Book Description
The most influential web design book ever written, completely updated to cover motion graphics, broadband interactive design, and more. Since it was first published in 1995, designing web graphics has been the seminal resource for web designers to learn the basics and then the nuances of solid design for the web. Lynda Weinman has been updating the book to reflect changes in the technologies affecting web design, but dwg.4 has been largely rewritten from the ground up. Included is coverage of motion graphics made possible by the Flash phenomenon, broadband-enabled graphics issues, usability, and more. Lynda is rewriting the book so that all coverage of specific tools is focused on the essential functionality of these programs (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.) and not on version-specific attributes of the software, making the book relevant longer for more users.

Great book, as usual for Lynda ..........2007-10-01
I own a total of (4) of Lynda Weinman's books.
Very detailed, very informative, and an excellent reference to have on your book shelf.
I definitely recommend this author, and this particular book.
In the beginning and the future you need................2007-01-12
I have this book for a long time now. It's a very thorow guide for building a website from the very beginning. And I mean from the moment you are trying to get a customer intrested in your websites. telling you how to reach you customers, builiding a concept, video on your website, etc etc. Lynda is the best. I hope there is going to be a upgrade of this book telling you al the new gadgets.
Designing Web Graphics, 4th Edition.......2006-03-07
This is a good reference book for Web Designers. It covers the basic concepts of color usage on the Web. It also gives many hints and examples of good Web design.

An excellent book for the new web designer.......2005-12-11
I had heard of Lynda before and seen her website, but I had not read any of her books before this one. I was very impressed with the low level detail and lack of too much jargon in this book. It was short and to the point. The book was an easy and quick read due to her design. The book is good for basic reference information on web design. It touches on almost everything you encounter when designing websites. I was able to touch on the important topics and was given the right amount of theory / background necessary to understand the concepts. I found that chapters on information design architecture, colors, frames and cascading style sheets were very helpful. Although I already have a book on colors, I though the color charts were a nice touch. I agree that this book was not created to be the "bible" of web design. It gives you the basics and points you in the right direction for more fact-finding on your own. The links to other resources were also very helpful in that respect.
Overall, I think this is an excellent book for the new web designer, no matter which tool you are using to create the web pages. The broad approach to the design and notes regarding specific browser quirks was invaluable.

