This is the standard text for introductory advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate level courses in signal processing. The text gives a coherent and exhaustive treatment of discrete-time linear systems, sampling, filtering and filter design, reconstruction, the discrete-time Fourier and z-transforms, Fourier analysis of signals, the fast Fourier transform, and spectral estimation. The author develops the basic theory independently for each of the transform domains and provides illustrative examples throughout to aid the reader. Discussions of applications in the areas of speech processing, consumer electronics, acoustics, radar, geophysical signal processing, and remote sensing help to place the theory in context. The text assumes a background in advanced calculus, including an introduction to complex variables and a basic familiarity with signals and linear systems theory. If you have this background, the book forms an up-to-date and self-contained introduction to discrete-time signal processing that is appropriate for students and researchers. Discrete-Time Signal Processing also includes an extensive bibliography.

1 out of 5 stars Academic Propaganda.......2007-05-14

Look, problems involving digital signals and systems can get very complicated, but the basics are just that--basic. This famous book on DSP is a quintessential example of academic propaganda: it misinforms the general public into thinking the subject matter is far harder than it is, while it privately informs insiders with very precise information.

5 out of 5 stars Destined for a standard?.......2006-05-14

It is my pleasure to comment on this book which I recently purchased. I have two of Dr. Oppenheim's previous books. This book is a core integration of a topic with too many diverse starting points (mine was digital filters derived from Prony's method, not in the book by name). Dr. Bose was my first EE Professor. Alan Oppenheim was my second EE instructor. Alan (just finished MSEE at the time) had not published a book yet, but his focus was always on your questions. His product was your understanding. If this book is for your shelf, it will not harm it. If this topic is for your mind, this book was meticulously written for you. Lance Webb, PhDEE

5 out of 5 stars Six star book on Digital Signal Processing.......2006-03-01

This is the outstanding 2nd edition of Oppenheim's classic DSP book, which for over two decades was the only real choice for a textbook on the subject. That was too bad, since the first edition was probably the worst thing I have ever seen in print - terse, incomprehensible, and with only a few awful and poorly illustrated examples. When I decided to take a refresher course in DSP, I was horrified to see our class would be using the second edition of that horrendous text. What I found instead was a completely rehabilitated textbook! This is not a beginner's DSP textbook by any stretch of the imagination, but absolutely everything is explained and there are plenty of well worked out examples. The end-of-chapter problems are broken down into simple, intermediate, and advanced problems with quite a few mind-puzzlers in the advanced section. Plus, the answers to the first 20 problems in every chapter are in the back of the book.
There is really nothing unique about the book's format. What does makes the book unique is the density and amount of material included. Just about every page is packed with well-explained important information. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has had a prior semester of an upper-level undergraduate class in Signals and Systems and wants to study DSP. An accompanying book that you might find helpful is "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" by Lyons. That book is good for getting an intuitive feel for DSP. Another book that will help you with some of the earlier concepts in this book (linear systems, DTFT, Z-transform, DFT, basic filter design) and some of the direct computations involved is "Schaum's Outline of Digital Signal Processing". Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:

5 out of 5 stars Good book from initial reading.......2005-09-26

I haven't gone through this book all the way yet since classes haven't started; however, it seems to be a very well written book that is easy to get the necessary concepts out of easily. Once the class is done I will try to add a further review.

4 out of 5 stars yes, it is!.......2004-12-26

This is the book that focuses on the concept more than any thing else which ,in turn, build up your insight through the material.

This book addresses discrete time signal processing issues in an ordinary fashion and doesn't cover more advanced topics like wavelets or statistical signal processing.

Maybe you would be interested in this book if you are that senior/first year graduate student looking forward a nice job with a high salary or a DSP engineer that is interested in keeping his job :)

Overall, nothing can get better than Oppenheim DSP 1975 but however, this is a nice volume if you don't have the preceding one.
It is almost the same quality isn't it?

Book Description

Essential principles, practical examples, current applications, and leading-edge research.

In this book, Thomas F. Quatieri presents the field's most intensive, up-to-date tutorial and reference on discrete-time speech signal processing. Building on his MIT graduate course, he introduces key principles, essential applications, and state-of-the-art research, and he identifies limitations that point the way to new research opportunities.

Quatieri provides an excellent balance of theory and application, beginning with a complete framework for understanding discrete-time speech signal processing. Along the way, he presents important advances never before covered in a speech signal processing text book, including sinusoidal speech processing, advanced time-frequency analysis, and nonlinear aeroacoustic speech production modeling. Coverage includes:

Speech production and speech perception: a dual view

Crucial distinctions between stochastic and deterministic problems

Pole-zero speech models

Homomorphic signal processing

Short-time Fourier transform analysis/synthesis

Filter-bank and wavelet analysis/synthesis

Nonlinear measurement and modeling techniques

The book's in-depth applications coverage includes speech coding, enhancement, and modification; speaker recognition; noise reduction; signal restoration; dynamic range compression, and more. Principles of Discrete-Time Speech Processing also contains an exceptionally complete series of examples and Matlab exercises, all carefully integrated into the book's coverage of theory and applications.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Brode scope but not self consistent.......2005-09-21

The book took very nice and broad scope of Signal Processing.
Unfortunately not all subjects are disclosed self-consistent.
The best benefit I get from chapters where the subject was already familiar from other sources.
I could not recomend this book for initial aquintment with Signal Processing, although with some previous knowledge the book could be interesting.

