Book Description

After Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996, she educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition — by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors and listening to her own body. In 2001, she marshaled everything she had learned as a “patient-expert” into the first edition of this book, which she has now completely updated and revised. The First Year®—Type 2 Diabetes uniquely guides you step-by-step through your first year with diabetes, walking you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of the crucial first year.
In clear, concise, accessible language, Becker covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with your diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including:
• Choosing the diet that is best for you
• The role of exercise
• Daily blood-glucose testing routines and understanding lab tests
• Medications and supplements
• Networking with others
• Insurance issues
• Traveling and socializing

5 out of 5 stars At last some one who really talks to me.......2007-09-27

I have had type 2 diabetes since 1988. I have had several doctors and diabetes experts. I have been to Diabetic Educators and clinics. I did not feel bad and had never known a person in the family with diabetes so I just did as the doctor said and took my pill every day and saw my condition get worse over the years. Little did I know that the doctor was expecting that. I had no idea that there were things that I could do to prevent complications.

This book explains the things that the doctors do not have time to explain. This covers the things that the Educators - who are mostly not diabetics - forget to tell you. The big difference is that Gretchen has diabetes and is using her considerable skill to teach the reader what she and many others are doing to delay the damage that high blood sugars do to your body.

Get it; read it daily. When you wear it out, buy another. It is the best thing you can do for yourself. You are in a war and you just don't know it. Sign up for her blog and David Mendosa's web site.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Place for Type 2 Folks.......2007-08-28

Many of the reviews written here diss this book for not covering this or that, especially the emotional rollercoaster that can attend this or any other lifestyle changing condition. The "negatives" can also be interpretted as "matter-of-fact". She does not talk about how to get rid of the condition, but neither does she bring false hope that all of us who are type 2 diabetics can somehow be cured. It's true that some can control the condition with diet and that some who lose enough weight and are careful can reverse the diagnosis. It's not the norm, however. Most will live with diabetes and all of its possibilities, some controlling their levels with diet and pills, some with diet and insulin injections. Some will never be able to control it; some will not be willing to try. The author is not trying to bring doom and gloom or to touch every single variation on the theme. It is a refreshing dose of reality in fairly concise language.

The two most important statements in the book are that I am in charge of my health care and that if I am a smoker, one of the simplest and best ways to help my treatment is to stop smoking. Taking charge of my health care made a monumental change in the level of attention that I received from my physicians and the quality of information that I received. I was suddenly treated with much more respect, and as more of a participant rather than a mere receiver of instructions to be blindly followed. My appointments changed from 8 minute data sessions to 30-45 minute discussions of how things worked and what could be tweaked to make things work better. Very important change in relationship with my main doc; it was good before, but now is great!

Also remember that this is an INTRODUCTION to this condition, not the be-all and end-all of information. It helps the reader to formulate good questions to bring to their physicians and other members of their health-care team--questions that might otherwise go unasked and thus unanswered. Most of us are not well enough informed about this or any other subject when we first start learning about it.

I've purchased three of these and given two of them away to newly diagnosed folks who have thanked me profusely for the great info that they've received and the hope that this book brings. It is a reality check that shares both benefits from good self-care and dangers from ignorance and neglect with this thing called type 2 diabetes. Lots of folks saw the horror stories, some folks saw the offer of light at the end of the tunnel. Look for the light. It's in there!

5 out of 5 stars It's a great help.......2007-08-23

This book was so helpful in filling in all the gaps (there were many) in my doctor's explanations/instructions for me, a newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic. The author offers a straightforward primer on diabetes - what is it? This includes good technical explanations of the disease. How does it work? It discusses the possible effects of diabetes poorly controlled. What can you do to live with it? It discusses the benefits of weight loss, diets and exercise, not by just saying its good for you; but giving a technical explanation why these activities actually modify the way your body responds in the face of diabetes. I was very satisfied with this book and am so happy that when I went onto Amazon to look for Bernstein's book (recommended by my doctor), Amazon recommended Dr. Becker's book in addition. So far, it has been the best resource to help me cope with this new disease.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for newly diagnosed diabetics.......2007-08-22

Back when I first heard the word diabetes spoken to me by a doctor, indicating that it was a condition I was suffering, I remember picking up "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed" and devouring it in a matter of a couple of days.

