MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-350):.......2007-08-23
The writing style is somewhat dry.
The enclosed software (ISA server 120 day evaluation) and the computerized test questions make the book worth the money.
Very good book........2007-03-20
This book does not base itself in only Microsoft scenario, it covers networks and security in a wide context.
Well written, gives you the ability to deploy and understand the ISA SERVER, which by itself is an excelent software, and the environments which your are deploy in.
You don't need to be an expert in IT to comprehend this book, but need to know a little about protocols and TCP/IP.
Who buys it can enjoy a good travel through the network boundaries world.
I didn't rate it 5 for 2 reasons. First, the book says, sometimes, you have got an enterprise isa cd, but you have got the standard one.
The author, sometimes, endeavours so much in assuring your understandable of the subject that spend a few pages more than needed. Another drawback is the excess of "plan, analyse, get information" advices. It becomes repetitive through the pages.
Well, that is it, a good book and enough to pass the certification exam by yourself.
MS Security .......2006-07-14
Very nice book , I recommended it for all specialist in Microsoft networking, and systems.
preparing for exam.......2006-02-19
Very helpful for exam 70-350 and daily tasks as IT Network security administrator.
Very good exam and real world based book.......2005-12-24
I went to the MOC2824B training a few months ago and didn't like it that much. If you, like me go to the official training you will find that is very much alike. But the autors included a lot of real world notes and insights for the exam on the book that you wont find on the MOC manual. Be ready to mount the practices on a virtual machine environment or real one if you have all the hardware, you will have fun anyways. Labs are filled with very usefull skill building exercises that will entertain you and teach you big time what this great product is all about. I passed the exam last week with 894/1000, and I thank not only my experience with the product but also all the good advice from this book. If you are looking to pass the exam, this is your book!!

I suppose this is a good book. Typical Microsoft white paper with discussion related only to MS.
I've opted to take the CompTIA Security+ certification exam instead (it can be used in place of 70-298).
A must..........2006-08-21
I haven't read this yet. I'm still going through the XP book, but if this one is even close, this book is a must. An easy read and well laid out. The accompanying CDs are very beneficial also.
Horrible.......2005-07-27
Of the thousands of pages read preparing for one certification for another --- this is the worst book I have come across. Frankly I am so disapointed I may well not purchase another book from this publisher.
I am half way throught the 2nd section. I see no reason to continue...

Customer Reviews:
The BEST TRAINING KIT........2007-03-20
People interested in buying this book must know it is out of date. It was released in the age of Windows Server 2003, without service pack one. So it does not cover WSUS, but SUS. It also does not contain information about SP1 improvements and now SP2, however, it is a book about planning and implementing security strategies, which makes it a book above the time.
If you have money and are interest in security, or if you are intended to pass the exam, buy this book.
The text is clear and comprehensive. The content is pretty amazing which demonstrates de knowledgement of the author about what he writes. Such knowledgement is provenient from his experience working with Windows in exposed environments.
This is not only a theoretical guide of security, but also a practical one. The excercises hep you to understand and record it in your mind.
Finally, buy this book.
A must..........2006-08-21
I haven't read this yet. I'm still going through the XP book, but if this one is even close, this book is a must. An easy read and well laid out. The accompanying CDs are very beneficial also.
Excellent guide.......2006-02-14
Any book from Tony is probably going to be good. This book is no exception. It is very well written and organized. It covers all aspects of Windows Server 2003 security. It is not quite comprehensive as you'll need the earlier 2003 Server books (or know those topics well enough) to fully cover the test. It includes good chapter summaries and practice labs. This book will also be useful to you as a reference after you have passed the exam.
Best study guide I've read yet.......2005-08-10
This book is an excellent resource and preparation for the 70-299 exam. I've read through a lot of exam books over the years and this is the one that prepared me the best. Upon finishing this book, you feel as though you really understand the material, rather than feeling that you still have holes in your understanding, as you often do with other books. This book is comprehensive, well-laid out, and has a lot of good practice questions in the book and on CD. Microsoft Training Kit CDs are often quite meaty, and this is no exception. I highly recommend this book.
