Simple, Great Examples.......2005-08-18
The books is organized into small chapters with great example resumes and a list of key words. It allow you to improve you IT resume in a short amount of time and even have suggestion on where to start if you are new to IT.
The Best, don't look further.......2005-01-11
I read this book so fast, the way it was written was so interesting and easy, evey single question I had in mind was answered, nothing is left! I loved the book, unfortunately I cannot get the Ace the IT INTERVIEW book, because it is not available in my area, but I would definetly the interview book too! by the way there is a very good chapter about interview in this book!
four little things i hated about this book:
- much more of network than software development ! but it is ok coz most careers are in Network administration.
- in a resume there was: Modem Software!!, this is called Browser...!
- adding Norton AntiVirus in an IT resume is something stupid!
- PHP and C-Sharp: top programming lanuges not mentioned in the book!
In the market for an IT job? Get this book!.......2004-12-28
This book's objective is to land you an interview. Before reading this book I could only say I had 1 maybe 2 interviews total in a period of a few months. After reading this book and using some of its suggestions I have had several more.
Overall I'd rate it a 4.8 since I feel that Paula is a bit too forward with some of her suggestions (for example closing statements on cover letters that are a bit overboard imo).
But that's my only complaint =)
No matter your position in life be it a freshout of college or an experienced IT vet who's looking for something different, this book will pay for itself many times over.
Ace the IT Resume!.......2004-01-15
This book is excellent!!! If you think your resume is good, think again. Follow the steps in this book and you'll see a totally new person. I used it in conjunction with Ace the IT Job Interview and it got me a job.
Absolutely Horrifying!.......2003-11-24
I do not know where these women got their credentials, but they are WAY off the mark! DO NOT LIE ON YOUR RESUME! No matter what this book recommends! For instance, the authors state: "If your offical title is Tech Level I, you might be responsible for database administration, PC support, and webmaster duties. If you're hoping to move into DBA, list 'database administrator' as the job title and as the first bullet describe your responsibilities in this function." Wrong, wrong, wrong! As a hiring manager and interviewer, if I discover you lied about your job title, especially when you were a Tech I and you claimed to be a DBA, I will wonder what else you lied about. And believe me, I'll find out when I call your previous employers to verify your employment history. No, instead, when in this situation, downplay, emphasize the job title you want, and even omit your job titles, and use the opportunity to emphasize your skills. That way, even if you don't have the right job title, you can demonstrate to me that it doesn't matter. But NEVER, EVER lie or deliberately mislead anyone. Then they'll just feel like you were trying to trick them, which is NOT very impressive.

Awesome .......2007-01-14
a really good book for college undergrads and grads to get an insight into interviews from beginning to end.
must have for all students.
Very helpful.......2006-07-13
The book is very helpful for IT professionals seeking a job. Different positions in the IT field were discussed along with potential questions you might get asked during an interview. The author also provides advices that are critical to job hunting. I highly recommend this book.
Too Much Psychology, Not Enough Q&A.......2006-04-23
I thought this book would be filled with technical questions and answers to review before a technical interview. Was I ever wrong. Out of 6 parts (and part 6 is all appendices) the first four have no interview questions. They have to do with resume writing, networking, increasing your confidence, making a great first impression etc. etc. That leaves one part for technical questions and answers. Part 5 is what I thought I was paying for and consists of one chapter totaling just over 150 pages. Here's a sample question under the job category of Database Adminstrator: "What is a trigger? What is the most complex trigger you have written?" Answer: "A trigger is a common database element and you should be prepared to discuss how you've used this element in the past- for instance, to implement business rules. Try to be as specific as you can in your examples of the types of triggers you've created." That's the whole Q&A on triggers. Definitely not enough detail for me.
Excellent Reference.......2006-03-29
This is the best reference I've seen for IT interviews. I've seen many of these questions at interviews and at one it appeared they had pulled questions from the book. The technology specific questions are excellent.
What a great book........2006-03-04
Gives great advice on how to handle tough interview questions and helps you prepare mentally to present yourself. Really nice.

Customer Reviews:
Too basic.......2005-04-14
I gave a quick read of this. Not sure how to rate it. Motherhood and apple pie. Nothing earth shattering. Basics repeated. Prepare, dont loose cool, practise makes perfect. Now that's the secret sauce for a sucessful case interview according to the book.
Short and to the Point; Very Practical!.......2004-04-16
I came across WetFeet for the first time in MBA school -- they impressed me back then with their very practice and to the point approach! This book is no exception!
