5 out of 5 stars Great Referance Guide.......2007-05-13

This book does a great job of reviewing what you should already know like the basics of networking and teaching you things you don't know like sub-netting. A great tool for any network professional.

2 out of 5 stars Plentiful errors.......2007-03-08

Too many errors in the book, it can cause more frustration and confusion than it is worth.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand.......2007-01-10

I found this book very helpful and easy to understand.

3 out of 5 stars Review for Dummies.......2006-08-26

I have not had the opportunity to use this textbook as of yet, but I have seen of it, it looks Very Good.

2 out of 5 stars Not geared for the CCNA exam.......2006-04-24

This book is good as a primer if you want consider achieving a CCNA. This book is not good as a study guide for the exam, due to its lack of granularity on most CCNA subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent companion.......2007-08-28

I found the book to be an excellent companion to the All-in-One by Shon Harris. Great for review of knowledge, or as a springboard into the material covered by the CBK.

5 out of 5 stars A must for initial review.......2007-07-11

This book is a must for initial review. It covers all 10 areas of what needs to be studied in a clear and easy to understand way. It is not, however, detail enough to get you pass the test. You need something more detailed and more sample test questions.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book First.......2006-12-20

CISSP -- Certified Information Systems Security Professional

After reading this book you can't be considered a Dummy any more. Nor, however, do I think you'll be ready to call yourself a Professional.

The real strength of this book is that is is so simple, so well written, so complete in its subject coverage that giving it a quick read will give you the overall view of where you want to be when you are ready to call yourself a Professional. This book is also quite inexpensive when compared with some of the other exam preparation guides, and especially when compared to some of the classes offered either in person or on CD.

The book is organized about like you would expect with a separate chapter on each of the ten domains that are covered on the exam. There are a number of other useful security certifications such as those put out by Check Point, Cisco and others. He covers each of these to the point of at least letting you know what they are, i.e. the Check Point certifications cover the use of the Check Point Firewall products. The book is supplied with a CD that includes additional sample testing and other materials.

Recommendation: Read this book first for an overall view, then study one of the harder books.

3 out of 5 stars A good first read, but you risk a false sense of security.......2006-03-05

I just recieved word last week I passed my CISSP exam, and I used this book among others to study for it. Let me give you a little background: I've been in IT for 10 years, starting as phone support, and moved on to desktop support, LAN administration, Exchange administrator, and eventually became my company's ISSO, then moved on to become an Information Assurance (Security) Engineer on one of our larger programs. Consequently, I had real world experience in many of the domains already.

Despite this, I think if I had only read this book, I would have failed the test. It is an excellent starter, since you can sit down and read it cover to cover in a day (plenty of white space, large font etc.) and you will get a good outline of the ten domains. But it just doesn't go into enough detail to keep you from getting tripped up on the test. A Section that is particularly lacking is cryptography. I don't think a single question on the test would have been answered from the knowlege I gained in that section.

The CD-Rom practice test is also too easy. I finished the book, took the 260 question test immediately afterwards, and scored ~95%. I then went online to the cccure.org website quizzer (which I highly recommend) and scored a 65% on their test!

Bottom line, if some one else has it, borrow it for your first read, it won't hurt and is a good way to get started, just don't stop there!

A book I highly reccomend is the CISSP prep guide by Krutz

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047126802X/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_6/103-8873493-6496642?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

The advanced questions at the end of each chapter are excellent. Remember, (ISC)2 jealously guards the actual test questions, and changes them all the time, so brain dumps are a waste in my humble opinion, but this book closely matches the conceptual depth and breadth you need to be confident of passing the exam.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing is wrong with the book - just not enough.......2006-02-10

I sat for and passed the CISSP test in January 2006. I used the following resources to help in passing the CISSP:

Shon Harris - All-in-One - 3rd Edition - 30%
Official ISC Guide to the CISSP Exam - 15%
Kurtz - CISSP Prep Guide - Gold Edition - 10%
CISSP for Dummies - 5%
Cccure.org - 25%
Other resources - 15%

"CISSP for Dummies" by Miller is a decent tool at preparing for the exam. I had thought this book would be a great cram book (if possible for the CISSP), where the `core' topics would be documented. After referencing the book, I do not feel this to be true and stopped referring to the book after the first few chapters. I did not find any typos or editorial mistakes, so while I do not think the book is necessarily wrong, I just do not feel it is nearly enough to pass the CISSP. Everything found in "CISSP for Dummies" can be found in other books/material. Please see my other reviews to see how I rated other books that I used to help pass the CISSP.

