Customer Reviews:
Great Author.......2007-09-11
Learn alot from the book about Project management. It does not only apply to management but apply to daily life. It teaches you more than there is. Definitely recommended. Like the CD and the material.
Great buy!!!!!.......2007-03-08
The book got to me in a timely manner and was in great shape.
Book is Fine.......2007-01-09
What can I say, the instructor required this book, so I purchased it. Well laid out. Broken down into sections that make sense when learning project management. The examples in the appendix could be done a little better, but the appendix is already over 100 pages. Wish it would have the Index on CDROM for easier searching, but overall it is a good book.
Great book .......2007-01-04
I used this book as the accredited book for my project management course in my master study, actually it is a great book, I did not get enough time to read it all, but it really covers all the project managemnt subtitles, I recommend it for those who have project management experience, and also for those who just need to know something about project manegment, but you make sure you have time to read, it is not a small before sleep book, it is really technical one.
Excellent additional book for CAPM or Project + Exam.......2006-10-14
I was issued this book for my project management class this past spring. The information contained in this particular book was detailed, and the author provided great examples plus a 120-day trail version of MS Project management software to add in practical development. I am using this book as additional information to pass the Certifed Associate in Project Management exam offer by the Project Management Institute.

Customer Reviews:
don't judge the book by its looks.......2007-01-13
it's a thick book but doesn't have much depth and the way they cover the material will put most to sleep. An expensive >$100 database book should be much better.
read the first 5 chapters so far.......2007-01-11
I bought this book for a graduate level database management course. It starts off with the very basics. Thankfully, my professor breezed through the first few chapters. Overall, the content is good and I would recommend it for anyone who wants to learn the theory behind database design and management.
The Bible for Database Systems.......2006-12-11
This is an excellent and thorough analysis of database processes involving transactions, concurrency control, security and covers relational tables, object-relational dbs as well as object oriented technology. There is a thorough overview of UML as well as ER design tools. It is a tough read and covers alot of material and is very theoretical but practical. Relational algebra and calculus are covered thoroughly. This is recommended for an advanced database course as it's coverage of SQL is coarse and cursory. Instead this book is intended more for a behind the scenes analysis of database technology. An excellent database course as a prerequisite for using this book would use Mannino's Database Design, Application, Development and Administration. Mannino's book has an excellent coverage of SQL and its applications.
A confusion of purpose.......2006-11-27
This 1100 page tome of a book is a case study in what happens when you try to be all things to all people. There's a good book on database theory in there somewhere (most of chapters 5,6,10,11,...), and there's a good book on database design and practice, and there's a good book on database implementation.
This book, though, is none of those good books. Instead, it is a gigantic bunch of unmotivated information that lacks any kind of focus or goal. It's impossible to read about database theory without being lectured about ER and EER diagrams or wading through "business" examples with employees and payroll systems. It's impossible to read about database design without encountering extreme formalism in the descriptions of the normal forms. The information needed for implementation is scattered so sparsely that one would be well-advised to find another book (preferably that weighs less than five pounds).
Decent book.......2006-11-11
This was a good book for what was required for the class I took.

I taught this book at university...........2007-09-05
.
If you need a book for certification, this isn't it....it is so much more than that.
This was the consensus choice of the faculty for the database foundations class when I taught information systems at university.
Of late, when I interview entry level database developers, I can tell whether or not they used this book or a recent version when they started to study database design. If they did not, they lack a comprehensive knowledge of the field. Those with the various certifications know enough about their specific application, but frequently, they can't figure out problems that haven't been covered by the certification training. Their conceptual knowledge rarely expands beyond their chosen application.
If you want a solid conceptual foundation of database design...this is your book.
Normal text book.......2007-05-09
Just a normal text book. I felt that some of the stuff was very well explained and some wasn't.
I think they did a real good job of explaining normalization but I disagree that Fourth Normal Form is a necessary thing. Third Normal ought to get you where you ought to be in a database.
The code examples did not work with my version of Access. This needs to be addressed. Maybe put a note on code examples which work and which don't work with Access 2000. I suspect they also did not work with Access 2003 and 2007.
Awful for a beginner.......2006-08-29
This book is hard to follow and seems to ramble on with examples in bad detail. It trys to stuff years of database theory in 321 pages, I came out wondering if I really learned anything.... I do not recommend for a beginner.
Excellent book.......2005-09-08
This product is great for beginners or people who have experience in Access. The explanation for how to do certain things is excellent.
Excellent for database concepts ...But! .......2005-08-03
As an online student (last quarter), I found this book to be helpful learning about databases and their operation. However sometimes due to the examples, it is difficult to follow the writer's thoughts. Also it would have been very helpful if the book contained a copy of the database that is used in the examples, so that I could try out the examples. Or at least offer the database online from the publisher!