Today, it's been 5 years since I was diagnosed. I have type 1 diabetes (not type 2) and I am a pump user since 2005 as well, but the teachings and references on how to deal with diabetes at large still hold true and are just as valuable.

I recommend this book to anyone who has recently been diagnosed with diabetes as a must-have reference to get through the early stages of this condition.

2 out of 5 stars Depressing.......2007-08-04

I am recently diagnosed with Type 2 and this was the 10th book I read on the subject...and the only one that was depressing in tone. The author herself admits in her forward that she has issues with food and it shows - she talks a lot about never eating her favorite things again, which is not the case as long as it's done in moderation. I was handling things well until I read this book, then hit a downward spiral for 3 weeks afterward. The info in this book is presented in other books like Diabetes for Dummies and Everything You Need to Know About Type 2 Diabetes without the bummer!

4 out of 5 stars Good quality book.......2007-09-23

This book was an excellent look at myself. After I had taken the MBTI this book gave me insight that I otherwise wouldn't have had. It was funny to read quotes made by others who share my typology and saying... oh yeah I've said that. Well written, easy to read. A good resource for anyone looking to expand on their knowledge of the MBTI especially in work relationships.

Get ready for insight into the world of people around you.
This book is a start into seeing why people act the way they do. Be careful not to label... just use it as a tool and you will find great reward in this plie of information.
Why is it that your employee, boss, co-worker acts the way they do? Pick up this book. Get informed.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to Manage People.......2007-01-05

This book is a fabulous book for managers. I am the regional for several stores, and the biggest complaints from employees are of people not getting along. In assessing the complaints with the help of this book, I realized it was due to miscommunication, and perceiving a person of a differnt "Type" wrong. This book explaines each type and some common tendencies of each. It also has strategies and solutions for developing the opposite style you have to be able to communicate with all types of people. For example, if you tend to be an "F" or Feeler (using emotions to make decisions), there are pages of strategies to help develope the opposite side (the "T", or Thinker) without compromising your own personality. I have used this book in mediation and arguments with fabulous results, just by having the employees read the other person's type and knowing where they are coming from.

4 out of 5 stars Can't we all just get along!.......2005-08-19

This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc.

Any manager that has direct reports would do themselves a favor by reading this book. This book will also provide support for a subordinate that doesn't quite "fit in." For those hurried types, each chapter ends with guidlines in a charted format for working with those of other preferences. Although this is somewhat useful, what I don't like about the approach is that they focus on the four preferences instead of focusing on the four major groupings, forcing the reader to combine and study the effects. For example, the charts will explain how an E should lead an I, etc. I believe that it would be much more useful to categorize the charts by the four major groups (e.g. NF's, NT's, SJ's, SP's) and how to interact with other types in each subject area.

To the author's credit, the book does provide an overview on the major strengths and potential weaknesses of each of the 16 types in the workplace, for those who aren't familiar with the MBTI. However, it does not really provide a concrete method of determining type, leaving the reader somewhat guessing with the use of anecdotal phrases.

Overall, I find this book well worth the investment. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to typewatching. If you are familiar with type, the specific chapters will be meaningful, if not, pick up either the precursor to this book by the same author's or one of David Keirsey's works prior to reading this.

4 out of 5 stars Better tool for self understanding than controlling others.......2005-05-26

Kroeger and Thuesen are not my favorite MBTI authors, but the Type Talk books are a decent reference for those who consider themselves beginner and intermediate level in the personality theory world. The explanations of the four preferences and how to look for them in one's own self or in others is reasonably well done. I particularly liked how they borrowed from Keirsey's theory and delineated the NT/NF/SP/SJ categories. They do not delve far into the dominant/auxilary/tertiary/inferior functions.

Type Talk at Work explains how people of different types set goals, manage time, hire and fire, resolve conflict, solve problems, and deal with other workplace issues. The range of topics was pretty comprehensive, although by necessity a bit superficial. Given the length of the book the explanation of how different types interact was well done, and had some case studies also. I was not very impressed with the 'Z Problem Solving Model', but it may benefit someone else. The best part of the book is the last part, entitled 'The Sixteen Profiles At Work'. The Sixteen Profiles section details how all of the types tend to think and behave in a workplace setting. I'm sure many people will be amazed at how accurate it can be for them. Type Talk at Work is defintely meant to promote self knowledge, which the authors stress is the first duty of the reader: know yourself well, then try to figure other people out.