"Perhaps the best-written HTML tutorial ever."
This book occupies a unique spot in my opinion. It's "the competition." All other HTML/Web page learning or how-to books are trying to knock the crown from this book's head. While it may not be for everyone, it just does such a superb job that it defines the field. Congratulations, Elizabeth.
This is what I could classify as a true intermediate or advanced book. Elizabeth Castro doesn't waste time or steps trying to teach a newbie how to click here or create a text file. In fact, so much is assumed that this really can't be called a beginner book at all. So, if you know what you're doing or what you want, this book will serve you well.
The whole HTML thing is broken down into tasks: formatting, text, layout commands, cascading style sheets--the whole nine yards. Then individual HTML commands or tasks are illustrated one to a page. The steps fall down the outside of the page; illustrations line the page's inside.
While this is all a great way to learn HTML, I can still find room for improvement--though not at the expense of the format. For example, a reference or tear-out card would have been handy. And some topics, especially JavaScript, are glossed over too quickly to be useful. From personal experience, I know that some topics, such as FTP, could use even more hands-on examples.
If you "get it" when it comes to computers, and are ready to do some down-and-dirty HTML coding (and I'm not talking lame-old FrontPage here), this book will teach you the basics in no time. It will provide a firm foundation upon which you can easily build your Web pages for the future. --Dan Gookin
Book Description
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the lingua franca of the Web, and like any language, it's constantly evolving. That's why Elizabeth Castro has written
HTML 4 for the World Wide Web, Fourth Edition: Visual QuickStart Guide, an update to her blockbuster guide to HTML 4. You'll find all the concise, practical advice--and fun examples--that made the first edition a worldwide bestseller, plus entirely new coverage of debugging, JavaScript, and using tables for page layout, and an expanded section on Cascading Style Sheets.
Like all the books in the
Visual QuickStart series, this one breaks even the most complex tasks into easy-to-follow steps illustrated with hundreds of screenshots and the actual code. The book presumes no prior knowledge of HTML, making it the perfect introduction for beginners. But its tabbed format and info-packed appendixes (on special HTML characters and Web-safe colors, for example) also make it a handy and indispensable reference for those who build Web pages for a living. Find out why Amazon called the previous edition a "dream guide" to HTML.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most productive book!.......2007-10-04
The sixth edition has continued to live up to its name. It is indeed a 'Visual Quickstart Guide.' Unlike other books, it presents clear and concise instructions, and no lengthy text. Everything is delivered in point forms. Useful tips are sprinkled over the text here and there as well.
It can also serve as a quick reference tool that is easy to look up to. The appendices consists of the following: some commonly used (X)HTML elements and attributes, CSS properties and values, and some javascipt events. It is definitely worth it to own a copy of it.
It is a beginner's book and it offers more than enough to get you a decent layout for your web pages. Ideal for any novice designer to wants get productive fast.
Great book - bad binding!.......2007-10-04
This updated edition is welcomed as it was written with standards in mind. Very well done.
The binding on this book is horrible. Most of the pages in my copy have come out of the binding!
Good beginner's book!.......2007-09-23
Anyone who picks up this book will be extremely pleased! This introduction to xhtml/css by Castro delivers concise and clear step by step instructions on how to make webpages work. She also has a cool color chart on the back that you can check out for style sheets and the book is in color for easier reading!
Sixth edition best one yet.......2007-09-08
Liz Castro makes it as easy as it can be to learn how to code and control your own web site. You don't need expensive WYSIWYG design applications. In fact, you probably own text editors that will do the job nicely. Purchasing this book in tandem with "Creating a Web Page with HTML" by Liz Castro will have you up and running in, literally, a few hours.
HTML 4 for the world wide web.......2007-09-05
Very good book. A little heavy on the deprecated tags good intro material for JavaScript and CSS.
Book Description
Computer Networks, 4E is the only introductory computer networking book written by authors who have had first-hand experience with many of the protocols discussed in the book, who have actually designed some of them as well, and who are still actively designing the computer networks today.
This newly revised edition continues to provide an enduring, practical understanding of networks and their building blocks through rich, example-based instruction. The authors' focus is on the why of network design, not just the specifications comprising today's systems but how key technologies and protocols actually work in the real world to solve specific problems. The new edition makes less use of computer code to explain protocols than earlier editions. Moreover, this new edition shifts the focus somewhat higher in the protocol stack where there is generally more innovative and exciting work going on at the application and session layers than at the link and physical layers.
* Completely updated with new sidebar discussions that cover the deployment status of protocols described in the book.
* Addition of sizeable number of new exercises and solutions.
* Downloadable Opnet network simulation software and lab experiments manual.
* New and revised instructor support material, including Powerpoint slides, eps version of figures appearing in the text; sample exams; lecture notes; UNIX sockets programming assignments.

Highly recommended for any foundation level Computer Networks course.
Excellent cover & page quality.
Great textbook.......2007-08-27
I've read all of the standard CS networks textbooks for both undergrad and grad classes. This one is my favorite as both an introduction to networking and as a reference for graduate coursework. The new 4th edition updates and expands coverage in the 4 years since the 3rd edition was covered. Highly recommended.

Great book.......2007-03-22
Ok, my written english isn't good at all, but I'd just wanna say how much I love this book. I have been studying html and css for some time now, and I already knew something when I bought this book, and what I think great about it is that it's so detailed about how the things work in html, xhtml and css that it's like if I was learning everything from the beginning again, but this time knowing exactly what I was doing and why.
Well, that's it.. sorry for my english.
For both beginners and experts.......2006-06-28
I've taught HTML and e-commerce at the university level for about a decade now. This book is the best I have found. I use it as my personal reference. I require it for my classes.
It covers the essentials. It gives clear examples. It is organized in a logical order that works. It can be used by someone who has never tried to build a web page, and also has enough 'meat' so that those who have been building pages for years can find useful information and tips throughout.
I just wish I could find books on some of my other subjects that are as well written and organized as this.
Ok.......2006-03-24
This book is ok. I had to get it for a class. The writing is alittle hard to follow, but it is a good reference.
Great for beginners.......2006-03-22
I purchased this book to use in a class I was taking. I had no prior knowledge of HTML, but this book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to designing web pages. I found the chapters very easy to follow and the exercises were kind of fun as you got to practice what you just read about. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn HTML.
BBB complaint going on.......2005-12-23

