5 out of 5 stars Excellent review resource for written exam prep.......2007-06-12

Well written, covered v2 exam blueprint. Highly recommended as a review guide before taking exam. Included tests in cdrom is big plus. Used it and passed re-cert.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to advanced concepts.......2007-05-15

This book is an excellent introduction into advanced Routing & Switching concepts. I have just completed the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) examinations, and chose this book as the next logical step. I've already been very pleased with the decision.

The text is understandable and well written and can easily be studied from. I've started preparing for the CCIE and am working through the book as it is written, understanding and memorizing as I go (I also use the computer software "Supermemo").

One thing I will point out: the CCIE Written Exam Blueprint (available on Cisco's website) is changed to version 3.0 as of mid-June, 2007. This book is written for the previous version of the blueprint and doesn't include all aspects of IPv6. MPLS (another new topic for the CCIE Exam) is included in the appendix of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but lacking some detail.......2007-05-06

If you get your CCIE, you will be taking written exams for the rest of your career (I'm 12-year CCIE, I just passed my sixth written), so a study guide is a wise investment. This is a pretty good one - but even though its over a thousand pages long, it still lacks details in some areas.

Although it is common to buy some routing protocol books on top of these, that's not the areas that I found it to be weakest. Several protocols in the LAN section aren't discussed in sufficient detail, and the wireless sections look like they just got burned out and threw together something quickly. You had better plan on additional research on these topics.

The CD sample questions are sometimes helpful to point out weak areas, but don't expect to see many (or perhaps any) of them on the exam. The PDF version was extremely useful - not for reading but for searching. If I was looking for information on a protocol, I could search the PDF and find the page number, which matched the book. I always find books easier to read than PDFs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A woefully, inadequate "study guide" for Cisco's premier certification........2007-05-03

The CCIE Security Exam Certification Guide glosses over "topics" listed in the CCIE version 1 blueprint. Each section provides a high level view of a subject. This book is riddled with configuration errors and lacks depth. While not study guides, other books like Network Security Principles and Practices -- Saadat Malik, Network Security Architectures -- Sean Convery and Cisco Router Firewall Security -- Richard Deal were excellent, detailed and fun to learn from.

Benjamin's description of cryptography and related protocols is terrible and should be avoided. A study guide should list salient features of a technology, not just fillers that will confuse the reader. I found chapter 4 (Security protocols) weak and skipped reading this chapter all together, preferring other, *better* tomes - Malik for example. Examples - The ESP Frame Format figure is incorrect. In the IPSec section, Benjamin writes "You can tunnel any form of data across the IPSec tunnel, such as IP, Novel IPX, or AppleTalk." Not without GRE to first encapsulate the non-IP traffic. IPSec works only on IP traffic and non-IP traffic should be encapsulated (recommended GRE encapsulation) prior to IPSec.

In chapter 5, Security Applications, Benjamin writes the following on VPN Concentrators "Cisco makes a number of recommendations in its SAFE Blueprint, but in general requires that the VPN Concentrator be located behind a Cisco PIX Firewall on the inside interface where the DMZ is located. The Cisco SAFE Blueprint has a number of recommendations based on network size and appliances, though". The SAFE blueprint does not recommend having a VPN device beyond a Firewall. Common sense would dictate that having this scenario would require opening up the Pix for all encrypted traffic.

I truly hope that Benjamin would write a far better book for the CCIE v2.0 blueprint.

3 out of 5 stars A good global view to exam.......2006-07-28

It's a good book with most of all topics to someone make the CCIE Security written exam, but not so deep.