It is very short (100 pages) and well organized (Getting started; successful networking; the interview process; interviewing at your best; gettgin the best offer).
The book does not cover resume writing and cover letter writing, which I consider one of its strengths (so many other resources are available on the subject).
The real strength of the book is in it practical guidence to specific steps that can be taken in the interpersonal (netwroking, interviewing) aspects of a job search. Recommended read for all career activists!
Yes that's outdated!!.......2004-03-21
I am majorly disappointed with this book. I was really shopping around for Case In Point / Vault Guide to Case Interview, but since those books aren't carried by my local bookstore and I need that quickly, I end up choosing this as it has an electronic version. It's no good. FULL STOP. It's like a random summary of a MBA courses, Porter's five forces etc.. But I don't think this book is helping with dealing with case interview at all, rather it's confusing the candidate especially for those non-MBA students who didn't know about those infamous business framework. It's giving them a incomplete and useful illustrations. Disappointed...
Deconstructing the Case Interview.......2003-04-10
Definitely worth the money. I bought this one as well as Ace II (just heard there's now an Ace III), and used it to prepare for my consulting interviews. No matter what case got thrown at me, I kept my wits about me since i'd seen it all before while working through the WF guides. And now I'm going to work for one of my top picks in consulting. woohoo!
Very Helpful for Case Interviews.......2003-03-08
This guide provides some very useful case examples and takes some of the mystery out of case interviews! I would definitely recommend this!
Book Description
The inside track on how to beat the "logic puzzle" job interview
As if job interviews weren't nerve-wracking enough, many companies, in their pursuit of the brightest and best, have begun beleaguering applicants with tests of logic, creativity, and analytical abilities. Many firms have replaced traditional interview questions such as "Tell us about yourself" or "What's your biggest weakness?" with mind-benders such as:
- Why are beer cans tapered at both ends?
- How many piano tuners are there in the world?
- How many Ping-Pong balls can you stuff into a Boeing 747?
- How would you design a bathroom for the CEO of the company?
- If you could remove any one of the 50 U.S.states, which one would it be?
In How to Ace the Brain Teaser Interview, bestselling careers author John Kador gives readers the inside track on this new interview technique. He provides 75 puzzles actually used by HR departments across the nation, and he offers tips on how to solve them and present the solutions so as to make the best possible impression.
Download Description
Learn to solve the world's most puzzling interview questions Company recruiters are asking tough, new brain teasers during interviews that test your skills, creativity, and ability to think on your feet. How would you respond to puzzlers such as "What weighs more on the moon than on the earth?" or "How much money does the tooth fairy distribute worldwide each year?" In How to Ace the Brain Teaser Interview, bestselling career author John Kador presents a wide variety of questions, and shows you the type of responses interviewers want to hear. Inside you'll find: 151 brain teasers used by human resources departments across the country Suggestions for handling business cases Basic hints for solving logic and puzzle questions Proven strategies for finding creative answers every time Helpful appendices with bonus questions and extra resources "In the arms race between interviewers and interviewees, Kador gleefully furnishes job applicants with more ammunition."--Joel Spolsky, Founder, Fog Creek Software "This book helps you to grease up your mind a little so that when riddle questions come at you, you can respond intelligently, even if you don't know the answer."--Chris Sells "What weighs more on the moon than on earth? Kador not only tells us the answer to this brainteaser and many others, he explains how each question can launch an incisive interview conversation."--Ed Milano, VP of Marketing, Design Continuum "A must-have book for job seekers so that they will always be prepared for what may seem off-the-wall questions!"--Matt DeLuca, co-author of 201 Best Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions.
Customer Reviews:
Many Answers...Not Much Insight.......2005-09-20
From the title of this book, you might expect that it would teach you techniques for coping with brainteaser questions. For the most part, it won't. Instead, what you'll find is a large collection of puzzles and their answers - but very little discussion of the PROCESS of solving brainteasers. Unless your plan is to memorize the contents of this book, and hope that an interviewer's question matches one of your canned answers, you won't find much value here.
Much of what's in Kador's book can also be found here:
"How Would You Move Mount Fuji: Microsoft's Cult of the Puzzle" by William Poundstone
Specifically for software developer interviews, this is also helpful:
"Programming Interviews Exposed: Secrets to Landing Your Next Job" by John Mongan
Just a hint: Canned answers seldom fool capable interviewers. Your time would be better spent mastering the actual techniques of problem solving, rather than trying to memorize things.

Customer Reviews:
it's an unfair world.......2007-08-21
Life is unfair, and as the authors point out over and over, nothing is less fair and more subjective than a job interview. That said, this book can help first-timers avoid many obvious mistakes. It's a humorous, quick read by folks who have "been there, done that."