Customer Reviews:
Decent introduction to MIS, but misses on some issues.......2001-12-21
I used this book in a graduate level course on MIS. It was a decent introduction to the subject, but I would really expect the book to be used more at an undergraduate level; as others have noted, it does not delve too deeply into any areas.
My biggest complaint about this book is that it simply misses the point on a couple of issues, both technical and business. Its discussion of internet technologies contains many of the "newbie" mistakes one would expect from someone just learning about HTML, HTTP, XML, and web programming, especially Java. It also has a section in one chapter that goes into marketing and in my opinion misinterprets some of the foundational concepts.
Two things I do like about the book are
1. It covers ethical issues within MIS, which is a developing topic and one that deserves attention. Every chapter has anectdotal stories highlighting ethical delimas.
2. Each of the 5 Parts of the book starts with a case introduction, and each chapter starts with an expansion or continuation of that case. The case exemplifies some of the issues that will be discussed on subsequent pages, and brings a level of reality to the subject that I enjoyed.
Not a bad book, but by the same token requires an instructor who really knows the subject well to separate the good parts from the bad for the students.
The second edition is great!.......2000-02-23
The 2nd edition of this book (whose cover is NOT shown here) is great
It's Pretty neat........2000-02-11
This book has a great cover, however I was thrown a little by the pages. and, oh yea it's a little outdated.
cheers

Customer Reviews:
Poor structure, layout and uninteresting.......2005-09-19
The book references numerous sources for seemingly no reason, and constantly repeats what a qualities a good IT manager must have. It is a huge challenge to gain anything of value from the book.
Excellent.......2002-06-06
The sell was great. I experienced no problems and was alerted every step of the way until receiving the book. She kept her word about the condition of the book. I would not hesitate to buy another book from her.
Too vague messages from the book!.......2001-02-20
The book is of poor structure which is very difficult to get the clear concept from the author. Reader needs to spend great effort to analyze the content structures to reorganize the focus.
repetitive information is presented in the book.......1999-04-19
I have covered the book completely, and I have found that the information presented in the chapters is quite repetitive in contents. Even within each chapters there are lots of repetition of information.
The book can be presented with half the chapters and pages currently contained in it.
Therefore, the reading of the book was very tedious and tiresome.

Get a different book.......2007-08-26
I had to use this book for a sophomore class in college and let me tell you, this is the worst book ever written. Every time I would read this book, I would immediately fall asleep within 10 minutes. Then, I would wake up and try to read some more and fall back asleep. This book threw my whole sleep schedule off and I'm not exaggerating. First, the book is hard to follow. Second, when the author tries to describe something or use an analogy, it makes no sense whatsoever. Some of the vocabulary exercises at the end of each chapter aren't even covered in the chapter. Luckily, I already knew 90% of the topics covered in this book and still got an "A" in the class, but I would suggest buying a different book unless this book is required in one of your college courses.
Outstanding content for qualified professionals.......2006-09-30
I've been a fan of Dr. Burd for many years and this text reaffirms my respect for this author. This is not a book for the casual practitioner. Rather, it is a professional in-depth look at systems architectures, worthy of its adoption at many colleges and universities.
I can see how some laymen are put-off by books like this that are targeted at graduate-level earning, especially those readers without the requisite knowledge to appreciate Dr. Burd's insights and observations.
This is a book for the worthy scholar, not the dilettante. If you are a professional who wants a through and insightful overview of systems architectures, this is the book for you.
Good Job.......2005-09-03
I am very pleased with this purchase. It arrived promptly and is exactly what I needed.
Thank you.
misnamed misleading .......2005-06-15
this is not a book on *SYSTEMS* architecture.
Like that book on Enterprise (SIC) architecture that was all about LANs and not the entire enterprise , this book has too narrow a viewpoint.
The title should be changed so it is not misleading. The author's perspective may be *his* system but to most of us this stuff is at best a subsystem, or merely a component, or otehr lower level item.
if you want to know about SYSTEMS architecture the key book is rechtin and maier. there may be a recent handbook of SA that covers a number of topics but eb and mark have the only real systems architecture book that I have verified.
this book is not the book the title claims.
Decent Read.......2005-02-23
I've been a professional software engineer for over 20 years and recently took a grad course that used this book. I can honestly say I was somewhat dismayed when I read the 2 previous reviews and had to plunk down the cash to buy the book just the same.
Overall, I thought the author's style was easy to read and understand and I thought the book flowed well. The content was, for me, a nice review of topics that I haven't encountered in quite a while in my day to day activities.
Unlike the other reviewers, I don't have any clever one liners that I want to see in print next to my name or want to trash the whole book because of one or two shortcomings.
The book is not "great" but, IMHO, it is pretty good for classroom work. The author does get a little loose with terminology and, at times, you'll encounter some ambiguous content that you have to work a little to get through.
As I said previously, it was a fairly easy read which counts for a lot with me. A lot of these text books are technically accurate but are also a royal pain to try and read while staying awake.
The author (apparently) has a teaching tool available to instructors only that generates test questions. Some of the questions are ambiguous but that generated classroom discussions on the how/why they were ambiguous so we learned more that way as well.
For me, this book was definitely worth it but, then again, I wanted to learn -- not just write a clever and scathing review.
Average customer rating:
- Easy Read compared to most tech type manuals
- Good for those who want to learn
- This is a great book for study!!!