2 out of 5 stars Puddle depth? That's one way of putting it..........2006-07-09

As another reviewer put it: puddle depth. As is not uncommon with most CCxx prep books, Benjamin's CCIE Security coverage is barely broad enough and nowhere deep enough. I'm using this more as a basic overview for a topic, then it's off to the Cisco documentation and lab work for a few hours to figure out how the thing really works.
Oh I wish for someone like Odom or Doyle/Carroll to write a CCIE Security book! It'd be two or three volumes, but it'd be worth the money, unlike "CCIE Security Exam Certification Guide". Buy it second hand, or better use Safari - at least you'll not waste a tree.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide for CCIE Security Written Exam.......2006-03-02

I obtained a copy of Henry Benjamin's "CCIE Security Exam Certification Guide" (ISBN 1587201356) to complete my final preparation for the CCIE Security Written Exam. Contrary to a few other reviews, I found this book to be extremely valuable for my final review. This book is exactly what it states in the title, a study guide for the exam. It is not a detailed analysis of security architectures and principles. It should not be viewed a CCIE Security "bible". Rather, this book should be used by a CCIE Security candidate only after he or she has read most of the other security related books listed on the CCIE Written Roadmap on Cisco's website.

I found the layout of the book to be beneficial for the CCIE Security candidate. Each chapter opens with a "Do I know this already?" quiz. The quizzes are helpful in assessing the reader's knowledge on the chapter's topics. Therefore, the reader will be better prepared to focus on the areas where he or she may be weak. The chapters then jump right in to its particular topic, presenting the material in a concise and articulate manner. The chapters close with a summary, questions and answers, and references to additional information. Finally, the book includes a testing engine as well as an electronic version of the book on CDROM.

I appreciated the "bonus" CCIE Security and Routing & Switching lab scenarios at the end of the book. A competent and confident Cisco engineer can never get enough hands-on practice lab scenarios to sharpen and keep ones skills fresh.

Again, I must emphasize that this book is a culmination of the CCIE Security candidate's exam preparation, not a starting point! If you are just starting your CCIE journey, I strongly recommend that you review the written exam blueprint on Cisco's website and begin with the Doyle, Malik, and De Laet and Gert Schauwers books, to quickly name a few. I am confident that this book assisted me in conquering the CCIE Security Written exam!

5 out of 5 stars Better buy this one quick as the exam is changing.......2006-03-02

I used to book to easily pass the exam and disagree with the comments made by some that the book is littered with errors, its written with Cisco blessings, by a ccie, reviewed by ccie's and the ccie program manager, no book is 100 % correct, sure there are typo's what makes a ccie candidate succeed is their ability to adapt to anything, complaining about typo's tell me you should be doing something else, even the ccie exam itself has typo's, this book hits the mark, what's is there is what you need to know, there are new updates at ciscopress.com that fix a few bugs in the cd rom, the questions on the cd are spot on especially the questions with figures, if you want to pass the security 2.0 before 3.0 comes out which will be harder from what I have heard internally you better hurry up, once you pass then use the lab sections to help with the lab, from a triple CCIE.

At first glance, The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible seems irreverent at best, but as the saying goes, "Judge not ... a book by its cover." This little addition to the Complete Idiot's series tackles one of the most intimidating and misrepresented subjects of the past 2,000 years and succeeds in producing a competent and thorough guide to the world's all-time bestseller.

Jim Bell and Stan Campbell's success is largely due to their humorous and conversational writing style, as well as candid snapshots of what's actually in the Bible. Their treatment of the Old Testament in particular is both an intriguing and hilarious ride through the drama of biblical history. With chapter headings like "Abraham: the not-so-accidental tourist" and "Tell-a-Vision Personalities (Isaiah Through Malachi)," the authors provide a memorable picture of the goings-on in the first 39 books of the Bible. The Abraham chapter includes, among other noteworthy (and entertaining) facts, how Israel became the Hebrew "Promised Land," the origin of the phrase "fire and brimstone," and some of the less illustrious deeds of the so-called "man of faith".

In addition to the movie-traileresque treatment of biblical content, the Idiot's Guide is supplemented with an extensive index, advice on buying a Bible, and a day-by-day plan for reading the Bible in a year. Whether you need a quick overview or are considering some in-depth study but don't know how to begin, The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible is a momentum-building first step. --Benjamin Gebhardt

Sex, love, adultery, scandal, betrayal, murder, cannibalism, and more! The Bible gots it all!! This handy little guide will help you to understand the Bible if this is your first time through or help you to a deeper understanding of the Bible if it's your 50th. I have been a Christian for 32 years and have studied the Bible for even longer and I found out some things I either overlooked, forgot or just missed out on. I highly recommend this to anyone who is serious about reading the Bible. I found myself looking up scripture after scripture to make sure they were right and guess what they are!

