Customer Reviews:
A great Introduction To Mastering.......2007-02-06
Having Completed a Sound Engineers course at SAE (value for money debateable), I picked this book up because of the poor teaching in the courses' lessons on Mastering. This book was exceptional with knowledge and some "how to do's" It also lists some of the equipment usedin Mastering. I found it very useful and was able to correct my Lecturers lack of knowledge and thus help the rest of the class. I have passed this book on to most of them and the lecture even wanted to read it. Not currently available in Australia.
Didn't get 5 stars as there is a fair bit of padding out in the pages.
Now my mixes sound so much better and the best reason is that I now know why.
Excellent for beginners. I bought the whole series of three books and have read them all. I never regreted doing it and wish I had of done this earlier. Maybe spending the $10k on a course wasn't the best choice.
Exceptional value for money!!
five stars +1.......2007-01-10
...a great job,i wanna buy all the books of Bobby related to sound.everything is explained so friendly,so...understandable !!!
The Truth.......2005-08-18
The honest truth is that if you want a book telling you how to master and how to apply mastering to your work...THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR YOU. YOU'RE BETTER OFF GETTING THE BOOK BY KATZ!!! For beginners that don't have a clue where to start this book is for you. Throughout the book Bobby O explains the entire mastering from how it's done to the equipment used, how the equipment works and precautionary measures to take before mastering your work. I see why people got pissed off with this book because they wanted to know how to master their project...but instead bobby o. tells you the theory behind mastering for example, how various equipment work, mastering for different media as well as what to buy what the equipment does and the effects they have on the mix. I would recommend this book to anyone that is hesitant about mastering or doesn't have a clue about it. This book will inform you of the process from how it's done to the equipment used and so on...so that in the end you can make your decision on whether or not you want to master your own projects. Awesome book.
Excellent book.......2004-07-08
There is one thing I must say here in defense of this book. Most people who have not dedicated there mind to learning the real craft of mastering may find this book boring. There are no shortcuts. This book explains every single process involved in the so called "black art" of mastering, and in great detail (with the masters). What more could you want? The techniques are there and they are plainly obvious. If you are not familiar with mastering terms and technical jargon then yes, it may be over your head. If you don't understand fundamental pitches and harmonic frequencies, then you may not understand the section on EQ. I could go on but the point is this:
Familiarize yourself with terms before you purchase this book or you will remain lost.
It has helped me tremendously

Customer Reviews:
weak sauce.......2007-06-16
This book is a very lame read. There will be a few paragraphs on a topic that just skim the surface/common sense aspects of the equipment, and then have 12 more paragraphs of different engineers agreeing with what was just said. If you want a real book that will teach you everything you might want to know about mixing and recording, get Total Recording by David Moulton (author of the Golden Ears listening training series). Total recording: The complete guide to audio production
Simple and Informative.......2007-03-09
Great book! Very concise and packed full of interviews with top engineers. Very recommended.
Mixing Engineers Handbook.......2007-02-20
This is probably the most helpful audio book that I own. There are a lot of helpful hints for mixing. It doesn't just go over one mans techniques, it discusses many common techniques used in the industry.
Just for posterity.......2007-02-18
A historical documentation of how it used to be before everything went virtual.
Mixing Engineer's Handbook.......2007-01-11
Pretty much what the title says!!! A piece of standard equipment in any home studio dreaming of delivering some work of industry quality.