5 out of 5 stars well-written and extensive coverage of speech processing.......2003-06-15

I had the pleasure of being a student of the author's at MIT when the course notes that later became this text were under development. Having learnt about speech processing from the author and these notes, I can knowlingly comment on the clarity and depth of the material in the text and can recommend it with confidence. The book takes the reader from a fundamental review of concepts in signal processing and probability/stochastic processes through the broad range of areas in speech processing. That the author is a leading researcher in this area is reflected in the coverage of recent research advances and a bibliography that can point the conscientious reader towards current publications if desired. I strongly recommend this text to anyone interested in learning about signal processing in the context of speech.

Not one of Schaums good books. Skips too many steps in solving problems. Other EE students and also complained about this one. Usually Schaums a safe bet, just not this time.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book EVER!!!!! (No Kidding).......2007-08-27

I don't even know how to start to express how much i love this book...i almost have tears in my eyes as im writing this LOL This book saved the rest of my studies in Electrical engineering. The book by OPPENHEIM is a WASTE of money AND time!!! It's a huge book that confuses students for nothing! But this one instead is more detailed and waaaaay smaller than OPPENHEIM's book. So that you actually learn waaaaay faster! It doesn't contain no stupid stories that we don't give a **** about LOL It goes straight to the point.
For me it's been the best book EVEEEEEEER!!!!! PERIOD!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Study Tool.......2007-05-07

I purchased this book for a first course in Communications; Math of Linear Systems in the Electrical Engineering Department. This was the first outline book that I ever purchased. It was a great study tool. It is clearly organized and easily navigated. The language is plain and simple. The examples are effective in detailing the covered concepts, and will greatly improve your understanding of the material.

This book was used to clarify the concepts taught in the course - and accomplished that task well. It would be a poor idea to expect this book to teach Signals and Systems to someone unfamiliar with the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Organized, Clear and Complete with Appropriate Rigor.......2007-02-27

Positive:
The topics are well organized and covered with an attention to detail. In fact, some of the details regarding convergence of transforms are nicely and concisely presented in this text, while other more expensive texts gloss over certain subtle aspects (bilateral Laplace transforms). As a result of the quality of this book, I've used the text as the sole text for an undergraduate introduction to Signals & Systems. Like all Schaum's outlines, the book provides great detail in the steps necessary to arrive at final solutions. It's a bargain when used as a reference manual or tutorial.

Negative:
Unlike a typical course text, there is very little explanatory prose in each chapter. Without an understanding of the motivation or reason for using certain "tools" in an electrical engineer's toolset, a student can easily feel as though most of the presentations are mathematical exercises without connection to real signals or systems. I've found that in my use of this text, it is imperative that those connections are carefully made, and constantly re-enforced, while working the exercises. A user of this text benefits from seeing demonstrations, working on real-world problems and making the mental connections between the mathematical operations contain within.

5 out of 5 stars A Work of Pure Imagination.......2006-11-03

If you are trying to understand the premise and scope of signals and systems theory, look no farther. Hsu hit a home run in the materials--especially selection of problems--and their arrangement. To get the most out of this text, you will need to understand your calculus and your calculus-based physics backwards and forwards. Otherwise, some of this material may strike you as somewhat pointless.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2005-06-11

It is a classic and a necessary book for researchers in the speech processing area. Undergraduate students might find some sections of the book too theoretical. In which case, it is highly recommended as a reference book. It ranks among the best signal processing books ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Great Conceptual Reference.......2004-07-20

This book covers many aspects of speech signal processing. In doing so, it is a great conceptual primer, but people with specific interests in one aspect or other of speech signal processing may look into other books. I have found it very valuable in clarifying certain concepts and an essential reference for my thesis. Some readers may find this book frustrating in some aspects because they are not familiar with the background of certain topics. It is often best to reread the conceptual portion of those chapters and look for other resources that explain the details of those topics in a more tangible language.

3 out of 5 stars A good reference, but too theoretical.......2003-05-06

This book is very thorough, but at times it seems like the authors go out of their way to keep their discussion on a very theoretical level.

Chapter 1: A highly theoretical review of DSP. You need good knowledge of DSP to understand it.

Chapter 2: Goes over the human speech production and recognition systems. Here you get some practical info on the spectral and time-domain properties that distinguish speech sounds.

