To Good To Be True.......2005-02-17
The Adkins diet works because decreasing your carb intake decreases your calorie intake and it also works by your body loosing significant fluids secondary to increased urine excretions of ketones (from fat burning) and nitrogen (from use of protein for energy rather than the body's first choice of glucose from carbs).
Problems related to this diet include:
* increased protein diets heavily burden the kidneys to excrete exessive amounts of nitrogen which has been shown to lead to loss of renal (kidney) function with aging.
*Inadequate carb intake compromises glycogen storage in liver and muscles (the body's 1st choice for energy source) risking fatigue and poor performance
*Protein in excess of need is used for energy (but if you are fatigued from lack of carbs you wont use the energy), the other protein is converted to fat, and its a well known health risk to have an increased body fat %
* Also, high protein is associated with increased urinary excretion of calcium, and may therefore contribute to osteoporosis.
* High intake of animal proteins are linked to atherosclerosis (related to saturated fat and cholesterol content) and to colon and prostate cancers.
Honestly this diet is not healthy for you at all. Eating a well balanced diet and regularly getting excercise will help you stay healthy and can remove you from the burden and cost that all of these fad diets offer. No matter how Mr. Adkins died doesn't matter... what matters is that you have a choice to make good decisions about your health and realize that sometimes these fad diets are too good to be true and we could be putting ourselves at risk by believing they are the answer to our problems.
50 lbs Lost, Off Insulin, Feel Great!.......2004-10-28
1. To start with, I am a Cardiac Intensive Care Nurse and "binky"'s comments were absolutely right about Atkin's death.....and the explanation of the fluid gain
2. I have been diabetic over 20 yrs, much of that time on insulin. Some yrs ago, I noticed that if I had a meeting at work that required my attention, I would skip meals. I was sluggish, tired all the time, massive yeast infections, and so many other problems. I told my mother that I thought food was killing me....I felt so much better without food! But it was the sneaky lil carbs making me so sick!
How excited I was to discover Dr. Atkins! So now after 7 yrs on Atkins, I maintain my weight with 20 gms carbs or less a day and I no longer crave carbs. I quit buying big bags of potatoes and loaves of bread! His Revolution and this diet book helped the most. I have adapted some of the recipes in the book to suit my taste.
My doctor will tell me the usual AMA garbage about this diet and then compliments me on all the progress! Hmmmmm. In the hospital, an 1800 ADA diet includes 5 starches a day and small amt of protein! Yuck! Boy, you should have seen the hospital dietician when my doctor let me be on a modified Atkins while hospitalized!
Hope this helps ya'll out there!
The TRUTH about Dr. Atkins death.......2004-06-02
It is astonishing to read the slam pieces here about Dr. Atkins so-called obesity and overweight condition at the time of his death. Here are the facts:
* He previously had a heart condition called cardiomyopathy -- a serious disease of the heart muscle which is unrelated to diet.
* He died of a head injury because of an accident falling on slippery ice and not of being overweight.
* His actual weight was 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital at the time of his accident. The erroneous reports of him weight 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death. The extra weight was not fat, but an accumulation of body fluids linked to organ failure during his coma.
* His previous reported heart attack was due to a viral infection and not diet related. He spoke openly of his condition on various national news programs.
* The report that was released about him being overweight was leaked to the press by a group named "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine", which is an ardent opponent of the Atkins diet. In short, they distorted his weight by reporting the weight at the time of death - 258 lbs, and not at the time of his admittance - 200 lbs...an obvious attempt to discredit and distort the facts surrounding Dr. Atkins death.
* A formal complaint has been filed by the Medical Examiner of New York regarding the suspicious leak of this information to the public by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine."
* The disinformation surrounding Dr.Atkins untimely death is politically driven by the AMA and other detractors of the diet.
Dr. Atkins book, New Diet Revolution has turned the AMA and other nutritional views upside down and has created a furor over the standard edicts of the medical profession. What is not said among the detractors of the Diet is that it is safe and it works. The information contained in this book will not only help you lose weight, it could save your life. The food industry, especially the bread and pasta industry have lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the low carb revolution. Is it any wonder that this diet is under so much fire? Keep an open mind and read the book.
As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system. The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book! Sheesh.
Save your money and go to the Web site.......2004-02-17
I bought this cookbook before looking at the Atkins Web site. Big mistake. You can find these recipes, and in some cases updates of them, for free on the Web site. You can also find lots of low-carb recipes by searching with Google. This book also could have used the assistance of an experienced cookbook editor.
good info...not so great recipes.......2003-10-27
I have been on the atkins diet for four months and have lost 56 pounds (and still going), so I can attest to the fact that this diet does work. I have never felt better or more energetic in my life.
