5 out of 5 stars Coreldraw 12: The Official Guide.......2006-03-16

I selected this book after reading reviews on Amazon.com. I found the book an excellent supplement to the lynda.com training I purchased for the same program. It helped to fill in the gaps and expand upon the online training. I cannot compare it to the Coreldraw 12 unleashed cd since I have not viewed it, but I am pleased with my purchase. I enjoyed the book from start to end and that says a lot for a discriminating reader of technical publications. Because I use coreldraw 12 primarily to construct business cards, I do wish the book would have addressed color matching. However, there are other sources on this subject on the net. Enough said - great book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for CorelDraw 12.......2006-03-01

This is an extremely comprehensive guide that is packed full of clear illustrations. I consider the volume to be very readable and useful for a range of users, i.e., users new to CorelDraw or intermediate level and above. No wonder they call it the "Only Authorized Reference on CorelDraw 12"!

2 out of 5 stars bad paradigm.......2005-12-20

If you're looking for a book to get you up and running with CorelDraw 12, this ain't it. This book uses the "Start with the File Menu..." paradigm. The first several chapters are taken up with mind numbingly endless descriptions of menus and tools and options, how to save files (duh) and discussions of features, the function of which the novice user has no clue. You don't actually get to draw anything until way into the second section of the book. (Note that I said Section, not Chapter). Even then, the explanations are so obtuse and convoluted that it is almost impossible for anyone without a vector based application background to figure out what's going on.
I suppose if one has experience with Corel or the Adobe products, this book makes sense and probably covers all the bells and whistles. But if you're a relatively computer literate person who just wants to learn how to use CorelDraw 12 from the ground up, get a different book.

5 out of 5 stars Companion site works fine!.......2005-11-28

I use this book to supplement our graphic illustration course at a local college. It's amazingly precise for a third party manual and extremely thorough in covering every aspect of the program. We follow the tutorials to create our practical design projects.

One reviewer mentioned he had troubles with the companion Web site, but we've never had a problem downloading the files. We follow the Downloads link and locate the book from the alphabetized list. It's a couple of clicks at most.

1 out of 5 stars No Working Companion Site as Advertised on the Book Cover.......2005-11-10

I went to the McGraw Hill page set aside for the images in the book so that I could use them to work along with the book. This is always a very big factor in my decision to buy software oriented books. Most software books now have a companion site if a CD was not included. Literally, over 90% of the 20 software books I have bought in the past three months have a companion site online if they do not supply images and other goodies on a CD in the book itself. Being able to follow along with the same images is an invaluable learning tool. This book advertises the availability of images online on the cover and within. I'm afraid however, that the web links on the companion web page lead to nowhere and McGraw Hill's technical support person could not have cared less. He never got back to me as promised, the links are still broken and if I could I would return the book. The person I spoke to simply didn't care about my problem (apathetic beyond description)-it was quite evident in his tone of voice and in the ultimate not fixing of the problem. And yes, I spoke to the correct department. This is all Unfortunate, as this book has the potential to be a terrific workbook. Now it is nothing more than a run of the mill book and I don't like to buy from companies that do not stand behind their products and mislead their customers as to what their purchase includes. Shame on you Osborne/McGraw Hill. Hopefully, someone from this mega book supplier will see this review and fix the companion site. For now , I will not be buying any books from Osborne/McGraw Hill or any of its associated companies.

5 out of 5 stars A nice way to learn.......2004-12-08

I've started working with CorelDraw 12 and this guide and am making a lot of progress. I find this type of method is a great way to learn, not as tedious as just a manual alone, and watching the instructional videos clues you in a lot faster to how to use features. I'm very satisfied with this aid.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Boot Camp Partner.......2004-11-23

I recently attended one of Foster's Corel Draw Boot Camps and feel that "CorelDRAW 12 Unleashed" is the perfect partner to that great learning experience. The book on CD-ROM puts everything, as far as useful information about DRAW and PHOTO-PAINT, right at your finger tips in a way that is easy to comprehend. This book has become my Corel "bible" and I urge anyone who uses the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite to invest in it, as well as one of Foster's Boot Camps.

