Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-30

Well rounded book on trading for people to gain an overview of all markets. The best ones like this are by those who actually trade.
This is one of the first I read as a beginner, where some of the things were over my head but still held a lot of interest. Re-reading it now brings out the full benefit. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Anyone knocking this book does not trade daily........2007-09-27

When I first heard the reviews of John Carter's Book ,I was a bit confused. Some people said the book was great, some said it sucks. Then I bought the book and read it. This book is a very good look at trading from top to bottom and in the middle. The people that are dogging this book must not trade at all period. These are very simple and easy strategies to follow with examples to support. PLEASE BACKTEST and USE TIGHTER STOPS, because the guy is either filthy rich or got balls of steel....I am sure Carter did not put a lot of his losers in the book but he did put some. I find it sad that people dog this guy so much. Yeah, he is greedy..very greedy, but his products are what they are, GOOD. My only complaint is his DVD's are 2400.00 and his open software indicators are copied from the Tradestation library and are 1600.00. ALL in all he has a great book and a good website with a free trial that is only 14 bucks. He has some excel downloads worth that alone. Buy this book if you want to day trade or get a better perspective of other succesful traders. You will learn a lot. Try to buy his other products 2nd hand they are too HIGH. If the guy's products wasn't so high he would be a lot more popular and respected. He has been called a snake oil salesman. He is not that,he is just a greedy salesman and a helluva trader... Great Book on trading!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-08

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it!! It covers all aspects of trading not just strategies and setups e.g. trading tools, trading mindset etc....lots of great information on futures, equities, options and forex.

4 out of 5 stars A great trader's course.......2007-08-10

This book is a great trader's course. The author tells you everything you need to know, from selecting computer hardware (this info might be a bit dated), to risk management, financial psychology, discipline needed to trade all markets. There are about 10 chapters with setups where the author shows you the entry, exit points and stop loss points and gives about 4 or 5 examples of how he successfully traded each of the setups he is showing you. My only complaint is that the author only shows 3 or 4 failures in the whole book. This might lead a person to be overconfident and think that trading is so easy a caveman can do it. :)

If the author has a dozen setups that can work in any market, and he can trade 24/7 on the global markets, forex, etc. and he applies the risk and money management techniques in his book and he only has a 6% failure rate, he should be a multi-billionaire by now.

Overall, a very good book, but the author makes trading seem a lot easier than it really is. In real life trading, unlike the book, you won't have only 3 failures for every 50 successes.

2 out of 5 stars I agree..... Don't believe the Hype!.......2007-08-07

The last reviewer covered it well.

It's the same kind of information that you can obtain easy out of other trading books. This book does not cover much on stocks more on intraday trading E-Mini SP,Mini-Sized Dow,Forex..etc.

When you go through this book it shows you mainly intraday charts 2 min,3 min, 5 min,15 min,60 min,240 min,... I hardly see a daily, weekly, monthly chart in this book. I have no understanding why he never looks at the big picture before he trades a stock or an index. It's more of a daytrading book on futures indexes than anything else. A better book to read is "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader" by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra.

Still the best book to purchase is "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" by Robert D. Edwards and John Magee , on charting and charting patterns which was originally published back in 1948. Its still the bible of Technical Analysis. I prefer the 5th Edition since it was written by the original authors and you may be able to get it used on amazon.

Book Description

Wiley Online Trading for a Living
When to get in-when to get out
Build, test & trade a winning system
Online brokers, research & market data

For those who are well suited to day trading and short-term trading, the futures market is one of the best games in town. As the original short-term vehicle, the futures market allows the trader to collapse the time frame in which he or she can reach the desired profit target-or pain threshold. As a result, wins and losses are compounded much more quickly than in stock trading-and, in the case of wins, often more profitably. The ability to gain leverage with very little on margin gives you, the trader, the ability to earn more off smaller swings. And enough home runs could allow you to become your own boss, work from home in your bathrobe, or even work from your cell phone while lying on the beach. So far, so good. But what does it take to win?