Book Description
@COURSE = For one-semester, undergraduate/graduate introductory computer networking courses in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, CIS, MIS, and Business Departments. Written by a best-selling author and leading computer networking authority, this book builds a comprehensive picture of the technologies behind Internet applications. It answers the basic question how do computer networks and Internets operate? in the broadest sense and includes an early optional introduction to network programming and applications. The book provides a comprehensive, self-contained tour through all of networking from the lowest levels of data transmission and wiring to the highest levels of application software, explaining how underlying technologies provide services and how Internet applications use those services. At each level, it shows how the facilities and services provided by lower levels are used and extended in the next level. Emphasis on Internet technologies and applications provides readers with substantial sections on Internetworking and Network Applications. For individuals with little or no background in the subject.
Customer Reviews:
Cursory at worst - well written at best , but used, not new........2006-05-29
As others have said this text is suitable for beginners, do not purchase this text if you seek detail of in-depth understanding of any specific aspect of networking. However my gripe is with Amazon, this text was used, not new when I received it. New texts don't come with Checkpoint stickers inside and a sheet of notebook paper with an ad for "roomate wanted" somewhere in the vicinity of Idaho State University and a phone number and e-mail address for Deb. Also Deb might want to be more careful as the back of that same sheet listed three account numbers.
Obviously Deb didn't use the text long, it was in good shape and she never opened the CD but Amazon owes me a refund and explanation.
A good introduction for newbies..........2005-07-06
This is a very superficial exposure to computer networks. If you have no previous knowledge on the subject, this would be a good place to start. However, if you already know the basics and want to get your hands dirty, go get Tannenbaum's Computer Networks - there you will find everything explained in detail.
One more thing about the book - in my opinion the author could have structured it much better - some chapters seem out of order. Also, as I noted above, it is a little stingy on facts...
Too much prose........2003-12-09
At the first time, I used this book as my reference in my networking area. But later I can not keep up this fully-prosed book anymore. At last, I had to change my reference book to another.
A textbook that doesn't put you to sleep.......2002-10-02
I'm a CS student taking a Networks course so I could be considered a 'beginner'. This book is easy to read and understand and provides a great overview without being too bogged down in details. The short, concise chapters make it very readable. Great introduction to the subject!
My only gripe in that the file/folder names on the CD are corrupted and there isn't any support on the book's site.
Brief and to the point.......2002-06-03
I had to use this book for a networking class at my university. It presents a nice overview and goes a little in depth into various aspects of networking. It covers networking from the ground up, explaining each layer of the OSI and the components that compose each layer. I would recommend it to a beginner or amateur to networking.