1 out of 5 stars Amateurish at best.......2004-11-18

Don't be fooled by the reviews you read here. They're completely wrong -- it looks like the author wrote them! The content of this ebook is difficult to read, badly written, and poorly illustrated. The structure is unorganized and the author obviously has no professional design or illustration skills training. Absolutely terrible stuff.

I strongly recommend the CorelDRAW Official Guide instead - it's the complete opposite.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the novice.......2007-05-30

If you are a novice at this type stuff you need this dvd to help you "unleash" the potential of this program.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all levels of users.......2007-03-09

This book is a good tool for all level of users. There are different approaches to old commands and a discussion of the new features in X3. I have been using Corel for 7 years and found this book enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars very detailed tutorial.......2006-11-15

This tutorial I find very detailed, and I am working through it chapter by chapter, going through the lesson in the book first and then viewing the video. Every time there is a video for the exercise there is a hint with the title in the book so they are easy to find. Sometimes if I do not manage the exercise in the book correctly the little video helps me to understand it better, and the penny drops.
The book contains both theoretical background and practical exercises.
The only downside was I had to print the book out as I have difficulties reading it on screen and at the same time following the exercises.

5 out of 5 stars This book is perfect for everyone!.......2006-05-26

I've been a Corel user since version 6 and I've learned everything mostly by trial-and-error and by searching help files. Needless to say, I've had projects that I've spent a whole day trying to do. Along the way, I've missed opportunities to become more efficient because I didn't get formal training and I didn't buy a book...until now. This book is great. It has all the best information on tools I THOUGHT I knew how to use. I honestly thought that I would only need about 10% of what this book had to offer. After all, I'm a long-time, experienced user who just wanted to fill in the gaps. After reading this book, I have more than DOUBLED my knowledge and it was an easy read. Thanks Foster!

3 out of 5 stars Printing and lockup issue.......2007-05-15

I originally thought this was a great product until I tried to print. It simply would not print if you used dropdshadows or blends or any graphic features. Their technical service was rude and I finally found you need to print postscript level 1. The quality of printing declined from 12 to X3 as well. Features that were easily accessible thru shortcut key are now hidden in dockers, ie text formating and arrows on dimensions. BMPs and JPEGs slow the program down and then it locks and crashes much worse than 12. I upgraded 5 artists who only use the upgrade to translate files.

5 out of 5 stars Never played with CorelDRAW? No problem........2002-11-02

Not having played with previous CorelDRAW products in the past didn't slow me down in getting in the groove of CorelDRAW 10! This is a great resource for beginners. Not only does the author impeccably dig into many areas of the software, but he also makes plenty of useful suggestions on technique. And, technique, for me, is where it's at! The language is easy to understand and the illustrations depict clearly the instructions given. I give it a 5! (My, I think I just had a Siskel & Ebert moment!) :)

3 out of 5 stars It's a standard volume of what you need to know.......2002-04-12

We use it as a daily reference tool for graphic design. It seemed the best choice among several.

5 out of 5 stars THE CorelDRAW Bible !.......2001-02-13

This book has obviously been written by someone who has worked with this program for years. It's easy-to-follow, well organized, and explains all of CorelDRAW 10's sophisticated capabilities and technical workings using clear, concise, and well-illustrated terms. I've already found myself utilizing dozens of the of tips and tricks, of which there must be hundreds. After a few weeks of working through the chapters, I've yet to find a topic or effect not covered. A nice touch is the tear-out shortcuts guide for the keyboard and the CD containing hundreds of art, image, and effects files - plus a bonus of 6 additional chapters. There are also special sections on using Corel's new RAVE program, built-in web image utilities, the Tracing application, and entire chapters dedicated to customization and VBA program scripting. This book is a leap ahead of any previous editions of the CorelDRAW Official Guides and quite frankly is one of the best books I've read on any technical subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - one complaint.......2001-02-09