In Day Trade Futures Online, award-winning veteran futures trader Larry Williams gives a no-holds-barred view of the risks and rewards of this increasingly accessible arena. His straightforward approach to helping you determine your trading personality is the first step. Then he offers traders what they really need: strategies and tactics designed to beat the futures markets. From hardware and software setup to trading psychology and successful strategizing, this highly readable book covers all the bases needed to prepare you to trade online, including:
* Assessing your risk threshold
* Streamlining the glut of trading and price information to make it work for you
* The importance of knowing how to manage your money
* Choosing an online broker and utilizing other online resources, such as news, chat rooms, and message boards
* When to get out of your trades
* Building a system based on Larry's time-tested strategies

. . . and that's just for starters. Also included are an appendix of basic futures concepts and a select bibliography of some of the best learning resources. With good humor and brutal honesty, Williams guides you in building the trading system that will work best for you.

GET IN ON THE ORIGINAL SHORT-TERM GAME WITH BIG-TIME PROFITS

With unflinching honesty and decades of trading experience, award-winning veteran futures trader Larry Williams lends his expertise to the many aspects of futures trading online, including:
* Winning strategies
* Determining your trading personality
* The art of using the Internet
* Hardware and software solutions
* History and development of short-term trading

Praise for Larry Williams and day trade futures online

"Larry Williams, the astute and experienced trader, has presented the reader with many computer-tested patterns that should give one an edge up in the hard world of day trading. He not only gives the patterns, he explains the 'why' of market action and what it takes to be successful from a psychological and money management standpoint. This is one of the best practical books ever written on trading by a veteran trader. Buy it."-John Hill, President, Futures Truth Co.

"Larry possesses an incredible talent to differentiate between what is important in life as well as in the markets. In his book, he shares insights into market behavior and short-term price dynamics that are useful to beginning and experienced traders alike. Whereas most day trading books merely discuss the market in generalities, Larry focuses on computer-tested techniques that can actually help make traders profitable. This is Larry at his best and finest!"-Tom DeMark, President, Market Studies Inc., author of New Science of Technical Analysis and New Market Timing Techniques

"Day Trade Futures Online is another must-have Larry Williams trading book. That's because nearly all the profitable futures traders I've known have attributed their trading success to an idea or concept learned from Larry. When Larry speaks, you better listen."-Gary Smith, author of How I Trade for a Living

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe that I'm writing this review.......2006-11-05

I'll not quibble between 4 and 5 stars. I agree with the reviewer below (Mr. Coffin) that I did not get the same results that Larry got when he did the studies -- and, FWIW, like Mr. Coffin, I used Trade Station.

Larry's attitude, which I choose to characterize as "test the hell out of your trading notions, then don't worry about a thing, cause nothin's gonna be all right" (with apologies to Mose Allison) is clearly correct.

The item of pre-eminent importance is that Larry said (as I recall) that Ralph Vince said (no slouch in these matters, Ralph) first profitable open works best as an exit strategy.

Or, "Get out of Dodge with the money before the Marshall figures out you've got the dough." Try to worry yourself to death during the holding period when your holding period is only long enough to eat dinner, then breakfast. My stress level has gone way down.

True enough, I'm not trading Larry's strategies. As a side note, I will say that the strategies worked pretty much as advertised up until a year or so before the book was published, more or less. I'm not nearly smart enough to know what changed. But I know that Larry follows the precept of testing, implementing, expecting the worst today with a long term outcome of winning.

So read the book, make up your own variations, test them, find those that back test well & forward test well. Trade those, make money, be happy, and devil take the hindmost.

Thanks, Larry.

5 out of 5 stars He really trades.......2005-11-29

Most of the books on trading are written by unsuccessful traders or technicians who are frustrated traders, Larry Williams is one of the few great traders, who keeps trading and making money which shares his methods, strategies and thoughts in a book in a comprehensible way. Larry Williams is among the best and newbies and wannabes like me have to listen to him.