2 out of 5 stars Disppointed Expectations.......2007-04-13

I am a Christian who does quite a bit of Bible reading. The bible I mainly use has lots of interpretation remarks. I also have several other study guides.
I thought purchasing this particular book would have a very simplified explanation for some of the harder books of the Bible. Indeed it does, but at times I found some of the "the humor" to border on disrespect of this great book--meaning the Bible.
I would recommend it for people who are beginning their study of the Bible, or for someone who just wants an overview.
Perhaps it was my own mistake in purchasing this book, believing that I didn't have enough knowledge and/or resources already.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2006-07-03

Am preparing for an exam on the Old Testament. This was one of the recommended references. It is an excellent resource; easy to read and understand. The authors do not go into different theologys but present the work in a clear, concise, entertaining, and fascinating way. Although I am the one taking the exam, my spouse is enjoying the book as much as I am. Highly recommend!

3 out of 5 stars The Labs don't work!.......2005-11-12

I purchased this book to prepare Cisco's 642-521 certification exam on the PIX firewall. There is alot of useful information and the book is pretty thorough. However, I got a couple of PIX's and tried to go through all the labs which follow the chapters. Not everything is covered. Chapter 10 on Routing has no labs at all. Almost no lab works as written. Mostly there are small errors like using a hostname which has not been mapped to an IP address. Some are pretty extreme. For example, the labs in Chapter 16 try to connect servers on remote lans without setting up either routing or NAT. The also do nothing to allow the IPsec traffic through the firewall. There is an access list created for NAT in step 2 but it is never applied to anything. Missing from the solution are the statements:

nat (inside) 0 access-list nonat
sysopt connection permit-ipsec
route outside 10.0.2.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.1

It works once you add these commands, but they are also missing from the errata on the ciscopress web site. That includes several pages of corrections to the text without any corrections to the labs.

If the labs had worked, I would have given it five stars, but since they don't, it only gets three. This seems to be a common problem with Cisco Press. The extreme worst case is CCNP Practical Studies: Routing. That is a whole book of just routing labs but again, hardly any work as written.

4 out of 5 stars CCSP SELF-STUDY: Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced.......2004-03-11

Overall, this is a very good intermediate level text on Cisco firewalls. It is not for the beginning networker. Having an understanding of topics such as VLANS, access lists, NAT, PAT, and routing protocols is a prerequisite, if one wants to utilize the text to its fullest potential. With this understanding, this book becomes a powerful reference on setting up a Cisco PIX firewall. It walks one through the necessary steps of configuring a firewall in various different networking environments. The scenarios provided in the text can be adapted for most small to medium-sized networks. As one continues reading, the level and depth of material gets progressively more difficult. This increased difficulty may appeal to the advanced networker. Topics in this category include VPNs, attack guards, and enterprise management will not make sense to the novice, but add value and depth to the text.

Simply put, this book is a good reference and study aide on the topic of PIX firewalls. It is worth reading, if you are interested in learning basic topics or even some advanced ones. What you get from this book totally depends on the amount of time and work you put into reading and/or studying the text. This book will remain on my shelf as a valuable reference as I could not find much to fault.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2004-02-18

I grabbed the book as I got in to a project where I needed to configure Failover PIX system. Given no prior experience with PIX, this book was very handy. However, I still had to consult Cisco website for useful and up-to-date information for PPTP, MPPE, etc.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good study guide.......2007-06-15

This book is full of practice questions. But, the book does nothing to prepare you to answer them. The barrons book has about 20 pages of information about each topic (supervision, patrol, community policing etc) and then asks questions based on what you read. This book skips the information and jumps right to the questions. Not recommended for learning.