The first part of this book talks about the basics of the diet. That's where the three stars came from. The second part of the book is the recipe section. No stars for it. Most of the recipes call for ingredients that I cannot find in normal grocery stores. It's really quite frustrating. Unless you live in an area with several health food stores, which I do not, I would recommend trying to find a different cook book with more practical recipes or coming up with your own.

The O'Reilly Cookbook series, with its to-the-point but illuminating coverage of programming subjects, meets the challenge of explaining how to write software as well as anything else on the market. When you're facing a coding problem--particularly in a language you're new to or haven't used in a while--and know there must be a proven way to solve it, the right Cookbook can often get you going in a hurry. C# Cookbook applies the formula to the language of Microsoft .NET, and is an addition to the line that more than a few programmers will appreciate.
Don't count on this book to solve big tasks for you. "I need some C# software that integrates with Avaya telephone switches and Siemens databases...:" No. Rather, this book shows you how to do the little jobs (converting an array to a delimited string, monitoring the event log, creating a bounded hashtable, and so on) that can stand in the way of prompt completion of a project. What's more, the coverage isn't limited to code samples. Stephen Teilhet and Jay Hilyard take advantage of the Cookbook series' Problem-Solution-Discussion format to teach you a thing or two about C#. You'll refer to this book often for quick answers and explanations. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to solve small but non-trivial problems in the C# programming language. Each of 17 chapters covers a major area of C# functionality--networking, regular expressions, filesystem, security, and so on--and contains a dozen or two entries on how best to solve programming problems.
Book Description
With C# Cookbook, 2nd Edition, you'll be able to learn and improve your mastery of both the C# language and the .NET platform. This updated bestseller has been completely revised to account for C# 2.0, the latest version of this popular object-oriented programming language. It also includes more than 100 new code solutions (over 300 overall) to common problems and tasks that you're sure to face as a C# programmer.
Nearly every solution, or "recipe," contains a complete, documented code sample showing you how to solve the specific problem, as well as a detailed discussion of how and why the underling technology works. This question-solution-discussion format is a proven teaching method, as any fan of O'Reilly's "Cookbook" series can attest to. In fact, no other source offers a learn-as-you-go format quite like this.
C# Cookbook, 2nd Edition is organized into 20 chapters, each of which focuses on a particular topic in creating C# solutions. Here are just some of what's covered:
- Numeric data types
- Strings and characters
- Classes and structures
- Generics
- Exception handling
- Delegates, events, and anonymous methods
- Filesystem interactions
- Web site access
- XML usage (including XPath and XSLT)
- Networking
- Threading
- Unsafe code
Best of all, you don't have to be an experienced C# or .NET developer to use C# Cookbook, 2nd Edition. You just have to be someone who wants to solve a problem now, without having to learn all the related theory first.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!!!!.......2007-09-05
If you are just coming into C# or have been doing it for a while - it doesn't matter - BUY THIS BOOK!!! Oreilly as we all know, makes very good tech/programming books and this one is one of the best I've had so far. This will be a book that will spend much less time on my shelf and much more time next to me on my desk.
Good book.......2007-08-10
Being an advanced programmer I was looking for books to use as references or to further my skills. This book has proven a valuable asset.
Excellent C# 2.0 Resource.......2007-07-12
The C# Cookbook, Second Edition has been updated and revised for C# 2.0 and version 2.0 of the .NET framework, and despite the fact that version 3.5 of the .NET framework is imminent, it remains a must have book to have on hand. It is essentially a collection of examples showing how to solve specific programming problems (some of which you might not have even realised you have, such as boxing/unboxing and efficient string handling, to name just a few...)
The C# Cookbook has over 1100 pages and is arranged into 20 chapters, each of which focuses on a particular area in C#. Despite its size it is not daunting to read. Here are the topics covered:
1. Numbers and Enumerations
2. Strings and Characters
3. Classes & Structures
4. Generics
5. Collections
6. Iterators and Partial Types
7. Exception Handling
8. Diagnostics
9. Delegates, Events and Anonymous methods
10. Regular Expressions
11. Data Structures and Algorithms
12. Filesystem I/O
13. Reflection
14. Web
15. XML
16. Networking
17. Security
18. Threading and Synchronisation
19. Unsafe Code
20. Toolbox
This book is in O'Reilly's `cookbook' series Problem-Solution-Discussion format, and like other books in the series can either be read from cover to cover, or be used as a reference to shed light on a particular problem. Each `recipe' starts with a description of the problem, followed by a complete, documented code sample showing you how to solve it, along with a detailed discussion of how and why it works, and any drawbacks. This format can also serve as an excellent way of mastering aspects of C#.
Like the other O'Reilly cookbooks, this book manages to strike a perfect balance between reference and instruction on real problems developers encounter every day. Hats off to Jay and Stephen for creating such a useful resource.
