5 out of 5 stars Great Practice.......2007-05-21

I used this book along with books with from Syngress (Security + Study Guide and DVD Training System), McGraw-Hill (Security+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide), and Sybex (CompTIA Security+ Study Guide: Exam SY0-101 (Hardcover))and passed the exam with a score of 780. This book contained 773 practice questions that more close to the actual exam than any other study guide. The bottom line is that the more practice questions you are exposed to, the better off you are going to be.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed opinions.......2007-02-08

Firstly, let me state it for anyone who is not familiar with exam cram books, this book is an abridged publication. It will not cut it as a primary learning tool in any respects. This in itself is a weakness, but generally with exam cram books this is expected.

With that in mind, I will try to give a fair rating to this book. I'll break it into two parts 1) Study guide & 2) test booklet

STUDY GUIDE -
A long time ago, I used an exam cram book to help me with the network+ exam. It did the job perfectly. The security+ test, however, is considered a mile wide and an inch deep. This little study guide simply doesn't have enough in it to cover ALL of the material (no book usually does, but the abridged format should've allowed it to), nor does it go enough into detail to sufficiently explain the topics it does cover the information. I know the book is abridged, but the subject matter is abridged to begin with. Instead of a "mile wide and an inch deep", this book is 3/4 of a mile wide and a half inch deep. To me, that doesn't make for a great source for even "cramming". I say this because the test involves actually understanding the materials rather than memorizing facts. I think it comes up short in this respect.

Question Book-
The book full of questions also gave some mixed results. It did a good job of providing unique questions for the entire subject matter of the test. I did not like how it announced what it was specifically asking a question about before it asked it. This happened A LOT. For instance before it started asking questions about "security policy", this is how it read:

4.5.2.1 SECURITY POLICY
Which of the following involves a broad policy set forth by management on how security should be handled?
a) Password policy
b) Security Policy
c) Procedures
d) Guidelines

You know exactly what the answer will be, long before finishing the question. It was even worse when this type of question was the ONLY question for the topic. That doesn't do you any good.

My second gripe was the accuracy of the answers. This was the third set of books I read on the subject, and some answers seemed to clash with what I read in the other books. Some parts did more to confuse me (due to the contradictory nature) than actually help me. Considering the other books I've read were Shon Harris' CISSP book and the security+ book by Greg White, I am going to have to guess that this was the book in error. Now don't get me wrong 90% of it was spot on accurate... so it did a decent job... but 5% was filled with "poor questions" where the questions were ambiguous, poorly worded or had grammar issues that were difficult to work through. An extra 5% were apparently wrong or contradictory to other information.

In conclusion, I'd say the books were moderately helpful in the end, but overall leave a lot to be desired. I would not rely on these books as the primary factor in passing the test. I think as a primary study guide you may want to use Security+ by gregory white, as well as CISSP all in one by Shon Harris (covers more material than needed for this test, but I'd say 80% overlaps with Security+). Whatever one book didn't cover, the other did. They are very accurate and thorough sources of information and are extremely good in helping people understand the material.

ABOUT THE TEST:

While people say that Security+ is an "entry level" security certification, people need to realize this isn't an entry level category. Security+ requires users to have a great deal of experience/knoweledge in the IT field, otherwise you probably will fail. I was very suprised when I started studying for this test. It covers a large spectrum of technology and applications and also goes enough into detail that you have to actually know and understand the technology and procedures involved. I have used this test as a steping stone for the CISSP (there is a LOT of overlapping), and I think it is well worth the effort.

Who needs to take this test? Well I'd reccommend it before taking the MCSE (it gives you credit towards a MCSE/MCSA requirement. It is also a great way to prepare towards a CISSP, the most accepted security certification. Really, it is like a more reasonable form of the CISSP being that it is widely available at testing centers and costs far less to take the test. I think this certification is dragged down because of the "easy" reputation of A+ and Network+, which truly are "entry level" tests. Anyone who wants to show security competence should take this test..

4 out of 5 stars It worked, I passed. I dont know how but I did........2007-01-04

I dont know if its the subject or the book but this was hard to follow. When I took the CompTIA test it didn't seam like the same material; however, I did pass. (I always do self tests untill I get 90% then take the $250 real test). If your new to IT security look into Cysco's CSIIP test. Its a more highly valued Certification. I didn't take the exam yet but I'm getting the notion from employeers that security+ is not worth the time. (Im entry-level w/ A+, N+, S+)

5 out of 5 stars What You Need to Pass the Test.......2006-12-01

This is not a book that is going to make you an expert on Security. Instead it is a book that prepares you to take the test.

The authors have studied the test,
they understand what the test makers consider important,
they have put together just the information that will be on the test,
they have created a series of practice questions which they then answer and explain their answers.

This is, of course, exactly what you need if you are just cramming to pass the exam. Even if you are experienced in computer security, there will be points in areas with which you are not familiar. This set of books makes sure that you cover all points that the test will cover.