....disappointing.......2007-08-10
This book was not at all what I expected from 2 supposedly knowledeable professionals in the field. I learned 2 things that I did not already know out of the entire book, I was disappointed that I wasted my money, not only that, there was a reference to people in the hip hop industry not knowing how to act and I was personally insulted and very surprised that a better analogy and example could not have been used. I would never recommend this book to anyone.
Short and sweet........2007-07-16
The book is okay. Gets to the point and basically says this... "Doesn't matter who you are or what you know, if you're a good interviewer and they like you you'll get the job. Looks are more important than quality and knowledge." HR reps are the dumb gate keepers that feel they are god's in flesh on this earth but actually know nothing and you can't offend them in any way shape or form...
Yeah, a good quick read.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Guide.......2006-10-12
The CD served me as a wonderful guide for my first job-hunting experience.
It helped me develop a detailed image of the interview process and build confidence.
It also gave me the opportunity to review basic, yet important facts that peole tend to forget at the time of the interview.
WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-08-06
Do NOT waste your money on this CD! Most of the content was soft mediation simply telling you to visualize yourself as 'confident' in an interview... over and over and over. The rest of the 'inside tips' were so basic, it was no more than common sense (ie. don't be late for the interview).
A Great Reference.......2006-03-04
I was fortunate enough to see Mr. David Portney speak at a Career Fair in Los Angels. Mr. Portney is a dynamic speaker with great information and enthusiasm. At that time, I purchased his CD "The Secret of How to Ace Any Job Interview with Confidence". I have listened to it a number of times and have replayed certain chapters back as refreshers. It contains relevant information on the interview process and enables you to build your confidence. The section on building confidence and reducing nervousness is most helpful. There are many other tips included that can make your interview go smoothly. I highly recommend this CD to newbies and veterans alike.
A Must Have.......2006-02-28
Trust me when I say it is the little things we forget or worse assume we know when it comes to interviewing. This CD is a great asset to own whether you need to brush up on a few things or it is your first time entering the working world. I bought this for my son to help him when he decided he wanted to get a job. I have also had the pleasure of attending a class by David. The CD is just as great and informative as he is in person.
Interview Like a Pro!.......2006-02-27
This is a very useful program for building confidence - whether you're a first-time job hunter or an experienced pro! I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
No PeopleSoft questions in this book.......2004-04-24
No peoplesoft like the editorial review claims. Plus, this book has very little useful information about interviewing. It's just a bunch of technical questions organized by chapter. The Oracle questions are out of date, for version 8i which was released in 1999. Don't get this book for help on how to interview. Get "Ace the IT job interview". I am glad I only paid $3 for this. It is barely worth that.
Stay away from this book.......2003-01-05
I have a solid background in C/C++ and I was hoping to fill in some gaps in other areas with this book. Unfortunately, given the poor quaility of the C/C++ information (and the sometimes-silly stuff in the "how to interview" section), I really don't trust what's in the rest of the volume.
The C/C++ chapter is divided into "beginner", "intermediate", and "advanced" sections. Instead, they should be labeled "unbelievably trivial", "very trivial", and "trivial". Even worse, much of the information is presented in a misleading or incorrect fashion. I suppose this is to be expected, given that the main credentials of the person who wrote the C/C++ section are a music degree and the ability to play the string bass.
If I were giving an interview and I heard a candidate parroting the C/C++ answers in this book, I would promptly show him/her to the door.
Instead, get a copy of: "Programming Interviews Exposed" by Mongan and Suojanen.
Poor.......2002-10-22
This book suffers from poor editing, poor questions for VB, C++, Java and SQL. Many wrong and poor explanations and answers.
I have no idea about Mainframe, Cisco etc sections.
Only ASP section is worth reading with a comprehensive coverage of the topic.
I have never returned a book. This is the first one which I had to return.
Poor.......2002-10-22
This book [is bad]. Poor editing. Poor questions for VB, C++, Java and SQL. Many wrong and poor explanations and answers.
I have no idea about Mainframe, Cisco etc sections.
Only ASP section is worth reading with a comprehensive coverage of the topic.