If you are a developer who writes C# code for a living, I would be surprised if you do not find something useful the first time you pick this book up. If you are thinking of buying just one book on C# 2.0, make it this one. Highly recommended for beginners and experts alike.

Vital reference for solving problems and learning C#.......2007-04-14
Another book that's great as the occasional reference. This is another huge tome and it's chock full of topics from generics to security to XML.
Each topic is a recipe in a Problem/Solution/Discussion/See Also format. The solution is a snippet or set of snippets to solve the specific problem and the discussion is s walkthrough of the ins and outs of both the problem and how the solution fits the bill. Occasionally there's a good discussion of the pros and cons of solutions.
This isn't a book for reading cover to cover, but there's a lot to be learned browsing through the recipes, and you're sure to get answers on a wide range of topics including solid use of generics, exception handling, I/O, web bits, and networking. The chapters on security and reflection are particularly useful because they offer up good insights on approaching secure coding correctly and good techniques for dealing with reflection.
Highly Useful.......2007-02-19
This is exactly the sort of book one needs when beginning a new programming language, and still useful later. It is a large comprehensive set of examples.
Book Description
Most of us simply arent willing to sacrifice culinary excellence for meals that are good for us. Its no wonder, then, that Cooking Light is Americas leading epicurean magazine and the most trusted authority on healthy cooking. And this newest hardcover beauty is the most comprehensive collection of 1,000 top-rated, double-tested, healthy, yet rich and tasty recipes ever combined in one cookbook.
Customer Reviews:
Buy the book, skip the magazine.......2007-05-09
This is a wonderful reference for your kitchen. It is filled, and I mean filled, with recipes and ways to cut out some fat here, reduce calories there while maintaining great taste. I was so happy with the book, I subscribed to the monthly magazine. BIG MISTAKE! Instead of being filled with many recipes, it is filled with ads and "lifestyle" features that have nothing to do with cooking, much less light cooking. Buy the book.
The Ultimate Cooking Light Cookbook.......2007-01-10
This is my favorite cookbook by far. The Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe produces cookies that look and taste just like the full-fat variety.
Not As Good As It Looks - But OK.......2007-01-06
I have had this cookbook for a while. I pulled it from the shelf to do this review and noticed as I skimmed through that many recipes I have tried and made notations on looked similar to this "Eh...", "I would rather eat cardboard", "Sorta bitter and uninspiring". Very few "Yums".
That said, the fine points of the book are: The pictures are lovely and mouthwatering. The calorie/fat/protein/carbs (etc) are listed for each recipe (just like the mag). There are some fun and interesting tips sprinkles throughout the book like "ways to shape rolls" and "Troubleshooting creme caramel". If you are a novice cook there are plenty of cooking, chopping, folding type-instructions. They also do "Classic Makeovers" of recipes that are usually calorie and fat bombs to a more trimmed down version showing each version's recipe side by side. That can be a good way to see plainly where a cook can trim fat, replace fat with less caloric subs, etc.
Now for the less than great news: Some of the recipes are just plain old normal recipes. Meaning not light. Almost every bread recipe can be found in a regular cookbook. No change. Why bother including it in a light cooking book? Some of the recipes do not seem particularly light. I found myself saying over and over: "109 calories for this rank cookie? 314 calories for 1/16th of a very mediocre cheesecake?" One more thing is that meat browning is done (like with the 500 calorie lamb shanks) with NO FAT, completely relying on non stick. No spray, no 1/2 ts oil... NO! That is no way to cut fat. Why bother eating that fatty cut? It makes me laugh. Finally, a few recipes were unclear. For instance, there is a barbecued pork chop recipe that mysteriously loses half the sauce. Unacceptable.
So, if you are a novice cook, need inspiration and haven't a clue how to cut the calories and fat from your meals this may be the place to start. Maybe... If you are none of those things, save your money or spend it on a cookbook that is filled with recipes that look good AND taste great. The internet is chock full of hints on how to sub fruit for fat (like applesauce for oil) and any nit whit can bungle a dish by browning without fat in the pan.
Great Recipes.......2007-01-03
Cooking Light is my best resource for acceptable healthy recipes. I would have preferred more of the classic recipes, but maybe I need to get the earlier edition.
What I liked best about the cookbook is the many cooking tips. There are a couple of gourmet recipes that I am anxious to attempt, specifically Baklava. There is a wide variety of types of dishes.
I have tried several other cookbooks, but I always come back to the tried and true, Cooking Light, Heart Association and Weight Watchers.