This special package includes two books and and a CD. The two books are the book on the test, and a special Practice Questions book. The CD has 700+ questions, which are the same as in the book, so you have a choice in the way you want to study.

5 out of 5 stars A great Buy.......2006-10-10

I passed SYO-101 today with 813 points thanks to this book and MOST importantly the 800+ questions on CD included with the Practice Questions Book. It is a great deal and well worth the money if you are considering taking the Security +

4 out of 5 stars 1 Down and 1 To-Go.......2006-12-06

I took the Core test today and past it with a mid-600's score. I took some onlined practice tests, which really helped and I used these 2 books. I'd given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the inbetween stuff that you don't need for the test. It does give you alot of detail in history though.

I have been working on PCs for a few years now and it wasn't until recently that I decided to get certified.The test was easier that I though, I'd been craming and updating my skills for the past 3 weeks. The only things I had problems with were the CPU's and their slots. I'd recommend drilling those in. Some other items on my test were IRQs, PCMCIA Card types, and Printers. If you don't know basic wireless technologies, read up on them and know at least the basics. (ssid, types b and g, etc.), also cable types and connectors. Most of the questions were scenarios and there was lot of "...it could be either one" type of questions. All in all, if you have at least 1 year's experiance with computers and read up on at least 2 sources, you should have no problem passing this part of the test.

4 out of 5 stars Good preparation books.......2006-05-21

I used three books to prepare for both Hardware and OS certification exams - this set and A+ Complete Study Guide, Third Edition (220-301 and 220-302) by David Groth.

I used the same technique to prepare for the exams:

1. I read the Hardware chapters of David Groth's book, do all the tests;
2. I read the Hardware chapters Exam Cram 2 book;
3. I did all the tests in the Exam Cram 2 Practice questions book;
5. I did all the test on the PrepLogic CD;
6. Quickly review the Cram Sheet;
7. Take the exam.

Same for the OS exam.

Overall - the Exam Cram books are not easy to read and include some advanced topics not necessary for the exam. I believe that you can just skim through those sections and you still are going to be OK.

Many of the test questions in these books are exactly the same as those on the actual exam.

I have also reviewd the A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide by Michael Meyers and Scott Jernigan and found it useless.

2 out of 5 stars Book Too Big.......2006-03-16

This book is gigantic. It's full of "in between" information and is not suitable for an IT grad or someone with experience. The A+ is not a professional exam, its an entry level exam. I recommend the fast pass or something written by Mike Meyers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! - Good True-to-Life Questions!.......2006-03-14

This is a great book set. I havn't finished it yet, and from what I've read in the questions they do infact cover a good amount of the actual test content. Of course, not word-for-word but subject-wise, a lot of the questions are similar. While a lot of the content dealing with the A+ test is basicially garbage since computing today doesn't require knowledge of the IRQ of a floppy drive. In my opinion, this "Garbage Content" is a bad reflection upon CompTIA. Anyway, James Jones has made this book's information clear and concise to coincide with the test, and he has done a great job of it. James Jones A+, CompTIA C- (At best).

5 out of 5 stars Finally Passed! Great books!.......2006-01-03

The materials in this Study Kit is very detailed compared to some of the kits out there. There were one or two questions that had 3 answers when they state to "select two", and vice versa, but they were few. As long as you study and know your materials, you'll do great. The Exam Cram 2 book does make you understand technical materials by using other real world examples and a great sense of humor. Pay attention to the Alerts! The Practice Questions book bombards you with questions on given exam Domains, and that's great! Shows your weak areas to work on. You should not rely on just these Study Kit books. They didn't appear to have some information on Operating Systems that the A+ Complete Study Guide, Third Edition (220-301 and 220-302) book had, and it wasn't as well organized. Definitely get both sets of books. Where one lacks, the other one makes up for it. Thanks to using both set of books (this Study Kit and the above named book), I passed both A+ exams (220-301 and 220-302) with high marks on the first shot. Good luck on your exam(s).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent........2005-08-10

I passed the Network+ with flying colors using nothing but this book. My suggestion is to go through the book and create flashcards to use for your actual stuying. Pay careful attention to the DOS commands and the cable types. The practice tests are not really that helpful. But the book is wonderful...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Material, Excellent Value.......2005-04-23

I had concerns after reading that other review here but found Que had already beaten us to the punch by posting corrections at www.examcram2.com and MeasureUp has already posted fixes. 2/45 ain't bad, considering your average technical books have far more errors than that. Also, we're getting 750 practice questions in the test-question book for about $12 -- in the book AND on the CD, and I know for a fact you can't beat that pricing at Transcender or Measureup or any of those guys. This is a lot of great information for a GREAT price. I bought a couple other Network+ books and nobody comes even close to explaining things as well as Mike Harwood did in this book.