Customer Reviews:
Good reference, unbalanced presentation.......2007-01-03
This book is a must-have for anyone serious about audio technology and sound reproduction. Almost all imaginable subjects are covered, making it an excellent reference.
The problem with this book, though, is that it is a collection of articles ("chapters") written by various experts around the world. It appears however that no effort was made by the editor to get spread and depth of content in line. For example, the chapter on transformers is very detailed, with good references at the end, yet the chapter on amplifiers is very weak and gives no references whatsoever.
Also, this book appears to be more written towards the recording community, and covers only a few topics relative to live sound reinforcement. Finally, there is virtually no discussion on sound effects processors.
Simply the Best Book on Audio.......2003-09-21
This is the best book on audio I have seen. It covers a broad range of topics in great depth.
The book goes into great detail about the following areas:
a) human hearing and calculating the acoustic properties of rooms
b) PCB-level electronic components
c) system level components
d) storage media
e) bringing all of the above together into applications
The book assumes the reader has a good foundation in electronics but explains concepts in a very unpretentious way. It's nothing like reading a scholarly journal where you constantly have to look at other articles and review textbooks to understand. If you understand the basics of electronic circuits you will understand this book without consulting other textbooks.
Every audio topic I can think of is explored in this book. If you work on anything related to audio you absolutely should not be without this reference.
The most authorative work I have seen........2003-04-07
I have been playing around with amplifiers and recording equipment for a while now - never had formal education in audio engineering, but I do have some electronic background. This book has helped me a lot in refining my recording techniques, my audio system itself and furthered my understanding of audio systems from microphone placement to cabling, speaker placement, phono cartridge alignment to name but a few. Whatever subject I sought advice on, this book has so far provided me with the answers. I would go as far as saying that whatever this book does not cover is not relevant to audio systems. One word of caution though, this book is not like a "cookbook". You have to have an electronic background in order to make full use of the book - as the title rightly puts it, it is intended for engineers.
Handbook For Sound Engineers.......2002-02-24
You MUST buy this book! Pretend you did not see the price and order this book. It is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have ever run across. It contains more than 1550 pages of information, diagrams, schematics, and just about anything else you could ever think to need. Covers everything from Accoustic Theory to Zener Diodes (I don't know what they are either...I haven't read that far yet!). I am planning to use this as a refresher for myself (that is what my schooling is in) and for training more sound techs at my church.
Note: This is a book for intermediate to advanced level sound engineers. It would be way over a beginners head. There are a number of excellent books for beginners available through Amazon, though.

Customer Reviews:
A Great reference and a good starting point.......2007-03-15
This is a very useful starting point when recording a new instrument for the first time. It gives you in depth details about micing positions with clear pictures to support what the author is writing about.
The author also explains in a brief way the use of everyday studio gear wich along with all the recording techniques reviewed in the other chapters makes this book a must have in any studio, for beginners as a great starting point and for seasoned pros as an alternative and sometimes a challenge to the way they have captured audio and worked in the studio their whole life.
"And what do you do?".......2007-02-17
"Same thing as everyone else you interviewed".
Very little changes between the interviewed "experts" except mic selection and placement. Pretty basic stuff. If you have a great sounding studio, you use it. If you don't, maybe you should find one.
Some very good advice on mic placement.......2007-01-31
This book seems to be written primarily towards recording rock, pop, etc. small groups. There is a lot of advice on mic placement for drumset for instance. For my use - recording saxophone quartet - there wasn't a lot of help. The advice on mic placement in general, however, was definitely worth the price of the book.
Good Companion.......2006-08-08
This one kept me very good company on an overnight flight to Vienna from New York. Riveting stuff, not least because there was a good chance I was going to have to oversee the micing of a full-orchestra and choir on one of the dates! Luckily for all concerned, my nascent skills were not called upon, but I certainly felt a lot more qualified after reading Owsinski's tome. Some of the gear described might be above the head of home/project studio owners, but nonetheless Owsinski's straightforward and eminently readable work offers fascinating insights into the vast art of recorded sound.