Did I read the same book as these other reviewers?.......2005-07-13
This book offers good coverage in some areas and fairly weak coverage in others. I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book should have been marketed as a study guide and not a training kit. It does contain some good to know nuggets of info, however it is far from being a complete guide on security, or preperation for the exam. I bought the book based on the reviews I read on this site and will be returning it. I can only guess that the previous reviewers work for MS Press.
On the 13th page of this book the author mentions how important the steps of kerberos authentication are, after giving an incorrect explanation of them and telling you to memorize them for the exam. (steps 1-3 are incorrect. check pg.245 of the Active Directory Technical Reference for an accurate description) Like most of the self-paced training kits from MS Press there is a certain lack of depth to the information in this book. There is alot of pertinent security information missing from this book both for the exam, and more importantly for securing a network in real life. The book seemed more like a conglomeration of useful facts for the exam than a "training guide".
A much better book in this arena is "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 PKI and Certificate Security" by Brian Komar with the Microsoft PKI Team -MS Press
I would also recommend the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory technical Reference. -MS Press
The two of these books combined will give you a complete and accurate base of information to pass this exam, and several others.

completely meets its claim.......2007-06-27
Not only all you need for preperation are inside the book but it is a very well organized book comparing to similar ones.
MS Press just kicked it up a notch..........2007-06-08
Of about a dozen MS Press training kits I have used, this is the first one to be comprehensive--and better yet, authoritative. For the first time, I used ONLY the training kit when preparing for the exam. For all other exams, I had to additionally reference MSDN, TechNet, etc. Two reasons why this book is great:
1. It is obvious early on in the book that the author, Tony Northrup, knows his stuff. You cannot say that about a majority of exam prep books, where it looks like they just copy and paste exam objectives from Microsoft's site and get diarrhea of the mouth for a few paragraphs per objective.
He was also kind enough to sprinkle throughout the book dozens of surprisingly useful tips for the exam and real world security issues. Another few books like this, and Tony Northrup just might surpass Dino Esposito and Michael Howard as my favorite authors.
2. The accompanying CD is MUCH more useful than the other training kits I have used--it has about 300 questions broken down by objective. It is not just a trial version of a MeasureUp test, and in my opinion, the questions were harder than the actual 70-340 exam.
The only two things I was not too crazy about were quite trivial: the page numbers were annoyingly chapter-based (i.e. 3-25, 5-24, etc); and the trial version of VS 2003 can only be installed once, so that will hurt resale value if used.
The bottom line is that this book does more than enough to prepare you for exams 70-330 and/or 70-340. I will definitely buy more Tony Northrup titles in the future.
Very Very confusing book.......2006-01-12
Sorry for any harsh comments. But the book is so confusing explaining even simple concepts. I got frustrated when he tries to beat around the bush to explain STRONG NAMES.
I wish there was a Amit Kalani for 70-340.
For that matter, I am not having good experience with any of the Microsoft Press books on .NET
Good .NET Security book........2005-09-19
This will be the book that you must have if you are a newcomer in .NET Security. The explanations are clear, supported by the author's own experience in the field. Also, the code is easy to follow and straightforward.
Overall, a very good book to read on .NET Security.
I rate the book 5-star without the least hesitation........2005-08-23
I just passed the exam 70-340, and this was the book I used in the last 2 weeks.
If you know how to program against .NET but don't know much about .NET security, this is really an excellent textbook and/or a reference book for you. It is written by one who knows the stuff and who knows how to explain tough stuff in plain English. It can certainly get you painlessly started on .NET security right away. I dealt with .NET security in the last 2 years the very hard way. I wish I had read such a book 2 years ago. (Well, on other hand, a book is just a book. It can't substitute real-world experience. Take myself for example, my knowledge on most topics other than CAS and WSE has probably already gone well beyond what the book covers, but I still don't think I do know .NET security very well. I'm no expert on security. So don't expect it will make you a security expert if you are not one yet, though a book like this one can make your road to being a security expert shorter and less painful)
As for passing the exam, I don't know for sure if the book alone is enough. I mean, you'll need intimate knowledge about Windows and how to program .NET before you can truly digest many topics covered in the book - remoting is a good example. The book is very easy to read and understand as long as you have the stated prerequisites (unlike in many other books, the prerequisites stated in this book are very accurate). If you understand the book, you should have little trouble passing the exam - anyway, the exam is designed for anyone who is knowledgeable on .NET security to pass. The book comes with 300 mock test questions - pretty hard to me, and I feel they are much harder than the exam questions I answered moments ago. I only had time to go over about 100 such questions. If you understand the book and also do very well with those questions, passing the exam should be guaranteed!