Easy Read compared to most tech type manuals.......2007-02-19
I found it easy to read. Definated recommendation
Good for those who want to learn.......2004-09-08
I ordered this to start on my MCSE certifications. It is a great begining place, but definetely is not for people who are just starting. To understnad this book, you need some basic computer knowledge. The included tutorials and web references are great for those who really want to get in depth with the material. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn.
This is a great book for study!!!.......2004-07-11
I just buy this book about two week ago, it really really good book. Because I just my A+ Core Hardware part. I recommand this book for study for the A+ Test. In this book have a lot of picture, that help you to understand.
That it, now i gonna go to test my OS part.
A great buy!.......2003-10-04
With the help of this book I passed the A+ Core hardware today with a score of 799. The content is delivered in an easy-to-read, engaging format and the chapters kept my interest. The book covered everything that was on the exam. I like the end of chapter review questions - these helped to solidify the material that I read in the chapters. There were a few typographical errors as well as a chapter where the figures for the review questions were not numbered properly. However, this did not diminish the effectiveness of the book. It was worth the money and I'm glad I bought it. Use this book + measureup questions and you will definitely pass your A+ exams.
Proved to be effective once again!.......2003-09-09
I just got CompTIA A+ Certified. I passed the OS Exam this morning, with a score of 772, the exam stopped at the 24th question. This book, once again, had helped me a lot in passing the exam. I found some mistakes on some chapters, both on the lessons and the practice questions, but they are obvious and you will be able to figure out which is correct. The PrepLogic Practice Tests are helpful too, even though they are only the Preview Editions. I also have a little experience troubleshooting PCs and i think that helped me too in passing the exam. This book covers all the objectives in detail. I find myself looking at the objectives foldout on the first part of the book, on how many chapters i have left to study. I went to a local store yesterday and browsed on other books that i could find for A+ and Network+, and saw a lot of Sybex books. They seem ok for me, has more pictures of stuff, but when i looked into the objectives list, various chapters cover various domains, which i did not like, i don't know if those books are good, but i know THIS book was really helpful... most books that I found for A+ are already for the new exam coming out, 220-301 and 220-302 i think, Sept 12 will be the change date to the linear (non-adaptive) exams, which has i think 72 questions, including 2003 objectives questions, but does not count to the score till november 2003. Good luck on your exams!