I have two criticisms: firstly, the authors are NFs, and in my view did not altogether avoid unconsciously writing the book for other NFs. That is a minor criticism, as the book overall is well done. I also believe that Kroeger and Thuesen did not warn readers to properly use type theory, in other words use it in a very careful, ethical way. The book is very dangerous in the wrong hands and misuse of knowledge and information about someone can and does happen in the business world. The reader needs to know that sharing this type of information can be very risky.

I don't mind recommending the book, particularly because a type book regarding the workplace is badly needed and I'm not aware of any others. econ

5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down........2004-03-23

This book is an amazing introduction to Typology. I started reading it and could not put it down. There is so much useful information in this book that can only help you when you have dealings with others. It can also help you learn a great deal about yourself. The authors pointed out that was the main purpose of this book.

For example is was able to determine that I am a INFP. I also learned that it's very uncommon to be an INFP, being a male. I was also able to learn what types of work envoirnments I work well in, what types of careers people with my type are attracted too, what other types I correspond with best, and much more. Also finding out that all of my poor Introverted people were persecuted for being so quiet, and often recieved constant day-to-day pressure to get out and be normal (so I'm not alone). Not realizing that this behavior could not be more normal.

This book is a very easy and enjoyable read. Everything is well organized and laid out. The authors use alot of conversation examples between different personality types, often a riot to read, it also makes a point about different types of people, which really helped me the most. This book has so much to offer, everybody can benefit greatly from it.

5 out of 5 stars Knowing Your Type.......2004-03-11

Have you ever walked into a co-workers office and asked them a question as they first look at you with a glazed look, and then ask you to repeat the question? Have you dealt with a people who take forever to answer anything? How about trying to understand individuals who seem to be somewhat unfocused and a bit scattered in their conversation?

The book Type Talk is a great introduction to understanding the personality make up of these types of people and basically everyone else.

This book breaks down the 16 Myers Briggs Types to come up with an introduction to individuals who want to know why people do the things they do.

For individuals who know types through the MBTI, this book will assist you in understanding the type of almost anyone you talk with, and be able to relate better with them. For someone who has not been through the MBTI, this book will allow you to be introduced to personality types without animal names, colors or something that sounds like a sickness (phlegmatic....ahem....)

You will come to understand and reflect on how someone who tends to be more Introverted or Extroverted, Sensing or iNtuitive, Thinking or Feeling, Judging or Perceiving and how a combination of the above will determine how people tend to relate to the people in their lives, how they approach life in general and daily.

This book could help everyone to understand the world we live in.

One thing though, don't put people in a box. If someone is considered one of the 16 types, that is not a box they are in, that is the reference they usually feel most comfortbably working from.

Thuesen and Kroeger bring together their years of research and have a lot of documentation for back up and instruction.

A must book if you are in Human Resources, Training or Education or if you love the differences that make up the human race.

4 out of 5 stars Now if only schools used this stuff..........2004-01-20

The descriptions of the types are great. This is very well written and most informative. I recommend it most definitely and wish the inefficient, one-size-fits-all obsolete psych of the education system could get thrown out in favor of this more practical psych system.
The only place the Otto and Janet missed the boat completely is where they try and guess famous people's types: they are nearly always off base, strangely.

5 out of 5 stars Top-Shelf.......2003-03-13

I work in the field of Leadership Development and the two assessment tests we use are the MBTI and the Gallup StrengthsFinder. The MBTI is great for learning preferences and type, and how someone will act in public. This book, 'Type Talk," does an excellent job of working through all the types and preferences, whether Extrovert/Introvert Intuitive/Sensing Thinking/Feeling or Judging/Perceiving, this book does it all. It makes sense, it is easy to read, and will get you on the road to understanding the world of Myers-Briggs a whole lot better. Overall Grade, A.