The barrons book helps is much better at helping you learn and retain information.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly Recommend for Cisco CSIDS Exam 642-531.......2005-04-26

The Cisco Press "CCSP Self-Study: Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System" is the Cisco Authorized self study book for the CSIDS Exam 642-531 (ISBN: 1587051443). The book is an excellent resource for any individual pursuing the CCSP track. In fact, I used this as my primary training material to pass the CSIDS Exam 642-531 to compliment my CSIDS web-based training.

The book format follows the CSIDS training course. However, the book provides far greater detail than the tradition Cisco courseware. The book follows the standard format similar to the majority of the Cisco Press Authorized self study books. Part I reviews the basics of Network Security; if you already passed some of the other CCSP exams, such as the PIX or SECUR exam, you can probably breeze through this section. Part II begins the deep dive into the CIDS environment, reviewing IDS concepts, Cisco's IDS architecture, and the various Cisco IDS platforms. The third section of the book delves into IDS configuration. Not only does the book provide detailed information on configuring the IDS sensor and modules, but also the various switch configuration requirements and the differences between IOS and Catalyst OS. The remaining sections cover CIDS maintenance and management.

Cisco Press provides numerous screenshots and configuration examples throughout the book. For those CCSP candidates who can not afford to invest in a 4200 IDS Sensor, a Layer 2/3 Switch, and CiscoWorks VMS, the diagrams, tables, configuration examples, and screen shots are very helpful in grasping the concepts and configuration requirements.

Where the book truly excels is in its coverage of both the IDS signatures as well as using the IDS Management Console (a component of CiscoWorks VMS). Fifty pages are dedicated to the IDS signatures. Admittedly, my eyes got a bit heavy reading this chapter. However, understanding the IDS signature architecture is paramount for any Network Admin. The coverage of the IDS MC was also fantastic. After completing the book, I felt confident in my abilities to utilize not only the IDS MC, and also the Security Monitor component of VMS.

The only instance where the book seemed lacking was coverage of the IDS Network Module for the Cisco Routers. However, in defense of Cisco Press, it is nearly impossible for a Cisco book to remain 100% up-to-date on Cisco latest hardware and software releases. The book does provide some content on the Cisco Secure Agent (CSA). Any CCSP candidate should always check www.cisco.com for the latest exam requirements and augment study material with the latest hardware and software releases from Cisco's website. All in all, I strongly recommend the Cisco Press "CCSP Self-Study: Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System" for Cisco CSIDS 642-531 exam preparation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent companion and guide.......2004-04-09

I read this book over 4-6 weeks and must say its one of the best technical reads I have come across, the level of accuracy if 100 % and there are few errors even worth mentioning, it has loads of quality examples and the flow is brilliant, I don't keep many of my books but I will keep this one, highly recommended for all security engineers. Thanks Ciscopress for publishing a really high standard security manual AWESOME.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend for Cisco CSVPN Exam 642-511.......2005-06-27

The Cisco Press "CCSP Self-Study: Cisco Secure Virtual Private Networks" is the Cisco Authorized self study book for the CSVPN Exam 642-511 (ISBN: 1587051451). I personally used this book as my primary study resource for the CSVPN Exam, which I passed with flying colors (934/1000), thanks in most part to this book.

The book format mirrors the CSVPN class format. The first chapter is nearly identical to all the other CCSP courses, discussing the general principles of network security, including types of threats and attacks. The opening chapter also reviews the fundamentals of VPNs and IPSec, which should be a review for those readers who have already passed the SECUR exam.

Chapter 2 jumps right in the meat of the course material, with an introduction to the 3000 Series VPN Concentrators. Subsequent chapters walk the reader through setting up the VPN Concentrators, from Quick Configuration mode, through complex configuration scenarios using Preshared Keys, Digital Certificates, Load Balancing, and Redundancy. Additional topics also cover the 3002 Hardware Client as well as the Cisco VPN Software Client.

The book does a terrific job presenting the material. Each chapter includes numerous screen shots relating to that chapter's specific topic. In fact, I was able to replicate many of the example configurations in my home lab.