The Domain Naming System (DNS) is a glorious thing. It takes familiar Internet network and machine names (like "amazon.com") and converts them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (like "208.35.218.15") that are meaningful to routers and therefore useful for identifying the machine you want to reach. What's amazing is that DNS enables someone in Germany to refer, by name, to a computer in Mongolia even if no one in Germany has ever accessed the distant machine before. It's pretty much self-configuring, too: No human effort in Germany is necessary to make the Mongolian machine reachable by name. DNS and BIND explains how DNS works better for this than any other piece of documentation, printed or otherwise. The work of Paul Albitz and Cricket Liu, now in its fourth revision, has long been considered a classic among systems administrators and network architects, particularly those with a Unix bent.
The fourth edition is mainly an update: The authors have added coverage of incremental and conditional zone transfer with BIND's new NOTIFY features, as well as of Transaction Signatures (TSIG), and DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC). Sections on firewalling and DNS for IPv6 addresses have been expanded. Throughout, Albitz and Liu maintain their impeccable style, combining text and illustrative listings into an educational whole. --David Wall
Topics covered: The Domain Naming System (DNS) and how it's implemented by BIND (through versions 8.2.3 and 9.1.0), how to set up BIND, how to configure MX records for mail service, parent and child domains, NOTIFY, and DNS security.
Book Description
DNS and BIND is about one of the Internet's fundamental building blocks: the distributed host information database that's responsible for translating names into addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services. As the authors say in the preface, if you're using the Internet, you're already using DNS--even if you don't know it. This edition brings you up to date on the new 9.1.0 and 8.2.3 versions of BIND along with the older 4.9 version. There's also more extensive coverage of NOTIFY, IPv6 forward and reverse mapping, transaction signatures, and the new DNS Security Extensions; and a new section on accommodating Windows 2000 clients, servers and Domain Controllers. Whether you're an administrator involved daily with DNS or a user who wants to be more informed about the Internet and how it works, you'll find this book essential reading. Topics include:
- What DNS does, how it works, and when you need to use it
- How to find your own place in the Internet's name space
- Setting up name servers
- Using MX records to route mail
- Configuring hosts to use DNS name servers
- Subdividing domains (parenting)
- Securing your name server: restricting who can query your server, preventing unauthorized zone transfers, avoiding bogus name servers, etc.
- Mapping one name to several servers for load sharing
- Troubleshooting: using nslookup, reading debugging output, common problems
- DNS programming, using the resolver library and Perl's Net::DNS module
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource.......2007-09-14
This book is a good in-depth resource for anyone who wants a very comprehensive understanding of DNS hosting and troubleshooting. You can use it as a reference, reading sections as you need them, or read it cover to cover. I've opted for the former and am about half-way through. So, far I've read about things I've never been able to find good information for on the web. Keep up the good work!
By far the best DNS introduction.......2007-08-07
This book is the best investment I have made in my knowledge of DNS. I think any network admin should have this book on their desk at all times. It should become a bed side reading for anybody who is serious about TCP/IP protocols. DNS may be a pretty tricky topic to understand for many people. It uses both TCP and UDP for its queries and gets pretty convoluted as you dive into it. This books demystifies it very well. There is a very clear distinction between zones and domains. I have not seen that many materials clearly explaining the difference between the two. The book gives you a taste of what threats you may face running a DNS server. It explains how to perform zone transfers and zone delegations and clearly defines which suite of protocols is used to accomplish it.
This book can be a reference as well as a textbook read. I recommend it to all people out on the internet.
This is the reference manual for DNS/BIND.......2007-07-09
If you work with DNS/BIND for a living, you either already have this book, or know someone you can borrow it from. It's the one to own.
wordy and confusing.......2007-05-29
If you are running a network on tcp/ip then you need DNS. It does not matter if you are connected to the internet or not. If you are running NT 4.0 and WINS, you still need a DNS server. The whole point to DNS is to provide some type of matching of ip numbers to host names - including routers, printer servers, and switches that support it.
The problem with this book, as with every book I have read where the authors proudly state their grade point average, or how great their employer is, is that the content is designed to be confusing - just like a college book. It's great to waste a lot of time marvelling at how someone read the RFC's and talked to the guys and gals who produced the RFC's and then made a book on it. The first warning came on page 30 "The Whole Enchilada". No this is not a cook book, it is supposed to be on DNS and BIND.
Anyway to make along story short, this book will not tell you, step by step, how to set up a DNS server and what to be aware of. What you have to do is to get a really good distribution such as SUSE 9.0 and later, and experiment. Read this book and make notes and practice and get online help. Also you should get the "samba by example", start at the beginning, and concentrate on chapter 3 where they show you how to configure DNS with particular emphasis on the reverse zone.
Yes, this book is chock-full of good examples, and if you are in charge of a network you really need this book. However, this book is more of a decoding excercie than a learning excercise.
There's a reason this is the DNS bible.......2007-05-09
Anyone running BIND should have this book. It is that important. If you're simply trying to get a resolver for your home, run a private domain with ddns, or be authoritative and exposed to the internet, this book has concrete examples and help for you to do anything. I strongly recommend it.

Book Description
FreeBSD is by far the most popular version of BSD®, the legendary operating system that has contributed a great deal to every version of Unix® in use today (including Mac OS® X). Originally a community effort by the University of California at Berkeley, FreeBSD was aimed at making Unix a little friendlier and easier to use. By the time other free operating systems came along, BSD was firmly established and very reliable. And it continues to be today. For seven years, the FreeBSD community has relied on Greg Lehey's classic, The Complete FreeBSD, to guide them through its configuration and administration. The 4th edition, covering version 5 of FreeBSD, is now available through O'Reilly Community Press. The Complete FreeBSD is an eminently practical guidebook that explains not only how to get a computer up and running with the FreeBSD operating system, but also how to turn it into a highly functional and secure server that can host large numbers of users and disks, support remote access, and provide web service, mail service, and other key parts of the Internet infrastructure. The book provides in-depth information on installation and updates, back-ups, printers, RAID, various Internet services, firewalls, the graphical X Window system, and much more. Author Greg Lehey is a member of the FreeBSD core team and has been developing, documenting, and advocating for FreeBSD for nearly ten years. Whether you're an experienced Unix user or just interested in learning more about this free operating system and how you can put it to work for you, this do-it-yourself BSD documentation will provide the information you need. The Complete FreeBSD is the second release in the O'Reilly Community Press Series. Unlike classic O'Reilly animal books, which are created to fill an information void, the Community Press titles provide convenient printed copies of documentation that is already available online. O'Reilly's role in the series is limited to providing manufacturing and distribution services rather than editorial development, so that each Community Press title reflects the editorial voice and organization of the community that has created it.