Despite a well-written book, it has some typos. Its definition of "collusion" contradicts what I learned of the word when studying monopoly as a graduate in economics. Due to the quality of the book, however, the typos can be safely ignored.
I rate the book 5-star without the least hesitation.

Customer Reviews:
Good Secondary Resource.......2007-06-05
This book was a good secondary resource for studying for the Security+ exam. It was often found wanting on detail and depth. It also gave only lip service to non-Microsoft operating systems (I'm almost surprised they were included at all). This book did provide good back up on particular topics to augment the primary resource for my successful study (the Sybex book). In the used market this book is cheap; buy it on that basis for a secondary study resource only.
One Text You Should Use.......2007-04-07
I find that in preparing for any of these kinds of tests that I want at least two books on the subject. While they should both cover the information you need to ever pass the test the words that they use to describe this information will be different. Just reading two versions of the same information is very helpful. Of course the book should talk about the test and of course give a sample exam or two.
This book should be one of the ones you use to prepare for the Security+ certification test. The reason is that this book is a bit more Microsoft oriented (it's published by Microsoft Press) than most of the other books and this alone presents a different set of acronyms, a slightly different line of reasoning than a more generic book.
A CD supplied with the book has the whole book in electronic format, some additional information from other books, and finally a practice test.
Good reminder of what you dont know.......2007-02-25
I recommend this book if you want to check if holes exist in your security knowledge. It is not in depth, but it throws out enough buzz words that if you dont understand something you know to go and study it. If your looking for a book to cram security knowledge with no experience this will only work as a table of contents for subjects to study. I recommend if you are using this as a refresher to read the corresponding DOD STIG guide. This should fill in any gaps that may be found on the exam.
This could only be used as additional text.......2004-06-09
This book nicely presents and explains most of comptia's security+ objectives but is unable to provide sufficient depth required in the topics to pass the test. This book can only be used as an addition to your main preparation material.
Wealth of Security Information.......2004-01-23
This book covers all aspects of security and the blueprint that CompTIA has posted on their website. If you are in need of a study or referecne guide this is the book for you!! Good luck to all the people who are striving to attain the CompTIA Security+ Certification.

The MCSE Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Training Kit is a strange book. Most serious MCSA students will absolutely, no questions asked, need this book to pass the exam... but you wouldn't want to read it. That being said, the CD-ROM has something that's key for MCSE and MCSA students--a 120-day trial edition of the ISA software itself. Considering that the ISA software costs $1,500, buying this book to install that software legally and fool around with it at your leisure is a net savings of $1,440.
The book itself is a step backwards from Microsoft's usually excellent beginners' series, and is neither fish nor fowl--it doesn't offer the gentle introduction to the basic concepts that most Microsoft training kits do, and yet it contains a howling vacuum when it comes to real-life examples. What's left is a book that outlines each of ISA's functions in loving detail, without ever telling you why you would want to use any of them.
Let's give a real-life instruction from the book to explain what we mean:
On the Cache tab, select one of the following options contained in the Cache Content section:
- If you want all content to be cached, select the All Content, Including Dynamic Content, Will Be Cached radio button.
- If you want content to be cached only if source and request headers indicate to cache, select the If Source and Request Headers Indicate to Cache, Then the Object Will Be Cached radio button.
- If retrieved objects should not be cached, select the No Content Will Ever Be Cached radio button.
See what's missing? At no point does this book actually say what the drawbacks or advantages of caching dynamic content are.