5 out of 5 stars The Best MBTI Book Out.......2003-02-13

After over 10 years of studying and using the MBTI in corporate and not for profit work, I have found Otto and Janet's books most useful. Their writing is non-judgemental and very acurate. There are many useful "job aids" throughout that give excellent tips in areas like communication, conflict, etc... They explain type through stories and experiences that illustrate meaning behind the model. I have not found better authors on the subject of MBTI.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Overly basic and poorly organized.......2007-07-15

I am a relative newbie to the study of typography, but still this book is far too basic. I learned a single fact which I had always been curious about - that the letterforms of smaller-point type are different from (not just smaller than) larger-point type in the same face - and that is a pretty elemental thing that most people interested in type are already aware of.
More suprisingly, there are some serious issues with the layout and typography of this book. Some sidebars, which are in small type, are set in yellow. Small yellow print on white paper? Surely a legibility no-no. Also, each page serves as its own mini-essay (and I do mean MINI; on most spreads, only the right-hand page has any text, and even then sometimes only half a page) but lacks a headline, so the reader has no idea what the page is about.
The only useful element in this book is the various type examples, which could easily be found elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Typography.......2007-06-13

I read this book for my first typography class at design school. It does a good job of giving the reader a feeling for different styles and personalities of letterforms. It is also written in a fun style that makes the book entertaining and easy to read for those just entering the design field.

4 out of 5 stars Good type initiation book.......2007-01-02

The first time I saw this book it was in a fellow designer's bookshelf and I thought the title was humorous and very well targeted. Anybody who knows type understand the joke in "anyone who letterspaces blackletter type would steal sheep" and if you haven't heard of the quote nor get the joke then you are probably a type beginner who could use this book.

I don't agree with other reviews stating that the book is too basic and so it serves no purpose. Yes, it is basic, but 170+ pages of good basic introductory material. I would recommend it for student graphic designers, artists and multimedia designers who work with type but are not necessarily drawn to it. This book gives you the basics with a lot of examples and a humoristic approach that should keep you entertained long enough for you to grasp the ideas.

This is not a reference and it doesn't talk about advanced matters, but it will provide a tremendous wealth of knowledge to anybody new to type specifics. Sure one could get the basics from a 7-page pamphlet, but design is about making sense of the ideas and I can't imagine a beginner understanding all these concepts without the help of an array of examples such as the ones contained in this small book.

1 out of 5 stars worthless...........2006-08-02

This is without a doubt the worst reference on typography that I have ever read. It is filled with useless metaphors and examples. I really expected more from the Adobe Press.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Quick Truths.......2006-01-24

1. Entertainment, not resource. Provides insight into the uses of type, as well as a brief history of many different typefaces. Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typography" (0881792063) is a better book for those in need of a resource.

2. Aimed at a less experienced audience. Discusses type in relation to emotions, legibility, etc, though not in great depth. It does a great job of showing a beginner how important type is, showing a large number of examples of typefaces, and, possibly, inspiring them to look into the subject more thoroughly.

3. The quote used in the title did not come from the authors, it came from F. Goudy in 1936. Also, most of the fonts mentioned in the book cannot be found in Adobe's font library, some are over 100 years old. The book is not trying to sell you anything.

4. The book itself is a great example of what can be accomplished with type. It also contains many instances of type being used to great effect, while explaining how and why it works so well.

5. As someone interested in type, you could do much worse than this book. However, its simple nature, though complete and well-constructed, whets the appetite more than actually satisfying it.

Book Description

Until now, most health professionals have considered diabetes a one-way street. Once you developed it, you were stuck with it--and you could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems.

Enter Dr. Neal Barnard, who through a series of groundbreaking studies, the latest funded by the National Institute for Health, has shown it doesn't have to be that way. By following the diet outlined in this book, readers can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the American Diabetes Association's diet and beyond that improve their bodies' ability to respond to insulin--in effect reversing the defining symptom of the disease. And there's more. Study participants lost weight, were able to cut back on and sometimes even discontinue medications, and left behind tedious exchange plans for delicious foods in generous portions.

It's a new way to treat diabetes.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I am amazed! .......2007-10-03

Having a 13 and 15 year-old child both diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of four, I continue to be amazed with the lack of knowledge that most physicians express about Type 1 diabetes. It is obvious to me that Dr. Barnard is just another Doc on an ego high to make money by publishing. To title a book "Program for Reversing Diabetes" is once again irresponsible and erroneous by not stating on the cover that this ONLY applies to Type 2 diabetes and only a small percentage of Type 2 at best. Unfortunately, there is NO reversing of Type 1 diabetes. It is true that one can improve there glucose levels by using an insuling pump, exercising, and eating a healthy diet. But reversing Type 1 diabetes is not yet an option. After being an active diabetes advocate for over 10 years with several trips to D.C. and lectures from Doctors from the National Institute of Health, I have learned that the facts show that the treatment for Type 1 diabetes is very $$ lucrative and finding a cure is not worth the risk for private industry. The cure for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes must come from Government funding (after the War). In the meanwhile, we will continue to have Doctors to profit from misleading information.