1 out of 5 stars Practice tests are of very low quality.......2004-12-27

I purchaced this 2 book package because I need to brush up for the Network+ test. I thought these books would be good since they came with so many practice questions. The FIRST test I took with the MeasureUP software that comes on the CD of the 2nd book incorrectly marked 2 of my answers wrong. I verified my answers were correct by looking up the answers in the book's answer key. 2/45 questions were incorrectly marked! This is poor quality and thus unacceptable. This was all on the first test! I do not know how many other questions are getting marked incorrectly.

Another side note is the poor quality of the first eBook. There are what I will call "guide marks" marked on every page of the PDF. It appears this is the same copy that went to printing presses.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good material for the new Net+ exam.......2004-07-24

The job market is very tough these days and networking is the key to getting a better job. Network+ is the stepping stone to breaking into the networking arena. Que has released a terrific set of books on the Exam Cram series for the final studying of the Network+ exam.

The big book of the set; has the finer points of the exam covered, with a cram sheets right as you open the book. The book has first-rate coverage of both the OSI model and TCP/IP, key areas in networking.

There is also 2 practice exam in the book as well as cd with the Prep Logic testing engine. If you like the cd you can order the full set from the Prep Logic website. The smaller boo is filled with over 500 questions and a cd with the Measure Up test engine and again you can get the full set on line.

Overall this is a great prep tool and if you had the author's outstanding training guide to the mix you will the complete set is a seriously good shot of passing the exam on the first try.

4 out of 5 stars Nice find and intersting reading........2004-07-24

When I first started reading about ICDL I was completely confused by what the certification really was. If fact the name is misleading, International Computer Driving License and it has nothing to do with driving at all.

What I found was a compacted set of book for the ICDL exam, and when you pass the 7 modules you have completed what could be one of the most comprehensive set of test out there.

Covering Windows and Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint as well as Mail and the internet, you have to be able to perform tasks in the selected subjects. The exam does not cover FrontPage, Publisher or Project and this should be considered in the future.

The books covered over 500 questions and while the smaller book is listed as "Review Exercises" it is really just review questions. Overall I learned a few new tricks along the way as well as a couple of shortcuts

5 out of 5 stars A good overview, complements other study materials.......2005-08-09

This book shouldn't be your only study guide for the test. However, I think it should still be in your study materials as it offers several perspectives that others fail to address. A good study guide combo would be this book, the sybex book, and a form of computer study material (questions). I would stay away from the Cisco Official book as it's not as effective. So for what it is, this was a good book to have (I still reference it for CCIE and used it for my CCNP). Hope this helps!

2 out of 5 stars No confidence !!!.......2005-06-23

I just took the practice exam for 640-821 (chapter 11) after having read the 10 chapters and extensively reviewed "Part 1" of the book, chapters 2 -7 for the first half exam of the CCNA. I found very little correlation between the chapters and the practice exam questions. It seems that many of the questions for the 640-821 practice exam are taken from material covered in chapter 10 which is supposed to be for exam 640-811. I have no confidence in the book and its division of the required material for each exam!

3 out of 5 stars Useful Even If Inconsistant from Each Other.......2006-04-11

I have actually found both of these resources to be useful in tediously combing through about 20% of material that I might have missed on the exam, and with this I have succeeded. These books alone will not help you pass the exam, as you'll need additional material and of course, a real computer running Windows XP. With this understanding and diligent effort, one can pass the exam.

Despite my recommendation, I was a little bothered that the books' organization and topics (chapters) were inconsistent from each other. Thus if you study a chapter from one book, you may or may not find a corresponding chapter in the practice questions books.

To make matters worse, both of the books do not necessarily correspond to the actual Microsoft study material thought in MSCE courses and published through Microsoft Press. One would hope that this material would be supplement study guides from Microsoft. The end result from this is that there is a lot of coverage of material that may or may not be on the exam.

In some areas, they over emphasize tools from Microsoft's download site, that isn't covered on the exam, but then completely miss areas that are covered on the exam. The authors do claim again that you need more than these resources to pass the exam, but I wonder if that is more of an excuse to publish material that doesn't necessarily correspond or is relevant to the actual test questions.

OK. I seem harsh for lost hours of my life, ha-ha, but I did find the books useful, and I did feel they were a help to passing the exam.

When I took the 70-270 exam about a year ago I had and abundance of study material, what I didn't have was a final prep tool to study from. This set of books is an excellent final tool but the timing is a little late.

Both books cover each objectives and domains for the exam; however the areas of AD and group policies were a bit small as compared to the questions I had on my exam. The information is technically accurate and very up to date with the current exam.

There are 2 books in the set and each one has a different set of exam questions, 1 with Prep Logic and the other with Measure UP. Both set of question are right in line with the exam, but I would add more questions to the mix.

There are over 1000 questions in total, with over 500 in the Practice Questions book alone. Again timing is the major drawback and overall this is set of books has excellent explanations for the questions, which makes studying more than memorization.