The Complete FreeBSD.......2007-02-21
This book is an in-depth and excellent source of information on the installation, configuration, and administration of FreeBSD UNIX. It covers everything about FreeBSD and does not copy but goes beyond the usual MAN pages. It should be in every FreeBSD user's library. Although it covers Version 5, it is still appropriate for persons now using FreeBSD Version 6.2. The author, Greg Lehey, has issued a free electronic version of the book [...], but the paper edition is an inexpensive way to have everything in print. If you have, or are interested in FreeBSD PC-BSD [...], I strongly recommend you buy this book.
Excellent book on FreeBSD, maybe the only one you'll need.......2006-01-13
This is a very good book on FreeBSD. It touches on just about every aspect of installing, configuring, and running FreeBSD. It leans more towards desktop use then server use, but there is lots of good information on configuring network services. There is also a huge section just on networking itself.
Just by reading this book you can tell the author Greg Lehey is a smart, seasoned, no-nonsense person that is very familiar with FreeBSD. He tells you the recommended way of doing things, then follows up with his recommendation on how to do it, and why you should consider it. He is also smart in his handling of technologies that are in a rapid state of change. He points out to you the things that might have changed since the book has been printed, and where to look for updated information.
This book does stray sometimes into more general subjects such as how networking works, how CRTs work, basic UNIX commands, etc., but it's all very related, and to the point. He integrates this type of information so well that it's not distracting and really adds to the value of the book, a feat I've seen many authors fail trying to accomplish. It rounds it out to not just be a FreeBSD guide, but almost like an operator's manual to the computer. So it's suitable for not only for advanced users but for novices as well. But I wouldn't recommend this as your first UNIX book, and it certainly would not work as your first computer book.
Since the book covers so many aspects, some are not quite as detailed as others, but he always details the most important aspects, and again explains why. Due to the scope of the book, I think he covered everything as well as you could without making the book too unmanageable.
For a lot of people this may be the only book you'll need. If your wanting a full blown server administrator guide, this book may not quite fit the bill.
I am very happy with it, 5 stars worth, and I would recommend it to any one interested in learning more about FreeBSD.
A Must Have, But Could Be Better.......2005-05-17
The two books that I use most frequently when administering my FreeBSD server, are this one by Lehey and UNIX System Administration Handbook by Nemeth et al. Lehey's book is easy to understand, and covers most instances where FreeBSD varies from other Unix varieties.
My chief complaint with the book (and hence only 4 stars), is that Lehey seems to be a bit conflicted as to whether he wants his book to be a tutorial or a reference book. I have only read the 4th edition, and I suspect some of this problem is due to hauling along portions of the book that used to be necessary which really are not anymore. For example, when it comes to explaining the installation process, the book does not add much value to the free online guide, "FreeBSD Handbook" available on the FreeBSD website. In fact, due to the ever evolving nature of software, the "FreeBSD Handbook" is often more up to date than Lehey's book. In particular, Lehey's book still explains how to install XFree86, while the current version of the OS used XOrg.
Lehey does excel in giving a more thorough overview of most other aspects of FreeBSD that do not change quite as quickly. He also does a decent job of pointing the reader to other resources for further information.
Lehey created the Vinum Volume Manager (which I admittedly know nothing about, and I skipped his chapter on it), so it is no surprise that the chapter on it is in the top third largest chapters in his book.
My advice, if you are just trying out FreeBSD, you can probably get by with the free "FreeBSD Handbook" online. If you plan on maintaining a FreeBSD machine, this book is definitely handy to have on the bookshelf.
Not the book to learn FreeBSD.......2005-03-14
I bought this book based on the reviews here. I know very little about using Unix. I flipped through the book and found it easy to read as well as covering all the topics that other books missed. What bothered me was the size of the book which made me think some topics might get skimmed over.
This book lacks focus. It may start on a topic then wander off, never to return. Some topics are introduced but never explained. Others go into more detail as you go deeper into the book...maybe.
At times I felt the writer assumed you had some knowledge of FreeBSD/Unix but, if this is true, why would he explain some very basic operations, including installation?
I would return this book if I had not marked it up as I started reading. I had almost bought "FreeBSD Unleashed" having read part of it a year ago at the library and now I wish I did.
For freebsd novices to experts.......2005-03-09
When I first was learning to use freebsd 5.3 this the book I was recommended by online experts. I must say Greg Lehey does an excellent job explaining all aspects that the general end-user would need to know to get freebsd up and running.
The most useful section for me was the shared installed section because I did not want to get rid of Microsoft Windows right from the start.
For me, I made a master list of tasks that I wanted to do with freebsd and stepped thur that list day by day with this book close by.
The only source of better freebsd information comes from the online handbook at freebsd.org which is expect to be more verbose and technical if you care about those things.
I find that after using this book that I can actually understand the technical handbook and understand why things are the way they are.
Bottom line to all new freebsd users/admins read this book first then hit the handbook online, which together will give you a great knowledge base for dealing with freebsd.
Only thing I think Greg should add to his book is IPX Novell Netware support which there is not a lot of documentation on this, but I managed to piece it together thur some Internet sources.

