this is the book for you. That's what it costs to buy the software that will allow the sample code to run.

1 out of 5 stars A Good background but based on proprietary VB control.......2001-03-21

The book gave a great backgroung to FTP, "user-unfriendly" terms, buzzwords. Unfortunately, if you are looking for code that will assist you in developing your own application this may NOT be for you...

    Book Description

Intro Programming course is estimated currently at 150-200,000 and growing. Visual Basic is taking over where BASIC, Qbasic, and QuickBasic once dominated, in the Introductory Business Programming course. That trend will continue as VB continues to encroach on other less progressive languages such as COBOL and the Basic variations listed above within CIS and Business departments. The courses that can be supported by this text are not specific to any one type of institution, since VB in a Business course is largely a functional topic needed by all types of students from 2-4 year, to Vo-Tech, to extended, to even adult education.

I NEVER ordered this book but you sent it and charged me for it anyway. I returned it upon its arrival but had to go to extreme hastles to communicate with you people. Have you re-embursed my account yet? That's the first time I've ever had a problem with Amazon, but I still love you.

3 out of 5 stars good service but need better packaging.......2005-10-04

the book was received in a good, timely manner at a cheap price
at a fraction of the cost of a new book, i am doing all my assignments and learning more about vb
the only thing that would need improvement is packaging
a cd came along with this book but since the packaging was done in an envelope it was broken in half which has prevented me from doing work at home
otherwise, this is a good seller and would deal with them again if they improve their packaging
    thanks

    5 out of 5 stars A good investment.......2004-08-03

Concise, precise and with hands-on examples of entire projects. This book is scattered with coloured screenshots to illustrate their instructions so you never have to guess what the authors mean. Targetted at the absolute beginner (in programming) but as it is a breeze to read, the more advanced reader is sure to pick up a few VB gems on his stroll through it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to start VB6.0.......2004-05-26

I was lucky to stumble across this book in Amazon.com and didn't really know what I was getting. Once reading through the first chapters and trying some of the exercises I realize this is great. The book teaches you the correct way to program in simple descriptive language. I have now leant what I need to start my own small projects and have ordered the Advanced VB6 from the same authors, looking forward to getting it. The book also comes with the learning VB6.0 CD which gets you started.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners........2002-12-18

When i purchased this book it was because i had to for a college course but i was already an intermediate programmer. Although i already knew most of the contents of the book, i couldnt help but notice if i had bought this book when i was first starting out i would have saved so much time and money. When i started i purchased 2 books one of them being from the **** for dummies collection which i would highly vote against doing and the other was too technical without enough explanation. This one is highly detailed and step by step, after each chapter it gives you a full rundown of the code with detailed notes. If your serious about learning VB6 i dont know of any other book out thatll get you programming well in such a short time.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars Only For Book, But Not For Liars.......2003-10-19

I buy this book thinking that I was going to learn something new, of course this book is an Excellent Resource for learning and a good teacher for beginners of Visual Basic 6.0 but what the book doesn't say it that will be good for a person interesting in learning this language to better go to any academy institution and study Computer Science and some programming language, because programming required a lot of math and algebra, etc so they can achive their dreams in becoming a software maker, why people are so greedy, I have ask a lot of people (software maker, developers), how I can learn and become a software maker and I have receive no answer yet, but I have learn by myself please go to college and get that Computer Science Degree. Note: Listen to this the book is the same Step by Step Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 ISBN 1-57231-809-0, Same books with different Cover I have both books, I cannot believe how people lie, Visual Basic Step by Step also by Michael Halvorson and these books are perfect twins. Computer Science Degree is what you need and a lot af Math 1+1=2 Algebra, Etc....

3 out of 5 stars Too much hand-holding and some code does not work.......2003-07-19

Overall, it is a good book for a beginner, but I wish Halverson would maybe give more of a structure by which to do more programs on our own and perhaps give quizzes. Just completing lessons does not make you proficient with any language. Some of the code in the book does not work, starting with chapter 11 and 12 and then after that, all code works (however, that frustrated me and ruined the examples which were subseqent of and dependent on the exercises which contained the bad coding). However he does give some good programming secrets that will serve as a reference for the future when I need them. I only used this book so I could get some work on VB 6.0 before going on to try VBA w/Excel which is what I am working on now. I would still recommend this to anyone, but with caution.