Absolutely delicious!.......2006-11-25
This is an excellent cookbook with surprisingly delicious recipes. I have been using it daily for the past two weeks. My husband and I have enjoyed all of our meals. I can't believe that these recipes are actually healthy and so easy to make. There are quite a few 'all-time favorite' recipes included that are very tasty. I strongly recommendly this cookbook. There's a lot of variety...something for everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Great Quick How-To.......2006-01-23
If you need to know how to do one of the items contained in this book it is an excellent source. Some of the examples were overly simple, but others were very insightful.
lack of code examples and too little information.......2005-07-18
Context: I've been developing software for 12 years (C++, Java, JavaScript, PERL and more). I've been using .Net (VB) for 2 years and C# for about 1 year.
Another guy I know from work bought this book. He seemed to like it because of the short descriptions for each of the recipes.
That is exactly why I don't like the book.
Okay, short descriptions would be okay, except many of them don't even provide example code or completely explain the solution.
I'm looking at recipe "1.14. Manage the Global Assembly Cache" right now and there is nothing about the winnt\assembly directory in there. Why not? Instead the author only explains gacutil /i and /u. Okay, but what does that do? How is it significant? Why do I want or not want my assembly in the gac?
Recipe "1.8. Create and Manage Strong-Named Key Pairs" is the same thing. He tells me how to use the sn.exe tool, but he does not tell me anything more about why or how. Very weak.
But the ones that really kill me are the ones where the author has a chance to really describe the thing using a code example, but then fails to do so.
For example, "Recipe 1.4. Create and Use a Code Library" begs to have some sample code, but none is provided.
"1.3 Create and use a code module" was the same thing.
The section titles promise so much, the text delivers so little.
excellent format and content.......2004-07-27
this book follows a "problem/solution/code" format that really helps to cut down the amount of fluff you always get in other books. it covers a wide range of subjects (including "beginner" topics) but in a very efficient way. even though all these topics could be dug up thru web searches, the quality of info here is far more consistent and reliable. i hope to see more books take this approach.
Excellent quick format.......2004-06-15
This book remains at my fingertips at all times. It's perfect as a reference for those little problems which we, as programmers, face every day.
Some examples of problems which the book covers are:
- Prevent People from Decompiling Your Code
- Sort an Array or an ArrayList
- Store a Serializable Object to a File
- Instantiate an Object Using Reflection
- Synchronize the Execution of Multiple Threads
- Use XML Serialization with Custom Objects
- Apply Windows XP Control Styles
- Reuse Data with the ASP.NET Cache
- Show a Dynamic Print Preview
- Calculate the Size of a Directory
- Download a File over HTTP
- Communicate Using TCP
- Host a Remote Object in IIS
- Restrict Which Users Can Execute Your Code
- Create a Cryptographically Random Number
- Use an ActiveX Control in a .NET Client
- Create a Windows Service
This is only about 5% of what the book offers. If you've ever wondered how to do any of the above or have ever needed to reference a short snippet of code for any of the above then this book is for you. The code snippets are all full complete programs so there's no confusion as to what references were used.
Great for what it is supposed to be!.......2004-04-08
I too feel compelled to disagree with the 'Bad Review' that dismissed this book as being for beginners and just a repeat of the MSDN material.
I've been using .NET C# for years and I am not not a beginner to OO and have been a professional programmer for more than 20 years. I've spent many hours in the MSDN help files and searching the internet for esoteric answers. This book contains many succinct solutions to everyday problems. It's not supposed to be a `big picture' book or only focus on the esoteric. Sure, some of the recipes do qualify for trivial.
Before I bought it I was able to scan the table of contents and see solutions to tricky problems that I had solved and many others that I had interest in or could reasonably see needing. By scanning the solutions I was familiar with, such as cryptography, threading, and networking, it was clear the authors had a clear understanding of the problems and were able to boil it down to real solutions for real problems. While MSDN does contain many good examples, many times it misses the mark when it comes down to relevancy for solving a real problem.
If you are like me, and want solutions at your finger tips, and are willing to pay a little to save a lot of time, this book is a great tool to have available.

Some good information.......2007-09-24
A good book for refrence material for the HAZMAT courses I teach. If you are buying this with the intent to use the information be really careful because some of the information is flat out wrong and will get you hurt and it will also get you put on a few watch lists.
Try again.......2006-09-28
I don't have any real hope that Mr. Powell will see this, but just in case, I have something to say to him. Sir: I remember your work--I bootlegged it when I worked at Kinko's in the early 80s. By then you probably already regretted your efforts.
However, the 80s were a bloated fun-seeking time, the only angst to hold on to was an overload of boredom. My main goal in trying out your recipes was to see if banana skins really did produce a satisfactory high (no.) The most subversive thing I did at that time was to sit very patiently and light my cigarettes on the heat-roll of the copier when I was out of matches.
I remember that the thought processes of my youthful, developing brain were alien and laughable to my more mature self today. But if I could retrieve the fearlessness, moral outrage, and impulsive bursts of energy, and apply them to the more reasoned ethics I enjoy today...