I give this book 3 pings out of 5:

3 out of 5 stars Security+ for Dummies.......2007-06-08

This book delivers exactly what the title promises. Unfortunately, I now realize that I need something written at a higher level. If you want the basics, buy this book, if you want to pass the Security+ certification exam, you need something more.

3 out of 5 stars One of the better dummies books.......2005-10-05

This is the only book I used to study for the Security+ exam. It covered all of the exam topics and provided enough information to answer about 70% of the questions. Even if you aren't trying to pass the exam, the information is organized very well and gives you a good working knowlege of the real world. To answer the other 30% of the questions, I had to use other resources. This book is not a substitute for TestKing or Actualtests.com if you just want to pass the exam. I give this book 3 stars for passing the exam, but 4 stars if you really want to understand computer security.

3 out of 5 stars A great place to start.......2004-07-15

This book does a good job of introducing the reader to many of the concepts covered in the CCNP cert exams. If you need a straightforward, plain-language primer on routing protocols, spanning tree, connection options, and support, this is a great book. Unfortunately, it usefulness is limited for some of the details on the 642 series of tests. I *would* recommend this book as part of a layered studying approach to the exams. Additional resources will be more clear after reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough to pass CCNP.......2003-04-29

This book is more useful for final revision for the CCNP. It does not cover any topic in enough detail to give you the depth of understanding you need for the CCNP. The CD that comes with the book is TERRIBLE. It has errors, missing portions and shows that it was rushed out without any proper quality checking. In short, stick to the Cisco Press books for CCNP information.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME STUDY GUIDE.......2004-04-15

I just passed this exam, and I must say this book was very well written. Everything on the exam was on this book. I was a bit cautious at first, buying a book with a "Dummies" title. But im glad I purchased the book. I passed the exam with a 90% finding all the sample questions just like the actual test questions. Highly Recommended!!!

4 out of 5 stars Web designer + this book = passing score (87%).......2003-10-14

I'm a self-taught web designer/developer/programmer -- I have too many titles, I guess. I've been developing websites and multimedia for 5 years, and this was the first time I took to get a certification (cheap employer wouldn't ante up for training). ...

I read this book in about 3-4 days combined time and learned quite a bit about things I already new a little about with regards to networking fundamentals (part III of the book). I do a lot of default technical support in my office as the computer nerd, but this section really helped explain some things that I'd never really taken time to learn about networking.

The HTML fundamentals section (part II) is the easiest section to get through, regardless of experience. It's also the least important of the 3 sections in the certification exam. Don't speed loads of time on this section.

The Internet fundamentals (part I) section was pretty decent, and it highlighted a lot of the networking information you'll learn in the third portion of the book. This section was most annoying because I learned that the people who run the CIW certifications have some really weird ways of referring to things (the chapter on domains and URLs was a little wonky because of THEIR terminology).

The author takes a lighthearted approach to the topics and inserts the occasional funny here and there that makes the reading go by quicker. I was disappointed that some of the helpful websites were no longer up and running (it's an old edition by Internet standards), and the CD-ROM testing application was so-so.

Specifically, in regards to the CD-ROM testing, some answers which were right were counted as wrong, there was no set time limit on the testing engine, and the testing engine basically mixed and matched (with some repetition) 298 questions from the three areas of the exam. Thankfully, the questions were close enough to those at my testing center that I felt confident I was on the right track while taking the exam.

For these reasons, I gave the book a 4 rating and would recommend it to anyone wanting the basics for sorting out the CIW Foundations certification lingo in order to pass successfully. I think I'd have gotten a slightly better score if I'd read a second book and/or spent more time on the networking fundamentals.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Internet overview.......2003-09-09

An excellent overview for all aspects of the internet, networking etc. A great book even if you are not going for the Foundations Exam.