5 out of 5 stars So far the best VB book I could find.......2001-10-01

This book covers the basics Of Visual Basic. In easy Skill learning lessons. Personally I used to a lesson a night, Since I didn't have time. It is very informative. I would reccomend this book to anybody intrested in making a good foundation in Visual Basic.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-09-20

This was the first book I've ever read about programming and I was able to complete every single exercise in less than one month. This is an excellent book to start with for someone who has never taken any kind of programming. The CD ROM that accompanies the book permits you to create several types of programs from simple "hello world" programs to advanced programs using active X. This book has given me the confidence I need to move on to more advanced Visual Basic courses and other programming languages. I'm going to purchase the Visual Studio reference guides and the Visual Studio program before the end of the year and Ace every program in that package. This book has me thinking in code now and it's a great feeling.

3 out of 5 stars Unoriginal Approach to Learning Visual Basic.......2000-02-15

This book is essentially a rephrasing of the VB Programmer's Guide supplied with the original software, except for some more detailed handling of Advanced Techniques in the last 5 chapters (100 out of 500 pp). The examples are verbatim from the Programmer's Guide, so if you have that you don't need this.

Not much new to gain from this if you've gone through Visual Basic Step by Step.

Written by the developers of Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Programmer's Guide gives you a solid overall grounding in the language and the major tasks you will undertake in the development environment.

The book is divided into two parts and a series of appendices. The first part introduces the basic concepts of the Visual Basic environment and explains the form- and event-driven paradigm. Five chapters later, the authors explain forms, controls, and projects and give a quick primer on the unique structure of the Visual Basic language, its data types, and its use of functions, procedures, and code modules.

The second part, "What You Can Do with Visual Basic," makes up the majority of the book. A chapter on user-interface creation illustrates how to create single and multiple-document interfaces and how to implement dialogs and toolbars, and presents some general user-interface tips. Following chapters cover each of the Visual Basic custom controls, present advanced project-compilation concepts, and introduce the object-oriented features of Visual Basic.

The guide then presents ActiveX components, event and error handling, text and graphics manipulation, performance optimization, and other crucial topics. Four appendices spell out Visual Basic's limits, coding conventions, compiler options, and how to add help to your programs. No matter what your skill level, this programmer's guide will become a frequently visited companion. --Stephen Plain

    5 out of 5 stars The only VB6 book I need........2003-06-29

For 90% of the VB questions that I have I can find the answer in this book. It is a great programmers reference. Of course it is just about the Visual Basic language itself and really doesn't delve to far into using VB to program databases or anything like that. Just a good solid reference to the basics of the core language itself.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies.......2003-02-01

If your a newbie to Visual Basic do not buy this book! This book in geared towards the intermediate to advanced programmer I have been using VB for several years and take it from me, don't buy it. Even for the intermediate programmers this book makes numerous references to the Library Reference, If your serious on vb then get it too otherwise don't bother, try a website.

    4 out of 5 stars Good step-by-step book.......2002-12-12

This is a good step-by-step book for learning Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition. There are some minor mistakes in this book but overall it is a very good book. If you follow along, you should not have a lot of problems. Please note, this book is geared toward the "Professional Edition", you will need to have a strong understanding of the features of "Enterprise Edition" in order to pass the certification exams. Subjects such as the Visual Component Manager, Visual SourceSafe, MTS/COM+ are not covered or bearly covered. You will need other books in order to get a more thorough knowledge of these subjects. Visual Basic Professional Edition and/or Visual Studio Professional Edition are excellent for SOHO (Small office, home office). I have Visual Studio 6.0 Professional Edition installed on my home PC and I use this book to solve some of the issues that arrises.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book, but Not Complete.......2001-06-20

I started doing VB back on Win 3.1 and had lost touch with it after severals years. I had to begin to relearn the new improved versions of VB now for a summer job i had received. I picked up this book, and for the most part the information was very good. However the main problem i have with this book, is that if you are ever looking for more indepth information into it, the book refers you to "the Language Reference" or one of the other reference library books. I understand that you cannot have all the info in this book, but being refered to another MS book just bugged me. I mean the knowledge being online, they could have given the exact URL to find the info, instead of trying to get you to buy a 70dollar reference manual.

THe information in this book is more of an overview of all the different components, and have helped me out of a lot of binds over the time. This book is not for someone new to VB or to programming in general, there are plenty of books and online refs for those.

I have since bought the reference library, and without that as an accompanment to this book, it would have been very difficult to get most of the knowledge I have needed for my programs.

If you are looking for a good standalone VB book, look elsewhere, if you are looking for a good reference book for a outside assistance, this could be your answer.

1 out of 5 stars VB 6.0 Programmers Guide not for programmers.......2001-03-19

If you are a programmer and looking for a good guide and/or reference, do not buy this book! The examples are few and not very good. The book does not go beyond VB in explainations, or lead you to additional reference material. Don't waste your money.