You once sensed without equivocation, that you had a purpose and you had the drive to see it through to completion. Now you seem like a voluntary inmate into one of Dante's levels of hell; you have tethered yourself to your early work, and will remain an apologist throughout eternity. Is that all there is? Or are you the same William Powell who is scouting the best possible golf course or cricket ground, or translating someone else's work?
When are you going to do something to measure up and outshine the fruits of your misguided youth?
The cure for your heartache is to overcome. Focus your grief and regret into a new, more powerful and striking act of courage. Get back to work, and use your long-forgotten talents and fortitude to create a work of magical genius that will override and transcend the earlier message you sent into the world. Mingle the lofty intentions you had as a youth with the compassion, vision and wisdom you own now as a father and teacher. Give us a kinder, gentler recipe for world peace.
As a teenager, your moral outrage kept you holed up in the library for hours creating the Cookbook. How can you feel no nostalgia? When was the last time you held an uncompromised belief? You have not been lobotomized; your manner and approach are milder now, you have found religion, but surely your basic values remain.
Or do you mean to say you are now FOR war for the sake of capitalism, or FOR the national guard being deployed to unleash tear-gas and bully-sticks on a peaceful civilian demonstration? Are you now GLAD that the Ku Klux Klan could lynch 'nigger-lovers' with impunity?
Forgive your young self and realize that these were the realities you lived with during the time you wrote the book. Your ideas were brash and inappropriate, but what were the sensible, middle-aged, law-abiding citizens doing? They were watching on TV while the young and the desperate fought their battles.
While you were writing the Cookbook, I was a first-hand witness to America's complacency, watching TV propped against my mom-and-dad's knees. They sat motionless, stunned and dismayed at what they beheld onscreen. They felt helpless, they did nothing, but they explained to me that the college students, the 'negroes,' and the anti-war demonstrators had the moral high-ground, and they were appalled at the violence and bigotry.
So are you trying to say that you are embarrassed and you wish you had joined your parents and grandparents on the couch, tsk-tsk-ing? What SHOULD you have done? What should we be doing now, as our volunteer servicemen and women are dying for a fraudulent cause in Iraq? As my 50-yr-old friend in the reserves is called up for active duty, alongside poverty-stricken 18 yr-olds forced to choose between jail-time or service?
What are the consequences of our complacency, now that we are the silent observers, full of inward regret, the only measure of our discontent being the sighs we emit or the way we avert our eyes?
I have moments of lucidity, where I consciously think about my cowardice and lack of action, but I bet as the regret-laden author of the Anarchist's Cookbook, your thoughts are far more developed and comprehensive.
So please, bundle up all this angst and remorse, forgive yourself and lead us again. Help us to take responsibility for our world, help us to support and not desert our youth and our soldiers the way middle America did in the 60s.
A new book by "the author of the Anarchist's Cookbook" would grab the attention of millions, by virtue of that credit alone. Your book could be a work of genius, but if it is only reasoned and well-written, that would accomplish enough. Off you go on the talk-show circuit, even if the book is crap.
Help us to make our children proud and want to live by our example, so they aren't as frustrated and desperate as you felt when you wrote your 'first' book. Get off the blogs and get back into the game.
Awesome Book.......2006-07-28
The material covered is fascinating if you enjoy the idea of making "cool" things from household products. The material is dated but an awesome book nonetheless.
Seriously..........2006-07-25
This book is accurate as a blind folded archer spun 3 times in a game of pinata. There is no real useful info in this book, you'd get more tactics out of a Steven Seagal film. This book should be taken out of print before some dummy hurts themselves. If you're interested in learning the tricks of the trade buy a surplus field manual (FM), Watch Discovery Channel, or Join the Military or some Government agency. Billy Powell was a very misinformed hippie. The part that gave it all away was the part about the M-1 Garand. "Used in both World Wars and Korea" WW2 and Korea yes, WW1 no. I think its luck of some higher power that this dummy didn't hurt himself in the process.
Lighten up, folks!.......2006-07-21
The author has provided the context in which he wrote this book. As an adolescent boy in the 1970s, I found it an interesting read. Since I had the good sense to not attempt any of the hare-brained schemes in the book, I am still healthy and have all of my limbs. If people are interested in improvised munitions and the like, there are at least six (6) US Army FMs and TMs on the subject that I am aware of. Bear in mind that the making of explosive devices is a serious felony, and should not be attempted without the proper Federal and State licenses and permits. BATFE does not take kindly to the making of unregistered and untaxed explosives.
Book Description
Despite its highly adaptable and flexible nature, C++ is also one of the more complex programming languages to learn. Once mastered, however, it can help you organize and process information with amazing efficiency and quickness.
The C++ Cookbook will make your path to mastery much shorter. This practical, problem-solving guide is ideal if you're an engineer, programmer, or researcher writing an application for one of the legions of platforms on which C++ runs. The algorithms provided in C++ Cookbook will jump-start your development by giving you some basic building blocks that you don't have to develop on your own.