Windows NT Server 4 can be the core of your small-office network, securely facilitating collaboration and resource sharing. Perhaps best of all, NT Server does pretty much everything within the familiar Windows interface. But Windows NT's blessing is also its curse. All that networking capability means that you, the user, have to learn a whole new set of information. Aimed at small businesses that can't afford a full-time Windows NT technician, Windows NT Server 4 for Dummies digs through the jargon and reveals how to plan, set up, and run a network of Windows computers.

This book begins with a bit of theory, explaining what network topologies and protocols are and how various options compare. From there, Windows NT Server 4 for Dummies goes through the process of selecting and connecting the hardware (network interface cards, hubs and cabling) you need to run a network. After that, it's all about setting up Windows NT internally--configuring users and groups, setting up trusts, and managing backups and other security measures.

Author Ed Tittel, who writes a popular series of books that help people prepare for the NT-centric Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) exams, knows his stuff, as do his assistants. In fact, you could do worse than to use Windows NT Server 4 for Dummies as an MCSE study aid. Though it lacks practice questions and other features characteristic of MCSE books, this text covers many of the subjects you need to understand to pass those exams. --David Wall

4 out of 5 stars The Dummy MCSE series are great supplemental books!.......2000-04-16

Good book and great CD! I feel this book gives the reader a basic outline of Server 4.0. Couple the dummy MCSE series with the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer Core Requirements Training Kit and a few months of solid studying and you'll be an MCSE before you know it. So far I've passed Networking Essentials, Server 4.0 and Workstation 4.0 and I've only used the Dummy and Microsoft books. Plus, the Microsoft books come with 120 day evaluation copies of workstation and server 4.0. You can do all the labs and examples right on your home computer. I honestly believe that this is a surefire approach to passing these tests. Good Luck!

2 out of 5 stars A lot of errors in this book.......2000-03-21

First of all, do not buy this book if you are expecting to understand how to be a good NT administrator. This book is only good for passing an exam. Don't get me wrong, if you are only buying a book to prepare for an exam, this is an ok purchase. However, if you are wanting to be a good administrator and an MCSE, then you would assume that you don't need a dummies book anyway. This book has a lot of errors which only get worse when coupled with the extremely flawed "flash cards". My advice is to read braindumps as this is all you are paying for. If the content was deeper and the errors less, this would be a good book. I don't dislike the dummies series of books, but if you take one thing away from my post it should be this, always buy one other book as well - if you're buying the dummies. It will help account for the errors and lack of detail you receive when reading dummies.

5 out of 5 stars This book will get you over the hump of passing this exam.......1999-09-24

I have taken the NT Server 4.0 exam three times. The first two times that I took this exam with Microsoft Litature I was always one question (700 pts) from passing the exam. After reading this book and using the tips and examples really helped me to get over the hump of passing. I scored a 900 after reading this book. He has really good examples and questions in the book, and if you can consistanly pass the test examples on the CD, and in the book provided you will pass one of Microsofts hardest tests. Not to mention I only studied this book for one week before my exam.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Windows NT Server 4.......1999-07-25

I thought this was a very well written book covering Windows NT Server 4. It gives a very good coverage of the four critical areas: networking concepts, installation, administration and troubleshooting. This book has been a huge improvement over Ed Tittel's NT Networking for Dummies; which although I still felt was worth reading, it however gave no instructions on actually doing something with NT. This new book does! This book even covers secrets such as: advice on not to mix Microsoft & Novell's networking components (not to be confused with networking clients), working with FAT volumes, VGA mode boot-up (use of /sos), use of the 3 generic installation disks, creating a generic start-up disk and the use of WINNT, WINNT32 with /o and /ox. Strangely, I could not even find these tips in the book Windows NT Server 4.0 Secrets (800 pages).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2001-01-16

Unlike most of the other reviewers, I thought that this was an excellent book. The order of content was well laid out. There may have been a few silly mistakes(there are in most books), but an intelligent person could figure them out. I highly recommend this as your first book on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Give this book credit for beginners.......2000-11-22

This book is very good at explaining NT Server 4.0 but it is not what a professional should use. I used this and Exam Cram and passed the test with a 833. If you are new to NT this book is helpful but if you are knowledgeable of NT Server don't bother with it. The book puts terms into to simple terms for just about anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth The $10 Australian (US5) I Paid For It.......2000-07-24

The most average book I have ever seen. I don't know what I really expected as the MCSE is not a qualification for DUMMIES. Maybe apart from the rrors this book will make you pass the test but don't think that will help you get job because it has virtually nothing that would be helpful in the real world. Avoid this one like the plague.