Why would you want to do it? When would it be a bad idea? What are the real-world differences between caching dynamic content and caching only the content that the headers indicate should be cached--and what option do most system admins choose? From this book alone, you'd have no idea. And this is a constant problem throughout the book. You're told what ISA can do without being told the reasons behind the options, or even a hint as to what the best option usually is.
Admittedly, most Microsoft training kits are notoriously bad when it comes to actually preparing you for what you'll face on the exam--their sample questions aren't even in the standard multiple-choice MCSE/MCSA format, for gosh sake--but they do excel at providing basic introductions for novices and are excellent refresher courses, making them perhaps the best starting points in the business for any serious certification student. This book, on the other hand, is more of a documentation of the ISA application itself--it tells you quite clearly what ISA does. The book discusses the attacks that Microsoft can automatically detect, but doesn't tell you what to look for in the logs, nor what common approaches hackers take, or even what to do when you're under a Denial of Service attack.
Which is not to say that you can't learn anything from the book--it actually has more content than many other training kits. However, it does mean that if you haven't used ISA server in the real world until now, you'll know exactly how to specify a locally bound TCP port, list, or range in the Firewall Client Applications setting.
The short version: The incredible software savings here is worth the cost of the book alone, and then some. And the book is not a bad reference for those who've used ISA in the real world--or at least have configured firewalls and proxy servers. But most users will probably install the software and buy at least one other book to pass the exam with flying colors. --William Steinmetz
Book Description
With this official MCSE TRAINING KIT, IT professionals learn how to set up and support Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server to optimize network performance and security. As they build these essential system-support skills, they're also getting in-depth preparation for MCP Exam 70-227-an elective on the MCSE track for the Windows 2000 operating system. Topics map directly to the objectives measured by the exam, including installing ISA Server, configuring and troubleshooting ISA Server services, managing troubleshooting policies and rules, configuring the client computer, and monitoring and managing ISA Server use. Students learn through an integrated system of lessons, skill-building tutorials, and self-assessment exercises. An economical alternative to classroom instruction, this kit enables working professionals to set their own pace and learn by doing!
Customer Reviews:
Great for Ref. - Awful for Exam.......2001-10-17
Well laid out (seems to be printed directly from ISA's Help system), and does an excellent job of explaining ISA's vast configuration, features and positioning. Will also make a great reference guide. However, if you plan on taking the 70-227 exam, and you don't have real world firewall/proxy experience, don't rely on this book to get you over the 70-227 hump.
This book simply does not provide enough practical scenarios or examples anywhere near the complexity of the exam. Also, testing software or questions besides the 5 or 6 at the end of each chapter is absent.
Bottom line, if you already have this book for the exam, complete it, then get another book for exam practice. Otherwise steer clear of this MSP title and use ISA's Help for reference.

Poor book for Exam.......2001-08-14
What a poor book from Microsoft Press !!!! It is useless for exam 70-227. Tons of point are missing e.g. Application Filter , Rule application order (only outbound mentioned, no inbound) !!!! It also dont tell us whole picture of ISA architecture !!! Just learn how to click click click is useless !!! Dont use this book !!! Just waste of $$$ !!!
Get ready to pass the the exam.......2001-06-08
A definite "must have" when working for your certification. The information is to the point and easily understood. I would recommend this kit to anyone wanting to achieve MCSE

MCSE Training Kit: Designing Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Security.......2006-07-04
Exactly the info I needed and saved me a ton of money
Excellent Content.......2003-09-21
I think this book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in Windows 2000 security. The book is well written, and more detailed than some of the other books that I have seen, and it can easily be used as both a study guide and a desk reference. I passed the exam with real world experience and this book, and I would recommend it to anyone.
Great study guide, but perhaps not the best one!.......2003-01-04
Windows 2000 is a much more secure product than most competing operating systems - if configured right. (Unfortunately, more networks out there are being managed by admins from the "point-and-click" school of systems/network administration.)
This book is a good study guide. However - and this is a trait of many MS Press Study Guides, particularly for the Design tests - they don't have detailed case studies, the kind you see on the real tests.