The book obviously does not cover the latest Concentrator Release 4.7. While it is probably too soon to expect Cisco to begin testing the new 4.7 features (such as SSL VPNs), the student is advised to check www.cisco.com for the latest exam roadmap. As mentioned earlier, I highly recommend this book for any student preparing for the CSVPN Exam 642-511. Every question that I encountered in the exam was covered in "CCSP Self-Study: Cisco Secure Virtual Private Networks". When Cisco does begin testing 4.7 features, the student should be able to easily augment this text with additional information from [...].

3 out of 5 stars Good intro but lacks detail.......2004-09-23

I bought this book because when I started my new job, I inherited two cisco vpn concentrators. After working with the concentrators for several months and had a good handle on how to create new L2L vpn's, remote access groups, etc., I bought this book. I was looking for a good detailed book that would explained the individual settings within vpn's, groups, etc. This book was not it. It does a good job of covering the concentrator at a 30k ft level, but it lacked the detail that would be useful in a production environment. This may be a sufficient book to pass the exam (I wouldn't know since I've never attempted the exam), but did not meet my expectations as a "go to" book for explaining the details. So if you're looking for a book to explain the basics for exam prep, then I would give this 4.5 stars, but as a reference source, I can only give it 3 stars. I think this book is marketed as a good exam guide and not a "nuts-n-bolts" book, so I think I may have had wrong expectations for this book.

4 out of 5 stars Well written book.......2004-07-07

Having passed Cisco Exam 642-511 this morning with a score of 878, I would defiantly recommend this book. However, this book alone will not guarantee you a pass, the book is well written but does not cover all the exam topics, there a few questions on my exam which were not covered in this guide. I have given this book an overall rating of 4 stars and with the use of Cisco on-line documentation you should be able to gain enough knowledge the exam.

It's a tough market these days for network consultants, but the one commodity there's lots of is fear. There's loads of stuff to be scared of. Which means that canny network experts can get some work by offering to protect computer networks from unauthorized access. It's best to earn a certification before you go touting yourself for work, though. Cisco Systems' Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA) rating is a good vendor-specific one, and is sure to help get you in the door for security work at places with lots of Cisco equipment. CCSP Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced Exam Certification Guide brings you up to speed on the PIX firewall line, with emphasis on the coverage of the CSPFA exam.

Like the other books in the Cisco Press certification line, this one reads like an instructor's lecture, albeit frequently supplemented by reference material (command documentation, for example). The authors begin with material that should be familiar to a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or anyone else with basic network grounding, and build from there into the more specialized areas of VPNs, NAT, and access-control lists as they pertain to PIX environments. As always, you'll learn more if you have a testbed PIX firewall on which to try the procedures that appear in the text (the companion CD-ROM holds no simulator, only a quiz program), but this book gives test candidate a great base from which to work. --David Wall

Topics covered: The stated objectives of the two CSPFA exams, one of which candidates must pass in order to earn the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA) certification. The two exams are 9E0-111 (soon to be retired) and 642-521. Coverage includes PIX firewall installation and configuration, as well as techniques for adding such services as remote access management, virtual private networks (VPNs), network address translation (NAT, and accounting features.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This book was worthless..........2005-04-21

Just took the exam and passed - barely. If I hadn't taken the actual Cisco training class I would have failed and this book would have been the prime reason. The exam was MUCH more in depth on a NUMBER of areas that the book did not even being to go deeper then about a paragraph into, if at all. This book was poorly written, difficult to use, the examples were horrible and it CERTAINLY WAS NO USE FOR EXAM PREP - DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

The Pix FOS is already pretty unfriendly (compared to IOS) and a book that didn't just show you the help output and then break the option into tables (which looked lifted from CCO) would have been a big help - you know, something with actual explanations of how things are configured an such. This book was nowhere near this and a real disappointment, especially since it's a "Cisco Press" book. What the book turned out to be is was a hack job that was poorly put together, inaccurate, and useless for exam prep - which is horrible since it is marketed as a CCSP "self study guide." There were even examples that were wrong within the book.

BEWARE.

-Calvin

1 out of 5 stars Fair at best, very poor practice exam.......2004-04-12

The study guide is only moderately valuable, and sometimes confusing. Worse, the practice exam is sometimes blatantly incorrect.