1 out of 5 stars Shame .......2005-11-09

I do not know why he decided to recycle his "Long Term Secrets to Short Term Trading" book. He is selling the same old stuff in a new book with a different name. Even the examples and the explanations of his setups are word to word the same. Nothing new at all. No need to buy the book.

5 out of 5 stars Updated Long-Term Secrets..........2004-08-26

Mr. Williams specializes in the S&P 500. You won't find a better or more proven trader than Mr. Williams. He is very generous with his techniques and trading methods, complete with well researched studies of successful trades. His ideas can also be applied to other trading vehicles. You can't lose reading any and all of Mr. William's books. Well worth the purchase price, as you are capturing over 35 years of successful and documented trading experience. This is the updated version of "Long-Term Secrets To Short-Term Trading", with some new material added.

1 out of 5 stars Trade Options Online.......2007-01-16

FRom your description this sounded like a very good book since I am interested in trading options. Lo and behold I find out this book was published in 1999 and in 8 years lots of new things have been developed. You should have mentioned in your promo that this book was written 8 yrs. ago. I got ripped off. Just be honest with your descriptons. Les Lerner

4 out of 5 stars Good primer but not very useful for traders.......2003-07-08

This text contains a lot of information on online trading in general and trading of options in particular. But be careful, you need to know more than that to succeed in this business. Although this book will tell you how to go about placing your orders and which option strategy is good for which situation, making money comes down to predicting the behavior of your stock price and volatility, something you will have to learn elsewhere. Incidentally the book was most likely written to increase subscriber base of the author's website, so don't let your guard down.

2 out of 5 stars Time value of that book is zero.......2002-03-16

First 8 chapters give you a very superficial introduction to the options trading and some strategies. Let me repeat - very superficial. If you want to learn that matter, you definetely need another book.

So, I was trying to get usefull info on the WEB resources. Let me tell you - two years make a big difference in the Internet world. Many sites do not exist. Some of them have nothing in common with the description, which you find in a book. Chapter 9 - "cybervesting from A to Z" is a complete waste of time and is full of frustration. It guides you through interfaces of nonexisting web pages. The pages, which, according to th author, answer the crutial questions of a trade. I lost most of time just to verify nonexistence of the referenced resources.

2 out of 5 stars Decent Introduction to the Options Arena.......2001-11-27

I won't pretend to be an expert option trader. I'm in my third year of seeking a bachelor's, and the degree will not be very finance or investing related. This is the first book I read about options, and it successfully heightened my interest by introducing me to some basic option strategies. Another success of the book is the advice it gives on how to initiate and monitor trades throughout the trading day.

Unfortunately, the only people with time to check these complex positions each and every minute are multi-million dollar hedge fund managers (such as the author). The rest of working class America and I can only check our investments on occasional evenings. My guess is the average reader does not have the time or the stomach to sit on pins and needles every day wondering if it's time to exit their risky positions. The only advice the author lends about early exits from trades is that if the stock looks poised to move against you then get out.

Also, the author tells us to start looking for trades based on increased media coverage, high volume, and/or price volatility. This sort of herd following mentality is what I think leads to the massive market swings which cable commentators and industry insiders pretend to understand but incorrectly predict on a daily basis. If the author could truly capture these wild swings, writing this book would not be necessary.

Even the author's own website (after buying expensive extra services) does not search through all optionable stocks to find volatility skews that would make the pie in the sky trades illustrated throughout the book possible. The "platinum" site lets you pick a stock and then see what you can do with it. The odds of randomly finding a stock where you can risk less than $75 and possibly gain over $400 with a 15 point spread of profitability (chapter 8, long condor), are close to a needle in a hay stack.

Applicable advice to average investors is something this book truly lacks. Modifying simple stock ownership with options is not discussed. All of the option strategies included contain absolutely no stock positions (long or short). Trading within IRA's was important before the maximum contributions started being increased, but now they will become more important than ever. I suspect the rankings of brokers in the book and on the author's website are based more on advertising compensation than usefulness to individual traders. The rankings refuse to recognize the lowest-commission-charging online brokerages, and left out completely is the issue of assignment and exercise fees. Assignment and exercise fees can range from 15 to 30 dollars - per contract ... emphasis on per contract. I chose my current broker (not on any ranking list) only because they do not charge those fees.