Poor Editing.......2001-08-10
The book is filled with valuable information but you generally have to read the answers, and sometimes the questions, at least twice because the book is poorly written. It's as if nobody took the time to proofread - which is pretty sad for a FOURTH edition. Even the entries that are well thought out tend to be filled with sentence fragments and clauses, making it very difficult to read and more importantly, COMPREHEND! I'm no English professor but I can recognize when something can be written more clearly.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
I got the job! This is the best book I've read for interviewing........2006-07-15
Simply put, I got the job. I believe a significant part of it was from what I learned by reading Green's insightful book. Over 200 pages, it was packed with useful information like the four types of interviewers. It contains mnemonics and concrete exercises (in the form of fill in the blank worksheets and surveys) that help you get to know your own skills best so you can sell yourself well. Paul C. Green is a good writer and compounds his solid experience in HR and corporate psychology with delightful wit and meaningful anecdotes.
Moreover, my confidence soared since I was not so anxious about how I was being judged in interviews anymore. I knew I was giving a good representation of myself and I knew how to answer questions. I used to fumble when "gut feel" interviewers started off by skimming my resume, simply asking, "tell me about yourself." Now I knew exactly what to say and how to say it.
Green's book does not contain any canned lines that zing your interviewer, as there's no such easy gimmick like that. Rather, Green helps you hone your own personal approach to help interviewers see you for what you really are. You then rehearse your own specific behavioral-interview examples that demonstrate your merit. They'll know your skills and experience. In addition, Green helps you answer the "tough" questions and coaches you to manage the whole meeting, including body language and the interview small-talk. They'll feel confident hiring you.
The book was an easy read, too; I whizzed through this book in two days. If you get only one book, this is the one. I would also recommend getting books for writing resumes and cover letters specific to your industry. I had been trying to get the job as a high school math teacher for nearly two years, and now I've landed it. Get this book! Good luck and hang in there job seekers!
Get Hired.......2005-07-19
I found this book incredibly helpful in preparing for a recent job interview. It forced me to focus on what strengths I possess and wanted to highlight during the interview process. It also helped me understand the most important strengths/skills companies are looking for today - resilience and flexibility.
Great coach, book! Boosts your EQ+IQ........2001-06-23
I got this book to streamline my emotions, find the motivation, assume a positive spirit in my search for a new job. Helped much.
EQ. Emotional Quotient. The author is definitely a Ph.D. in Psychology. He is good. He makes it all sound natural, reasonable, approachable, doable. Provides motivation in simple human terms. Discusses fear, hopes, competition, courage, determination, anxiety, self-steem.
IQ. Intellectual Quotient. The book expands the scope and effectiveness of your analytic capacity applied to the job-search process. The book gives you a simple working methodology to visualize and analyze what is fundamental to find a job.
Whatever you do, before you start selling you to employers, do sell yourself the idea of buying a job, of finding a good job that you will enjoy at a company that will truly help you grow.
After reading this book I felt like finding a million jobs. LOL.
Max D
LOL. Laughing out loud.
Working proof of 'Get Hired'.......2001-03-27
I am a recent college grad who came across this book at the public library. I had spent the past four months unemployed so I decided to read this book to resuscitate my career-hunt. This book was a tremendous help. Dr. Green writes in a practical manner which is enjoyable to read. His strategies and advice are clearly applicable to an entire interview, including what to do after. I really enjoyed 'Get Hired' because of its effectiveness. Most interview books focus on the questions, but rather than chase after questions this book focuses on the source, the interviewer. By understanding the interviewer, we can understand what questions they are likely to ask, what they are looking for, and then how to answer the question. This strategy is very flexible in adapting to an interviewer, rather than solidifying in answering specific questions. Also, 'Get Hired' has a pratical, in-depth process for readers to write out our job and life experiences. I found this process so easy and enjoyable that by the time I finished I had a lot of well, developed experiences, some of which I had almost forgotten. With this multitude of clear, developed experiences it enables readers to answer any question while highlighting a benefit to the employer. Another, strategy of 'Get Hired' I really like is how readers are shown how to guide the interview and questions. This book teaches how to take questions and to direct them where we want them, which is towards our proven experiences. Also, it shows how to answer a question which will then lead to another desirable question. This strategy was so effective when I interviewed that I knew which question would be asked next by how I guided it. In fact, by studying this book and practicing it I did great on my next interview where I had five interviewers, two of them were participating through a phone conference. With each question I followed the strategies from 'Get Hired' and answered with a proven experience, while guiding the next question. The entire interview was right where I wanted it to be and through my answers I was able to keep it there. After the interview, my potential supervisor came up to me, shook my hand, and said, "If it was up to me, I'd hire you right now". I got hired to my current position. I am the youngest employee ever hired at this organization and I beat out over forty applicants, many of whom had more years of experience and education. But through my relevant experiences which were enhanced through 'Get Hired' I was proven the best candidate.