A lot of computer-security textbooks approach the subject from a defensive point of view. "Do this, and probably you'll survive a particular kind of attack," they say. In refreshing contrast, Hacking Exposed, Second Edition talks about security from an offensive angle. A Jane's-like catalog of the weaponry that black-hat hackers use is laid out in full. Readers see what programs are out there, get a rundown on what the programs can do, and benefit from detailed explanations of concepts (such as wardialing and rootkits) that most system administrators kind of understand, but perhaps not in detail. The book also walks through how to use the more powerful and popular hacker software, including L0phtCrack. This new edition has been updated extensively, largely with the results of "honeypot" exercises (in which attacks on sacrificial machines are monitored) and Windows 2000 public security trials. There's a lot of new stuff on e-mail worms, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and attacks that involve routing protocols.
The result of all of this familiarity with bad-guy tools is a leg up on defending against them. Hacking Exposed wastes no time in explaining how to implement the countermeasures--where they exist--that will render known attacks ineffective. Taking on the major network operating systems and network devices one at a time, the authors tell you exactly what Unix configuration files to alter, what Windows NT Registry keys to change, and what settings to make in NetWare. They spare no criticism of products with which they aren't impressed, and don't hesitate to point out inherent, uncorrectable security weaknesses where they find them. This book is no mere rehashing of generally accepted security practices. It and its companion Web site are the best way for all of you network administrators to know thine enemies. --David Wall
Topics covered:
- Security vulnerabilities of operating systems, applications, and network devices
- Administrative procedures that will help defeat them
- Techniques for hacking Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Novell NetWare, and Unix
- Strategies for breaking into (or bringing down) telephony devices, routers, and firewalls
Book Description
“The seminal book on white-hat hacking and countermeasures.... Should be required reading for anyone with a server or a network to secure.” --Bill Machrone, PC Magazine
This brand-new edition of the best-selling security book covers all the latest hacks and countermeasures and includes a bonus DVD with the authors’ famous “Hacking Exposed Live” presentation!

Excellent book for the beginner.......2007-08-01
While starting out in a new career, this book has been recommended to me time and time again. I have some background in security and penetration testing however this book takes you into a deeper understanding of how things work. I strongly recommend it for the beginner as well as the seasoned Information Security Professional.
Good learning reference for those interested in learning........2007-07-30
This book offers an excellent overview of techniques, though some outdated, to exploit and secure systems. The book is easy to read with just enough technical jargon to teach you something. It covers most major exploits and the techniques used to secure your system against them. I have tested many of the exploits and tools and found them to work very well attacking and defending. If you are new to computer security this is a must-read. If you are an expert in the field this is a great reference.
vedy good.......2007-03-31
The book is one of the best that i've read.
It speaks about hacking in a technical way and it's full of information
An essential book for Linux admins.......2007-03-07
I read this book cover to cover and bookmarked half the pages with tips I want to use. It's not just a book on preventing hacks...it's full of great productivity tips as well. Nowadays, I rarely buy computer books because all the info is on the internet. But this book is an exception. The internet can't substitute for the education you'll get by walking through this one page at a time.
Information Security.......2006-10-10
I had to purchase this book for college but it is a great read. One of the only textbooks that I have used that was actually interesting. They give clear examples and make it easy to follow thier explanations. Great book if you want to learn about hacking and some of the issues it involves.