As a long time Coreldraw user, I found this to be one of the best Coredraw books that I have read (especially helpful since the Coreldraw 10 ships with such a flimsy manual that is pretty much useless). I found this book to be well written and extremely easy to follow. All the features of the program are covered in such great detail that I couldn't wait to try them out. My one BIG COMPLAINT - is that it took me a while to realize that "type" "fills" and "outlines" are not covered in the book, but instead included on the extra "bonus" CD PDF chapters. I think that these are such basic elements of Coreldraw that they should have been included in the book instead of on the "bonus" CD. To get this information you have to either view or print out the 200+ pages from the PDF files. I feel that these chapters should have been included in the book (perhaps putting the information on RAVE and Scripts, etc. on the CD instead) and that Osborne/Corel Press should clarify on the cover what the "bonus" CD includes and let the consumer decide if they feel like taking the time to finish printing out what should have been included in the book. Even with my one complaint, I do feel this is great reference book to help you learn or update your skills with Coreldraw.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, thorough, and invaluable.......2001-02-04

The information and excercises in this book are easy to understand and straightforward to follow. Often confusing design and illustration concepts are very well presented and illustrated. The level of detail is exceptional and the book's thoroughness is impressive. All of CorelDRAW 10's effects are covered with tips for web and print publishing. It includes chapters on Corel's new RAVE animation program, VBA, and Web graphics. It also comes with a convenient quick keys guide which detaches from the cover and the companion disc includes 200 additional pages of content in PDF form, tutorial files, CorelDRAW drawings, clip art, animated GIFs, digital photographs, and special effect files to use with the program. Hats off to the author and publisher. This is likely the best computer book I've seen yet.

2 out of 5 stars This book IS for dummies!.......1999-08-30

Author took the title too literally. He fills the book with corny analogies and bad jokes. Covers the most basic uses of CorelDraw and nothing more. Buy a more sophisticated title!

3 out of 5 stars It is witty, but needs some improvement.......1999-05-02

CorelDraw 8 for Dummies

In general the book is fun and easy to read. I used it to learn CorelDraw for the first time. Everything is explained in plain English. The only two things that slightly annoyed me were: emphasizing the use of the rarely-used "keyboard equivalents" instead of the mouse and some unnecessary chunks of text with vague explanations that could be easily avoided. The witty descriptions are refreshing for someone, but only for one who is not in a rush to obtain the core of information.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to get on with, novice to just intermediate........1998-11-30

One of the those books that is nice for begineers but a little annoying for those with computer experience. On the whole it was good (and the humour was excellent) but it is designed as a book for beginners. Having said that, there was enough in it for myself (experience in computers but new to Corel 8) to buy it; and it at least touched on Corel 3D which was more than the official guide seemed to. If you are a beginner, get it; intemediate well maybe, and if you are already using Corel products then I wouldn't bother. I would like to see a CorelDraw 8 for Thickies which would cover the intemediate to advance topics. Come on guys, the market's out there!

5 out of 5 stars Finally found the kind of help that I required........1998-06-01

Enjoyed attending the 'chat' that CorelDraw sponsors. They recommended good books, however, none were expressely for CorelDraw 8, which is the new. Even though the review here is not favorable for DorelDraw 8 for Dummies, I bought it. It is great! The book explains so patiently all the difficult to understand tools that must be used. I have been struggling until now. I will return here to write a full review in a few weeks. Meanwhile, those who are new to CorelDraw and own CorelDraw 8 will find the book delightfully helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Useless.......1998-04-14

Well, I don't expect much of "Dummies ..." but this one is below average. You will learn more from your mouse clicks and CorelDRAW help than from this book - don't waste money unless you are trully very, very lazy about learning (but than CorelDRAW is not for you anyway).

5 out of 5 stars WOW! You won't be sorry you got this book.......2005-04-09

If you are a new or old user of Corel Draw, and you have just up-graded to Corel Draw 11, this is the book to learn from. With it's 800 pages to go through you will find every thing you need to know to get you up and designing in no time. Steve Bain has done a great job of writing this book, so even the new user can under stand how the tools work and what there for. It is a little pricey, but it is worth every cent. If your going to learn this programe, I would recomand this book to be the first one you get and it may be the last one you need to teach you about Corel Draw 11. I have not needed any other book but this one to learn the programe. I keep it by my computer and use it almost every time I'm using Corel Draw 11.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent manual for the novice or expert!.......2003-08-31

This book is an excellent manual for understanding the logistical operations of CorelDraw 11. It is written with a tone geared towards one who has never used this program before yet does not lack in expanded intricacies of operations.

An experienced user can flip through the section needed to learn shortcuts and streamline processes, while the novice can start from page 1 and treat it as a tutorial.