Example: What kind of protocol is easiest to spoof?
Possible answers: UDP, TCP, ICMP, All protocols, or DNS
The "correct" answer is "TCP is the more difficult to spoof..."

I've found a few other errors, making the practice test virtually useless. In the example, the given answer is correct for a different question. In some cases, the answer is actually wrong for the question.

I'm disappointed that an "official" study guide from Cisco Press has so many issues.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2004-03-05

I can't add much to the comments already posted here, except to support the view that this book is a waste of time and money. It will NOT help you pass the exam. Even if it covered all the material (in my estimation, it omits ~20% of the required curriculum), it still simply copies or paraphrases the (free) Cisco Configuration and Command Reference guides.

At best it's a waste of money, at worst it will give you a false sense of what is required for the exam.

2 out of 5 stars Incomplete and Replete with Errors.......2004-02-17

The previous reviewer's comment that it's better than nothing is pretty accurate. The book is not organized with the exam objectives in mind, and it appears to have undergone no quality control checks whatsoever. To call some of these mistakes typographical errors is graciously optimistic.

Even the accompanying practice exam was flawed. About 10 minutes into it I got a question whose "correct" answer logically contradicted the parameters of question itself. I'll never know how good or bad the remainder of the exam was, because I immediately uninstalled the program in disgust.

My biggest complaint, however, is that too much material covered on the exam is missing from the book. Sure, the book will get you throught he basics of setting up a PIX firewall, but topics such as the Firewall Services Module, the CiscoWorks Firewall Management Console, and the Auto Update Server are conspicuously absent. And these topics were prevalent on the exam.

With that said, I did pass the exam on the first attempt. But it was thanks to some of the other practice exams and source materials that I was able to make up for the deficiencies and errors in this book. Had I taken this book as gospel, I have no doubt that I would have failed.

I need these study guide books to get me through the CCSP certification, but I am certainly going to avoid anything else by these two authors if possible. Frankly, I'm not sure they understand how some of these technologies (e.g., VPN protocols) really work. They certainly haven't explained them well to me.

2 out of 5 stars Fair Reference... Poor Study Guide.......2004-01-19

CCSP Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced - Exam Certification Guide by: Greg Bastien and Christian Abera Degu is a good source for anyone that is interested in setting up and configuring a Cisco PIX. I found page after page of useful information without all the unnecessary filler introduced by other authors.

If you have no experience with a Cisco PIX this book is a good start. It can help you select the proper model for your needs. Each model has different features that may or may not be important to your use. The differences are outline in a model by model summary followed by a complete comparison chart of the all the models.

Once you select your model you will need the basics to get going. The authors do a great job of covering the commands that you will need to get started. Examples highlight the usage, which helps when there are multiple arguments available for a single command.

As you progress through the book the subject matter increases in complexity, but the authors keep you informed. Cicso has built in the power to their operating system, but unleashing that power needs some explaining. The advanced commands are helpful since there are times when difficult configurations push us to the test. Having the insight to the power and proper use of certain commands and configurations help us overcome these obstacles.

I was impressed with the scenarios provided in the end. I like the way that the authors challenged me with their configurations and tested my skill and understanding. Their explanations have helped me to reconsider and change my configuration and setup to provide for a more secure network, which is something that we all need these days.

On the book's negative side I found quite a few errors in spelling and grammar. It seems to have been poorly proofread. I found the word "network" spelled "netowrk." How does that get by? My spellchecker corrected it for me, but somehow this made it passed the spellchecker used by the authors and was not caught by the proofreaders.

There are a few sections where I found some copy and paste errors. For example in the section regarding the Cisco 520, the body text reads "Cisco 515" in error. This leads to some confusion if you are not alert. It could easily lead you to believe the Cisco 515 can function the same as a Cisco 520, which is not always the case.

Another annoyance is the fact that some of the figures in the book do not use the same IP scheme as what is written in the text. It is as if the scenario or configuration was written and the figure was not updated to correspond, or vise versa. This makes it a little hard to follow along. I found it easier to correct the figure with a pen then to change the text.