In a final derogatory note, the seventh chapter contains text that contradicts itself when explaining the ratio call spread and the call ratio backspread. I had to reread the chapter a few times to sort out where the errors are, and what those positions entail.

Again, the book did shed light on an area of investing I knew little about, and intrigued me enough to want to learn more. Yet by sporting a sexy neon cover and depicting life from the point of view of someone managing millions, this book and others like it will probably keep average people thinking of options as risky, scary, and strange. Other than giving me a basic understanding of some common ways to trade, all this book really accomplished was motivating me to write a better one.

3 out of 5 stars Please Read This Review Carefully.......2001-09-29

This book is only a decent overview of options trading. Its pluses include its concise descriptions and profit/loss graphs of different option strategies and invaluable information on finding an online options broker. HOWEVER, it leaves the reader with unrealistic expectations (like all of Fontanills' and Optionetics' materials) in that ALL of the trades in the book are profitable. Take it from someone who has learned this personally -- options trading is NOT a "get rich quick" scheme. Should you choose to try it you will have MANY unsuccessful trades. A book which is very easy to understand, yet which provides valuable guidance on WHAT CAN GO WRONG is Max Ansbacher's _The New Options Market_. I sincerely recommend that book because it is able to describe the pitfalls of options trading in a manner which I've not found in other books. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-03-27

I have read lots, and lots, and lots, of trading books. Most of them are not that great but contain a few valuable nuggets here and there, so they are all worth reading to me.

This book is nothing BUT valuable nuggets. It is well thought-out and well written by a widely recognized successful trader/trainer/manager. It really captures the essence of what short-term trading is all about, of which daytrading is a major component. It's a trading book for traders by a trader. Those just wanting to swing-trade, well, ...good luck. Professional traders trade, period. Good swing trades are found by actively trading, from a daytrading perspective.

Yes, the trading landscape has changed when we went to decimals - for the better! What is discussed in this work transcends the eras. Therefore I consider it to be a 5-star classic. It is not for beginners, it is for stock traders who are constantly wanting to improve. It does not give specific trading set-up tactics that become outdated.

Not much has fundamentally changed in the markets since the tech bubble. Those mastering the concepts in this book will be ready to get rich from the next wave of irrationality in the market, whichever way it goes, and in the meantime can still make a nice living. It belongs on your shelf if you are serious.

3 out of 5 stars A NEW EDITION WOULD BE WELLCOME.......2006-02-25

Before all I want to say that many topics are given for granted and I find the book not really easy for a beginner. Markets have changed a lot since this book was written and many chapters need revision having in mind that many readers are non native speakers of english and have no idea of many topics given for granted

1 out of 5 stars another nassar piece of garbage.......2005-12-30

if you read these books and follow his fluff then you will be robbed of your money by professionals like me. trading takes advanced and sophisticated methods not capable of being properly expressed in a book targeted to the masses. people spend years educating themselves to be able to pick money from the inexperianced, like those who buy this book. best of luck and you can find good use for the book proping up a table of starting a fire after your done reading it

1 out of 5 stars Mismatch between Title, book description and content.......2004-01-06

I bought the book based on excellent reviews here and very attractive description.

However, I have been very disappointed because the content does not reflect the attractive title and description. The book is almost 100% for daytraders trading with level II screen. This is not said anywhere. "Online" does not mean exclusively daytrading to my opinion. It keeps on repeating "be disciplined" to fill space. One of the example of trade record given does not fit the explanation given in the text. For example, the trader made most of his profit in a single swing trade lasting several days whereas Nassar wants to show us that the guy is a good daytrader...

Another interesting thing: This book is not for beginners but it describes in fact very general basic rules... in a tough style that assumes that the reader already knows almost eveything.

When you read the table of contents, it looks great: how to enter, to exit, etc... but none of this is given in the book. No techniques are given.