Less a tutorial than a problem-solver, the book addresses many of the most common problems you're likely encounter--whether you've been programming in C++ for years or you're relatively new to the language. Here are just some of the time-consuming tasks this book contains practical solutions for:
- Reading the contents of a directory
- Creating a singleton class
- Date and time parsing/arithmetic
- String and text manipulation
- Working with files
- Parsing XML
- Using the standard containers
Typical of O'Reilly's "Cookbook" series, C++ Cookbook is written in a straightforward format, featuring recipes that contain problem statements and code solutions, and apply not to hypothetical situations, but those that you're likely to encounter. A detailed explanation then follows each recipe in order to show you how and why the solution works. This question-solution-discussion format is a proven teaching method, as any fan of the "Cookbook" series can attest to. This book will move quickly to the top of your list of essential C++ references.

COOKING WITH C++!!.......2006-10-12
Are you a C++ programmer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors D. Ryan Stephens, Christopher Diggins, Jonathan Turkanis and Jeff Cogswell, have done an outstanding job of writing a book about solving common problems with C++, but not a book about learning C++.
Stephens, Diggins, Turkanis and Cogswell, begin by showing you recipes that contain recipes for transforming C++ source code into executable programs and libraries. Then, the authors show you recipes that describe techniques that you apply from within header files. Next, they show you solutions to common problems when working with C++'s numeric types. The authors also show you recipes for working with strings and text files. They continue with an overview of how to manipulate dates and times. Then, the authors describe the data structures in the standard library that you can use to store data. Next, they describe how to work with the standard algorithms and how to use them on the standard containers. The authors also show you solutions to common problems related to working with C++ classes. They continue by showing you recipes for using C++'s exception-handling features. Then, the authors present an overview of streams and files. Next, they provide you with solutions to common numerical programming problems and demonstrate how to use generic programming techniques to write numerical code effectively. The authors also describe how to write multithreaded programs in C++ using the Boost Threads library. They continue by describing solutions to some common requirements when internationalizing C++ programs. Then, the authors present an overview of XML. Finally, they describe a few facets of C++ that do not actually fit neatly into any of the other chapters: Function and member pointers, const variables and member functions, and standalone operators and a few other topics.
Throughout this most excellent book, the authors give real life solutions that reflect the current best practices in C++ programming. More importantly, they focus on performance and portability, with a strong emphasis on formal and ad hoc standards.
Good Book For New C++ Programmers.......2006-09-08
The 'C++ Cookbook' is a great resource for any developer that might be new to or still mastering the C++ programming language. Packed with over 500 pages and broken up into 15 chapters, this book is well written and easy to follow. My main "gripe" with this book is that when I think of a cookbook, many times it's full of solutions are less well known, or slightly more challenging tasks that the average programmer might not know the solution to. With this cookbook, I feel it's geared more towards the more junior level developer who isn't a master of the language and is still learning their trade. I don't feel that this book is perfect for senior programmers, but it DOES offer common solutions in one book, so I might be incorrect in this assumption. All in all, a solid book, and one well worth keeping on your desk and you code with C++!!
**** RECOMMENDED
Nice programs, if only they'd compile!.......2006-03-18
This book contains a lot of clever code fragments. Unfortunately I've found numerous bugs in them and some code fails to compile all together. Take for example the author's matrix class, it uses nested templates (partial specialization) which does not work on most compilers, including the latest VC++. At the very least then, the cookbook should have provided alternate means of achieving the task given that Visual C++ is listed as a supported compiler. In other areas I have found bugs and poor initializations. Granted, the programs show the way that tasks could be done. But this is not an algorithms book (and spends very little time discussing the algorithms). It is clear that the authors did not even bother compiling the code snippets on every "supported" compiler, so how can I believe they have tested them? If I want to debug code, I'd rather spend the time debugging my own than someone else's.
The bottom line is that a code from a "cookbook" is supposed to work out of the box and have good instructions on how to extend and modify the code. This books' do not. As such this book is of little value.
A very good book of C++ recipes!.......2005-12-17
Unlike a self-proclaimed "C++ Wizard," I'm of the opinion that this book is inherently useful in many ways, even for experienced programmers. Basically, it offers several ways to tackle various programming challenges with C++-centric solutions.
Whining about brace style is a hopelessly lost cause. K&R style braces save lines and reduces page count in the publishing industry. Get used to it or get out of it, I say.
However, this isn't a rant.
There is a good portion of the book that would be more helpful to aspiring programmers and less useful to advanced programmers, such as "Making Sure a Header File Gets Include Only Once. In my programming career, I've seen a lot of bad code. If more develooping programmers would have read this book, my life would surely have been easier!