3 out of 5 stars Lost Weight But Blood Sugars Remained High..........2007-08-03

I stuck to this diet as posed in the book for 4 months. I did lose weight, in fact I did lose about 30 pounds and then after about 3 months no more weight loss.

The problem with me is that yes my fasting blood sugar average did go down (from 270 to about 240) but that after each meal of allowed foods it would go sky high well over 300. I cheated twice on the diet, one night I had my mom's fried chicken and mashed potatoes and green beans...the other night I got a hamburger and french fries. But those were the only 2 times I cheated on this diet. Other diets I would cheat all the time, so you do feel more satisfied on this diet. Pizza without cheese and just vegies is actually pretty good! Mostly I had frozen steamed vegies, beans and a little rice for my meals, with breakfast being shredded mini wheat (I cannot stand oatmeal and that is advocated for breakfast in this diet) and blueberries and soymilk. I did lose the weight but my blood sugar drop was unsatisfactory.

Last week I went and got Dr Bernsteins Diabetes Solution book. In about 8 days, I lost another 4 pounds and my blood sugar this morning was 140. Its dropped over a hundred points in one week. It may be another alternative for other diabetics.

This diet may work well with others, I gave it a good shot and I did lose weight but I have had better results on Dr Bernstein's diet and treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Throw the Baby Out with the Bath Water.......2007-06-03

The title of this review will I hope keep the public interested in this book. It is in part a response to the Northern CA writer who warns you to note Dr. Barnard's background with PETA. He may or may not have an agenda within his book, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water. What he did for me was confirm something I uttered over twenty years ago, when I was first struggling with my new diagnosis. I found that I had more trouble with my blood sugars when I ate at the Chinese restaurant than I did when I ate sweets. I assumed it was the fat content of my favorite foods. His information regarding cells and keyholes is right on. I have been on his program for three weeks and am excited to feel so great again. I was taught by my first diabetes doctor that type II diabetes is hereditary and will show eventually if you live long enough, if you have inherited it. Age, hormones, and weight are the factors that make for high sugars. He doesn't talk about the age factor and that does leave me with more questions. We all need to understand ourselves and take part in our own care.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes.......2007-05-12

Great Program with scientific evidence that will help most all diabetics. Have been on this program for 5 weeks. Within the first week my blood glucose levels dropped 15-20 points. In the last four weeks I have maintained within 80-110 on my morning checks. Have used many of the recipes and amazingly am not hungry at all. I have eliminated the nightly dosage of Metformin. My goal is to eliminate all medications. The American Diabetes Association should rethink their diet plans.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A visually stunning monograph.......2000-05-25

Despite its modest format, this elegant monograph more than does justice to Vincent James' extraordinary copper pavilions floating in a birch forest, comprehensively illustrated here with a wide range of visual materials, from early design sketches, construction photographs, and extensive working drawings to exquisite images of the finished building through four seasons of rain, mist, snow, and sun. Fold-out plans are provided in the inside cover, with a location key to all photos for readers' convenience. The graphic design of the book is clearly a labor of love, far beyond the often perfunctory standard of architectural publishing. Professional readers will regret the absence of scale information, but this is a minor lapse amidst the books many virtues.

Book Description

Gearing up for all types of trout fishing on creeks, rivers, tailwaters, and lakes

Casting, selecting a fly, and reading the water and finding trout

Dave Hughes's clear and simple instruction and explanation describes 18 trout rigs and 81 methods to fish them. In moving water: rigs and methods for dry flies and emergers, nymphs, wet flies, streamers, and dry flies and droppers. In stillwater: dry flies and sunk flies.Fly fishers learn the specifics of the rig--types of fly line, lengths and tapers of leader and tippet, the flies, and split shot, putty weight, strike indicators, droppers, point flies, and indicators--and the full array of methods to present the rig to the trout. Hughes's lucid text is teamed with hundreds of instructive illustrations, including those showing how the trout views the fly. The more rigs you learn to construct and the more methods you learn to apply, the more situations you'll solve, and the more trout you'll catch.