Conclusion: This book could be fine if the description was fitting the content. It is for daytrader watching level II screen and who trade instinctively.

2 out of 5 stars not particularly useful.......2003-09-19

Although this book has a copyright date of 2001, it apparently was written in early 2000, just at the start of the NASDAQ crash that ultimately resulted in a loss of over 75 percent of its value. Consequently, the author refers to a period of time when stocks traded in fractions, and high-flying tech stocks trading in the triple digits were "momentum" traded by daytraders. After the crash, many of those tech stocks trade in the single digits, all stocks now trade in decimals, and the "momentum" daytraders and their daytrading brokerage firms are now history. The author makes numerous references to "shadowing the axe" using Level II quotes to determine who is on the inside ask or bid. Nowadays, ECNs virtually always sit on the inside ask and bid, making it impossible to utilize that strategy. Even if a market maker had a large enough position to sit in front of the ECNs, he most likely would route much of his order to an ECN where it would appear anonymously in order to disguise his intentions.

The problem with writing a book about trading strategies or systems is that the markets are constantly changing, and trading systems become obsolete and must evolve over time. What doesn't change is the emotions and psychology of the people who compose the markets. The author states numerous times that trading is about 90 percent mental. While this is in fact correct, he then only briefly touches on the mental and psychological barriers that must be overcome in order to trade successfully. The best books on trading understand this, and are devoted almost totally to this subject.

There are also numerous inaccuracies. At one point, he details a month of trades from an "anonymous" daytrader who allegedly made 731 trades during the month, of which 377 were winners, with those trades averaging $93.03 profit. He then claims the trader netted $68,001.35 for the month. If you think about it for a minute, this is a mathematical impossibility. Also, he makes the typical mistake in believing a broadband connection is necessary to receive timely streaming quotations. Broadband speeds up downloads only with large size files. Streaming quotes do not fall into this category. I have timed my quotations against a T1 connection using an atomic clock accurate to 1 millionth of a second and have detected no difference. I do not use broadband, as it is not available in my area.

If in fact the author is a successful trader, it would have been much more productive for him to detail his own evolution as a trader, as well as the evolution of other specific successful traders he has known. This is the information that would be most useful to new traders. Unfortunately, the author only briefly discusses a few of his own trades, and gives no information whatsoever on the path he traveled to reach competence, assuming he has reached that level. It would also be interesting to see how he is trading in the post-bubble market, if in fact he is still trading successfully.

Day trading such stocks as Amazon.com, eBay, and Yahoo! sounds like a game for the gun slinger: jump into the fray and pull the trigger. Is that really the case? No, according to author Christopher Farrell, who earns his money just as Wall Street does--by making very small, short-term, high-percentage trades. Farrell, who works from home, has traded over 15,000,000 shares of stock via the Internet, producing a 65 percent annual return for his investment fund in its first year. Using detailed, user-friendly examples, Farrell shows how to place orders online and then sell minutes later for small profits that can potentially add up to thousands of dollars a day--if you pick the right stocks. He explains how the New York Stock Exchange allows traders to buy on the bid and sell at the offer, just like the professionals. Farrell also includes loads of tips, such as how to choose an online broker, how much to pay for commissions, and how to cope with a technology that's still in its infancy. If you've been thinking about joining the estimated 5 million online traders, then this book is for you. --Thom Hartle