Like any cookbook, a recipe is a guideline for producing a desired result. It is up to the chef to decide when to depart from the guideline and by how much. It is oftentimes difficult to find the core solution in a set of API documentation, for example, in string handling. The C++ Cookbook has a whole chapter on string manipulation and text processing. It is much easier to look at the often short and sweet recipes in the book and decide whether or not they are close enough to what you want to do to use them as a baseline for writing your own code, rather than just referring to an API document and trying to figure out which set of operations you want to use to accomplish the task at hand.
I don't think that this book is some kind of answer to all of our C++-related prayers; what cookbook have you used that can be so much to so many? In all, it is a worthwhile product for those seeking assistance with their everyday coding. It does tend to promote Boost. Boost is a large project of common C++ "needs" wrapped up in a fairly platform agnostic package and available as a free download. It is a lot like a "Swiss Army Knife" API for C++ in a way similar to what the JDK is to Java developers.
C++ Cookbook will be very helpful to programmers who don't want to spend time solving every little problem themselves. It may not be the best text for a veteran with ingrained Computer Sciences education, but for self-taught, non-CS disciplinarians, it may well be the ticket to writing much better code in less time. For someone making a transition from C to C++, it is an indepensible "how to" reference that you can easily read when the mood strikes. If you think FILE* before fstream, chances are this book will be a big help!
A few aspects of the book are specific to a particular platform, though for the most part, it is platform independent.
Not every C++ book needs to be written for the hardcore daily-life programmer. Hobbyists and others who find that they need to use C++ are certain to find it full of useful nuggets. There are often dozens of ways to set about solving a particular programming challenge. This book offers its solutions in a very readable, enjoyable manner that is also interesting and practical. If you're a C++ Wizard, you probably don't need this book, but in my experience, more than half the guys who think they're C++ Wizards tend to be wanna bes.
There is a lot of good information inside of this book that should be known by most experienced C++ programmers. There are also a lot of good information that is easily forgotten by programmers who don't work in a particular area of the language very often. The Cookbook provides an easy way to look up the recipe and implement a viable solution without having to sort through barely comprehensible API documentation, which is often a lot like trying to bake a chocolate cake with the first steps being milk the cow and fetch the eggs, or more likely sometimes, plant the grass so that you can raise cows to eventually milk! This book is more like a box of cake mix. Maybe not perfect in the eyes of a master chef, but good enough for the rest of us to use and enjoy.
Good code, nice explanations.......2005-12-12
This cookbook is a little shorter than those with the other languages, but while that may seem odd, it might not after you find that it doesn't cover operating system specific patterns. The recipes center around the basics, file I/O, strings, containers. Only at the end does it get into higher level topics like multithreading and XML.
These may sound like gripes. They aren't. This is a good book. The writing is good. The code is solid. You will find these recipes handy.
That being said, I would have liked more material on regular expressions and memory management with Boost.

Book not received.......2007-01-18
It is very difficult for me to review this item since I am still waiting for it. I have heard nothing from you people about the hold up and would appreciate an update on estimated delivery time for this book.

No greasy burgers???.......2007-01-17
Dr. Phil - like him or hate him - has some very good information here. Weight loss and diet control still boils down to the basics: Eat less and move more...but you have to start with eating healthy and getting your habits and mindset ready to get yourself more healthy.
This cookbook is nothing but healthy food - you know, the stuff none of us want to eat until our doctor says you may die if you don't! Anyway, as far as diet foods go, this is a very good cookbook with some not-so-bad tasting meals in it. Along with Dr. Phil's books, this is a plan that can work for you---if you want it to and stick to it!
You may not like Dr. Phil, but his advice, foundation, and information is right on the mark.
Great Compliment to The Ulimate Weight Solution.......2006-01-29
If you have not bought the Ultimate Weight Solution . . . you may want to consider reading it and then purchase the cookbook. The Ultimate Weigt Solution helps you get you into the mindset needed to live a healthier lifestyle. The cookbook gives new recipes that keep the array of food choices plentiful. Each week we pull out two new recipes which keeps the mealtime full of a few surprises rather than the same old diet food.
Don't knock it till you've tried it!.......2006-01-20
I have noticed many people have said stuff like, "I wouldn't even want to try the recipies", and that they are "unconventional". Well, lets face it - the reason you (and I) are fat is that we don't eat healthy foods. If we liked eating all of the vegtables and spices (instead of salt) in this book, then we really wouldn't need it would we?
So I say, if you are serious about eating healthier, give it a try. I have found some of the dishes that sounded the least appealing actually tasted great. The only reason I gave the book a four instead of a five is that I have had to tone down the seasonings and experiment with flavors I am more used to, but other than that most of the recipies are great. I have been using it 3 weeks now and have lost 12lbs.