4 out of 5 stars What else do you need?.......2007-09-28

This book is extremely useful for any experienve level of angler. It covers basically all of the, well, rigs and methods you will ever need to use. I personally found this book very, very useful. I have also read two other Dave Hughes' books and they are of equal caliber. I did give this book a four star rating simply because I don't beleive anything deserves a perfect rating; but it was darn close. Anyone who is getting started in fly-fishing or even the experienced angler will get alot out of this book.

5 out of 5 stars clinebell's pastorial counseling & care.......2000-05-06

A great text for students, pastors and other practising counselors. It contains goals every counselor should strive to achieve. Clinebell also describes the positive characteristics a counselor should portray . The methods and types of counseling are also spelt out in this book. This book is an invaluable guide for me, one which can be adapted to some of the situations in my country.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good resource, but not geared for parents.......2007-08-29

This does say "For teachers, by teachers" on the cover so it isn't surprising most of the ideas are more suited for classroom settings. If you like to have a lot of resources as a parent, it's nice. For a teacher, it would be more useful.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Start.......2007-07-01

I am a preschool teacher who has taught kindergarten and 4 yr olds. Having been asked to take a new job with 2 and 3 yr olds was a lot more difficult than I thought! With all the choking hazzards and lack of fine motor skills, it's hard to plan lessons. This book gives some excellent activity ideas. I loved it. My only negative thought is that the book doesn't really follow "themes", which almost all schools use these days. Still it's a great buy!

4 out of 5 stars Useful Book.......2007-05-18

I bought this book to help my 15-month-old have fun on days it was too rainy or cold to go outside. He gets so bored and fussy when he can't go outside. It is most helpful for my Nanny, who doesn't have a car to take him to an indoor play space. There are a lot of useful suggestions and I like the way the book is organized

5 out of 5 stars A superb resource especially for teachers, daycare providers, and babysitters........2006-11-05

Edited by Kathy Charner, Maureen Murphy, and Charlie Clark, The Encyclopedia of Infant and Toddler Activities: For Children Birth to 3 is a compilation of activities written by teachers, for teachers, yet also useful as a tool for parents looking to spend quality educational time with their young children. Activities range from fine and gross motor practice, to fingerplays and rhymes, to fun with science, language and literacy enhancement, social-emotional training, and much more. Some activities require inexpensive materials; each lists the age group (Infants, younger toddlers, infants and toddlers, or older toddlers) appropriate for the activity, followed by straightforward step-by-step instructions. A superb resource especially for teachers, daycare providers, and babysitters. A sample activity is Eye Follow-Ups for infants; the materials are any bright-colored objects, and the steps are "1. Place a brightly colored object, such as a yellow block, in front of an infant's eyes. 2. Slowly move it to the left, then to the right, to let the infant's eyes follow it. Do it for only a few seconds."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Insomnia Answer.......finally one that works.......2006-03-06

I have had insomnia for the past twelve years trying every med for insomnia on the market. After reading The Insomnia Answer I was motivated to try sleep restriction therapy and it works and I sleep better than I have in many years and don't wake-up drowsy or feel at all drug-dependent. A brilliant and very useful book for anyone suffering from sleep deprivation.

5 out of 5 stars catching the wave works.......2006-01-22

These authors have found the right metaphor for me. Suffering from occasional bouts of sleeplessness after a stressful day at work, I have found that rereading the last chapter before bed, or in the middle of the night, eases me into a relaxed rhythmic state where I trust I'll slip into sleep--if not this wave, the next.

5 out of 5 stars Breakthrough in Sleep Books!.......2006-01-18

Having read many many many of the sleep books, this one is completely different for 2 reasons. First it is remarkably well written. Helps you actually understand what sleep is and how it works for you in an easy to read style. Second, the sleep restriction therapy actually works. Not a bunch of babble, but a straightforward approach that forces you back to good sleep. I must say its not much fun, but if you do suffer from insomnia and want to get a life, this is the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Health Professionals and Persons suffering from Insomnia.......2006-01-04

This new book addresses the growing Insomnia epidemic facing Western cultures. Our 24/7 society encourages less sleep and more work, for all ages. The Insomnia Answer is well written and creatively addresses the many variations of sleeplessness. The authors offer detailed behavioral treatment techniques that can be used effectively, step by step.
Health professionals will no doubt rely on this book for helping their patients and will prescribe the: Insomnia Answer as the first line treatment, rather than immediately writing a prescription for medication.