Chapter 3: Describes a model of the speech production based on a series of pulses passed through filters that correspond to features of the human speech production system. Practical issues such as which zero and pole values work best are left as an exercise to the reader.

Chapter 4: A lot of mathematics relating long-term statistical properties to those of a short frame of speech data. Contains good info on how to find recursive formulas for statistical properties of speech frames. It is a great shame that the authors don't include examples in MATLAB or pseudo code.

Chapter 5: Linear Prediction. Discusses a mathematical algorithm for creating a prediction filter that could be used to predict the next value in a series of data. In speech processing we are interested in using the coefficients of this prediction filter to encapsulate the properties of a speech frame. Examples of 1st,, 2nd, and 3rd order filters would have gone along way to illustrate how to implement this. There are some good formulas to measure the degree of similarities between speech frames based on their LP filter coefficients.

Chapter 6: Introduces the concept of the cepstrum. Cepstral analysis allows you to de-convolve speech data to separate the excitation source from the vocal tract filter. That way you can lifter out (a play on filter out) the excitation (responsible for pitch) and focus only on the vowel sounds. As always, how to make it work is left as an exercise.

The rest of the book is about speech coding and speech recognition. My class did not cover the later chapters, so I only read the parts that applied to projects.

The book helped me understand speech processing journal articles which tend to assume a lot of background knowledge.

The theoretical background that this book provides is necessary; good engineers need to understand the underpinnings of their bag of tricks. It is painful, however, at times. To apply the information in this book, you will certainly need a good mentor and a lot of tinkering in MATLAB.

2 out of 5 stars Great Book on the Topic.......2003-01-19

The book is probably the best reference on the field. The authors take their utmost effort to explain even some of the most subtle details but in a unified theoretical fashion. Must buy for anyone interested in the Speech processing Area

5 out of 5 stars Ureka!!!.......2002-02-20

I was skeptical when I started on this book. But this book changed the way I looked a speech processing for ever. Wonderful classic on Speech Processing. I spent many moments with this book and came out with awe and respect for the authors. It is broad in its scope. Thanks IEEE for reissuing this classic.

A good book should make you think loud. This one does that job splendidly well.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting for students.......2000-01-05

Within this book, various algorithms can be found. The algorithms are implemented on various DSPs (TI C3x',AD 21xxx and etc) as well. Would be a great reference for students working on their DSP projects.

5 out of 5 stars a stimulating book.......1999-09-10

C Algorithms for Real-Time DSP, by Paul Embree, is a stimulating book. When I finished reading it, I went straight to my workstation and started experimenting with DSP algorithms. Embree clearly knows this subject and presents it in a straightforward manner. This is a refreshing change from the academic approach taken by the seven digital-signal processing books currently on my bookshelf. Not that Embree doesn't reference some heavy math. C Algorithms for Real-Time DSP is not for the mathematically weak of heart. To feel comfortable with the book, you should be familiar with time- and frequency-domain math as well as filter terminology&emdash;topics Embree reviews in the first part of the book. Reading this section reminded me of how my entire high-school education was summarized in my first week of college.

1 out of 5 stars it's a very poor-written book........1998-09-28

This book's title and topics sounds very attractive. Unfortunately, it has nothing more than like a reference card!! The content need more detail presentation and analysis to give readers something valuable. A book with only about 200 pages of headlines sale for more than $70, this is absolutely ridiculous!! The worst book in my colletion.

    Book Description

Discrete-time signal processing has had a momentous impact on advances in engineering and science over recent decades. The rapid progress of digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits in processing speed, functionality and cost-effectiveness has led to their ubiquitous employment in signal processing and transmission in diverse milieux.

The absence of training or pilot signals from many kinds of transmission – in, for example, speech analysis, seismic exploration and texture image analysis – necessitates the widespread use of blind equalization and system identification. There have been a great many algorithms developed for these purposes, working with one- or two-dimensional (2-d) signals and with single-input single-output (SISO) or multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), real or complex systems. It is now time for a unified treatment of this subject, pointing out the common characteristics and the sometimes close relations of these algorithms as well as learning from their different perspectives. Blind Equalization and System Identification provides such a unified treatment presenting theory, performance analysis, simulation, implementation and applications.

    Topics covered include:

    • SISO, MIMO and 2-d non-blind equalization (deconvolution) algorithms;

    • SISO, MIMO and 2-d blind equalization (deconvolution) algorithms;

    • SISO, MIMO and 2-d blind system identification algorithms;

    • algorithm analyses and improvements;

    • applications of SISO, MIMO and 2-d blind equalization/identification algorithms.

Each chapter is completed by exercises and computer assignments designed to further understanding and to give practical experience with the algorithms discussed.

This is a textbook for graduate-level courses in discrete-time random processes, statistical signal processing, and blind equalization and system identification. It contains material which will also interest researchers and practicing engineers working in digital communications, source separation, speech processing, image processing, seismic exploration, sonar, radar and other, similar applications.