This book makes a great addition to the library of anyone who uses CorelDraw 11.

5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah !.......2003-08-26

I couldn't help the religious reference since this book has quickly become my new Bible. I have been a loyal follower of "The Official Guides" and "CorelDRAW 11" has lived up to my expectations, if not exceeded them in many respects.

This book was a pleasant surprise, despite being a totally comprehensive resource tool, close to 800 pages, it's written in a no nonsense, straight to the point style. How rare is that these days ? I found it concise, well written, with great illustrations and literally hundreds of useful tips and workarounds. It's also got plenty of "how-tos", and covers every aspect of the program in detail (including VBA scripts) in very easy-to-grasp terms. Also included are a complete shortcuts guide, downloadable web resource files, and invaluable hidden program functionality.

A huge bonus for me was that it covers both the Mac & PC releases - yeah ! I also found the sections on Text, 3D, and Animations particularly helpful.

Coreldraw is a great program and this is a great book - total quality from start to finish !

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book!.......2003-08-26

After upgrading from an earlier version of CorelDRAW, I needed to get up to speed quickly. This book is an excellent way to learn and excel at using version 11. The step sequences expose you to beginner and advanced level drawing, the tutorials are easy-to-follow, and there's an abundance of helpful and useful tips. Even if you're an experienced illustrator, you'll find great techniques in this book. Trust me you won't regret the purchase.

In CorelDraw 9 for Dummies, Deke McClelland shows you how the latest version of CorelDraw works while at the same time discussing drawing and graphic design as they apply to a computer-aided environment.

This book begins with a quick orientation to the CorelDraw user interface and--with the help of the clip art library--a tutorial on CorelDraw's tools for manipulating existing images. This tutorial covers zooming, layers, groups, and elementary file operations.

McClelland turns his attention to creating original artwork with CorelDraw, documenting the software's remaining tools in the process. He covers simple shapes and free-form lines, as well as colors, color gradients, clones, and all sorts of transformations. To demonstrate the tools, he employs an easily drawn, goofy-looking frog.

CorelDraw gets plenty of use as a text styler, so CorelDraw 9 for Dummies includes ample information on cool text tricks, including advanced typography, path fitting, and distortions.

Before wrapping up with coverage of raster editing using Corel PhotoPaint, the author elaborates on CorelDraw as a desktop publishing program. During the discussion, he creates master pages and enlists tiling as a means of printing large drawings on multiple pages. McClelland also reveals CorelDraw's ability to export drawings in Web-compatible formats. --David Wall

4 out of 5 stars Good, simple book.......2000-12-01

This is a really good intro to CorelDRAW 9, as long as you're not after detail or advanced functionality. Want to know how to draw a circle, manipulate text and colours with no previous experience? This is the book for you. Want to know more about Pantone colours? Forget it.

I bought it to get a quick start in CorelDRAW before moving onto advanced stuff, and it's a great book for that. A couple of minor points - I hate the stupid jokes. And there are no colour pages (which would be great in a graphics book - even if it is "for Dummies"). On the whole, though, highly recommended.

When I got this book, I was totally overwhelmed. It's only 1400 pages. I am new to Corel but this book brought me up to speed quickly. Just the CD ROM that is included with this book is worth the price alone. Alot of the book is still a mystery to me. The only problem with Corel is that when you start doing graphics you soon find out that there are no limitations to what you can do. Is this good or bad? If you can't make a choice of beautiful graphics, you are in for long nights fretting and many hours of wringing your hands. I rate this book from beginner to advanced. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding knowledge of Subject and Superb teaching skills!.......1999-07-27

Foster's CD9 book is an example of what can be accomplished by a "first rate" teacher who is second to none in thoroughly knowing his subject matter. Although CD9 is not a simple graphics program Foster and Pete have the graphics and teaching skills to make it a book I would recommend to anyone interested in the field of graphics ..beginner or otherwise. They took "No" shortcuts where quality is concerned. I read there cd8 book and yet still find there cd9 book worth every cent I paid for it. It covers not only how to use every tool but equally important what you "can do with the tool" artistically. In summary Pete and Foster want you to enjoy the program and they use every resource available in there book to accomplish this....And I believe they have succeeded!