Customer Reviews:
4th edition better.......2007-05-18
I quickly scanned the text. The difference between the fifth edition and the fourth edition is that the 5th is missing the CD with the electronic version of the book.
My Video Bible.......2007-02-03
As a EE specializing in hardware development often related to video processing, I consider this my "Video Bible".
A good reference.......2006-06-30
This book serves as a very good reference for video engineers. However, for a person new to the field of video encoding/decoding, I would not recommend this book.
Video Remystified.......2006-06-28
This is supposed to be the Bible on all things video, but
the book falls short in many areas:
- Each successive edition has compressed old material and
added new material to the point where the coverage in
many areas is extremely superficial. Introductory material
has been hacked out.
- Terms are introduced and either not explained at all, or
explained pages later. A good editor should have read this
thing. It reads like it was pasted together.
- If the author broke the book into multiple volumes, the
book would benefit. I'd suggest one for digital standards,
and one for everything else (interface standards, video
basics, etc.). Then increase the total page count to restore
material trimmed out from previous additions.
- There are way too many useless, redundant pictures. Could have
used one picture along with a table to each resolution.
A good book for video electronics engineers.......2006-06-03
To begin with, the 4th edition of this book was released in autumn 2004, so all reviews earlier than that are referring to previous editions. I think that too many people buy this book and are expecting either "Video Algorithms Demystified" or "Video Processing Demystified". That is entirely understandable since "Video Demystified" could be talking about one or several areas of video and until you purchase the book you don't really know which one. This book should probably be relabeled as "Video Systems Demystified" to cause a minimum of confusion.
This book is most suitable for electrical engineers that are interested in video signals and their diagrams, video interfaces, connectors and their pin-outs, voltage levels, and digital data and video formats. There are many diagrams showing, for example, typical scrambler and descrambler circuits. The chapters on the video standards (MPEG-1,2,4) do a pretty good job of detailing the format of the video data as it is encoded, including all of the possible header fields, but there is virtually no discussion on any of the compression and motion estimation algorithms that do the actual encoding. There is one chapter on video signal processing, and it is very superficial.
The CD-ROM contains a large variety of color test images useful to video engineers trying to determine if their video system has any problems, and if so, produce a diagnosis. The one item in this book of particular interest to people with more of a computer science/algorithm interest in video would be the source code for MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.261, and H.263 video encoders and decoders present on the CD. However, I have not tried out these decoders myself, so I cannot speak to their functionality.
In summary, if you are an electrical/electronics engineer involved in video electronics I highly recommend this book. If you are a programmer or someone interested in the algorithms of video processing, this book will probably be only moderately (3 stars) helpful. Thus, I split the difference for a 4 star rating. I notice that Amazon only shows the content for the 3rd edition, so I show the table of contents for the 4th edition next:

Customer Reviews:
amazing insight into the buisness. Covers all the Bases!!!!.......2007-09-25
This book is very well writetn and expresses things other books don't attempt to touch. This book give a great deal of insight into what a producer, engineer and writer does, and how to do it, but it goes above and beyond acting as a guide for how to do these professionally. It dives deep enough into the technical aspect of recording to give you a good idea of the information you would need as a producer or engineer. On the other side, it talks alot of about the buisness of recording and writing. This is what sets the book apart from many others in the category. On top of the information is a great personal tone that Michael puts into the book, you feel the sense that he is in the room telling you these things from his personal experience, which makes all the information easier to capture. i highly recommend this book.
An awesome book at an awesome price!.......2007-03-30
What sets this book apart form other production or business books is that every topic contains not only a list of important steps but the authors personal approach to the topic. This, in effect, gives the reader the big picture behind the elements, allowing him or her to adapt the specifics of this book to almost any situation.
very useful!!!.......2007-02-15
This book was such a wonderful resource for me! I have been thinking about wanting to get into writing music for commercials, but really didn't know what it all entailed. This book had so many answers for me as well as ideas that will be helpful to me! This is such a great book for anyone who wants to get into this business!

Excellent Insight.......2005-07-05
Sarah Jones has definitely provided great insight into the "recording industry". With this book you are able to get a bird's eye view of the "real" industry. She explains in great detail of the work required to succeed in this very fickle business. If you are looking for the recording industry to be de-mystified, this book is for you. Hats off to this lady, she knows what she is talking about!