2 out of 5 stars The Dummy book that was written by a Dummy!.......2000-04-09

I'll start by saying that I would recommend The msce books for dummies on networking essentials and the NT Workstation exams. I WOULD NOT recommend paying money for the MCSE NT Server 4.0 dummies book. This book is filled with errors, and inaccuracies. The short comings that I found are in the areas of troubleshooting, Managing resources, win95 admin utilities for NT, and Optimization. I would like to add that the dummies series of books are normally a very well written series that puts the facts in plain english (no techno-babble). This book fell well short of my expectations, if you don't want to spend a LOT OF MONEY taking THE Microsoft NT 4.0 SERVER exam more than once, I strongly suggest finding another study aid besides this book! I used the WINDOWS NT 4.0 MCSE STUDY GUIDE by Alan R. Carter ISBN 0764530879. This is a very well written, concise and easy to read book with lots of good hands on labs! I passed the 70-67 server test with some help from THIS book. Good luck.

1 out of 5 stars NT Server WRITTEN by Dummies.......2000-04-02

This book already has plenty of one-star reviews so I am just piling on here. But having just passed the exam (with a 933), I felt compelled to come here to warn other MCSE candidates to stay away from this book.

This book is not only full of inexcusable errors but it is poorly laid out as well. Many of the "practice" questions cover material that will never be asked in the actual exam. It is hard to believe that the so-called MCSE's who wrote this book would put their names to it. Fortunately I realized that this book was useless early on and I was able to pass the test easily using other study materials.

If you want to pass this exam, you are much better off with the excellent Exam Cram book and the infamous "Braindump" website (as well as your original course material).

I am normally a big fan of the "Dummies" books but this one was a big disappointment. The "Dummies" books excel at giving novices some rudimentary information about a given topic with a good dose of humor. But getting your MCSE is serious business and the "Dummies" people clearly are not up to the task As soon as I came home from passing my exam, I took this book and threw it in the recycle bin. A total waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars MCSA Light.......2004-04-29

Easy to read. Would make a great reference. Definately will NOT get you through the MCSA exams. The book questions and CD questions are NOTHING like the real questions MS throws at you. You will need other sources for realistic practice questions and to fill in the gaps left by this all-in-one.
Book Covers the required 70-210, 215, 218 exams AND Network+ and Server+ exams. However, for MCSA, the one MS elective has to be one MS course OR two CompTIA courses: the A+ exam and EITHER the Network+ OR the Server+ exams, so this book will not cut it for a single source as it implies. MIGHT work if you already are A+ certified.

5 out of 5 stars You've got to start somewhere!.......2004-01-04

This is an excellent "starter" guide. Although you will need other sources (and be careful where you spend you hard earned cash - do a good few searches here before you part with it!). The writing style is "light" but that does not detract from the information imparted. This book, a substantial text and the great value Exam Cram 2's for each subject and you are there. Don't skimp on the resources, after all your trying to build a career, arn't you?

3 out of 5 stars Well organized, but not enough detail.......2003-05-30

The way this book is organized would normally make it a great study tool. The book is divided up by the tests needed to get MCSA certified.
However, I found that the sections just don't go into enough detail. When I took some 3rd party paractice tests I was asked questions that pertained to material that wasn't covered by this book. Plus, the pratice quiz that's on the CD has some errors.
I would only reccomend this as a supplemental study guide.

5 out of 5 stars Super MCSA study tool.......2002-10-26

If you are like me, you already have your A+ certification and are looking to pursue the MCSA certifications, this book is definitely the book for you. Gilster and Simmons have created a book that summarizes the essential knowledge for the 5 tests you need to pass to achieve that goal. Each test is covered in its own separate "book" so that you don't have to separate the information from one test from all of the others. Not sure that you shouldn't also look at Gilster's and Simmon's more detailed books on each test, but for those needing a bit more information, the other books would be a good idea.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent study guide that is also an entertaining read.......2002-10-25

I have used books by Ron Gilster to successfully prepare for a number of certification exams in the past couple of years. I also have a couple of Curt Simmons' Windows guides as well and have found them to be very to the point and informative.