Customer Reviews:
The best textbook for MIS majors that I've seen.......2006-12-07
First let me disclose that I have been a programmer for years (and for some of the businesses described in the book).
In general the book is good.
Pros:
It summarizes the business end of ecommerce very well.
The book covers most of the technical aspects of ecommerce from a high level.
The book is not about abstract, useless business theory that is common in many university business courses; the book is a collection of good case studies of ecommerce.
Cons:
The book chews more than it can swallow given the pace it needs to set for a normal class. Since it needs to stay at certain length, the book doesn't always do a good job explaining the technical aspects of ecommerce with enough detail from a layman's point of view. At times it is more of a review for people already with the knowledge. So unless your technical background is strong and deep (eg you are either a programmer or systems administrator for web servers), there may be a lot of jargon in some areas that will confuse and bore you. Consequently this is probably a senior year book
(The author should take notes from the HeadFirst series of technical books.)
Alot of good information, but not what it should be.......2005-08-04
My heart goes out to Ben Matthews (below) who had this thing for a level 4700. That's nuts. I had this book for a level 222 and it was a complete joke. There's a lot of good information and stories about what makes a good e-commerce site, I'll give it that. But there's nothing in here to really give you an edge as far as this stuff goes. The entire point of this book can be summed up in this statement:
"Look at amazon, look at google and look at yahoo. Look for reasons why they're successfull and take note. Do the same practices in your online sites".
This book is an interesting read, but for a bunch of stories and business jargon it's not worth the money.
Nothing but an e-commerce glossary..........2004-02-03
This book serves as an introduction to e-commerce terms and principles. To me, it reads like a shallow glossary of a large number of e-commerce terms.
Do not get the impression that this will teach you how to carry out e-commerce. Instead, this book merely introduces you to e-commerce terminology. For that, the book serves its purposes, but for anything else, you may be better off looking elsewhere.
I thought it was very expensive considering the fact that all of the information could be found in e-commerce summaries for free on the internet.
A Good Ecommerce Textbook.......2003-04-17
I teach ecommerce at the undergraduate level. I plan to use this book as the backbone for the class. The objectives are tied to the e-Biz+ certification exam from CompTIA, which is a nice feature since CompTIA does a bang-up job on researching the skills needed for entry level employment.
I like the book mainly because it offers the primary business concepts needed by my technical students before they enter the IT job market. My students can't take a lot of business classes, but they still need to know the business side of things. This book gets them the essentials in a one semester format.
Ecommerce is rapidly changing, so it will be tough for a book to keep up. I haven't seen the web site that accompanies the book yet. Hopefully it will be a good supplement to help stay current in a rapidly changing field. The book has a lot of web sites as examples, which can be a mixed blessing since web pages change constantly.
Teachers - the book says it has the usual instructor supplements for classroom teaching as well as online teaching, but I haven't seen them yet. I am using the stuff from the 3rd edition to prepare for my summer class - you will probably need to choose wisely as you review these supplements since they are of mixed quality. I am giving the book 4 stars instead of 5 since I can't vouch for the supplemental materials at this point.
Best and Most Current Textbook Available.......2000-11-06
This is, without a doubt, the best and most current textbook on electronic commerce that is available today (and I understand these authors are planning to have a second edition of the book completed by February 2000 - which should be even MORE current).
The book offers a balanced business-technology approach to the subject of e-commerce and include a great overview of both relevant technologies and business/revenue models. The book includes important issues like legal and international concerns and even has a great little section on managing and staffing Web development projects in the last chapter.
This is the only book on e-commerce that I have seen that actually creates and uses a theory-based organizing framework (they build on Porter's work on value chains). Even though the book was clearly designed to be used in the classroom (it has problem assignments, exercises, and an extensive list of references at the end of each chapter), I think this book would be an excellent resource for a business manager that wanted to learn what all of this e-commerce stuff was all about OR for a techie that wanted to learn something about the business end of e-commerce.
The book is a very easy read and is remarkably interesting (even the chapter on security theories is pretty hard to put down... and that is some dull stuff, usually). The book includes bolded company names throughout and each of those names is included on the book's Web site as a hyperlink to the company site. This is very useful because you can see the examples that the book mentions come to life (if you can read the book while you're in front of your computer)...
I would recommend this book to any reader that wants to learn more about electronic commerce than you would find in a light overview book. This book gets into details, but in a very readable way.