Overall I feel that the book is a good reference guide, but does not make the cut for a study guide. There are too many errors that are distractions while studying. I should not need to hold a pen in my hand as I read along to make corrections. That is the job of proofreading.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK -Briefer than Shon Harris Book.......2007-06-14

This book is adequate to pass the CISSP exam --I did, and only like 600 pages to read. I also go the Shon Harris book, but it is tooo loong-- like 1000 pages, and too detailed. I also got the Official ISC2 book to hear it from 'the horse's mouth'. All 3 have CD ROMs with questions. This book is a bit dated now, Shon's book was re-released in late 2006.

You want to try to really pass the CISSP the first time. Good Luck!!

2 out of 5 stars No Errata Available.......2007-02-27

The author mentions an Errata for corrections to this book. You would think that a book published in 2004 that the author clearly stated various errors would be available at the Sybex site - where it belongs. Unfortunately, no such errata exists and I highly doubt it will ever exist. I also noticed some errors, not enough to worry me though.

The book is a reasonable early read to familiarize yourself with the CISSP exam content. The questions are not up to typical Sybex Certification Book standards - just not well written. Sybex Certification books are normally fantastic and very well edited.

I also read the Shon Harris All-in-One book. The Shon Harris book is extremely well written and has an unbelievable number of really well thought out CISSP questions to practice on. The text in her book is superb - well worth reading the whole book. If I had to choose between the two books - I strongly recommend purchasing the Shon Harris book instead of this book.

If the author can provide a URL for the current errata - please do so for those persons that did purchase your book instead of knocking the critics.

5 out of 5 stars Great overall book, concise and relavent information provided.......2006-07-25

I took this book out from the Air Force Technical Library and found it to be extremely well-written, concise, and an excellent introduction to the field of computer security. When reading this book I felt that the author had an excellent understanding of the material presented and focused on the most important aspects of the subject matter. I have not taken the CISSP yet so I can not comment on how relevant the material is to the exam (as most people know the CISSP is mostly about work experience anyways - not something you learn from a book).

After reading this book I then read the Shon Harris CISSP book I can tell firsthand that this book (Stewart's) is of much better quality. The Shon Harris book shocked me at its lack of structure (many topics are covered multiple times and simple security/network fundamentals are repeated so much that I wanted to scream - literally), extremely simplistic and foolish examples, and very poor quality of writing. After reading both books I have much respect (professionally) for Stewart and very little for Harris.

As for the comments about typos - I did not notice any major typo in the book that took away from the presentation of the material. (So ICMP was misspelled once - who cares?) Overall I thought the quality was much better than the Harris CISSP book (which, itself, has loads of typos and incorrect quiz questions - don't get me started). Overall I would highly recommend this book to others looking to gain a firm understanding and grasp of computer security while preparing for the CISSP exam.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely poor: Author is busy defending himself.......2006-07-14

Everyone, avoid buying this book. There are many other books out there.

As you can see on this page, one of the authors of this book tried to justify having made errors by saying other books have errors too. He also openly admitted having made contextual errors (which is extremely embarrassing) after being pointed out by one of his customers, but the author blasted him away and made no apology about selling incorrect data due to his ignorance and stupidity.

2 out of 5 stars Good enough to pass the exam -- despite some typos.......2006-06-30

Overall, the book provides a good coverage of the exam material at a reasonable price and is easy to read, especially if compared to Harris book and the Official (ISC)2 Guide. At the same time, I noticed a few typos and inaccuracies, which was very unfortunate. That was why I gave it 2 stars instead of 4 that it deserves. At the end, it did the job, and I passed the exam, although, after reading this book, I reviwed a few CBK domains I was less familiar with in the Official (ISC)2 Guide. Unfortunately, none of the books I checked, including a more expensive Harris book and moreover, none of the cheap overviews like the Passport book, provides a 100% coverage of the material that is tested. Therefore, unless you have a real IT-related experience, you may be caught by surprise at the exam, no matter which book(s) you used. As for the typos, even the Official Guide has a few.