So, it was a real treat to find an MCSA study guide by these outstanding writers. It was even more of a treat to read. Each of the "books" in the book covers one of the Microsoft or CompTIA exams required to complete the MCSA certification.

Like all of Ron's and Curt's books, this one is informative, to the point, easy to read, and entertaining all at the same time - something that cannot be said for the other "all=-in-one" books available.

Plus I'm sure this book will serve as a valuable reference long after I'm certified.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not the latest version of the Cisco Test.......2006-03-12

I'm sure this was a pretty good book - but don't order it unless you want to study for the expired Cisco CCDA test. Their is some similarity but the tests are not the same!

5 out of 5 stars Made a great addition to my CCDA studies.......2003-04-13

Aside form some of the flubs mentioned by rob (which were occasionally annoying at most) I found this text to be a solid resource for test preparation. You need all "everything and the kitchen sink" texts (such as the Cisco Press DCN book), and a book like the Dummies book that focuses on the environment and high percentage areas. Bottom line: I got my certification and this book helped me a lot.

1 out of 5 stars CCDA written by Dummies.......2002-10-27

This book is bad, and I don't mean in a good way. The book is missing a lot of details, and if you have any knowledge the mistakes will jump out at you. For example, on page 44 it gives the OSI model (from 1-7) as Physical, Data Link, Transport, Network, Session, Presentation, Application. Then, it says make sure you know the correct order for the test. Why? The authors don't. On another question, the book says you should answer, "I don't know because you haven't taught me, yet." Try answering a question on the CCDA exam, as I don't know it's beyond the scope of the test. Also, the editor must have just used the spell check and not actually read the book. There are a lot of errors like "form" for "from" and "wit" for "with." You can figure out what they are trying to say, but it is annoying and makes you lose your focus on studying. I do not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Just the right level of detail.......2002-09-10

No frills, but this was just what I needed for that last minute review before the test. I have plenty of experience, but sometimes it's good to brush up on the technical details, and that's what this book provided with a minimal time investment. Much appreciated, Mr. Gilster and Mr. Dalan!

5 out of 5 stars Tough stuff, but I think I get it..........2002-04-13

I really like this book. It covers a lot of ground, but I never felt like I got lost. The material was direclty applicable to both the certification exam, though nothing is perfect. I also think it makes a good "general" networking reference.

Defintely a keeper!

4 out of 5 stars If you want to pass the test, read this........2006-07-09

This book is the antidote to boring or overwhelming text books. In actuality, you need to learn and memorize the same facts and figures but the author's style makes it much less of a chore. In addition, the included CD allows you to get comfortable with the taking of the certification test. The book and the CD allowed me to confidently and successfully pass my certification test.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it was written on and way overpriced........2006-06-02

The information in this book is worse than incomplete. The practice questions in the book and on the CD are nothing like those on the EXAM. There are many practice questions that are poorly worded, and have WRONG answers. There are also many questions with TYPO's. Example there was a question comparing DIMMS and RIMMS, but all the the answers referenced SIMMS. Stay away from this please!!!!

Jokes are not funny and if this book was written by an 30 year + IT professional... well frankly that is sad. He should have had to knowledge and resources to create a book that is accruately geared toward the exam. Like other for dummy books, this book was probably written by underpaid, barely expierenced kids, with a limited review process as to maximize publisher profits.

If you are taking this exam I suggest that you obtain study materials from Testking or Realexams. Stay away from this book, it will not help you pass. The information it concentrates on such as DMA/IRQ/BIOS settings/codes etc., can be found for free on the internet.

In retrospect, I would buy this book only if they didn't charge me, and shipped it for free. At least I have a coaster for my drinks at work.

    5 out of 5 stars A good stepping stone.......2004-10-19

A good starter book that will not go over your head!

    4 out of 5 stars Passed.......2003-12-16

This is a good book for whom it is intended for; networking dummies! I had no previous networking experience before taking the Net+, so this was a great introductory guide to the networking world. Emphasis on INTRODUCTORY! There is a lot that the book did not cover that is on the exam. The exam also expects one to know the information in much more detail than the book gives.

I recommend using not only the dummies book, but also the Cram Session Guide, transcenders, and Self-Test Software. Also, as I said with the A+ for Dummies review, a great study partner can be one's greatest resource!