So, don't knock it till you've tried it.
Dr. Phil is back and this time it's a COOKBOOK!.......2005-06-14
Dr. Phil is back and this time it's a cookbook! Advice like his is hard to find except for on television, DVDs and in his books that Oprah has recommended. Eating is good, true, but with Dr. Phil on your back your diet is healthier than ever. Plain-spoken truth was never as clear as this. Fat makes you fat, and denial makes you deny things. Denying that this cookbook is the BEST would be false advertising. I am in favor of weight loss freedom like Dr. Phil emotes on television, and now in a COOKBOOK it's like having the good Dr. ("doctor") in your kitchen helping you and tasting your goodies! With added health you will perservere! Try the recipe for Pork Kabobs in Walnut Lamb Sauce on page 67.
Book Description
Hepatitis C is a potentially fatal virus that attacks the liver. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Hepatitis C has already infected an estimated four to five million Americans, and worldwide it may have infected as many as 200 million. Most experts agree that if the rate of Hepatitis C infection isn't curbed soon, it will eventually kill more people each year than AIDS.
However, Hepatitis C is not always fatal, and it can be fought successfully. For many who suffer from the virus, eating properly can delay the end stages leading to cirrhosis of the liver. It also can diminish the uncomfortable symptoms of the disease.
The Hepatitis C Cookbook has been prepared with the special dietary needs of people suffering from Hepatitis C in mind. Hepatitis C does not have to make eating a miserable experience. By using medical guidelines, the Hepatitis C Cookbook provides a road map to healthy, tasty foods to eat and enjoy. Following these dietary changes can also make a significant difference in one's attitude as well as the variety, severity, and frequency of symptoms. All of these considerations can enhance the quality of life for anyone suffering from the disease.
All of the recipes are based on the dietary guidelines provided by the medical profession for Hepatitis C. They also have been tested by Hepatitis C patients.

Hepatitis C Cookbook.......2007-07-30
It will help me some what. My boyfriend has galstones and pancreatitis along with cirrosis of the liver so I was hoping for more recipes without onions or mushrooms.
great recipes.......2007-03-26
Gave me something to go by for my cooking since I recently found out I have Hep C. She uses dairy products and that is not good for those with liver disease. So I just substitute the dairy with soy.
Hepatitis C Cookbook.......2006-03-30
This author puts extreme stress on food being of organic origins, and reducing intake of red meats. Unfortunately she loads recipes with whole milk, cream and butter. The butterfat in these products are is unhealthful as eating meat fat. They should be limited in all diets, but especially in foods prepared for people with liver damage.
Hepatitis C cookbook.......2004-11-03
Wonderfully put together. Easy to read and understand. This person knows from experience what she is talking about. Really helped me as a Hep C sufferer! I would reccommend this book to anyone who has Hep C or has a friend or family member who does. I have never seen anything like it! THANK YOU.

January 2005 - Better resources now available !.......2005-01-14
This book is light reading and lacks knowledge sharing of glycemic foods. I was not looking for a Dr.'s book on food and recipes but this book was not fullfilling for me. It encourages the use of the 'bad' fats. It does encourage low glycemic foods and low sugar foods. What I am trying to share is that I bought two books at the same time, the other by "GALLOP" - Living the G.I. Diet, and found this one to be greatly lacking by comparison.
Just one person's opinion - All the best
Terrific asset to your cookbook collection!.......2003-04-16
My husband started on SugarBusters almost a year ago, after my boss lost 50 lbs on it. We bought the SugarBusters book and also the cookbook. Never used any of the recipes in either. Instead, I was cooking only a meat and several veggies for each meal, and we were getting a little burned out. THEN, we found this in a bookstore! Everything we've tried has been terrific, not to mention easy. Hubby has lost 55lbs, thanks to SugarBusters and regular exercise. We're eating better tasting food than we ever have, and it is healthy, to boot! The shopping guide is extremely helpful and more comprehensive than the one put out by SugarBusters. I have since given at least 5 copies of this as gifts, along with Sugar Bust for Life Part II.

Brennan's restaurant has won numerous awards, for its fine wine cellars. The wines selected are the best choices that are acceptable within the Sugar Busters guidelines.
The book Sugar Bust for Life! was formerly called Sugar Less for Life! Unfortunately (...)is selling these two books together as a set when they are the same book! The Brennan's do have a another book out called Sugar Bust for Life with the Brennan's Part II. It's also available through (...). I just received a copy, and like its sister book, it looks wonderful!
Sugar Bust for Life! With the Brennan's is certainly a delicious easy way to lose weight and get healthy!
Excellent!.......2001-02-05
This is an excellent cookbook. I started the Sugar Buster's diet two months ago and lost 18 lbs. The recipes are delicious! I am so excited I dedicated a website to Sugar Busters and included this cookbook.