Beginners READ THIS!.......2006-05-18
If you are a JAVA beginner you MUST have this book. It's an excellent reference book and even today (after so many years in the Java industry I still consult with this book)
I have read numerable books in the area and this one really rocks (again, beginners only).
It takes the reader step by step (and with gloves made of silk) and explains the concept of OOP with great and useful examples.
I liked the chapter on the multithreading since it was illustrated with excellent examples.

Good book but would be helpful to have some excercises.......2004-11-05
This is one of the better books on J2SE 1.4. In fact, I had first started reading Core Java 2 book but it was very confusing. Mr.Schildt has really arranged the topics well.
The only drawback is that there are no excercises for the initial chapters on Java programming. A few such problems would go a long way in helping readers get really comfortable with the different aspects of Java and OOPs
Begineers Delight !!!.......2004-10-25
The best way to learn a new programming language is to churn a lot of code and get familiar with the language semantics and richness. Mr. Schildt follows the same teaching paradigm and initiates a novice in the world of OOPs programming using Java.
The book is of course not suitable for a person who has some background in Java. The book definitely targets the uninitiated in the OOPs concept and builds up considerably upon the concepts gradually. Some pros about the book:
* The book covers the language basics very neatly.
* Numerous examples make the comprehension better.
* Chapter on 'Multithreading' and 'Exceptions' are well written and neatly illustrated with working examples.
* Treatment of Java Event Delegation Model is one of the best among all the available texts.
Some cons for the same:
* Less focus on Swing and more on AWT.
* Very little coverage of important topics like 'RMI' and 'Serialisation'.
* Poor treatment of important topics like 'Inner Classes'.
All in all from a novices' perspective, the book presents a good starting point. But from an advanced programmers' point of view - the book has still miles to go.
Good book.......2004-08-19
Not the right place to start off learning the language but definetely a must have for serious Java programmers.
The only reason I give it a four is because of its bad paper quality and non-colored presentation.
A Good Reference Book.......2004-06-23
I got this book as a prize at a Java User Group meeting. Overall, it's a good reference book to keep. One thing I wish it had covered is the JSPs, since it does cover the Servlets.

Investing Online for Dummies, 5th edition.......2007-01-10
The delivery was on time. The book is good for me
You don't have to buy this. .......2007-01-03
I came here to write a review for this book, and found that a reviewer below, "A reader", had already written what I was going to write. This book provides a reader with no information, but with long lists of websites to look at. You can access those websites most often just wasting time (like "A reader" already said). Using search engines like Google/Yahoo is much better than thumbing through this book.
Good Concise Overview to Get One Started.......2005-05-15
You can't watch television these days without getting bombarded with ads for on line brokerage companies. What's been missing has been a centralized source for information about the whole thing. This book provides that source. It's not complete - if it were it would be so big that you couldn't carry it around - but it's a great start.
You can read this book from cover to cover in just a few hours. That is, just a few hours if you don't take the time to go out on the web looking at the things she suggests. And that right there is the key to this book. Here is a good start that covers the whole field from A to Z, and at nearly each and every point along the way she points you to web sites for more information about specific points.
The problem with going to the web for more information, of course, is that web sites appear, go away, merge or whatever. She admits this, but accepts this risk and gives you multiple sites (you couldn't possibly visit all that she mentions) or suggests ways to find a missing or dead site.
This is a great way to get the basic information you need before getting started with selecting a broker and deciding what to buy.
Get Up To Speed With New Strategies, Tools and Resources.......2005-04-07
This newest edition of "Investing Online for Dummies" reflects the latest changes and improvements to online investing Web sites. Addresses building an online information system, setting up a basic investment strategy, determining how much to invest, selecting an online broker and trading online, finding the right investments, performing Internet transactions securely, saving on commissions, managing a portfolio, and much more.
A great guide for online investing .......2005-03-22
As I surf the Web, I often feel that it's like visiting a library where all the books have been spilled on the floor. The information is there but I don't know where to begin my search. "Investing Online For Dummies" explained how to get started, steered me to free or low cost online services, pointed out the important parts of Web sites, and showed me the process of online investing.