Coverage of some topics like SMB Signing, Firewalls, etc. is adequate for the test. Proxy Server coverage is overkill - it's a redundant product, and I didn't see its relevance to the test. Being a MS Press book for a MS test, the book is not obiviously not critical of MS products - need to pick up a book like "Hacking Windows 2000 Exposed" - [Joel Scambray & Stuart McClure, ISBN: 0072192623, Osborne McGrawHill] to get that perspective.
Overall, a good book (and a good test - 70-220) to complete your MCSE with and get a more-or-less Microsoft-centric view of Windows 2000 network security. Does give a good overview of most Windows 2000 security features.

Great Book!.......2002-08-25
This is a very easy book to read. The information contained within is very good and the case studies are great too.
Windows 2000 Security is a big topic - and this book covers most of it well. Good enough for the exam.
Buy it!
A must read - even if not planning to take 70-220!!.......2001-11-16
I did not take the exam for 70-220 due to a change in Microsoft policy that upgraded me to W2K MCSE status. However since I already had the book and find security very interesting and important I read it a couple of times. I found it extremely informative, well organized, and understandable. This book is much more than a step by step how to with screen shots manual that so many of the "core four" books seem to be - and you will need to look elsewhere if that is what you need, you will not learn how to install Certificate Services here. Each chapter starts with a network design scenario, presents you the theory/options and ends with the solution. Security relates to almost every action one takes on a W2K network. The first half of the book dealt with the more mundane security topics that most should already know by the time they are preparing for design exams - active directory design, group policies, dns, security groups, and file permissions. However the last half is where you learn the good stuff - ipsec, rras policies and authentication, public key infrastructure including certificate services, internet access, vpn, and securing an extranet with firewalls. I read three different books on 70-216, but this book still taught me a lot, especially about ssl and pki. The explanation of, and how to implement certificate services and smart cards was great. It also explained thoroughly about when to use a private versus public and standalone verus enterprise certificate server. I finally have a good understanding of when to use pptp versus l2tp for a vpn. Ipsec had a whole 50 page chapter devoted to it explaining in detail how to implement it. Page 413 has an excellent explanation on what goes on between a web client and a web server during ssl when logging into a secure website, and page 485 has a terrific and concise table showing all the remote access authentication protocols from Pap to Ms-ChapV2 to Eap-Tls and how to determine which to use for a particular condition and why. The chapter on securing an extranet was loaded with helpful diagrams and charts showing specific protocol/port/address/action settings for a particular firewall setup. Throughout the book there were LOTS of helpful charts and diagrams to accompany the text. I find the "making the decision" tables to be an extremely helpful learning tool - an exam cram type of summary of what was just covered. One side of the table lists what you want to accomplish while the other side lists your options. The end of chapter questions are all challenging "fill in the blank" type based on a mini case study. The answers with an explanation are at the end of the book. I was very impressed with the book. Since security is such an important core concept of networking I highly recommend this study guide to anyone wanting to learn more about Windows 2000 network security.

A Conflicted Review.......2006-04-19
My review of this book is somewhat conflicted. While I would state it would make a good book if you did not know anything about Windows 2000 Security, I find that it fails as a preparation for the 70-214 exam.
I read some of the paragraph length sentences to others at work, and they too got a chuckle out of it. The simplest of items are presented in a wordiness that would make reading Our Mutual Friend or even War and Peace akin to glancing through the Sunday comics. At the same time, many items that should be the meat of the book are glossed over in an almost trivial manner.
If this were simply a training manual, it would have received 3 or even 4 stars. While Windows NT 4.0 Server can be considered archaic, not even a full page in this text is given to security concerns during the upgrade procedure from NT 4.0 to 2000.
I would heartily suggest brushing up on upgrade issues for the exam if this book is to be your sole study guide. With only 50 questions on the exam, it would not take many NT 4.0 questions to blow your chance at passing the 70-214 exam.