A multiple vision of IT Security.......2006-03-23
This book is an excellent example of compilation of dozens of good works on IT Security. The quality of articles and the different points of view whereupon are treated turn to it an essential work. It only has a failure: such amount of information has been packed in only a volume that has forced the publisher to reduce both the font and the thickness of the paper to the maximum. Very bad for that no longer we have twenty years and in addition we were used to mark the most interesting paragraphs with a pencil.
Book content is excellent, but paper quality is worst ever.......2005-12-16
I am reading the fifth edition of this book. In the earlier editions the book was published in three or four volumes. The fifth edition is a combination of all volumes. So that is good.
The book is a dense read. But the content is excellent. There are 163 chapters in this book. Each chapter written by different authors - experts in respective areas. So the book provides a best of breed treatment to various assorted topics. However, not all chapters are good (but most are). I'd say about 20 or so are of filler kind of chapters. Nothing really special in them. But the book is worth for the rest of the matter.
The chapters are also written to provoke further thought into each area. Kind of "first principles" approach - which I like compared to the CISSP guide approach of "here is the information, now devour it for the exam". However this book is not an exam guide (and I knew that before hand). I bought this book for the matter in it and I am very satisfied.
If you are the kind of person who want to quickly assimilate and regurgitate the matter for CISSP, then dont even bother. I am kind of person who loves to read things from the basics slowly, getting the concepts and ideas all clear in my mind and hence I plan to finish this book before reading CISSP exam guide (which by the way is also sitting on my bookshelf).
However I have a major complaint againg the publishers. Having charged One hundred thirty dollars for a 2000 page book, I'd expect the quality of paper is decent. The paper is so thin, I invariably turn two pages when I am thiking it is one page. It is so thin, even turning the page carefully damages the paper. I agree that the content is specialized and most authors hold at least two or more certifications (CISSP, CISA, SSCP etc.), but that does not warrant printing the book on really wafer thin transparent paper. Sure, the publishers need to make money, but not by compromising the quality of the paper SO MUCH.
And you'd expect this kind of book to live on your shelf for a long long time than "Teach yourself crap in 24 hours" books, but the quality of paper will make that unlikely. Hence I am giving 4 stars to a book which otherwise would deserve 6 stars
Volumes vs editions.......2005-04-19
Some of the reviewers are confusing 'volumes' with editions. Each edition of this book contains several volumes. Each volume contains new papers, adding them to the current edition of the ISMH.
The current edition of the Information Security Management Handbook is the 5th. At present, it has only 2 volumes. This CD-ROM only contains the 1st volume of the 5th edition. There is a new CD-ROM of the ISMH with a 2005 date (ISBN 0849339422) which I *think* contains the new volume 2 of the 5th edition (ISBN 0849332109)
What makes this CD-ROM valuable over the 5thED-V1 book is that it contains the contents of the 3rd and the 4th editions! I know the 4th edition contained four volumes.
Excellent reference!.......2003-09-04
Excellent reference!
This is an excellent security reference!
If you are looking for a pure CISSP prep book, this is not the best. But for general info sec, this is an awesome book.

Bible on Project Management.......2003-06-10
If you have never been a project manager, and suddenly you need to learn rules of the game, this is a book I would recommend you to use as a reference material. It is easy to read, has real life examples and various templates related to project management are presented in this book. Highly recommended.
We just finished a 2yr project using this text.......2002-09-15
We (26 person team) just finished a 2+ year project using On Time Within Budget as our process guide. Bottom line: the project came in 7 weeks late -- not bad for a company used to 6 to 12 month schedule overruns. We'll do better next time with more experience on the methods described in the book. Advice to others: the chapters on estimation, standards, and risk analysis are great. The chapters on software teams, quality assurance and testing are good pointers to what we needed to know, but we also used other books on these subjects to fill in more details that we needed. Most everyone liked the epilogue (pulling it all together). This book helped to pull us out of the dark ages into modern software project management. Strongly recommended!
Good reference even for non-software managers.......2002-03-27
I don't usually write reviews but I was prompted to do this one because I strongly disagree with a preceding review. I am an EE senior manager and software development had always been a mystery to me until I got hold of On Time, Within Budget. I particularly found the following chapters helpful: Chapter 1 which includes reasons for project success and failure, Chapter 2 on risk management and how to reduce the cost of risk events, Chapter 5 on the management of software engineers, and most especially the Epilogue on pulling it all together, which provides a great overall perspective.
This book is full of real-life examples; it was clearly written by someone who has been down in the trenches. This adds credibility to the methods described.
I have learned a lot from the book and I use it as a reference regularly.
Probably best for a techie moving into a management rolw.......2002-03-12
As a previous reviewer wrote, I was truly dismayed at the level of technical expertise tha the readers of this text are assumed to have. The book definitely contains several gems, but non-technical managers would be better off finding other sources that are more geared for their skill base.
For example, I enjoyed Chapter 9 which described the major development standards on a relatively high level. However, the exercises at the end of the chapter dealt into the intricacies of the standards, which was not a level of detail achieved within the chapter text.
Also, many of the other exercises within the chapters seem more related to system design than to schedule and budget estimation, which I assumed would be the crux of the book.
So, this book may be best read by technical personnel moving into a management position, but for non-technical personnel I would recommend finding another source of information.
This book was adopted as the standard text by our company.......2001-11-17
I used On Time Within Budget at a post grad course last year on software project management (we switched mid-course from the 2nd edition to the 3rd). After the course I brought it to the attention of our Software Process Office at our company and in July it was adopted as the standard text to be used by all our project managers. In the last 4 months we have introduced risk analysis, standard status reporting, and stepwise estimation. We are planning to start preparing for an SEI assessment early next year. Everyone's guide is the Bennatan book (we are also now using the IEEE standards and the SEI CMM guideline books).
I don't think our company would have taken all this on without this book. It doesn't only suggest what to do it also explains why.