Book Description

The explosive growth and low cost of online trading has created a new class of investor who can now make a living buying and selling stocks over the Internet in a way that was once reserved for Wall Street's most powerful brokerage firms and investment banks. While technology has made entering the "major leagues" easy, staying in is not. Before taking to the fast-paced, high-risk playing field, it's absolutely essential that you have a firm grasp of the rules and a solid game plan. Day Trade Online is the play book novice competitors need to become strong contenders. Written by seasoned practitioner Christopher Farrell, it is a one-stop, step-by-step overview of how to make a successful living, whether full- or part-time, trading via the Internet.
Day trading can be quite lucrative, but only if you know what you are doing. As Farrell points out: "Trading for a living is hard. Trading for a living over the Internet is even harder. There are many challenges and obstacles that confront you. Venturing into this jungle unprepared is a recipe for disaster." This straightforward guide provides the head start and heads up necessary to thrive as an Internet day trader, covering everything from the dangers and pitfalls of trading online to an in-depth analysis of which trading techniques work and which don't.
Day Trade Online presents inside information on the strategies of top trading firms, including the most secretive, misunderstood, and profitable function on Wall Street: exploiting the bid-ask spread. Which stocks to trade - and which to avoid. Beating the specialists and the market makers at their own game. The dangers and pitfalls of online brokers.
Most importantly, you will learn to look at ten different stocks and pinpoint which one to trade, when, at what price, and why. With the right know-how, you will then be able to apply this knowledge to every single stock that you screen.
Written for the day trader, by a day trader, this is indispensable reading for anyone looking to join an increasingly popular - and profitable - arena.
"I see the ads on television. Open an account and your first trade is free. Trade as many shares as you'd like for one flat fee. Free real-time quotes. Free market research. Trade stocks. Trade options. With the click of a mouse. It's that easy. Anyone can do it . . . I think back on my time on Wall Street. Does the little guy really have a chance?" - from Day Trade Online.

1 out of 5 stars you will not be a day trader if you read this book.......2007-09-11

The content of the book can be sumed as: In low volatility stocks, a day trader exploits the spread by using limit orders instead of market orders. In this way, the day trader trades with the market maker and makes teenie profit everyday.
This book tells it over 230 pages. It repeats himself many times. It was not useful. You had better choose another book.

2 out of 5 stars help me I have fallen and I can't Get up!!!!.......2007-08-29

This book is had way to me fractions for me!
But 1/8 this, Buy 1/9 this, sell 5/10 that

WHO IS THE AUTHOR TRYING TO ATTRACT AS READERS!

Also the author tells you not to do home work, Sorry people but even a day trader should now whats going on in the market. You invest time knowing your trade (profession) and no matter if I choose to be a day trader or long term investor, I believe you must know your profession and how it works.

I do not recommend this book to beginners or mild investors wanting to day trade. This book is for someone???? Well I am sure it is for someone, just not me. AND I DO MAKE MONEY DAY TRADING!

4 out of 5 stars Motivational.......2006-11-11

After reading the book, I was so motivated to go and make money. However when I went to trade I discovered that the spread is so thin ! A cent for that matter. Has the rules changed or am I doing something wrong?

3 out of 5 stars The Concepts are cool even if they be tricky..........2006-04-02

Christopher's strong suit is not concise writing. The repetition may push you over the edge but if you can hang with it, you will get several insights about the inside of the market. I've been trading for a little over a year but have not yet attempted this method. I'm sure that even in 2006 it will work but it will be more work than when the book was written.

I think one of the most important contributions this books makes is the insight it provides to the 'specialist.' That's a guy that we all need to know about, whether we're trading teenies or pennies!!

1 out of 5 stars It's a CRIME that this book is still for sale........2006-03-19

The publishers should be sued. Maybe we should get a class-action together.

Imagine taking an instruction manual for the very first Apple computer and putting a new title on it "How to use your new home computer" and selling it in bookstores today. This book is doing EXACTLY that!

Also, it is highly doubtful that the tactic ever worked in the first place. The author's website vanished years ago. In a thinly traded NYSE stock if you try to repeatedly front the specialist with 2000 share orders he will simply move the price 50 cents against you immediately following your next purchase. Game over.

      Product Description

Futures trading legend Larry Williams provides a practical overview of online futures trading. He offers step-by-step guidance on how to use the Internet to mine and expolit key news sources and price information. For those who are well suited to day trading and short-term trading, the futures market is one of the best games in town. As the original short-term vehicle, the futures market allows the trader to collapse the time frame in which he or she can reach the desired profit targetor pain threshold. As a result, wins and losses are compounded much more quickly than in stock tradingand, in the case of wins, often more profitably.