A good start to learning a vast topic........2003-03-17
After reading the Microsoft Press book for the 70-214 exam, I can recommend it as a good start to learning about securing a Windows 2000 network, which covers a lot of territory. Since I am already a MCSE I do not plan on taking the exam but read the book because I am always interested in security books. The book has a lot of content and is loaded with step by step instructions and exercises, so much so that I thought it was mostly a "cook book" and light on the theory and practical experience end. The end of chapter questions were very brief and few in number. However the content covered was thorough and by and large accurate (the statements that ipsec requires certificates and that NT4.0 workstations apply the user configuration part of group policy are wrong). It was nice to see a specific example of how to use secedit and create a few basic script files. Kerberos authentication was nicely explained along with the benefits, and why and how you should upgrade older clients to Active Directory Client to get them up to NTLM 2. There was quite a bit of coverage on pki and setting up cerificate services and great examples of using Web Enrollment to obtain certificates. The usual stuff on managing groups/users, share and ntfs permissions, and user permissions were covered. Vpn explanations were fairly thorough, with especially good explanation of differences between pptp and l2tp. It was nice to find a chapter on wireless security that included a step by step example to setting up a WAP. The section on IIS security does not require you to be a guru at IIS, but gets to the point on how to implement various authentication methods to a website from anonymous to ssl and why and when to use each. Intrusion detection is a basic part of network security and using group policy to enable various types of auditing and using Eventcomb is well covered. There is even a lesson on how to set up and use a honey pot. The often misunderstood IPSEC is explained well enough that you can learn how to implement, create a custom policy, and do some basic troubleshooting. Service packs and hot fixes are an important part to maintaining a secure operating system, and chapter 14 covers how to use various tools like MBSA and Qchain to determine the need for and to effeciently implement these updates. Slipstreaming service packs and using RIS is also well explained.
There was a lot for me to like about Implementing and Administering Security, but I felt it was short in a few areas also. It could have used an intro chapter explaining the importance of security and ramifications of lack of to get the reader in the right mindset, but the first page jumps right into group policy. There could have also been an ending "put it all together" summary chapter with general tips/tricks like the top ten security blunders or how to harden a Windows 2000 server like Microsoft has on their website. I saw very little on disabling uneeded services (though the MBSA tool checks for that). There was little detail about EFS which trips up a lot of users using it by losing their data or believing it is secure when it is not. Dcdiag and netdiag were briefly covered, but these are two very useful tools deserve more - they help troubleshoot when policies are not applied correctly. MBSA was not covered in much detail either. A couple pages on the mysterious anonymous/null session account, what it is used for, how it is a security risk, and what to do about it would have been a great inclusion. Finally I thought that even though the explanation of implementing security policy and templates was good, there was very little explanation of what any of the settings in user rights or security options actually do. Incorrect configurations of some of them can lead to problems in environments with downlevel clients and NT4.0 servers.
In Summary I though the book was a good read and worth keeping, but I would be hesitant to advise anyone to use this book alone to prepare for the 70-214 exam. It would be a good book to have even if not planning to take the exam, because it explains a lot of topics required to know in more detail than you will find in "core four" books. I highly recommend the Microsoft Press Design Security 70-220 book as a possible read to reinforce/supplement topics found here. I also STRONGLY suggest spending time at Microsoft TechNet security website. It has a tremendous amount of detailed information about topics covered in the book and much more including white papers. Finally if you are serious about learning about securing Microsoft networks beyond requirements for this exam I also recommend reading Hacking Windows 2000 Exposed and Inside Network Perimeter Security as a good foundation.

Does the job but needs afew updates........2003-03-03
Having recently passed the 70-214 exam, which is new from Microsoft, I had used another book for the exam study as this one arrived 2 days before my exam. With the material contained in this book had it arrived earlier I could have used it to study for the exam.
Like most MS Press books each topic is broken down into lessons with practice labs to help you learn as you go. The cd included has a 120-day evaluation of Windows 2000 Server and the exercises coincide with the cdrom, which also has exercises on it as well.
Looking at the questions on my exam, this book came up a little short with coverage of utils like MBSA, as I several questions on the use of MBSA and there are only a few pages and labs covering the topic.
Although the book does a good job on other utils like QChain, HFNetChk and URLScan. As with any book there will areas with more coverage and areas with less coverage, which is why it is important to have multiple sources.
There is a great deal of material covered in this book and it does make a nice study tool for the exam. The cd also has a practice test generator which is a nice add-on. Overall I think a few updates are needed and this book makes a great companion with other study material.
